Abstract Fiddler crabs, as coastal ecosystem engineers, play a crucial role in enhancing biodiversity and accelerating the flow of material and energy. Here we show how widespread crab burrows modify the carbon sequestration capacity of different habitats across a large climatic gradient. The process of crab burrowing results in the reallocation of sediment organic carbon and humus. Crab burrows can increase more greenhouse gases emissions compared to the sediment matrix (CO2: by 17–30%; CH4: by 49–141%). Straightforward calculations indicate that these increased emissions could offset 35–134% of sediment carbon burial in these two ecosystems. This research highlights the complex interactions between crab burrows, habitat type, and climate which reveal a potential lower carbon sink function of blue carbon ecosystems than previously expected without considering crab burrows.

Eutrophication resulting from anthropogenic activities has been recognized as a significant driver of changes in ecosystem functioning. Furthermore, it may exacerbate the top–down effect and thus exert an important impact on plant growth. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a 3-year manipulative field experiment to investigate the impacts of nitrogen addition and crab herbivory on the growth of Phragmites australis in the salt marsh of the Yellow River Delta. The results demonstrated that a 3-year nitrogen addition can significantly increase the total nitrogen and carbon content of P. australis leaves, thereby enhancing their nutritional value and palatability, as well as increasing the proportion of leaves consumed by crabs. Therefore, nitrogen addition together with crab herbivory had a significant negative effect on P. australis height, leaf length, and leaf breadth in the ambient crab and procedural crab cage treatment compared to the crab exclusion treatment. The structural equation modeling further substantiated these findings. The model revealed a direct and positive correlation between nitrogen addition and leaf nutrient content (path coefficient = 0.34). Additionally, it demonstrated a direct and positive relationship between leaf nutrient content and the proportion of leaves consumed by crabs (path coefficient = 0.22). Simultaneously, there was an observed negative correlation (path coefficient = − 0.37) between the proportion of leaves consumed by crabs and plant functional traits, represented by leaf length in the model, during 2018. Moreover, the crab exclusion treatment significantly reduced the proportion of leaves consumed by crabs and thus enhanced the P. australis individuals, leaf number, and biomass. Overall, crab herbivory had a significant detrimental top–down effect on the growth of P. australis, and nitrogen enrichment may exacerbate this top–down effect. The findings of our study highlight the combined adverse effects of nutrient enrichment and top–down on plant functional traits and plant growth. The findings of this study will contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the underlying factors influencing vegetation degradation in coastal wetland, thereby establishing a solid theoretical framework for the conservation and management of wetland ecosystems within the context of global environmental change.

The invasive species Spartina alterniflora has significantly disrupted the ecological stability of coastal wetland ecosystems. Consequently, its control has become an important aspect of coastal wetland conservation. When controlling S. alterniflora, it is imperative to assess the ecological impacts of control methods. In this study, the effects of different control methods, i.e. “mowing + flooding” (MF) and “mowing + plowing” (MP), on the soil carbon and nitrogen contents in coastal wetlands were investigated in the Yellow River Delta, China. The results showed that the contents of soil organic carbon, inorganic carbon, and total nitrogen in the MF area within 2 years after treatment were 2.03–3.93 g/kg, 13.74–16.06 g/kg, and 0.24–0.47 g/kg, respectively, which were 36.33 %–-199 %, 2.91 %–36.71 % and 115.42 %–212.09 % higher than that those in the CK area, respectively. The C/N ratio in the MF treatment was 6.98–8.54, which was 5.42 %–40.30 % lower than that in the CK treatment. The contents of soil organic carbon, inorganic carbon, and total nitrogen in the MP area were 1.52–2.3 g/kg, 13.07–14.94 g/kg, and 0.2–0.32 g/kg, respectively, which were 15.91 %–54.18 %, 0.97 %–15.56 % and 35.19 %–182.26 % higher than those in the CK area. The C/N ratio in the MP area was 14.72 %–46.79 % lower than that in the CK area. Correlation analysis revealed that the soil carbon and nitrogen contents in the MF area were significantly positively correlated with the soil water content and electrical conductivity, and the C/N ratio was significantly negatively correlated with the soil sand content. In the MP area, the soil carbon and nitrogen contents were affected by the soil water content and electrical conductivity. The soil organic carbon content was also significantly negatively correlated with soil pH and significantly positively correlated with soil clay content. The C/N ratio was significantly negatively correlated with the total nitrogen content. Overall, the effects of MF on the soil carbon and nitrogen content in coastal wetlands were greater than those of MP. Future studies need to pay attention to the changes in tidal hydrological processes to more accurately assess the impacts of the control of S. alterniflora on the overall carbon sink capacity of the intertidal zone.

Saltmarsh is widely recognized as a blue carbon ecosystem with great carbon storage potential. Yet soil respiration with a major contributor of atmospheric CO2 can offset its carbon sink function. Up to date, mechanisms ruling CO2 emissions from saltmarsh soil remain unclear. In particular, the effect of precipitation on soil CO2 emissions is unclear in coastal wetlands, due the lack of outdoor data in real situations. We conducted a 7-year field manipulation experiment in a saltmarsh in the Yellow River Delta, China. Soil respiration in five treatments (−60%, −40%, +0%, +40%, and + 60% of precipitation) was measured in the field. Topsoils from the last 3 years (2019–2021) were analyzed for CO2 production potential by microcosm experiments. Furthermore, quality and quantity of soil organic carbon and microbial function were tested. Results show that only the moderate precipitation rise of +40% induced a 66.2% increase of CO2 production potential for the microcosm experiments, whereas other data showed a weak impact. Consistently, soil respiration was also found to be strongest at +40%. The CO2 production potential is positively correlated with soil organic carbon, including carbon quantity and quality. But microbial diversity did not show any positive response to precipitation sizes. r-/K-strategy seemed to be a plausible explanation for biological factors. Overall, our finding reveal that a moderate precipitation increase, not decrease or a robust increase, in a saltmarsh is likely to improve soil organic carbon quality and quantity, and bacterial oligotroph:copiotroph ratio, ultimately leading to an enhanced CO2 production.

The input of fresh organic carbon into soils can stimulate organic carbon mineralization via priming effects (PEs). However, little is known about the characterization of PEs in coastal wetlands. We investigated the PEs of two salt marshes (Suaeda salsa and Phragmites australis) in the Yellow River Delta by adding 13C-labeled glucose to soils collected from the 0–10 cm and 20–30 cm layers of both salt marshes. The addition of glucose produced a significant positive PE in both soil layers for both vegetation types. There were no differences in the PE of the topsoil layer between the two vegetation types (p > 0.05), whereas the PE of S. salsa was 19.5% higher than that of P. australis in the subsoil layer (p < 0.05). In addition, the topsoil layer showed a higher average PE of 29.1% compared to that of the subsoil layer for both vegetation types (p < 0.05). The differences in the PEs between the two vegetation types and the two layers could be associated with a differential soil salinity, substrate availability, and microbial community structure. Our findings highlight the important role of PEs in regulating the soil carbon storage of coastal salt marshes, which should be considered when assessing and modeling the soil carbon cycling of coastal wetlands.

As an invasive species, Spartina alterniflora has caused serious harm to many coastal wetland ecosystems, and its prevention and control have become the top priority of coastal wetland protection. To explore the difference in the control effects of different herbicides on S. alterniflora and optimize the chemical control technology, four experiments were carried out in this study, namely, different herbicides, different doses, different dilution ratios, and mowing + herbicide. The results showed that (1) 75 days after the application of herbicide, the control effects of high doses of glyphosate (8.0 kg ha−1), cyhalofop-butyl (0.8 kg ha−1) or imazameth (0.4 kg ha−1) were only 25%-38%, and the control effects of lower doses were worse; (2) Haloxyfop-R-methyl could permanently kill S. alterniflora. Applying 0.30 kg ha−1 and 0.45 kg ha−1 of haloxyfop-R-methyl in June, the control efficacy was >95% in the first year and 84%–99% in the third year. In addition, there was no significant difference in weed control effect when the same dose of Haloxyfop-R-methyl was sprayed twice on June 8 and July 28 or once on June 8; (3) The mixed application of two of the four herbicides, namely, glyphosate, cyhalofop-butyl, imazameth and Haloxyfop-R-methyl, did not improve the control effect on S. alterniflora; (4) When the herbicide stock solution was diluted 58–461 times with water, Haloxyfop-R-methyl had a very good control effect on S. alterniflora; (5) Spraying Haloxyfop-R-methyl immediately after mowing could not effectively control S. alterniflora, and the regeneration of S. alterniflora was serious in the second year; and (6) Compared with the S. alterniflora area without herbicide application, there was no significant change in the species and quantity of macrobenthos one month after herbicide application. However, in the third year after herbicide application, S. alterniflora near the study area failed to invade the area where the herbicide was applied, indicating that residual toxins were likely to remain in the soil. In summary, haloxyfop-R-methyl can effectively control S. alterniflora, and haloxyfop-R-methyl application can be used as an optional method to eliminate newly invaded small areas of S. alterniflora, but it is not recommended to use herbicides in large areas. In the future, it is necessary to strengthen the monitoring of herbicide residues in soil and water and comprehensively assess the impact of herbicides on the environment and organisms to provide sufficient technical support for the use of herbicides to control S. alterniflora.

Coastal wetlands remarkably influence terrestrial carbon (C) stock by serving as natural reservoirs for ‘blue carbon’. Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) enrichment shapes the dynamics of soil and plant communities, consequently affecting the C balance and ecosystem functions. The impacts of various levels of N enrichment on CO _2 sequestration in coastal wetlands, however, remain elusive. Here we conducted a long-term field study of N fertilization in a coastal wetland in the Yellow River Delta, China, to investigate N effects on soil properties, indicators of plant dynamics, and fluxes of ecosystem CO _2 . The results indicated that moderate N enrichment (5 g N m ^−2 y ^−1 ) stimulated C fluxes with increases in gross primary productivity (+26.4%), ecosystem respiration (+23.3%), and net ecosystem exchange (NEE, +31.5%) relative to the control. High (10 g N m ^−2 y ^−1 ) and extreme (20 g N m ^−2 y ^−1 ) amounts of N enrichment, however, had relatively minor impacts on these CO _2 fluxes. Overall, we observed a decrease in soil electrical conductivity (−24.6%) and increases in soil organic C (+25.2%) and microbial biomass C (+369.3%) for N enrichment. N enrichment also altered the composition of plant species, with a higher proportion of a local dominant species ( Phragmites australis ), and affected root biomass distribution, with more biomass near the soil surface. Structural equation modeling explained 65.2% of the variance of NEE and supported the assumption that N enrichment could alter the dynamics of soil properties and plant conditions and accelerate ecosystem CO _2 sequestration. These findings have important implications for forecasting the C cycle with increasing N deposition in coastal wetlands, contributing to the projections of the global C budget.

Photosynthetic characteristics of dominant plant species are widely used as indicators of ecosystem responses to global environmental changes such as precipitation change. How different plant species respond physiologically to seasonal precipitation change in coastal marshes is largely unclear. Spring is a critical stage for plant colonization and growth, and a field experiment was conducted to study the response in leaf carbon fixation of dominant plant species to 5 seasonal precipitation distribution treatments [+73%, +56%, control (CK), −56%, and −73%] in coastal marshes. Results showed a dual asymmetric response of the maximum photosynthetic rate (Pn max) of dominant species (Phragmites australis) to spring precipitation distribution (SPD), showing that Pn max was more sensitive to increased than decreased SPD, and the effect size of increased SPD on it was approximately 2.4 times greater than decreased SPD under the −56% to +56% precipitation ranges. On the contrary, when the precipitation distribution range was further extended to ±73%, Pn max more sensitive to decreased than increased SPD, and the effect size of decreased SPD on it was approximately 2 times greater than increased SPD. The structural equation modeling revealed that the effect of SPD on Pn max is primarily mediated by the direct effect of soil salinity and gs and the indirect effect of soil water content, which determined the magnitude direction of the effect of SPD on Pn max. Our findings demonstrate that soil salinity is the main controlling factor for the carbon sequestration of leaves under SPD in a coastal marsh. This leads to adaptive strategies for functional traits of dominant species, which, in turn, influence leaf-level CO2 fixation and the carbon sink function of the entire ecosystem.

The availability and stoichiometry ratio of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) play vital roles in plant trophic dynamics and primary production. However, the responses of these plant traits to varying N and P supplies remain largely unclear for supratidal wetland herbs. Here, we conducted a 4-year field manipulation experiment in a supratidal wetland in the Yellow River Delta. The changes in aboveground biomass, leaf N and P concentrations and N:P ratios of two dominant herbs (Suaeda glauca and Phragmites australis) were examined at 3 overall nutrient supply levels (low, medium and high) combined with 3 N:P supply ratios (5:1, 15:1 and 45:1). The results showed that the leaf trophic dynamics of the two dominant species rely on the overall supply level as well as on the N:P supply ratio, while the aboveground biomass of both species was only significantly influenced by the overall supply level. With the increase in supply level, S. glauca gained an advantage over P. australis in aboveground biomass competition. The leaf N and P concentrations of both species raised with the respective increasing nutrient inputs, and N:P improved with the increasing supply ratio. The leaf stoichiometry of S. glauca was more strongly influenced by the various N and P supplies than that of P. australis. Specifically, the gap of nutrient contents between the two species widened as nutrient availability improved, with the dominance of S. glauca increasing while that of P. australis decreasing. This species-specific response may explain the altered aboveground biomass of the two species. Our findings suggested that changing the N and P supply can potentially influence primary productivity by changing leaf nutrient status, indirectly affecting the shifts in plant dominance and community composition in supratidal wetland ecosystems.

Wetlands are natural sources of methane (CH4) emissions, providing the largest contribution to the atmospheric CH4 pool. Changes in the ecohydrological environment of coastal salt marshes, especially the surface inundation level, cause instability in the CH4 emission levels of coastal ecosystems. Although soil methane-associated microorganisms play key roles in both CH4 generation and metabolism, how other microorganisms regulate methane emission and their responses to inundation has not been investigated. Here, we studied the responses of prokaryotic, fungal and cercozoan communities following 5 years of inundation treatments in a wetland experimental site, and molecular ecological networks analysis (MENs) was constructed to characterize the interdomain relationship. The result showed that the degree of inundation significantly altered the CH4 emissions, and the abundance of the pmoA gene for methanotrophs shifted more significantly than the mcrA gene for methanogens, and they both showed significant positive correlations to methane flux. Additionally, we found inundation significantly altered the diversity of the prokaryotic and fungal communities, as well as the composition of key species in interactions within prokaryotic, fungal, and cercozoan communities. In the coastal wetland, nitrogen is a limiting element for plant growth and reproduction. However, nitrogen inputs increase annually due to the rise in nitrogen emissions from human activity in coastal wetlands. Nitrogen additions may alter the coastal wetlands’ soil properties, bacterial compositions, and plant growth. The majority of nitrogen addition studies, however, are conducted in grasslands and forests, and the relationship between soil properties, bacterial compositions, and plant growth driven by nitrogen addition is poorly understood in coastal marshes. We conducted an experiment involving nitrogen addition in the Phragmites australis population of the tidal marsh of the Yellow River Delta. Since 2017, four nitrogen addition levels (N0:0 g • m-2 • year-1, N1:5 g • m-2 • year-1, N2:20 g • m-2 • year-1, N3:50 g • m-2 • year-1) have been established in the experiment. From 2017 to 2020, we examined soil properties and plant traits. In 2018, we also measured soil bacterial composition. We analyzed the effect of nitrogen addition on soil properties, plant growth, reproduction, and plant nutrients using linear mixed-effect models. Moreover, structural equation modeling (SEM) was utilized to determine the direct and indirect effects of nitrogen addition, soil properties, and bacterial diversity on plant growth. The results demonstrated that nitrogen addition significantly affected plant traits of P. australis. N1 and N2 levels generally resulted in higher plant height, diameter, leaf length, leaf breadth, and leaf TC than N0 and N3 levels. Nitrogen addition had significantly impacted soil properties, including pH, salinity, soil TC, and soil TS. The SEM revealed that nitrogen addition had a direct and positive influence on plant height. By modifying soil bacterial diversity, nitrogen addition also had an small indirect and positive impact on plant height. However, nitrogen addition had a great negative indirect impact on plant height through altering soil properties. Thus, nitrogen inputs may directly enhance the growth of P. australis at N1 and N2 levels. Nonetheless, the maximum nitrogen addition (N3) may impede P. australis growth by reducing soil pH. Therefore, to conserve the coastal tidal marsh, it is recommended that an excess of nitrogen input be regulated.

Water-use characteristics are important aspects of plant adaptation to environmental factors. While water-use efficiency (WUE) and water sources used by plants in arid habitats are commonly studied, water-use strategies of plants in coastal wetlands are poorly studied. Although ample water is available in coastal wetlands, water conditions vary among seasons, suggesting that the plant in coastal wetlands may need to adapt to seasonal changes in water availability.To uncover temporal variation in plant water-use strategies in the coastal wetland, we investigated WUE and water sources used by Phragmites australis in the tidal marsh of the Yellow River Delta employing stable isotopic composition indicators. Temporal variation of δ13C and δ18O in leaf organic matter were measured in two years (2018 and 2019) along with plant traits and environmental factors, to determine the factors affecting δ13C and δ18O in leaf organic matter. Water sources (rainfall, soil water in different depths, tidal water, and groundwater) were sampled for δ18O composition in the early growth season (2019 May, June, and July) to determine water sources using the Bayesian mixing model MixSIAR.We found that P. australis had high WUE in spring and autumn, but WUE declined during summer. Changes in WUE were explained by variation in plant height, leaf nutrient concentrations (C: N, total N, total S), leaf traits (leaf length and leaf number), soil electronic conductivity (EC), soil pH, soil nutrients (NO3-N at 0–30 cm soil depth, total S at 0–30 cm soil depth, available P at the soil depths of 0–10 cm and 40–50 cm, and total C at the 30–40 cm soil depth). Spring drought may enhance WUE through increasing soil salinity (i.e., EC) and lowering pH. Water uptake in the early growth season was composed mainly of rainfall, soil water, and groundwater. However, tidal water (i.e., ocean water) was not a main water source. To sum up, leaf WUE varied with seasons in the coastal wetland, which may be related to plant traits and soil factors, particularly salinity and pH. The plant in the tidal marsh may not take up ocean water, even though it is really abundant. Precipitation is still an important water source promoting growth of these plants in the coastal wetland, therefore, to conserve them, supplementing fresh water in the drought season is suggested.

Abstract Exotic species invasions have profound effects on native ecosystems, with the ecological effects of non‐native plants being especially pervasive. We investigated the impacts of a plant invasion on benthic invertebrate assemblages in intertidal wetlands of the Yellow River Delta, comparing benthic communities associated with exotic Spartina alterniflora against those associated with native plants (Tamarix chinensis, Suaeda salsa, and mudflat). Our study surprisingly found that the density, diversity, and richness of benthic invertebrates associated with S. alterniflora were higher than with native habitats. Multivariate analysis also revealed that the structure of benthic invertebrates in S. alterniflora habitats was different than in T. chinensis and mudflat habitats. The structure of invertebrates associated with the invasive S. alterniflora and native S. salsa was more similar, although the dominant species differed. Indicator species analyses indicated that each habitat was characterized by unique taxa. S. alterniflora invasion increased the beta diversity of the community, with the species turnover component being of most importance. Mollusks were most likely to be influenced by Spartina invasions. Given the extent of the S. alterniflora invasion in the Yellow River Delta, altered benthic invertebrate communities will likely have important implications for the ecology of the intertidal wetland ecosystems and deserve increased attention.

Abstract Background Glycine soja is a halophytic soybean native to saline soil in Yellow River Delta, China. Photosystem I (PSI) performance and the interaction between photosystem II (PSII) and PSI remain unclear in Glycine soja under salt stress. This study aimed to explore salt adaptability in Glycine soja in terms of photosystems coordination. Results Potted Glycine soja was exposed to 300 mM NaCl for 9 days with a cultivated soybean, Glycine max, as control. Under salt stress, the maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) and PSI (△MR/MR0) were significantly decreased with the loss of PSI and PSII reaction center proteins in Glycine max, and greater PSI vulnerability was suggested by earlier decrease in △MR/MR0 than Fv/Fm and depressed PSI oxidation in modulated 820 nm reflection transients. Inversely, PSI stability was defined in Glycine soja, as △MR/MR0 and PSI reaction center protein abundance were not affected by salt stress. Consistently, chloroplast ultrastructure and leaf lipid peroxidation were not affected in Glycine soja under salt stress. Inhibition on electron flow at PSII acceptor side helped protect PSI by restricting electron flow to PSI and seemed as a positive response in Glycine soja due to its rapid recovery after salt stress. Reciprocally, PSI stability aided in preventing PSII photoinhibition, as the simulated feedback inhibition by PSI inactivation induced great decrease in Fv/Fm under salt stress. In contrast, PSI inactivation elevated PSII excitation pressure through inhibition on PSII acceptor side and accelerated PSII photoinhibition in Glycine max, according to the positive and negative correlation of △MR/MR0 with efficiency that an electron moves beyond primary quinone and PSII excitation pressure respectively. Conclusion Therefore, photosystems coordination depending on PSI stability and rapid response of PSII acceptor side contributed to defending salt-induced oxidative stress on photosynthetic apparatus in Glycine soja. Photosystems interaction should be considered as one of the salt adaptable mechanisms in this halophytic soybean.

The common reed (Phragmites australis) is a dominant species in the coastal wetlands of the Chinese Yellow River Delta, where it tolerates a wide range of salinity. Recent environmental changes have led to the increase of soil salinity in this region, which has degraded much of the local vegetation. Clones of common reeds from the tidal marsh may have adapted to local high salinity habitat through selection on genes and metabolic pathways conferring salt tolerance. This study aims to reveal molecular mechanisms underlying salt tolerance in the tidal reed by comparing them to the salt-sensitive freshwater reed under salt stress. We employed comparative transcriptomics to reveal the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between these two types of common reeds under different salinity conditions. The results showed that only three co-expressed genes were up-regulated and one co-expressed gene was down-regulated between the two reed types. On the other hand, 1,371 DEGs were exclusively up-regulated and 285 DEGs were exclusively down-regulated in the tidal reed compared to the control, while 115 DEGs were exclusively up-regulated and 118 DEGs were exclusively down-regulated in the freshwater reed compared to the control. From the pattern of enrichment of transcripts involved in salinity response, the tidal reed was more active and efficient in scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) than the freshwater reed, with the tidal reed showing significantly higher gene expression in oxidoreductase activity. Furthermore, when the reeds were exposed to salt stress, transcripts encoding glutathione metabolism were up-regulated in the tidal reed but not in the freshwater reed. DEGs related to encoding glutathione reductase (GR), glucose-6-phosphate 1-dehydrogenase (G6PDH), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PD), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and L-ascorbate peroxidase (LAP) were revealed as especially highly differentially regulated and therefore represented candidate genes that could be cloned into plants to improve salt tolerance. Overall, more genes were up-regulated in the tidal reed than in the freshwater reed from the Yellow River Delta when under salt stress. The tidal reed efficiently resisted salt stress by up-regulating genes encoding for oxidoreductase activity and glutathione metabolism. We suggest that this type of common reed could be extremely useful in the ecological restoration of degraded, high salinity coastal wetlands in priority.

Abstract Studying the carbon dynamics of estuarine sediment is crucial to understanding of carbon cycle in the coastal ocean. This study is to evaluate the mechanisms regulating the dynamics of organic (TOC) and inorganic carbon (TIC) in surface sediment of the Yellow River Estuary (YRE). Based on data of 15 surface sediment cores, we found that TIC (6.3–20.1 g kg−1) was much higher than TOC (0.2–4.4 g kg−1). Both TOC and TIC were generally higher to the north than to the south, primarily due to the differences in kinetic energy level (i.e., higher to the south). Our analysis suggested that TOC was mainly from marine sources in the YER, except in the southern shallow bay where approximately 75% of TOC was terrigenous. The overall low levels of TOC were due to profound resuspension that could cause enhanced decomposition. On the other hand, high levels of TIC resulted partly from higher rates of biological production, and partly from decomposition of TOC associated with sediment resuspension. The isotopic signiture in TIC seems to imply that the latter is dominant in forming more TIC in the YRE, and there may be transfer of OC to IC in the water column.

Spartina alterniflora is one of the most noxious invasive plants in China and many other regions. Exploring environmentally friendly, economic and effective techniques for controlling Spartina alterniflora is of great significance for the management of coastal wetlands. In the present study, different approaches, including mowing and waterlogging, mowing and tilling and herbicide application, were used to control Spartina alterniflora. The results suggest that the integrated approach of mowing and waterlogging could eradicate Spartina alterniflora, the herbicide haloxyfop-r-methyl could kill almost all the Spartina alterniflora, and the integrated approach of mowing and tilling at the end of the growing season was a perfect way to inhibit the germination of Spartina alterniflora in the following year. However, no matter which control approach is adopted, secondary invasion of Spartina alterniflora must be avoided. Otherwise, all the efforts will be wasted in a few years.

Fusarium fungi are soil-borne pathogens, and the pathological effects on plant photosystems remain unclear. This study aimed to deeply reveal pathological characterization in apple seedlings infected with Fusarium solani by investigating photosystems performance and interaction. Roots were immersed in conidial suspension for inoculation. Thereafter, prompt and delayed chlorophyll a fluorescence and modulated 820 nm reflection were simultaneously detected. After 30 days of infection, leaf relative water content and dry weight were remarkably decreased by 55.7 and 47.1%, suggesting that the infected seedlings were subjected to Fusarium-induced water deficit stress. PSI reaction center was more susceptible than PSII reaction center in infected seedlings due to greater decrease in the maximal photochemical efficiency of PSI than that of PSII, but PSI reaction center injury was aggravated slowly, as PSII injury could partly protect PSI by restricting electron donation. PSII donor and acceptor sides were also damaged after 20 days of infection, and the restricted electron donation induced PSII and PSI disconnection by blocking PSI re-reduction. In accordance with greater damage of PSI reaction center, PSI oxidation was also suppressed. Notably, significantly increased efficiency of electron transport from plastoquinone (PQ) to PSI acceptors (REo/ETo) after 20 days of infection suggested greater inhibition on PQ reduction than re-oxidation, and the protection for PSI acceptors might alleviate the reduction of electron transport efficiency beyond PQ upon damaged PSI reaction center. Lowered delayed fluorescence in microsecond domain verified PSII damage in infected seedlings, and elevated delayed fluorescence in sub-millisecond domain during PQ reduction process conformed to increased REo/ETo. In conclusion, F. solani infection depressed PSII and PSI performance and destroyed their coordination by inducing pathological wilting in apple seedlings. It may be a pathogenic mechanism of Fusarium to induce plant photosystems damage.

The aim of the study was to examine the role of root abscisic acid (ABA) in protecting photosystems and photosynthesis in Jerusalem artichoke against salt stress. Potted plants were pretreated by a specific ABA synthesis inhibitor sodium tungstate and then subjected to salt stress (150 mM NaCl). Tungstate did not directly affect root ABA content and photosynthetic parameters, whereas it inhibited root ABA accumulation and induced a greater decrease in photosynthetic rate under salt stress. The maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) significantly declined in tungstate-pretreated plants under salt stress, suggesting photosystem II (PSII) photoinhibition appeared. PSII photoinhibition did not prevent PSI photoinhibition by restricting electron donation, as the maximal photochemical efficiency of PSI (ΔMR/MR0) was lowered. In line with photoinhibition, elevated H2O2 concentration and lipid peroxidation corroborated salt-induced oxidative stress in tungstate-pretreated plants. Less decrease in ΔMR/MR0 and Fv/Fm indicated that PSII and PSI in non-pretreated plants could maintain better performance than tungstate-pretreated plants under salt stress. Consistently, greater reduction in PSII and PSI reaction center protein abundance confirmed the elevated vulnerability of photosystems to salt stress in tungstate-pretreated plants. Overall, the root ABA signal participated in defending the photosystem’s photoinhibition and protecting photosynthesis in Jerusalem artichoke under salt stress.

The tidal flat is one of the important components of coastal wetland systems in the Yellow River Delta (YRD). It can stabilize shorelines and protect coastal biodiversity. The erosion risk in tidal flats in coastal wetlands was seldom been studied. Characterizing changes of soil particle size distribution (PSD) is an important way to quantity soil erosion in tidal flats.Based on the fractal scale theory and network analysis, we determined the fractal characterizations (singular fractal dimension and multifractal dimension) soil PSD in a successional series of tidal flats in a coastal wetland in the YRD in eastern China. The results showed that the major soil texture was from silt loam to sandy loam. The values of fractal dimensions, ranging from 2.35 to 2.55, decreased from the low tidal flat to the high tidal flat. We also found that the percent of particles with size ranging between 0.4 and 126 μm was related with fractal dimensions. Tide played a great effort on soil PSD than vegetation by increasing soil organic matter (SOM) content and salinity in the coastal wetland in the YRD.Tidal flats in coastal wetlands in the YRD, especially low tidal flats, are facing the risk of soil erosion. This study will be essential to provide a firm basis for the coast erosion control and assessment, as well as wetland ecosystem restoration.

Land use changes from cropland to orchards in Eastern China have raised serious concerns about the regional nitrogen (N) cycle and greenhouse gas balance. We measured soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions and methane (CH4) uptake using manual static chambers in an apple orchard. The primary aims were to assess the effect of N fertilizer application on gas fluxes and quantify the site-specific N2O emission factor (EFd). Field experiments were arranged in a randomized block design with three N input rates (0, 800 and 2600/2000 kg N ha−1 year−1). We found that orchard soils were a negligible CH4 sink (−1.1 to −0.4 kg C ha−1 year−1). Annual N2O emissions responded positively to N input rates, ranging from 34.1 to 60.3 kg N ha−1 year−1. EFd ranged from 1.00% to 1.65% with a mean of 1.34%. The extremely large background emissions of N2O (34.1–34.3 kg N ha−1 year−1) most likely originated from nitrate accumulation in the soil profile because of historical overuse of N fertilizer. We conclude that (1) site-specific EFd is suitable for assessing regional direct N2O emissions from upland orchards; and (2) conventional fertilization regimes must be avoided, and reduced N input rates are recommended in the study region.

Saltmarsh is widely recognized as a blue carbon ecosystem with great carbon storage potential. Yet soil respiration with a major contributor of atmospheric CO2 can offset its carbon sink function. Up to date, mechanisms ruling CO2 emissions from saltmarsh soil remain unclear. In particular, the effect of precipitation on soil CO2 emissions is unclear in coastal wetlands, due the lack of outdoor data in real situations. We conducted a 7-year field manipulation experiment in a saltmarsh in the Yellow River Delta, China. Soil respiration in five treatments (-60%, -40%, +0%, +40%, and+ 60% of precipitation) was measured in the field. Topsoils from the last 3 years (2019-2021) were analyzed for CO2 production potential by microcosm experiments. Furthermore, quality and quantity of soil organic carbon and microbial function were tested. Results show that only the moderate precipitation rise of +40% induced a 66.2% increase of CO2 production potential for the microcosm experiments, whereas other data showed a weak impact. Consistently, soil respiration was also found to be strongest at +40%. The CO2 production potential is positively correlated with soil organic carbon, including carbon quantity and quality. But microbial diversity did not show any positive response to precipitation sizes. r-/K-strategy seemed to be a plausible explanation for biological factors. Overall, our finding reveal that a moderate precipitation increase, not decrease or a robust increase, in a saltmarsh is likely to improve soil organic carbon quality and quantity, and bacterial oligotroph:copiotroph ratio, ultimately leading to an enhanced CO2 production.
