Purpose: The objective of this systematic review is to compare results concerning the properties of adhesion, roughness, and hardness of dental liners obtained in the last ten years., Methods: Searches on the databases LILACS, PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were supplemented with manual searches conducted between February and April of 2018. The inclusion criteria included experimental in vitro and in vivo , clinical, and laboratory studies on resilient and/or hard liners, assessment of hardness, roughness, and/or adhesion to the denture base, and physical/mechanical changes resulting from the disinfection process and changes in liners' composition or application., Results: A total of 406 articles were identified and, from those, 44 are discussed. Twenty-four studies examined the bond strength, 13 surface roughness, and 19 the hardness. Of these 44 studies, 12 evaluated more than one property. Different substances were used in the attempt to improve adhesion. Considering roughness and hardness, the benefits of sealants have been tested, and the changes resulting from antimicrobial agents' incorporation have been assessed., Conclusion: Adhesion to the prosthesis base is improved with surface treatments. Rough surfaces and changes in hardness compromise the material's serviceability.

This paper discusses aspects of quality and safety improvement of the most commonly used dental restorative materials, the resin-based composites. From a patient's perspective, long-lasting resin-based restorations without complications are important. Recurrent caries and fracture are the most common causes for restoration failures. Proper handling and curing of the composites improve the mechanical properties of the restorations and increase safety by reducing exposure to residual methacrylate monomers. A number of compounds have been introduced in restorative materials to reduce the risk of recurrent caries, even though a real breakthrough has not yet been achieved. Background Teeth restored with direct composite resin are constantly exposed to specific challenges of the oral cavity. These challenges can modify the material properties and, when associated with daily brushing, eventually change its surface roughness, allowing bacterial growth and retention of extrinsic pigments. Dentifrices plays an important role in dental wear (abrasion) and over time, can also cause an increase in the surface roughness of restorative materials. Objective To assess the effect of dentifrices on the longevity of direct nanofilled composite resins restorations as far as wear and roughness is concerned. Method Class V cavity were prepared on 90 extracted human teeth and restored with Filtek Z350 composite. Teeth were randomly divided into 6 experimental groups of 15 each labelled as Group-1 (Colgate Dental cream) Group-2 (Colgate Active Salt toothpaste), Group-3 (Pepsodent Regular toothpaste), Group-4 (Dabur red toothpaste), Group-5 (Dabur Lal tooth powder) and Group-6 Control (water). The samples were fixed on tooth brushing machine and subjected to mechanical tooth brushing using various dentifrices according to respective groups in 3 phases and reading of surface roughness (Ra) was recorded. Result Surface roughness (Ra) had increased in following order: Group 6 < Group 3 < Group 2 < Group 1 < Group 4 < Group 5. All the tooth pastes were compared, their behaviour was found to be similar as there was no statistically significant difference amongst them. Though all of them were inferior to control group and the difference was statistically significant. Whereas the only tooth powder Dabur lal tooth powder gave the maximum roughness when compared with the other tooth pastes and the difference was statistically significant. Conclusion With increase in time of brushing there was increase in surface roughness in all the 5 dentifrices among them Ra was maximum for Dabur lal tooth powder.

The longevity of direct adhesive restoration is related to the restorative materials, the patient and the professional. On one hand, dental composites/adhesives have been modified and developed to fulfill the criteria for clinical application. On the other hand, the clinical guidelines for adhesive restorations have been released and updated accordingly, which would prolong the longevity of restorations. In this commentary, the removal of carious tissues, interface preparation for bonding and application of adhesives are emphasized. The administrative measures for registration and clinical evaluation criteria for adhesive restorative material are also introduced.

Purpose: Screw-retained zirconia implant crowns with an internal titanium base have favorable mechanical properties compared with single-piece zirconia implant crowns; however, the screw-retained implant crowns require adequate bonding between the zirconia crown and the titanium base. This study measured the retention between a titanium base and a full-contour zirconia implant crown following different surface treatments of their bonded surfaces., Materials and Methods: Full-contour screw-retained zirconia implant crowns were fabricated to fit a titanium base. The crowns were bonded to the titanium bases following one of four treatment protocols (n = 15 per protocol group): no surface treatment (Control), 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) primer on the intaglio of crown and exterior of base (MDP), alumina airborne-particle abrasion of the intaglio of crown and exterior of base (Alu), and alumina airborne-particle abrasion and an MDP primer on the intaglio of crown and exterior of base (Alu+MDP). All crowns were bonded to the base with resin cement. Specimens were stored in water for 24 hours at 37°C and then thermocycled in water, with a temperature range of 5°C to 55°C, for 15,000 cycles with a 15-second dwell time. Crowns were separated from the titanium bases using a universal testing machine. The four treatment protocols were compared using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey post hoc tests (P < .05). Sectioned specimens were examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM)., Results: Retention forces for Control (737.8 ± 148.9 N) and MDP (804.1 ± 114.5 N) were significantly greater than Alu+MDP (595.5 ± 122.2 N), which was significantly greater than Alu (428.2 ± 93.8 N). Visual inspection of the debonded specimens showed that the majority of the cement remnants were seen on the external surface of the titanium bases. Microscopic examination of the interface between the crown and the unaltered base shows that the cement gap is approximately 13 μm at the crest of the microgrooves and 50 μm within the channel of the microgrooves. After airborne-particle abrasion, the microgrooves became significantly dulled, and the cement gap increased to 27 to 40 μm at the crest and 55 to 58 μm in the channels., Conclusion: Airborne-particle abrasion of titanium bases that contain retentive microgrooves prior to bonding is contraindicated. Application of an MDP primer demonstrated limited improvement in the retention of the zirconia implant crowns.

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of staining solutions and surface finishing on the colour stability and translucency of hybrid ceramic (HC) and resin nanoceramic (RNC) materials., Methods: Twenty four groups consisting of 10 specimens (240 specimens in total) were created out of HC and RNC, including six groups to be stored in distilled water served as the controls groups. The Vita Enamic technical set, Shofu polishers, medium and fine rubber wheels and Sof-Lex polishing discs were used as polishing instruments. Cola, tea, and coffee were used as staining solutions. The colour differences (∆E*) and translucency parameter (TP) were evaluated by a spectrophotometer. Data were analysed by a One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Mann-Whitney U test., Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the ∆E* values of the HC specimens in the coffee groups and the ∆E* values of the other HC groups (p < 0.05). The ∆E* values of the RNC specimens in the coffee and tea groups were not different from the specimens in the cola groups (p > 0.05). The TP values of the polished groups were higher than the Sof-Lex groups and the Shofu groups on both HC and RNC materials (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: Increased ∆E* values were observed in HC specimens stored in a coffee solution compared to the specimens stored in a tea or cola solution. Both of the RNC specimens stored in coffee and tea had higher ∆E* values than the RNC specimens stored in the cola. The TP values of both HC and RNC specimens stored in the coffee solution decreased.

Despite several advantages of digitalized workflow, researchers have noted discrepancies in the precision and trueness. This study investigated the accuracy in the final thickness of Zirconia (Zr) cores fabricated by five CAD/CAM systems. Standardized manufacturing of the cores with 1 mm thickness were carried out. Cores were then sectioned into two halves and measurement made with Digital Microscope at 5 points in micrometers. Overall, mean thickness for the groups was 1048.81 ± 94.01, which was 48 μm higher than the thickness programmed in the software. Anova showed a statistically significant difference between the groups (p= 0.000). Presence of variations in the thickness and 5 measurement points for the CAD/CAM systems investigated was found. No significant difference was observed and the thickness of the cores were within acceptable level.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the water sorption and solubility test design of ISO 4049 for resin cements. Sorption and solubility of six dual-curing resin cements [RelyX Unicem 2 Automix (RUN), Multilink Speed CEM (MLS), Panavia SA Plus (PSA), RelyX Ultimate (RUL), Multilink Automix (MLA), and Panavia V5 (PV5)] were analyzed by storage in distilled water after dual-curing. In addition, sorption and solubility during thermal cycling were assessed with self-cured and dual-cured specimens. After water storage, all cements revealed sorption in the range of 30 μg mm -3 except for PV5, for which sorption was markedly lower (mean ± SD = 20.8 ± 0.4 μg mm -3 ). Solubility values were negative for RUN and RUL (-2.1 ± 0.08 μg mm -3 and -1.9 ± 0.13 μg mm -3 , respectively). All other cements attained positive values in the range of 0.4-0.8 μg mm -3 . Thermal cycling effects were more pronounced. The assessment of water sorption according to ISO 4049 provides reliable results. Background: This article presents evidence-based clinical recommendations for the use of pit-and-fissure sealants on the occlusal surfaces of primary and permanent molars in children and adolescents. A guideline panel convened by the American Dental Association (ADA) Council on Scientific Affairs and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry conducted a systematic review and formulated recommendations to address clinical questions in relation to the efficacy, retention, and potential side effects of sealants to prevent dental caries; their efficacy compared with fluoride varnishes; and a head-to-head comparison of the different types of sealant material used to prevent caries on pits-and-fissures of occlusal surfaces., Types of Studies Reviewed: This is an update of the ADA 2008 recommendations on the use of pit-and-fissure sealants on the occlusal surfaces of primary and permanent molars. The authors conducted a systematic search in MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and other sources to identify randomized controlled trials reporting on the effect of sealants (available on the U.S. market) when applied to the occlusal surfaces of primary and permanent molars. The authors used the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach to assess the quality of the evidence and to move from the evidence to the decisions., Results: The guideline panel formulated 3 main recommendations. They concluded that sealants are effective in preventing and arresting pit-and-fissure occlusal carious lesions of primary and permanent molars in children and adolescents compared with the nonuse of sealants or use of fluoride varnishes. They also concluded that sealants could minimize the progression of non-cavitated occlusal carious lesions (also referred to as initial lesions) that receive a sealant. Finally, based on the available limited evidence, the panel was unable to provide specific recommendations on the relative merits of 1 type of sealant material over the others. Conclusions and practical implications: These recommendations are designed to inform practitioners during the clinical decision-making process in relation to the prevention of occlusal carious lesions in children and adolescents. Clinicians are encouraged to discuss the information in this guideline with patients or the parents of patients. The authors recommend that clinicians re-orient their efforts toward increasing the use of sealants on the occlusal surfaces of primary and permanent molars in children and adolescents.

Objective: The aim of this systematic review was to compare cumulative failure rates of different restorative materials in carious class V lesions on the root surfaces of adult patients., Background: The prevalence of root caries is set to increase in the coming years as a result of ageing of the population and a concomitant reduction in levels of edentulousness. Evidence is needed to assist practitioners to select the most appropriate restorative material for use in these lesions., Methods: A search of the literature was undertaken using the electronic databases of PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL and OpenSIGLE using keywords relevant to the search question. Two review authors conducted the electronic search independently, and any conflict was resolved by discussion. The references quoted in the full text articles extracted were hand searched for any further eligible studies., Results: Sixty non-duplicate citations were screened. Following review of the titles, abstracts, texts and application of the pre-determined inclusion/exclusion criteria, five studies remained., Conclusion: There is a need for more research in this area as many of the studies identified in this systematic review treated post-radiation, xerostomic patients which are not typical of the general population. Increased adherence to CONSORT guidelines for reporting is also advised to facilitate future systematic review and meta-analysis in this area., (© 2014 John Wiley & Sons A/S and The Gerodontology Association. Aim: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical performance of three different restorative materials in primary teeth according to the FDI criteria., Materials and Methods: Resin-modified glass ionomer cement, compomer and composite resin restorations (n=93) were made in 31 patients. The restorations were clinically evaluated at baseline, 6th, 12th and 18th month with the FDI criteria., Results: The cumulative survival rate after 18 months was found to be 90.3% for resin modified glass ionomer cement restorations, 100% for compomer restorations and 80.6% for composite resin restorations. Statistically significant increase in surface roughness, colour mismatch, anatomic form loss and marginal deterioration were detected in resin- modified glass ionomer group (p<0.05). The most frequent reason for restoration failure in composite resin group was restoration fractures., Conclusions: The resin-modified glass ionomer restorations necessitates close follow-up because of the risk of increase in surface roughness, changes in colour and loss in anatomic form and marginal adaptation. The clinical performance of compomer restorations is superior to resin-modified glass ionomer and composite resin restorations in primary teeth.

Background: Children consume foods that are colorful which contain food additives that stain not only the tooth structure but also the restorations. As esthetics is of prime concern for both parents and children nowadays, long-term color stability of restorative materials is of utmost importance., Aim: To evaluate the color stability of two tooth-colored restorative materials (conventional glass ionomer cement [GIC] and giomer) when immersed in various consumable drinks and food (aerated beverage, ice candy, and health drink) at different immersion periods (low, moderate, and high)., Materials and Methods: A total of 100 specimens were made with each restorative material. Ten were used as a control and remaining (n = 90) as experimental. The experimental specimens were divided into three groups based on media of immersion (n = 30 each) and were further divided into three subgroups based on immersion time (n = 10 each). The color changes (ΔE values) were measured using spectrophotometer., Results: Both the tested materials showed color change; however, conventional GIC showed greater ΔE values when compared to giomer and the samples exposed to aerated beverage resulted in highest color change. It is also noticed that greater the exposure time, higher are the ΔE values., Conclusion: Giomer showed more resistance to color change than conventional GIC with all the tested media and immersion regimes.

Applications of proteomics tools revolutionized various biomedical disciplines such as genetics, molecular biology, medicine, and dentistry. The aim of this review is to highlight the major milestones in proteomics in dentistry during the last fifteen years. Human oral cavity contains hard and soft tissues and various biofluids including saliva and crevicular fluid. Proteomics has brought revolution in dentistry by helping in the early diagnosis of various diseases identified by the detection of numerous biomarkers present in the oral fluids. This paper covers the role of proteomics tools for the analysis of oral tissues. In addition, dental materials proteomics and their future directions are discussed.

Industry sponsorship was found to potentially introduce bias into clinical trials. We assessed the effects of industry sponsorship on the design, comparator choice, and findings of randomized controlled trials on dental restorative materials. A systematic review was performed via MEDLINE, CENTRAL, and EMBASE. Randomized trials on dental restorative and adhesive materials published 2005 to 2015 were included. The design of sponsored and nonsponsored trials was compared statistically (risk of bias, treatment indication, setting, transferability, sample size). Comparator choice and network geometry of sponsored and nonsponsored trials were assessed via network analysis. Material performance rankings in different trial types were estimated via Bayesian network meta-analysis. Overall, 114 studies were included (15,321 restorations in 5,232 patients). We found 21 and 41 (18% and 36%) trials being clearly or possibly industry sponsored, respectively. Trial design of sponsored and nonsponsored trials did not significantly differ for most assessed items. Sponsored trials evaluated restorations of load-bearing cavities significantly more often than nonsponsored trials, had longer follow-up periods, and showed significantly increased risk of detection bias. Regardless of sponsorship status, comparisons were mainly performed within material classes. The proportion of trials comparing against gold standard restorative or adhesive materials did not differ between trial types. If ranked for performance according to the need to re-treat (best: least re-treatments), most material combinations were ranked similarly in sponsored and nonsponsored trials. Purpose: To assess the prevalence of apical periodontitis (AP), as determined by orthopantomograms (OPGs), and its correlation with the quality of root fillings and coronal restorations., Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated a random sample of 193 patients--112 (58%) females and 81 (42%) males--who presented as new patients at the Division of Endodontics. Digital OPGs were independently examined by two reliability-calibrated endodontists. The total number of teeth present, the location of the root canalfilled teeth, and the presence or absence of AP were recorded for each radiograph. The results were statistically analysed using the chi-square test followed by model building using multiple logistic regression., Results: A total of 324 endodontically treated teeth from the 193 selected radiographs were analysed. The mean number of teeth per patient was 25.5 ± 4.6, with an average of 1.64 root canal treatments per subject. Radiographically detected AP was associated with 190 (58.6%) root canal-treated teeth. The logistic model shows that the quality of endodontic treatment (adjusted odds ratio [ORa] = 1.82; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.40-3.17), status of coronal restoration (ORa = 1.77; 95% CI: 1.20-2.61) and the type of material used for coronal restorations (ORa = 1.39; 95% CI: 1.03-1.87) were significantly related to the periapical health of the teeth., Conclusions: The quality of endodontic treatment, status of coronal restoration and the type of coronal restorative material were found to be the most important factors influencing the health of periradicular tissue.

Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the presence of a correlation between flexural strength and simulated crown strength; a correlation between crown strength and mode of fracture; an effect of aging on the flexural strength; and an effect of aging on the crown strength., Methods: Two hundred forty zirconia specimens were fabricated with 2 different designs, fully contoured crown shape specimens (n = 120) and rectangular coupons (n = 120), to provide 10 specimens each of 6 brands of zirconia (Lava Plus High Translucency [3M ESPE], Argen HT [Argen Corp], Zirlux [Ardent], BruxZir [Glidewell Laboratories], ZenoStar [Wieland Dental], and DDBioZX(2) [Dental Direkt]). One-half of each sample type was given a severe, simulated low-temperature aging treatment. The coupons were tested by 3-point flexural strength, and crowns were tested after luting to metallic abutments using resin cement. Statistical significance was evaluated by 2-factor analysis of variance (P = .05)., Results: Aging increased the mean (standard deviation [SD]) flexural strength for the following groups: Argen HT (995 [140] megapascals versus 677 [121] MPa before aging), Zirlux (939 [101] MPa versus 826 [169] MPa before aging), and ZenoStar (954 [81] MPa versus 764 [77] MPa before aging). There were statistical differences for the mean (SD) crown strengths for the following aged crowns: DDBioZX(2) had higher magnitudes (9,755 [1,095] MPa) than ZenoStar (8,864 [976] MPa), whereas Lava Plus High Translucency crowns had higher magnitudes (9,871 [942] MPa) than ZenoStar (8,864 [976] MPa). There was no effect of aging on the crown strength. There were statistical differences in the mode of fracture for the zirconia crowns between the following groups: nonaged and aged BruxZir (P = .014), nonaged and aged ZenoStar (P = .0226), and nonaged and aged Lava Plus High Translucency (P < .0001). There was no correlation between flexural strength and crown strength., Conclusions: There was no direct correlation between ranking of flexural strength and crown strength in the range of properties exhibited by these dental zirconias., Practical Implications: Flexural strength does not predict simulated clinical strengths for crowns., (Copyright © 2015 American Dental Association. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate if the cytotoxic effects of the Surefil SDR flow, bulk fill flowable composite resin and three conventional flowable materials (Venus Diamond Flow, Filtex Supreme XTE Flowable and Enamel plus HRi Flow) correlated with the conversion degree (DC); hardness and depth of cure are also assessed., Materials and Methods: Disks of each materials--cured using LED lamp--are utilized to evaluate DC (by FT-IR technique), amount of leached monomers (by HPLC technique), hardness (by Vickers hardness tester) and cytotoxicity (by MTT test)., Results: All tested materials show light cytotoxic effects, independently from DC values. Both the latter parameter and the hardness, in fact, change in function of thickness and type of material. HPLC results show that the monomers amount leached from each specimen is influenced by thickness but it is always very low which justifies the absence of any cytotoxic effect., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that there are not statistically significant differences in cytotoxicity in all experimental conditions, notwithstanding the differences in hardness and in degree of conversion.

Aim: To assess the quality of proximal coronary restorations and bring out the factors influencing this quality., Material and Method: A transversal study on 160 radiographs of proximal coronary restorations was conducted at the University Center of Dental Consultation and Treatment of Rabat. Restorations were evaluated according to the modified USPHS criteria. Four variables were studied: restoration material, treated tooth, cavity type and location of treatment in order to identify the influencing factors., Results: Forty five per cent of the evaluated proximal coronary restorations required replacement. The main cause of failure was recurrent caries in 36% of cases, followed by the absence of the contact point (24.4%), unacceptable proximal coronary outline (13.8%), and finally dentin exposure (6.9%). Thus, it turned out that there is a difficulty to restore correctly posterior proximal cavities especially using amalgam and a high rate of recurrent caries at both the anterior and posterior teeth., Conclusion: Both a clinical and a radiographic evaluation after each proximal restoration would be recommended to reduce failure.

Dental education consists of both theoretical and practical learning for students to develop competence in treating patients clinically. When dental students encounter practical courses in their first year as a new educational experience, they must also learn to evaluate themselves. Self-evaluation is an essential skill to learn for dental professionals to keep increasing their competence over the course of their careers. The aim of this study was to compare the assessment scores of second- and third-year dental students and the faculty in two consecutive preclinical practical exams in restorative dentistry courses in a dental school in Turkey. Faculty- and student-assigned scores were calculated from two consecutive preclinical examinations on tooth restorations performed on both artificial casts and phantom patients. The students were formally instructed on grading procedures for tooth preparations, base and restoration placement, and polishing criteria. After each step, each item was assessed by faculty members, the student, and another student. The results indicated that the initial differences between second-year students' assessments of their own preclinical practical ability and that of the faculty decreased among the third-year students. Self-evaluation scores did not indicate whether the third-year students tended to over- or underestimate the quality of their own work. However, the second-year students not only overestimated themselves but thought they were above average. The results point to the need to develop students' self-insight with more exercises and practical training.

State dental associations are showing increased interest in maintaining current standards and regulations affecting the dental laboratory industry as mandated by the Food and Drug Administration. The domestic dental laboratory industry is being significantly stressed by foreign competition, rapid technology development and unprecedented consolidation, which are changing the way that prosthetic devices and restorations are manufactured and delivered to dentists. Of paramount importance to the prescribing dentist is the accurate documentation of the source and materials being used in prostheses being delivered to patients.

Aim: To study the outcomes for restored primary molar teeth; to examine outcomes in relation to tooth type involved, intracoronal restoration complexity and to the material used., Design: Retrospective study of primary molar teeth restored by intracoronal restorations. A series of restored primary molar teeth for children aged 6-12 years was studied. The principal outcome measure was failure of initial restoration (re-restoration or extraction). Three hundred patient records were studied to include three equal groups of primary molar teeth restored with amalgam, composite or glass ionomer, respectively. Restorative materials, the restoration type, simple (single surface) or complex (multi-surface) restoration, and tooth notation were recorded. Subsequent interventions were examined. Data were coded and entered into a Microsoft Excel database and analysis undertaken using SPSS v.18. Statistical differences were tested using the Chi square test of statistical significance., Results: Of the 300 teeth studied, 61 restoration failures were recorded with 11 of those extracted. No significant differences were found between outcomes for upper first, upper second, lower first or lower second primary molars. Outcomes for simple primary teeth restored by intracoronal restorations were significantly better than those for complex intracoronal restorations (P = 0.042). Teeth originally restored with amalgam accounted for 19.7% of the 61 failures, composite for 29.5%, while teeth restored with glass ionomer represented 50.8% of all restoration failures. The differences were significant (P = 0.012)., Conclusions: The majority (79.7%) of the 300 restored primary teeth studied were successful, and 3.7% teeth were extracted. Restorations involving more than one surface had almost twice the failure rate of single surface restorations. The difference was significant. Significant differences in failure rates for the three dental materials studied were recorded. Amalgam had the lowest failure rate while the failure rate with glass ionomer was the highest.
