Digital maps greatly support storytelling about territories, especially when enriched with data describing cultural, societal, and ecological aspects, conveying emotional messages that describe the territory as a whole. Story maps are interactive online digital narratives that can describe a territory beyond its map by enriching the map with text, pictures, videos, and other multimedia information. This paper presents a semi-automatic workflow to produce story maps from textual documents containing territory data. An expert first assembles one territory-contextual document containing text and images. Then, automatic processes use natural language processing and Wikidata services to (i) extract key concepts (entities) and geospatial coordinates associated with the territory, (ii) assemble a logically-ordered sequence of enriched story-map events, and (iii) openly publish online story maps and an interoperable Linked Open Data semantic knowledge base for event exploration and inter-story correlation analyses. Our workflow uses an Open Science-oriented methodology to publish all processes and data. Through our workflow, we produced story maps for the value chains and territories of 23 rural European areas of 16 countries. Through numerical evaluation, we demonstrated that territory experts considered the story maps effective in describing their territories, and appropriate for communicating with citizens and stakeholders.

The paper presents the Story Map Building and Visualizing Tool (SMBVT) that allows users to create story maps within a collaborative environment and a usable Web interface. It is entirely open-source and published as a free-to-use solution. It uses Semantic Web technologies in the back-end system to represent stories through a reference ontology for representing narratives. It builds up a user-shared semantic knowledge base that automatically interconnects all stories and seamlessly enables collaborative story building. Finally, it operates within an Open-Science oriented e-Infrastructure, which enables data and information sharing within communities of narrators, and adds multi-tenancy, multi-user, security, and access-control facilities. SMBVT represents narratives as a network of spatiotemporal events related by semantic relations and standardizes the event descriptions by assigning internationalized resource identifiers (IRIs) to the event components, i.e., the entities that take part in the event (e.g., persons, objects, places, concepts). The tool automatically saves the collected knowledge as a Web Ontology Language (OWL) graph and openly publishes it as Linked Open Data. This feature allows connecting the story events to other knowledge bases. To evaluate and demonstrate our tool, we used it to describe the Apuan Alps territory in Tuscany (Italy). This Science Project (SP) contributes to the estimation of the impacts of the invasive species on the European Biodiversity and Ecosystems. This topic is important for European Green Deal and the new European Biodiversity Strategy. The SP is also linked with the socio-economic issues because of the NIS implications to the local ecosystems and their services, and their societal goods and services. Since many of the above impacts may be of local scale, they may alter common practices in circular economies. The SP is implemented by: (a) Combining different sources of data and information; (b) Using a dual workflow to analyse the data; (c) Integrating its resources with core EOSC services and potentially horizontal services available; (d) Engaging the relevant scientific communities. The users will be able to: (a) Analyse distribution patterns of invasive species from different sources of data; (b) Compare the above patterns; (c) Provide managerial suggestions to relevant authorities; (d) Build on the existing infrastructure to address more complex questions (e.g. future scenarios). speciesLink is a large-scale biodiversity information portal that exists thanks to a broad collaborative network of people and institutions. CRIA's involvement with the scientific community of Brazil and other countries is responsible for the significant results achieved, currently reaching more than 15 million primary biodiversity data records, 95% of which are associated with preserved specimens and about 25% with high-quality digital images. The network provides data on over 200,000 species, of which over 110,000 occur in Brazil. This article describes thematic networks within speciesLink, as well as some of the most useful tools developed. The importance and contributions of speciesLink are outlined, as are concerns about securing stable budgetary support for such biodiversity data e-infrastructures. In den „Orientations towards the first Strategic Plan for Horizon Europe“, dem Stategiepapier der EU-Kommission zum 9. EU-Forschungsrahmenprogramm findet sich zur Bedeutung von Open Science der folgende Satz: „Open science practices will be mainstreamed as the new modus operandi for EU research and innovation.“ Open Science wird die Vorgabe, wie Forschung zukünftig mit Hilfe von digitalen Werkzeugen und Netzwerken getätigt werden soll. Die EU-Kommission ist hier zwar Vorreiter, lokale Fördergeber folgen dem Beispiel allerdings bereits. Für Forschungseinrichtungen bedeutet dies, dass die institutionelle Forschungsinfrastruktur weiterentwickelt werden muss um diesen Vorgaben zu genügen. Im Projekt „e-Infrastructures Austria Plus“ wurden in sieben Arbeitspaketen damit begonnen Know-How und technische Infrastrukturen aufzubauen, die dafür benötigt werden.

Summary: Text mining involves a set of processes that analyze text to extract high‐quality information. Among its large number of applications, there are experiments that tackle big data challenges using complex system architectures. However, text mining approaches are neither easy to discover and use nor easily combinable by end‐users. Furthermore, they should be contextualized within new approaches to science (eg, Open Science) that ensure longevity and reuse of methods and results. This article presents NLPHub, a distributed system that orchestrates and combines several state‐of‐the‐art text mining services that recognize spatiotemporal events, keywords, and a large set of named entities. NLPHub adopts an Open Science approach, which fosters the reproducibility, repeatability, and reusability of methods and results, by using an e‐Infrastructure supporting data‐intensive Science. NLPHub adds Open Science‐compliance to the connected services through the use of representational standards for services and computations. It also manages heterogeneous service access policies and enables collaboration and sharing facilities. This article reports a performance assessment based on an annotated corpus of named entities, which demonstrates that NLPHub can improve the performance of the single‐integrated processes by cleverly combining their output. Report from the last „EOSCpilot Stakeholders Forum“, 21st and 22ndNovember 2018 at the Austria Center in Vienna. One day before the launch of the „European Open Science Cloud“ (EOSC) under the Austrian EU Council Presiden-cy, this event presented how far the initiatives for implementing this ambitious pro-ject have come. Presentations on governance and technical implementation alterna-ted with discussions on unresolved or unfinished topics and gave a foretaste of how meetings like this, now called “Stakeholders Forum", will in future be instrumental in defining the further development of the EOSC. On November 23, 2018 the first version of the internet portal European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) was presented at the University of Vienna as part of the Austrian EU Council Presidency. Representatives from politics, science, research funding and the European Commission discussed the concept and meaning of the EOSC and presented its potential with concrete examples. Virtual research environments provide an easy access to e-Infrastructures for researchers by creating an abstracted service-oriented layer on top of the available resources. Using the portal, researchers can focus on the research workflow and data analysis while being provided with a consolidated unified view of all tools necessary for their activities. The sustainable lifecycle of a virtual research environment can only be achieved if it is going to be used with high quality of experience by a large body of users. Aiming for this goal, in this paper we analyse the requirements and implementation of a cross-community virtual research environment that brings together researchers from three different domains. Promoting interdisciplinary research and cooperation, the federated virtual research environment is based on the service orientation paradigm, offering anything as a service solutions. Thus, the main pillar for a successful implementation of this solution is the careful design and management of the underlying elementary services and service compositions. Digital Humanities Infrastructures (DHIs) are research infrastructures supporting researchers in the field of humanities by providing ICT tools and facilities for performing their studies and investigation activities. A DHI typically serves either researchers of one specific sector of humanities (e.g. history, archaeology) or focused research groups working on specific research topics (e.g. studies on the holocaust, on a specific manuscript), with little or no re-use of tools, services and data that could be shared and successfully adopted to answer research questions of different research disciplines. This fragmentation often represents a barrier to inter-disciplinary research collaborations. We present a technical framework for the federation of DHIs where tools, data, services, and knowledge available from each DHI are shared in an integrated environment where researchers can collaborate on specific research topics by creating customized Virtual Research Environments. New Science paradigms have recently evolved to promote open publication of scientific findings as well as multi-disciplinary collaborative approaches to scientific experimentation. These approaches can face modern scientific challenges but must deal with large quantities of data produced by industrial and scientific experiments. These data, so-called Big Data, require to introduce new computer science systems to help scientists cooperate, extract information, and possibly produce new knowledge out of the data. E-infrastructures are distributed computer systems that foster collaboration between users and can embed distributed and parallel processing systems to manage big data. However, in order to meet modern Science requirements, e-Infrastructures impose several requirements to computational systems in turn, eg, being economically sustainable, managing community-provided processes, using standard representations for processes and data, managing big data size and heterogeneous representations, supporting reproducible Science, collaborative experimentation, and cooperative online environments, managing security and privacy for data and services. In this paper, we present a cloud computing system (gCube DataMiner) that meets these requirements and operates in an e-Infrastructure, while sharing characteristics with state-of-the-art cloud computing systems. To this aim, DataMiner uses the web processing service standard of the open geospatial consortium and introduces features like collaborative experimental spaces, automatic installation of processes and services on top of a flexible and sustainable cloud computing architecture. We compare DataMiner with another mature cloud computing system and highlight the benefits our system brings, the new paradigms requirements it satisfies, and the applications that can be developed based on this system. This paper presents dispel4py, a new Python framework for describing abstract stream-based workflows for distributed data-intensive applications. These combine the familiarity of Python programming with the scalability of workflows. Data streaming is used to gain performance, rapid prototyping and applicability to live observations. dispel4py enables scientists to focus on their scientific goals, avoiding distracting details and retaining flexibility over the computing infrastructure they use. The implementation, therefore, has to map dispel4py abstract workflows optimally onto target platforms chosen dynamically. We present four dispel4py mappings: Apache Storm, message-passing interface (MPI), multi-threading and sequential, showing two major benefits: a) smooth transitions from local development on a laptop to scalable execution for production work, and b) scalable enactment on significantly different distributed computing infrastructures. Three application domains are reported and measurements on multiple infrastructures show the optimisations achieved; they have provided demanding real applications and helped us develop effective training. The dispel4py.org is an open-source project to which we invite participation. The effective mapping of dispel4py onto multiple target infrastructures demonstrates exploitation of data-intensive and high-performance computing (HPC) architectures and consistent scalability. The Archaeological Map of the Czech Republic (AMCR) project will soon be finished and one chapter of building digital infrastructures in the Czech Republic will be closed. It is a natural occasion to evaluate national state-of-the-art in dealing with Digital Culture Heritage, particularly archaeological data. It is a also good time to summarise our knowledge about using digital tools and to outline prospects of development for the coming years. What are the key points? The AMCR represents both an administrative system of field archaeology management and a kind of 'sites and monuments records' for the territory of the CR. Its fundamental underlying principles are interoperability, standardisation, data re-use, crowdsourcing and networking. However, a reasonable question should also concern the theoretical background to the process of digitisation of the archaeological world. Infrastructures should every time stay on the level of service for the community of researchers and every digital tool has to fulfil real needs in the fields of both archaeological theory and practice. On the other hand, the application of this virtual research environment is inseparable from archaeological legislation and institutional management.

With the increasingly rapid growth of data in Life Sciences we are witnessing a major transition in the way research is conducted, from hypothesis-driven studies to data-driven simulations of whole systems. In the context of the European Grid Infrastructure Community Forum 2014 (Helsinki, 19–23 May 2014), a workshop was held aimed at understanding the state of the art of Grid/Cloud computing in EU research as viewed from within the field of Life Sciences. The workshop brought together Life Science researchers and infrastructure providers from around Europe and facilitated networking between them within the context of EGI. The first part of the workshop included talks from key infrastructures and projects within the Life Sciences community. This was complemented by technical talks that established the key aspects present in major research approaches. Finally, the discussion phase provided significant insights into the road ahead with proposals for possible collaborations and suggestions for future actions.

A full hydro-meteorological (HM) simulation, from rainfall to impact on urban areas, is a multidisciplinary activity which consists in the execution of a workflow composed by complex and heterogeneous model engines. Moreover an extensive set of configuration parameters have to be selected consistently among the models, otherwise the simulation can fail or produce unreliable results. The DRIHM portal is a Web-based science gateway aiming to support HM researchers in designing, executing and managing HM simulations. The first version of the portal was developed during the DRIHM project using the gUSE science gateway toolkit. The lesson we learned is guiding a refactoring process that, together with a review of the most relevant technologies for the development of a science gateway, represent the focus of this paper. Beside the technological aspects, the need of a strong interplay between ICT and other domain-specific communities clearly emerged, together with coherent policies in the management of data, computational resources and software components that represent the ecosystem of a science gateways. This paper addresses the emerging issue of integrating data sharing and computing e-infrastructures for multidisciplinary applications. In the recent years several solutions have been proposed to implement digital infrastructures for sharing and processing scientific data and observations. Spatial data infrastructures currently enable effective and efficient geo-information data sharing in many disciplinary communities, and innovative solutions are under development to support new open data and linked data paradigms. In parallel, High Performance Computing systems, computing grids and more recently cloud services, enable fast processing of big data. However, the integration of data and computing e-infrastructures is a raising issue in multidisciplinary research. In the context of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) initiative, an innovative approach has been proposed. Taking into account that the heterogeneity of data and computing e-infrastructures and related technologies cannot be reduced beyond a certain extent, since it is due to the need of supporting use cases and scenarios from different scientific communities, a brokering solution has been designed and developed. A Business Process Broker (BPB) is a component which takes a formal description of a scientific business process, and translates it in an executable process which can be run on multiple and remote processing and workflow services. In doing this it solves all the interoperability issues in a (semi-)automated way. It allows lowering the entry barrier for both computing service providers and users, decoupling the specification of the scientific process from the underlying enabling infrastructures. The paper presents and discusses a BPB use-case from the European project IASON, implementing an Earth Observation application involving satellite image mosaicking, HPC computing services and spatial data e-infrastructures. Geothermal data are published using different IT services, formats and content representations, and can refer to both regional and global scale information. Geothermal stakeholders search for information with different aims. E-Infrastructures are collaborative platforms that address this diversity of aims and data representations. In this paper, we present a prototype for a European Geothermal Information Platform that uses INSPIRE recommendations and an e-Infrastructure (D4Science) to collect, aggregate and share data sets from different European data contributors, thus enabling stakeholders to retrieve and process a large amount of data. Our system merges segmented and national realities into one common framework. We demonstrate our approach by describing a platform that collects data from Italian, French, Hungarian, Swiss and Icelandic geothermal data providers. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

A full hydrometeorological (HM) simulation, from rainfall to impact on urban areas, is a multidisciplinary job, which relies on the execution of a workflow composed of complex and heterogeneous model engines. Moreover, the accuracy of the simulation is strongly dependent on an extensive set of configuration parameters, which have to be selected in a consistent way among the models. Within the Distributed Research Infrastructure for Hydro-Meteorology project, a Web-based science gateway was developed with the aim to support HM researchers in designing, executing, and managing HM experiments. The core of this science gateway is the portal, which takes care of generating all the configuration files and handles the execution of simulation steps on a heterogeneous computing infrastructure composed of high-performance computing, Grid resources, and Cloud resources. This paper presents technological insights about the implementation of the portal, with an analysis of the adopted technologies and infrastructures. Our experience highlights the need of coherent policies in the management of data, computational resources, and software components that represent the ecosystem to develop science gateways. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe the design and implementation of policies, digital infrastructures and hands-on support for eResearch at the University of Göttingen. Core elements of this activity are to provide support for research data management to researchers of all disciplines and to coordinate on-campus activities. These activities are actively aligned with disciplinary, national and international policies and e-infrastructures. Design/methodology/approach – The process of setting up and implementing an institutional data policy and its necessary communications and workflows are described and analysed. A first assessment of service development and uptake is provided in the area of embedded research data support. Findings – A coordination unit for eResearch brings together knowledge about methods and tools that are otherwise scattered across disciplinary units. This provides a framework for policy implementation and improves the quality of institutional research environments. Practical implications – The study provides information about an institutional implementation strategy for infrastructure and services related to research data. The lessons learned allow insights into current challenges and work ahead. Originality/value – With a cross-cutting, “horizontal” approach, in the Göttingen eResearch Alliance, two research-orientated infrastructure providers, a library and an IT service, combine their services and expertise to develop an eResearch service and support portfolio for the Göttingen Campus. Modeling & Simulation (M&S) is making successful contributions to different areas in industry and academia. However, there are certain key issues that are preventing the field from addressing larger domains and from achieving wide-scale impact. Formulating these as grand challenges arguably focuses attention on these key issues and may bring a critical mass of effort to bear that could result in a major leap forward. This article is one of several concurrent activities aimed at reinvigorating the debate on grand challenges in M&S. These grand challenges include Big Simulation, human behavior, composability, cloud-based M&S, reproducibility in M&S research and the democratization of M&S. Two themes emerge: the need for large-scale cloud-based cyberinfrastructures for M&S and the democratized access to M&S and its outputs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ICT costs have been traditionally assessed using well-established methods such as full cost accounting or total cost of ownership. Within their specific, optimal application areas they provide very good tools for cost follow-up and strategic decision-making. However, as the scale and complexity of the system being analysed grows, these methods become less suitable. In particular, due to the complex funding structures, and the multi-supplier and cross-country nature of service provision, estimating the total costs of European computing services for research is perhaps one of the best examples of such complex, large-scale systems. Solving this challenge is crucial for the sustainability of these services: besides obvious technical budgeting challenges, difficulties in comparing the cost-effectiveness of different service delivery options make sustaining public support for funding more arduous than it should be. This paper presents a novel cost assessment methodology that addresses the above challenges and uses an in-depth analysis of the pan-European computing e-Infrastructure costs as a case study illustrating the use of the methodology. We also use this case study as an illustration of the kind of cost assessment issues that high-utilisation rate computing services should consider when choosing between different infrastructure options (for example comparing costs per core hour of in-house resources and public Cloud offerings).
