The article investigate the effects of the treatment of dairy cows with analgesics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug meloxicam at calving on the risk of retained fetal membranes. It finds that the administration of meloxicam to dairy cattle immediately after calving shows no differences in retained fetal membranes and the incidence of periparturient diseases. It also informs that meloxicam can be used on the day of calving in lactating cows without risk of retained fetal membranes.

The objective of this study was to better understand current management practices for down cows in Ontario, Canada, and to identify factors associated with the adoption of acceptable practices. An online survey was distributed to all dairy producers in Ontario, Canada (n = 3,367) and was available from November 2020 to March 2021, inclusive. Dairy producers were identified through their provincial dairy organization and contacted via email, and the survey was also promoted via social media. The survey was comprised of 134 questions, 31 of which were related to down cow management. Descriptive statistics were evaluated, and 2 logistic regression models were generated using Stata 17, exploring factors associated with 1) relocating down cows with hip lifters and 2) assisting cows to stand within an hour after discovering a down cow. A total of 226 producers responded (7.4%). Participants were predominantly male (68%), farm owners (78%), and 30-39 years old (29%). Producers reported relocating down cows with a boat or sled (32.6%), front-end loader bucket (31.4%), hip lifters (28.0%), or 'other' (with a text box to further describe) (8.0%). The median time to relocating a down cow after identifying her was 1 h (range 0 - 17h). Farms that relocated a down cow sooner after identifying her as down, were more likely to use appropriate methods to move the cow. However, we also found that farms that provided feed and water sooner to down cows, were more likely to use an inappropriate method (hip lifters) to move her. Farms that used hip lifters to move cows had higher odds of assisting a cow to stand within an hour following the discovery of recumbency. Additionally, producers who waited longer to relocate a down cow were less likely to assist the cow to stand within one hour of finding them down. Research has identified effective management practices for down cows, yet there remains a gap in understanding the implementation and the decision-making process of producers. Data from this study will be helpful in designing future research that further explores the barriers and motivations of producers when implementing evidence-based management plans to care for down dairy cows and may help inform current industry extension efforts., (© 2024, The Authors. Objective: The objective of this prospective observational research project was to have dairy producers use and assess the utility of a cull cow evaluation form., Animals: Cull dairy cows., Procedure: Veterinarians were recruited to enrol a purposively selected group of dairy producers into a project to evaluate a cull cow evaluation form. Producers were provided with evaluation forms and asked to complete a form for every cow they culled from their herd from January to June 2017, inclusive., Results: A total of 44 producers used the form to record information on 323 cows prior to transport., Conclusion and Clinical Relevance: Despite the completion of 323 forms, only ~1/3 were completed fully, with compliance highest for body condition score, lameness, and temperature recordings (> 90% of forms). Our objective was to validate a point-of-care handheld blood total calcium analyzer (Ca meter, CM; TD-5220 Vet Ca 2+ , TaiDoc, New Taipei, Taiwan) to estimate circulating Ca concentrations in postpartum dairy cows. Whole blood was collected from 251 multiparous cows between 1 and 4 d in milk from 2 commercial dairy herds in Ontario, Canada. Blood total calcium concentration (tCa) was analyzed in whole blood, fresh plasma, and thawed plasma, and compared with tCa results from thawed serum analyzed in a diagnostic laboratory (using a Cobas Calcium Gen 2 kit, Roche Diagnostics, Indianapolis, IN) as the reference test (RT). Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (βrho;) and Bland-Altman (B-A) plots were assessed to evaluate the agreement between the RT and CM results in each type of sample. Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses were used to describe the accuracy of each test against the categorized RT results (at a cut-point of ≤2.14 mmol/L). Samples where the meter gave a nonquantitative result ("high" or "low"; thawed plasma: 3/247; fresh plasma: 6/100; and whole blood: 20/98) were not included in the βrho; and B-A analyses. Lin's correlation coefficients demonstrated poor agreement between tests (thawed plasma: βrho; = 0.16; fresh plasma: βrho; = 0.21; and whole blood: βrho; = 0.23). Fresh plasma (using a cut-point of 2.55 mmol/L as measured on the CM) had the greatest diagnostic sensitivity (72%), specificity (86%), and accuracy (77%) for determining subclinical hypocalcemia, but that would still misclassify 23% of samples. In addition to substantial variability, the B-A plots revealed bias with changing concentrations of calcium. Because of low sensitivity on whole blood (58%) or thawed plasma (56%), measurement with the CM is not recommended on these types of samples. This rapid and low-cost meter was not sufficiently accurate to quantify blood Ca concentration, but when used with fresh plasma it might be useful as a screening tool for subclinical hypocalcemia., (© 2020.)

Disbudding and dehorning are common procedures on dairy farms. In a recent survey of Ontario dairy producers, 38% reported not using local anesthetic for these procedures. Use of pain control is important for both calf welfare and industry sustainability. Use of local anesthetic requires technical training, typically provided by a veterinarian, although online training videos also exist. Neither method has been studied for efficacy. Our objective was to compare an online module to hands-on training in teaching naïve participants (veterinary students) to effectively carry out a cornual nerve block and disbud a dairy calf. Participants were assigned to either an online or hands-on training group. Although no statistical differences were seen in success of the nerve block, online learners were less confident and had poorer technical skills. While online learning was surprisingly effective for a psycho-motor skill, best practices should include hands-on training.
