Wafer-baking ovens are machines that bake liquid batter by heating the interconnected cast plates in a gas oven. The plates in contact with the wafer batter are generally made of the cast material. Although there are many studies on the contents in the recipes of wafer products and the effects of the additives included in the recipes on the quality of the wafer sheet, there are few studies on the effects of the material type of the wafer-baking plate on the baking process. In this study, the thermal distribution of two baking plates made of different materials (GG-25 gray cast iron and GJV-350 vermicular cast iron), their effects on the thickness of the wafer sheet, and their effects on the color distribution of the wafer sheet were investigated at different baking rates. The experiments were conducted in an industrial wafer-baking oven at two different production rates. As a result, it was observed that the GJV-350 vermicular casting plate provides a more homogeneous heat distribution, more stable wafer sheet thickness, and more homogeneous color distribution of the wafer sheet at a maximum production rate.

Occupational hygiene is very important in meat processing plants. For this reason, butchers need to disinfect the cutting blades before and after each procedure. In this study aimed that the kettle is suddenly intended to remove the water as soon as possible to the desired temperature and keep it stable at a certain temperature with the rod resistors and thermostat control system positioned on the aluminum plate of different power. It is also aimed to increase the ideal water temperature to the optimal point of use by using the energy correctly. A mechanism has been created to keep the water temperature under control with the help of a thermostat. Experimental results were obtained by operating the rod resistors placed in aluminum plate at 1 kW, 1.5kW and 2kW. It has been observed that the aluminum plate positioned under the AISI 304 quality stainless body heats the water homogeneously by the heat transfer by convection. The results from the experiments were compared according to the determined parameters. As a result of the experiments, we were observed that the rod resistance with a power of 2 kW reached the desired temperature in a shorter time.

In this study, the effect of drilling Carbon Fiber Reinforced Products (CFRP) under dry and cryogenic conditions with different diametered drill bits and different cutting parameters on delamination injury, hole diameter and on surface quality were investigated experimentally. Two different cutting speed (20 and 50 m/min), four different moving amount (0.075 mm/rev, 0.15 mm/rev, 0.225 mm/rev and 0.3 mm/rev) and two different diametered drill (4 mm and 6 mm) values for experimental design have been applied under dry and cryogenic conditions in this study. The results showed that the penetration of CFRP by the immersion cryogenic technique was facilitated, greatly improving the machinability by reducing the surface roughness of the drilled parts. However, thrust and delamination factor increased.

Bu çalışmada ASTM B574(Hastelloy C-22) malzemesi üzerinde tornalama işlemi sonrasında kesmeparametrelerinin (kesme derinliği, kesme hızı, radius, ilerleme hızı, debi,talaş açısı, yanaşma açısı) yüzey pürüzlüğü ve sıcaklık üzerindeki etkileriincelenmiştir. Kesme parametrelerini etkileyen faktörleri belirlemek için varyansanalizi (ANOVA) uygulanırken, yüzey pürüzlülüğünü etkileyen parametrelerinoptimizasyonu Taguchi ortogonal deney tasarımına dayanan Tepki YüzeyiMetodolojisi (RSM) ile elde edilmiştir. Geliştirilen modellerin yüzey pürüzlülüğüve sıcaklık tahmini için gerekli olan doğruluğu oldukça başarılıdır. Ölçütolarak değerinin kullanıldığı çalışmada ortalama Ra yüzeypürüzlüğü için %93.85, doğruluk değeri elde edilmiştir. ANOVA analizlerisonucunda %95 güven aralığında, Ra için en etkili parametreler sırasıyla kesmehızı, yanaşma açısı, talaş açısı ve debi olarak tespit edilmiş ve en düşükyüzey pürüzlüğü oranı için en uygun kesme parametre değerleri belirlenmiştir.

The vocabulary of a language is a system of interrelated lexical networks but not a collection of independent items. Vocabulary of a language is organised into fields within which words interrelate and define each other in various ways. Sense relations are not enough to explain the relation between some lexical items. For example, we cannot explain the relation between patient and hospital through synonymy, antonym, hyponymy, polysemy or homonymy, but we can say that they belong to the same semantic field which we can label as ‘health’. In this paper, semantic field also known as word field, lexical field, field of meaning, and semantic system is explained by giving supporting examples. Besides, some implications for Teaching English as a Foreign Language/Teaching English as a Second Language (TEFL/TESL) are suggested. Timely dissemination of results from clinical studies is crucial for the advancement of knowledge and clinical decision making. A large body of research has shown that up to half of clinical trials do not publish their findings. In this study, we sought to determine whether clinical trial publication rates within neurology have increased over time. Focusing on neurology clinical trials completed between 2008 to 2014, we found that while the overall percentage of published trials has not changed (remaining at approximately 50%), time to publication has significantly decreased. Our findings suggest that clinical trials within neurology are being published in a more timely manner.

When speaking or writing in a foreign language, being grammatically and semantically competent may not be enough to convey the necessary information to the interlocutors in dual conversations or to the readers who read our texts in various genres such as personal letters, formal letters, e-mails...etc., Namely, individuals who use a foreign language in their communications may generate grammatically and semantically well formed sentences or phrases but their sentences and phrases may still not be comprehensible because they fail in highlighting the new information and deemphasizing the old information. Therefore, teaching intonation, sentence stress and pitch as important characteristics of spoken language and teaching how to highlight new information and deemphasise old information when writing a text are of great importance in foreign language teaching. In this article, the concept of information structure is reviewed, examples are given both in Turkish and English and suggestions are made for EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classes. Compared to milling on a macro scale, the micromilling process has several cumbersome points that need to be addressed. Rapid tool wear and fracture, severe burr formation, and poor surface quality are the major problems encountered in the micromilling process. This study aimed to reveal the effect of cutting path strategies on the cutting force and surface quality in the micromilling of a pocket. The hatch zigzag tool path strategy and the contour climb tool path strategy under different cooling conditions (e.g., dry, air blow, and flood coolant) at fixed cutting parameters. The micromilling tests revealed that better results were obtained with the use of the contour tool path strategy in terms of cutting forces (by up to ~43% compared to the dry condition) and surface quality (by up to ~44% compared to the air blow condition) when compared to the hatch tool path strategy. In addition, the flood coolant reduces the cutting temperature and eliminates chips to significantly enhance the quality of the micro milled surface.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare retinal and optic disc functions as well as vascular structures in dominant eyes (DE) and non-dominant eyes (NDE) among healthy adults using pattern electroretinogram (PERG), optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) tests., Methods: Seventy-two eyes of 36 healthy subjects with bilateral visual acuity of 1.0 were included. Parameters such as intraocular pressure (IOP), cycloplegic spherical equivalent value (SE), PERG, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thicknesses and OCTA measurements were evaluated. Ocular dominance was determined using the hole-in-the-card test., Results: Of the participants, 67% were female, with a median age of 28 (min-max.18-35) years. Right eye dominance was observed in 61.2% of cases, while left eye dominance was seen in 38.8%. There was no significant difference in refractive values between eyes with right and left eye dominance (0.60 ± 0.40 and 0.41 ± 0.28, p = 0.42). The dominant eyes showed significantly higher P50 amplitude (10.2 µV vs. 9.2 µV, p = 0.003) and shorter peak time (47.9 ms. vs. 48.6 ms, p = 0.01) when compared to the nondominant eyes. There were comparable values in the peak times and amplitudes of the N95 component between the dominant and nondominant eyes. The RNFL layer was thicker on average (p, 0.001) as well as in the nasal and inferior quadrants of the dominant eyes (p < 0.05). OCTA analysis revealed no significant differences in the peripapillary and macular capillary vascular densities between dominant and nondominant eyes (p > 0.05), except for the deep whole capillary density in the macula, which was significantly higher in the dominant eyes (p = 0.02)., Conclusion: Our results indicate the existence of functional and structural relationships related to ocular dominance. Purpose: Neurological impairments are the leading cause of post-stroke mortality, while stroke-related cardiovascular diseases rank second in significance. This study investigates the potential protective effects of MitoTEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-[[2-(triphenylphosphonio) acetyl] amino]-1-piperidinyloxy, monochloride, monohydrate), a mitochondria-specific antioxidant, against cardiac and neurological complications following stroke. The objective is to assess whether MitoTEMPO can be utilized as a protective agent for individuals with a high risk of stroke., Materials and Methods: Seventeen-week-old male Wistar Albino rats were randomly assigned to three groups: SHAM, ischemia-reperfusion and MitoTEMPO + ischemia-reperfusion (MitoTEMPO injection 0.7 mg/kg/day for 14 days). The SHAM group underwent a sham operation, while the ischemia-reperfusion group underwent 1-h middle cerebral artery occlusion followed by three days of reperfusion. Afterwards, noninvasive thoracic electrical bioimpedance and electrocardiography measurements were taken, and sample collection was performed for histological and biochemical examinations., Results: Our thoracic electrical bioimpedance and electrocardiography findings demonstrated that MitoTEMPO exhibited a protective effect on most parameters affected by ischemia-reperfusion compared to the SHAM group. Furthermore, our biochemical and histological data revealed a significant protective effect of MitoTEMPO against oxidative damage., Conclusions: The findings suggest that both ischemia-reperfusion-induced cardiovascular abnormalities and the protective effect of MitoTEMPO may involve G-protein coupled receptor-mediated signaling mechanisms. This study was conducted with limitations including a single gender, a uniform age group, a specific stroke model limited to middle cerebral artery, and pre-scheduled only one ischemia-reperfusion period. In future studies, addressing these limitations may enable the implementation of preventive measures for individuals at high risk of stroke.

Purpose: To evaluate the findings and the correlation of optical coherence tomography angiography and pattern and flash electroretinography in diabetes mellitus without retinopathy., Methods: Seventy-six eyes of 38 diabetic patients and age- and gender-matched control subjects were included in the study. The foveal avascular zone (FAZ), whole, foveal, parafoveal and perifoveal vascular densities of the superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP) and choriocapillary plexus (CCP) layers were analyzed using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). The amplitudes and implicit times of P50 and N95 waves of the pattern ERG (pERG) and the amplitudes and implicit times of the scotopic and photopic b-waves and oscillatory potentials (OP) of the flash ERG (fERG) tests were evaluated using the Metrovision brand monpack model device., Results: The mean age of the patients was 59.7 ± 7.9 [range 43-79] years. Eighteen (47%) of the patients were female and 20 (53%) were male. The mean duration of diabetes was 7.45 ± 6.2 [range 1-20] years. No significant difference in FAZ area was found between study subjects and controls. Vascular density (VD) values of the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) layer were significantly lower (whole VD, 44.7 ± 3.3 vs. 46.6 ± 3.2%, p  = 0.01, foveal VD 16.8 ± 6.4 vs. 24.9 ± 6.1%, p  < 0.01, parafoveal VD 45.6 ± 4.5 vs. 47.1 ± 4.4%, p  = 0.27 and perifoveal VD 45.5 ± 3.3 vs. 47.3 ± 3.1%, p  = 0.01, respectively) in the diabetic group except the parafoveal area. VD measurements in deep and choriocapillary plexuses did not significantly differ between the groups ( p  > 0.05). ERG tests revealed significantly lower scotopic b-wave amplitudes (130.2 ± 39.3 µV vs.163.3 ± 47.8 µV, p  < 0.01) and photopic b-wave amplitudes (83.2 ± 20.7 µV vs. 99.6 ± 29.4 µV, p  < 0.01) in the diabetic patients. The implicit time of the photopic responses was significantly prolonged (28.9 ± 1.3 ms vs. 27.8 ± 2.1 ms, p  = 0.01) in the patients. Oscillatory potentials in all components consisting of O1 to O4 and the sum of the OP potentials were lower in the diabetic group than the control subjects ( p  < 0.001). The P50 and N95 amplitudes and implicit times were comparable between the groups ( p  > 0.05). Correlation analysis showed a positive correlation between N95 amplitudes in pERG and the superficial vessel densities in OCTA ( r  = 0.26, p  = 0.04). A negative correlation was found between photopic implicit times in fERG and the choriocapillary vessel densities (r=-0.27, p  = 0.03)., Conclusion: OCTA revealed decreased superficial vascular densities with the onset of the metabolic process of diabetes mellitus. As a result of these structural changes, lower scotopic and photopic amplitudes, decreased OP amplitudes, and prolonged implicit times in flash ERG were obtained.

Background: This study aims to evaluate the optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) findings in cases with degenerative and tractional lamellar macular holes (LMH)., Methods: Two subtypes of LMH cases were included. Seventeen patients had the degenerative subtype, whereas 18 patients had the tractional subtype of LMH. Twenty healthy individuals were enrolled as the control group. The foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and retinal vascular densities in the superficial, deep capillary, and choriocapillary plexuses were analyzed and compared with fellow eyes and healthy controls using OCTA., Results: The mean FAZ area was wider in the degenerative subtype (0.33 ± 0.14 mm 2 ) compared to the tractional subtype (0.24 ± 0.10 mm 2 ) ( p =0.04) and control eyes (0.26 ± 0.10 mm 2 ) ( p =0.03). Foveal vessel densities in the superficial and deep capillary plexuses were lower in the degenerative group than in the tractional group, (21.7 ± 9.8% vs. 26.8 ± 6.9%, p =0.01 and 28.5 ± 5.1% vs. 36.9 ± 6.2%, p =0.01). Choriocapillary vascular density in the parafoveal area was also lower in degenerative lamellar macular holes compared to the tractional group (60.4 ± 4.7% vs. 63.7 ± 3.9%, p =0.03). Compared to control eyes, eyes with degenerative and tractional LMH showed lower vessel densities in the parafoveal and perifoveal areas of the SCP, DCP, and all layers of CC ( p < 0.05). In the foveal area, the LMH groups showed higher foveal vascular density (FVD) in the SCP than control eyes, while in the DCP, FVD was lower in the degenerative LMH eyes relative to the other groups., Conclusion: The finding of microvascular changes between degenerative and tractional LMH subtypes highlights their distinct pathologies and supports recent changes in the classification and terminology of this macular condition., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2024 Burcu Polat Gültekin and Defne Kalaycı.)

Introduction: Clinical observations suggest that Omicron infections may present with different radiographic findings and be more frequently associated with bacterial co-infections, but there is a paucity of published data. This study aimed to compare the clinical and radiographic findings of patients hospitalized with Omicron versus alpha-delta infections., Materials and Methods: Between January 1, 2021 and June 30, 2021 (alpha and delta period) and between January 1, 2022 and July 31, 2022 (Omicron period), respectively 149 and 163 COVID-19 PCR-positive patients who were followed up in the COVID-19 ward and intensive care unit of a tertiary care center were included in the study. Clinical (presence of fever and purulent sputum), laboratory and radiologic findings of the two groups were compared. Sputum culture results and antibiotic use were also evaluated., Result: In the alpha/delta group, ground glass opacities were seen in 75.2% (112) of the patients, consolidation in 2.7% (4), and both findings together in 6.0% (9). In the Omicron group, ground glass was seen in 40.5% (66), consolidation in 5.5% (9), and both ground glass and consolidation together in 8.7% (13) (p< 0.001). Procalcitonin levels were 0.25 µg/L or higher in 29.6% and 43.9% of the patients in the alpha/delta and Omicron groups, respectively. Mean PCT values were 0.36 µg/L and 1.93 µg/L, respectively (p> 0.05). CRP levels were similar in both groups. Mean LDH level in the Omicron group was 278 U/L and was significantly lower than the alpha/delta group (381 U/L) (p< 0.001). The proportion of patients requiring intensive care during hospitalization was higher in the alpha/delta group (36.2% vs 26.4%) (p= 0.06)., Conclusions: Lower LDH levels, less need for intensive care and less frequent development of ARDS indicate that Omicron causes milder disease, while a higher rate of consolidation and higher procalcitonin levels suggest a higher frequency of bacterial co-infections.

This study aims to convert composite textile structures composed of nonwoven and woven fabrics produced from cotton-jute wastes into activated carbon textile structures and investigate the possibilities of using them for electromagnetic shielding applications. To this end, the novel contribution of this study is that it shows that directly carbonized nonwoven textile via self-purging microwave pyrolysis can provide Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) shielding without any processing, including cleaning. Textile carbonization is generally achieved with conventional heating methods, using inert gas and long processing times. In the present study, nonwoven fabric from cotton-jute waste was converted into an activated carbon textile structure in a shorter time via microwaves without inert gas. Due to its polar structure, FeCl 3 has been used as a microwave absorbent, providing homogeneous heating in the microwave and acting as an activating agent to serve dual purposes in the carbonization process. The maximum surface area (789.9 m 2 /g) was obtained for 5% FeCl 3 . The carbonized composite textile structure has a maximum of 39.4 dB at 1 GHz of EMI shielding effectiveness for 10% FeCl 3 , which corresponds to an excellent grade for general use and a moderate grade for professional use, exceeding the acceptable range for industrial and commercial applications of 20 dB, according to FTTS-FA-003., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

Background: In this study, we try to determine risk factors for acute kidney injury in orthotopic cardiac transplantation patients., Methods: Between February 2003 and December 2022, all cardiac transplantation patients were retrospectively reviewed. Finally, 102 patients enrolled in this study. Demographic data, comorbidities, preoperative cardiac catheterization parameters, preoperative and postoperative blood test results, intraoperative parameters, acute kidney injury developed or not, stage of acute kidney injury, and whether renal replacement therapy was required or not was recorded., Results: Of the 102 patients, 68 were male. Fifty-four of these patients developed acute kidney injury, and 31 required renal replacement therapy postoperatively. The mean age of developed acute kidney injury group (AKI+) was older than non-developed acute kidney injury group (non-AKI) (P = .01). The average body surface area of the AKI+ was 1.81 ± 0.32, whereas in non-AKI it was 1.57 ± 0.35 (P = .01). More patients were ex-smokers (P = .007) and had a history of hypertension (P= .011) in the AKI+ group. Preoperative serum creatinine was 1.12 ± 0.26 mg/dL in the AKI+ group and 0.82 ± 0.13 mg/dL in the non-AKI group (P = .02). The intraoperative urine output was 491.20 ± 276.48 mL for AKI+ and 676.45 ± 478.84 mL for the non-AKI group (P = .03)., Conclusions: Acute kidney injury development after cardiac transplantation is common. In our study, high body surface area, older age, ex-smoker, hypertension, low intraoperative urine output, and high preoperative serum creatinine levels were risk factors for acute kidney injury development in cardiac transplantation patients. Background: We present a case of bilateral maculopathy associated with deferoxamine mesylate (DFO) treatment., Methods: A 53-year-old man with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) received DFO therapy due to elevated ferritin levels. He was then referred to ophthalmology clinic due to blurred vision. He was diagnosed as bilateral neurosensory retinal detachment of the macula. During follow up, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA), and fundus autofluorescence (FAF) were evaluated., Results: At first visit, OCT showed bilateral foveal neurosensory detachment. Hyperfluorescence of the macula and the peripapillary region were found on FFA. After discontinuation of DFO, BCVA improved from 20/120 to 20/60 with resolution of the foveal detachments on OCT scan. Four weeks later, FAF showed bilateral mottled hyperautofluorescence and hypoautofluorescence at the macula and the peripapillary region., Conclusion: Deferoxamine can cause acute retinal toxicity. Background: This study aims to compare methylprednisolone frequently used in the therapeutic practices of corrosive esophagus burns, sucralfate, a protective material of mucosal surfaces, and alpha lipoic acid, the most potent antioxidant in a rat model., Methods: A total of 40 female Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this study. The rats were equally divided into control, alpha lipoic acid, methylprednisolone, and sucralfate groups (n=10). A corrosive esophagus burn was created by using 10% pH:12 sodium hydroxide. No treatment was applied to the control group, and each group was given their own treatment. The treatment was continued regularly until the eighth day, when they were sacrificed. The corrosive esophagus burn lines were removed and tissue sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin., Results: The difference in ulceration in the group treated with alpha lipoic acid was significant, compared to the other groups. The most excellent complete epithelialization and complete re-epithelialization were observed in the alpha lipoic acid group. The difference between the groups was significant, with complete re-epithelialization being the lowest in the control and methylprednisolone groups (42.9% and 12.5%, respectively) and the highest in the alpha lipoic acid group (77.8%). In terms of ulceration and re-epithelialization, comparable values were found in the alpha lipoic acid group. The main difference was that the inflammation levels in the sucralfate group were lower and more favorable than the other groups in this period. The glutathione level was significantly higher in the alpha lipoic acid group and decreased the tissue hydroxyproline level., Conclusion: Alpha lipoic acid reduces esophageal ulceration, severity and prevalence of inflammation, severity and prevalence of fibrosis, decreases tissue damage by increasing blood glutathione level, and also reduces stricture in corrosive esophagus burns in rats., Competing Interests: Conflict of Interest: The authors declared no conflicts of interest with respect to the authorship and/or publication of this article., (Copyright © 2023, Turkish Society of Cardiovascular Surgery.)

Intracranial aneurysm (IA) rupture leads to subarachnoid hemorrhage, a sudden-onset disease that often causes death or severe disability. Although genome-wide association studies have identified common genetic variants that increase IA risk moderately, the contribution of variants with large effect remains poorly defined. Using whole-exome sequencing, we identified significant enrichment of rare, deleterious mutations in PPIL4, encoding peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase-like 4, in both familial and index IA cases. Ppil4 depletion in vertebrate models causes intracerebral hemorrhage, defects in cerebrovascular morphology and impaired Wnt signaling. Wild-type, but not IA-mutant, PPIL4 potentiates Wnt signaling by binding JMJD6, a known angiogenesis regulator and Wnt activator. These findings identify a novel PPIL4-dependent Wnt signaling mechanism involved in brain-specific angiogenesis and maintenance of cerebrovascular integrity and implicate PPIL4 gene mutations in the pathogenesis of IA., (© 2021. Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension is an underdiagnosed and potentially fatal subgroup of pulmonary hypertension, if left untreated. Clinical signs include exertional dyspnea and non-specific symptoms. Diagnosis requires multimodality imaging and heart catheterization. Pulmonary endarterectomy, an open heart surgery, is the gold standard treatment of choice in selected patients in specialized centers. Targeted medical therapy and balloon pulmonary angioplasty can be effective in high-risk patients with significant comorbidities, distal pulmonary vascular obstructions, or recurrent/persistent pulmonary hypertension after pulmonary endarterectomy. Currently, there is a limited number of data regarding novel coronavirus-2019 infection in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension and the changing spectrum of the disease during the pandemic. Challenging times during this outbreak due to healthcare crisis and relatively higher case-fatality rates require convergence; that is an ultradisciplinary collaboration, which crosses disciplinary and sectorial boundaries to develop integrated knowledge and new paradigms. Endometrial cancer is the most common type of cancer in the female reproductive system. Geraniol is acyclic monoterpene alcohol derived from essential oils of aromatic plants. This study aimed to investigate the apoptosis pathway of geraniol on Ishikawa cells. The cytotoxic effects of Geraniol on Ishikawa cells were determined by an MTT test. Ishikawa cells were seeded on cover slips, the IC50 dose was applied, and the cells were incubated with antibodies against Bax, Bcl-2, and TUNEL Assay. mRNA expression analysis of apoptosis-related genes was determined by RT-qPCR with an IC50 dose of Geraniol. The IC50 dose of Geraniol decreased Bcl-2 staining significantly, but it significantly increased Bax staining and TUNEL positive cells. A significant increase in the Bax, caspase3, caspase-8, cytochrome C and Fas genes and a significant decrease in the Bcl-2 gene was observed when the IC50 dose group was compared to the cells in the control group based on their mRNA expression levels.Analysis of expression of genes whose products are involved in apoptosis suggests the involvement of the mitochondrial pathway.

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a hereditary auto-inflammatory disease with accompanying findings of amyloidosis and vasculitis. M694V is one of the most common mutations associated with amyloidosis. This study compared the macular optical coherence tomography angiography measurements in FMF patients who were genetically verified to carry the M694V mutation of the MEFV gene to those in healthy controls. The vessel densities (VDs) of superficial (SVP) and deep vascular plexus (DVP) of the retina, and choriocapillaris, foveal avascular zone (FAZ) perimetry, foveal VD 300µ around the FAZ (FD-300), acirculatory index (AI) and non-flow area were measured with  optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A). The FMF and control groups were matched for age and gender. Compound heterozygous pathogenic variants were excluded. Thirty-eight FMF patients with M694V mutations (28 heterozygous and 10 homozygous) and 40 healthy controls were included. The two groups were similar with the regard to age and gender ( P =0.88 and P =0.49, respectively). None of the investigated parameters, including the vessel densities of the SVP and DVP, and choriocapillaris, FAZ perimetry, FD-300, AI, and non-flow area showed a statistically significant difference between the FMF and control groups. The macular vessel density measurements and FAZ parameters of FMF patients with M694V mutations do not differ from age- and sex-matched healthy controls.

Evidence associates scholastic performance to quality of eating habits. However, there is limited information on this topic in Turkey, an emerging economy with notable disparities. Our work aimed to evaluate the effect of eating habits quality of high-school students in Turkey, on the Scholastic Aptitude Standardized Examination (TEOG) scores. The study was conducted in 29 different cities in Turkey during the academic year 2016-2017, involving students of ages 14-17 years (up to senior-high school). A dietary habits survey developed and validated for this population was distributed over the internet in February 2017. Apart from students' TEOG scores, Family Affluence Score (FAS) was used to categorize the students into low, medium, and high financial standing. Eating Habits Score (EHS) was calculated by using a validated scoring system. A working sample of 298 participants was used. Based on our results, we observed that there is a significant positive correlation between EHS, FAS and success rate of students as assessed by TEOG scores. Further research on this subject should be conducted in combination with intervention studies to reveal potential strategies and policies that would enhance positive behavior change as it relates to nutritional habits, aiming at improved scholastic performance and overall health throughout lifespan.

Heart failure is the one of the biggest health problem in the world. Because of limited donors for heart transplant procedures, the ventricular assist device has become a solution for heart failure therapy. With the increase in number of ventricular assist devices, the incidence of complications has also increased. One of the most important life-threatening complications is ventricular assist device thrombosis. Medical therapy and changes in the ventricular assist device are the main therapy methods for ventricular assist device thrombosis. In this study, we showed our clinical experience with treatment of ventricular assist device thrombosis.

Due to the increase in the number of patients waiting for heart transplantation and shortage of heart donors, both the use of mechanical assist devices and their associated complications increase. Here we present the case of a stenosis occurring in a patient at aortic outflow graft anastomosis for whom we applied a left ventricular assist device, followed by a discussion of the diagnosis, approach, and the treatment we offer in our clinic.

Objectives: Left ventricular distention can be recognized during the use of venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation as a key complication. Left ventricular decompression may decrease pulmonary pressure, minimize ventricular distention, and allow myocardial recovery., Materials and Methods: We applied venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation to 4 patients while on a wait list for cardiac transplant., Results: Two patients with severe heart failure developed high end-diastolic pressures leading to left ventricular distention. We used atrial venting methods to decrease the pressure., Conclusions: Here, we discussed the strategies to manage ventricular distention by conservative, interventional, and surgical means.

Objectives: Acute kidney injury is a frequent complication after orthotopic cardiac transplant. We aimed to describe the risk factors for acute kidney injury after cardiac transplant according to Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes criteria., Materials and Methods: We retrospectively studied a population-based cohort of cardiac transplant recipients (aged > 12 y) at Başkent University between February 2003 and January 2015. Of 94 patients, 64 were evaluated and included in the study. The main outcome was acute kidney injury, defined and classified according to Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes criteria, during 7 postoperative days. Other outcomes included risk factors, use of renal replacement therapy, postoperative complications, mortality, and kidney recovery., Results: Mean age at transplant was 34.14 ± 16.30 years, and 45 patients (70.32%) were men. Acute kidney injury developed in 34 (53.12%) of 64 cardiac transplant recipients, with severity classified as stage 1 in 10 (15.62%), stage 2 in 14 (21.87%), and stage 3 in 10 (15.62%). Renal replacement therapy was given to 25 patients (39.06%). Patients with acute kidney injury were significantly older (40.41 ± 15.85 y vs 27.03 ± 13.91 y; P = .001), had larger body surface area (1.78 ± 0.28 m2 vs 1.61 ± 0.31 m2; P = .033), and more frequently had a history of hypertension (P = .011) and smoking (P = .007) than did patients without acute kidney injury. They also had lower intraoperative urine output (453.380 ± 266.85 mL) than did patients who did not develop acute kidney injury (632.33 ± 430.94 mL (P = .01)., Conclusions: According to the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes criteria, acute kidney injury occurs in more than 50% of heart transplant patients postoperatively. Older age, larger body surface area, and history of hypertension and smoking are associated with acute kidney dysfunction following orthotopic heart transplant.
