Abstract

Assessing the stability of autonomous ships is challenging due to a lack of crew ensuring situational awareness, experience and good seamanship, which have contributed to safety of navigation to date. Therefore, a comprehensive approach towards evaluation of autonomous ship stability in each phase of operation is required. This problem is raised here with respect to the ship turning maneuver. A Direct Stability Assessment (DSA) inspired approach is applied. Therefore, a series of ship motion simulations are carried out to obtain the dynamic angle of heel for sample operational scenarios and numerous irregular wave realizations to enable identification of a stability failure. An up-to-date 6DoF ship dynamics model is utilized. The simulations account for both the maneuverability and stability characteristics of a vessel. A 56-m long training vessel is used as an example. The simulation results are statistically processed to elicit the maximum instantaneous angle of heel corresponding to a 5% probability of exceedance, to be compared to the assumed threshold. However, the required number of simulations ensuring the required statistical significance of the results remains an open question.

23. On the use of leading safety indicators in maritime and their feasibility for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships

Abstract

Although the safety of prospective Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships will largely depend on their ability to detect potential hazards and react to them, the contemporary scientific literature lacks the analysis of how to achieve this. This could be achieved through an application of leading safety indicators. The aim of the performed study was to identify the research directions of leading safety indicators in three safety-critical operational aspects of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships: collision avoidance, intact stability, and communication. To achieve this, literature review is performed, taking into account scientific documents including journal and conference papers. The results indicate that the need for establishing operational leading safety indicators is recognized by numerous scholars, who sometimes make suggestions of what the set of indicators shall consist of. Some leading safety indicators for autonomous vessels are readily identifiable in the scientific literature and used in current practice. However, the research effort is lacking a holistic approach to the issue.

Abstract

This paper introduces the concept of Collision Avoidance Dynamic Critical Area (CADCA) for onboard Decision Support Systems (DSS). The indicator proposed is derived via identification of a minimum required maneuvering zone in an encounter between two vessels. The CADCA model accounts for ship maneuvering dynamics and associated hydrodynamic actions emerging from different rudder angles and forward speed effects. The method presented is novel as it considers the variability of a critical area due to dynamic changes in operational parameters for both vessels. Results of the simulations carried out in negligible weather conditions confirm that computed zones may differ significantly in terms of shapes and limits. It is demonstrated that the size of the CADCA depends on the rudder angle, forward speed, as well as the dimensions of the vessels.

Abstract

Various endeavors are undertaken by the maritime industry, academia, and policy-makers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These include the search for feasible technologies that could be used onboard merchant vessels and are propelled by international legal and social initiatives. To this end, this study aimed to critically analyze the research trends pertaining to the active methods of reducing the negative environmental impact of shipping. The research is focused on alternative fuels and renewable energy systems with respect to the related policy-making and existing legal framework. Therefore, a bibliometric approach was applied to a sample of 234 scientific papers indexed in the SCI-EXPANDED in Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Core Collection. The results indicate that the scientific efforts were made more on alternative fuels, while renewable energy sources only recently became a popular research subject. Moreover, the environmental benefits of prospective technologies are more investigated than their financial aspects. The research effort on alternative maritime fuels was made in parallel with the legal one, both aiming to combat global climate change and magnifying each other. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
