Photonic lanterns are waveguide devices enabling high throughput single mode spectroscopy and high angular resolution. We aim to present the first on-sky demonstration of a photonic lantern (PL) operating in visible light, to measure its throughput and assess its potential for high-resolution spectroscopy of compact objects. We used the SCExAO instrument (a double stage extreme AO system installed at the Subaru telescope) and FIRST mid-resolution spectrograph (R 3000) to test the visible capabilities of the PL on internal source and on-sky observations. The best averaged coupling efficiency over the PL field of view was measured at 51% +/- 10% with a peak at 80%. We also investigate the relationship between coupling efficiency and the Strehl ratio for a PL, comparing them with those of a single-mode fiber (SMF). Findings show that in the AO regime, a PL offers better coupling efficiency performance than a SMF, especially in the presence of low spatial frequency aberrations. We observed Ikiiki (alpha Leo - mR = 1.37) and `Aua (alpha Ori - mR = -1.17) at a frame rate of 200 Hz. Under median seeing conditions (about 1 arcsec measured in H band) and large tip/tilt residuals (over 20 mas), we estimated an average light coupling efficiency of 14.5% +/- 7.4%, with a maximum of 42.8% at 680 nm. We were able to reconstruct both star's spectra, containing various absorption lines. The successful demonstration of this device opens new possibilities in terms of high throughput single-mode fiber-fed spectroscopy in the Visible. The demonstrated on-sky coupling efficiency performance would not have been achievable with a single SMF injection setup under similar conditions, partly because the residual tip/tilt alone exceeded the field of view of a visible SMF (18 mas at 700 nm). A Photonic Lantern (PL) is a novel device that efficiently converts a multi-mode fiber into several single-mode fibers. When coupled with an extreme adaptive optics (ExAO) system and a spectrograph, PLs enable high throughput spectroscopy at high angular resolution. The Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics (SCExAO) system of the Subaru Telescope recently acquired a PL that converts its multi-mode input into 19 single-mode outputs. The single mode outputs feed a R~4,000 spectrograph optimized for the 600 to 760 nm wavelength range. We present here the integration of the PL on SCExAO, and study the device performance in terms of throughput, field of view, and spectral reconstruction. We also present the first on-sky demonstration of a Visible PL coupled with an ExAO system, showing a significant improvement of x12 in throughput compared to the use of a sole single-mode fiber. Broadband low-resolution near-infrared spectrographs in a compact form are crucial for ground- and space-based astronomy and other fields of sensing. Astronomical spectroscopy poses stringent requirements including high efficiency, broad band operation ($>$ 300 nm), and in some cases, polarization insensitivity. We present and compare experimental results from the design, fabrication, and characterization of broadband (1200 - 1650 nm) arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) spectrographs built using the two most promising low-loss platforms - Si$_3$N$_4$ (rectangular waveguides) and doped-SiO$_2$ (square waveguides). These AWGs have a resolving power ($\lambda/\Delta\lambda$) of ~200, a free spectral range of ~ 200-350 nm, and a small footprint of ~ 50-100 mm$^2$. The peak overall (fiber-chip-fiber) efficiency of the doped-SiO$_2$ AWG was ~ 79\% (1 dB), and it exhibited a negligible polarization-dependent shift compared to the channel spacing. For Si$_3$N$_4$ AWGs, the peak overall efficiency in TE mode was ~ 50\% (3 dB), and the main loss component was found to be fiber-to-chip coupling losses. Photonic lantern nulling (PLN) is a method for enabling the detection and characterization of close-in exoplanets by exploiting the symmetries of the ports of a mode-selective photonic lantern (MSPL) to cancel out starlight. A six-port MSPL provides four ports where on-axis starlight is suppressed, while off-axis planet light is coupled with efficiencies that vary as a function of the planet's spatial position. We characterize the properties of a six-port MSPL in the laboratory and perform the first testbed demonstration of the PLN in monochromatic light (1569 nm) and in broadband light (1450 nm to 1625 nm), each using two orthogonal polarizations. We compare the measured spatial throughput maps with those predicted by simulations using the lantern's modes. We find that the morphologies of the measured throughput maps are reproduced by the simulations, though the real lantern is lossy and has lower throughputs overall. The measured ratios of on-axis stellar leakage to peak off-axis throughput are around 10^(-2), likely limited by testbed wavefront errors. These null-depths are already sufficient for observing young gas giants at the diffraction limit using ground-based observatories. High-resolution astronomical spectroscopy carried out with a photonic Fourier transform spectrograph (FTS) requires long asymmetrical optical delay lines that can be dynamically tuned. For example, to achieve a spectral resolution of R = 30,000, a delay line as long as 1.5 cm would be required. Such delays are inherently prone to phase errors caused by temperature fluctuations. This is due to the relatively large thermo-optic coefficient and long lengths of the waveguides, in this case composed of SiN, resulting in thermally dependent changes to the optical path length. To minimize phase error to the order of 0.05 radians, thermal stability of the order of 0.05{\deg} C is necessary. A thermal control system capable of stability such as this would require a fast thermal response and minimal overshoot/undershoot. With a PID temperature control loop driven by a Peltier cooler and thermistor, we minimized interference fringe phase error to +/- 0.025 radians and achieved temperature stability on the order of 0.05{\deg} C. We present a practical system for precision temperature control of a foundry-fabricated and packaged FTS device on a SiN platform with delay lines ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 cm in length using inexpensive off-the-shelf components, including design details, control loop optimization, and considerations for thermal control of integrated photonics.

Photonic lanterns (PLs) are tapered waveguides that gradually transition from a multi-mode fiber geometry to a bundle of single-mode fibers. In astronomical applications, PLs can efficiently couple multi-mode telescope light into a multi-mode fiber entrance and convert it into multiple single-mode beams. The output beams are highly stable and suitable for feeding into high-resolution spectrographs or photonic chip beam combiners. For instance, by using relative intensities in the output cores as a function of wavelength, PLs can enable spectroastrometry. In addition, by interfering beams in the output cores with a beam combiner in the backend, PLs can be used for high-throughput interferometric imaging. When used on an Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), with its increased sensitivity and angular resolution, the imaging and spectroastrometric capabilities of PLs will be extended to higher contrast and smaller angular scales. Photonics offer numerous functionalities that can be used to realize astrophotonic instruments. The most spectacular example to date is the ESO Gravity instrument at the Very Large Telescope in Chile. Integrated astrophotonic devices stand to offer critical advantages for instrument development, including extreme miniaturization, as well as integration, superior thermal and mechanical stabilization owing to the small footprint, and high replicability offering cost savings. Numerous astrophotonic technologies have been developed to address shortcomings of conventional instruments to date, including for example the development of photonic lanterns, complex aperiodic fiber Bragg gratings, complex beam combiners to enable long baseline interferometry, and laser frequency combs for high precision spectral calibration of spectrometers. Despite these successes, the facility implementation of photonic solutions in astronomical instrumentation is currently limited because of (1) low throughputs from coupling to fibers, coupling fibers to chips, propagation and bend losses, device losses, etc, (2) difficulties with scaling to large channel count devices needed for large bandwidths and high resolutions, and (3) efficient integration of photonics with detectors, to name a few. In this roadmap, we identify 24 areas that need further development. We outline the challenges and advances needed across those areas covering design tools, simulation capabilities, fabrication processes, the need for entirely new components, integration and hybridization and the characterization of devices. To realize these advances the astrophotonics community will have to work cooperatively with industrial partners who have more advanced manufacturing capabilities. Astrophysical research into exoplanets has delivered thousands of confirmed planets orbiting distant stars. These planets span a wide ranges of size and composition, with diversity also being the hallmark of system configurations, the great majority of which do not resemble our own solar system. Unfortunately, only a handful of the known planets have been characterized spectroscopically thus far, leaving a gaping void in our understanding of planetary formation processes and planetary types. To make progress, astronomers studying exoplanets will need new and innovative technical solutions. Astrophotonics -- an emerging field focused on the application of photonic technologies to observational astronomy -- provides one promising avenue forward. FIRST is a post Extreme Adaptive-Optics (ExAO) spectro-interferometer operating in the Visible (600-800 nm, R~400). Its exquisite angular resolution (a sensitivity analysis of on-sky data shows that bright companions can be detected down to 0.25lambda/D) combined with its sensitivity to pupil phase discontinuities (from a few nm up to dozens of microns) makes FIRST an ideal self-calibrated solution for enabling exoplanet detection and characterization in the future. Spectral shaping is critical to many fields of science. In astronomy for example, the detection of exoplanets via the Doppler effect hinges on the ability to calibrate a high resolution spectrograph. Laser frequency combs can be used for this, but the wildly varying intensity across the spectrum can make it impossible to optimally utilize the entire comb, leading to a reduced overall precision of calibration. To circumvent this, astronomical applications of laser frequency combs rely on a bulk optic setup which can flatten the output spectrum before sending it to the spectrograph. Such flatteners require complex and expensive optical elements like spatial light modulators and have non-negligible bench top footprints. Here we present an alternative in the form of an all-photonic spectral shaper that can be used to flatten the spectrum of a laser frequency comb. The device consists of a circuit etched into a silicon nitride wafer that supports an arrayed-waveguide grating to disperse the light over hundreds of nanometers in wavelength, followed by Mach-Zehnder interferometers to control the amplitude of each channel, thermo-optic phase modulators to phase the channels and a second arrayed-waveguide grating to recombine the spectrum. The demonstrator device operates from 1400 to 1800 nm (covering the astronomical H band), with twenty 20 nm wide channels. The device allows for nearly 40 dBs of dynamic modulation of the spectrum via the Mach-Zehnders , which is greater than that offered by most spatial light modulators. With a superluminescent diode, we reduced the static spectral variation to ~3 dB, limited by the properties of the components used in the circuit and on a laser frequency comb we managed to reduce the modulation to 5 dBs, sufficient for astronomical applications., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2209.09455

Laser frequency combs are fast becoming critical to reaching the highest radial velocity precisions. One shortcoming is the highly variable brightness of the comb lines across the spectrum (up to 4-5 orders of magnitude). This can result in some lines saturating while others are at low signal and lost in the noise. Losing lines to either of these effects reduces the precision and hence effectiveness of the comb. In addition, the brightness of the comb lines can vary with time which could drive comb lines with initially reasonable SNR's into the two regimes described above. To mitigate these two effects, laser frequency combs use optical flattener's. Flattener's are typically bulk optic setups that disperse the comb light with a grating, and then use a spatial light modulator to control the amplitude across the spectrum before recombining the light into another single mode fiber and sending it to the spectrograph. These setups can be large (small bench top), expensive (several hundred thousand dollars) and have limited stability. To address these issues, we have developed an all-photonic spectrum flattener on a chip. The device is constructed from optical waveguides on a SiN chip. The light from the laser frequency comb's output optical fiber can be directly connected to the chip, where the light is first dispersed using an arrayed waveguide grating. To control the brightness of each channel, the light is passed through a Mach-Zehnder interferometer before being recombined with a second arrayed waveguide grating. Thermo-optic phase modulators are used in each channel before recombination to path length match the channels as needed. Here we present the results from our first generation prototype. Coronagraphs allow for faint off-axis exoplanets to be observed, but are limited to angular separations greater than a few beam widths. Accessing closer-in separations would greatly increase the expected number of detectable planets, which scales inversely with the inner working angle. The Vortex Fiber Nuller (VFN) is an instrument concept designed to characterize exoplanets within a single beam-width. It requires few optical elements and is compatible with many coronagraph designs as a complementary characterization tool. However, the peak throughput for planet light is limited to about 20%, and the measurement places poor constraints on the planet location and flux ratio. We propose to augment the VFN design by replacing its single-mode fiber with a six-port mode-selective photonic lantern, retaining the original functionality while providing several additional ports that reject starlight but couple planet light. We show that the photonic lantern can also be used as a nuller without a vortex. We present monochromatic simulations characterizing the response of the Photonic Lantern Nuller (PLN) to astrophysical signals and wavefront errors, and show that combining exoplanet flux from the nulled ports significantly increases the overall throughput of the instrument. We show using synthetically generated data that the PLN detects exoplanets more effectively than the VFN. Furthermore, with the PLN, the exoplanet can be partially localized, and its flux ratio constrained. A significant fraction (30\%) of well-localized short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) lack a coincident host galaxy. This leads to two main scenarios: \textit{i}) that the progenitor system merged outside of the visible light of its host, or \textit{ii}) that the sGRB resided within a faint and distant galaxy that was not detected by follow-up observations. Discriminating between these scenarios has important implications for constraining the formation channels of neutron star mergers, the rate and environments of gravitational wave sources, and the production of heavy elements in the Universe. In this work, we present the results of our observing campaign targeted at 31 sGRBs that lack a putative host galaxy. Our study effectively doubles the sample of well-studied sGRB host galaxies, now totaling 72 events of which $28\%$ lack a coincident host to deep limits ($r$\,$\gtrsim$\,$26$ or $F110W$\,$\gtrsim$\,$27$ AB mag), and represents the largest homogeneously selected catalog of sGRB offsets to date. We find that 70\% of sub-arcsecond localized sGRBs occur within 10 kpc of their host's nucleus, with a median projected physical offset of $5.6$ kpc. Using this larger population, we discover an apparent redshift evolution in their locations: bursts at low-$z$ occur at $2\times$ larger offsets compared to those at $z$\,$>$\,$0.5$. This evolution could be due to a physical evolution of the host galaxies themselves or a bias against faint high-$z$ galaxies. Furthermore, we discover a sample of hostless sGRBs at $z$\,$\gtrsim$\,$1$ that are indicative of a larger high-$z$ population, constraining the redshift distribution and disfavoring log-normal delay time models., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) triggers on-board in response to $\sim$ 40 short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) per year; however, their large localization regions have made the search for optical counterparts a challenging endeavour. We have developed and executed an extensive program with the wide field of view of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) camera, mounted on the Palomar 48 inch Oschin telescope (P48), to perform target-of-opportunity (ToO) observations on 10 Fermi-GBM SGRBs during 2018 and 2020-2021. Bridging the large sky areas with small field of view optical telescopes in order to track the evolution of potential candidates, we look for the elusive SGRB afterglows and kilonovae (KNe) associated with these high-energy events. No counterpart has yet been found, even though more than 10 ground based telescopes, part of the Global Relay of Observatories Watching Transients Happen (GROWTH) network, have taken part in these efforts. The candidate selection procedure and the follow-up strategy have shown that ZTF is an efficient instrument for searching for poorly localized SGRBs, retrieving a reasonable number of candidates to follow-up and showing promising capabilities as the community approaches the multi-messenger era. Based on the median limiting magnitude of ZTF, our searches would have been able to retrieve a GW170817-like event up to $\sim$ 200 Mpc and SGRB afterglows to z = 0.16 or 0.4, depending on the assumed underlying energy model. Future ToOs will expand the horizon to z = 0.2 and 0.7 respectively.

Photonic spectrographs offer a highly miniaturized, flexible, and stable on-chip solution for astronomical spectroscopy and can be used for various science cases such as determining the atmospheric composition of exoplanets to understand their habitability, formation, and evolution. Arrayed Waveguide Gratings (AWGs) have shown the best promise to be used as an astrophotonic spectrograph. We developed a publically-available tool to conduct a preliminary examination of the capability of the AWGs in spectrally resolving exoplanet atmospheres. We derived the Line-Spread-Function (LSF) as a function of wavelength and the Full-Width-at-Half-Maximum (FWHM) of the LSF as a function of spectral line width to evaluate the response of a discretely- and continuously-sampled low-resolution AWG (R $\sim$ 1000). We observed that the LSF has minimal wavelength dependence ($\sim$5\%), irrespective of the offset with respect to the center-wavelengths of the AWG channels, contrary to the previous assumptions. We further confirmed that the observed FWHM scales linearly with the emission line width. Finally, we present simulated extraction of a sample molecular absorption spectrum with the discretely- and continuously-sampled low-resolution AWGs. From this, we show that while the discrete AWG matches its expected resolving power, the continuous AWG spectrograph can, in principle, achieve an effective resolution significantly greater ($\sim$ 2x) than the discrete AWG. Here, we present an astrophotonic spectrograph in the near-IR H-band (1.45 -1.65 $\mu m$) and a spectral resolution ($\lambda/\delta\lambda$) of 1500. The main dispersing element of the spectrograph is a photonic chip based on Arrayed-Waveguide-Grating technology. The 1D spectrum produced on the focal plane of the AWG contains overlapping spectral orders, each spanning a 10 nm band in wavelength. These spectral orders are cross-dispersed in the perpendicular direction using a cross-dispersion setup which consists of collimating lenses and a prism and the 2D spectrum is thus imaged onto a near-IR detector. Here, as a proof of concept, we use a few-mode photonic lantern to capture the light and feed the emanating single-mode outputs to the AWG chip for dispersion. The total size of the setup is 50$\times$30$\times$20 cm$^3$, nearly the size of a shoebox. With the upcoming extremely large telescopes (ELTs), the volume, mass, and cost of the associated spectrographs will scale with the telescope diameter. Astrophotonics offers a unique solution to this problem in the form of single-mode fiber-fed diffraction-limited spectrographs on a chip. These highly miniaturized chips offer great flexibility in terms of coherent manipulation of photons. Such photonic spectrographs are well-suited to disperse the light from directly imaged planets (post-coronagraph, collected using a single-mode fiber) to characterize exoplanet atmospheres. Here we present the results from a proof-of-concept high-resolution astrophotonic spectrograph using the arrayed waveguide gratings (AWG) architecture. This chip uses the low-loss SiN platform (SiN core, SiO$_2$ cladding) with square waveguides (800 nm $\times$ 800 nm). The AWG has a measured resolving power ($\lambda/\delta\lambda$) of $\sim$ 12,000 and a free spectral range (FSR) of 2.8 nm. While the FSR is small, the chip operates over a broad band (1200 $-$ 1700 nm). The peak on-chip throughput (excluding the coupling efficiency) is $\sim$40\% (- 4 dB) and the overall throughput (including the coupling loss) is $\sim$ 11\% (- 9.6 dB) in the TE mode. Thanks to the high-confinement waveguide geometry, the chip is highly miniaturized with a size of only 7.4 mm $\times$ 2 mm. Tidal disruption events (TDEs) offer a unique way to study dormant black holes. While the number of observed TDEs has grown thanks to the emergence of wide-field surveys in the past few decades, questions regarding the nature of the observed optical, UV, and X-ray emission remain. We present a uniformly selected sample of 30 spectroscopically classified TDEs from the Zwicky Transient Facility Phase I survey operations with follow-up \textit{Swift} UV and X-ray observations. Through our investigation into correlations between light curve properties, we recover a shallow positive correlation between the peak bolometric luminosity and decay timescales. We introduce a new spectroscopic class of TDE, TDE-featureless, which are characterized by featureless optical spectra. The new TDE-featureless class shows larger peak bolometric luminosities, peak blackbody temperatures, and peak blackbody radii. We examine the differences between the X-ray bright and X-ray faint populations of TDEs in this sample, finding that X-ray bright TDEs show higher peak blackbody luminosities than the X-ray faint sub-sample. This sample of optically selected TDEs is the largest sample of TDEs from a single survey yet, and the systematic discovery, classification, and follow-up of this sample allows for robust characterization of TDE properties, an important stepping stone looking forward toward the Rubin era., Comment: 44 pages, 22 figures, 9 tables, accepted to ApJ

Integrated photonic spectrographs offer an avenue to extreme miniaturization of astronomical instruments, which would greatly benefit extremely large telescopes and future space missions. These devices first require optimization for astronomical applications, which includes design, fabrication and field-testing. Given the high costs of photonic fabrication, Multi-Project Wafer (MPW) SiN offerings, where a user purchases a portion of a wafer, provide a convenient and affordable avenue to develop this technology. In this work we study the potential of two commonly used SiN waveguide geometries by MPW foundries, i.e. square and rectangular profiles to determine how they affect the performance of mid-high resolution arrayed waveguide grating spectrometers around 1.5 $\mu$m. Specifically, we present results from detailed simulations on the mode sizes, shapes, and polarization properties, and on the impact of phase errors on the throughput and cross talk as well as some laboratory results of coupling and propagation losses. From the MPW-run tolerances and our phase-error study, we estimate that an AWG with R $\sim$ 10,000 can be developed with the MPW runs and even greater resolving power is achievable with more reliable, dedicated fabrication runs. Depending on the fabrication and design optimizations, it is possible to achieve throughputs $\sim 60\%$ using the SiN platform. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are among the brightest and most energetic events in the universe. The duration and hardness distribution of GRBs has two clusters, now understood to reflect (at least) two different progenitors. Short-hard GRBs (SGRBs; T90 <2 s) arise from compact binary mergers, while long-soft GRBs (LGRBs; T90 >2 s) have been attributed to the collapse of peculiar massive stars (collapsars). The discovery of SN 1998bw/GRB 980425 marked the first association of a LGRB with a collapsar and AT 2017gfo/GRB 170817A/GW170817 marked the first association of a SGRB with a binary neutron star merger, producing also gravitational wave (GW). Here, we present the discovery of ZTF20abwysqy (AT2020scz), a fast-fading optical transient in the Fermi Satellite and the InterPlanetary Network (IPN) localization regions of GRB 200826A; X-ray and radio emission further confirm that this is the afterglow. Follow-up imaging (at rest-frame 16.5 days) reveals excess emission above the afterglow that cannot be explained as an underlying kilonova (KN), but is consistent with being the supernova (SN). Despite the GRB duration being short (rest-frame T90 of 0.65 s), our panchromatic follow-up data confirms a collapsar origin. GRB 200826A is the shortest LGRB found with an associated collapsar; it appears to sit on the brink between a successful and a failed collapsar. We present a detailed multi-wavelength analysis of two short Gamma-Ray Bursts (sGRBs) detected by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory: GRB 160624A at $z=0.483$ and GRB 200522A at $z=0.554$. These sGRBs demonstrate very different properties in their observed emission and environment. GRB 160624A is associated to a late-type galaxy with an old stellar population ($\approx$3 Gyr) and moderate on-going star formation ($\approx$1 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$). Hubble and Gemini limits on optical/nIR emission from GRB 160624A are among the most stringent for sGRBs, leading to tight constraints on the allowed kilonova properties. In particular, we rule out any kilonova brighter than AT2017gfo, disfavoring large masses of wind ejecta ($\lesssim$0.03 $M_\odot$). In contrast, observations of GRB 200522A uncovered a luminous ($L_\textrm{F125W}\approx 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at 2.3~d) and red ($r-H\approx 1.3$ mag) counterpart. The red color can be explained either by bright kilonova emission powered by the radioactive decay of a large amount of wind ejecta (0.03 $M_\odot$ $\lesssim$ $M$ $\lesssim$ 0.1 $M_\odot$) or moderate extinction, $E(B-V)\approx0.1-0.2$ mag, along the line of sight. The location of this sGRB in the inner regions of a young ($\approx$0.1 Gyr) star-forming ($\approx$2-6 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$) galaxy and the limited sampling of its counterpart do not allow us to rule out dust effects as contributing, at least in part, to the red color., Comment: MNRAS, In Press

We use a sample of 27 GRBs at redshift $z=2-6$ to probe the outflows in their respective host galaxies ($\mathrm{log(M_*/M_{\odot})}~\sim~9-11$) and search for possible relations between the outflow properties and those of the host galaxies such as $\mathrm{M_*}$, SFR, and specific SFR. First, we consider three outflow properties $-$ outflow column density ($\mathrm{N_{out}}$), maximum outflow velocity ($\mathrm{V_{max}}$), and normalized maximum velocity ($\mathrm{V_{norm}}$ = $\mathrm{V_{max}/V_{circ, halo}}$, where $\mathrm{V_{circ,halo}}$ is the halo circular velocity). We observe clear trends of $\mathrm{N_{out}}$ and $\mathrm{V_{max}}$ with increasing SFR in high-ion-traced outflows, with a stronger ($>~3\sigma$) $\mathrm{V_{max}}-$SFR correlation. We find that the estimated mass outflow rate and momentum flux of the high-ion outflows scale with SFR and can be supported by the momentum imparted by star formation (supernovae and stellar winds). The kinematic correlations of high-ion-traced outflows with SFR are similar to those observed for star-forming galaxies at low redshifts. The correlations with SFR are weaker in low-ions. This, along with the lower detection fraction in low-ions, indicates that the outflow is primarily high-ion dominated. We also observe a strong ($>~3\sigma$) trend of normalized velocity ($\mathrm{V_{norm}}$) decreasing with halo mass and increasing with sSFR, suggesting that outflows from low-mass halos and high-sSFR galaxies are most likely to escape and enrich the outer CGM and IGM with metals. By comparing the CGM-GRB stacks with those of starbursts at $z\sim2$ and $z\sim0.1$, we find that over a broad redshift range, the outflow strength strongly depends on the main-sequence offset at the respective redshifts rather than simply the SFR., Comment: Published in Astrophysical Journal, 28 pages, 20 figures. We report on our observing campaign of the compact binary merger GW190814, detected by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors on August 14th, 2019. This signal has the best localisation of any observed gravitational wave (GW) source, with a 90% probability area of 18.5 deg$^2$, and an estimated distance of ~ 240 Mpc. We obtained wide-field observations with the Deca-Degree Optical Transient Imager (DDOTI) covering 88% of the probability area down to a limiting magnitude of $w$ = 19.9 AB. Nearby galaxies within the high probability region were targeted with the Lowell Discovery Telescope (LDT), whereas promising candidate counterparts were characterized through multi-colour photometry with the Reionization and Transients InfraRed (RATIR) and spectroscopy with the Gran Telescopio de Canarias (GTC). We use our optical and near-infrared limits in conjunction with the upper limits obtained by the community to constrain the possible electromagnetic counterparts associated with the merger. A gamma-ray burst seen along its jet's axis is disfavoured by the multi-wavelength dataset, whereas the presence of a burst seen at larger viewing angles is not well constrained. Although our observations are not sensitive to a kilonova similar to AT2017gfo, we can rule out high-mass (> 0.1 M$_{\odot}$) fast-moving (mean velocity >= 0.3c) wind ejecta for a possible kilonova associated with this merger., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables; updated acknowledgement section. We present a systematic search for optical counterparts to 13 gravitational wave (GW) triggers involving at least one neutron star during LIGO/Virgo's third observing run. We searched binary neutron star (BNS) and neutron star black hole (NSBH) merger localizations with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and undertook follow-up with the Global Relay of Observatories Watching Transients Happen (GROWTH) collaboration. The GW triggers had a median localization of 4480 deg^2, median distance of 267 Mpc and false alarm rates ranging from 1.5 to 1e-25 per yr. The ZTF coverage had a median enclosed probability of 39%, median depth of 20.8mag, and median response time of 1.5 hr. The O3 follow-up by the GROWTH team comprised 340 UVOIR photometric points, 64 OIR spectra, and 3 radio. We find no promising kilonova (radioactivity-powered counterpart) and we convert the upper limits to constrain the underlying kilonova luminosity function. Assuming that all kilonovae are at least as luminous as GW170817 at discovery (-16.1mag), we calculate our joint probability of detecting zero kilonovae is only 4.2%. If we assume that all kilonovae are brighter than -16.6mag (extrapolated peak magnitude of GW170817) and fade at 1 mag/day (similar to GW170817), the joint probability of zero detections is 7%. If we separate the NSBH and BNS populations, the joint probability of zero detections, assuming all kilonovae are brighter than -16.6mag, is 9.7% for NSBH and 7.9% for BNS mergers. Moreover, <57% (<89%) of putative kilonovae could be brighter than -16.6mag assuming flat (fading) evolution, at 90% confidence. If we further account for the online terrestrial probability for each GW trigger, we find that <68% of putative kilonovae could be brighter than -16.6mag. Comparing to model grids, we find that some kilonovae must have Mej < 0.03 Msun or Xlan>1e-4 or phi>30deg to be consistent with our limits. (Abridged), Comment: Submitted to ApJ

It is not clear whether gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are unbiased tracers of cosmic star formation at $z > 2$. Since dusty starburst galaxies are significant contributors to the cosmic star formation at these redshifts, they should form a major part of the GRB host population. However, recent studies at $z \leq 2$ have shown that the majority of the star formation activity in GRB hosts is not obscured by dust. Here, we investigate the galaxy-scale dust obscuration in $z \sim 2-3.5$ GRB hosts pre-selected to have high-resolution, high signal-to-noise afterglow spectra in the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) and thus relatively low line-of-sight dust obscuration. We present new deep VLA observations of four GRB hosts, and compare the radio-based (upper limits on the) "total" star formation rates (SFRs) to the "unobscured" SFRs derived from fits to the optical-UV spectral energy distribution. The fraction of the total SFR that is obscured by dust in these galaxies is found to be $<$ 90% in general, and $\lesssim$ 50% for GRB 021004 in particular. These observations suggest that $z \sim 2-3.5$ GRBs with UV-unobscured sightlines originate in star-forming galaxies with low overall dust obscuration, unlike the dusty starburst population., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication at The Astrophysical Journal

On 2019 August 14, the Advanced LIGO and Virgo interferometers detected the high-significance gravitational wave (GW) signal S190814bv. The GW data indicated that the event resulted from a neutron star--black hole (NSBH) merger, or potentially a low-mass binary black hole merger. Due to the low false alarm rate and the precise localization (23 deg$^2$ at 90\%), S190814bv presented the community with the best opportunity yet to directly observe an optical/near-infrared counterpart to a NSBH merger. To search for potential counterparts, the GROWTH collaboration performed real-time image subtraction on 6 nights of public Dark Energy Camera (DECam) images acquired in the three weeks following the merger, covering $>$98\% of the localization probability. Using a worldwide network of follow-up facilities, we systematically undertook spectroscopy and imaging of optical counterpart candidates. Combining these data with a photometric redshift catalog, we ruled out each candidate as the counterpart to S190814bv and we placed deep, uniform limits on the optical emission associated with S190814bv. For the nearest consistent GW distance, radiative transfer simulations of NSBH mergers constrain the ejecta mass of S190814bv to be $M_\mathrm{ej} < 0.04$~$M_{\odot}$ at polar viewing angles, or $M_\mathrm{ej} < 0.03$~$M_{\odot}$ if the opacity is $\kappa < 2$~cm$^2$g$^{-1}$. Assuming a tidal deformability for the neutron star at the high end of the range compatible with GW170817 results, our limits would constrain the BH spin component aligned with the orbital momentum to be $ \chi < 0.7$ for mass ratios $Q < 6$, with weaker constraints for more compact neutron stars. Early-time observations of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are essential to constrain their progenitor properties. In this paper, we present high-quality light curves of 127 SNe Ia discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) in 2018. We describe our method to perform forced point spread function (PSF) photometry, which can be applied to other types of extragalactic transients. With a planned cadence of six observations per night ($3g+3r$), all of the 127 SNe Ia are detected in both $g$ and $r$ band more than 10\,d (in the rest frame) prior to the epoch of $g$-band maximum light. The redshifts of these objects range from $z=0.0181$ to 0.165; the median redshift is 0.074. Among the 127 SNe, 50 are detected at least 14\,d prior to maximum light (in the rest frame), with a subset of 9 objects being detected more than 17\,d before $g$-band peak. This is the largest sample of young SNe Ia collected to date; it can be used to study the shape and color evolution of the rising light curves in unprecedented detail. We discuss six peculiar events in this sample, including one 02cx-like event ZTF18abclfee (SN\,2018crl), one Ia-CSM SN ZTF18aaykjei (SN\,2018cxk), and four objects with possible super-Chandrasekhar mass progenitors: ZTF18abhpgje (SN\,2018eul), ZTF18abdpvnd (SN\,2018dvf), ZTF18aawpcel (SN\,2018cir) and ZTF18abddmrf (SN\,2018dsx)., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

The third observing run by LVC has brought the discovery of many compact binary coalescences. Following the detection of the first binary neutron star merger in this run (LIGO/Virgo S190425z), we performed a dedicated follow-up campaign with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and Palomar Gattini-IR telescopes. The initial skymap of this single-detector gravitational wave (GW) trigger spanned most of the sky observable from Palomar Observatory. Covering 8000 deg$^2$ of the initial skymap over the next two nights, corresponding to 46\% integrated probability, ZTF system achieved a depth of $\approx$\,21 $m_\textrm{AB}$ in $g$- and $r$-bands. Palomar Gattini-IR covered 2200 square degrees in $J$-band to a depth of 15.5\,mag, including 32\% integrated probability based on the initial sky map. The revised skymap issued the following day reduced these numbers to 21\% for the Zwicky Transient Facility and 19\% for Palomar Gattini-IR. We narrowed 338,646 ZTF transient "alerts" over the first two nights of observations to 15 candidate counterparts. Two candidates, ZTF19aarykkb and ZTF19aarzaod, were particularly compelling given that their location, distance, and age were consistent with the GW event, and their early optical lightcurves were photometrically consistent with that of kilonovae. These two candidates were spectroscopically classified as young core-collapse supernovae. The remaining candidates were ruled-out as supernovae. Palomar Gattini-IR did not identify any viable candidates with multiple detections only after merger time. We demonstrate that even with single-detector GW events localized to thousands of square degrees, systematic kilonova discovery is feasible.

The fields of Astronomy and Astrophysics are technology limited, where the advent and application of new technologies to astronomy usher in a flood of discoveries altering our understanding of the Universe (e.g., recent cases include LIGO and the GRAVITY instrument at the VLTI). Currently, the field of astronomical spectroscopy is rapidly approaching an impasse: the size and cost of instruments, especially multi-object and integral field spectrographs for extremely large telescopes (ELTs), are pushing the limits of what is feasible, requiring optical components at the very edge of achievable size and performance. For these reasons, astronomers are increasingly looking for innovative solutions like photonic technologies that promote instrument miniaturization and simplification, while providing superior performance. Astronomers have long been aware of the potential of photonic technologies. The goal of this white paper is to draw attention to key photonic technologies and developments over the past two decades and demonstrate there is new momentum in this arena. We outline where the most critical efforts should be focused over the coming decade in order to move towards realizing a fully photonic instrument. A relatively small investment in this technology will advance astronomical photonics to a level where it can reliably be used to solve challenging instrument design limitations. Recent studies have revealed a dynamic interplay between the galaxy ecosystem and the circumgalactic medium (CGM). We investigate the CGM at high redshifts (z $\gtrsim$ 2) by using bright afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRB) as background sources. We compiled a sample of medium-resolution ($\delta$v $<$ 50 km/s) and high signal-to-noise (typical SNR $\sim$ 10) spectra from 27 GRB afterglows covering z $\sim$ 2 - 6, with six of them at z $\gtrsim$ 4. We analyzed the high- and low-ionization absorption features within $\pm$400 km/s to extract the CGM and ISM kinematics. In the stacked spectra, high-ionization absorption profiles (e.g. C IV, Si IV) present significant absorption excess in their blue wings (v $<$ -100 km/s) relative to the red wings (v $>$ 100 km/s). The stronger blue wings in high-ionization species are indicative of the presence of ubiquitous warm outflows in the GRB hosts at high redshifts. We used simple toy models to kinematically distinguish the CGM and ISM absorption and estimate the CGM mass and outflow velocity. We find tentative evidence of the evolution of the CGM metal mass by $\sim$ 0.5 dex between two redshift bins, each spanning 1 Gyr, z1: 2-2.7 and z2: 2.7-5. By comparing with past studies, we find that over the course of evolution of present-day galaxies with $M_{*} > 10^{10}M_{\odot}$, the ratio of C IV mass in the CGM to the stellar mass remains fairly uniform, with $log(M_{CIV}/M_{*}) \sim -4.5$ within $\pm$0.5 dex from z $\sim$ 4 to z $\sim$ 0, suggesting CGM-galaxy co-evolution., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, 49 pages, 43 figures

Astrophotonics is the application of versatile photonic technologies to channel, manipulate, and disperse guided light from one or more telescopes to achieve scientific objectives in astronomy in an efficient and cost-effective way. The developments and demands from the telecommunication industry have driven a major boost in photonic technology and vice versa in the last 40 years. The photonic platform of guided light in fibers and waveguides has opened the doors to next-generation instrumentation for both ground- and space-based telescopes in optical and near/mid-IR bands, particularly for the upcoming extremely large telescopes (ELTs). The large telescopes are pushing the limits of adaptive optics to reach close to a near-diffraction-limited performance. The photonic devices are ideally suited for capturing this AO-corrected light and enabling new and exciting science such as characterizing exoplanet atmospheres. The first two months of the third Advanced LIGO and Virgo observing run (2019 April-May) showed that distant gravitational wave (GW) events can now be readily detected. Three candidate mergers containing neutron stars (NS) were reported in a span of 15 days, all likely located more than 100 Mpc away. However, distant events such as the three new NS mergers are likely to be coarsely localized, which highlights the importance of facilities and scheduling systems that enable deep observations over hundreds to thousands of square degrees to detect the electromagnetic counterparts. On 2019-05-10 02:59:39.292 UT the GW candidate S190510g was discovered and initially classified as a BNS merger with 98% probability. The GW event was localized within an area of 3462 deg2, later refined to 1166 deg2 (90%) at a distance of 227 +- 92 Mpc. We triggered Target of Opportunity observations with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam), a wide-field optical imager mounted at the prime focus of the 4m Blanco Telescope at CTIO in Chile. This Letter describes our DECam observations and our real-time analysis results, focusing in particular on the design and implementation of the observing strategy. Within 24 hours of the merger time, we observed 65% of the total enclosed probability of the final skymap with an observing efficiency of 94%. We identified and publicly announced 13 candidate counterparts. We designed and built a do-it-yourself spectrograph assembly to demonstrate the concept of spectroscopy, an indispensable tool for exploring the cosmos. This spectrograph is designed for optical band (400-750 nm). It uses a transmission grating to disperse the light and a webcam to measure the spectrum. This spectrograph provides a resolving power ($\lambda/\delta\lambda$) of about 1000. This demonstration involves off-the-shelf materials costing less than \$500, thus making it an easy to build demonstration kit for a school or public setting. The kit is well-suited for performing various science experiments and acquiring hands-on experience for students to learn the concepts such as coherence, spectral orders, resolving power, absorption and emission spectra. All of these concepts are an integral part of modern astronomical observations as well as various other fields in STEM such as biomedical engineering, chemical analysis, food and water quality, etc. This kit is portable and fully modular, making it apt for outreach purposes., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. Astrophotonics is the new frontier technology to develop diffraction-limited, miniaturized, and cost-effective instruments for the next generation of large telescopes. For various astronomical studies such as probing the early universe, observing in near infrared (NIR) is crucial. To address this, we are developing moderate resolution (R = 1500) on-chip astrophotonic spectrographs in the NIR bands (J Band: 1.1-1.4 $\mu m$; H band: 1.45-1.7 $\mu m$) using the concept of arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs). We fabricate the AWGs using a silica-on-silicon substrate. The waveguides on these AWGs are 2 $\mu m$ wide and 0.1 $\mu m$ high Si3N4 core buried inside a 15 $\mu m$ thick SiO2 cladding. To make the maximal use of astrophotonic integration such as coupling the AWGs with multiple single-mode fibers coming from photonic lanterns or fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), we require a multi-input AWG design. In a multi-input AWG, the output spectrum due to each individual input channel overlaps to produce a combined spectrum from all inputs. This on-chip combination of light effectively improves the signal-to-noise ratio as compared to spreading the photons to several AWGs with single inputs. In this paper, we present the design and simulation results of an AWG in the H band with 3 input waveguides (channels). The resolving power of individual input channels is 1500, while the overall resolving power with three inputs together is 500, 600, 750 in three different configurations simulated here. The free spectral range of the device is 9.5 nm around a central wavelength of 1600 nm. For the standard multi-input AWG, the relative shift between the output spectra due to adjacent input channels is about 1.6 nm, which roughly equals one spectral channel spacing. Astrophotonics is the application of photonic technologies to channel, manipulate, and disperse light from one or more telescopes to achieve scientific objectives in astronomy in an efficient and cost-effective way. Utilizing photonic advantage for astronomical spectroscopy is a promising approach to miniaturizing the next generation of spectrometers for large telescopes. It can be primarily attained by leveraging the two-dimensional nature of photonic structures on a chip or a set of fibers, thus reducing the size of spectroscopic instrumentation to a few centimeters and the weight to a few hundred grams. A wide variety of astrophotonic spectrometers is currently being developed, including arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs), photonic echelle gratings (PEGs), and Fourier-transform spectrometer (FTS). These astrophotonic devices are flexible, cheaper to mass produce, easier to control, and much less susceptible to vibrations and flexure than conventional astronomical spectrographs. The applications of these spectrographs range from astronomy to biomedical analysis. The discovery of a transient kilonova following the gravitational-wave event GW170817 highlighted the critical need for coordinated rapid and wide-field observations, inference, and follow-up across the electromagnetic spectrum. In the Southern hemisphere, the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) on the Blanco 4-m telescope is well-suited to this task, as it is able to cover wide-fields quickly while still achieving the depths required to find kilonovae like the one accompanying GW170817 to $\sim$500 Mpc, the binary neutron star horizon distance for current generation of LIGO/Virgo collaboration (LVC) interferometers. Here, as part of the multi-facility followup by the Global Relay of Observatories Watching Transients Happen (GROWTH) collaboration, we describe the observations and automated data movement, data reduction, candidate discovery, and vetting pipeline of our target-of-opportunity DECam observations of S190426c, the first possible neutron star--black hole merger detected via gravitational waves. Starting 7.5hr after S190426c, over 11.28\,hr of observations, we imaged an area of 525\,deg$^2$ ($r$-band) and 437\,deg$^2$ ($z$-band); this was 16.3\% of the total original localization probability and nearly all of the probability density visible from the Southern hemisphere. The machine-learning based pipeline was optimized for fast turnaround, delivering transient candidates for human vetting within 17 minutes, on average, of shutter closure. We reported nine promising counterpart candidates 2.5 hours before the end of our observations. Our observations yielded no detection of a bona fide counterpart to $m_z = 22.5$ and $m_r = 22.9$ at the 5$\sigma$ level of significance, consistent with the refined LVC positioning. We report the discovery of non-stellar hydrogen Balmer and metastable helium absorption lines accompanying a transient, high-velocity (0.05$c$) broad absorption line (BAL) system in the optical spectra of the tidal disruption event (TDE) AT2018zr ($z=0.071$). In the HST UV spectra, absorption of high- and low-ionization lines are also present at this velocity, making AT2018zr resemble a low-ionization broad absorption line (LoBAL) QSO. We conclude that these transient absorption features are more likely to arise in fast outflows produced by the TDE than absorbed by the unbound debris. In accordance with the outflow picture, we are able to reproduce the flat-topped H$\alpha$ emission in a spherically expanding medium, without invoking the typical prescription of an elliptical disk. We also report the appearance of narrow ($\sim$1000~km~s$^{-1}$) NIII$\lambda$4640, HeII$\lambda4686$, H$\alpha$, and H$\beta$, emission in the late-time optical spectra of AT2018zr, which may be a result of UV continuum hardening at late time as observed by Swift. Including AT2018zr, we find a high association rate (3 out of 4) of BALs in the UV spectra of TDEs. Hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSN-I) are a class of rare and energetic explosions discovered in untargeted transient surveys in the past decade. The progenitor stars and the physical mechanism behind their large radiated energies ($\sim10^{51}$ erg) are both debated, with one class of models primarily requiring a large rotational energy, while the other requires very massive progenitors to either convert kinetic energy into radiation via interaction with circumstellar material (CSM), or engender a pair-instability explosion. Observing the structure of the CSM around SLSN-I offers a powerful test of some scenarios, though direct observations are scarce. Here, we present a series of spectroscopic observations of the SLSN-I iPTF16eh, which reveal both absorption and time- and frequency-variable emission in the Mg II resonance doublet. We show that these observations are naturally explained as a resonance scattering light echo from a circumstellar shell. Modeling the evolution of the emission, we find a shell radius of 0.1 pc and velocity of 3300 km s$^{-1}$, implying the shell was ejected three decades prior to the supernova explosion. These properties match theoretical predictions of pulsational pair-instability shell ejections, and imply the progenitor had a He core mass of $\sim 50-55~{\rm M}_{\odot}$, corresponding to an initial mass of $\sim 115~{\rm M}_{\odot}$., Comment: Accepted. The recent discovery of a faint gamma-ray burst (GRB) coincident with the gravitational wave (GW) event GW 170817 revealed the existence of a population of low-luminosity short duration gamma-ray transients produced by neutron star mergers in the nearby Universe. These events could be routinely detected by existing gamma-ray monitors, yet previous observations failed to identify them without the aid of GW triggers. Here we show that GRB150101B was an analogue of GRB170817A located at a cosmological distance. GRB 150101B was a faint short duration GRB characterized by a bright optical counterpart and a long-lived X-ray afterglow. These properties are unusual for standard short GRBs and are instead consistent with an explosion viewed off-axis: the optical light is produced by a luminous kilonova component, while the observed X-rays trace the GRB afterglow viewed at an angle of ~13 degrees. We provide timing solutions for 45 radio pulsars discovered by the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope. These pulsars were found in the Green Bank North Celestial Cap pulsar survey, an all-GBT-sky survey being carried out at a frequency of 350 MHz. We include pulsar timing data from the Green Bank Telescope and Low Frequency Array. Our sample includes five fully recycled millisecond pulsars (MSPs, three of which are in a binary system), a new relativistic double neutron star system, an intermediate mass binary pulsar, a mode-changing pulsar, a 138-ms pulsar with a very low magnetic field, and several nulling pulsars. We have measured two post-Keplerian parameters and thus the masses of both objects in the double neutron star system. We also report a tentative companion mass measurement via Shapiro delay in a binary MSP. Two of the MSPs can be timed with high precision and have been included in pulsar timing arrays being used to search for low-frequency gravitational waves, while a third MSP is a member of the black widow class of binaries. Proper motion is measurable in five pulsars and we provide an estimate of their space velocity. We report on an optical counterpart to a new black widow system and provide constraints on the optical counterparts to other binary MSPs. We also present a preliminary analysis of nulling pulsars in our sample. One promising application of photonics to astronomical instrumentation is the miniaturization of near-infrared (NIR) spectrometers for large ground- and space-based astronomical telescopes. Here we present new results from our effort to fabricate arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) spectrometers for astronomical applications entirely in-house. Our latest devices have a peak overall throughput of ~23%, a spectral resolving power (${\lambda}/{\delta}{\lambda}$) of ~1300, and cover the entire H band (1450-1650 nm) for Transverse Electric (TE) polarization. These AWGs use a silica-on-silicon platform with a very thin layer of Si3N4 as the core of the waveguides. They have a free spectral range of ~10 nm at a wavelength of ~1600 nm and a contrast ratio or crosstalk of about 2% (-17 dB). Various practical aspects of implementing AWGs as astronomical spectrographs are discussed, including the coupling of the light between the fibers and AWGs, high-temperature annealing to improve the throughput of the devices at ~1500 nm, cleaving at the output focal plane of the AWG to provide continuous wavelength coverage, and a novel algorithm to make the devices polarization insensitive over a broad band. Astrophotonics is the next-generation approach that provides the means to miniaturize near-infrared (NIR) spectrometers for upcoming large telescopes and make them more robust and inexpensive. The target requirements for our spectrograph are: a resolving power of about 3000, wide spectral range (J and H bands), free spectral range of about 30 nm, high on-chip throughput of about 80% (-1dB) and low crosstalk (high contrast ratio) between adjacent on-chip wavelength channels of less than 1% (-20dB). A promising photonic technology to achieve these requirements is Arrayed Waveguide Gratings (AWGs). We have developed our first generation of AWG devices using a silica-on-silicon substrate with a very thin layer of silicon-nitride in the core of our waveguides. The waveguide bending losses are minimized by optimizing the geometry of the waveguides. Our first generation of AWG devices are designed for H band and have a resolving power of around 1500 and free spectral range of about 10 nm around a central wavelength of 1600 nm. The devices have a footprint of only 12 mm x 6 mm. They are broadband (1450-1650 nm), have a peak on-chip throughput of about 80% (-1 dB) and contrast ratio of about 1.5% (-18 dB). These results confirm the robustness of our design, fabrication and simulation methods. Currently, the devices are designed for Transverse Electric (TE) polarization and all the results are for TE mode. We are developing separate J- and H-band AWGs with higher resolving power, higher throughput and lower crosstalk over a wider free spectral range to make them better suited for astronomical applications., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables.
