While academic researchers have proposed various theories for managing risk and uncertainty in construction projects, most of the propositions are conceptual in nature and based on analytical modelling approaches rarely used in practice. This research was triggered by an observation in which a R1·5 billion (∼US$100 million) fast-track New Universities Project in South Africa was successfully delivered within budget despite up to 74% of the project scope not being capable of being priced by the contractor at the start of construction. The aim of this paper was to examine the client’s delivery-management approach used to manage uncertainty and deliver within budget successfully. The evidence from document analyses and interviews with the client delivery-management team members shows that setting a rigorous control budget, designing to the budget, working collaboratively, disciplined management of the control budget and continuous value engineering were the key client management techniques used to manage the high degree of uncertainty and deliver the project within budget successfully. Given that these are client-led delivery-management issues, the findings fill an important gap in the knowledge and understanding of how infrastructure project outcomes can be significantly improved on when the client functions as the leader of the infrastructure delivery process.

Fast track construction with enhanced quality, sustainable and environment-friendly methods and materials are much sought after in the construction industry. Insulated concrete form (ICF) is an evolving technique that could satisfy the present demand of the construction industry. ICF is a composite of concrete and expanded polystyrene (EPS), which enhances the insulation and other mechanical properties to the building. The objective of this study is to explore the compressive and flexural characteristics of EPS and ICF blocks under standard loading condition and evaluate the thermal performance of ICF panels using R-value. Plastic deformation, failure and energy absorption behavior of EPS and ICF blocks are assessed using compressive stress-strain profiles. The experimental results show that the plastic deformation of the ICF block is 78 times higher than plain concrete block. The presence of EPS in ICF helps to change the failure nature of sandwiched concrete from brittle to ductile, which is quantified in terms of plastic deformation. A simplified experimental approach is proposed to study the thermal performance of ICF panel using R-value. The proposed design is effective to measure the thermal resistance of wall panels and the obtained R-value of the ICF panel is 5.22 m2.K/W which is 7.9 times higher than the plain concrete panel. The higher R-value of ICF provides greater insulation to the building by keeping the controlled temperature for longer periods. This thermal insulation behavior of ICF reduces power demand and makes the building more energy-efficient. Thus the ICF system helps in sustainable building construction by affording high thermal insulation with improved structural strength.

The current scenario in India has restricted horizontal growth, especially in cities, the crystal rectifier for building construction to the vertical growth. India's construction industry is an important development indicator, as it creates opportunities for investment across numerous connected sectors. Today, fast track construction is a fast-growing economy, with rising costs and therefore time savings in construction can compensate for vital proportions of overall construction costs. This paper presents a study on time and cost-wise feasibility between two construction systems, Structural Steel and Concrete, precast concrete construction. A case study considered for this work is a 16-storied building, which consists of six stilt floors meant for parking, and the rest of floors are meant for office space. The Primavera P6-2017 used for time scheduling and the optimum time required at different stages of all these two buildings are calculated. The cost of structure is calculated considering the above two systems of construction and details presented here with. On the time basis, the composite structure will be an option for the client as it will reduce the time about 33 days and coming to the cost point of view structural steel is a bit of cost material. While coming to the precast structure it may take more than the time required for the composite structure, but cost analysis reveals that it will be economical than composite structure.

Modular prefabrication technology promotes off-site manufacturing of modules and on-site assembly by improving the construction efficiency, safety and productivity. However, the joining of individual modules needs special connectors that must be fast to install and robust enough to ensure structural integrity. The restrictions on the overall dimension and weight of the modules for lifting and transportation provide the impetus to develop a more efficient structural module system that is lightweight and fast to install. This paper discusses the design and construction challenges of existing modular construction of high-rise buildings and provides solutions to resolve these challenges. A novel lightweight steel-concrete composite system is introduced to reduce the weight of the module without compromising the strength and stiffness. To increase the available headroom, a slim floor system is proposed to reduce the floor-to-floor depth and ensure the integration of buildings service within the structural zone. High strength concrete is used as an infill material for tubular columns to maintain the same column size to avoid complex joining details involving modules with different column sizes. Long-span steel concrete composite modular system is proposed to reduce the number of joints and columns for fast track construction. A fast and easy joining technique is developed to ensure fast installation of modules. Inter-module joints are modelled as semi-rigid to capture the realistic joint behaviour in global analysis to ensure the structural integrity and overall stability of the building.

Issue of mobility is of the greatest concern across the world and is based on end-user requirement. Fast track implementation and innovative schemes are required. Use of steel-concrete superstructure has now become de rigueur as highly automated fabrication and transport logistics have improved throughout India. Precast segmental construction has been shown to be not only for glamorous and highly visible urban projects such as flyovers, but also for pedestrian subways, that would go typically unnoticed. Only the innovator knows how the innovation came to be that serves the society by reducing implementation duration and allows greater surface mobility. These are some of the items that are described in this paper.It also focuses on innovations that include fast track implementation in transportation sector for infrastructure and with a brief on system. Case study/studies are presented to discuss concept, design and construction in improving Indian urban mobility.

The 1915 Canakkale Bridge is a world record 2023 m main span suspension bridge crossing the Canakkale Strait in Turkey to connect Europe and Asia. Detailed design has been prepared in a challenging short period of 12 months. Significant design challenges for aerodynamics, ship collision, seismic and poor soil conditions have in combination with the very tight design and construction schedule significantly impacted alignment and articulation of the bridge. To accommodate the windy location, the bridge girder is designed as a twin-box steel girder for the purpose of a wind-resistant design. The dense ship traffic including the world largest ships and a massive grow rate for the strait has governed the design of the deep water tower foundations. The bridge situation in a seismically active region has further affected significant parts of the substructure design. Seismic hazard and difficult geological site conditions impose tremendous challenges to the bridge design. Finally, the tight construction schedule has conditioned the design solutions to accommodate fast track construction. The paper summarize the engineering approach, design decisions regarding alignment and articulation, design challenges and results obtained for the detailed design of the bridge.

This report describes the technology of using precast concrete panels for the repair of concrete pavements. The objective of the study was to assess the state-of-technology and to identify implementation challenges. The repair of concrete pavements using precast concrete panels may be an effective alternative to cast-in-place repairs, because it can reduce construction time and provide durable pavements. Construction costs of repairs using precast panels are typically higher than the cost of repairs using cast-in-place paving with high-early-strength concrete. However, the repairs using precast panels have the potential to be faster and of higher quality. The greatest potential for using precast repairs is for situations where identical precast panels can be used at different repair locations. Successful pavement repairs using precast panels carried out under time constraints require close cooperation between the facility owner, the contract administrator, and the contractor. All factors influencing the opening of the facility to traffic must be taken into account and coordinated accordingly. Current technologies for placement of precast panels use cementitious materials or polyurethane foam beneath the slab to ensure full contact/support with the underlying substrate. Repairs using precast panels depend on material and construction quality. As always, there is risk associated with the use of new technological procedures that are not in routine use and do not have an established long-term history. Architectural planning, engineering, and building are the major areas in the complex, process-driven, field of construction. When it comes to large housing projects in contemporary times, the speed of construction is given paramount importance. Among the emerging technologies in mass housing projects, formwork system happens to be the favourite for two reasons: completing the project in less time and obtaining good concrete finishing without change in the investment. Thanks to the phenomenal rise in building of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings and structures, formwork system is in great demand. Formwork system also owes its great demand due to record building of mega infrastructure projects such as transport infrastructure (R&B), water resources engineering works, sports buildings, stadiums, and so on. Fast-track construction largely depends on formwork system. For example, Mivan, a modern method consisting of an aluminium-based formwork system, is found widely used in the building of housing units and mass residential projects. Suitable to Indian conditions for its low maintenance feature and cost-effectiveness, it is aluminum formwork that can be tailormade to suit various requirements. This paper attempts to compare the technology cost of aluminium-based Mivan formwork with that of conventional construction formwork technology. It works on the hypothesis that Mivan technology is more cost-effective, qualitatively superior, and time-saving as compared to conventional formwork technology.

The aim of this research is to explore the quality management methods adopted by contractors in fast-track construction projects by identifying the challenges experienced by the contractors and how these challenges are mitigated. To achieve the study objectives, a qualitative case study research design was applied using the narratives, in form of interviews, extracted from the contractors, clerk of works, quantity surveyors and project managers. The case studies were from projects in East London, Queenstown and Aliwal North in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The findings from the study suggest that majority of those interviewed have an understanding of the concept of fast-track construction. The study also discovered that the most essential quality management methods adopted by contractors in fast-track construction were checklist, design-build, schedule compression technique, quality control plan, and Plan-Do-Act-Check methods. The study concludes that the fast-track construction approach can aid construction projects to be completed on time without jeopardising the quality standard. However, the contractors need to be meticulous in the application of the fast-track construction approach considering the challenges inherent therein.

Escalating demand for land and high rise construction leads to augmentation of lighter construction. Abating total dead load of the structure is a primal need in earthquake prone areas. In the past few decades composite panels consisting of hollow honeycombed structure have been used as a filling material in many structures. Due to ease in construction and availability, it can be used in disaster struck areas for fast track construction. It light weight makes it a viable choice for construction in seismic zones, which leads to lesser damage and loss of life compared to convectional construction materials. The sandwich panel is a composition of weak core material bonded with stiffer panel on both ends. It has low density and high energy absorption hence used as energy absorbers of high efficiency. In the present study, strength assessment of composite panels is carried numerically and validated experimentally. Numerical simulation using finite element (FE) model is carried out to understand deformation patterns under impact loading. Two tests for assessment of composite panels under impact and bending loads are carried out. Peak load and energy absorption characteristics are established. Through critical observation it was found that type of loading and aspect ratio plays an important role in determining usage of composite panels as structural components in disaster mitigation scenarios.

New fast track construction projects worth more than $100 billion are being implemented in Makkah to improve services being rendered to millions of pilgrims who come for Hajj and Umrah. The new development projects in Makkah, including largest expansion of the Grand Mosque. The time factor has become increasingly as an outstanding requirement on this construction projects. In the present work, the question "acceleration of construction projects" is moved in the center. Consequently, innovative structures, procedures and techniques are required for a time-oriented project management; consistently and purposefully focus on the reduction of process time and not to shrink back from entirely new, unfamiliar processes. so recommendations for the efficient management of construction projects always need to be developed taking into account the specific objectives and framework. This article discusses also the deterministic method, the simplified stochastic method and the application of the Monte-Carlo simulation as a stochastic method. With increasing of level of detail of the information content of the project and increases the calculation effort with the result that the range of the construction time decreases, thus the accuracy increases. Based on this range, finally the construction time of the building as well as the part times for the individual construction phases are determined.

The rapid economic development such as now day, it need a construction method that may provide a facility faster and less cost. Therefore, fast track method has been widely applied in project management as happened in Qunci Villas Project at Lombok and Putri Naga Komodo Project at Loh Liang of Komodo Island. Fast track construction method has potential risks that can interfere the success of the project. This study aims to identify the risks, especially the mayor risk, to formulate the mitigation action, and to determine the risk ownership. This study was conducted using qualitative descriptive method by identifying the risks arising during the implementation of the fast track method on Qunci Villas and Putri Naga Komodo Projects through the study of literature, brainstorming, interview using questionnaires to those who knew or were involved in the project. So the frequency and magnitude of the consequences of each risk can be known. Then the risk assessment can be conducted to determine the mayor risk and the minor risk. Then determining mitigation action for the mayor risk to reduce the negative impact that may arise. Then allocating the risk ownership in other to the mitigation action can be handled properly. The risk identified totaled 25 risks consisting of : 1 risk (4%) which was medium risk rating, 6 risks (24%) which were high risk rating, and 18 risks (72%) which were extreme risk rating. The mayor risk amounted to 24 risks (96%). The mayor risk which were high risk rating consisting of : 1 planning risk, 3 technical risks, 1 project risk and 1 criminal risk. While mayor risk which were extreme risk rating consisting of : 5 technical risks, 10 project risks, 2 financial risks, and 1 human risk. Mitigation action were handled by reducing likelihood and consequence. The most risks ownership were allocated to the contractor.
