X-ray photodesorption yields of N 2 15 and CO 13 are derived as a function of the incident photon energy near the N (∼400 eV) and O K-edge (∼500 eV) for pure N 2 15 ice and mixed CO 13 : N 2 15 ices. The photodesorption spectra from the mixed ices reveal an indirect desorption mechanism for which the desorption of N 2 15 and CO 13 is triggered by the photoabsorption of CO 13 and N 2 15 , respectively. This mechanism is confirmed by the x-ray photodesorption of CO 13 from a layered CO 13 / N 2 15 ice irradiated at 401 eV on the N 1s → π* transition of N 2 15 . This latter experiment enables us to quantify the relevant depth involved in the indirect desorption process, which is found to be 30–40 monolayers in that case. This value is further related to the energy transport of Auger electrons emitted from the photoabsorbing N 2 15 molecules that scatter toward the ice surface, inducing the desorption of CO 13 . The photodesorption yields corrected from the energy that can participate in the desorption process (expressed in molecules desorbed by eV deposited) do not depend on the photon energy; hence, they depend neither on the photoabsorbing molecule nor on its state after Auger decay. This demonstrates that x-ray induced electron stimulated desorption, mediated by Auger scattering, is the dominant process explaining the desorption of N 2 15 and CO 13 from the ices studied in this work. CO 2 is a major component of the icy mantles surrounding dust grains in planet and star formation regions. Understanding its photodesorption is crucial for explaining gas phase abundances in the coldest environments of the interstellar medium irradiated by vacuum-UV (VUV) photons. Photodesorption yields determined experimentally from CO 2 samples grown at low temperatures ( T = 15 K) have been found to be very sensitive to experimental methods and conditions. Several mechanisms have been suggested for explaining the desorption of CO 2 , O 2 and CO from CO 2 ices. In the present study, the cross-sections characterizing the dynamics of photodesorption as a function of photon fluence (determined from released molecules in the gas phase) and of ice composition modification (determined in situ in the solid phase) are compared for the first time for different photon flux conditions (from 7.3 × 10 12 photon per s cm -2 to 2.2× 10 14 photon per s cm -2 ) using monochromatic synchrotron radiation in the VUV range (on the DESIRS beamline at SOLEIL). This approach reveals that CO and O 2 desorptions are decorrelated from that of CO 2 . CO and O 2 photodesorption yields depend on photon flux conditions and can be linked to surface chemistry. In contrast, the photodesorption yield of CO 2 is independent of the photon flux conditions and can be linked to bulk ice chemical modification, consistently with indirect desorption induced by an electronic transition (DIET) process.

Although UV photon-induced CO ice desorption is clearly observed in many cold regions of the Universe as well as in the laboratory, the fundamental question of the mechanisms involved at the molecular scale remains debated. In particular, the exact nature of the involved energy transfers in the indirect desorption pathway highlighted in previous experiments is not explained. Using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we explore a new indirect desorption mechanism in which a highly vibrationally excited CO (v=40) within an aggregate of 50 CO molecules triggers the desorption of molecules at the surface. The desorption originates first from a mutual attraction between the excited molecule and the surrounding molecule(s), followed by a cascade of energy transfers, ultimately resulting in the desorption of vibrationally cold CO (∼95% in v=0). The theoretical vibrational distribution, along with the kinetic energy one, which peaks around 25 meV for CO with low rotational levels (v=0, J<7), is in excellent agreement with the results obtained from VUV laser induced desorption (157 nm) of CO (v=0, 1) probed using REMPI.

Being a potential process that could explain gas phase abundances of so-called complex organic molecules (COMs) in the cold interstellar medium (ISM), the UV photon-induced desorption from organics-containing molecular ices has been experimentally studied. In this work, we focused on the observation of the photodesorbed products and the measurement of the associated photodesorption yields from pure and mixed molecular ices, each containing organic molecules whose detection has been achieved in the gas phase of the cold ISM, namely formic acid HCOOH and methyl formate HCOOCH 3 . Each molecule, in pure ice or in ice mixed with CO or water, was irradiated at 15 K with monochromatic vacuum UV photons in the 7-14 eV range using synchrotron radiation from the SOLEIL synchrotron facility, DESIRS beamline. Photodesorption yields of the intact molecules and of the photoproducts were derived as a function of the incident photon energy. Experiments have revealed that the desorbing species match the photodissociation pattern of each isolated molecule, with little influence of the kind of ice (pure or mixed in CO or H 2 O-rich environment). For both species, the photodesorption of the intact organics is found to be negligible in our experimental conditions, resulting in yields typically below 10 -5 ejected molecules per incident photon. The results obtained on HCOOH and HCOOCH 3 -containing ices are similar to what has already been found for methanol-containing ices, but contrast with the case of another complex molecule, CH 3 CN, photodesorption of which has been recently studied. Such experimental results may be linked to the observation of COMs in protoplanetary disks, in which CH 3 CN is commonly observed whereas HCOOH or methanol are detected only in some sources, HCOOCH 3 not being detected at all.

The anharmonic infrared (IR) emission spectra of phenylacetylene C 6 H 5 CCH and an isotopologue C 6 H 5 CCD induced by 193 nm UV excitation have been investigated in the gas phase. The study has been operated with a homemade IR spectrometer enabling to record time- and wavelength-resolved spectra between 2.5 and 4.5 μm, emitted all along the collisional cooling. The analysis is supported by a kinetic Monte Carlo simulation in the vibrational harmonic approximation. For both species, the anharmonic shifts of the acetylenic C-H or C-D stretching modes and the aromatic C-H stretching modes are studied for band positions and bandwidths in terms of the internal energy. For C 6 H 5 CCD, the internal energy dependence of the emission intensity band ratio is investigated and rationalized. This work demonstrates the potential of time-resolved IR emission spectroscopy to explore anharmonicity of astrophysically relevant molecules.

We present a study of the photofragmentation of three protonated azaindole molecules - 7-azaindole, 6-azaindole, and 5-azaindole - consisting of fused pyrrole-pyridine bicyclic aromatic systems, in which the pyridinic (protonated) nitrogen heteroatom is located at the 7, 6, and 5 positions, respectively. Photofragmentation electronic spectra of the isolated aforementioned azaindolinium cations reveal that their photodynamics extends over timescales covering nine orders of magnitude and provide evidence about the resultant fragmentation pathways. Moreover, we show how the position of the heteroatom in the aromatic skeleton influences the excited state energetics, fragmentation pathways, and fragmentation timescales. Computed ab initio adiabatic transition energies are used to assist the assignation of the spectra, while geometry optimisation in the excited electronic states as well as ab initio calculations along the potential surfaces demonstrate the role of ππ*/πσ* coupling and/or large geometry changes in the dynamics of these species. Evidence supporting the formation of Dewar valence isomers as intermediates involved in sub-picosecond relaxation processes is discussed.

The conformer-selected ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) spectra of protonated noradrenaline were measured using an electrospray/cryogenic ion trap technique combined with photo-dissociation spectroscopy. By comparing the UV photo dissociation (UVPD) spectra with the UV-UV hole burning (HB) spectra, it was found that five conformers coexist under ultra-cold conditions. Based on the spectral features of the IR dip spectra of each conformer, two different conformations on the amine side chain were identified. Three conformers (group I) were assigned to folded and others (group II) to extended structures by comparing the observed IR spectra with the calculated ones. Observation of the significantly less-stable extended conformers strongly suggests that the extended structures are dominant in solution and are detected in the gas phase by kinetic trapping. The conformers in each group are assignable to rotamers of OH orientations in the catechol ring. By comparing the UV-UV HB spectra and the calculated Franck-Condon spectra obtained by harmonic vibrational analysis of the S 1 state, with the aid of relative stabilization energies of each conformer in the S 0 state, the absolute orientations of catechol OHs of the observed five conformers were successfully determined. It was found that the 0-0 transition of one folded conformer is red-shifted by about 1000 cm -1 from the others. The significant red-shift was explained by a large contribution of the πσ* state to S 1 in the conformer in which an oxygen atom of the meta-OH group is close to the ammonium group.

Photofragmentation electronic spectra of isolated single-isomeric N-protonated quinoline (quinolinium) and isoquinoline (isoquinolinium) ions have been measured at a temperature of ∼40 K using a mass-selective, 10 cm -1 spectral resolution, photodissociation spectrometer. Additionally, ab initio adiabatic transition energies calculated using the RI-ADC(2) method have been employed to assist in the assignment of the spectra. Three electronic transitions having ππ* character were clearly evidenced for both protonated ions within the UV and deep-UV spectral ranges. The corresponding spectra at room temperature were previously reported by Hansen et al., together with TD-DFT calculations and a careful analysis of the possible fragmentation mechanisms. This information will be complemented in the present study by appending better resolved spectra, characteristic of cold ions, in which well-defined vibrational progressions associated with the S 1 ← S 0 and S 3 ← S 0 transitions exhibit clear 0-0 bands at hν 0-0 = 27868 and 42230 cm -1 , for protonated quinoline, and at hν 0-0 = 28043 and 41988 cm -1 , for protonated isoquinoline. Active vibrations in the spectra were assigned with the help of calculated normal modes, looking very similar to those of the structurally related protonated naphthalene. Finally, we have observed that the bandwidths associated with the deep-UV S 3 ← S 0 transition denote a lifetime for the S 3 excited state in the subpicosecond time scale, in contrast with that of S 1 .

The ground-state dissociation energy, D0(S0), of isolated intermolecular complexes in the gas phase is a fundamental measure of the interaction strength between the molecules. We have developed a three-laser, triply resonant pump-dump-probe technique to measure dissociation energies of jet-cooled M•S complexes, where M is an aromatic chromophore and S is a closed-shell 'solvent' molecule. Stimulated emission pumping (SEP) via the S0→S1 electronic transition is used to precisely 'warm' the complex by populating high vibrational levels v" of the S0 state. If the deposited energy E(v") is less than D0(S0), the complex remains intact, and is then mass- and isomer-selectively detected by resonant two-photon ionization (R2PI) with a third (probe) laser. If the pumped level is above D0(S0), the hot complex dissociates and the probe signal disappears. Combining the fluorescence or SEP spectrum of the cold complex with the SEP breakoff of the hot complex brackets D0(S0). The UV chromophores 1-naphthol and carbazole were employed; these bind either dispersively via the aromatic rings, or form a hydrogen bond via the -OH or -NH group. Dissociation energies have been measured for dispersively bound complexes with noble gases (Ne, Kr, Ar, Xe), diatomics (N2, CO), alkanes (methane to n-butane), cycloalkanes (cyclopropane to cycloheptane), and unsaturated compounds (ethene, benzene). Hydrogen-bond dissociation energies have been measured for H2O, D2O, methanol, ethanol, ethers (oxirane, oxetane), NH3 and ND3.

The 1-naphthol⋅cyclopropane intermolecular complex is formed in a supersonic jet and investigated by resonant two-photon ionization (R2PI) spectroscopy, UV holeburning, and stimulated emission pumping (SEP)-R2PI spectroscopy. Two very different structure types are inferred from the vibronic spectra and calculations. In the "edge" isomer, the OH group of 1-naphthol is directed towards a C-C bond of cyclopropane, the two ring planes are perpendicular. In the "face" isomer, the cyclopropane is adsorbed on one of the π-aromatic faces of the 1-naphthol moiety, the ring planes are nearly parallel. Accurate ground-state intermolecular dissociation energies D 0 were measured with the SEP-R2PI technique. The D 0 (S 0 ) of the edge isomer is bracketed as 15.35 ± 0.03 kJ/mol, while that of the face isomer is 16.96 ± 0.12 kJ/mol. The corresponding excited-state dissociation energies D 0 (S 1 ) were evaluated using the respective electronic spectral shifts. Despite the D 0 (S 0 ) difference of 1.6 kJ/mol, both isomers are observed in the jet in similar concentrations, so they must be separated by substantial potential energy barriers. Intermolecular binding energies, D e , and dissociation energies, D 0 , calculated with correlated wave function methods and two dispersion-corrected density-functional methods are evaluated in the context of these results. The density functional calculations suggest that the face isomer is bound solely by dispersion interactions. Binding of the edge isomer is also dominated by dispersion, which makes up two thirds of the total binding energy.

Gas phase photodissociation electronic spectra of protonated azobenzene (ABH(+)) and 4-(dimethylamino)azobenzene (dmaABH(+)) were measured in a cryogenically cooled ion trap at temperatures of a few tens of Kelvin. Experimental results were complemented with electronic structure calculations in the ground state at the MP2/cc-pVDZ level of theory, and in the low lying excited states using the RI-CC2 method. Calculated energies revealed that only the trans isomers of the azonium molecular ions (protonation site on the azo group) will likely exist in the trap at the temperatures achieved in the experiment. The first transition of trans-ABH(+) is π* ← π, and the absorption band in the spectrum appears strongly red-shifted from that of the neutral molecule. The calculations showed that upon excitation the quasi-planar ground state (S0) transforms into a chairlike excited state (S1) by twisting the CNNC dihedral angle about 96°. A 41 cm(-1) active vibrational progression found in the ABH(+) spectrum may be associated with the twisting of the azo bond. Conversely, the electronic spectrum of dmaABH(+) exhibits a steep and unstructured S1 ← S0 absorption corresponding to a less distorted S1 state. The next two quasi-degenerate bands in the ABH(+) spectrum evidence sharper onsets and a charge transfer character. Using a second fragmentation laser and an additional He cooling pulse in the trap, it was possible to measure the UV spectrum of cold benzenediazonium fragments.

The best determination of the most stable protonation site in aromatic molecules relies nowadays on the IR spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. It appears that these methods are not necessarily unambiguous and cannot always be safely employed. We present in this paper an example showing that electronic spectroscopy of cold ions complemented with ab initio calculations gives clear results on the protonation site. In the example given on the aminophenol isomers (in ortho, meta and para positions), the protonation site is assigned from the electronic spectroscopy and in particular we show that for the meta isomer the proton is not on the amino group as observed for the other isomers. It shows also that the protonation site is not conserved in the electrospray evaporation-ionization process.

The geometric and electronic structures of cold host-guest complex ions of crown ethers (CEs) in the gas phase have been investigated by ultraviolet (UV) fragmentation spectroscopy. As host CEs, we chose 15-crown-5 (15C5), 18-crown-6 (18C6), 24-crown-8 (24C8), and dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8), and as guests protonated-aniline (aniline·H(+)) and protonated-dibenzylamine (dBAM·H(+)) were chosen. The ions generated by an electrospray ionization (ESI) source were cooled in a quadrupole ion-trap (QIT) using a cryogenic cooler, and UV spectra were obtained by UV photodissociation (UVPD) spectroscopy. UV spectroscopy was complemented by quantum chemical calculations of the most probable complex structures. The UV spectrum of aniline·H(+)·CEs is very sensitive to the symmetry of CEs; aniline·H(+)·18C6 shows a sharp electronic spectrum similar to aniline·H(+), while aniline·H(+)·15C5 shows a very broad structure with poor Franck-Condon factors. In addition, a remarkable cage effect in the fragmentation process after UV excitation was observed in both complex ions. In aniline·H(+)·CE complexes, the cage effect completely removed the dissociation channels of the aniline·H(+) moiety. A large difference in the fragmentation yield between dBAM·H(+)·18C6 and dBAM·H(+)·24C8 was observed due to a large barrier for releasing dBAM·H(+) from the axis of rotaxane in the latter complex.

The photo-induced damages of DNA in interaction with metal cations, which are found in various environments, still remain to be characterized. In this paper, we show how the complexation of a DNA base (cytosine (Cyt)) with a metal cation (Ag(+)) changes its electronic properties. By means of UV photofragment spectroscopy of cold ions, it was found that the photoexcitation of the CytAg(+) complex at low energy (315-282) nm efficiently leads to ionized cytosine (Cyt(+)) as the single product. This occurs through a charge transfer state in which an electron from the p orbital of Cyt is promoted to Ag(+), as confirmed by ab initio calculations at the TD-DFT/B3LYP and RI-ADC(2) theory level using the SV(P) basis set. The low ionization energy of Cyt in the presence of Ag(+) could have important implications as point mutation of DNA upon sunlight exposition.

The electronic spectroscopy and the electronic excited state properties of cold protonated phenylalanine and protonated tyrosine have been revisited on a large spectral domain and interpreted by comparison with ab initio calculations. The protonated species are stored in a cryogenically cooled Paul trap, maintained at ∼10 K, and the parent and all the photofragment ions are mass-analyzed in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer, which allows detecting the ionic species with an improved mass resolution compared to what is routinely achieved with a quadrupole mass spectrometer. These new results emphasize the competition around the band origin between two proton transfer reactions from the ammonium group toward either the aromatic chromophore or the carboxylic acid group. These reactions are initiated by the coupling of the locally excited ππ* state with higher charge transfer states, the positions and coupling of which depend on the conformation of the protonated molecules. Each of these reaction processes gives rise to specific fragmentation channels that supports the conformer selectivity observed in the photofragmentation spectra of protonated tyrosine and phenylalanine.

We are presenting the electronic photofragment spectra of the protonated pyrimidine DNA base homodimers. Only the thymine dimer exhibits a well structured vibrational progression, while the protonated monomer shows broad vibrational bands. This shows that proton bonding can block some nonradiative processes present in the monomer.

This study reports on the determination of trace element (TE)-Li, As, Co, Cs, Cu, Pb, U, and Zn-and major element (ME)-Si, Al, Fe, Mg, Ca, Mn, Na, and K-concentrations in 18 riverbed sediments and a sediment core from the Var River catchment using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results were compared with those of a reference sediment core, and the contribution of clay and organic carbon contents in the distribution of TE and ME in the sediment samples was investigated. The mean concentrations of the ME were comparable in both core and riverbed samples and were within the natural averages. In the case of TE, the concentrations were lower in riverbed sediment samples than those found in the sediment core. High mean concentration of As was observed (7.6 μg g(-1)) in both core and riverbed sediments, relatively higher than the worldwide reported values. The obtained data indicated that the natural high level of arsenic might be originated from the parent rocks, especially metamorphic rocks surrounding granites and from Permian sediments. Statistical approach, viz., Pearson correlation matrix, was applied to better understand the correlation among TE in both riverbed and sediment core samples. No significant metallic contamination was detected in the low Var valley despite of the localization of several industrial facilities. Therefore, results confirm that the concentrations of the TE obtained in the riverbed sediments could be considered as a baseline guide for future pollution monitoring program.
