Transition metal borides are known due to their attractive mechanical, electronic, refractive, and other properties. A new class of rhenium borides was identified by synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments in laser-heated diamond anvil cells between 26 and 75 GPa. Recoverable to ambient conditions, compounds rhenium triboride (ReB3) and rhenium tetraboride (ReB4) consist of close-packed single layers of rhenium atoms alternating with boron networks built from puckered hexagonal layers, which link short bonded (similar to 1.7 angstrom) axially oriented B-2 dumbbells. The short and incompressible Re-B and B-B bonds oriented along the hexagonal c-axis contribute to low axial compressibility comparable with the linear compressibility of diamond. Sub-millimeter samples of ReB3 and ReB4 were synthesized in a large-volume press at pressures as low as 33 GPa and used for material characterization. Crystals of both compounds are metallic and hard (Vickers hardness, H-V = 34(3) GPa). Geometrical, crystal-chemical, and theoretical analysis considerations suggest that potential ReBx compounds with x > 4 can be based on the same principle of structural organization as in ReB3 and ReB4 and possess similar mechanical and electronic properties. We have studied the high-pressure vibrational and structural behavior of bulk graphite and graphene nanoplatelets at room temperature by means of high-pressure Raman spectroscopic and x-ray diffraction probes. We have detected a clear pressure-induced structural transition in both materials, evidenced by the appearance of new Bragg peaks and Raman features, deviating from the starting hexagonal graphitic structure. The high-pressure phase is identified as a partially disordered orthorhombic structure, consisting of mixed sp2- and sp3-type bonding. Our experimental findings serve as direct evidence for the existence of a metastable transient modification in cold compressed carbon, lying between the sp2-type graphite and sp3-type diamond allotropes.

Carbon concentration greatly influences structural and electronic properties of carbonaceous sulfur hydride, almost halving the pressure required for high-TC superconductivity.

Despite several theoretically proposed two-dimensional (2D) diamond structures, experimental efforts to obtain such structures are in initial stage. Recent high-pressure experiments provided significant advancements in the field, however, expected properties of a 2D-like diamond such as sp3 content, transparency and hardness, have not been observed together in a compressed graphene system. Here, we compress few-layer graphene samples on SiO2/Si substrate in water and provide experimental evidence for the formation of a quenchable hard, transparent, sp3-containing 2D phase. Our Raman spectroscopy data indicates phase transition and a surprisingly similar critical pressure for two-, five-layer graphene and graphite in the 4–6 GPa range, as evidenced by changes in several Raman features, combined with a lack of evidence of significant pressure gradients or local non-hydrostatic stress components of the pressure medium up to ≈ 8 GPa. The new phase is transparent and hard, as evidenced from indentation marks on the SiO2 substrate, a material considerably harder than graphene systems. Furthermore, we report the lowest critical pressure ( ≈ 4 GPa) in graphite, which we attribute to the role of water in facilitating the phase transition. Theoretical calculations and experimental data indicate a novel, surface-to-bulk phase transition mechanism that gives hint of diamondene formation.

Ice amorphization, low- to high-density amorphous (LDA-HDA) transition, as well as (re)crystallization in ice, under compression have been studied extensively due to their fundamental importance in materials science and polyamorphism. However, the nature of the multiple-step "reverse" transformation from metastable high-pressure ice to the stable crystalline form under reduced pressure is not well understood. Here, we characterize the rate and temperature dependence of the structural evolution from ice VII to ice I recovered at low pressure (∼5 mTorr) using in situ time-resolved X-ray diffraction. Unlike previously reported ice VII (or ice VIII)→LDA→ice I transitions, we reveal three temperature-dependent successive transformations: conversion of ice VII into HDA, followed by HDA-to-LDA transition, and then crystallization of LDA into ice I. Significantly, the temperature-dependent characteristic times indicate distinctive thermal activation mechanisms above and below 110-115 K for both ice VIII-to-HDA and HDA-to-LDA transitions. Large-scale molecular-dynamics calculations show that the structural evolution from HDA to LDA is continuous and involves substantial movements of the water molecules at the nanoscale. The results provide a perspective on the interrelationship of polyamorphism and unravel its underpinning complexities in shaping ice-transition kinetic pathways.

The Na–P and Li–P chemical systems were studied under pressure using synchrotron X-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell up to 20 GPa, combined with the AIRSS ab initio random structure searching technique. The results reveal an enhanced reactivity of both alkali metals with phosphorous at slightly elevated pressures. This enables the synthesis of Li3P and Na3P at room temperature (RT) starting from element precursors, bypassing the established chemical synthesis methods. Both compounds undergo a pressure-induced phase transition from the hexagonal Na3As-type structure (stable at ambient conditions) towards a Fmm (FCC) structure that remains stable up to 20 GPa. Attempts to synthesize compounds with higher alkali metal content (such as Li5P) using high-temperature and -pressure conditions (up to 2000+ K and 30 GPa), inspired by recent theoretical predictions, were not successful.

The pressure-induced insulator to metal transition (IMT) of layered magnetic nickel phosphorous tri-sulfide NiPS3 was studied in-situ under quasi-uniaxial conditions by means of electrical resistance (R) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. This sluggish transition is shown to occur at 35 GPa. Transport measurements show no evidence of superconductivity to the lowest measured temperature (~ 2 K). The structure results presented here differ from earlier in-situ work that subjected the sample to a different pressure state, suggesting that in NiPS3 the phase stability fields are highly dependent on strain. It is suggested that careful control of the strain is essential when studying the electronic and magnetic properties of layered van der Waals solids.

The structure of the HP phase is trigonal R3, which can be represented as a distortion of the cubic phase B, previously documented at 7���15 GPa and confirmed here. The positions of hydrogen atoms in the HP phase have been obtained from first principles calculations, which also demonstrated the stability of this structure above 260 K at 25 GPa. The molecules occupy four different crystallographic sites in phase B and 11 sites in the HP phase, which result in splitting of molecular stretching modes detected in Raman spectroscopy and assigned here based on a good agreement with the Raman spectra calculated from the first principles. Most of the studied two-dimensional (2D) materials are based on highly symmetric hexagonal structural motifs. In contrast, lower-symmetry structures may have exciting anisotropic properties leading to various applications in nanoelectronics. In this work we report the synthesis of nickel diazenide NiN

Cerium oxide (ceria, CeO2) is frequently used as a standard in applications such as synchrotron and x-ray free electron lasers for calibrating x-ray wavelengths and offers the potential for understanding the high pressure properties and deformation mechanisms in a wide range of similar face centered cubic (fcc) materials. In this study, the pressure dependence of the strength of ceria was investigated up to 38 GPa using angle dispersive x-ray diffraction in a radial geometry in a diamond anvil cell. In this experiment, the difference in the stress along the axis of compression and perpendicular to the direction of compression can be determined, giving a quantity known as the differential stress. It was found that the differential stress ( t), a measure of the lower bound for yield strength, initially increases rapidly from 0.35 ± 0.06 GPa to 2.2 ± 0.4 GPa at pressures of 1.8 and 3.8 GPa, respectively. Above 4 GPa, t increases more slowly to 13.8 ± 2.6 GPa at a pressure of 38 GPa. The changes in the preferred orientation (texture) of CeO2 with pressure were also measured, allowing for the determination of active deformation mechanisms using an elasto-viscoplastic self-consistent model (EVPSC). It was found that as pressure increased, the [001] direction had a slight preferred orientation along the axis of compression. Our EVPSC model of experimental fiber (cylindrically symmetric) textures and lattice strains were most consistent with dominant slip activity along [Formula: see text].

High-pressure chemistry is known to inspire the creation of unexpected new classes of compounds with exceptional properties. Here, we employ the laser-heated diamond anvil cell technique for synthesis of a Dirac material BeN_{4}. A triclinic phase of beryllium tetranitride tr-BeN_{4} was synthesized from elements at ∼85 GPa. Upon decompression to ambient conditions, it transforms into a compound with atomic-thick BeN_{4} layers interconnected via weak van der Waals bonds and consisting of polyacetylene-like nitrogen chains with conjugated π systems and Be atoms in square-planar coordination. Theoretical calculations for a single BeN_{4} layer show that its electronic lattice is described by a slightly distorted honeycomb structure reminiscent of the graphene lattice and the presence of Dirac points in the electronic band structure at the Fermi level. The BeN_{4} layer, i.e., beryllonitrene, represents a qualitatively new class of 2D materials that can be built of a metal atom and polymeric nitrogen chains and host anisotropic Dirac fermions.

High-pressure transitions are thought to modify hydrogen molecules to a molecular metallic solid and finally to an atomic metal1, which is predicted to have exotic physical properties and the topology of a two-component (electron and proton) superconducting superfluid condensate2,3. Therefore, understanding such transitions remains an important objective in condensed matter physics4,5. However, measurements of the crystal structure of solid hydrogen, which provides crucial information about the metallization of hydrogen under compression, are lacking for most high-pressure phases, owing to the considerable technical challenges involved in X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements under extreme conditions. Here we present a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study of solid hydrogen at pressures of up to 254 gigapascals that reveals the crystallographic nature of the transitions from phase I to phases III and IV. Under compression, hydrogen molecules remain in the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) crystal lattice structure, accompanied by a monotonic increase in anisotropy. In addition, the pressure-dependent decrease of the unit cell volume exhibits a slope change when entering phase IV, suggesting a second-order isostructural phase transition. Our results indicate that the precursor to the exotic two-component atomic hydrogen may consist of electronic transitions caused by a highly distorted hcp Brillouin zone and molecular-symmetry breaking. X-ray diffraction measurements of solid hydrogen provide crystallographic information for high-pressure phases of hydrogen and transitions between them, suggesting a series of isostructural transitions under compression before band closure and metallization.

The transparent conducting oxide, SnO2, is a promising optoelectronic material with predicted tailorable properties via pressure-mediated band gap opening. While such electronic properties are typically modeled assuming perfect crystallinity, disordering of the O sublattice under pressure is qualitatively known. Here a quantitative approach is thus employed, combining extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy with X-ray diffraction, to probe the extent of Sn—O bond anharmonicities in the high-pressure cubic (Pa\bar{3}) SnO2 – formed as a single phase and annealed by CO2 laser heating to 2648 ± 41 K at 44.5 GPa. This combinational study reveals and quantifies a large degree of disordering in the O sublattice, while the Sn lattice remains ordered. Moreover, this study describes implementation of direct laser heating of non-metallic samples by CO2 laser alongside EXAFS, and the high quality of data which may be achieved at high pressures in a diamond anvil cell when appropriate thermal annealing is applied.

Earth and planetary science letters 507, 166 - 174 (2019). doi:10.1016/j.epsl.2018.11.038, The pressure-induced amorphization of the two endmembers of the plagioclase ((Na$_{1−x}$Cax)Al$_{1+x}$Si$_{3−x}$O$_8$) solid-solution, anorthite (CaAl$_2$Si$_2$O$_8$) and albite (NaAlSi$_3$O$_8$), has been studied as a function of compression rate by means of time-resolved powder diffraction. Anorthite and albite were compressed in a diamond anvil cell to 80 GPa at multiple rates from 0.05 GPa/s to 80 GPa/s. The amorphization pressure decreases with increasing compression rate. This negative strain rate sensitivity indicates a change in deformation mechanism in the plagioclase solid-solution endmembers from brittle to ductile with increasing compression rate. The presented data support the previously proposed shear deformation mechanism for the amorphization of plagioclase. Furthermore, amorphization progresses over a wide pressure range suggesting heterogeneous amorphization, similar to observations based on recovered material from shock-compression experiments of plagioclase. Water (H$_{2}$O), in all forms, is an important constituent in planetary bodies, controlling habitability and influencing geological activity. Under conditions found in the interior of many planets, as the pressure increases, the H-bonds in water gradually weaken and are replaced by ionic bonds. Recent experimental measurements of the water equation of state (EOS) showed both a new phase of H-bonded water ice, ice-VII$_t$, and a relatively low transition pressure just above 30 GPa to ionic bonded ice-X, which has a bulk modulus 2.5 times larger. The higher bulk modulus of ice-X produces larger planets for a given mass, thereby either reducing the atmospheric contribution to the volume of many exoplanets or limiting their water content. We investigate the impact of the new EOS measurements on the planetary mass-radius relation and interior structure for water-rich planets. We find that the change in the planet mass-radius relation caused by the systematic differences between previous and new experimental EOS measurements are comparable to the observational uncertainties in some planet sizes -- an issue that will become more important as observations continue to improve., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. We have measured the luminescence shifts of the ruby’s R1- and R2-lines and the line of 5D0→7F0 from Sm2+:SrFCl corresponding to the melting pressure of mercury that is recommended by the AIRAPT task force as an International Practical Pressure Scale (IPPS). The linear coefficients of the pressure dependence of the R1-, R2-lines, and the luminescence line of Sm2+:SrFCl are determined to be 0.3722 ± 0.002, 0.3796 ± 0.002, and 1.123 ± 0.002 nm/GPa, respectively. The results not only put tight constraints on the initial slopes of ruby and Sm2+:SrFCl gauges, but also link the luminescence-based pressure gauges to the more fundamental primary piston gauges.

In this work we report the synthesis of nickel diazenide NiN$_2$ which possesses atomic-thick layers comprised of Ni$_2$N$_3$ pentagons forming Cairo-type tessellation. The layers of NiN$_2$ are weakly bonded with the calculated exfoliation energy of 0.72 J/m$^2$, which is just slightly larger than that of graphene. The compound crystallizes in the space group of the ideal Cairo tiling (P4/mbm) and possesses significant anisotropy of elastic properties. The single-layer NiN$_2$ is a direct-band-gap semiconductor, while the bulk material is metallic. This indicates the promise of NiN$_2$ to be a precursor of a pentagonal 2D material with a tunable direct band gap., Published by Soc., Washington, DC

Understanding of recently reported putative close-to-room-temperature superconductivity in C-S-H compounds at 267 GPa demands reproducible synthesis protocol as well as knowledge of its structure and composition. We synthesized C-S-H compounds with various carbon composition at high pressures from elemental C and methane CH4, sulfur S, and molecular hydrogen H2. Here we focus on compounds synthesized using methane as these allow a straightforward determination of their structure and composition by combining single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. We applied a two-stage synthesis of ((CH4)x(H2S)(1-x))2H2 compounds by first reacting sulfur and mixed methane-hydrogen fluids and forming CH4 doped H2S crystals at 0.5-3 GPa, and then by growing single crystals of the desired hydrogen rich compound. Raman spectroscopy applied to this material shows the presence of the CH4 molecules incorporated into the lattice and allows to determine the CH4 content, while single-crystal X-ray diffraction results suggest that the methane molecules substitute H2S ones. The structural behavior of these compounds is very similar to the previously investigated methane free compounds demonstrating a transition from Al2Cu type I4/mcm structure to a modulated structure at 20-30 GPa and back to the same basic structure in an extended modification with greatly modified Raman spectra. This latter phase demonstrates a distortion into Pnma structure at 132-159 GPa and then transforms into a common Im-3m H3S phase at higher pressures, however, no structural anomaly is detected near 220 GPa, where a sharp upturn in Tc has been reported., Comment: Main Text: 18 pages, 9 figures, 1 Table, 36 references

High-pressure metallic $\ensuremath{\beta}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Sn}$ silicon (Si-II), depending on temperature, decompression rate, stress, etc., may transform to diverse metastable forms with promising semiconducting properties under decompression. However, the underlying mechanisms governing the different transformation paths are not well understood. Here, two distinctive pathways, viz., a thermally activated crystal-crystal transition and a mechanically driven amorphization, were characterized under rapid decompression of Si-II at various temperatures using in situ time-resolved x-ray diffraction. Under slow decompression, Si-II transforms to a crystalline bc8/r8 phase in the pressure range of 4.3--9.2 GPa through a thermally activated process where the overdepressurization and the onset transition strain are strongly dependent on decompression rate and temperature. In comparison, Si-II collapses structurally to an amorphous form at around 4.3 GPa when the volume expansion approaches a critical strain via rapid decompression beyond a threshold rate. The occurrence of the critical strain indicates a limit of the structural metastability of Si-II, which separates the thermally activated and mechanically driven transition processes. The results show the coupled effect of decompression rate, activation barrier, and thermal energy on the adopted transformation paths, providing atomistic insight into the competition between equilibrium and nonequilibrium pathways and the resulting metastable phases.

We report the atomic- and nanosecond-scale quantification of kinetics of a shock-driven phase transition in Zr metal. We uniquely make use of a multiple shock-and-release loading pathway to shock Zr into the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ phase and to create a quasisteady pressure and temperature state shortly after. Coupling shock loading with in situ time-resolved synchrotron x-ray diffraction, we probe the structural transformation of Zr in the steady state. Our results provide a quantified expression of kinetics of formation of $\ensuremath{\beta}$-Zr phase under shock loading: transition incubation time, completion time, and crystallization rate.

We have performed an extensive pressure-dependent structural, spectroscopic, and electrical transport study of LaCrSb$_3$. The ferromagnetic phase (T$_C$ = 120 K at p = 0 GPa) is fully suppressed by p = 26.5 GPa and the Cr-moment decreases steadily with increasing pressure. The unit cell volume decreases smoothly up to p = 55 GPa. We find that the bulk modulus and suppression of the magnetism are in good agreement with theoretical predictions, but the Cr-moment decreases smoothly with pressure, in contrast to steplike drops predicted by theory. We synthesized a new allotrope of nitrogen, providing prospects for nitrogen-based high-energy-density materials and 2D materials., Group V elements in crystal structure isostructural to black phosphorus with unique puckered two-dimensional layers exhibit exciting physical and chemical phenomena. However, as the first element of group V, nitrogen has never been found in the black phosphorus structure. Here, we report the synthesis of the black phosphorus–structured nitrogen at 146 GPa and 2200 K. Metastable black phosphorus–structured nitrogen was retained after quenching it to room temperature under compression and characterized in situ during decompression to 48 GPa, using synchrotron x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. We show that the original molecular nitrogen is transformed into extended single-bonded structure through gauche and trans conformations. Raman spectroscopy shows that black phosphorus–structured nitrogen is strongly anisotropic and exhibits high Raman intensities in two Ag normal modes. Synthesis of black phosphorus–structured nitrogen provides a firm base for exploring new type of high-energy-density nitrogen and a new direction of two-dimensional nitrogen.

We have performed pressure dependent X-ray diffraction and resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy experiments on USb$_2$ to further characterize the AFM-FM transition occurring near 8 GPa. We have found the magnetic transition coincides with a tetragonal to orthorhombic transition resulting in a 17% volume collapse as well as a transient $\textit{f}$-occupation enhancement. Compared to UAs$_2$ and UAsS, USb$_2$ shows a reduced bulk modulus and transition pressure and an increased volume collapse at the structural transition. The majority of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cases are caused by a chromosomal translocation linking the breakpoint cluster region (BCR) gene to the Abelson murine leukemia viral oncogene-1 (ABL1), creating the mutant fusion protein BCR-ABL1. Downstream of BCR-ABL1 is growth factor receptor-bound protein-2 (GRB2), an intracellular adapter protein that binds to BCR-ABL1 via its src-homology-2 (SH2) domain. This binding constitutively activates growth pathways, downregulates apoptosis, and leads to an over proliferation of immature and dysfunctional myeloid cells. Utilizing novel synthetic methods, we developed four furo-quinoxaline compounds as GRB2 SH2 domain antagonists with the goal of disrupting this leukemogenic signaling. One of the four antagonists, NHD2-15, showed a significant reduction in proliferation of K562 cells, a human BCR-ABL1+ leukemic cell line. To elucidate the mode of action of these compounds, various biophysical, in vitro, and in vivo assays were performed. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) assays indicated that NHD2-15 antagonized GRB2, binding with a KD value of 119 ± 2 μM. Cellulose nitrate (CN) assays indicated that the compound selectively bound the SH2 domain of GRB2. Western blot assays suggested the antagonist downregulated proteins involved in leukemic transformation. Finally, NHD2-15 was nontoxic to primary cells and adult zebrafish, indicating that it may be an effective clinical treatment for CML.

Diamond anvil cell techniques have been improved to allow access to the multimegabar ultrahigh-pressure region for exploring novel phenomena in condensed matter. However, the only way to determine crystal structures of materials above 100 GPa, namely, X-ray diffraction (XRD), especially for low Z materials, remains nontrivial in the ultrahigh-pressure region, even with the availability of brilliant synchrotron X-ray sources. In this work, we perform a systematic study, choosing hydrogen (the lowest X-ray scatterer) as the subject, to understand how to better perform XRD measurements of low Z materials at multimegabar pressures. The techniques that we have developed have been proved to be effective in measuring the crystal structure of solid hydrogen up to 254 GPa at room temperature [C. Ji et al., Nature 573, 558-562 (2019)]. We present our discoveries and experiences with regard to several aspects of this work, namely, diamond anvil selection, sample configuration for ultrahigh-pressure XRD studies, XRD diagnostics for low Z materials, and related issues in data interpretation and pressure calibration. We believe that these methods can be readily extended to other low Z materials and can pave the way for studying the crystal structure of hydrogen at higher pressures, eventually testing structural models of metallic hydrogen. On compression of α-cristobalite SiO2 to pressures above approximately 12 GPa, a new polymorph known as cristobalite X-I forms. The existence of cristobalite X-I has been known for several decades; however, consensus regarding its exact atomic arrangement has not yet been reached. The X-I phase constitutes an important step in the silica densification process, separating low-density tetrahedral framework phases from high-density octahedral polymorphs. It is the only nonquenchable high-density SiO2 phase, which reverts to the low-density form on decompression at ambient temperature. Recently, an experimental study proposed an octahedral model of SiO2 X-I with intrinsic structural defects involving partial Si site occupancies. In contrast, our new single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments have shown that the ideal structure of this phase should instead be described by a defect-free model, which does not require partial occupancies. Significance To understand water’s anomalous behavior, a two-liquid model with a high-density liquid and a low-density liquid (LDL) has been proposed from theoretical simulations, and is gradually gaining ground. However, it has been experimentally challenging to probe the region of the phase diagram of H2O where the LDL phase is expected to occur. We overcome the experimental challenge by using a technique of rapid decompression integrated with fast synchrotron measurements, and show that the region of LDL is accessible via decompression of a high-pressure crystal. We report the experimental evidence of the LDL from in situ X-ray diffraction and its crystallization process, providing a kinetic pathway for the appearance of LDL as an intermediate phase in the crystal–crystal transformation upon decompression., Water is an extraordinary liquid, having a number of anomalous properties which become strongly enhanced in the supercooled region. Due to rapid crystallization of supercooled water, there exists a region that has been experimentally inaccessible for studying deeply supercooled bulk water. Using a rapid decompression technique integrated with in situ X-ray diffraction, we show that a high-pressure ice phase transforms to a low-density noncrystalline (LDN) form upon rapid release of pressure at temperatures of 140–165 K. The LDN subsequently crystallizes into ice-Ic through a diffusion-controlled process. Together with the change in crystallization rate with temperature, the experimental evidence indicates that the LDN is a low-density liquid (LDL). The measured X-ray diffraction data show that the LDL is tetrahedrally coordinated with the tetrahedral network fully developed and clearly linked to low-density amorphous ices. On the other hand, there is a distinct difference in structure between the LDL and supercooled water or liquid water in terms of the tetrahedral order parameter.

Hafnium (Hf) is an industrially important material due to its large neutron absorption cross-section and its high corrosion resistance. When subjected to high pressure, Hf phase transforms from its hexagonal close packed α-Hf phase to the hexagonal ω-Hf phase. Upon further compression, ω-Hf phase transforms to the body centered cubic β-Hf phase. In this study, the high pressure phase transformations of Hf are studied by compressing and decompressing a well-characterized Hf sample in diamond anvil cells up to 120 GPa while collecting x-ray diffraction data. The phase transformations of Hf were compared in both a He pressure transmitting medium (PTM) and no PTM over several experiments. It was found that the α-Hf to ω-Hf phase transition occurs at a higher pressure during compression and lower pressure during decompression with a helium (He) PTM compared to using no PTM. There was little difference in the ω-Hf to β-Hf phase transition pressure between the He PTM and no PTM. The equation of state was fit for all three phases of Hf and under both PTM and no-PTM.

We present pressure-induced phase transitions and metallization in VO2 nanoparticles characterized by synchrotron x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and infrared reflectivity measurements. The M1-M1′-Mx phase transitions were found in VO2 nanoparticles upon compression. The results of IR reflectivity shown that pressure-induced metallization occurs in the M1′ phase with increasing pressure and the sample becomes fully metallic at the transition of M1′ to Mx. The metallic Mx phase transforms to metastable mixed phases displaying insulating properties upon decompression. We attribute the pressure-induced metallization of the M1′ phase to the strong electron correlations, while the metal-insulator transition (MIT) from the Mx to the mixed phases is found to be associated with the structural phase transitions. Both the electron-correlation-driven Mott transition and the structure-driven MIT can be achieved in VO2 by applying pressure. Compared with bulk samples, the VO2 nanoparticles exhibit larger bulk moduli and increased transition pressure due to their nanosize effects. High pressure provides an effective method to study the MIT in strongly correlated materials and paves the way for modifying electronic properties of VO2.

"Chemical precompression" through introducing impurity atoms into hydrogen has been proposed as a method to facilitate metallization of hydrogen under external pressure. Here we selected Ar(H2)2, a hydrogen-rich compound with molecular hydrogen, to explore the effect of "doping" on the intermolecular interaction of H2 molecules and metallization at ultrahigh pressure. Ar(H2)2 was studied experimentally by synchrotron X-ray diffraction to 265 GPa, by Raman and optical absorption spectroscopy to 358 GPa, and theoretically using the density-functional theory. Our measurements of the optical bandgap and the vibron frequency show that Ar(H2)2 retains 2-eV bandgap and H2 molecular units up to 358 GPa. This is attributed to reduced intermolecular interactions between H2 molecules in Ar(H2)2 compared with that in solid H2 A splitting of the molecular vibron mode above 216 GPa suggests an orientational ordering transition, which is not accompanied by a change in lattice symmetry. The experimental and theoretical equations of state of Ar(H2)2 provide direct insight into the structure and bonding of this hydrogen-rich system, suggesting a negative chemical pressure on H2 molecules brought about by doping of Ar.

A novel approach that spatially identifies inhomogeneities from microscale (defects, con-formational disorder) to mesoscale (voids, inclusions) is developed using synchrotron x-ray methods: tomography, Lang topography, and micro-diffraction mapping. These techniques provide a non-destructive method for characterization of mm-sized samples prior to shock experiments. These characterization maps can be used to correlate continuum level measurements in shock compression experiments to the mesoscale and microscale structure. Specifically examined is a sample of C4. We show extensive conformational disorder in gamma-RDX, which is the main component. Further, we observe that the minor HMX-component in C4 contains at least two different phases: alpha- and beta-HMX in spatially variable amounts. PETN sprayed film was found to be very homogeneously fine grained with modest preferred orientation of crystallites and modest rotational disorder of nitro-groups.

We investigate the phase diagram of lithium at temperatures of 200 to 400 K, to pressures over 100 GPa using x-ray diffraction in diamond anvil cells, covering the region in which the melting curve is disputed. To overcome degradation of the diamond anvils by dense lithium we utilize a rapid compression scheme taking advantage of the high flux available at modern synchrotrons. Our results show the $hR1$ and $cI16$ phases to be stable to higher temperature than previously reported. The melting minima of lithium is found to be close to room temperature between 40 and 60 GPa, below which the solid is crystalline. Analysis of the stability fields of the $cI16$ and $oC88$ phases suggest the existence of a triple point between these and an undetermined solid phase at 60 GPa between 220 and 255 K.

We report polyamorphic transformations of ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ under isothermal compression and decompression at 150 K, observed by in situ x-ray diffraction. Detailed structural information across the transformations among low-, high-, and very-high-density amorphs (LDA, HDA, and VHDA) reveals the mechanisms, the reversibility, and (dis)continuity of the transformations. During isothermal (de)compression, the polyamorphic transformations are characterized by a sharp and reversible LDA-VHDA transformation, with an HDA-like form (referred to as HDA\ensuremath{'}) appearing as an intermediate state. The LDA-VHDA transformation is found to occur in two steps: a discontinuous transition between LDA and the end member of HDA\ensuremath{'} on the low-pressure side, followed by a continuous change within HDA\ensuremath{'} involving structural reconfigurations and finally converging to VHDA. Both LDA and VHDA are found to be structurally stable showing mainly elastic behavior under (de)compression, while HDA\ensuremath{'} is structurally unstable. Possible relations of these observations to low- and high-density liquids are discussed.
