1. '5Essentials' Survey in CPS: Using School Climate Survey Results to Guide Practice. Research Report

Abstract

Despite evidence supporting the importance of school climate, little is known about how practitioners understand and use data from climate surveys to guide schoolwide improvement. The expanded use of school climate surveys underscores the importance of understanding how schools and districts are utilizing this evidence both to drive improvement and to simultaneously evaluate and hold schools accountable. This information is critical to ensuring that policymakers, states, and districts establish appropriate expectations and allocate adequate resources for the data's use in practice. This report explores how schools in Chicago Public Schools (CPS) understand and utilize data from one climate survey, the "5Essentials" Survey, in the context of CPS improvement efforts and accountability policies. Of the more than 50 existing school climate surveys, one of the few with extensive validation is the "5Essentials" Survey. Developed more than twenty years ago by researchers at the UChicago Consortium on School Research (UChicago Consortium), the "5Essentials" Survey is a comprehensive, evidence-based system designed to drive improvement in schools through the identification of strengths and needs associated with five critical domains of school organization. This report encompasses findings from a year-long qualitative study examining the processes and outcomes of practitioners' engagement with the "5Essentials" Survey in the context of school improvement. The study addresses two primary research questions: (1) How do schools understand and utilize data from the "5Essentials" Survey in the context of improvement efforts? and (2) What factors facilitate or impede schools' engagement with their "5Essentials" results? It is hoped that findings from this report will provide helpful information for policymakers, districts, and state and local education agencies considering the use of school climate surveys in accountability, reporting, and/or improvement.

3. Neural optoelectrodes merging semiconductor scalability with polymeric-like bendability for low damage acute in vivo neuron readout and stimulation

Abstract

Neural optoelectrodes can read and manipulate large numbers of neurons in vivo. However, state-of-the-art devices rely on either standard microfabrication materials (i.e., silicon and silicon nitride), which result in high scalability and throughput but cause severe brain damage due to implant stiffness, or polymeric devices, which are more compliant but whose scalability and implantation in the brain are challenging. Here, we merge the gap between silicon-based fabrication scalability and low (polymeric-like) stiffness by fabricating a nitride and oxide-based optoelectrode with a high density of sensing microelectrodes, passive photonic circuits, and a very small tip thickness (5 μm). We achieve this by removing all the silicon supporting material underneath the probe's tip - while leaving only the nitride and glass optical ultrathin layers - through a single isotropic etch step. Our optoelectrode integrates 64 electrodes and multiple passive optical outputs, resulting in a cross-sectional area coefficient (the cross section divided by the number of sensors and light emitters) of 3.1 - smaller than other optoelectrodes. It also combines a low bending stiffness (∼4.4 × 10-11 N m2), comparable or approaching several state-of-the-art polymeric optoelectrodes. We tested several mechanical insertions of our devices in vivo in rats and demonstrated that we can pierce the pia without using additional temporary supports.

5. Racial Microaggressions and Latinxs' Well-being: A Systematic Review

Abstract

ABSTRACTAs a form of racism that is both subtle and ubiquitous, racial microaggressions (RMAs) can have cumulatively deleterious physical and emotional effects on people of a specific race or ethnicity. While a significant body of knowledge about RMAs has been developed from a Black-White perspective, this study was undertaken to explore extant empirical research that specifically addresses the physical and emotional effects of racism and RMAs on people who are Latinx-American. Through the implementation of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, we systematically searched multiple databases (PubMed, PsycInfo, Social Services Abstract, and CINAHL) to identify studies that specifically focused on Latinxs’ well-being in response to RMA. Following a systematic search and screening process, nine studies met all of the study’s inclusion criteria. Researchers reviewed studies for content, methods, effect sizes, and risk of bias. Strengths and shortcomings of the existing studies were identified, followed by suggestions for future research.

6. Human anti-α3(IV)NC1 antibody drug conjugates target glomeruli to resolve nephritis

Abstract

Current therapies to limit kidney disease progression lack specificity and often have systemic toxicity. To approach this problem, we postulated that a human monoclonal antibody (F1.1), directed against the noncollagenous-1 domain (NC1) of α3(IV) collagen that localizes in glomeruli, could serve as a vehicle for targeted drug delivery. Given enhanced exposure of the NC1 domain of α3(IV) during glomerular diseases, with limited epitope expression in other organs, α3(IV)NC1 provides an ideal target for delivery of disease-modifying agents. As a potential disease-modifying agent, we initially took advantage of recent observations that PGE2promoted recovery after established injury during the course of nephrotoxic nephritis. To address the general applicability of the approach, the efficacy of glomerular delivery of dexamethasone was also examined. To achieve glomerular targeted therapy, PGE2and dexamethasone were coupled to F1.1. After confirmation of the composition and activity of the conjugates, both glomerular localization and the capacity of the conjugates to modify disease were evaluated. After injection into mice with established nephritis, resolution of disease was enhanced with both agents, with normalization of histology and improved blood urea nitrogen levels in conjugate-treated mice compared with untreated mice. The results provide a novel means of targeting glomeruli during nephritis, irrespective of cause, by providing efficient drug delivery, with the potential of limiting systemic effects.
