5. A convex programming approach for discrete-time Markov decision processes under the expected total reward criterion

Abstract

In this work, we study discrete-time Markov decision processes (MDPs) under constraints with Borel state and action spaces and where all the performance functions have the same form of the expected total reward (ETR) criterion over the infinite time horizon. One of our objective is to propose a convex programming formulation for this type of MDPs. It will be shown that the values of the constrained control problem and the associated convex program coincide and that if there exists an optimal solution to the convex program then there exists a stationary randomized policy which is optimal for the MDP. It will be also shown that in the framework of constrained control problems, the supremum of the expected total rewards over the set of randomized policies is equal to the supremum of the expected total rewards over the set of stationary randomized policies. We consider standard hypotheses such as the so-called continuity-compactness conditions and a Slater-type condition. Our assumptions are quite weak to deal with cases that have not yet been addressed in the literature. An example is presented to illustrate our results with respect to those of the literature.

Abstract

A search for neutron-antineutron (n-n¯) oscillation was undertaken in Super-Kamiokande using the 1489 live-day or 2.45×1034 neutron-year exposure data. This process violates both baryon and baryon minus lepton numbers by an absolute value of two units and is predicted by a large class of hypothetical models where the seesaw mechanism is incorporated to explain the observed tiny neutrino masses and the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. No evidence for n-n¯ oscillation was found; the lower limit of the lifetime for neutrons bound in O16, in an analysis that included all of the significant sources of experimental uncertainties, was determined to be 1.9×1032years at the 90% confidence level. The corresponding lower limit for the oscillation time of free neutrons was calculated to be 2.7×108s using a theoretical value of the nuclear suppression factor of 0.517×1023s-1 and its uncertainty.

Abstract

The aging of large concrete structures such as Nuclear Containment Buildings (NCB) or bridges involves a continuous strain evolution in time, which may affect their durability, safety and the safety of their environment. Then, the evaluation of structural integrity requires an accurate assessment of the long-term strain level. When considering probabilistic analysis of the delayed mechanical behavior of large concrete structures, the prediction results may present large uncertainties, which do not provide clear indicators aiming at supporting decisions related to structures' maintenance. In this context, Bayesian updating enables to reduce uncertainties, by combining a prior state of knowledge with noisy monitoring data of the structure response. It requires the definition of a prior probability distribution, which summarizes all available information before collecting monitoring data. In former work concerning Bayesian approaches applied to the analysis of delayed strains, the prior distribution is usually defined through expert judgement, which constitutes a quite subjective process which may have a significant influence on Bayesian updating results. Moreover, the previously cited work involved strong hypotheses related to observation noise, which is usually assumed to be perfectly known. The present contribution aims at evaluating the influence of prior distributions defined by expert judgement on Bayesian updating results, through an illustrative case study of a well instrumented 1:3 scale NCB. The present work proposes also a Bayesian framework suitable for cases where the observation noise of data is unknown. The influence of the amount of monitoring data on the uncertainty reduction provided by Bayesian updating is also studied. Results underline that the modeling choices of the analyst are of paramount importance in the framework of long-term strains predictions, regardless the quantity of available data. Furthermore, results also suggest that Bayesian updating is well suitable for providing significant uncertainty reduction, even in the case of structures which dispose of a limited amount of monitoring data. Abstract

At a recent symposium on aging biology, a debate was held as to whether or not we know what biological aging is. Most of the participants were struck not only by the lack of consensus on this core question, but also on many basic tenets of the field. Accordingly, we undertook a systematic survey of our 71 participants on key questions that were raised during the debate and symposium, eliciting 37 responses. The results confirmed the impression from the symposium: there is marked disagreement on the most fundamental questions in the field, and little consensus on anything other than the heterogeneous nature of aging processes. Areas of major disagreement included what participants viewed as the essence of aging, when it begins, whether aging is programmed or not, whether we currently have a good understanding of aging mechanisms, whether aging is or will be quantifiable, whether aging will be treatable, and whether many non-aging species exist. These disagreements lay bare the urgent need for a more unified and cross-disciplinary paradigm in the biology of aging that will clarify both areas of agreement and disagreement, allowing research to proceed more efficiently. We suggest directions to encourage the emergence of such a paradigm.
