Ni-based single-crystal superalloys are normally prepared by directional solidification. Due to different solidification sequences, Ni-based single-crystal superalloys exhibit a typical dendritic arm structure, and the element segregation in the dendritic arm can affect the high temperature mechanical properties of the alloy. Solid solution treatment has a certain extent to reduce the inter-dendritic and dendritic arm between the concentrations of the elements, thereby changing the alloy micro-nano view parameters to improve the high temperature mechanical properties of the alloy. In this study, nanoindentation experiments were carried out on the inter-dendritic and dendritic arm of the cast and solid solution samples. The micromechanical parameters were calculated. The amounts of changes in elemental concentration were discussed with the results of the energy dispersive spectroscopy and electron probe microanalysis, so as to analyse the relationship between the micromechanical parameters and the changes in elemental concentration. The results show that solid solution treatment has a significant impact on the elastic modulus, with an increase of 114.7% of the inter-dendritic region and an increase of 142.7% of the dendritic arm. However, solid solution treatment has little effect on the hardness, with no significant change in the hardness of the inter-dendritic region and an increase of 43.86% of the dendritic arm. Solid solution treatment has a more significant effect on improving the segregation behavior of Al and Co elements, with the segregation coefficients of Al and Co elements in the inter-dendritic region decreasing and increasing by 36% and 19%, and the segregation coefficients of Al and Co elements in the dendritic arm region decreasing and increasing by 29% and 34%.

Cryogenic electric machines (CEMs) offer significant potential for highly power-dense and ultra-efficient net-zero aircraft. Aluminum (Al) displays superior conductivity to copper (Cu) at cryo-temperatures, making Al Litz wires an attractive option for CEM windings to minimize DC and eddy losses. However, accurately quantifying Al Litz wire losses remains challenging, particularly considering their unknown electromagnetic behavior at different cryo-temperatures and frequencies when embedded in iron cores. To address this, a specialized test setup was developed to measure the losses of two customized Al Litz coils, alongside a Cu Litz coil, under varying cryo-temperatures (25 to 77 K) and frequencies (50 to 1000 Hz). A numerical model was also developed using COMSOL, incorporating a temperature-dependent electrical conductivity and a homogenization model for Litz wires with rectangular cross-sections. The model was incorporated into an analytic design procedure to maximize the test-rig loss ratio within the tight space and maximum heat rejection constraints of the cryostat, to allow accurate loss separation. The experimental data aligns closely with the numerical simulations, enabling a comprehensive analysis of the loss characteristics of Al Litz wires. This study provides a detailed design methodology and serves as a valuable resource for developing CEMs for zero-emission electric aircraft.

Abstract Background Camellia sasanqua Thunb. is an essential woody ornamental plant. Our continuous observation found that scale insects often infest C. sasanqua all year round in Kunming, China, resulting in poor growth. Scientifically preventing and controlling the infestation of scale insects should be paid attention to, and the mechanism of scale insects influencing C. sasanqua should be used as the research basis. Results The scale insect was identified as Pseudaulacaspis sasakawai Takagi. We analyzed transcriptome sequencing data from leaves of C. sasanqua infested with scale insects. A total of 1320 genes were either up-regulated or down-regulated and differed significantly in response to scale insects. GO (Gene Ontology) annotation analysis showed that the pathway of catalytic activity, binding, membrane part, cell part, and cellular process were affected. KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) pathway analysis showed that most DEGs (differentially expressed genes) involved in plant hormone signal transduction, MAPK signaling pathway, flavonoid biosynthesis, tropane, piperidine and pyridine alkaloid biosynthesis. We also observed that the expression of galactose metabolism and carotenoid biosynthesis were significantly influenced. In addition, qRT-PCR (quantitative real-time PCR) validated the expression patterns of DEGs, which showed an excellent agreement with the transcriptome sequencing. Conclusions Our transcriptomic analysis revealed that the C. sasanqua had an intricate resistance strategy to cope with scale insect attacks. After sensing the attack signal of scale insects, C. sasanqua activated the early signal MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) to activate further transcription factors and Auxin, ET, JA, ABA, and other plant hormone signaling pathways, ultimately leading to the accumulation of lignin, scopolin, flavonoids and other secondary metabolites, produces direct and indirect resistance to scale insects. Our results suggested that it provided some potential resources of defense genes that would benefit the following resistance breeding in C. sasanqua to scale insects.

The COVID-19 lockdown had a significant impact on human activities, reducing anthropogenic heat and CO2 emissions. To effectively assess the impact of the lockdown on the thermal environment, we used the sliding paired t-test, which we improved from the traditional sliding t-test by introducing the paired t-test for sliding statistical tests, to test the abrupt change in the thermal environment. Furthermore, an additive decomposition model and wavelet analysis method were used to analyze the characteristics of trend and irregular change, coherence, and phase difference of the time series data with respect to the thermal environment. We chose the Greenland Sea and the Norwegian Sea, regions highly sensitive to changes in climate and ocean circulation, as case studies and used remote sensing data of the sea surface temperature (SST) and the atmospheric CO2 concentration data obtained from the Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center from January 2015 to December 2021 for the analysis. The results show that although the annual spatial mean SST in 2020 is lower than the mean of all 7 years in most areas of the two seas, there is no evidence of a significant mutation in the decrease in the SST during the lockdown in 2020 compared with the temperatures before, according to the sliding paired t-test. The analysis of the irregular components of the monthly mean SST decomposed by an additive decomposition model also does not show the anomalously low SST during the lockdown in 2020. In addition, the lockdown had almost no impact on the increasing trend of CO2 concentration. The wavelet analysis also shows that there is no obvious anomaly in coherence or phase difference between the periodic variation of the SST and the CO2 concentrations in 2020 compared with other years. These results suggest that the direct effect of the COVID-19 lockdown on the thermal environment of the study area could be negligible.

Summary: Oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) differentiate into myelin-producing cells and modulate neuronal activity. Defects in OPC development are associated with neurological diseases. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) contributes to neural development; however, the mechanism by which m6A regulates OPC development remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that PRRC2B is an m6A reader that regulates OPC development and myelination. Nestin-Cre-mediated Prrc2b deletion affects neural stem cell self-renewal and glial differentiation. Moreover, the oligodendroglia lineage-specific deletion of Prrc2b reduces the numbers of OPCs and oligodendrocytes, causing hypomyelination and impaired motor coordination. Integrative methylated RNA immunoprecipitation sequencing, RNA sequencing, and RNA immunoprecipitation sequencing analyses identify Sox2 as the target of PRRC2B. Notably, PRRC2B, displaying separate and cooperative functions with PRRC2A, stabilizes mRNA by binding to m6A motifs in the coding sequence and 3′ UTR of Sox2. In summary, we identify the posttranscriptional regulation of PRRC2B in OPC development, extending the understanding of PRRC2 family proteins and providing a therapeutic target for myelin-related disorders.

Existing research suggested 300∼600 μm as the optimal pore size range for metallic bone implants. The human bones, however, have numerous pores smaller than 300 μm for bone ingrowth, cell growth and migration, fluid flow, and so forth. The bone implant with such small-sized pores has been rarely manufactured and its property is unclear. In the paper, biodegradable Fe scaffolds of different pore sizes (50 μm, 100 μm, 150 μm, 200 μm, and 300 μm) were fabricated by direct ink writing (DIW) with subsequent sintering. The interconnected pores of all scaffolds are highly precise and have no residual powders. The in-vitro degradation and compression tests were conducted on the scaffolds to evaluate the effect of pore size on degradation and mechanical behaviors, respectively. The results indicate that a decrease in pore size leads to an increase in degradation rate, from 0.0423 ± 0.0014 to 0.0433 ± 0.0035 mm/year, with the exception of the 50 μm scaffolds which exhibit the lowest value of 0.0052 ± 0.0018 mm/year due to clogging by degradation products; meanwhile, both elastic modulus and yield strength rise from 344.8 ± 18.6 MPa to 625.0 ± 52.5 MPa and from 9.5 ± 0.9 MPa to 15.1 ± 0.8 MPa, respectively. The pore size of 100 μm shows the most significant potential for use in Fe bone implants regarding its good degradation and mechanical behaviors. Our work provides new insight into the preferable pore size of metallic bone implants produced by additive manufacturing.

Abstract To achieve sustainable heritage conservation, preventive conservation has gradually taken precedence over curative conservation, because it can inhibit the damage caused by various environmental factors and maximizes the preservation life of the artifacts. Due to susceptibility to environmental factors, preventive conservation has been used in the conservation of movable wooden artifacts to further protect them. Recently, digital twin technology, as a concept that transcends reality, can be mapped in virtual space to reflect the full lifecycle process of the corresponding entity, which is a superior characteristic that makes it valued and researched for health monitoring and health management of heritages. This paper proposes a health management method mainly for preventive conservation of movable wooden artifacts, integrating digital twin technology into the health management process. Using the Quanzhou Ship as a typical representative, several important components of health management are specifically analyzed, such as the five-dimensional model of the digital twin, the data interaction process of the digital twin, and the identification and assessment of risks. In particular, the process of preventive conservation of the stern based on the digital twin is presented in detail. This method provides a basis for future preventive conservation of movable wooden artifacts and has implications for the use of digital twin technology in the field of heritage conservation, especially for movable wooden artifacts.

Abstract Unstructured tetrahedral grids have been applied in magnetotelluric (MT) forward modeling using the finite element (FE) method because of their adaptability to complex anomalies. However, high-quality results require an extreme refinement of the near-surface area, which leads to excessive meshes and an increased degree of freedom (DoF) of the governing equation of the finite element system. To reduce the computational cost, we have developed a hybrid mesh based on triangular prisms and tetrahedrons. The required elements in the near-surface area are reduced because the quality of the triangular prism is not limited by the element aspect ratio. The deep area is discretized by tetrahedral elements to ensure the flexibility of the unstructured grids. The superiority of this hybrid mesh has been tested on a layered model, the DTM1 model and terrain relief models. The results show that the modeling efficiency has been improved, especially for high-frequency data. The accuracy of the modeling using the hybrid mesh is significantly higher than that of the tetrahedral mesh with a similar DoF. Usage of the hybrid mesh can be easily adapted to complex geoelectric models with strong terrain fluctuations, which requires less computational cost than using conventional unstructured elements.

Flavanone 3-hydroxylase (F3H) catalyzes trihydroxyflavanone formation into dihydroflavonols in the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway, serving as precursors for anthocyanin synthesis. To investigate the CsF3Ha promoter’s regulation in the ‘Zijuan’ tea plant, we cloned the CsF3Ha gene from this plant. It was up-regulated under various visible light conditions (blue, red, and ultraviolet (UV)) and using plant growth regulators (PGRs), including abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellic acid (GA3), salicylic acid (SA), ethephon, and methyl jasmonate (MeJA). The 1691 bp promoter sequence was cloned. The full-length promoter P1 (1691 bp) and its two deletion derivatives, P2 (890 bp) and P3 (467 bp), were fused with the β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene, and were introduced into tobacco via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. GUS staining, activity analysis, and relative expression showed that visible light and PGRs responded to promoter fragments. The anthocyanin content analysis revealed a significant increase due to visible light and PGRs. These findings suggest that diverse treatments indirectly enhance anthocyanin accumulation in ‘Zijuan’ tea plant leaves, establishing a foundation for further research on CsF3Ha promoter activity and its regulatory role in anthocyanin accumulation.

Islands, as an important land part of China, are independent geographical unit with special property. It is of great significance for exploitation and protection of islands that give them a correct classification evaluation. In this study, 30 islands were chosen with 16 different factors include environment protection, economic and social development to realize the classification of them. Meanwhile the relationship between different factors that can give a direction of developing islands was explored. The study showed that the islands could be classified by economic developing islands, environment developing islands and traditional islands. The economic development had a strong correlation to the social development and the environment had a weak correlation to the social development. The economic development had very few correlation to the environment. Through the islands classification and evaluation, on the one hand the current situation of islands could be deeply discovered, on the other hand the relationship between the exploitation and protection of islands could be grasped in a better field.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to investigate whether dietary supplementation with benzoic acid, Enterococcus faecium, and essential oil complex (BEC) could help laying hens recover from coccidia and Clostridium perfringens type A challenge. A total of 60 (35-wk-old) Lohmann-laying hens were randomly assigned to 3 experimental groups (10 replicates with 2 hens per replicate): I) control group (CON), II) challenge group (CC), and III) BEC group (2,000 mg/kg BEC). The total experimental period was 8 wk. The results shown that the challenge layers had lower egg-laying rate and average daily feed intake (ADFI) (P < 0.05), and addition of BEC after challenge increased egg-laying rate (P < 0.05). The content of propionic acid (PA) and butyric acid (BA) in short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) was significantly decreased by challenge (P < 0.05). CC and BEC groups had lower villus height to crypt depth ratio (V/C) and higher pathological scores in duodenum (P < 0.05), whereas the BEC group had lower pathological scores in jejunum when compared with the CC group (P < 0.05). The challenge increased the concentration of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and IL-6) (P < 0.05). An increase in the abundance of Bacteroidoes (genus), Bacteroidaceae (family), Bacteroidoes sp. Marseille P3166 (species), Bacteroidoes caecicola (species) was observed in the CC group, whereas the BEC group had higher abundance of Bacteroides caecigallinarum (species). The genera Faecalibacterium and Asterolplasma were positively correlated with egg-laying rate (r = 0.57, 0.60; P < 0.01); and the genera Bacteroides and Romboutsia were negatively correlated with egg-laying rate (r = −0.58, −0.74; P < 0.01). The genera Bacteroides, Lactobacillus, and Rombutzia were positively correlated with jejunal mucosa proinflammatory factor IL-1β level (r = 0.61, 0.60, 0.59; P < 0.01), which were negatively correlated with genera Rikenbacteriaceae RC9, Faecalibacterium, and Olsenlla (r = −0.56, −0.57, −0.61; P < 0.01). There genera UCG.005 was positively correlated with proinflammatory factor IL-6 level in jejunal mucosa (r = 0.58; P < 0.01), which was negatively correlated with Rikenbacteriaceae RC9 (r = −0.62; P < 0.01). The experiment results revealed that the addition of BEC to the diet restored the production performance of the laying hens. In addition, supplementation of 2,000 mg/kg BEC modulated gut health by reducing gut damage scores and modulating microbial composition, thereby promoting recovery of laying hens after coccidia and Clostridium perfringens challenge.

Background and Purpose The association of dyslipidemia with stroke has been inconsistent, which may be due to differing associations within etiological stroke subtypes. We sought to determine the association of lipoproteins and apolipoproteins within stroke subtypes. Methods Standardized incident case-control STROKE study in 32 countries. Cases were patients with acute hospitalized first stroke, and matched by age, sex and site to controls. Concentrations of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein A1 (apoA1), and apoB were measured. Non-HDL-C was calculated. We estimated multivariable odds ratio (OR) and population attributable risk percentage (PAR%). Outcome measures were all stroke, ischemic stroke (and subtypes), and intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Results Our analysis included 11,898 matched case-control pairs; 77.3% with ischemic stroke and 22.7% with ICH. Increasing apoB (OR, 1.10; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.06 to 1.14 per standard deviation [SD]) and LDL-C (OR, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.10 per SD) were associated with an increase in risk of ischemic stroke, but a reduced risk of ICH. Increased apoB was significantly associated with large vessel stroke (PAR 13.4%; 95% CI, 5.6 to 28.4) and stroke of undetermined cause. Higher HDL-C (OR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.72 to 0.78 per SD) and apoA1 (OR, 0.63; 95% CI, 0.61 to 0.66 per SD) were associated with ischemic stroke (and subtypes). While increasing HDL-C was associated with an increased risk of ICH (OR, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.14 to 1.27 per SD), apoA1 was associated with a reduced risk (OR, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.75 to 0.85 per SD). The porosity and degradation rate are critical properties of biodegradable bone implants, as they facilitate the regeneration of bone tissues and ensure a gradual load transfer. Herein, porous iron-hydroxyapatite (Fe-HA) metal-matrix composites (MMCs) with independently adjustable porosity and degradation rate are fabricated through a 3D printing technique, i.e., direct ink writing (DIW). HA micro powders exhibit a significant acceleration effect on the degradation rate, which act as a variable that is independent of the porosity to regulate the degradation rate. The mass losses of Fe-HA MMCs with the porosities of 30%, 50%, and 70% after 21d in-vitro immersion increased by 26%, 38%, and 93%, respectively, with the rising of HA content from 0 to 7.5 wt%. The novel porous Fe-HA MMCs have an adjustable and wide porosity-degradation rate range, yielding great potential to match with varied porosity and regeneration rate among various bones of different people.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this experiment is to explore the effects of dietary supplementation of benzoic acid, Enterococcus faecium, and essential oil complex (BEC) on coccidia and Clostridium perfringens challenge in laying hens. A total of 80 Lohmann gray laying hens (35 wk old) were allocated to 4 treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with the main effects of Clostridium perfringens type A (CP) and coccidia challenge (with or without challenge) and 2 BEC levels (0 and 1,000 mg/kg). The total experimental period was 6 wk. The results showed that: the challenge group significantly decreased the laying rate and average daily feed intake (ADFI) of laying hens (PChallenge < 0.01). The BEC + challenge group significantly increased the laying rate and decreased the feed conversion ratio (FCR) of laying hens (PBEC < 0.05). The challenge significantly decreased the thickness, strength, and relative weight of eggshell (PChallenge < 0.05). The BCE + challenge group significantly increased the relative weight and strength of the eggshell (P BEC < 0.05). The challenge significantly increased the crypt depth of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum, and decreased the villus-to-crypt ratio (V/C) (PChallenge < 0.01). The BEC + challenge group decreased the crypt depth of the duodenum and jejunum, and increased the V/C of the duodenum (PBEC < 0.01). The pathological scores of duodenum and jejunum of the challenge group were significantly higher than other groups (PChallenge < 0.01), while the BEC + challenge group had lower pathological scores of jejunum (PBEC < 0.01). The challenge significantly decreased the mRNA expression of Occludin, Mucin-2, Zonula occluden-1 (ZO-1) (P challenge < 0.05); whereas the BEC group significantly increased the expression of Occludin, Mucin-2, and Claudin-1 mRNA (P BEC < 0.05). The challenge significantly increased the level of interleukin 1β (IL-1β) in the jejunum (PChallenge < 0.05). Taken together, adding BEC to the diet can improved production performance and egg quality of layers, by protecting intestinal health against Clostridium perfringens type A (CP) and coccidia challenge.

The interface plays an important role in determining strength and toughness in multiphase systems and the accurate measurement of the interface structure in single crystal (SX) Ni-based superalloy is also essential. In this work, the γ and γ′ lattice constant, γ/γ′ interface width at dendritic and interdendritic region of casting and solution treatment SX Ni-based superalloy is measured. Various advanced equipment is used to characterize γ/γ′ interface nanostructure. A typical correlation between interface width and γ/γ′ misfit is also summarized. The interface width in the dendritic region of the as-cast sample is larger than that in the interdendritic region. The misfit in the dendritic region is larger than that in the interdendritic region, which has a trend of negative development. There is a common law of the as-cast interdendritic and dendrite interface sample, where the absolute value of the misfit between the two phases is increasing with the phase interface broadening. The comparison of the as-cast and heat-treated interdendritic sample shows that after heat treatment, the phase interface width increases, the misfit decreases, the lattice constant of γ phase increases, and the lattice constant of the γ′ phase decreases. By comparing the as-cast and heat treated dendrites, the absolute value of the misfit of the as-cast dendrite sample is significantly smaller than that of the heat-treated sample, and the misfit increases with the interface broadening. The comparison between interdendritic and dendritic heat-treated samples shows that the absolute value of the misfit between the two phases is smaller than that of the dendritic as-cast samples, and the absolute value of the misfit also increases with the phase interface broadening. In conclusion, property heat treatment can significantly increase the lattice constants of the γ and γ’ phases, reduce the lattice mismatch at the interface of the two phases, and improve the high temperature stability of the alloy. A better understanding of the microstructure of Ni-based single crystal superalloys will provide guidance for the subsequent design of more advanced nickel-based single-crystal superalloys.

Abstract Transnasal humidified rapid insufflation ventilator exchange (THRIVE) may be effective in delaying hypoxia, but the efficacy of THRIVE for oxygenation in elderly patients under general anaesthesia has not been assessed. This study assessed whether THRIVE prolonged the apnoea time in the elderly patients after induction. This was a single centre, two-group, randomized controlled trial. 60 patients (65 to 80 years of age) with American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grades I ~ III who required tracheal intubation or the application of a laryngeal mask under general anaesthesia were randomly allocated to receive oxygenation using THRIVE (100% oxygen, 30~70 litres min−1) or a facemask (100% oxygen, 10 litres min−1) during the pre-oxygenation period and during apnoea. The apnoea time, which was defined as the time from the cessation of spontaneous breathing until the SpO2 decreased to 90% or the apnoea time reached 10 minutes was recorded as the primary outcome. Previous studies have shown that switching operations of gas insulated substations (GIS) can generate transient radiation fields outside the enclosure, namely switching transient electric fields (STEF). The waveform features of STEF can reflect the functioning performance of the switch. To monitor online the working states of disconnecting switches (DS), in this paper, we built an experimental platform to simulate their typical faulty types. Then, under different faulty status, a non-invasive three-dimensional (3D) electric field measurement system was applied to obtain STEF produced by DS. It is difficult for conventional methods to establish an accurate fault-diagnosis model, so we presented a novel method to identify the condition of DS. This innovative approach is based on feature extraction and machine learning and combined signal analysis to classify different defect types of DS. Measured STEF signals were analyzed by the wavelet packet transform(WPT) method in the time-frequency domain, which was transformed to the multi-dimensional feature matrix. The principal component analysis (PCA) algorithm was employed to reduce the dimensionality of the obtained feature matrix, which was also compared to other feature extraction algorithms. In addition, a support vector machine (SVM) with an improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm was designed to achieve a PCA-IPSO-SVM model which can be used for signal recognition. The proposed IPSO technique can improve the convergence performance of the PSO through the dynamic adjustment of inertia weight and learning factors. Results show that the proposed fault diagnosis method based on WPT and PCA-IPSO-SVM can effectively identify the insulation faulty signals in STEF.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this experiment was to investigate the influence of dietary tributyrin on reproduction performance and ovary function of broiler breeders with different egg laying rate. Two hundred fifty-six AA broiler breeders (48-wk-old) were allocated to 4 treatment in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with the main effects of tributyrin supplementation (0 and 1,000 mg/kg tributyrin [TRI]) and 2 egg laying rate levels (average [AR, 81.01 ± 0.79%] and low [LR, 70.98 ± 0.95%]). The results shown that the LR breeders presented higher egg weight, but lower egg laying rate, qualified egg rate and feed efficiency than the AR breeders (P(laying) < 0.05). Also, the superoxidase dismutase (SOD) activity in magnum was lower while malondialdehyde (MDA) was higher in ovary and magnum of LR breeders than that in the AR breeders (P(laying) < 0.05). Dietary supplementation with tributyrin significantly enhanced egg weight (P(TRI) < 0.05), increased albumen height as well as Haugh unit (HU) in AR breeders (P(interaction) < 0.05), and also had higher total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and lower MDA in ovary (P(TRI) < 0.05). The cell apoptosis rate and proapoptosis related gene expression (caspase 8, 9 and Bax) in the ovary of LR breeders was higher, while anti-apoptosis related gene (Bcl-2) expression were lower in LR breeders when compared with the AR breeders (P(laying) < 0.05). Dietary supplementation with tributyrin decreased the cell apoptosis rate and downregulated caspase 9 expression in LR breeders (P(Interaction) < 0.05), up-regulated the Bcl-2 expression in both 2 breeders (P(TRI) < 0.05). These findings suggest that the breeders with lower egg laying rate also characterized by deteriorate ovary function indicated by lower antioxidant capacity and higher cell apoptosis rate. Dietary supplementation with tributyrin increased egg albumen quality, decreased ovarian proapoptosis related gene expression to improve reproductive tract function; and the positive effect on egg albumen quality is more pronounced in average reproductive breeders.

Thermal barrier coating (TBC) materials play important roles in gas turbine engines to protect the Ni-based superalloys from high-temperature airflow damage. In this work, the nano-mechanism of TBC failure is analyzed. A scanning transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometer (STEM-EDS)-based analysis method was used to study the influence of element migration on the deformation behavior of the bond–coat (BC) layer during heating. The content of elements in the same region varied greatly at different temperatures, which could prove the contribution of element migration to the deformation of the BC layer. TEM in-situ heating experiments were designed and carried out to study the deformation behavior near the ceramic topcoat (TC)/thermally grown oxide (TGO) and the TGO/BC interface. The TC/TGO interface was deformed violently during heating, and obvious deformation occurred at 100 °C, while the TGO/BC interface was relatively stable. A subset geometric phase analysis method was used for full field-strain measurement. The strain value near the TGO/BC interface was relatively small and did not change significantly at lower temperatures. The TC/TGO interface is more unstable and easier to deform than the TGO/BC interface. The stress and strain evolution in the internal region of TGO at high temperatures was quantitatively analyzed. The TGO layer has a tensile stress of GPa magnitude along the interface direction at the peak position, and the shear stress is small.

The single-crystal Ni-based superalloys, which have excellent mechanical properties at high temperatures, are commonly used for turbine blades in a variety of aero engines and industrial gas turbines. Focusing on the phase interface of a second-generation single-crystal Ni-based superalloy, in-situ TEM observation was conducted at room temperature and high temperatures. Intensity ratio analysis was conducted for the measurement of two-phase interface width. The improved geometric phase analysis method, where the adaptive mask selection method is introduced, was used for the measurement of the strain field near the phase interface. The strained irregular transition region is consistent with the calculated interface width using intensity ratio analysis. An intensity ratio analysis and strain measurement near the interface can corroborate and complement each other, contributing to the interface structure evaluation. Using TEM in-situ heating and Fourier transform, the change of dislocation density in the γ phase near the two-phase interface of the single-crystal Ni-based superalloy was analyzed. The dislocation density decreases first with the increase in temperature, consistent with the characteristics of metal quenching, and increases sharply at 450 °C. The correlation between the variation of dislocation density at high temperatures and the intermediate temperature brittleness was also investigated.

The tree peony (Paeonia ostii ‘Feng Dan Bai’) has excellent drought tolerance. Although it has already been reported that the cuticle is an essential barrier against drought stress, the critical genes for cuticle resistance to drought remain unclear. However, the long-chain acyl-CoA synthetases (LACS) family of genes may be significant for the synthesis of cuticle wax. To test whether the LACS gene family is involved in cuticle response to drought stress in tree peony, we measure the thickness of cuticle stems and leaves alongside LACS enzyme activity. It is found that the cuticle thickens and the LACS enzyme increases with the maturation of stems and leaves, and there is a positive correlation between them. The LACS enzyme increases within 12 h under drought stress induced by polyethylene glycol (PEG). The transcriptome sequencing result (BioProject accession number PRJNA317164) is searched for, and a LACS gene with high expression is cloned. This gene has high homology and similarity with LACS4 from Arabidopsis thaliana. The gene is named PoLACS4. It is show to be highly expressed in mature leaves and peaks within 1 h under drought and salt stresses. All these results suggest that the LACS family of genes may be involved in cuticle response to drought stress and that PoLACS4 is a crucial gene which responds rapidly to drought in the tree peony.

The development of superconducting technology has seen continuously increasing interest, especially in the area of clean power systems and electrification of transport with low CO2 emission. Electric machines, as the major producer and consumer of the global electrical energy, have played a critical role in achieving zero carbon emission. The superior current carrying capacity of superconductors with zero DC loss opens the way to the next-generation electric machines characterized by much higher efficiency and power density compared to conventional machines. The persistent current mode is the optimal working condition for a superconducting magnet, and thus the energization of superconducting field windings has become a crucial challenge to be tackled, to which high temperature superconducting (HTS) flux pumps have been proposed as a promising solution. An HTS flux pump enables current injection into a closed superconducting coil wirelessly and provides continuous compensation to offset current decay, avoiding excessive cryogenic losses and sophisticated power electronics facilities. Despite many publications regarding the design and analyses of various types of HTS flux pumps, the practical application of HTS flux pumps in a high-performance superconducting machine has been rarely reported. Therefore, it is of significance to specify the main challenges for building and implementing a reliable HTS flux pump. In addition, the physical mechanisms of distinct HTS flux pumps have caused some confusion, which should be clarified. Above all, a systematic review of the recent development and progress of HTS flux pumps remains lacking. Given the above-mentioned issues, this paper summarized the most up-to-date advances of this emerging technology, clarified the working mechanisms and commonly adopted modeling approaches, presented objective analyses of the applicability of various HTS flux pumps, specified the primary challenges for implementing HTS flux pumps, and proposed useful suggestions to improve this wireless excitation technology. The overall aim of this work is to bring a deep insight into the understanding of HTS flux pumps and provide comprehensive guidance for their future research and applications.

ABSTRACT: The insulation effect of ceramic coating in a turbine blade is of great importance for the service of engine in the field of aviation industry. Fabricating microstructure in the thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) is considered to be able to enhance the thermal insulation effect. In this study, the traditional three-layer structure, containing ceramic top coat, bonding coat and substrate, is firstly simplified into a double-layer structure, where only ceramic layer and substrate are left, for analyzing the thermal insulation. Afterwards, the thermal insulation effect of the designed microstructure in the bonding coat of the three-layer structure is further studied. Column-like microstructures, filled with hollow ceramic microspheres in the interspace, are designed to improve the thermal insulation effect. The size parameters of the designed microstructure were optimized. The existence of the designed microstructure can significantly prolong the efficiency of thermal barrier coatings. The insulation temperature between the heating surface and lower surface of the substrate can exceed 300°C and the thermal balance time has a big improvement of 240 s, more than 50%, than the traditional TBCs structure. Compared with the TBCs structure without microstructure, the designed microstructure can significantly improve the insulation temperature of more than 110°C. Superconductor technology has recently attracted increasing attention in power-generation- and electrical-propulsion-related domains, as it provides a solution to the limited power density seen by the core component, electrical machines. Superconducting machines, characterized by both high power density and high efficiency, can effectively reduce the size and mass compared to conventional machine designs. This opens the way to large-scale purely electrical applications, e.g., all-electrical aircrafts. The alternating current (AC) loss of superconductors caused by time-varying transport currents or magnetic fields (or both) has impaired the efficiency and reliability of superconducting machines, bringing severe challenges to the cryogenic systems, too. Although much research has been conducted in terms of the qualitative and quantitative analysis of AC loss and its reduction methods, AC loss remains a crucial problem for the design of highly efficient superconducting machines, especially for those operating at high speeds for future aviation. Given that a critical review on the research advancement regarding the AC loss of superconductors has not been reported during the last dozen years, especially combined with electrical machines, this paper aims to clarify its research status and provide a useful reference for researchers working on superconducting machines. The adopted superconducting materials, analytical formulae, modelling methods, measurement approaches, as well as reduction techniques for AC loss of low-temperature superconductors (LTSs) and high-temperature superconductors (HTSs) in both low- and high-frequency fields have been systematically analyzed and summarized. Based on the authors’ previous research on the AC loss characteristics of HTS coated conductors (CCs), stacks, and coils at high frequencies, the challenges for the existing AC loss quantification methods have been elucidated, and multiple suggestions with respect to the AC loss reduction in superconducting machines have been put forward. This article systematically reviews the qualitative and quantitative analysis methods of AC loss as well as its reduction techniques in superconductors applied to electrical machines for the first time. It is believed to help deepen the understanding of AC loss and deliver a helpful guideline for the future development of superconducting machines and applied superconductivity.

Background This study investigated whether a novel multi-injection intertransverse process block could provide non-inferior analgesia and recovery quality following major breast cancer surgery compared with the multi-injection thoracic paravertebral block. Methods Eighty-eight females who underwent mastectomy plus sentinel or axillary lymph node dissection were randomized to receive either intertransverse process block or thoracic paravertebral block, both performed at T2-6 with 5 mL of 0.5% ropivacaine per level. The primary outcome was the worst resting pain score (11-point Numerical Rating Scale) within 30 min in the recovery room. The secondary outcome was recovery quality (15-item quality of recovery scale) 24 hours after surgery, which was tested following a gatekeeping procedure. Results The worst resting pain scores were 0 (0, 1) in the intertransverse process block group vs 0.5 (0, 2) in the thoracic paravertebral block group, with a median difference of 0 (95% CI 0 to 0); the upper 95% CI limit was lower than the prespecified non-inferiority margin of 1 point (non-inferiority p<0.001). Aggregate scores of recovery quality at 24 hours postoperatively were 137.5 (126.5, 142.8) and 137.5 (127.8, 145.0) for the intertransverse process and thoracic paravertebral block groups, respectively, with a median difference of -1 (95% CI -6 to 3); the lower 95% CI limit was larger than the prespecified non-inferiority margin of -8 (non-inferiority p=0.006). Conclusions Compared with a multi-injection thoracic paravertebral block, the multi-injection intertransverse process block provided non-inferior analgesia within 30 min in the recovery room and recovery quality at 24 hours following major breast cancer surgery in females.
