Children from rural areas face numerous possibilities of neurodevelopmental conditions that may compromise their well-being and optimal development. Neuropsychology and electroencephalography (EEG) have shown strong agreement in detecting correlations between these two variables and suggest an association with specific environmental and social risk factors. The present scoping review aims to describe studies reporting associations between EEG features and cognitive impairment in children from rural or vulnerable environments and describe the main risk factors influencing EEG abnormalities in these children. The method for this purpose was based on a string-based review from PubMed, EBSCOhost, and Web of Science, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). Qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted from the outcomes that complied with the selected criteria. In total, 2280 records were identified; however, only 26 were eligible: 15 for qualitative and 11 for quantitative analysis. The findings highlight the significant literature on EEG and its relationship with cognitive impairment from studies in children with epilepsy and malnutrition. In general, there is evidence for the advantages of implementing EEG diagnosis and research techniques in children living under risk conditions. Specific associations between particular EEG features and cognitive impairment are described in the reviewed literature in children. We present the analytic forms of the principal Hugoniots of actinium (Ac) and the lanthanide promethium (Pm), which have both never been measured or calculated before, as well as those of terbium (Tb), thulium (Tm), and lutetium (Lu), the three least studied of the remaining lanthanides. They are based on our new analytic model of principal Hugoniot. A comparison of the five Hugoniots to our own independent theoretical calculations demonstrates very good agreement in every case, but each of the Hugoniots of Tb, Tm, and Ac from the TEFIS database, which ours are also compared to, appear to violate Johnson's theoretical constraint 4 < η max < 7 for the maximum compression ratio η max , which corresponds to the Hugoniot turnaround point. Agomelatine (AGM) is one of the latest atypical antidepressants, prescribed exclusively for the treatment of depression in adults. AGM belongs to the pharmaceutical class of melatonin agonist and selective serotonin antagonist ("MASS"), as it acts both as a selective agonist of melatonin receptors MT1 and MT2, and as a selective antagonist of 5-HT2C/5-HT2B receptors. AGM is involved in the resynchronization of interrupted circadian rhythms, with beneficial effects on sleep patterns, while antagonism on serotonin receptors increases the availability of norepinephrine and dopamine in the prefrontal cortex, with an antidepressant and nootropic effect. The use of AGM in the pediatric population is limited by the scarcity of data. In addition, few studies and case reports have been published on the use of AGM in patients with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Considering this evidence, the purpose of this review is to report the potential role of AGM in neurological developmental disorders. AGM would increase the expression of the cytoskeleton-associated protein (ARC) in the prefrontal cortex, with optimization of learning, long-term memory consolidation, and improved survival of neurons. Another important feature of AGM is the ability to modulate glutamatergic neurotransmission in regions associated with mood and cognition. With its synergistic activity a melatoninergic agonist and an antagonist of 5-HT2C, AGM acts as an antidepressant, psychostimulant, and promoter of neuronal plasticity, regulating cognitive symptoms, resynchronizing circadian rhythms in patients with autism, ADHD, anxiety, and depression. The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV‐1) is an intracellular pathogen whose replication cycle strictly depends on the host cell molecular machinery. HIV‐1 crosses twice the plasma membrane, to get in and to get out of the cell. Therefore, the first and the last line of intracellular component encountered by the virus is the cortical actin network. Here, we review the role of actin and actin‐related proteins in HIV‐1 entry, assembly, budding, and release. We first highlight the mechanisms controlling actin polymerization at the entry site that promote the clustering of HIV‐1 receptors, a crucial step for the virus to fuse with the plasma membrane. Then, we describe how actin is transiently depolymerized locally to allow the capsid to cross the actin cortex, before migrating towards the nucleus. Finally, we review the role of several actin‐binding proteins in actin remodeling events required for membrane deformation and curvature at the viral assembly site as well as for virus release. Strikingly, it appears that common actin‐regulating pathways are involved in viral entry and exit. However, while the role of actin remodeling during entry is well understood, this is not the case during exit. We discuss remaining challenges regarding the actin‐dependent mechanisms involved in HIV‐1 entry and exit, and how they could be overcome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), as a highly prevalent psychiatric symptom in adolescents and young adults, is defined as the deliberate destruction of body tissue without suicidal intent. Impulsivity and dysfunctional response inhibition have been suggested to play a central role in adolescents' vulnerability to self-harm. To investigate the potentially distinct neurobiology of NSSI, we used a well-established Go/No Go task in which activation of the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) is interpreted as a neural correlate of processing failed response inhibition. Task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging data were obtained from 14 adolescents with a diagnosis of major depression and a history of NSSI (MD-NSSI), 13 depressed adolescents without NSSI (MD-only), and 14 healthy controls (HC). In line with hypotheses of dysfunctional response inhibition, we observed increased rates of commission errors in MD-NSSI along with significantly reduced error-related activations of the dACC and IFG. Intact response inhibition, as reflected by low commission error rates not different from HC, was observed in MD-only, along with increased activation of the error-processing network. Our findings support the hypothesis of a distinct neurobiological signature of NSSI. Objective: Some studies have suggested alterations of structural brain asymmetry in attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but findings have been contradictory and based on small samples. Here, we performed the largest ever analysis of brain left‐right asymmetry in ADHD, using 39 datasets of the ENIGMA consortium. Methods: We analyzed asymmetry of subcortical and cerebral cortical structures in up to 1,933 people with ADHD and 1,829 unaffected controls. Asymmetry Indexes (AIs) were calculated per participant for each bilaterally paired measure, and linear mixed effects modeling was applied separately in children, adolescents, adults, and the total sample, to test exhaustively for potential associations of ADHD with structural brain asymmetries. Results: There was no evidence for altered caudate nucleus asymmetry in ADHD, in contrast to prior literature. In children, there was less rightward asymmetry of the total hemispheric surface area compared to controls (t = 2.1, p =.04). Lower rightward asymmetry of medial orbitofrontal cortex surface area in ADHD (t = 2.7, p =.01) was similar to a recent finding for autism spectrum disorder. There were also some differences in cortical thickness asymmetry across age groups. In adults with ADHD, globus pallidus asymmetry was altered compared to those without ADHD. However, all effects were small (Cohen's d from −0.18 to 0.18) and would not survive study‐wide correction for multiple testing. Conclusion: Prior studies of altered structural brain asymmetry in ADHD were likely underpowered to detect the small effects reported here. Summary We provide a software to describe the topology of large protein complexes based mainly on cryo-EM data and stored as macromolecular Crystallographic Information Files (mmCIFs) in the PDB. The software extends the Protein Topology Graph Library and implements an efficient file parser to analyze mmCIFs. The extended Protein Topology Graph Library includes a graph-based representation of the topology of protein complexes on the supersecondary and quaternary structure level. The library holds topology graphs of 151 837 PDB files; 921 of them are large structures. The abstraction of protein structure complexes to undirected labeled graphs enables classification and comparison of large protein complexes on quaternary structure level. Background Early detection of schizophrenia risk is a critical goal in the field. Endophenotypes in children to relatives of affected individuals may contribute to this early detection. One of the lowest cost and longest theorized domains is motor development in children. Methods A meta-analysis was conducted comparing individuals ≤21 years old with affected first-degree relatives (FDR) with (1) individuals from unaffected families (controls), or (2) individuals with FDR having other psychiatric disorders. Studies were classified by motor outcome and separate meta-analyses were performed across six correlated domains, with available N varying by domain. Results Inclusion criteria were met by k = 23 independent studies with a total N = 18,582, and N across domains varying from 167 to 8619. The youth from affected families had delays in gross and fine motor development in infancy ( k = 3, n = 167, Hedges'g = 0.644, confidence intervals (CI) = [0.328, 0.960], p < .001), walking milestones ( k = 3, n = 608, g = 0.444, CI = [0.108, 0.780], p = .01), coordination ( k = 8, n = 8619, g = 0.625, CI = [0.453, 0.797], p < .0001), and had more abnormal movements such as involuntary movements ( k = 6, n = 8365, g = 0.291, CI = [0.041, 0.542], p = .02) compared with controls. However, not all effects survived correction for publication bias. Effects for neurological soft signs were small and not reliably different from zero ( k = 4, n = 548, g = 0.238, CI = [−0.106, 0.583], p = .18). When comparing the FDR group to youth from families with other psychiatric disorders, the FDR group was distinguished by poorer gross and fine motor skills ( k = 2, n = 275, g = 0.847, CI = [0.393, 1.300], p < .001). Conclusions Motor deficits during development likely represent an endophenotype for schizophrenia, although its specificity is limited in relation to other serious mental disorders. It holds promise as a low cost domain for early risk detection, although it will have to be combined with other indicators to achieve clinically usable prediction accuracy. Studies suggest that the bidirectional relationship existent between the gut microbiome (GM) and the central nervous system (CNS), or so-called the microbiome–gut–brain axis (MGBA), is involved in diverse neuropsychiatric diseases in children and adults. In pediatric age, most studies have focused on patients with autism. However, evidence of the role played by the MGBA in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in childhood, is still scanty and heterogeneous. This review aims to provide the current evidence on the functioning of the MGBA in pediatric patients with ADHD and the specific role of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs) in this interaction, as well as the potential of the GM as a therapeutic target for ADHD. We will explore: (1) the diverse communication pathways between the GM and the CNS; (2) changes in the GM composition in children and adolescents with ADHD and association with ADHD pathophysiology; (3) influence of the GM on the ω-3 PUFA imbalance characteristically found in ADHD; (4) interaction between the GM and circadian rhythm regulation, as sleep disorders are frequently comorbid with ADHD; (5) finally, we will evaluate the most recent studies on the use of probiotics in pediatric patients with ADHD. Impairments in social communication (SC) represent one of the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While previous studies have demonstrated that exercise intervention improves SC in children with ASD, there is currently no neuroscientific evidence supporting its benefits. Therefore, we evaluated the outcomes of a long-term exercise intervention on SC and white matter integrity (WMI) in children with ASD, and further explored the neural mechanism of exercise intervention on SC in these children. Twenty-nine children aged 3–6 years with ASD were assigned to either exercise group (n = 15) or control group (n = 14). The exercise group received a scheduled mini-basketball training program (5 sessions per week, forty minutes per session) for 12 consecutive weeks, while the control group was instructed to maintain their daily activities. Groups were assessed before and after intervention on SC and WMI. SC scores were lower in the exercise group post-intervention. Compared with the control group, WMI of the exercise group showed higher fractional anisotropy in the body of corpus callosum, fornix, right cerebral peduncle, left posterior limb of internal capsule, right retrolenticular part of internal capsule, left anterior corona radiate and left superior fronto-occipital fasciculus; lower mean diffusivity in the left anterior corona radiate and the bilateral corticospinal tract. Furthermore, increased WMI was associated with lower scores on a measure of social cognition in the overall sample. Increasing scientific evidence demonstrated the deregulation of human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) expression in complex diseases, such as cancer, autoimmune, psychiatric, and neurological disorders. The dynamic regulation of HERV activity and their responsiveness to a variety of environmental stimuli designate HERVs as genetic elements that could be modulated by drugs. Methylphenidate (MPH) is widely used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The aim of this study was to evaluate the time course of human endogenous retrovirus H (HERV-H) expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) with respect to clinical response in ADHD patients undergoing MPH therapy. A fast reduction in HERV-H activity in ADHD patients undergoing MPH therapy was observed in parallel with an improvement in clinical symptoms. Moreover, when PBMCs from drug-naïve patients were cultured in vitro, HERV-H expression increased, while no changes in the expression levels were found in ADHD patients undergoing therapy. This suggests that MPH could affect the HERV-H activity and supports the hypothesis that high expression levels of HERV-H could be considered a distinctive trait of ADHD patients.
