This study evaluates the effect of plasma surface functionalization of reduced graphene oxide particles on the processing characteristics and homogeneity of dispersion of a bisphenol A‐(epichlorhydrin) epoxy matrix and amine‐based hardener with varying weight fractions from 0.00 to 1.50 wt%. It was observed that amine‐functionalized reduced graphene oxide leads to a more drastic viscosity increase of up to 18‐fold of the uncured suspensions and that its presence influences the conversion rates of the curing reaction. Optical microscopy of thin sections and transmission electron microscopy analysis showed that a more homogeneous dispersion of the particles could be achieved especially at higher weight fractions by using an appropriate surface functionalization. This knowledge can be used to define suitable processing conditions for epoxies with amine‐based hardeners depending on the loading and functionalization of graphene‐related particles. Film uniformity is an issue in many deposition processes, especially in substrates with elongated lateral dimensions such as fibers. In this study, a plasma chamber was designed with dual electrodes to improve the uniformity of plasma polymer films. Plasma‐polymerized acrylic acid films were deposited via single‐electrode or double‐electrode configurations onto silicon wafer pieces placed at the center of the chamber to mimic the potential position of a fiber. A radial and spatial map of film chemistry and thickness throughout the chamber was determined which demonstrated improved radial uniformity and film stability using the dual‐electrode configuration, thus highlighting the importance of spatial characterization when designing a reactor for the coating of three‐dimensional objects such as fibers. In this work, micro-composite materials were produced by incorporating 3-mm long reclaimed short carbon fibers into bio-based nylon 11 via melt compounding. A systematic fiber length distribution analysis was performed after the masterbatching, compounding and an injection moulding processes using optical microscopy images. It was found that the large majority of the fibers were within the 200-300 μm in length range after the injection moulding process. The mechanical (flexural and tensile), thermo-mechanical, and creep properties of the injection moulded materials are reported. We found that an enhancement in flexural and Young's modulus of 25% and 14%, respectively, could be attained with 2 wt% carbon fiber loading whilst no significant drawback on the ductility and toughness of the matrix was observed. The creep resistance and recovery of the nylon 11, tested using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis at room temperature and 65°C, was significantly improved by up to 30% and 14%, respectively, after loading with carbon fiber. This work provides an insight into the property improvement of the bio-based polymer nylon 11 using a small amount of a reclaimed engineered material. POLYM. The present work aims at finding a relationship between kinetic models of thermal degradation process with the physiochemical structure of epoxy–clay nanocomposites in order to understand its service temperature. In this work, two different types of modified clays, including clay modified with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) and a commercial organoclay, were covalently and non-covalently incorporated into epoxy matrix, respectively. The effect of different concentrations of silanized clay on thermal behaviour of epoxy nanocomposites were first investigated in order to choose the optimum clay concentration. Afterwards, thermal characteristics of the degradation process of epoxy nanocomposites were obtained by TGA analysis and the results were employed to determine the kinetic parameters using model-free isoconversional and model-fitting methods. The obtained kinetic parameters were used to model the entire degradation process. The results showed that the incorporation of the different modified clay into epoxy matrix change the mathematical model of the degradation process, associating with different orientations of clay into epoxy matrix confirming by XRD results. The obtained models for each epoxy nanocomposite systems were used to investigate the dependence of degradation rate and degradation time on temperature and conversion degree. Our results provide an explanation as to how the life time of epoxy and its nanocomposites change in a wide range of operating temperatures as a result of their structural changes. Complex molecules have been successfully grafted onto the surface of unsized carbon fibre, a heterogeneous material which is a challenge to functionalise. The in situ generation of highly reactive phenyldiazo-species from their corresponding anilines was employed to achieve this task. The success of an initial proof-of-concept study (bearing a nitro moiety) supported by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and physical characterisation, led to the design and synthesis of a more complex compound possessing a pendant amine moiety which could theoretically react with an epoxide based resin. After attachment to unsized oxidised fibres, analysis by XPS of the resulting fibres (fluorine used as an XPS tag) indicated a marked difference in functionalisation success which was attributed to steric factors, shown to be critical in influencing the attachment of the phenyldiazo-intermediate to the carbon fibre surface. Analysis of key fibre performance parameters of these fibres showed no change in elastic modulus, strength, surface topography or microscopic roughness when compared to the control unsized oxidised fibres. The functionalised fibres did however show a large increase in coefficient of friction. Single fibre fragmentation tests indicated a marked increase in interfacial shear strength, which was attributed to the pendent amine functionalities interacting with the epoxy resin. We demonstrate the utilisation of an azomethine 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction with carbon fibre to graft complex molecules onto the fibre surface. In an effort to enhance the interfacial interaction of the fibre to the matrix, the functionalised fibres possessed a pendant amine that is able to interact with epoxy resins. Functionalisation was supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the grafting process had no detrimental effects on tensile strength compared with the control (untreated) fibres. Also, microscopic roughness (as determined by atomic force microscopy) and fibre topography were unchanged after the described treatment process. This methodology complements existing methodology aimed at enhancing the surface of carbon fibres for advanced material applications while not compromising the desirable strength profile. Single-fibre fragmentation tests show a statistically significant decrease in fragment length compared with the control fibres in addition to transverse cracking within the curing resin, both of which indicate an enhanced interaction between fibre and resin.
