Abstract

This paper summarises the design of the Cool-Chic candidate for the Challenge on Learned Image Compression. This candidate attempts to demonstrate that neural coding methods can lead to low complexity and lightweight image decoders while still offering competitive performance. 2. Low-Consumption Partial Transcoding by HEVC

Abstract

A transcoding scheme for the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is proposed that allows any partial frame modification to be followed by a partial re-compression of only the modified areas, while guaranteeing identical reconstruction of non-modified areas. To this end, first, syntax elements of all Coding Units (CU) in the frame are parsed and decoded according to their scan order. Then CUs that are collocated with a replaced area are re-encoded with new content to generate a partial set of new syntax elements. In order to avoid spatial propagation of the decoding mismatch due to the new content, CUs on the border of the replaced area are losslessly coded such that reconstruction of immediately neighboring CUs in the scan order are protected from the modification. The proposed method has been implemented on top of the HEVC test Model (HM) in All-Intra (AI) coding configuration and experiments show that, depending on the test parameters, it can offer both a bitrate saving (up to 4% in terms of BD-BR) and a transcoding acceleration (up to 83%) compared to a full transcoding scheme.

3. Low-complexity Overfitted Neural Image Codec

Abstract

We propose a neural image codec at reduced complexity which overfits the decoder parameters to each input image. While autoencoders perform up to a million multiplications per decoded pixel, the proposed approach only requires 2300 multiplications per pixel. Albeit low-complexity, the method rivals autoencoder performance and surpasses HEVC performance under various coding conditions. Additional lightweight modules and an improved training process provide a 14% rate reduction with respect to previous overfitted codecs, while offering a similar complexity. 4. Learn how to Prune Pixels for Multi-view Neural Image-based Synthesis

Abstract

Image-based rendering techniques stand at the core of an immersive experience for the user, as they generate novel views given a set of multiple input images. Since they have shown good performance in terms of objective and subjective quality, the research community devotes great effort to their improvement. However, the large volume of data necessary to render at the receiver's side hinders applications in limited bandwidth environments or prevents their employment in real-time applications. We present LeHoPP, a method for input pixel pruning, where we examine the importance of each input pixel concerning the rendered view, and we avoid the use of irrelevant pixels. Even without retraining the image-based rendering network, our approach shows a good trade-off between synthesis quality and pixel rate. When tested in the general neural rendering framework, compared to other pruning baselines, LeHoPP gains between $0.9$ dB and $3.6$ dB on average.

5. An inductive model structure for strict $\infty$-categories

Abstract

We construct a left semi-model category of ``marked strict $\infty$-categories'' for which the fibrant objects are those whose marked arrows satisfy natural closure properties and are weakly invertible. The canonical model structure on strict $\infty$-categories can be recovered as a left Bousfield localization of this model structure. We show that an appropriate extension of the Street nerve to the marked setting produces a Quillen adjunction between our model category and the Verity model structure for complicial sets, generalizing previous results by the second named author. Finally, we use this model structure to study, in the setting of strict $\infty$-categories, the idea that there are several non-equivalent notions of weak $(\infty,\infty)$-categories - depending on what tower of $(\infty,n)$-categories is used. 6. COOL-CHIC: Coordinate-based Low Complexity Hierarchical Image Codec

Abstract

We introduce COOL-CHIC, a Coordinate-based Low Complexity Hierarchical Image Codec. It is a learned alternative to autoencoders with 629 parameters and 680 multiplications per decoded pixel. COOL-CHIC offers compression performance close to modern conventional MPEG codecs such as HEVC and is competitive with popular autoencoder-based systems. This method is inspired by Coordinate-based Neural Representations, where an image is represented as a learned function which maps pixel coordinates to RGB values. The parameters of the mapping function are then sent using entropy coding. At the receiver side, the compressed image is obtained by evaluating the mapping function for all pixel coordinates. 7. Intra Prediction Using In-Loop Residual Coding for the post-HEVC Standard

Abstract

A few years after standardization of the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), now the Joint Video Exploration Team (JVET) group is exploring post-HEVC video compression technologies. In the intra prediction domain, this effort has resulted in an algorithm with 67 internal modes, new filters and tools which significantly improve HEVC. However, the improved algorithm still suffers from the long distance prediction inaccuracy problem. In this paper, we propose an In-Loop Residual coding Intra Prediction (ILR-IP) algorithm which utilizes inner-block reconstructed pixels as references to reduce the distance from predicted pixels. This is done by using the ILR signal for partially reconstructing each pixel, right after its prediction and before its block-level out-loop residual calculation. The ILR signal is decided in the rate-distortion sense, by a brute-force search on a QP-dependent finite codebook that is known to the decoder. Abstract

International audience; The MPEG Immersive Video (MIV) standard enables a novel technology denoted as decoder side depth estimation (DSDE) by introducing a dedicated Geometry Absent profile. In DSDE only texture information is coded and the corresponding geometry is reconstructed on the decoder side. MIV further enables the coding of side-information useful to the geometry reconstruction, denoted as Geometry Assistance SEI message. An emerging format for immersive video are Multiplane Images, which is investigated for feasibility in coding systems due to their promising rendering quality with complex sequences. In this work, we show that MIV can be used to construct block-based Multiplane Images on the decoder-side and to enhance the view synthesis performance utilizing the Geometry Assistance SEI. In a complexity-aware setting using only 32 planes, up to 6 dB of quality improvement is achieved compared to the reference.

Abstract

International audience; Decoder-Side Depth Estimation (DSDE) is a system firstly enabled in the novel MPEG Immersive Video (MIV) coding standard. In DSDE, only texture components are coded, while the depth is estimated at the decoder-side. This is motivated by previous work, which has shown high coding gain and pixel rate savings in DSDE. However, the computational complexity remains a concern, as high quality depth search has a high runtime and memory requirement. In this work we extend the concept of depth estimation to depth recovery. Using this mode, the decoder-side depth information is recovered through motion compensation utilizing the displacement vectors contained in the texture bitstream. This strategy enables us to replace most of the complex depth estimation processes with a simple motion compensation step, a decision that is drawn on the encoder-side and signaled per coding unit. With only minor losses in terms of synthesis PSNR and similar perceptual quality in terms of MS-SSIM, the complexity is significantly reduced. Depending on the acceptable loss, up to 80% of the moving objects depth may be motion compensated instead of estimated by a depth estimator translating into a speed-up of a factor of 104 for inter-frames compared to the reference depth estimator.

17. Growth Performance, Gonadal Weight and Fecundity: A Comparative Study of Rastrineobola argetea and Roasted Soybean Meal as Protein Ingredients for Brood Stock African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) in Uganda

Abstract

Rastrineobola argetea (fishmeal) was compared to roasted soybean meal as protein ingredients for brood stock African cat fish (Clarias gariepinus) in March 2019 on Geossy farm, Uganda. The fish were observed for growth and reproductive indices. Brood stocks of average weight 327 g were fed on different feeds for a month. Feed A contained soybeans as the sole main protein source. Feed B contained fishmeal as the sole protein source. Feed C was the control (usual farm feeds). Growth indices of B were significantly higher than of A (p = 0.0001, P < 0.05). It is implausible to substitute fishmeal 100% by soybean meal even with heat treatment to remove ant nutritional factors. Fish meal has essential amino acids and fatty acids that are not in soybeans, soybeans can best be used in combination with fishmeal but the most economical ratios need more research. The reproductive indices had no significant differences for feed A, B and control. Replacing fish meal with soybeans had no significant effect on the reproductive indices. Fish meal increases the growth indices and the gonadal weight of Clarias gariepinus, soybean meal is good during brood stock management because it increases fecundity although lighter eggs are observed.

21. Trawling for the unknown: An investigation of the impacts of harvest and oceanic warming on the life-histories of fish

Abstract

Fishing is globally important as humans rely on fish for 17% of their total protein intake and millions of people are directly or indirectly dependent on fisheries as a source of income. Fisheries harvests do, however, impose a number of impacts on fish populations. Harvest can cause demographic truncation (loss of large and old individuals), as well as reducing the reproductive capacity of populations and modify ecological interactions. Furthermore, fishing is inherently size-selective, where the preferential catch of certain phenotypes using different gears can combine with relatively high rates of fishing mortality to drive potentially rapid evolutionary responses in populations (called fisheries induced evolution or ‘FIE’). As a result of fishing, many harvested stocks are expressing a faster ‘pace-of-life’, characterised by faster growth, earlier maturation, and increased relative reproductive investment. Concurrent to fishing activity, the world’s oceans are warming at unprecedented rates which is having significant impact on the physical environment experienced by fish. Importantly, warming is thought to drive a similar increase in the pace-of-life expressed by fish via direct physiological and indirect temperature-dependent processes. This can be seen in almost ubiquitous shifts to faster growth, earlier maturity and smaller adult size, a phenomenon called the temperature size rule (TSR). Warming is also impacting fish populations through factors such as increased mortality, range shifts and increased incidence of hypoxic conditions. Our understanding of how the effects of harvest and warming may combine to impact on fishes, and influence their subsequent recovery after initial impact, is poor. An improved understanding of the combined impacts of fishing and warming oceans and the mechanisms underpinning these, as well as heuristic, cost effective ‘monitoring’ tools are needed if we are to properly manage fish stocks into the future. 26. Stoßinduzierte Wirbel in der Axialverdichterauslegung

In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird der Einfluss stoßinduzierter Wirbel in der Axialverdichterauslegung diskutiert, indem zunächst geometrische Einflussfaktoren an vereinfachten Schnittsimulationen variiert werden. Ein Ergebnis ist, dass in einer transsonischen Verdichterkonfiguration weder ein großer noch ein geringer Axialabstand zu bevorzugen ist. Die stoßinduzierten Wirbel sind der dominierende instationäre Effekt in transsonischen Verdichtern. Die Wirbel reduzieren oder erhöhen lokal die Geschwindigkeit und beeinflussen so die Hauptströmung und den Rotoranströmwinkel. Eine empirische Korrelationsfunktion zur Wirbeltrajektionsprognose wird analysiert und deren Vorhersagegenauigkeit verbessert. Die Parameterstudien können genutzt werden, um den optimalen Axialabstand im Auslegungsprozess besser zu bestimmen. Im letzten Teil wird gezeigt, dass die Ergebnisse aus den vereinfachten Schnittsimulationen auf reale dreidimensionale Geometrien übertragbar sind. The present work discusses shock induced vortices in a transonic compressor design. The inlet guide vane wake is affected by the shock due to the pressure gradient that curves the wake. To quantify the influence of these vortices, simplified parameter studies have been carried out in a quasi three dimensional setting. Neither a wide nor a small axial gapping is the most favorable in these kinds of compressors due to the vortices. They affect the total pressure ratio, the performance and the surge margin. They reduce or increase the local velocities that affect the rotor boundary layer and the incidence angle. An existing function that predicts the vortex trajectory (B3 function) has been adapted to increase the accuracy. The function uses a steady state simulation to predict the unsteady vortex trajectory. The last part of this work shows three dimensional vortices in the full scale front stage.

Abstract

The High Efficiency Video Coding standard (HEVC) supports a total of 35 intra prediction modes which aim at reducing spatial redundancy by exploiting pixel correlation within a local neighborhood. In this paper, we show that spatial correlation remains after intra prediction, leading to high energy prediction residues. We propose a novel scheme for encoding the prediction residues using a Mode Dependent Vector Quantization (MDVQ) which aims at reducing the redundancy in residual domain. The MDVQ codebook is optimized in a rate-distortion (RD) sense. Experimental results show that the codebook can be independent of the quantization parameter (QP) with no loss in terms of coding efficiency. A bitrate reduction of 1.1% on average compared to HEVC can be achieved, while further tests indicate that codebook adaptivity could substantially improve the performance., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)
