This diploma thesis deals with the persuasive devices used in journalistic articles, French and Czech, and their comparison within these two languages. The thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part, the theoretical one, the thesis focuses mainly on the definition of the concept of persuasion and how it manifests itself within journalism. Then, it deals with the description of the journalistic style and journalism in general in the Czech and French settings and traces any differences between the two countries and cultures. In the second part, analytical one, it works with a specific sample of selected journalistic texts, demonstrating and observing these persuasive devices and assessing their relevance and frequency of their usage, again with the intention of documenting possible differences in the Czech and French settings, as well as differences in terms of different genres of journalism. However, the majority of the texts are news texts. This sample of texts focuses on a single theme concerning news and other journalistic articles reporting on the covid-2019 epidemic. The aim of the thesis is to compare the approach of the two concepts of persuasive means and to identify possible differences in their use. This comparison can be made at the level of differences between the two countries, as well as between different journalistic genres. The thesis also includes a set of selected journalistic articles that served as a basis for the analytical part of the thesis.

The diploma thesis offers an analysis of a unique set of texts. The analysis explores the language devices used in the composition of the texts. The set of texts includes a short story Groza by Vladimir Nabokov and its translations. The short story was originally written in Russian, and then translated by the author into English. There exist two Czech translations, one from Russian, one from English. The thesis presents a theoretical framework for the analysis. It is composed of two parts. The first one summarizes the most frequent translation related changes in meaning. The second one compares Nabokov's theory and practice of translation. The theoretical framework is applied to the comparison of the target-language texts with the source-language texts, as well as to the comparison of the two translations from different source-language texts. Comparison of the results of the analysis with the hypotheses stated in the Introduction affirms the movement of the meaning towards stylistic neutrality and shows the influence of the source-language upon the target-language. On the other hand it rejects the statement that Nabokov as a self-translator wanted to preserve the literary qualities of the text, being ready to sacrifice its language qualities. This thesis deals with the issue of using songs in English language teaching at lower secondary schools. The thesis comprises of two parts a theoretical one and a practical one. In the theoretical part, I mostly describe and explain the basic terms used, such as song, music and rhythm. The teaching methodology and song activities that can be used in English lessons are also included in this part. Further, I also deal with the influence of music on students and the atmosphere in the classroom in connection with music. Based on these findings, I prepared four English lesson plans in accordance with Educational Framework and school curriculum. These lessons also correspond to the topics or grammatical structures that the students currently deal with in their lessons. The main focus is placed on the skills and subskills that are developed by the particular activities. All these lessons were put into practise at lower secondary school level. Subsequently, I also give feedback on these lessons. Another part of this thesis consists of an analysis of English textbooks with respect to the usage of songs and song activities in lessons. For this purpose, four volumes of the textbook Project Third Edition were chosen. These textbooks were analysed from the point of view of the main educational aims and types of activities, mostly with respect to the skills and subskills practised via these songs.
