This study was conducted on Klasztorne Małe Lake located in the city of Kartuzy. For about 100 years, the lake served as a receiver of domestic, industrial, and rain sewage. The lake was completely degraded. In addition, excessive sewage inflow caused the accumulation of dense pollution in the area of the lake's deepest part, which caused the formation of a monimolimnion layer. The bradymictic KML became a meromictic lake. After cutting off the inflow of pollutants, the lake was restored by the P inactivation method using coagulants PIX 111 and PAX 18. Before the restoration process of this lake, concentrations of nutrients in the bottom water layers achieved very high values of TN (total N) 65 mg/L and TP (total P) 30 mg/L. An average concentration of chlorophyll was 65 µg/L and visibility did not exceed 1 m. The method used brought very good results. In the entire volume of water, over 90% reduction in TP and a several-fold decrease in the content of TN were noted. The withdrawal of mineral P from the water limited the production processes in the lake, which was reflected in the reduction in chlorophyll amounts (19 µg/L) and the increase in water visibility (2 m). In addition, oxygen conditions in the lake improved. The application of coagulants caused a decrease in the density of the monimolimnion water, which was indicated by a significant decrease in water conductivity. This study investigated the distribution of sedimentary phosphorus (P) species along an area of a rapid current at the southern coast of Zhoushan Island. The objective of this study was to improve the understanding of P cycling in a zone of rapid water cycling. Results showed that the average percentage of each P form to total P (TP) was in the following order: apatite P (Ca-P; 52%) was found in the most abundant, followed by organic P (OP; 16%), exchangeable-P (Ex-P; 14%), detrital P (De-P; 11%), and iron-bound P (Fe-P; 7%). Ca-P showed a trend of an increasing concentration from a location at the west (ZS1 has mean Ca-P = 45.6 mg kg−1) toward the east (ZS2 has mean Ca-P = 82.69 mg kg−1) and south-east (ZS3 has mean Ca-P = 82.17 mg kg−1); De-P also increased from 15.12 mg kg−1 at ZS1 to 22.53 mg kg−1 at ZS2 and 27.45 mg kg−1 at ZS3, but the three bioavailable P species, OP, Ex-P, and Fe-P, decreased from the west toward the east of the coastal area. Results along the cores showed the occurrences of sediment P adsorption and release throughout the time span from the 1930s to the present, with an overall trend of decreasing Ca-P and TP from the bottom to surface sediments. There was a tendency of Ca-P formation at the expense of Ex-P and OP release during transport and organic matter decomposition. The limited availability of molecularly targeted low‐molecular‐weight imaging agents for monitoring multiple myeloma (MM)‐targeted therapies has been a significant challenge in the field. In response, a first‐in‐class peptide‐based radiotracer, [68Ga]Ga‐AJ206, is developed that can be seamlessly integrated into the standard clinical workflow and is specifically designed to noninvasively quantify CD38 levels and pharmacodynamics by positron emission tomography (PET). A bicyclic peptide, AJ206, is synthesized and exhibits high affinity to CD38 (KD: 19.1 ± 0.99 × 10−9m) by surface plasmon resonance. Further, [68Ga]Ga‐AJ206‐PET shows high contrast within 60 min and suitable absorbed dose estimates for clinical use. Additionally, [68Ga]Ga‐AJ206 detects CD38 expression in cell line‐derived xenografts, patient‐derived xenografts (PDXs), and disseminated disease models in a manner consistent with flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry findings. Moreover, [68Ga]Ga‐AJ206‐PET successfully quantifies CD38 pharmacodynamics in PDXs, revealing increased CD38 expression in the tumor following all‐trans retinoic acid (ATRA) therapy. In conclusion, [68Ga]Ga‐AJ206 exhibits the salient features required for clinical translation, providing CD38‐specific high‐contrast images in multiple models of MM. [68Ga]Ga‐AJ206‐PET could be useful for quantifying total CD38 levels and pharmacodynamics during therapy to evaluate approved and new therapies in MM and other diseases with CD38 involvement. Feeds based on small (trash) fish contain much persistent phosphorus (P), such as Ca bound (Ca-P) and refractory P (Ref-P), which accumulates in high concentrations in the bottom sediments immediately below fish farms using this type of feed. This study designated three sampling locations based on their history concerning yellowtail fish farming (current, formerly or never) to investigate the sediment vertical distribution of phosphorus fractions and to test for detection of P impact on the bottom sediment. The aquaculture-free site was relatively low in Ca-P and Ref-P compared with continuous and previous aquaculture sites. The latter had high Ca-P and Ref-P content only in the depth range 17–29 cm, coinciding with the period during which aquaculture was conducted (1960–1998). Global warming has become indisputable in recent years; however, the mechanisms by which water vapor, radiation, and greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide contribute to driving global warming remain unclear, and it is becoming increasingly important to clarify their respective effects on temperature warming. In this study, we used the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) datasets and National Oceanic and the Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML) data to investigate the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of global warming and its driving mechanisms. The effects of water vapor, radiation (net longwave radiation), and CO2 on temperature rise are quantified from the perspective of the coupled land–atmosphere system, and water vapor is characterized in terms of the vapor pressure deficit (difference between saturated and actual water vapor pressures) to explicitly characterize its impact on the global water–heat cycle. The results show the following: (1) Under significant global warming, the vapor pressure deficit (VPD) exhibits an increasing trend, which is attributed to the rate of increase in actual water vapor being relatively slower than saturated water vapor. (2) Compared with the significant positive contribution of water vapor to global warming, CO2 is not, as generally expected, the most critical greenhouse gas causing global warming. (3) Water vapor and net longwave radiation (NLR) have significant mutual feedbacks on global warming. (4) A remarkable complementary mechanism of global warming that involves water vapor and NLR was identified, whereby the increased saturated water vapor induced by the rising temperature dominates the decrease in NLR. The results from this study have important theoretical value by enabling a more complete understanding of the contribution of VPD to global climate change and shedding light on the large-scale water vapor–climate change mutual feedback mechanism through research. This review uses the National Cancer Institute (NCI) COMPARE program to establish an extensive list of heterocyclic iminoquinones and quinones with similarities in differential growth inhibition patterns across the 60-cell line panel of the NCI Developmental Therapeutics Program (DTP). Many natural products and synthetic analogues are revealed as potential NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) substrates, through correlations to dipyridoimidazo[5,4-f]benzimidazoleiminoquinone (DPIQ), and as potential thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) inhibitors, through correlations to benzo[1,2,4]triazin-7-ones and pleurotin. The strong correlation to NQO1 infers the enzyme has a major influence on the amount of the active compound with benzo[e]perimidines, phenoxazinones, benz[f]pyrido[1,2-a]indole-6,11-quinones, seriniquinones, kalasinamide, indolequinones, and furano[2,3-b]naphthoquinones, hypothesised as prodrugs. Compounds with very strong correlations to known TrxR inhibitors had inverse correlations to the expression of both reductase enzymes, NQO1 and TrxR, including naphtho[2,3-b][1,4]oxazepane-6,11-diones, benzo[a]carbazole-1,4-diones, pyranonaphthoquinones (including kalafungin, nanaomycin A, and analogues of griseusin A), and discorhabdin C. Quinoline-5,8-dione scaffolds based on streptonigrin and lavendamycin can correlate to either reductase. Inhibitors of TrxR are not necessarily (imino)quinones, e.g., parthenolides, while oxidising moieties are essential for correlations to NQO1, as with the mitosenes. The horizontal distributions of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) in the surface sediments where complex aquaculture is conducted in Shido Bay, Seto Inland Sea, Japan, were determined to investigate the impact of fish and oyster farming. We also determined five fractions of phosphorus in the surface sediments. Relatively high phosphorus contents (P/C ratios) were observed in fish farming areas, likely due to the waste feed and fecal matter. Moreover, relatively high abundances of the Ca-bound P (Ca-P) and detrital P (Ref-P) fractions were observed in fish farming areas, likely due to bones of small fish used as feed. Our results strongly suggest that the P/C ratio and the Ca-P and Ref-P fractions in the surface sediments are good indicators of the effects of fish farming and allow its characterization, and are particularly valuable in the area of complex aquaculture. Arylamine N-acetyltransferase 2 has been related to drug side effects and cancer susceptibility; its protein structure and acetylation capacity results from the polymorphism's arrays on the NAT2 gene. Absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, cornerstones of the pharmacological effects, have shown diversity patterns across populations, ethnic groups, and even interethnic variation. Although the 1000 Genomes Project database has portrayed the global diversity of the NAT2 polymorphisms, several populations and ethnicities remain underrepresented, limiting the comprehensive picture of its variation. The NAT2 clinical entails require a detailed landscape of its striking diversity. This systematic review spans the genetic and acetylation patterns from 164 articles from October 1992 to October 2020. Descriptive studies and controls from observational studies expanded the NAT2 diversity landscape. Our study included 243 different populations and 101 ethnic minorities, and, for the first time, we presented the global patterns in the Middle Eastern populations. Europeans, including its derived populations, and East Asians have been the most studied genetic backgrounds. Contrary to the popular perception, Africans, Latinos and Native Americans have been significantly represented in recent years. NAT2*4, *5B, and *6A were the most frequent haplotypes globally. Nonetheless, the distribution of *5B and *7B were less and more frequent in Asians, respectively. Regarding the acetylator status, East Asians and Native Americans harboured the highest frequencies of the fast phenotype, followed by South Europeans. Central Asia, the Middle East, and West European populations were the major carriers of the slow acetylator status. The detailed panorama presented herein, expands the knowledge about the diversity patterns to genetic and acetylation levels. These data could help clarify the controversial findings between acetylator states and the susceptibility to diseases and reinforce the utility of NAT2 in precision medicine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several proteins are involved in cholesterol homeostasis, as scavenger receptor class B type I and ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters including ABCA1, ABCG1, ABCG5, and ABCG8. This study aimed to determine the effects of single nucleotide variants (SNVs) rs2275543 (ABCA1), rs1893590 (ABCG1), rs6720173 (ABCG5), rs6544718 (ABCG8), and rs5888 (SCARB1) on plasma lipids, lipoproteins, and adiposity markers in an asymptomatic population and its sex-specific effects. Volunteers (n = 590) were selected and plasma lipids, lipoproteins, and adiposity markers (waist-to-hip and waist-to-height ratios, lipid accumulation product and body adiposity index) were measured. Genomic DNA was isolated from peripheral blood cells according to the method adapted from Gross-Bellard. SNVs were detected in the TaqMan® OpenArray® Real-Time polymerase chain reaction platform and data analyses were performed using the TaqMan® Genotyper Software. The rs2275543*C point to an increase of high-density lipoprotein size in females while in males very-low-density lipoprotein, cholesterol, and triglycerides were statistically lower (P value < 0.05). The rs1893590*C was statistically associated with lower apolipoprotein A-I levels and higher activities of paraoxonase-1 and cholesteryl ester transfer protein (P value < 0.05). The rs6720173 was statistically associated with an increase in cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in males; moreover, rs6544718*T reduced adiposity markers in females (P value < 0.05). Regarding the rs5888, a decreased adiposity marker in the total population and in females occurred (P value < 0.05). Multivariate analysis of variance showed that SNVs could influence components of high-density lipoprotein metabolism, mainly through ABCG1 (P value < 0.05). The ABCA1 and ABCG5 variants showed sex-specific effects on lipids and lipoproteins, while SCARB1 and ABCG8 variants might influence adiposity markers in females. Background: We determined the frequency of genetic polymorphisms in three anti‐TB drug metabolic proteins previously reported: N‐acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2), cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), and arylacetamide deacetylase (AADAC) within a Peruvian population in a cohort of TB patients. Methods: We genotyped SNPs rs1041983, rs1801280, rs1799929, rs1799930, rs1208, and rs1799931 for NAT2; rs3813867 and rs2031920 for CYP2E1; and rs1803155 for AADAC in 395 participants completed their antituberculosis treatment. Results: Seventy‐four percent of the participants are carriers of slow metabolizer genotypes: NAT2*5, NAT2*6, and NAT2*7, which increase the sensitivity of INH at low doses and increase the risk of drug‐induced liver injuries. Sixty‐four percent are homozygous for the wild‐type CYP2E1*1A allele, which could increase the risk of hepatotoxicity. However, 16% had a NAT2 fast metabolizer phenotype which could increase the risk of acquiring resistance to INH, thereby increasing the risk of multidrug‐resistant (MDR) or treatment failure. The frequency of rs1803155 (AADAC*2 allele) was higher (99.9%) in Peruvians than in European American, African American, Japanese, and Korean populations. Conclusions: This high prevalence of slow metabolizers for isoniazid in the Peruvian population should be further studied and considered to help individualize drug regimens, especially in countries with a great genetic diversity like Peru. The treatment method to deactivate viable microorganisms from objects or products is termed sterilization. There are multiple forms of sterilization, each intended to be applied for a specific target, which depends on—but not limited to—the thermal, physical, and chemical stability of that target. Herein, an overview on the currently used sterilization processes in the global market is provided. Different sterilization techniques are grouped under a category that describes the method of treatment: radiation (gamma, electron beam, X‐ray, and ultraviolet), thermal (dry and moist heat), and chemical (ethylene oxide, ozone, chlorine dioxide, and hydrogen peroxide). For each sterilization process, the typical process parameters as defined by regulations and the mode of antimicrobial activity are summarized. Finally, the recommended microorganisms that are used as biological indicators to validate sterilization processes in accordance with the rules that are established by various regulatory agencies are summarized. The layers of a high-temperature novel GaAs:Fe diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) with an average Fe content up to 20 at. % were grown on (001) i-GaAs substrates using a pulsed laser deposition in a vacuum. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy investigations revealed that the conductive layers obtained at 180 and 200 şC are epitaxial, do not contain any second-phase inclusions, but contain the Fe-enriched columnar regions of overlapped microtwins. The TEM investigations of the non-conductive layer obtained at 250 şC revealed the embedded coherent Fe-rich clusters of GaAs:Fe DMS. The x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy investigations showed that Fe atoms form chemical bonds with Ga and As atoms with almost equal probability and thus the comparable number of Fe atoms substitute on Ga and As sites. The n-type conductivity of the obtained conductive GaAs:Fe layers is apparently associated with electron transport in a Fe acceptor impurity band within the GaAs band gap. A hysteretic negative magnetoresistance (MR) was observed in the conductive layers up to room temperature (RT). MR measurements point to the out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy of the conductive GaAs:Fe layers related to the presence of the columnar regions. The studies of the magnetic circular dichroism confirm that the layers obtained at 180, 200 and 250 şC are intrinsic ferromagnetic semiconductors and the Curie point can reach up to at least RT in case of the conductive layer obtained at 200 şC. It was suggested that in heavily Fe-doped GaAs layers the ferromagnetism is related to the Zener double exchange between Fe atoms with different valence states via an intermediate As and Ga atom. Background: Production and health traits are central in cattle breeding. Advances in next-generation sequencing technologies and genotype imputation have increased the resolution of gene mapping based on genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Thus, numerous candidate genes that affect milk yield, milk composition, and mastitis resistance in dairy cattle are reported in the literature. Effect-bearing variants often affect multiple traits. Because the detection of overlapping quantitative trait loci (QTL) regions from single-trait GWAS is too inaccurate and subjective, multi-trait analysis is a better approach to detect pleiotropic effects of variants in candidate genes. However, large sample sizes are required to achieve sufficient power. Multi-trait meta-analysis is one approach to deal with this problem. Thus, we performed two multi-trait meta-analyses, one for three milk production traits (milk yield, protein yield and fat yield), and one for milk yield and mastitis resistance. Results: For highly correlated traits, the power to detect pleiotropy was increased by multi-trait meta-analysis compared with the subjective assessment of overlapping of single-trait QTL confidence intervals. Pleiotropic effects of lead single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were detected from the multi-trait meta-analysis were confirmed by bivariate association analysis. The previously reported pleiotropic effects of variants within the DGAT1 and MGST1 genes on three milk production traits, and pleiotropic effects of variants in GHR on milk yield and fat yield were confirmed. Furthermore, our results suggested that variants in KCTD16, KCNK18 and ENSBTAG00000023629 had pleiotropic effects on milk production traits. For milk yield and mastitis resistance, we identified possible pleiotropic effects of variants in two genes, GC and DGAT1. Conclusions: Multi-trait meta-analysis improves our ability to detect pleiotropic interactions between milk production traits and identifies variants with pleiotropic effects on milk production traits and mastitis resistance. Sedimentary phosphorus (P) forms are important representatives of P sources and their bioavailability as well as the potential of sediments to release P in water. In this study, surface sediments along a transect of the Changjiang Estuary and two transects along the Andong salt marsh in the southwest of Hangzhou Bay were subjected to the elucidation of sedimentary P species using the standards, measurements, and testing (SMT) and sequential extraction (SEDEX) methods. The results showed that the mean sedimentary P forms elucidated by the SMT method were as follows: organic P (OP; ∼11–14 mg/kg; ∼30–45% of total P; TP) > apatite P (∼5–15 mg/kg; ∼21–36% TP) > Fe/Al-P (∼8–14 mg/kg; ∼31–34% TP), with inorganic P (IP) composing 54–70% of TP. The mean sedimentary P forms elucidated by the SEDEX method were as follows: authigenic P (∼54–68 mg/kg; ∼41–46% TP) > extractable P (Ex-P; ∼36–53 mg/kg; ∼28–34%) > Fe-P (∼21–27 mg/kg; ∼13–19%) > OP (∼8.7–13 mg/kg; ∼5–8%) > detrital P (De-P; ∼2 mg/kg; ∼1–2% TP), with IP composed of ∼91–94% TP. These results showed that the SEDEX method elucidated higher concentrations of sedimentary P forms as well as the TP from these coastal sediments although the SMT method had the advantage of being more economic and faster. The results of both the SMT and SEDEX methods showed that the Andong salt marsh and Changjiang Estuary sediments had much bioavailable P. The mean percentages of bioavailable P from the SMT and SEDEX methods were ∼64–74% and 52–56% of TP, respectively, indicating that these sediments were prone to release P to the coastal areas. A zirconium-modified granular zeolite (ZMGZ) was created and investigated for the suppression of the internal P loading in shallow landscape water bodies in this study. Results showed that the as-synthesized ZMGZ possessed high phosphate sorption capacity with a Langmuir maximum monolayer uptake capacity of 6.87 mg PO43−/g. Capping of landscape water body sediments with ZMGZ reduced the releasing rate of soluble reactive P (SRP) from the sediments into the overlying water, and it significantly reduced the SRP releasing rate under anoxic condition. Furthermore, the sediment capping decreased the pore water SRP concentration, and it was difficult for most of P trapped by the ZMGZ covering layer to be re-released into the water column. When the ZMGZ in the covering layer was mixed with the sediment, the ZMGZ became a sediment amendment. Mixing of landscape water body sediments with ZMGZ also resulted in the reduction of the SRP concentrations in the overlying and pore waters under the conditions of low and high dissolved oxygen, and it was also hard for most of P adsorbed by the added ZMGZ to be released back into the water column. Additionally, the addition of sediments with ZMGZ led to the decrease of the amounts of mobile and bioavailable P in the sediments. To sum up, we conclude that the capping/mixing combination method, which involves sediment capping with ZMGZ at first and then gradual mixing of ZMGZ with sediment via various natural disturbances (e.g., physical disturbance and bioturbation), is a very promising strategy for inhibiting the release of SRP from shallow landscape water body sediments into the overlying water. Purpose: To explore the mechanisms in the deposition and release of phosphorus (P) in the sediment of a shallow eutrophic lake using preserved samples, we investigated the vertical and temporal changes in P, manganese (Mn), sulfur (S), iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) in the sediment samples and the phosphate in the sediment pore water samples over a period of 6 years.Materials and methods: The upper 15 cm of sediment from Lake Kasumigaura in Japan was collected monthly from 2003 to 2008 from the center of the lake. Sediment cores were divided into seven depth segments and were acid-digested for an elemental analysis via inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. Phosphate concentrations of the sediment pore water were determined using the molybdenum blue method. A multiple regression analysis was conducted by setting the P content as the response variable and Mn, S, Fe, Al, Ca, and Mg as explanatory variables.Results and discussion: The results of the multiple regression analysis demonstrated that P co-precipitates with Fe and Al oxides and accumulates on the sediment surface. The vertical distributions of Mn and S suggest that Mn reduction occurs within the 0-1-cm-depth layer of the sediment and that iron sulfide is actively formed in the 6-10-cm-depth layer of the sediment. These findings imply that the layer in which ferric oxides are reduced to ferrous ions is present near the 1-6-cm-depth layer of the sediment. This layer corresponds to the layer in which the maximum phosphate concentration of the sediment pore water often occurred (the 2-6-cm-depth layer). These results indicate that vertical distributions of mineral elements are useful for assessing P dynamics in sediments.Conclusions: The lake sediments record the dynamics of P in the sediment. Our analytical approach using long-term observation data demonstrated that the accumulation and release of P associated with a change in the redox state can be assessed based on the vertical distributions of mineral elements in the lake sediments. We tested the hypothesis that mineralization of molybdenum unreactive phosphorus (MUP) in pore water is the major pathway for the changes in the concentration of molybdenum-reactive P (MRP) in pore water and inorganic P in sediment particles. The concentration of inorganic P in the sediment particles increased from December to April in Lake Kasumigaura, whereas concentrations of organic P in the sediment particles and MUP in pore water decreased. These results suggest that MUP mineralization plays a key role as the source of MRP, whereas desorption of inorganic P from the sediment particles into the pore water is a minor process. One-dimensional numerical simulation of sediment particles and the pore water supported the hypothesis. Diffusive flux of MUP was small in pore water, even in near-surface layers, so mineralization was the dominant process for changing the MUP concentration in the pore water. For MRP, diffusion was the dominant process in the surface layer, whereas adsorption onto the sediment was the dominant process in deeper layers. Researchers usually ignore organic P in the sediment, but organic P in sediment particles and the pore water is a key source of inorganic P in the sediment particles and pore water; our results suggest that in Lake Kasumigaura, organic P in the sediment is an important source, even at depths more than 1 cm below the sediment surface. Phosphorus (P) fractionations in the surface sediment of Sancha Lake in China's southwestern Sichuan Province were examined to assess the potential P release at the water-sediment interface and to understand its seasonal (2009-2010) and historical dynamics (1989-2010) in the surface water. Elevated P concentrations were detected in the sediment at main reservoir inflow, south canal of the Dujiangyan irrigation network, and intensive cage fish farming area, accounting for 32 and 40% of current total P discharges. The highest total P concentration (11,200 μg P g) was observed in the upper sediment below intensive fish farming area with a specific enrichment of HCl-P (51% of total P) mainly from fish feeds and feces. These sediments had larger MgCl-P pools with higher diffusive P fluxes (0.43-0.47 mg m d) from surface sediment than those from other areas (0.25-0.42 mg m d). The general small proportion of MgCl-P (5.7-10%) and low diffusive P fluxes from surface sediment (<0.02% of sediment P storage (0-1 cm)) indicate low mobility and slow release of P from sediments. The sediment as an internal P source led to a 3-4-year lag for P concentration decrease in the surface water after restriction of anthropogenic P discharges since 2005. Thus, the peak P concentration in April and September could be explained as a combined effect of supplementing internal loading via reductive processes in sediments and seasonal water vertical circulation in the early spring and fall. To investigate the effective depth from the surface sediment, and phosphorus fractions related to phosphorus release under short-term anoxic conditions, varying lengths of sediment cores taken from Lake Kasumigaura, a large shallow polymictic lake in Japan, were incubated for a few weeks and then analyzed. Results showed few differences in total phosphorus (TP) amount per unit area in overlying waters irrespective of the core thickness, and sums of TP in both overlying water and 0- to 2-cm sediment layers were nearly equal before and after the experiment, indicating that phosphorus was released mainly from the 0- to 2-cm layer by dissolution. In contrast, phosphorus was decreased in pore water below a 2-cm depth, probably through sorption to sediment solids. The citrate-dithionite-bicarbonate total phosphorus (CBD-TP) and non-reactive phosphorus extracted by NaOH (NaOH-NRP) in sediment solids in the 0- to 2-cm layer decreased during the experiment. We observed phosphorus (P) compound groups in sediment in Lake Kasumigaura in winter (February and March) and summer (July and August) to identify how their composition differs between the seasons. The concentration of soluble unreactive P in sediment pore water (SUP) was significantly higher in winter than in summer, whereas the concentration of soluble reactive P (SRP) was significantly higher in summer than in winter. In summer, when the concentration of SRP was high, the concentration of orthophosphate was greatest (~80 %) among the P compound groups. The concentration of orthophosphate diesters had a significant negative correlation with SUP concentration and was significantly lower in winter (high SUP concentration) than in summer. Such relative abundance of P compound groups in sediment could have resulted from adsorption of orthophosphate in summer and degradation of orthophosphate diesters in winter; these seasonal processes could contribute significantly to the changes in the concentrations of SRP and SUP, possibly influencing the P concentrations in the water column in Lake Kasumigaura. The aim of this study was to evaluate the participation of polymorphism at position C421A and mRNA expression of the ABCG2 gene in the development of peptic ulcers, which is a very common and severe disease. ABCG2, encoded by the ABCG2 gene, has been found inter alia in the gastrointestinal tract, where it plays a protective role eliminating xenobiotics from cells into the extracellular environment. The materials for the study were biopsies of gastric mucosa taken during a routine endoscopy. For genotyping by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) at position C421A, DNA was isolated from 201 samples, while for the mRNA expression level by real-time PCR, RNA was isolated from 60 patients. The control group of healthy individuals consisted of 97 blood donors. The dominant genotype in the group of peptic ulcer patients and healthy individuals was homozygous CC. No statistically significant differences between healthy individuals and the whole group of peptic ulcer patients and, likewise, between the subgroups of peptic ulcer patients (infected and uninfected with Helicobacter pylori) were found. ABCG2 expression relative to GAPDH expression was found in 38 of the 60 gastric mucosa samples. The expression level of the gene varies greatly among cases. The statistically significant differences between the intensity (p=0.0375) of H. pylori infection and ABCG2 gene expression have been shown. China has been confronted with serious water quality deterioration concurrent with rapid socioeconomic progress during the past 40 years. Consequently, knowledge about economic growth and lake water quality dynamics is important to understand eutrophication processes. Objectives were to (i) reconstruct historical nutrient accumulation and the basin economic progress on burial flux (BF); (ii) determine forms and structures of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in sediment and water using six cores in three of the most severely eutrophic lake areas in China (i.e., Eastern Plain, Yunnan-Guizhou Plain, and Inner Mongolia-Xinjiang regions). Results suggest that BFs of total nitrogen (TN) continued to increase in sediment, whereas total phosphorus (TP) levels were consistent or only slightly increased, except in highly polluted lakes during the past decades. Similar results were observed for concentrations of nutrients in water (i.e., increased N/P). This historical distribution pattern was correlated to long-term fertilization practices of farmers in the watershed (N fertilization exceeds that of P) and was contingent upon pollution control policies (e.g., emphasized P whereas N was ignored). Vertical profiles of BFs indicated that lake nutrient accumulation included three stages in China. Nutrient accumulation started in the 1980s, accelerated from the 1990s, and then declined after 2000. Before the 1980s, nutrients were relatively low and stable, with nutrient inputs being controlled by natural processes. Thereafter, N- and P-bound sediments dramatically increased due to the increasing influence of anthropogenic processes. Nutrients were primarily derived from industries and domestic sewage. After 2000, BFs of nutrients were steady and even decreased, owing to implementation of watershed load reduction policies. The decreasing NaOH-extracted P (Fe/Al-P) and increasing organic phosphorus (OP) indicated that the source of exogenous pollution underwent a shift. Inputs of nutrients were predominantly from agricultural and domestic sewage, whereas industrial pollution has been gradually controlled in most of the watersheds. Historical nutrient dynamics suggest that the economy of China is growing at the expense of its aquatic ecological environments. Therefore, more attention to nutrient export to groundwater resulting from economic development is important for further aquatic ecosystem deterioration and eutrophication in China. This is the first description of the polymorphisms of arylalkylamine-N-acetyltransferase (AA-NAT) gene in Indian goats with different reproductive traits (twinning percentage and age of sexual maturity). Based on the important role of AA-NAT in reproduction, it is considered as a possible candidate gene for this trait. Two novel synonymous SNPs, C825T (exon2) and C1249T (exon3) were identified. All three possible genotypes (CC, CT and TT) were identified for C825T mutation whereas two genotypes were observed (CC and CT) for C1249T mutation. SNPs C825T and C1249T changed recognition site of restriction enzyme BtsCI (GGATG) and AciI (CCGC) and thus can be genotyped by the relatively simple and cost effective technique of PCR-RFLP for establishing further association with reproductive traits. Present results add to the meager existing knowledge and extend the spectrum of genetic variation of caprine candidate genes of reproductive traits, which is another step towards improvement of goat genetic resources and breeding. In order to understand phosphorus (P) cycling and mobility in the sediment of Dianchi Lake, the spatial distribution of P fractions in surface sediment has been investigated through sequential extraction. The relationship of P fractions with the P concentrations in the overlying water, mobile P contents, and organic matters was also analyzed to determine the potential mobility and the retention effect of P in surface sediments from Dianchi Lake. Results showed that (1) the average total amount of P in the surface sediments of Dianchi Lake was 2,050.31 ± 620.27 mg kg. The pollution levels in Caohai and in the south of Waihai were significantly higher than those in other parts of the lake. The P fractions were ranked as follows: HCl-P > NaOH-RP > Res-P > BD-P > NaOH-NRP > NH4Cl-P. Among these P fractions, NaOH-RP content (1,285.23 ± 1,110.51 mg kg) was highest in Caohai sediments, whereas HCl-P (925.64 ± 513.58 mg kg) was dominant in Waihai. (2) The average content of mobile P was 242.31 ± 98.11 mg kg in sediments; this value accounted for 13.54 % of total extractable P. Nonetheless, this content decreased from north to south in the lake. The average immobile P content was 1,547.22 ± 593.05 mg kg. This value constituted 86.46 % of total extractable P. The trend of immobile P content was the opposite to that of mobile P content. (3) The P content and retention rate (66.93 %) of sediments were generally high. However, this rate was significantly lower in Caohai (13.80 %) than in Waihai (72.61 %). The solute carrier organic anion-transporting polypeptides (OATPs) are a family of transporter proteins that have been extensively recognized as key determinants of absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of various drugs because of their broad substrate specificity and wide tissue distribution as well as the involvement of drug-drug interaction. Human OATP1A2 is a drug uptake transporter known for its broad substrate specificity, including many drugs in clinical use. OATP1A2 expression has been detected in the intestine, liver, brain and kidney. A considerable number of single nucleotide polymorphisms have been found for the OATP1A2 gene. A number of studies have shown that the cellular uptake and pharmacokinetic behavior of some drugs may be impaired in the case of certain OATP1A2 variants. Interestingly, some studies show that the mRNA expression of OATP1A2 is nearly 10-fold higher in breast cancer compared with adjacent healthy breast tissues. ATP binding cassette transporter G1 (ABCG1) promotes lipidation of nascent high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles, acting as an intracellular transporter. SNP rs1893590 (c.-204A > C) of ABCG1 gene has been previously studied and reported as functional over plasma HDL-C and lipoprotein lipase activity. This study aimed to investigate the relationships of SNP rs1893590 with plasma lipids and lipoproteins in a large Brazilian population. Were selected 654 asymptomatic and normolipidemic volunteers from both genders. Clinical and anthropometrical data were taken and blood samples were drawn after 12 h fasting. Plasma lipids and lipoproteins, as well as HDL particle size and volume were determined. Genomic DNA was isolated for SNP rs1893590 detection by TaqMan OpenArray Real-Time PCR Plataform (Applied Biosystems). Mann-Whitney U, Chi square and two-way ANOVA were the used statistical tests. No significant differences were found in the comparison analyses between the allele groups for all studied parameters. Conversely, significant interactions were observed between SNP and age over plasma HDL-C, were volunteers under 60 years with AA genotype had increased HDL-C (p = 0.048). Similar results were observed in the group with body mass index (BMI) < 25 kg/m, where volunteers with AA genotype had higher HDL-C levels (p = 0.0034), plus an increased HDL particle size (p = 0.01). Kumaun Himalayan lakes, situated in the state of Uttarakhand, are one of the major tourist attractions in northern part of India. Present study is aimed to understand the behavior of phosphorus in lake sediments and different chemical forms of phosphorus in sediments. The study was accomplished by collection of core sediments from lakes. The core samples were analyzed for major oxides, nutrients, and phosphorus fractionation. The study shows that lake sediments are derived from catchment rocks. Total concentrations of nutrients (P, N, and S) in sediments varied differently and are derived from both natural and anthropogenic activities. Phosphorus in sediments is sequestered more by calcium than iron and aluminum oxides, as carbonate flour apatite. Fractionation study shows that phosphorus as carbonate flour apatite and in exchangeable fraction. The dissolution of organic matter results in release of phosphorus from sediments. The study also shows biogenic silica and sulfate act as major competitors of phosphorus for sorption sites of iron oxides resulting in the release of phosphorus from sediments. A unique collection of paleofungi from permafrost sediments, cryopegs, paleoseeds, and frozen volcanic ash from the Arctic and Antarctic, collected at different depths, was created in All-Russian Collection of Microorganisms (VKM). Some samples are as old as 3 million years. The collection includes psychrotolerant fungi, which have wide adaptive potential and are able to thrive in low-temperature habitats, and fungi that remain viable due to the presence of natural cryoprotectors that ensure the survival of fungal cells during low-temperature preservation in permafrost sediments. The collection contains 780 strains from 79 genera and more than 160 species and is maintained in accordance with international standards of microbial viability preservation and information support. Single nucleotide polymorphisms located in 5′ untranslated regions (5′UTRs) can regulate gene expression and have clinical impact. Recognition of functionally significant sequences within 5′UTRs is crucial in next-generation sequencing applications. Furthermore, information about the behavior of 5′UTRs during gene evolution is scarce. Using the example of the ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) gene (Tangier disease), we describe our algorithm for functionally significant sequence finding. 5′UTR features (upstream start and stop codons, open reading frames (ORFs), GC content, motifs, and secondary structures) were studied using freely available bioinformatics tools in 55 vertebrate orthologous genes obtained from Ensembl and UCSC. The most conserved sequences were suggested as hot spots. Exon and intron enhancers and silencers (sc35, ighg2 cgamma2, ctnt, gh-1, and fibronectin eda exon), transcription factors (TFIIA, TATA, NFAT1, NFAT4, and HOXA13), some of them cancer related, and microRNA (hsa-miR-4474-3p) were localized to these regions. An upstream ORF, overlapping with the main ORF in primates and possibly coding for a small bioactive peptide, was also detected. Moreover, we showed several features of 5′UTRs, such as GC content variation, hairpin structure conservation or 5′UTR segmentation, which are interesting from a phylogenetic point of view and can stimulate further evolutionary oriented research.
