The local structure of four amorphous organotin sulfide compounds is investigated by X‐ray absorption spectroscopy. These compounds exhibit a nonlinear optical (NLO) response upon irradiation with a continuous‐wave near‐infrared laser. Their basic structural motif is a hetero‐adamantane cluster with different organic substituent, but depending on the morphology of the compound and the choice of the organic substituent, the nature of the NLO response changes to either a second harmonic generation or the generation of a supercontinuum, potentially appearing as white light. The structural results provide an experimental evidence that the nature of the NLO properties is tied to distortions occurring at the cluster core, with almost ideal clusters in compounds that show second harmonic generation, and strongly distorted clusters in the case of compounds that generate a supercontinuum. These distortions may enable a closer proximity of the cluster cores, altering the intermolecular order, and thereby influencing the NLO response. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The local structure of four amorphous organotin sulfide compounds exhibiting nonlinear optical (NLO) properties is investigated by low‐energy X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES and EXAFS). The basic structural motif of a heteroadamantane cluster with different organic substituents is confirmed by the experiments and by comparison with computer simulations of the near‐edge structure. Essential information is obtained on a special role of the nonaromatic but electron‐rich cyclopentadienyl substituents, which are able to affect the structure of the heteroadamantane cluster core. The EXAFS fits also indicate a structural distinction between two groups within these compounds, which exhibit fundamentally different NLO responses: compounds that show a second harmonic generation can be described well using the single‐molecule approach, whereas the compounds exhibiting the generation of a supercontinuum manifest additional structural contributions. Objective: Suicide is a leading cause of death among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Friends, family and frontline workers (for example, teachers, youth workers) are often best positioned to provide initial assistance if someone is at risk of suicide. We developed culturally appropriate expert consensus guidelines on how to provide mental health first aid to Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviour and used this as the basis for a 5-hour suicide gatekeeper training course called Talking About Suicide. This paper describes the outcomes for participants in an uncontrolled trial of this training course. Methods: We undertook an uncontrolled trial of the Talking About Suicide course, delivered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid instructors to 192 adult (i.e. 18 years of age or older) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (n = 110) and non-Indigenous (n = 82) participants. Questionnaires capturing self-report outcomes were self-administered immediately before (n = 192) and after attending the training course (n = 188), and at four-months follow-up (n = 98). Outcome measures were beliefs about suicide, stigmatising attitudes, confidence in ability to assist, and intended and actual actions to assist a suicidal person. Results: Despite a high level of suicide literacy among participants at pre-course measurement, improvements at post-course were observed in beliefs about suicide, stigmatising attitudes, confidence in ability to assist and intended assisting actions. While attrition at follow-up decreased statistical power, some improvements in beliefs about suicide, stigmatising attitudes and intended assisting actions remained statistically significant at follow-up. Importantly, actual assisting actions taken showed dramatic improvements between pre-course and follow-up. Participants reported feeling more confident to assist a suicidal person after the course and this was maintained at follow-up. The course was judged to be culturally appropriate by those participants who identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders. Implications: The results of this uncontrolled trial were encouraging, suggesting that the Talking About Suicide course was able to improve participants' knowledge, attitudes, and intended assisting actions as well as actual actions taken. The distinct electronic properties, including p-type semiconducting and a wide optical band gap, renders SnO suitable for applications such as microelectronic devices, gas sensors and electrodes. However, the synthesis of SnO is rather challenging due to the instability of the oxide, which is usually obtained as a by-product of SnO2 fabrication. In this work, we developed a bioinspired synthesis, based on a hydrothermal approach, for the direct production of SnO nanoparticles. The amount of mineralizer, inducing the precipitation, was identified, which supports a template-free formation of the nanosized SnO particles at low temperature and mild chemical conditions. Moreover, the SnO nanoparticles exhibit a shape of unique three-dimensional crosses similar to the calcite crosses present in the calcareous sponges. We demonstrated that SnO crosses are evenly distributed and embedded in an organic scaffold by an ice-templating approach, in this way closely mimicking the structure of calcareous sponges. Such scaffolds, reinforced by an active material, here SnO, could be used as filters, sensors or electrodes, where a high surface area and good accessibility are essential. The size and morphology of metal oxide particles have a large impact on the physicochemical properties of these materials, e.g., the aspect ratio of particles affects their catalytic activity. Bioinspired synthesis routes give the opportunity to control precisely the structure and aspect ratio of the metal oxide particles by bioorganic molecules, such as peptides. This study focusses on the identification of tin(II) oxide (tin monoxide, SnO) binding peptides, and their effect on the synthesis of crystalline SnO microstructures. The phage display technique was used to identify the 7-mer peptide SnBP01 (LPPWKLK), which shows a high binding affinity towards crystalline SnO. It was found that the derivatives of the SnBP01 peptide, varying in peptide length and thus in their interaction, significantly affect the aspect ratio and the size dimension of mineralized SnO particles, resulting in flower-like morphology. Furthermore, the important role of the N-terminal leucine residue in the peptide for the strong organic–inorganic interaction was revealed by FTIR investigations. This bioinspired approach shows a facile procedure for the detailed investigation of peptide-to-metal oxide interactions, as well as an easy method for the controlled synthesis of tin(II) oxide particles with different morphologies.
