Purpose This paper aims to contribute to the research on the use of reflection in the work environment, highlighting its use in the development of interpersonal skills. This study presents procedures for promoting critical reflection using critical incidents, dialogue and reflective diaries, which can be a reference for researchers, managers, consultants and corporate educators. Design/methodology/approach This research was guided by an interpretative qualitative approach that is suitable for the study of critical reflection. The authors chose the method of action research because of its interactionist and interventionist character, which allows for the evaluation of the leadership soft skills development experience. Findings A leadership soft skills development program based on the concept of critical reflection in the work context leads to leaders having potential to promote changes in management practices and enhancing behavior, and the study points out the conditions necessary for success in instituting the desired changes and transformation. Practical implications The proposed developmental model, based on reflective conversations of critical incidents, dialogue and reflective diaries, stimulates critical reflection. This can be applied by other actors who are interested in promoting assessment and the development of soft skills. Originality/value There are few studies that discuss critical reflection in the corporate environment. In particular, few present models or tools that foster a reflective view of one’s assumptions, beliefs and values. This research not only advances this proposal by introducing considerations from practical experience as developed through action research, but it also signals the high potential of the study’s approach to promoting the development of soft skills.

The relation between the institutional frameworks and the promotion of gender equality, considering the corporate social responsibility (CSR) movement, has been scarcely analyzed from the experiences of developing economies. We aimed to contribute to fill that gap, bringing to the debate the concepts of emancipation in organizations and support groups. We asked: in which ways, gender equality fostered by initiatives implemented in developing economies by transnational corporations in the form of support groups allow for organizational transformations that strengthen the process of women's emancipation in the corporate world? So, an ethnography was undertaken within a transnational company of the financial sector that operates in Brazil. The results show that these initiatives can only lead to organizational transformations that strengthen women's empowerment if they are inscribed in an institutional framework that guarantees the participation of multiple actors. Resumen: La relación entre los arreglos institucionales y la promoción de la equidad de género, considerando el movimiento de Responsabilidad Social Empresarial (RSE), apenas fue analizada en el contexto de las economías en desarrollo. Pretendemos contribuir a esta brecha, a partir del lente conceptual de emancipación y grupos de soporte. Preguntamos cómo la equidad de género impulsada en las economías en desarrollo por iniciativas de empresas transnacionales, a través de grupos de soporte, permite transformaciones organizacionales que fortalecen la emancipación de las mujeres en las organizaciones. Respondiendo a esta pregunta, presentamos los resultados de una etnografía realizada en una empresa transnacional en Brasil. Los hallazgos evidencian que esta iniciativa puede conducir a un proceso de emancipación siempre cuando exista un marco institucional que garantiza la participación de múltiples actores. Resumo: A relação dos arranjos institucionais e do movimento da Responsabilidade Social Empresarial (RSE) com a igualdade de gênero tem sido escassamente analisada no contexto de economias em desenvolvimento. Pretendemos contribuir com o preenchimento desta lacuna, trazendo para o debate os conceitos de emancipação nas organizações e grupos de suporte. Indagamos de que maneira a igualdade de gênero fomentada em economias em desenvolvimento por iniciativas de corporações transnacionais, por meio de grupos de suporte, permite transformações organizacionais que fortalecem a emancipação das mulheres nas organizações? Para responder a essa pergunta, apresentamos os resultados de uma etnografia feita em uma empresa transnacional que atua no Brasil. Os achados evidenciam que esta iniciativa pode levar a transformações organizacionais que fortaleçam o empoderamento das mulheres se elas se inscreverem em um quadro institucional que garanta a participação de múltiplos atores.

The Covid-19 pandemic has reinforced remote teaching (RT) as a trend in management education. This research reflects on the central elements that make RT a transformative learning (TL) experience, based on a case study of a TL-anchored sustainability discipline that was migrated to RL during the pandemic. Theoretically, we propose a framework or reference that combines TL, education for sustainability (EfS), and communicative ecosystem (CE) theories; we also extend the concept of RL, coining the term ‘transformative remote teaching’ (TRT). With regard to practice, students’ feedback points to three elements that are key for TRT: exploring different windows of knowledge; rethinking the teaching role; and adapting tools to support the teaching-learning process. We conclude by highlighting the need to approach education in ways anchored in epistemological, paradigmatic, and transformative changes.

The adoption of the logic of developing sustainable development (SD) competences in the business environment has grown both in the literature in the area and in business initiative programs. One player that emerges with the aim of assuming leadership in this process is the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). This article aims to answer the following research question: Are the WBCSD’s discourses and initiatives for developing sustainability competences spaces of various translations of corporate sustainability or a place for reaffirming logocentric and definitive discourses on the theme? For this, we analyzed the institutional documents (Vision 2050 and Action 2020) and carried out a series of on-site visits at the Brazilian and Portuguese BCSDs. In addition, we conducted a set of in-depth interviews with the managers and participants in the initiatives for developing sustainability competences (DSC). The data were analyzed according to the categories of Derrida’s deconstruction process. The analysis of the educational initiatives of the Brazilian and Portuguese BCSDs showed that they include the various discourses on corporate sustainability in their formative approach; however, logocentric and definitive thinking about the theme is reaffirmed in that the way the Vision 2050 guidelines are carried out is limited to the application of management tools.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the possible benefits of approaching sustainability-related teaching cases from the perspective of problem-posing (PP) instead of problem-solving (PS). Design/methodology/approach A document analysis methodology (Silverman, 2011) was used to analyze sustainability teaching case study abstracts and learning objectives from business databases. Cases were reviewed and classified as PP, PS or other. PP cases were further subclassified on one of three axes. Findings Of 117 cases reviewed, most were PS (66%) with only 9% PP. Theoretical and pedagogical implications are discussed with recommendations for writing or converting, PS to PP cases for classroom use. Theoretical contributions include identification of three distinct and complementary views of PP, described in these axes: emancipatory; problematizing metaphors and premises; and rational, process and means-focused cases, not triggering transformative learning theory. Of 10 cases classified as PP cases, 3 were subclassified as emancipatory. Research limitations/implications This research is limited to case study titles containing “sustainability” and analyses of their descriptions and learning objectives only. Next phases of the research will examine differences in student learning between PS and PP in situ. Practical implications The research identifies a unique approach to the authoring and use of case studies that hold the potential for increasing students’ critical thinking capabilities and production of solutions to sustainability issues. Originality/value There is limited research and analysis of the identification and implications of using PP pedagogy.

Purpose – This study aims to explain how the process of organizational socialization of newcomers occurs in a public faculty. Design/methodology/approach – This qualitative and interpretativist research was conducted under an interactionist approach. We interviewed 14 newcomers and also experienced government employees from a state public faculty in Sao Paulo. The content of the interviews was analyzed by a categorization process. Findings – The findings show that socialization of newcomers is self-motivated, informal, non-institutionalized, influenced by the normative nature of work and insufficient support given by the group. Newcomers’ admission into the workplace does not cause serious conflicts or tensions that could lead to changes in the workplace. It is the proactive behavior of the newcomers that allows them to adapt to work and know traditions, beliefs and history of the organization. Research limitations/implications – The limitation of this study is the context of a public university’s workplace. Practical implications – This research allows the organization to get information about the triangular relationship between challenge, support and trust which could have direct effects on the newcomers’ workplace learning. Social implications – We propose that the organization creates a workplace in which the employees can feel strong bonds of solidarity and collectivism, and in which they could have concrete opportunities to realize that their work can contribute to something important, impacting, in the group and in the organization. Originality/value – This study articulates the concepts of organizational socialization, proactive behavior and self-socialization, which may provide future implications for public management in universities.

This research examines social learning for sustainability (SLfS), particularly in its social dimension. Few studies have discussed or advanced on the ontological issues of SLfS relating to who social actors are becoming. This study aims to describe and analyze how the process of SLfS facilitates Brazilian families who were at the base of the social pyramid (no income) to change the status from landless campers to family farmers with land moving up four levels in the social pyramid over a decade. The research is qualitative interpretative, based on narratives from semi-structured interviews with 16 social actors and document analysis. The results show the meaning of learning professional ways of being family farmers from an existential ontological perspective.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to argue for the need for more critical-reflective teaching-learning experiences in finance teaching, capable of promoting changes in students’ frames of reference toward sustainability. The aim was to evaluate the levels of reflection and the transformative learning experiences perceived by undergraduate students enrolled in three finance disciplines at a Business Administration course of a Brazilian business school. This course has been the object of pedagogical experience toward sustainability teaching-learning for some years. Design/methodology/approach The authors used mixed data. For quantitative data, the authors collected 188 questionnaires, as well as 160 student-written reports for qualitative data. Findings Incorporating sustainability topics into finance disciplines, longitudinally, stimulates critical reflection and transformations in students’ mindsets toward sustainable rationality in finance. Despite the high number of agreements with reflection and critical reflection levels, emphasis only on the theoretical discussion of sustainability presuppositions does little to contribute to the practical application of concepts. Research limitations/implications Although the study was conducted in a particular Business School, the authors expect that the results can be replicated and improved in comparative studies, encouraging transformative learning in the teaching-learning of finance. Practical implications The results show the potential and limitations of the experiences studied and its implications for theoretical and didactics in finance teaching. The discussions and the examples of practical activities presented can bring contributions to educators, professors and researchers. Originality/value Few studies in finance seeks to evaluate pedagogical experiences from the point of view of students’ learning, especially in relation to the development of a new rationality.

Critical reflection and transformative learning theories generally place emphasis on individual change, giving little consideration to the organizational and societal aspects. Consequently, it is individual and not collective dilemmas that are reinforced in higher education. However, a call for an education initiative for sustainable development requires a shift in focus. This article considers transformative learning for sustainability within the context of an American university whose mission encompasses being a center for excellence in transformative teaching and learning. The analysis is divided into three parts as follows: The organizing reflection process of the university; b) how professors concretize collective dilemma in their teaching; and c) student engagement levels in collective dilemmas with regard to the tenets of service learning and civic engagement. Despite its unique trajectory, this qualitative case study presents an argument – in order to achieve a paradigmatic shift toward sustainability, we need to create an organizing process of reflection to address collective dilemmas and engage faculty and students in a continuous and institutionalized transformative learning process. The results show the potential and limitations of the analyzed experience; further, it addresses the theoretical implications and practical insights for fostering critical reflection and transformative learning toward sustainability.

RESUMO O propósito deste artigo é estudar a língua em viagem na tradução do desenvolvimento sustentável para empresários do Brasil e de Portugal. O World Business Concil for Sustainable (WBCSD), entidade foco deste estudo, atua no percurso de significação com a publicação de guias que visam orientar o discurso de gestão sustentável no ambiente corporativo. Na pesquisa analisou-se a disputa de poder que ocorre na definição do conceito de desenvolvimento sustentável (DS) e se propôs a metáfora think tanke como modo de traduzir a relação dos empresários com a questão socioambiental. A análise dos discursos, a luz da desconstrução de Derrida, permitiu estudar as estruturas políticas e institucionais que facilitam e dificultam a acolhida da discussão de desenvolvimento sustentável. Essas estruturas foram desenvolvidas na “história do pensamento ocidental”, seja por meio de “textos filosóficos”, ou em “formas e instituições tais como o governo, a universidade, a identidade nacional, o conceito de dom ou a ideia de enlutamento” (WOLFREYS, 2009, p. 51). Há o luto da presença, o luto da razão, o luto do sujeito e o luto de qualquer instância soberana (DERRIDA, 2013, p. 105). Verificou-se que a metáfora da Empresa Sustentável, desenvolvida neste processo de tradução, é insuficiente para acolher as diversas interpretações já que o intuito é assimilar e integrar. Na metáfora think tanke, por sua vez, reconhece-se a língua em viagem que demonstra as contradições e ambiguidades do discurso do WBCSD e acolhe as diversas traduções sobre DS. Assume-se um pensamento de alteridade que se traduz na desconstrução da relação entre hóspede (questão socioambiental) e hospedeiro (empresa). O hospedeiro torna-se refém das imprevisibilidades do hóspede (alterações climáticas, disponibilidade de água, biodiversidade etc), já que o “hospedeiro torna-se hóspede do hóspede” (DERRIDA, 2003, p. 109). ABSTRACT The purpose of this article is to study the language in travel in the translation of sustainable development for businessmen from Brazil and Portugal. The WBCSD, the entity that is the focus of this study, acts in the route of meaning with the publication of guides that aim to guide the discourse of sustainable management in the corporate environment. The survey analyzed the power struggle that occurs in the definition of the concept of sustainable development (SD) and proposed to think tanke metaphor as a way to translate the relationship of business with social and environmental issues. The analysis of the discourses, in the light of the deconstruction of Derrida, allowed to study the political and institutional structures that facilitate and hinder the reception of the discussion of sustainable development. These structures were developed in the “history of Western thought,” either through “philosophical texts”, or “forms and institutions such as government, university, national identity, the concept of gift or the idea of grieving” (WOLFREYS, 2009, p. 51). There is the mourning of presence, the mourning of reason, the mourning of the subject and the mourning of any sovereign authority (DERRIDA, 2013, p. 105). The metaphor of the Sustainable Company, developed in this process of translation, was found to be insufficient to accommodate the different interpretations since the intention is to assimilate and integrate. The think tanke metaphor, on the other hand, recognizes the language in travel that demonstrates the contradictions and ambiguities of the WBCSD’s discourse and welcomes the diverse translations on SD. It assumes a thought of alterity that translates into the deconstruction of the relation between guest (socio-environmental question) and host (company). The host becomes hostage to the vagaries of the guest (climate change, water availability, biodiversity etc), as the “ host becomes the hostage of the guest” (Derrida, 2003, p. 109).

O propósito desse estudo é expandir as discussões da literatura de Aprendizagem Social para Sustentabilidade, direcionada à temática de problemas ambientais, ao analisar o processo de aprendizagem social à luz da sustentabilidade social, em um projeto de combate à pobreza. Trata-se de um estudo de caso em uma rede de empreendimentos pertencente ao Programa Mulher Empreendedora do Instituto Consulado da Mulher, a principal ação social da marca Consul. A observação não participante foi a principal técnica de coleta de dados, complementada por análises documentais e entrevistas semiestruturadas. Como resultados, três fatores-chave são responsáveis por estimular a aprendizagem social entre as participantes: (a) a possibilidade de troca de experiências, devido ao formato da rede de empreendimentos; (b) o estímulo à qualidade de um diálogo mais aberto e democrático; (c) a necessidade de um mediador, encarregado pelo processo de facilitação das discussões e reflexões. Os fatores-chave criaram condições para a existência de cinco elementos críticos que influenciaram, em maior ou menor grau, o nível de aprendizagem social: (1) reflexão e pensamento crítico; (2) negociação e colaboração; (3) barreiras ao processo de aprendizagem; (4) participação e engajamento; (5) comunicação. Tais resultados também trazem implicações práticas para gestores que desejam criar projetos similares, especialmente em relação à construção de processos de mediação dos diálogos via a figura do educador social.

Meeting the sustainable development complex requirements in a scenario, which involves multiple social actors, relationships, contexts, and interests, has demanded new business models. Thus, this chapter discusses how one of the largest companies in Latin America's chemical segment formed a network with 23 social actors and has built a Corporate Social Entrepreneurship model to deal with the dialectic between return on investments for its shareholders and benefits for its stakeholders. Research was conducted based on Boje's narrative analysis. The data was built through interviews, informal conversations, textual and audiovisual documents, and non-participant observation. The chapter describes the Corporate Social Entrepreneurship model's elements and in this manner contributes to the discussion of the role of Academia, Industry, and Government in entrepreneurship.

Segundo Oliveira (2004a), o empreendedor social precisa ter determinadas competências, habilidades, conhecimentos e posturas. Diante disso, o objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar os resultados de uma revisão sistemática da literatura sobre empreendedorismo social e o desenvolvimento de competências, respondendo as seguintes questões de pesquisa: quais competências precisam ser desenvolvidas e que são necessárias para aumentar as chances de um empreendedor social ter chance nos negócios? E quais lacunas teóricas existentes na literatura mundial? O primeiro passo da análise foi definir os critérios de seleção da pesquisa. Devido ao fato de que esta revisão tem várias fontes a serem consideradas, dois tipos de busca de estratégias foram considerados de acordo com os estudos de Beecham (2007). Dos 116 artigos selecionados para o estudo 14 envolvem os conceitos de empreendedorismo social e desenvolvimento de competência. Os resultados indicaram que: i) não existe uma definição clara sobre as competências para o empreendedor social ter sucesso nos negócios, ii) existe uma lacuna teórica, (iii) é importante para a comunidade que pesquisa competências para aumentar o número de estudos que abordam empreendedorismo social, iv) há uma curva de crescimento do número de publicações na última década. This article describes and analyzes a proposal for the teaching-learning of strategic management for business students, from the angle of critical reflection (CR) presuppositions. The proposal was designed to broaden the dominant rationality in teaching strategies at business schools and has been in progress since 2011 in a Brazilian business school. We argued that changes in the organizational environment and in competition demand not only a review of strategy theoretical content, but also of the way that strategy is taught with more critical and reflective teaching-learning approaches. We conducted a survey to analyze the results of this educational experience from students&rsquo, points of view. Considering a sample of 165 undergraduate students who have taken the course since its implementation, we evaluated the students&rsquo, CR levels. The results present implications for professors, business schools, and researchers, revealing challenging aspects and also CR enhancers in the context of the undergraduate strategy initiative. We expect that the described experience can be replicated and improved in comparative studies in different geographical and disciplinary contexts, encouraging the evaluation and promotion of CR in the teaching of strategic management in business education.

Apesar da crescente atenção que o conceito de desaprendizagem tem recebido nos estudos em administração e organizações, há poucas evidências empíricas sobre a relação entre este fenômeno e a aquisição de novas aprendizagens. Assim, por meio de um estudo qualitativo básico, objetivou-se analisar o desenvolvimento de novas competências individuais por um grupo de supervisores de uma organização industrial, a partir de um evento catalisador da desaprendizagem, qual seja a implantação de um sistema de gestão da qualidade. Os resultados mostram que a situação de desaprendizagem propiciou a criação de um contexto favorável à adoção de uma postura crítica e de questionamento por parte dos sujeitos, levando-os a novas formulações sobre o significado do trabalho executado e, assim, ao desenvolvimento e emprego de novos atributos de competência. Os resultados implicam o entendimento de que a desaprendizagem individual mostra-se como um elemento facilitador da adoção de uma atitude de reflexão e da alteração de compreensões previamente assimiladas, ao contrário das abordagens que a concebem como um processo de abandono ou esquecimento de aprendizados. Assim, o fenômeno ganha sentido não como o oposto da aprendizagem, mas como um elemento integrado à relação dinâmica existente entre a aprendizagem e a aquisição de novas competências, especialmente nas situações em que há baixa prontidão das pessoas para a aquisição de novos aprendizados.

O objetivo deste trabalho e apresentar a fenomenografia como alternativa metodologica de pesquisa para os estudos da competencia profissional. Embora Bittencourt, Azevedo e Froehlich (2013) apresentem a fenomenografia como uma possibilidade para os estudos neste campo, a escassez de ensaios teoricos e estudos empiricos utilizando a fenomenografia nos periodicos nacionais mostra que essa abordagem e pouco conhecida dos pesquisadores brasileiros. Em geral, os estudos nesse campo fundamentam-se em uma ontologia realista e uma epistemologia positivista, que, embora tenham contribuido para a popularizacao da nocao de competencias em ambientes organizacionais, apresentam limitacoes. A fenomenografia e apresentada como uma alternativa para suprir algumas lacunas deixadas por esses estudos. Para atingir esse objetivo, segue o seguinte percurso: (1) Apresenta as origens da fenomenografia, seus principais conceitos, obras de referencia e implicacoes para o estudo da competencia profissional; (2) Apresenta tambem um estudo empirico como um exemplo de como conduzir uma pesquisa fenomenografica. Os resultados desse estudo empirico mostram que a maneira como as pessoas concebem suas atividades profissionais influencia a forma como desenvolvem a competencia para realiza-las. Espera-se que, a partir desse texto, pesquisadores e praticantes se apropriem dessa abordagem que oferece novas possibilidades para a descricao e para o desenvolvimento da competencia de pessoas em ambientes organizacionais.

O Propósito de Vida de uma pessoa é desenvolvido e modificado ao longo de toda a vida, mas é durante a juventude que acontece uma das suas etapas mais importantes, uma vez que ocorre também o processo de formação da identidade pessoal (Bronk, 2011; Erikson, 1976). Apesar de estudos na área revelarem diversos benefícios de se ter um propósito - tais como maior bem-estar psicológico, físico e social, sentimentos de gratidão, empatia e esperança, maior longevidade, além de redução de stress, ansiedade e depressão -, poucos jovens conseguem identificar o seu Propósito de Vida (Damon, 2008). A Educação é indicada como um espaço importante para apoiar os jovens nesse processo de desenvolvimento do propósito (Damon, 2008; Koshy & Mariano, 2011; Malin, 2008). No entanto, pouca pesquisa foi dedicada a como o propósito é descoberto ou como ele é buscado ao longo do tempo (Bronk, 2014, p. 91) e é nesse sentido que esta tese visa contribuir. Sendo assim, a pergunta de pesquisa deste estudo é \"Como o Propósito de Vida dos estudantes pode ser desenvolvido no Ensino Superior?\". O contexto de desenvolvimento da pesquisa foi o Ensino Superior de Administração brasileiro. Dada a diversidade de opções de carreiras que o estudante possui nesta área, ter mais clareza sobre o seu Propósito de Vida pode ajudá-lo a fazer uma escolha profissional coerente. A pesquisa foi realizada em duas faculdades de Administração - FEA/USP e Centro Universitário FEI - em que foram promovidas intervenções voltadas ao desenvolvimento do Propósito de Vida dos estudantes. Uma abordagem mista foi utilizada, pois se considerou importante não apenas compreender o processo de desenvolvimento do propósito (aspecto qualitativo), como mensurá-lo (aspecto quantitativo). Isso foi feito por meio de uma combinação de métodos, incluindo survey, experimento, intervenção e grupo focal. Como resultado da pesquisa tem-se: (1) identificou-se uma correlação entre o senso de propósito e a autoeficácia nas decisões de carreira dos estudantes, (2) foi construído um modelo teórico do desenvolvimento do propósito de vida, (3) foi proposto um método para seu desenvolvimento no Ensino Superior, (4) identificou-se que as intervenções contribuíram para o aumento no senso de propósito dos estudantes, (5) foram identificados fatores influenciadores no processo de desenvolvimento, (6) foi compreendido como o propósito se desenvolveu após as intervenções e (7) foram sugeridas maneiras de as Instituições de Ensino Superior de Administração promoverem o propósito de seus estudantes. Espera-se que esta pesquisa ofereça contribuições para o campo de desenvolvimento de propósito de jovens, bem como para o Ensino Superior de Administração. A person\'s life purpose is developed and modified throughout life, but it is during youth that one of its most important stages happens, as the process of personal identity formation occurs (Bronk, 2011; Erikson, 1976). Although studies in this field reveal several benefits of having a purpose - such as greater psychological, physical and social well-being, feelings of gratitude, empathy and hope, increased longevity, and reduced stress, anxiety and depression - few young people can identify their life purpose (Damon, 2008). Education is pointed as an important space to support young people in this process of purpose development (Damon, 2008; Koshy & Mariano, 2011; Malin, 2008). However, limited research has been devoted to how purpose is discovered or how it is pursued over time (Bronk, 2014, p. 91) and it is in this direction that this thesis aims to contribute. Thus, the research question of this study is \"how can students\' life purpose be developed during their higher education?\". The context of the research development was the Brazilian higher education in Business Management. Considering the diversity of career options that students have in this area, increasing clarity about their life purpose can help them make a coherent career choice. The research was conducted in two business schools - FEA/USP and Centro Universitário FEI - in which interventions aimed at the development of the student\'s life purpose were promoted. A Mixed Research Approach was used, as it was considered important not only to understand the purpose development process (qualitative aspect), but also to measure it (quantitative aspect). This was conducted through a combination of methods including survey, experiment, intervention and focus group. The research results were: (1) a correlation was identified between sense of purpose and student\'s career decision self-efficacy, (2) a theoretical model of life purpose development was built, (3) A method for its development in Higher Education was proposed, (4) it was identified that the interventions contributed to the increase in the students\' sense of purpose, (5) influencing factors of the development process were identified, (6) it was understood how purpose developed after the interventions and (7) were suggested ways for Institutions of Higher Education in Business Management to promote the purpose of their students. This research is expected to make contributions to the field of youth purpose development as well as to Higher Education in Business Management.

A temática medular do presente trabalho versa sobre a aprendizagem social e a participação na gestão do saneamento básico. Mais especificamente, o foco da pesquisa está no âmbito das questões relativas aos métodos utilizados para provocar o engajamento dos atores e os mecanismos de controle social atualmente empregados na gestão do saneamento básico nos municípios de Iperó e Mairinque, no estado de São Paulo. A metodologia de pesquisa aplicada nesta tese é o estudo de caso, devido às vivências no projeto Metodologias para fortalecimento do controle social na gestão em saneamento, desenvolvido com recursos do Programa de Pesquisa em Saúde e Saneamento da Fundação Nacional da Saúde (FUNASA), em convênio com o Instituto de Energia e Ambiente da Universidade de São Paulo (IEE/USP). O objetivo principal é identificar os principais saberes proporcionados pela aplicação dos instrumentos participativos utilizados nos processos de instalação do controle social na discussão da gestão do saneamento básico nesses municípios. Para tanto, busca-se examinar a complexidade das relações entre meio ambiente e sociedade de risco globalizada, o cenário do saneamento no Brasil e na região das bacias hidrográficas dos rios Sorocaba e Médio Tietê, a gestão do saneamento nos municípios de Iperó e Mairinque e os conceitos de aprendizagem social neste âmbito. De acordo com os diálogos entre os atores do poder público e a sociedade civil, fica evidente a importância da participação e do controle social nos processos de gestão do saneamento básico. Em particular, o Município de Mairinque demonstra engajamento para convergir aos dispostos da Lei 11.455/2007 do controle social no saneamento, no sentido da construção e do aperfeiçoamento dos mecanismos que possibilitam o envolvimento da população junto aos processos de gestão do saneamento básico. The core theme of this paper is the social learning process and participation in basic sanitation management. More specifically, the focus of the research is on the issues related to the methods used to provoke stakeholders engagement and the mechanisms of social control currently employed in the management of basic sanitation in the municipalities of Iperó and Mairinque, in the state of São Paulo. The research methodology applied in this thesis is the case study, due to experiences in the project \"Methodologies for strengthening social control in sanitation management\", developed with resources from the Health and Sanitation Research Program of the National Health Foundation (FUNASA), in partnership with the Institute of Energy and Environment of the University of São Paulo (IEE / USP). The main objective is to identify the major knowledge provided by the application of the participatory instruments used in the processes of installation of social control in the discussion of the management of basic sanitation in these municipalities. In order to do so, we seek to examine the complexity of the relationship between the environment and globalized risk society, the scenario of sanitation in Brazil and the region of the Sorocaba and Meio Tietê river basins, the management of sanitation in the municipalities of Iperó and Mairinque and the concepts of social learning in this field. According to the dialogues between the actors of public power and civil society, the importance of participation and social control in the processes of management of basic sanitation is evident. In particular, the Municipality of Mairinque demonstrates its commitment to converge to those, established by Law 11455/2007 of social control in sanitation, in the sense of building and perfecting the mechanisms that enable the population to be involved in basic sanitation management processes.

Para que as organizações possam lidar com os desafios da sustentabilidade, sua vinculação à estratégia mostra-se como um argumento comum, assim como se reconhece a demanda pelo desenvolvimento de competências organizacionais e humanas. Todavia, o conhecimento acerca da abordagem das competências como um lastro sustentador do alinhamento entre sustentabilidade e estratégia demanda robustez teórica e empírica. Diante da oportunidade de avanços no conhecimento, delineou-se o seguinte objetivo nesta pesquisa: analisar as inter-relações entre estratégia, competências organizacionais e humanas relacionadas à gestão da sustentabilidade nas organizações. A pesquisa, classificada como exploratória-descritiva, qualitativa, com análises temáticas de dados por meio do uso de software ATLAS t.i., consistiu de duas etapas. Na Etapa Teórica, fundamentou-se a ideia de que a adequada gestão da sustentabilidade está conectada a estratégia organizacional; discutiu-se a gestão estratégica da sustentabilidade e a pertinência da abordagem da gestão por competências, além de explorarem-se as competências organizacionais e humanas para tanto. Nesta etapa, desenvolveu-se ainda a proposta de um framework inicial representativo das inter-relações entre estratégia, competências organizacionais e humanas para a gestão da sustentabilidade. A Etapa Empírica, por sua vez, foi dividida em duas. Na Etapa Empírica I, a qual envolveu entrevistas junto a nove especialistas, os dados angariados acerca do referido framework evidenciaram a concordância geral dos entrevistados sobre a sua viabilidade teórica e empírica. Ademais, foram apreendidas algumas lições em forma de desafios para seu aprimoramento. A Etapa Empírica II consistiu na realização de dois estudos de caso instrumentais em organizações reconhecidas pela gestão da sustentabilidade e pela gestão por competências. As análises referentes aos casos permitiram inferir que há um contexto favorável para a concepção e operacionalização das ideias contidas no framework inicial. Todavia, pontos descobertos em termos conceituais e prováveis implicações operacionais foram observados. A partir da consolidação das Etapas Empíricas I e II, o framework foi revisitado, ajustado em uma proposta final e novas recomendações foram feitas para sua operacionalização. As evidências possibilitaram concluir que as inter-relações entre estratégia, competências organizacionais e humanas são não somente desejáveis, mas talvez fundamentais. A originalidade da pesquisa reside na inserção da abordagem das competências para a gestão estratégica da sustentabilidade, sob uma perspectiva holística. Além disso, a pesquisa apresenta avanços em relação à identificação das competências humanas para a sustentabilidade, com indicações para sua definição operacional e suas entregas, além de seu desenvolvimento e acompanhamento nas organizações. Quanto às implicações teóricas, são propiciadas novas perguntas e novos caminhos a serem aplicados em pesquisas concernentes à gestão da sustentabilidade, assim como novas perspectivas para a formação de futuros gestores. Quanto às implicações gerenciais, são disponibilizados às organizações subsídios para o desenvolvimento de padrões de monitoramento e acompanhamento das práticas de sustentabilidade, a partir das competências, o que deve proporcionar uma posição mais objetiva e distanciada de discursos vazios das em relação ao fenômeno. Reconhece-se que ainda são necessárias contribuições e avanços no conhecimento sobre o tema, portanto, são recomendadas investigações teóricas e empíricas para que se dê continuidade nas proposições elaboradas e nos insights emergentes da pesquisa. For organisations to address the challenges of sustainability, their relation to the strategy shows up as a common argument, as the demand for organisational and human competences development related to it. However, the knowledge concerning the competences approach as a sustaining link for the alignment between sustainability and strategy still demands theoretical and empirical efforts. Given the opportunity for knowledge advancements, the following general objective was defined for this research: to analyse the interrelationships amongst strategy, organisational and human competencies related to sustainability management in organisations. The research is classified as exploratory-descriptive, qualitative, and a thematic data analyses were aided by the ATLAS t.i. software. In the Theoretical Stage, it was founded the idea that an adequate sustainability management is connected to the organisational strategy; besides that, the strategic management of sustainability and the relevance of the competence-based approach were discussed, as well as the appropriated organisational and human competences were explored. In this stage, the proposal of an initial framework representing the interrelationships amongst strategy, organisational and human competences for sustainability management was developed. The Empirical Stage, in its turn, was divided in two phases. In Empirical Stage I, which involved interviews with nine experts, the data gathered about the framework evidenced the general agreement of the interviewees on its theoretical and empirical viability. Moreover, some challenges and lessons learned were gathered. The Empirical Stage II accomplished two instrumental case studies in organisations recognised by their sustainability and competence management. The analyses referring the case studies made it possible to infer that there is a favourable context for the conception and operationalisation of the initial ideas about the framework. However, conceptual breakthroughs and possible operational implications were also observed. Based on the consolidation of Empirical Steps I and II, the framework was revisited, adjusted in a final proposal and new recommendations were made for its operationalization. The evidences allowed concluding that the interrelationships amongst strategy, organisational and human competences are not only desirable but perhaps fundamental. The originality of this research resides in the insertion of the competences approach for sustainability strategic management, from a holistic perspective. In addition, the research advances in relation to the identification of human competences for sustainability, with indications for their operational definition and their deliveries, as well as their development and monitoring in organizations. About the theoretical implications, this research prompts new questions and new ways to be applied in studies concerning sustainability management, as well as new perspectives for future managers\' education. Regarding the managerial implications, organisations are provided with subsidies for the development of standards for monitoring and following up on sustainability practices based on competences, which should provide organizations a more objective and distanced position from empty discourses regarding the phenomenon. It is acknowledged, however, it is still needed contributions and advances in knowledge on the subject. Theoretical and empirical investigations are recommended to give continuity to the elaborated propositions and emerging insights from this research.

However, for this practice to happen, graduates need to be prepared to work within these expectations. In this sense and to understand if there are environmental performances in the Brazilian federal universities and their business students, this study was aimed to verify this relationship, using a scale translated and validated for the Brazilian context, based on belief, attitude, concern and consumption. The methodological approach is quantitative, allowing to analyze the environmental performance and which aspects have environmental practices. The survey data was performed using a questionnaire administered in 60 campuses of federal universities where, effectively, 35 of them participated, with a total of 1,146 respondents. Data were analyzed by Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), with partial least squares and paths models (PLS-PM) using the SmartPLS 2.0 software - M3, the results indicate that the development of environmental issues are not favorable in the academic world.
