For the Phase-II Upgrade of the ATLAS Detector [1], its Inner Detector, consisting of silicon pixel, silicon strip and transition radiation sub-detectors, will be replaced with an all new 100% silicon tracker, composed of a pixel tracker at inner radii and a strip tracker at outer radii. The future ATLAS strip tracker will include 11,000 silicon sensor modules in the central region (barrel) and 7,000 modules in the forward region (end-caps), which are foreseen to be constructed over a period of 3.5 years. The construction of each module consists of a series of assembly and quality control steps, which were engineered to be identical for all production sites. In order to develop the tooling and procedures for assembly and testing of these modules, two series of major prototyping programs were conducted: An early program using readout chips designed using a 250 nm fabrication process (ABCN-250) [2,2] and a subsequent program using a follow-up chip set made using 130 nm processing (ABC130 and HCC130 chips). This second generation of readout chips was used for an extensive prototyping program that produced around 100 barrel-type modules and contributed significantly to the development of the final module layout. This paper gives an overview of the components used in ABC130 barrel modules, their assembly procedure and findings resulting from their tests.

Contamination of drinking water by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) emitted from manufacturing plants, fire-fighting foams, and urban waste streams has received considerable attention due to concerns over toxicity and environmental persistence; however, PFASs in ambient air remain poorly understood, especially in the United States (US). We measured PFAS concentrations in ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) at 5 locations across North Carolina over a 1 year period in 2019. Thirty-four PFASs, including perfluoroalkyl carboxylic, perfluoroalkane sulfonic, perfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic and sulfonic acids were analyzed by UHPLC/ESI-MS/MS. Quarterly averaged concentrations ranged from <0.004–14.1 pg m−3. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) ranged from <0.18 to 14.1 pg m−3, comparable to previous PM2.5 measurements from Canada and Europe (<0.02–3.5 pg m−3). Concentrations above 1 pg m−3 were observed in July–September at Charlotte (14.1 pg m−3, PFOA), Wilmington (4.75 pg m−3, PFOS), and Research Triangle Park (1.37 pg m−3, PFOS). Notably, PM2.5 has a short atmospheric lifetime (<2 weeks), and thus, the presence of PFOS in these samples raises questions about their sources, since PFOS production was phased out in the US ∼20 years ago. In 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) eliminated "oligoastrocytoma" from the classification of central nervous system (CNS) tumors, in favor of an integrated histologic and molecular diagnosis. Consistent with the 2016 classification, in the 2021 classification, oligodendrogliomas are defined by mutations in isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) with concurrent 1p19q codeletion, while astrocytomas are IDH mutant tumors, usually with ATRX loss. In 2007, a 24-year-old man presented with a brain tumor histologically described as astrocytoma, but with molecular studies consistent with an oligodendroglioma, IDH mutant and 1p19q-codeleted. Years later, at resection, pathology revealed an astrocytoma, with variable ATRX expression and mutations of IDH, ATRX, TP53, and TERT by DNA sequencing. Fluorescence in situ hybridization studies confirmed 1p19q codeletion in sections of the tumor shown to histologically retain ATRX expression. Separately, in 2017, a 36-year-old woman presented with a frontal brain tumor with pathology consistent with an oligodendroglioma, IDH mutant and 1p19q-codeleted. Two years later, pathology revealed an astrocytoma, IDH1 mutant, with ATRX loss. These two cases likely represent the rare occurrence of dual-genotype IDH mutant infiltrating glioma. Nine cases of dual-genotype IDH mutant glioma were previously reported in the literature. We present two cases in which this distinct molecular phenotype is present in a tumor in the same location with surgeries at two points in time, both with 1p19q codeletion and ATRX loss at the time of resection. Whether this represents a true "collision tumor" or genetic switching over time is not known, but the co-occurrence of these hybrid mutations supports a diagnosis of dual-genotype IDH mutant glioma., (© 2024 The Authors. The risk posed by prolonged exposure to space radiation represents a significant obstacle to long-duration human space exploration. Of the ion species present in the galactic cosmic ray spectrum, relativistic protons are the most abundant and as such are a relevant point of interest with regard to the radiation protection of space crews involved in future long-term missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. This work compared the shielding effectiveness of a number of standard and composite materials relevant to the design and development of future spacecraft or planetary surface habitats. Absorbed dose was measured using Al 2 O 3 :C optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters behind shielding targets of varying composition and depth using the 1 GeV nominal energy proton beam available at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York. Absorbed dose scored from computer simulations performed using the multi-purpose Monte Carlo radiation transport code FLUKA agrees well with measurements obtained via the shielding experiments. All shielding materials tested and modeled in this study were unable to reduce absorbed dose below that measured by the (unshielded) front detector, even after depths as large as 30 g/cm 2 . Background: The presence of intracranial collision tumors, histologically distinct tumors occurring in anatomical proximity, is quite rare. Herein, the authors describe the sentinel case of a contiguous collision tumor combination consisting of glioblastoma multiforme and intraventricular subependymoma., Observations: A 67-year-old male presented with several months of progressive fatigue superimposed on more recently noted word-finding difficulty, slight left-sided weakness, and episodic confusion. He was found to have a large right frontal mass abutting the right lateral ventricle with an additional nodular focus of enhancement within the right frontal horn. The patient underwent an awake right frontal craniotomy for gross-total resection of the tumor, noted to be of two distinct histological identities., Lessons: Although exceptionally rare, primary glial neoplasms of various histologies can be encountered simultaneously during resection, as in this case of co-occurring glioblastoma of the right frontal lobe and right frontal horn intraventricular subependymoma. Close attention to tumoral locations and the gross appearance of specimens during resection can prime the operative neurosurgeon for success in contributing to accurate diagnoses through sending separate pathological specimens for histological analysis when qualitatively different tissue is suspected.

In 2017, people living in New Hanover County, North Carolina, learned that for ∼40 years they were unknowingly exposed to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) through drinking water sourced by the Cape Fear River. Using data from the GenX Exposure Study, which measured serum PFAS levels in county residents, we aimed to understand questionnaire-measured factors associated with serum PFAS levels. Because most residents were served by the same municipal water source, we focused on surrogate factors of drinking water exposure that may contribute to variability in PFAS levels. Our analysis included 335 participants aged 6 and older. We included seven chemicals detected in ≥75% of the study population: four well-studied perfluoroalkyl acids (PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS) and three understudied fluoroethers (Nafion byproduct 2, PFO4DA, PFO5DoA). For each PFAS, we evaluated associations of variables with serum PFAS levels adjusting for key demographic characteristics. Additionally, we developed predictive models for each PFAS. We used years of residence in the lower Cape Fear Region as a surrogate for water consumption. Duration of drinking water exposure was associated with higher serum levels of all seven PFAS. Drinking municipal water treated by home filters or other sources of water (non-city) were associated with lower PFAS concentrations for all seven PFAS compared to drinking municipal water without additional filtration. Males had higher levels of well-studied PFAS, but there was no difference for fluoroethers. For six PFAS, the predictive models explained ≥30% of the variance in serum PFAS levels. While some factors were significantly associated with levels of individual PFAS, their relative importance to overall prediction was low, such as microwave popcorn consumption. Consistently, water consumption-related variables were important for both the association and predictive investigations. Objective: We report the development and validation of a combined DNA/RNA next-generation sequencing (NGS) platform to improve the evaluation of pancreatic cysts., Background and Aims: Despite a multidisciplinary approach, pancreatic cyst classification, such as a cystic precursor neoplasm, and the detection of high-grade dysplasia and early adenocarcinoma (advanced neoplasia) can be challenging. NGS of preoperative pancreatic cyst fluid improves the clinical evaluation of pancreatic cysts, but the recent identification of novel genomic alterations necessitates the creation of a comprehensive panel and the development of a genomic classifier to integrate the complex molecular results., Methods: An updated and unique 74-gene DNA/RNA-targeted NGS panel (PancreaSeq Genomic Classifier) was created to evaluate 5 classes of genomic alterations to include gene mutations (e.g., KRAS, GNAS, etc.), gene fusions and gene expression. Further, CEA mRNA ( CEACAM5 ) was integrated into the assay using RT-qPCR. Separate multi-institutional cohorts for training (n=108) and validation (n=77) were tested, and diagnostic performance was compared to clinical, imaging, cytopathologic, and guideline data., Results: Upon creation of a genomic classifier system, PancreaSeq GC yielded a 95% sensitivity and 100% specificity for a cystic precursor neoplasm, and the sensitivity and specificity for advanced neoplasia were 82% and 100%, respectively. Associated symptoms, cyst size, duct dilatation, a mural nodule, increasing cyst size, and malignant cytopathology had lower sensitivities (41-59%) and lower specificities (56-96%) for advanced neoplasia. This test also increased the sensitivity of current pancreatic cyst guidelines (IAP/Fukuoka and AGA) by >10% and maintained their inherent specificity., Conclusions: PancreaSeq GC was not only accurate in predicting pancreatic cyst type and advanced neoplasia but also improved the sensitivity of current pancreatic cyst guidelines., Competing Interests: A.D.S. has received an honorarium from Foundation Medicine Inc. Individuals with maxillary dentofacial deformities commonly have preexisting nasal airway obstruction with associated nasal septal deviation. Combination bimaxillary procedures with intraoral septoplasty after maxillary downfracture have been demonstrated to address dentofacial deformities and nasal obstruction simultaneously. Although effective, current transoral septoplasty techniques offer limited visualization of the superior septum and are challenging to perform due to septal mobility after Le Fort I downfracture. Here, we describe a novel approach in which a transoral septoplasty is performed before completion of the Le Fort I maxillary downfracture, improving septal stability during the dissection and affording better visualization of the septal L-strut for precise cartilage resection., Competing Interests: The authors have no financial interest to declare in relation to the content of this article., (Copyright © 2023 The Authors. The microgravity exposure that astronauts undergo during space missions lasting up to 6 months induces biochemical and physiological changes potentially impacting on their health. As a countermeasure, astronauts perform an in-flight training program consisting in different resistive exercises. To train optimally and safely, astronauts need guidance by on-ground specialists via a real-time audio/video system that, however, is subject to a communication delay that increases in proportion to the distance between sender and receiver. The aim of this work was to develop and validate a wearable IMU-based biofeedback system to monitor astronauts in-flight training displaying real-time feedback on exercises execution. Such a system has potential spin-offs also on personalized home/remote training for fitness and rehabilitation. 29 subjects were recruited according to their physical shape and performance criteria to collect kinematics data under ethical committee approval. Tests were conducted to (i) compare the signals acquired with our system to those obtained with the current state-of-the-art inertial sensors and (ii) to assess the exercises classification performance. The magnitude square coherence between the signals collected with the two different systems shows good agreement between the data. Multiple classification algorithms were tested and the best accuracy was obtained using a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP). MLP was also able to identify mixed errors during the exercise execution, a scenario that is quite common during training. The resulting system represents a novel low-cost training monitor tool that has space application, but also potential use on Earth for individuals working-out at home or remotely thanks to its ease of use and portability., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright: © 2023 Ravizza et al.
