The search for particle-like dark matter with meV-to-GeV masses has developed rapidly in the past few years. We summarize the science case for these searches, the recent progress, and the exciting upcoming opportunities. 20. Hydrogen supersaturated layers in H/D plasma-loaded tungsten: A global model based on thermodynamics, kinetics and density functional theory data

Abstract

In this work, we combine Density Functional Theory data with a Thermodynamic and a kinetic model to determine the total concentration of hydrogen implanted in the sub-surface of tungsten exposed to a hydrogen flux. The sub-surface hydrogen concentration is calculated given a flux of hydrogen, a temperature of implantation, and the energy of the incoming hydrogen ions as independent variables. This global model is built step by step; an equilibrium between atomic hydrogen within bulk tungsten and a molecular hydrogen gas phase is first considered, and the calculated solubility is compared with experimental results. Subsequently, a kinetic model is used to determine the chemical potential for hydrogen in the sub-surface of tungsten. Combining both these models, two regimes are established in which hydrogen is preferentially trapped at either interstitial sites or in vacancies. We deduce from our model that the existence of these two regimes is driven by the temperature of the implanted tungsten sample; above a threshold or transition temperature is the interstitial regime, below is the vacancy regime in which super-saturated layers form within tenths of angstrom below the surface. A simple analytical expression is derived for the coexistence of the two regimes depending on the implantation temperature, the incident energy and the flux of the hydrogen ions which we use to plot the corresponding phase diagram.

Liquid biopsy analysis of miRNAs is a fast-developing field with a considerable likelihood to predict tumor progression and metastasis by targeting genes involved in oncogenesis.Patients and Methods: Differential expression analysis of miRNAs profile in CRPC patients was performed by creating small RNA libraries of circulating miRNAs using HiSeq2500 Illumina platform. A secondary analysis of aligned reads with miRNA identification and quantification was performed using miARmaSeq. Using the Bowtie algorithm, the selected variants were compared to reference nucleotide sequence GRCh38 and miRbase. Novel miRNA sequences were structurally analyzed using mirDeep2®.Results: A total of 16 patients with CRPC were included for analysis. Identified circulating miRNAs were hsa-miR-885-3p, hsa-miR-4467, hsa-miR-4686, hsa-miR-146a-3p, hsa-miR-6514-5p. Genes identified as regulated by these miRNAs were GPR56, BDNF, CTNND1, C17orf62, and DTNA.Conclusion: We explored the miRNA expression profile in patients with CRPC, identifying five miRNAs implicated in the regulation of genes involved in prostate cancer (PCa) oncogenesis and progression. Abstract

Background: Typically, researchers and clinicians determine the agenda in sarcoma research. However, patient involvement can have a meaningful impact on research. Therefore, the Patient-Powered Research Network (PPRN) of the Sarcoma Patient Advocacy Global Network (SPAGN) set up a Priority Setting Partnership (PSP). The primary objective of this partnership is to identify priorities for research and patient advocacy topics. Methods: In the first phase of this PSP, including 264 sarcoma patients and carers from all over the world, 23 research topics regarding sarcomas and 15 patient advocacy topics were identified using an online survey. In the second phase, participants were asked to fill in a top five and a top three of research and patient advocacy topics, respectively. Additionally, sociodemographic characteristics and sarcoma characteristics were collected. Social media channels, local national patient advocacy groups and the SPAGN website were used to distribute the survey. Results: In total, 671 patients (75%) and carers (25%) participated in this survey. The five highest ranked research topics were related to causes of sarcoma (43%), prognosis and risk of recurrence (40%), specific subtypes of sarcoma (33%), the role of immunotherapy, targeted therapy and combined therapy (30%), and hereditary aspects (30%). The three highest ranked patient advocacy topics were improving the diagnostic process of sarcoma (39%), access to tumor DNA analysis (37%) and establishing an international sarcoma registry (37%). Conclusions: This sarcoma PSP has identified priorities for research and patient advocacy, offering guidance for researchers, assisting funding agencies with assessing project relevance and empowering patient advocates to represent the needs of patients and carers. Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic heightened risks for individuals with hematological malignancies due to compromised immune systems, leading to more severe outcomes and increased mortality. While interventions like vaccines, targeted antivirals, and monoclonal antibodies have been effective for the general population, their benefits for these patients may not be as pronounced. Methods: The EPICOVIDEHA registry (National Clinical Trials Identifier, NCT04733729) gathers COVID-19 data from hematological malignancy patients since the pandemic's start worldwide. It spans various global locations, allowing comprehensive analysis over the first three years (2020–2022). Findings: The EPICOVIDEHA registry collected data from January 2020 to December 2022, involving 8767 COVID-19 cases in hematological malignancy patients from 152 centers across 41 countries, with 42% being female. Over this period, there was a significant reduction in critical infections and an overall decrease in mortality from 29% to 4%. However, hospitalization, particularly in the ICU, remained associated with higher mortality rates. Factors contributing to increased mortality included age, multiple comorbidities, active malignancy at COVID-19 onset, pulmonary symptoms, and hospitalization. On the positive side, vaccination with one to two doses or three or more doses, as well as encountering COVID-19 in 2022, were associated with improved survival. Interpretation: Patients with hematological malignancies still face elevated risks, despite reductions in critical infections and overall mortality rates over time. Hospitalization, especially in ICUs, remains a significant concern. The study underscores the importance of vaccination and the timing of COVID-19 exposure in 2022 for enhanced survival in this patient group. Abstract

L1157-mm powers a molecular outflow that is well-known for its shock-induced chemical activity in several hot-spots. We have studied the molecular emission toward L1157-mm searching for a jet component responsible for these spots. We used the IRAM 30m telescope to observe the vicinity of L1157-mm in several lines of SiO. The SiO(5-4) and SiO(6-5) spectra toward L1157-mm present blue and red detached components about 45 km/s away from the ambient cloud. These extremely high-velocity (EHV) components are similar to those found in the L1448 and IRAS 04166+2706 outflows, and probably arise from a molecular jet driven by L1157-mm. Observations of off-center positions indicate that the jet is unresolved in SiO(5-4) (<11").
