Assured Destruction: Building the Ballistic Missile Culture of the U.S. Air Force documents the rapid development of nuclear ballistic missiles in the United States and their equally swift demise after the Cuban Missile Crisis, revealing how these drastic changes negatively influenced both the Air Force and the missile community. David W. Bath contends that the struggle to create and control nuclear ballistic missiles threatened both the dominance of the United States during an intensifying Cold War and the strategic airpower mission of the newly created Air Force. The book details the strenuous efforts required to create and prepare a missile arsenal before the Cuban Missile Crisis, which occurred only five years after the first missile was declared operational. It uses the personal recollections of former missileers and the professional military education theses they wrote to highlight some of the concerns that have faced the missileers who operated and worked on these powerful weapons from 1957 to the present. The highlight of the book, however, is the personal stories of the missileers who served during the missile crisis, revealing the efforts that they went to in order to prepare these unique and untried weapons for what many thought might become the third world war.

That churches are one of the most important cornerstones of black political organization is a commonplace. In this history of African American Protestantism and American politics at the end of the Civil War, Nicole Myers Turner challenges the idea of black churches as having always been politically engaged. Using local archives, church and convention minutes, and innovative Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping, Turner reveals how freedpeople in Virginia adapted strategies for pursuing the freedom of their souls to worship as they saw fit—and to participate in society completely in the evolving landscape of emancipation. Freedpeople, for both evangelical and electoral reasons, were well aware of the significance of the physical territory they occupied, and they sought to organize the geographies that they could in favor of their religious and political agendas at the outset of Reconstruction. As emancipation included opportunities to purchase properties, establish black families, and reconfigure gender roles, the ministry became predominantly male, a development that affected not only discourses around family life but also the political project of crafting, defining, and teaching freedom. After freedmen obtained the right to vote, an array of black-controlled institutions increasingly became centers for political organizing on the basis of networks that mirrored those established earlier by church associations. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia during the 1864 Overland Campaign. Vathjes Arbeit stellt eine grundlegende theoretisch und empirisch fundierte Herausforderung an diese herkömmliche Auffassung des Geldangebotsprozesses dar. Das geldpolitische Konzept der Bundesbank einer indirekten Steuerung der Geldmenge über die Refinanzierungszinsen wird als Preisstrategie im Reservegeldmarkt modelliert. Zu dem von ihr fixierten Refinanzierungszins akkommodiert die Bundesbank die Geldnachfrage der Geschäftsbanken. Ein Modell der gewinnmaximierenden Geschäftsbank wird entwickelt, um den Einfluß der Refinanzierungszinsen auf die Depositengeldschaffung der Geschäftsbanken zu analysieren. Konsistent mit der Preisstrategie der Bundesbank im Reservegeldmarkt geht nicht die Reservegeldmenge, sondern lediglich der Refinanzierungszins in das Optimierungskalkül der repräsentativen Geschäftsbank ein. Die Analyse zeigt, daß der quantitative Anker für die volkswirtschaftliche Geldmenge bei einer Preisstrategie nicht das Reservegeldvolumen, sondern das Bankkreditvolumen ist. Die quantitative Wirksamkeit des geldpolitischen Instrumentariums hängt von der Zinselastizität der Kreditnachfrage, der Zinselastizität der Depositennachfrage und der Steuerbarkeit des langfristigen Marktzinsniveaus und der Zinsstruktur durch die Bundesbank ab. Umfangreiche empirische Analysen für Deutschland ergeben nachfolgend, daß die Zinselastizitäten zwar langfristig die theoretisch zu erwartenden negativen Vorzeichen hinsichtlich der relevanten Zinsen aufweisen, kurzfristig aber von erheblichen Wirkungsverzögerungen auszugehen ist. Die geringen Werte der ermittelten Koeffizienten zeigen ferner an, daß für spürbare geldpolitische Kontrolleinflüsse auf die Geldmenge Zinsänderungen in erheblichem Umfang erforderlich wären. Da ein statistisch signifikanter Einfluß der Refinanzierungszinsen aber nur auf die Zinsstruktur, nicht jedoch auf das langfristige Marktzinsniveau nachweisbar ist, ergeben sich erhebliche Zweifel an der Fähigkeit der Bundesbank, über ein Preisregime die Geldmenge zu steuern.
