Since 2016, the tour de CLARIN initiative has been periodically highlighting prominent user involvement activities in the CLARIN network in order to increase the visibility of its members, reveal the richness of the CLARIN landscape, and display the full range of activities that show what CLARIN has to offer to researchers, teachers, students, professionals and the general public interested in using and processing language data in various forms. In 2019, we expanded the initiative to also feature the work of CLARIN Knowledge Centres, which offer knowledge and expertise in specific areas provide to researchers, educators and developers alike. Initially conceived as a series of blog posts published on the CLARIN website, Tour de CLARIN soon proved to be one of our flagship outreach initiatives, which has been released in the form of two printed volumes. this third volume of tour de CLARIN is organized into two parts. In Part 1, we present the six countries which have been featured since January 2020: Norway, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, South Africa, and Iceland. Each national consortium is presented with five chapters: an introduction to the consortium, their members and their work; a description of one of their key resources; the presentation of an outstanding tool; an account of a successful event for the researchers and students in their network; and an interview with a renowned researcher from the Digital Humanities or Social Sciences who has successfully used the consortium’s infrastructure in their work. In Part 2, we present the work of the six Knowledge Centres that have been visited since the publication of the second volume in November 2019: the Impact-CKC K-Centre, the Knowledge Centre for Polish Language technology, the Phonogrammarchiv Knowledge Centre, the Knowledge Centre for Atypical Communication Expertise, the LUND University Humanities Lab Knowledge Centre, and the Spanish Knowledge Centre. Each Knowledge Centre is presented with two chapters: a presentation of what the K-Centre offers to researchers, and an interview with a renowned researcher who has collaborated with the K-Centre.

There is much talk about the need for multidisciplinary approaches to research and the opportunities that have been created by digital technologies. A good example of this is the CLARIN Portal, that promotes and supports such research by offering a large suite of tools for working with textual and audio-visual data. Yet scholars who work with interview material are largely unaware of this resource and are still predominantly oriented towards familiar traditional research methods. To reach out to these scholars and assess the potential for integration of these new technologies a multidisciplinary international community of experts set out to test CLARIN-type approaches and tools on different scholars by eliciting and documenting their feedback. This was done through a series of workshops held from 2016 to 2019, and funded by CLARIN and affiliated EU funding. This paper presents the goals, the tools that were tested and the evaluation of how they were experienced. It concludes by setting out envisioned pathways for a better use of the CLARIN family of approaches and tools in the area of qualitative and oral history data analysis.

As increasingly sophisticated new technologies for working with numbers, text, sound and images come on stream, there is one type of data that begs to be explored by the wide array of available digital humanities tools, and that is interview data. (De Jong, 2014), (Corti and Fielding, 2016). A stream of concerted activities by the authors of this workshop based on their engagement with interview data from different perspectives, led to a series of 4 workshops from 2016 to 2018, held in Oxford, Utrecht, Arezzo and München, that were funded by CLARIN (Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure). This workshop intended to present the motivation for this DH2019-workshop by sketching the complex design and results of these series of multidisciplinary workshops. The premise was that the multimodal character (text, sound and facial expression) and multidisciplinary potential of interview data (history, oral and written language, audio-visual communication) is rarely fully exploited, as most scholars focus on the analysis of the textual representation of the interviews. This might change by getting acquainted with scholarly approaches and conventions from other disciplines.

In Munich, from 19 to 21 September 2018, a group of speech technologists, social scientists, linguists, computer scientists, oral historians and information scientistsconvened to explore the integration of digital tools in the workflow of scholars who work with interviews.
