1. Review and Selection of Online Resources for Carers of Frail Adults or Older People in Five European Countries: Mixed-Methods Study

Abstract

BackgroundInformal carers have a crucial role in the care of older people, but they are at risk of social isolation and psychological exhaustion. Web-based services like apps and websites are increasingly used to support informal carers in addressing some of their needs and tasks, such as health monitoring of their loved ones, information and communication, and stress management. Despite the growing number of available solutions, the lack of knowledge or skills of carers about the solutions often prevent their usage. ObjectiveThis study aimed to review and select apps and websites offering functionalities useful for informal carers of frail adults or older people in 5 European countries (Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Sweden). MethodsA systematic online search was conducted from January 2017 to mid-March 2017 using selected keywords, followed by an assessment based on a set of commonly agreed criteria and standardized tools. Selected resources were rated and classified in terms of scope. Focus groups with informal carers were conducted to validate the list and the classification of resources. The activities were conducted in parallel in the participating countries using common protocols and guidelines, a standardization process, and scheduled group discussions. ResultsFrom a total of 406 eligible resources retrieved, 138 apps and 86 websites met the inclusion criteria. Half of the selected resources (109/224, 48.7%) were disease-specific, and the remaining resources included information and utilities on a variety of themes. Only 38 resources (38/224, 17.0%) were devoted specifically to carers, addressing the management of health disturbances and diseases of the care recipient and focusing primarily on neurodegenerative diseases. Focus groups with the carers showed that almost all participants had no previous knowledge of any resource specifically targeting carers, even if interest was expressed towards carer-focused resources. The main barriers for using the resources were low digital skills of the carers and reliability of health-related apps and websites. Results of the focus groups led to a new taxonomy of the resources, comprising 4 categories: carer’s wellbeing, managing health and diseases of the care recipient, useful contacts, and technologies for eldercare. ConclusionsThe review process allowed the identification of online resources of good quality. However, these resources are still scarce due to a lack of reliability and usability that prevent users from properly benefiting from most of the resources. The involvement of end users provided added value to the resource classification and highlighted the gap between the potential benefits from using information and communication technologies and the real use of online resources by carers.

2. How Caregivers of People With Dementia Search for Dementia-Specific Information on the Internet: Survey Study

BackgroundDuring the last decade, more research has focused on web-based interventions delivered to support caregivers of people with dementia. However, little information is available in relation to internet use among caregivers in general, especially those caring for people with dementia. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to evaluate the dementia-related internet use and factors that may be associated with its use among caregivers of people with dementia in Greece. MethodsSecondary data from the Greek Dementia Survey of the Athens Association of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders were collected from April to June 2017. A total of 580 caregivers of people with dementia participated in the study. ResultsThe majority of the caregivers reported that they had used the internet in the previous 3 months (84.1%, 488/580). Nearly half of the caregivers (47.5%, 276/580) reported that they had received dementia services online. Bivariate analysis showed that a dementia-specific search of information was associated with age, education, kinship, and years of care. Age (odds ratio [OR] 2.362, 95% CI 1.05-5.33) and education (OR 2.228, 95% CI 1.01-4.94) were confirmed as predictors, with younger caregivers and those with higher educational attainment being more likely to search for dementia-specific information. Use of the internet to search for dementia information was only related to hours of care. The internet use by caregivers within the previous 3 months was associated with variables such as age, education, occupation, kinship, years of care, and self-reported impact on physical and social health. ConclusionsCaregivers of people with dementia in Greece, as in the other southern European countries, are essential agents of the national health system. The existing short- and long-term respite care services are limited or nonexistent. Currently, caregivers receive mostly support and education from memory clinics and municipality consultation centers, which are mainly based in central cities in Greece. Despite the dementia awareness movement in Greece, there is still space to integrate the role of technology in the support and education of caregivers. Development of training programs for enhancing electronic health literacy skills as well as web-based services provision could support Greek caregivers in their everyday caring tasks.

Abstract

A growing body of literature has acknowledged that a high number of populations with low Health Literacy (HL) is related to poor health outcomes, inequities in healthcare and high economic costs. Those findings have formulated the research questions of this review: (i) what ethical issues arise within the context of patients' HL and (ii) What is the relationship between HL and quality of life? This review followed the guidelines of Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) and the Preferred Reporting Items for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) and it was conducted in five databases: PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE, Scopus and Science Direct between June 2022 and December 2023. Out of the 3164 titles retrieved, 285 abstracts were eligible to proceed. Following a thorough examination of the full text of 61 papers, 45 sources were identified that met the inclusion criteria. The data analysis process was guided by the research questions, employing a thematic approach. Four themes were identified: the use of language and patient understanding, human rights, the principlism approach (justice, beneficence, non-maleficence and autonomy) and quality of life. The first theme mainly focused on the relation of HL with the notion of consent forms and national action plans. Human rights in relation to HL were discussed as a minor issue. The bioethical framework by Beauchamp and Childress (Principles of Biomedical Ethics, 6th edn. Oxford University Press, New York, NY, 2009), was addressed by several studies, with a particular focus on justice and the loss of autonomy. Quality of life indicated a positive correlation with HL by most of the authors, while few studies revealed a moderate correlation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Strengthening the health literacy (HL) skills of the healthcare users is a multicomponent process involving the users, the healthcare professionals, the stakeholders, and the environment. Health organizations, universities, private initiatives, and funded projects focused on developing and implementing continuing education courses target at increasing healthcare professionals' HL. This scoping review aimed at reporting the HL continuing education courses for healthcare professionals to enhance their knowledge and skills in identifying and supporting healthcare users with limited HL, and particularly, older people. This review followed the five stages by Arksey and O'Malley framework and the guidelines by Joanna Briggs Institute for scoping reviews. Peer-reviewed papers and gray literature published between years 2000 to 2020 were included in this bibliometric search utilizing four electronic databases (PUBMED, MEDLINE, CINAHL, PSYCHINFO, and Opengrey). Twenty-seven (27) papers met the criteria, including twenty-one (21) full-texts and six (6) other records (website contents, eLearning, and funded projects). There is a lack of HL tools that address the training needs of healthcare professionals working with older adults. Abstract

Background. The increased comorbidities among older people are related to the longer life expectancy and the way a condition is defined. People who live longer and remain healthy express different needs from older people of previous decades. Objective. This study aims to present the profile of the older person in contemporary society and the careworkers' humanistic training needs. Methodology. The focus group methodology was selected. Twelve focus groups consisted of 69 participants over 60 years old in total and six focus groups of 41 careworkers in total, from Italy, Portugal, Finland, Romania, UK, and Cyprus, were conducted. A content analysis was used. Results. A profile of the older person living in the above stated countries was revealed with the "New Old" being financially independent, active with a healthy lifestyle, more informed and educated in relation to the past, liking social interactions, open-minded to new relationships, volunteering for non-for-profit associations, using technology, or wanting to learn how to use. However, older people in these countries were still experiencing ageism (discrimination, ignorance, and social exclusion) and lack of respect. Care workers also expressed their views in relation to the training needs that meets this new profile of older people including basic nursing skills, daily living activities, humanistic, person-centered care, social skills, and ICT competence. Conclusions. This multicenter focus group discussions study promoted the concept of the older person in contemporary society and the importance of humanistic care. A new definition of the older person and an adaptation of the training curricula for careworkers Job certification including the person-centered approach is required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Health literacy has become an important research field in public health and health care. People with low levels of health literacy utilize more health services, visit emergency rooms more frequently, have longer hospital stays, and are less likely to adhere to treatment plans. In Greece and Cyprus, research on this topic has become popular only in the last decade, in comparison with the United States of America (USA), the United Kingdom (UK), Australia, and China. A core issue in the Greek language is the use of common terminology in medical research. For this reason, a consensus group was organized to validate the work of the Greek team participating in the Health Literacy Survey in Europe (HLS-EU) concerning the terminology of health literacy. The consensus group will suggest a common means of assessment in Greece and Cyprus, and discuss future research and the role of all the relevant stakeholders in health literacy interventions and dissemination of the common Greek terminology.

Abstract

The objective of Working Group (WG) 4 of the COST Action NET4Age-Friendly is to examine existing policies, advocacy, and funding opportunities and to build up relations with policy makers and funding organisations. Also, to synthesize and improve existing knowledge and models to develop from effective business and evaluation models, as well as to guarantee quality and education, proper dissemination and ensure the future of the Action. The Working Group further aims to enable capacity building to improve interdisciplinary participation, to promote knowledge exchange and to foster a cross-European interdisciplinary research capacity, to improve cooperation and co-creation with cross-sectors stakeholders and to introduce and educate students SHAFE implementation and sustainability (CB01, CB03, CB04, CB05). To enable the achievement of the objectives of Working Group 4, the Leader of the Working Group, the Chair and Vice-Chair, in close cooperation with the Science Communication Coordinator, developed a template (see annex 1) to map the current state of SHAFE policies, funding opportunities and networking in the COST member countries of the Action. On invitation, the Working Group lead received contributions from 37 countries, in a total of 85 Action members. The contributions provide an overview of the diversity of SHAFE policies and opportunities in Europe and beyond. These were not edited or revised and are a result of the main areas of expertise and knowledge of the contributors; thus, gaps in areas or content are possible and these shall be further explored in the following works and reports of this WG. But this preliminary mapping is of huge importance to proceed with the WG activities. In the following chapters, an introduction on the need of SHAFE policies is presented, followed by a summary of the main approaches to be pursued for the next period of work. Abstract

The objective of Working Group (WG) 4 of the COST Action NET4Age-Friendly is to examine existing policies, advocacy, and funding opportunities and to build up relations with policy makers and funding organisations. Also, to synthesize and improve existing knowledge and models to develop from effective business and evaluation models, as well as to guarantee quality and education, proper dissemination and ensure the future of the Action. The Working Group further aims to enable capacity building to improve interdisciplinary participation, to promote knowledge exchange and to foster a cross-European interdisciplinary research capacity, to improve cooperation and co-creation with cross-sectors stakeholders and to introduce and educate students SHAFE implementation and sustainability (CB01, CB03, CB04, CB05). To enable the achievement of the objectives of Working Group 4, the Leader of the Working Group, the Chair and Vice-Chair, in close cooperation with the Science Communication Coordinator, developed a template (see annex 1) to map the current state of SHAFE policies, funding opportunities and networking in the COST member countries of the Action. On invitation, the Working Group lead received contributions from 37 countries, in a total of 85 Action members. The contributions provide an overview of the diversity of SHAFE policies and opportunities in Europe and beyond. These were not edited or revised and are a result of the main areas of expertise and knowledge of the contributors; thus, gaps in areas or content are possible and these shall be further explored in the following works and reports of this WG. But this preliminary mapping is of huge importance to proceed with the WG activities. In the following chapters, an introduction on the need of SHAFE policies is presented, followed by a summary of the main approaches to be pursued for the next period of work. The deliverable finishes with the opportunities of capacity building, networking and funding that will be relevant to undertake within the frame of Working Group 4 and the total COST Action. The total of country contributions is presented in the annex of this deliverable.

Abstract

Health literacy (HL) and eHealth literacy (eHL) can facilitate carers of people with dementia (PwD) to search, find, assess and apply information related to dementia‐specific issues from different resources. There is a lack of research with regard to HL and eHL among carers of PwD. The aim of this study is to identify the levels of HL and eHL among carers of PwD in Greece and Cyprus and to search for the associations with other caring concepts. This study followed a descriptive correlational design. In total, 174 primary informal carers of PwD, mostly women, over 45 years old and with more than 12 years of education and 67 secondary carers (family, friends or neighbours) participated in the study. Primary informal carers completed a face‐to‐face survey on the level of HL and eHL, internet use, dementia‐specific internet use, care‐giving self‐efficacy, coping strategies, care‐giving perceptions and social support. Primary informal carers reported a high level of eHL and HL. Carers with higher HL were more likely to report higher score of eHL, care‐giving self‐efficacy and lower score of problematic/dysfunctional coping. Higher score of eHeals‐Carer "information seeking" was related with higher use of emotion‐focused strategies. From this study, a positive message was received with regard to the role of HL and eHL in the everyday caring life. Non‐for‐profit organisations and healthcare professionals could integrate in their practice assessment tools and develop tailored training courses for carers enhancing low level of HL and eHL. Abstract

New web-based services emerge to support carers in their role, but little is known regarding the way that carers use the internet or any related services. In an effort, to improve the health-related digital skills of carers aiming to support their caring role, we have developed eHealth Literacy Learning Skills among Carers of People with Dementia, the eLILY project. This paper presents the findings of a modified Delphi survey planned and delivered in the framework of the project as an effort to integrate stakeholders' knowledge and expertise in the proposed curriculum.

Abstract

Τις δύο τελευταίες δεκαετίες, υπάρχει αύξηση των τεχνολογικών καινοτομιών. Η προσβασιμότητα σε ευάλωτες ομάδες αποτελεί προτεραιότητα για τους εκπαιδευτές και τους επαγγελματίες υγείας. Η πρόσβαση υπηρεσιών μέσω του διαδικτύου θα μπορούσε να διευκολύνει τους οικογενειακούς φροντιστές ατόμων με άνοια στην καθημερινότητα τους. Οι φροντιστές ατόμων με άνοια αντιμετωπίζουν τις συνέπειες της επιβάρυνσης της φροντίδας, συναισθήματα άγχους, κατάθλιψης, ενοχής, κάνουν αυξημένη χρήση αντικαταθλιπτικών και είναι πιο επιρρεπείς σε λοιμώξεις σε σύγκριση με τον γενικό πληθυσμό. Επιπρόσθετα αντιμετωπίζουν προβλήματα στη φροντίδα των ασθενών λόγω της φύσης της νόσου και των συνοδών προβλημάτων μνήμης και συμπεριφοράς τους. Οι υπηρεσίες για φροντιστές μπορεί να περιλαμβάνουν εκπαιδευτικές πλατφόρμες και ιστοσελίδες, μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης και άλλες διαδραστικές υπηρεσίες, υπηρεσίες τηλεϊατρικής και εφαρμογές για στήριξη και νοητική ενδυνάμωση. Η προσφορά και η ζήτηση αυτών των υπηρεσιών διαφοροποιείται στις χώρες της Ευρωπαϊκής ένωσης και επηρεάζονται από τις ψηφιακές δεξιότητες και τις στάσεις του πληθυσμού στην τεχνολογία. Η Εγγραμματοσύνη σε θέματα για την υγεία (Health Literacy-HL) και η Ψηφιακή Εγγραμματοσύνη σε θέματα για την υγεία (eHealth Literacy-eHL) είναι δύο έννοιες που μπορούν να διευκολύνουν τους φροντιστές να ψάξουν, να βρουν , να αξιολογήσουν και να εφαρμόσουν πληροφορίες σχετικές με την άνοια μέσω διαφορετικών πηγών (φίλοι, συγγενείς, γείτονες, επαγγελματίες υγείας, διαδίκτυο). Αυτή η μελέτη ερευνά το επίπεδο της Εγγραμματοσύνης σε θέματα για την υγεία (HL) και την Ψηφιακή Εγγραμματοσύνη σε θέματα για την υγεία (eHL) και τις συσχετίσεις τους με τις άλλες μεταβλητές για τη φροντίδα. Η έρευνα είναι μία περιγραφική μελέτη συσχετίσεων και η μεθοδολογία ακολουθεί 5 φάσεις. Αρχικά, πραγματοποιήθηκαν 2 αναζητήσεις διερεύνησης και δύο βιβλιογραφικές αναζητήσεις για την εύρεση σχετικών μελετών. Κατά δεύτερον, εγκυροποιήθηκαν τα εργαλεία που δεν ήταν διαθέσιμα στην Ελληνική γλώσσα. Η τρίτη φάση περιελάμβανε την ομάδα σύγκλισης απόψεων για την ελληνική ορολογία του Health Literacy και eHealth Literacy. Στη συνέχεια, ακολούθησαν η πιλοτική και η έρευνα πεδίου. Συνολικά, 174 πρωτοβάθμιοι φροντιστές ατόμων με άνοια (76% γυναίκες, ν=132) και 67 δευτεροβάθμιοι φροντιστές (οικογένεια, φίλοι, γείτονες που στηρίζουν τους πρωτοβάθμιους φροντιστές και τα άτομα με άνοια) συμμετείχαν στη μελέτη. Οι πρωτοβάθμιοι φροντιστές συμπλήρωσαν μία δια ζώσης έρευνα για το επίπεδο της HL και της eHL, τη χρήση του διαδικτύου, τη χρήση του διαδικτύου για την εύρεση πληροφοριών για την άνοια, την αυτό-αποτελεσματικότητα στη φροντίδα, τις στρατηγικές αντιμετώπισης, τις αντιλήψεις για τη φροντίδα και την κοινωνική στήριξη. Οι δευτεροβάθμιοι φροντιστές συμπλήρωσαν την έρευνα για την HL, την eHL και δημογραφικά στοιχεία. Σε αυτή την έρευνα, οι πρωτοβάθμιοι φροντιστές αναφέραν υψηλό επίπεδο eHL (29.21/40, Τ.Α=4.8) και HL (13.64/16, Τ.Α.=1.92). Παρόμοια αποτελέσματα αναφέρουν και οι δευτεροβάθμιοι φροντιστές (eHL =30.54/40, Τ.Α.=4.34 and HL=13.09, Τ.Α.=2.05). Η ανάλυση συστάδων εμφάνισε 3 προφίλ φροντιστών: 1) φροντιστές με υψηλή HL, eHL και αυτό- αποτελεσματικότητα, 2) φροντιστές με προβληματικές στρατηγικές αντιμετώπισης και αρνητικές αντιλήψεις για τη φροντίδα, 3) φροντιστές με υψηλή HL, eHL και ισχυρό κοινωνικό δίκτυο. Οι φροντιστές με υψηλή HL ήταν πιο πιθανό να δηλώσουν υψηλή eHL, αυτό-αποτελεσματικότητα για την ανακουφιστική φροντίδα και τη διαχείριση των διαταραχών συμπεριφοράς. Οι φροντιστές με υψηλή eHL είναι πιο πιθανό να δηλώσουν θετικές αντιλήψεις για τη φροντίδα και στρατηγικές αντιμετώπισης εστιασμένες στο συναίσθημα. Οι φροντιστές ατόμων με άνοια σε αυτό το δείγμα ανέφερε ικανοποιητικό επίπεδο HL και eHL, μιας και δρουν για τη φροντίδα ενός άλλου ανθρώπου. Οι υπηρεσίες που είναι σχεδιασμένες να καλύπτουν τις ανάγκες του πληθυσμού με αυτό το προφίλ HL και eHL θα μπορούσαν να ενισχύσουν την βιωσιμότητα των υπηρεσιών μέσω διαδικτύου. Επιπλέον, οι νοσηλευτές και άλλοι επαγγελματίες υγείας εάν αποκτήσουν τα εργαλεία αναγνώρισης φροντιστών με χαμηλή HL, θα μπορούσαν να παρέχουν υπηρεσίες σχεδιασμένες για τις ανάγκες των φροντιστών και την ενίσχυση των HL δεξιοτήτων τους. During these two last decades, there is an increase in health technological advances. Making them accessible to groups with vulnerability is a priority for educators and health care professionals. Access to web-based services could facilitate the informal carers of PwD in their everyday life. Carers of PwD are facing the consequences of the burden of care, feelings of anxiety, depression, guilt, make higher use of antidepressants and are more vulnerable to infections than the general population. Web-based services for informal carers may include training platforms and diseasespecific websites, forums, social networks and other interactive services, telehealth, telemedicine, applications for support and cognitive rehabilitation. The offer and demand for these services are differentiated among European countries. They are influenced by the digital skills and attitudes of the population towards technology. Health Literacy (HL) and eHealth literacy (eHL) are two concepts that can facilitate carers to search, find, assess and apply information related to dementiaspecific issues from different resources (friends, family, neighbours, health professionals, internet). This study investigates the level of HL and eHL and the associations with other caregiving variables. The study used a descriptive correlational study design and the methodology followed 5 phases. Initially, two scoping and two literature reviews organised to identify available research. Secondly, tools not available in Greek or for the specific population of carers were validated. The third phase included the consensus meeting on the terminology of eHealth Literacy and Health Literacy. Then, the pilot and the full-scale study followed. In total, 174 primary carers of PwD, (76% women, n=132) and 67 secondary carers (family, friend or neighbour who provide support to the primary carer and to the care-recipient), participated in a descriptive correlational study. Primary carers completed a face to face survey for the level of HL, eHL, internet use, dementia-specific internet use, caregiving self-efficacy (SE), coping strategies, caregiving perceptions and social support. Secondary carers completed the survey for HL, eHL and demographics. In this study, primary carers report a high level of eHL (29.21/40, SD=4.8) and HL (13.64/16, SD=1.92). The above is also the case for the secondary carers (eHL=30.54/40, SD=4.34 and HL=13.09, SD=2.05). The cluster analysis presented with 3 carers’ profiles: 1) carer with High HL, eHL and SE 2) carers with problematic coping and negative caregiving attitudes 3) carers with High HL, eHL and a strong Social Network. Carers with higher HL were more likely to report higher score of eHL, SEOR and SE-BM. Carers with higher eHL were more likely to report higher score of positive perceptions towards caring and emotion-focused coping. Carers of PwD in this sample, report an adequate level of HL and eHL, as they may act on behalf of the care-recipient. Services designed to meet the needs of a population with this HL and eHL profile could assist in the sustainability of the web-based services. Furthermore, nurses and other health care professionals if they obtain the tools to identify informal carers with low HL, could provide more tailored services according to carers’ needs and enhance their HL skills. Abstract

InformCare is a European Web platform that supports informal caregivers of older people by providing access to online information and professional and peer support. The aim of this study was to assess the usage and usability of a psychosocial Web-based program carried out in three European countries (Italy, Sweden, and Germany). A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was adopted, comprising baseline and postintervention assessments, as well as combined thematic content analysis of results and focus group findings. A convenience sample of 118 caregivers was enrolled, of whom 94 used the services offered by the program at least once. The subsamples in the three countries used the platform in different ways, with a predominance of passive strategies (eg, seeking information and reading other people's comments) for Italian caregivers, and more active usage by Swedish and German caregivers. The usability assessment showed that the platform was perceived well by Italian and German caregivers, whereas technical problems affected the Swedish sample's experiences. Focus group data highlighted user satisfaction with the online support and reliability of the environment. Recommendations for practitioners are to ensure digital training for caregivers who have lower confidence in use of the Internet, to involve different healthcare professionals in the provision of professional support, and to adequately manage online community building.

Abstract

This contribution provides insights from one of the four social innovations of the INNOVAGE project, focused on the development of the InformCare web platform for supporting informal caregivers of older people in Europe. The platform included information resources on different topics (major diseases in older age, public care services and benefits, coping and reconciliation strategies etc.) and interactive services for professional and peer support (dedicated social network, forum, chat and videochat). The design phase was based on a consultation process involving almost 200 stakeholders and on user tests. The pilot phase was carried out as a mixed-methods study in Germany, Italy and Sweden, which recruited totally 118 caregivers who could access the InformCare platform for 3 months. Positive findings led to its refinement and implementation in 27 European countries. Today, the platform is publicly accessible (www.eurocarers.org/informcare) in 32 versions and 23 languages, with over 2,500 web pages for informal caregivers.

An enormous amount of responsibility and care activity is on the shoulders of family caregivers, who might experience problems in their psychological well-being and in reconciling caregiving and their personal sphere. In order to alleviate such burden, there is increasing interest and growing research in Europe on Web-based support addressing family caregivers and their needs. However, the level of development and penetration of innovative Web-based services for caregivers is still quite low and the access to traditional face-to-face services can be problematic for logistic, availability, and quality reasons. Objective: As part of the European project INNOVAGE, a pilot study was conducted for developing and testing a Web-based psychosocial intervention aimed at empowering family caregivers of older people in Italy, Sweden, and Germany. The program offered information resources and interactive services to enable both professional and peer support. Methods: A mixed-methods, sequential explanatory design was adopted. Caregivers psychological well-being, perceived negative and positive aspects of caregiving, and social support received were assessed before and after the 3-month intervention. Poststudy, a subsample of users participated in focus groups to assist in the interpretation of the quantitative results. Results: A total of 94 out of 118 family caregivers (79.7%) from the three countries used the Web platform at least once. Abstract

AIMS. The goal of this study was to develop and test a new multilingual web platform for supporting family carers of older people by means of on-line information resources and peer and professional support. METHODS. A convenient sample of family carers was enrolled in three countries (Italy, Germany and Sweden) and could access services for 3 months. 94 family carers used the web platform. Data were collected through questionnaires and focus groups. FINDINGS. Active users were generally satisfied with support (information, advice, counselling) provided by moderators (social workers or psychologists) and peers. Usability and appropriateness were confirmed, although some refinements were suggested and users with low digital skills often needed technical support. CONCLUSIONS. The pilot study confirmed web-based support services can be a useful tool for family carers. Abstract

Background: Eurocarers is an European non-profit association representing informal carers. It was officially established in 2006 and includes user organisations, research institutions and individual members addressing and working on the issue of informal care. Eurocarers participates in the work package 3 (WP3) of the INNOVAGE project, aiming to develop and disseminate a multilingual web platform for informal carers in 27 Member States of the European Union (EU). Methods: A wide networking activity was carried out in 2013-2014 for identifying and involving at least one user organisation in each country of the EU-27, which could take over responsibility of single national versions of the platform. 29 carers organisations were involved in implementation, as well as in developing country-based contents for the information resources area. Results: Information resource area will be implemented in the EU-27 in all official languages and updated progressively by organisations. Each organisation will implement a set of interactive services, depending on country peculiarities and available resources. A further dissemination phase will follow, based on a multilayered approach: one EU event will take place in 2015, followed by national events and other local activities. Conclusions: A fundamental role in the development and dissemination of web-based support services for carers is played by the activation of a strong and comprehensive network of organisations. Characteristics of the internet have the potential to strengthen collaboration between stakeholders and converge efforts for improving level of support services in countries with less cultural, social and policy recognition of carers’ role in the society.

Background: Family carers can be negatively influenced by their situation, in terms of stress, social isolation, economic constraints and other difficulties. Web-based services addressing carers’ needs represent an efficient support. The goal of the INNOVAGE work package 3(WP3) study was to develop and test a new multilingual web platform for supporting family carers of older people, to be implemented in 27 European countries. Methods: A review of good practices and a consultation with stakeholders were conducted for identifying most appropriate types of services to be developed and tested. The prototype of web platform included information resources and interactive services for both peer and professional support. A convenient, overall sample of around 130 family carers was enrolled in three countries (Italy, Germany and Sweden) and could access services for 12-17 weeks. Data were collected through questionnaires and focus groups concerning impact onquality of life, social support, self-perception of carer’s role, as well as usability, usefulness and appropriateness of services. Results: Active users were generally satisfied with support (information, advice, counselling) provided by moderators (social workers or psychologists) and peers. Usability and appropriateness were confirmed, although some refinements were suggested and users with low digital skills often needed technical support. A portion of the sample remained inactive even if stimulation strategies were adopted. Conclusions: The pilot study confirmed the INNOVAGE Eurocarers web platform is a useful tool for family carers. Some challenges still exist for implementation in relation to digital skills required and users’ preferences on services at country level.

Abstract

Informal care is a hot topic in research and policy agendas at European and national level, since it greatly contributes to the sustainability and efficiency of national health care systems. A specific intervention – part of the wider INNOVAGE project funded by FP7 – was planned for developing and testing a new multilingual web platform for informal carers of dependent older people in the EU-27. Preliminary results of the pilot study, conducted in Italy, Germany and Sweden will be discussed. The final platform will be accessible in all official languages of the EU-27 and publicly available in spring 2015.

Abstract

The INNOVAGE project is dedicated to developing, surveying and cataloguing, social innovations for older people. Four new innovations will be developed and tested: a) social innovation for user – driven housing of older people, b) a web-platform for informal carers of older people, c) social intervention for improving obesity in old age, d) social innovation for activation of people with dementia living in long term care institutions. Italian National Institute of Health and Science on Aging (INRCA) (www.inrca.it) and Eurocarers Association (www.eurocarers.org) are the partners responsible for developing and implementing a multilingual web platform for informal carers in 27 EU Member States. An innovAge carers associations network has been established based on the Eurocarers organisations network. National organizations, members of INNOVAGE network, are responsible for developing national information and disseminating the web platform at national level. Athens Association of Alzheimer‘s Disease and Related Disorders is an official member of the INNOVAGE network and participates in the development of the Greek version of the INNOVAGE web platform. The platform will provide to end-users services such as: national information on care and support services, legal and financial information, information about the most common impairments of older people, strategies and information about coping with caregiving. Interactive services, social network, forum, chat, video conferencing tools will be also available. The Greek version of the web platform will be available in May 2015.
