Purpose: Arterial spin labeling (ASL) is a widely used contrast-free MRI method for assessing cerebral blood flow (CBF). Despite the generally adopted ASL acquisition guidelines, there is still wide variability in ASL analysis. We explored this variability through the ISMRM-OSIPI ASL-MRI Challenge, aiming to establish best practices for more reproducible ASL analysis., Methods: Eight teams analyzed the challenge data, which included a high-resolution T1-weighted anatomical image and 10 pseudo-continuous ASL datasets simulated using a digital reference object to generate ground-truth CBF values in normal and pathological states. We compared the accuracy of CBF quantification from each team's analysis to the ground truth across all voxels and within predefined brain regions. Reproducibility of CBF across analysis pipelines was assessed using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), limits of agreement (LOA), and replicability of generating similar CBF estimates from different processing approaches., Results: Absolute errors in CBF estimates compared to ground-truth synthetic data ranged from 18.36 to 48.12 mL/100 g/min. Realistic motion incorporated into three datasets produced the largest absolute error and variability between teams, with the least agreement (ICC and LOA) with ground-truth results. Fifty percent of the submissions were replicated, and one produced three times larger CBF errors (46.59 mL/100 g/min) compared to submitted results., Conclusions: Variability in CBF measurements, influenced by differences in image processing, especially to compensate for motion, highlights the significance of standardizing ASL analysis workflows. The effect of moisture content changes during drying processing on the appearance of sea buckthorn was studied. Using computer vision methods and various image processing methods to collect and analyze images during the drying process of sea buckthorn fruit. Sea buckthorn is dried in a drying oven at a temperature of 65 °C and Level 1 wind speed conditions. The images of the entire drying process of sea buckthorn fruit were collected at 30-min intervals. Deep mining and transformation of image information through various image processing methods. By calibrating and modeling the color components, real-time online detection of the moisture content of sea buckthorn fruit can be achieved. After modeling, this article attempted to use LSTM (Long Short Term Memory) to predict the appearance of sea buckthorn fruit with supercritical moisture content. Brown sugar is a natural sweetener obtained by thermal processing, with interesting nutritional characteristics. However, it has significant sensory variability, which directly affects product quality and consumer choice. Therefore, developing rapid methods for its quality control is desirable. This work proposes a fast, environmentally friendly, and accurate method for the simultaneous analysis of sucrose, reducing sugars, minerals and ICUMSA colour in brown sugar, using an innovative strategy that combines digital image processing acquired by smartphone cell with machine learning. Data extracted from the digital images, as well as experimentally determined contents of the physicochemical characteristics and elemental profile were the variables adopted for building predictive regression models by applying the kNN algorithm. The models achieved the highest predictive capacity for the Ca, ICUMSA colour, Fe and Zn, with coefficients of determination (R 2 ) ≥ 92.33 %. Lower R 2 values were observed for sucrose (81.16 %), reducing sugars (85.67 %), Mn (83.36 %) and Mg (86.97 %). Low data dispersion was found for all the predictive models generated (RMSE < 0.235). The AGREE Metric assessed the green profile and determined that the proposed approach is superior in relation to conventional methods because it avoids the use of solvents and toxic reagents, consumes minimal energy, produces no toxic waste, and is safer for analysts. The combination of digital image processing (DIP) and the kNN algorithm provides a fast, non-invasive and sustainable analytical approach. Time-lapse microscopy offers a powerful approach for analyzing cellular activity. In particular, this technique is valuable for assessing the behavior of bacterial populations, which can exhibit growth and intercellular interactions in a monolayer. Such time-lapse imaging typically generates large quantities of data, limiting the options for manual investigation. Several image-processing software packages have been developed to facilitate analysis. It can thus be a challenge to identify the software package best suited to a particular research goal. Here, we compare four software packages that support the analysis of 2D time-lapse images of cellular populations: CellProfiler, SuperSegger-Omnipose, DeLTA, and FAST. We compare their performance against benchmarked results on time-lapse observations of Escherichia coli populations. Performance varies across the packages, with each of the four outperforming the others in at least one aspect of the analysis. Not surprisingly, the packages that have been in development for longer showed the strongest performance. We found that deep learning-based approaches to object segmentation outperformed traditional approaches, but the opposite was true for frame-to-frame object tracking. We offer these comparisons, together with insight into usability, computational efficiency, and feature availability, as a guide to researchers seeking image-processing solutions., Importance: Time-lapse microscopy provides a detailed window into the world of bacterial behavior. However, the vast amount of data produced by these techniques is difficult to analyze manually. The study used the fractal dimension (FD), browning incidence, and grayscale values using machine vision to describe the bruise magnitude and quality of mechanically damaged 'Fard' bananas bruised from 20, 40, 60 cm drop heights by 66, 98, and 110 g ball weights conditioned at different storage temperatures (5, 13, 22 °C) after 48 h. Conventional analyses like bruise area (BA), bruise volume (BV), and bruise susceptibility (BS) were also conducted. A correlation was performed to determine the relationship between image processing and conventional assessment of bruise damage in bananas. Weight, firmness, color, sugar content, and acidity were investigated. The results demonstrated that bananas bruised from the highest force and stored at 5 and 22 °C reported the lowest FD with values of 1.7162 and 1.7403, respectively. Increasing the level of damage reduced the fractal dimension and grayscale values and increased browning incidence and bruise susceptibility values after 48 h of storage. The total color change values showed a strong Pearson's correlation coefficient (r≥-0.81) with image analysis fractal dimension and grayscale values. The findings also indicated that higher bruising and temperature can induce weight loss, firmness reduction, lightness, and yellowness increment, and sugar and acidity changes. Genomic sequences are traditionally represented as strings of characters: A (adenine), C (cytosine), G (guanine), and T (thymine). However, an alternative approach involves depicting sequence-related information through image representations, such as Chaos Game Representation (CGR) and read pileup images. With rapid advancements in deep learning (DL) methods within computer vision and natural language processing, there is growing interest in applying image-based DL methods to genomic sequence analysis. These methods involve encoding genomic information as images or integrating spatial information from images into the analytical process. In this review, we summarize three typical applications that use image processing with DL models for genome analysis. Cities are a major source of litter pollution. Determination of the abundance and composition of plastic litter in cities is imperative for effective pollution management, environmental protection, and sustainable urban development. Therefore, here, a multidisciplinary approach to quantify and classify the abundance of litter in urban environments is proposed. In the present study, litter data collection was integrated via the Pirika smartphone application and conducted image analysis based on deep learning. Pirika was launched in May 2018 and, to date, has collected approximately one million images. Visual classification revealed that the most common types of litter were cans, plastic bags, plastic bottles, cigarette butts, cigarette boxes, and sanitary masks, in that order. The top six categories accounted for approximately 80 % of the total, whereas the top three categories accounted for more than 60 % of the total imaged litter. A deep-learning image processing algorithm was developed to automatically identify the top six litter categories. Both precision and recall derived from the model were higher than 75 %, enabling proper litter categorization. The quantity of litter derived from automated image processing was also plotted on a map using location data acquired concurrently with the images by the smartphone application. The widespread use of IoT devices has led to the generation of a huge amount of data and driven the need for analytical solutions in many areas of human activities, such as the field of smart agriculture. Continuous monitoring of crop growth stages enables timely interventions, such as control of weeds and plant diseases, as well as pest control, ensuring optimal development. Decision-making systems in smart agriculture involve image analysis with the potential to increase productivity, efficiency and sustainability. By applying Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), state recognition and classification can be performed based on images from specific locations. Thus, we have developed a solution for early problem detection and resource management optimization. The main concept of the proposed solution relies on a direct connection between Cloud and Edge devices, which is achieved through Fog computing. The goal of our work is creation of a deep learning model for image classification that can be optimized and adapted for implementation on devices with limited hardware resources at the level of Fog computing. This could increase the importance of image processing in the reduction of agricultural operating costs and manual labor. As a result of the off-load data processing at Edge and Fog devices, the system responsiveness can be improved, the costs associated with data transmission and storage can be reduced, and the overall system reliability and security can be increased. The proposed solution can choose classification algorithms to find a trade-off between size and accuracy of the model optimized for devices with limited hardware resources. After testing our model for tomato disease classification compiled for execution on FPGA, it was found that the decrease in test accuracy is as small as 0.83% (from 96.29% to 95.46%).

Objective. Target volumes for radiotherapy are usually contoured manually, which can be time-consuming and prone to inter- and intra-observer variability. Automatic contouring by convolutional neural networks (CNN) can be fast and consistent but may produce unrealistic contours or miss relevant structures. We evaluate approaches for increasing the quality and assessing the uncertainty of CNN-generated contours of head and neck cancers with PET/CT as input. Approach. Two patient cohorts with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and baseline 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography and computed tomography images (FDG-PET/CT) were collected retrospectively from two centers. The union of manual contours of the gross primary tumor and involved nodes was used to train CNN models for generating automatic contours. The impact of image preprocessing, image augmentation, transfer learning and CNN complexity, architecture, and dimension (2D or 3D) on model performance and generalizability across centers was evaluated. A Monte Carlo dropout technique was used to quantify and visualize the uncertainty of the automatic contours. Main results . CNN models provided contours with good overlap with the manually contoured ground truth (median Dice Similarity Coefficient: 0.75-0.77), consistent with reported inter-observer variations and previous auto-contouring studies. Image augmentation and model dimension, rather than model complexity, architecture, or advanced image preprocessing, had the largest impact on model performance and cross-center generalizability. Transfer learning on a limited number of patients from a separate center increased model generalizability without decreasing model performance on the original training cohort. High model uncertainty was associated with false positive and false negative voxels as well as low Dice coefficients. Significance. High quality automatic contours can be obtained using deep learning architectures that are not overly complex. High-throughput imaging (HTI) generates complex imaging datasets from a large number of experimental perturbations. Commercial HTI software programs for image analysis workflows typically do not allow full customization and adoption of new image processing algorithms in the analysis modules. While open-source HTI analysis platforms provide individual modules in the workflow, like nuclei segmentation, spot detection, or cell tracking, they are often limited in integrating novel analysis modules or algorithms. Here, we introduce the High-Throughput Image Processing Software (HiTIPS) to expand the range and customization of existing HTI analysis capabilities. HiTIPS incorporates advanced image processing and machine learning algorithms for automated cell and nuclei segmentation, spot signal detection, nucleus tracking, nucleus registration, spot tracking, and quantification of spot signal intensity. Furthermore, HiTIPS features a graphical user interface that is open to integration of new analysis modules for existing analysis pipelines and to adding new analysis modules. To demonstrate the utility of HiTIPS, we present three examples of image analysis workflows for high-throughput DNA FISH, immunofluorescence (IF), and live-cell imaging of transcription in single cells. Altogether, we demonstrate that HiTIPS is a user-friendly, flexible, and open-source HTI software platform for a variety of cell biology applications., (© 2024. Functional magnetic resonance imaging in rodents holds great potential for advancing our understanding of brain networks. Unlike the human community, there remains no standardized resource in rodents for image processing, analysis and quality control, posing significant reproducibility limitations. Our software platform, Rodent Automated Bold Improvement of EPI Sequences, is a pipeline designed to address these limitations for preprocessing, quality control, and confound correction, along with best practices for reproducibility and transparency. We demonstrate the robustness of the preprocessing workflow by validating performance across multiple acquisition sites and both mouse and rat data. Building upon a thorough investigation into data quality metrics across acquisition sites, we introduce guidelines for the quality control of network analysis and offer recommendations for addressing issues. Taken together, this software platform will allow the emerging community to adopt reproducible practices and foster progress in translational neuroscience., (© 2024. The Author(s).)
