Superconducting nanostrip single photon detectors have emerged as the highest performing single-photon detectors; however, the possibility to use superconducting microstrip as single photon detectors is very appealing both to use them as larger areas detectors and for an easier technology in the manufacturing. The aim of this work is to test the photoresponse in liquid helium dewar of 9 nm thick MoSi covered with a very thin (2 nm) layer of Al, in two different configurations: nanomeanders and microstrips. We demonstrate that MoSi/Al microstrips can work as photodetectors also at T = 4.2 K. We also compare the dark count rate of the microstrip and the nanowire, confirming the lower noise for the microstrips also at 4.2 K.

The coexistence between ferromagnetic ordering and superconducting transport in tunnel ferromagnetic Josephson junctions (SFS JJs) accounts for a wide range of unconventional physical properties. The integration of both insulating ferromagnets or multi-layered insulator-ferromagnet barriers allows to combine ferromagnetic switching properties with peculiar low quasiparticle dissipation, which could enhance the capabilities of SFS JJs as active elements in quantum circuits. Here we show that split-transmon qubits based on tunnel ferromagnetic JJs realize an ideal playground to study noise fluctuations in ferromagnetic Josephson devices. By considering the transport properties of measured Al-based tunnel SFS JJs, we report on a theoretical study of the competition between intrinsic magnetization fluctuations in the barrier and quasiparticles dissipation, thus providing specific operation regimes to identify and disentangle the two noise sources, depending on the peculiar properties of the F layer and F/S interface.

Detection of single infrared photons in superconducting microstrips of 4 nm thick disordered Nb0.15Re0.85 has been investigated. Microstrips with a critical temperature of 5.15 K and widths from 1.0 to 2.5 μm have been fabricated by optical lithography. We demonstrate single photon detection sensitivity at 1.5 μm wavelength at a temperature of 1.79 K. By investigating the detection process at this temperature, we find that the current bias threshold is at 21% of the depairing current. This threshold is similar to what should be observed in typical amorphous superconductors, which confirms that ultrathin disordered Nb0.15Re0.85 is an interesting material for superconducting microstrip single photon detectors that operate above 1 K.

In this work we present the results of the fabrication and characterization of a large area Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detector (SNSPD). A particular geometry was adopted to enhance the coupling with the Lidar system MALIA (Multiwavelength Lidar Apparatus), a setup used for atmospheric aerosols observations from ultraviolet to infrared. The devices realized are very promising as they exhibit a very low dead time despite the large sensitive area.

The competition between superconducting and ferromagnetic orderings in Josephson devices has promoted fundamental and applicative studies of high impact for superconducting digital technology, cryogenic memories, and spintronics, where the possibility of switching between different magnetic states is a crucial advantage. Here, we report on fabrication and characterization of very high quality tunnel ferromagnetic Josephson junctions (JJs) with aluminum electrodes, demonstrating hysteretic behavior of the magnetic field pattern preserving typical transport properties of Al junctions, underdamped behavior, and very low quasiparticle dissipation. The proposed technology paves the way for the possible implementation of Al tunnel-ferromagnetic JJs in superconducting quantum circuits, toward alternative approaches based on digital control of the Josephson device.

The continuous development of superconducting electronics is encouraging several studies on hybrid Josephson junctions (JJs) based on superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor (SFS) heterostructures, as either spintronic devices or switchable elements in quantum and classical circuits. Recent experimental evidence of macroscopic quantum tunneling and of an incomplete 0-$\ensuremath{\pi}$ transition in tunnel-ferromagnetic spin-filter JJs could also enhance the capabilities of SFS JJs as active elements. Here, we provide a self-consistent electrodynamic characterization of $\mathrm{Nb}\mathrm{N}$/$\mathrm{Gd}\mathrm{N}$/$\mathrm{Nb}\mathrm{N}$ spin-filter JJs as a function of the barrier thickness, disentangling the high-frequency dissipation effects due to the environment from the intrinsic low-frequency dissipation processes. The fitting of the $I$-$V$ characteristics at 4.2 K and at 300 mK by using the tunnel-junction-microscopic model allows us to determine the subgap resistance ${R}_{\mathrm{sg}}$, the quality factor $Q$, and the junction capacitance $C$. These results provide the scaling behavior of the electrodynamic parameters as a function of the barrier thickness, which represents a fundamental step for the feasibility of tunnel-ferromagnetic JJs as active elements in quantum and classical circuits, and are of general interest for tunnel junctions other than conventional SIS JJs.

Nanowires of Y-Ba-Cu-O, with the thickness of 50 nm and the width ranging from 90 nm to 500 nm have been successfully grown on lanthanum aluminate substrates for photon detection experiments. The nanowires were up to 10-mu m long and formed a meander structure, covering the area of up to 30x10 mu m(2) with a fill factor of 50%. The samples were excited using optical laser pulses at a 1550 nm wavelength and resulting photoresponse signals were measured as a function of both temperature and normalized bias current. Presence of two, distinct regimes in the photoresponse temperature dependence has been clearly evidenced, suggesting different physical mechanisms of the signal formation. Presented experimental results shed new light on prospects of implementation of high-temperature superconducting oxides in photon detection and counting.

The possible use of high-temperature superconductors (HTS) for realizing superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors is a challenging, but also promising, aim because of their ultrafast electron relaxation times and high operating temperatures. The state-of-the-art HTS nanowires with a 50-nm thickness and widths down to 130 nm have been fabricated and tested under a 1550-nm wavelength laser irradiation. Experimental results presenting both the amplitude and rise times of the photoresponse signals as a function of the normalized detector bias current, measured in a wide temperature range, are discussed. The presence of two distinct regimes in the photoresponse temperature dependence is clearly evidenced, indicating that there are two different response mechanisms responsible for the HTS photoresponse mechanisms.

Archimedes is a feasibility study of a future experiment to ascertain the interaction of vacuum fluctuations with gravity. We find an unambiguous relationship between disorder-driven features in the temperature dependence of the resistance and the behavior, as functions of the temperature, of the parameters necessary to describe some of the relaxation processes in the photoinduced differential time-resolved reflectivity of three samples of ${\text{Nd}}_{1.83}{\text{Ce}}_{0.17}{\text{CuO}}_{4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\delta}}$. The latter, sharing the same $\text{Ce}$ content, have been fabricated and annealed ad hoc in order to differ only for the degree of disorder, mainly related to oxygen content and location, and, consequently, for the temperature dependence of the resistance: Two of them present a minimum in the resistance and behave as a superconductor and as a metal, respectively; the third behaves as an insulator. The systematic coherence between the resistance and the relaxation parameters behaviors in temperature for all three samples is absolutely remarkable and shows that pump-probe measurements can be extremely sensitive to disorder as it drives the emergence of new excitations and of the related relaxation channels as in this paradigmatic case.

Nanostripes of hybrid superconductor/ferromagnetic (S/F) NbN/NiCu bilayers and pure superconducting NbN nanostripes have been investigated in dark count experiments. Presence of a ferromagnetic layer influences the superconducting properties of the S/F bilayer, such as the critical current density and the transient photoresponse. The observed significant decrease of the dark-count rate is discussed in terms of vortex-related fluctuation models to shed more light in the intriguing question of the basic mechanism responsible for dark counts in superconducting nanostripe single photon detectors.
