Abstract

The Nuclotron-base Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), with commissioning of the facility expected in late 2022. The Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) has been designed to operate at NICA and its components are currently in production. The detector is expected to be ready for data taking with the first beams from NICA. This document provides an overview of the landscape of the investigation of the QCD phase diagram in the region of maximum baryonic density, where NICA and MPD will be able to provide significant and unique input. It also provides a detailed description of the MPD set-up, including its various subsystems as well as its support and computing infrastructures. Abstract

The studies of bottom sediments of the Yenisei River from 2006 to 2016 near the Mining and Chemical Combine (MCC) and at a distance of up to 250 km from it downriver revealed an increased content of the radionuclide 60Co (including radioactive microparticles) in the upper layers. The specific activity of 60Co in the river floodplain increased due to the extreme flood of 2006. The 137Cs/60Co ratio in the surface layers of bottom sediments after the flood varied from 0.2 to 1.0 and differed significantly from the 137Cs/60Co ratio (2.5–6.0) in the surface layers before the flood. The increased content of 60Co in the upper layers of bottom sediments can serve as a marker of the 2006 event for calculating the sedimentation rate and dating the input of radionuclides into bottom sediments. Abstract

A measurement of the transverse mu (+) polarization, P-T, in K+ --> pi (0)mu (+)nu decay was performed using stopped kaons. For 1996-1997 data the results are P-T = -0.0042 +/- 0.0049(stat) +/- 0.0009(syst) and Im(xi) = -0.013 +/- 0.016(stat)+/- 0.003(syst), where Im(xi) is T-violating physics parameter.

Abstract

An experiment E246 at the 12-GeV proton synchrotron at KEK (KEK-PS), which is searching for the T-violating transverse muon polarization (P-mu(perpendicular to)) in K+ --> pi (0)mu (+)nu decay, is described. The search is sensitive to new mechanisms of T or CP violation beyond the Standard Model. The initial results of P-mu(perpendicular to) = -0.0042+/-0.0049(stat.)+/-0.0009(syst.) and the T-violating parameter Im(xi) = -0.013+/- 0.016(stat.) +/- 0.003(syst.) were determined from the data taken in 1996 and 1997.

Abstract

Age-dependent accumulation of Cs in the muscles and bodies of the pike Esox lucius (aged two to seven years) inhabiting a section of the Yenisei River polluted with artificial radionuclides has been studied. The content of Cs in muscles varied from 0.5 to 7.0 Bq/kg of fresh weight. The maximum content of the radionuclide has been found in juveniles. The content of Cs in pike muscles and body decreased considerably with age. The high content of Cs in the muscles of juveniles is probably a consequence of their higher intensity of feeding as compared to older individuals, which is due to the intense growth of juveniles. Abstract

Experiments with macromycetes Pleurotus ostreatus, Neonothopanus nambi, and Agaricus bisporus demonstrated for the first time that live mycelium of mushrooms, cultivated on a liquid culture medium, can efficiently take up dissolved Am in its biomass. Biochemical fractionation of the mycelium biomass demonstrated for the first time that the major fraction (up to 90%) of Am accumulated in the mycelium is bonded to structural polysaccharides of the cell walls. The sorption capacity of cell wall polysaccharides for Am is 2.7-3.6 times higher than that of the initial mycelium biomass, and the activity concentration of Am in the polysaccharides reached 950 Bq g dry weight. Abstract

Responses of cytogenetic and growth endpoints of the aquatic plant Elodea canadensis were studied using the plants collected from non-contaminated control areas of the Yenisei River and exposed to external γ-radiation for 11-13 days in the laboratory. Elodea canadensis was exposed to 0.5-25 mGy/day γ-radiation dose rates from a 137 Cs source. The total number of aberrant cells and total root length were more sensitive elodea endpoints to γ-radiation than total shoot length and mitotic index of elodea. Radiation sensitivity of elodea can be compared with the sensitivity of such a Reference Plant as Wild Grass (1-10 mGy/day) recommended by the ICRP. Abstract

Long-term trends of artificial radionuclides, from 2003 to 2018, in two abundant species of macrophytes, shining pondweed, Potamogeton lucens, and water moss, Fontinalis antipyretica, have been analyzed to estimate the indicative reliability of these two species as biomonitors of radioactive contamination in a river system and to quantify the decrease in the content of artificial radionuclides in the Yenisei River. Time-dependent trends of artificial radionuclides in the biomass of these species were similar, resulting in estimates of effective half-lives for 54 Mn, 58 Co, 60 Co, 65 Zn, 137 Cs, and 152 Eu similar for both species. Concentrations of artificial radionuclides in biomass of shining pondweed and water moss correlated with annual discharges of the radionuclides to the Yenisei at different levels of significance, and the strongest (R 2  > 0.7) positive correlation (p < 0.05) was obtained for 60 Co, 65 Zn, and 152 Eu. Concentrations of 60 Co, 137 Cs, and 152 Eu in water moss were 2-7.5 times higher than in shining pondweed, and considerable percentages of those isotopes were recorded in extracellular particulate matter, which was largely represented by epiphytic diatoms. Higher concentrations of artificial radionuclides in the biomass of water moss can be considered as an advantage of water moss as a monitor of radioactive contamination of the Yenisei, while shining pondweed is more useful for estimation of annual deposits of radionuclides in vegetation of the Yenisei and spatial transfer of radionuclides downstream of the discharge site. Despite differences in concentrations of artificial radionuclides, both species can be considered as reliable indicators of radioactive contamination of the river on a long-term scale., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the long-term effects of gamma-radiation, including low-dose radiation, on growth parameters of onion ( Allium cepa ) seedling roots 6-10 days after irradiation., Materials and Methods: Onion seedlings were exposed to a 137 Cs gamma source at doses ranging from 0.1 to 10 grays (Gy). Responses of root and shoot length growth were studied 6 and 10 days after irradiation., Results: Our results showed inhibition of the root and shoot length growth 6 days after exposure at all doses, including the low dose - 0.1 Gy. At a later point in time (day 10), root and shoot inhibition was only observed after irradiation at high doses (above 5 Gy), and that suggested the occurrence of cell repair after irradiation at low doses. The results indicated that the length of seedling roots was more sensitive to gamma-irradiation than the shoot length., Conclusion: The results of the study suggested that short-term gamma-irradiation of onion seedlings (absorbed doses of 0.1-10 Gy) caused inhibition of plant growth 6 and 10 days after irradiation. The dose dependence of the onion root length was linear. The present study showed for the first time that short-term low-dose gamma-irradiation could induce long-term negative effects on plant growth.

Abstract

137 Cs concentrations were measured in mushrooms in an area affected by radioactive discharges of the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC) (Rosatom, Russia) in 2002-2017. The sources of radionuclides in the study sites were global fallouts and waterborne and airborne radioactive discharges of the MCC. The mushroom species Suillus granulatus and S. luteus showed the highest 137 Cs concentrations (140-7100 Bq kg -1 ) for this area. Over the entire monitoring period, no significant change in 137 Cs concentration was observed in the Suillus spp. samples collected from the sites with the aerial deposition of radionuclides. In the floodplain site with the radionuclide deposition from water and air, a significant decrease in the average 137 Cs concentration was observed in the period between 2004 and 2017: a three-fold decrease in Suillus spp. and a nine-fold decrease in Lactarius deliciosus . The effective half-lives of 137 Cs in fruiting bodies of the mushrooms L. deliciosus and Suillus spp. in this site were 3.6 ± 0.6 and 9.2 ± 2.7 years, respectively.

Abstract

The Yenisei River is contaminated by artificial radionuclides released by one of the Russian facilities producing weapons-grade plutonium (the Mining-and-Chemical Combine, MCC), which has been in operation for 60 years. The paper presents results of long-term monitoring of radionuclide concentrations in six aquatic plant species collected from the 1400 km Yenisei River stretch downstream of the city of Krasnoyarsk. Before the last MCC reactor was shut down (in 2010), up to 30 artificial radionuclides were detected in the plant biomass, and 2 and 5 years after the reactor shutdown, 11 and 3-5 radionuclides, respectively, were detected. The highest concentrations of radionuclides were recorded in Fontinalis antipyretica. The aquatic plant Elodea canadensis, which commonly occurs in the Yenisei River, was used in the cytogenetic study. High frequencies of chromosomal aberrations (up to 33%) were revealed in cells of Elodea canadensis roots from the Yenisei region affected by the MCC radioactive discharge, at dose rates of 45-72 μGy/d, while in the cells of the plant roots from the reference areas, the frequency of chromosomal aberrations was 5-7%, at dose rates below 2 μGy/d. The higher frequencies of chromosomal aberrations in Elodea canadensis collected from the parts of the River with increased concentrations of artificial radionuclides are associated with the radiation factor. 39. Gamma irradiation of resting eggs of Moina macrocopa affects individual and population performance of hatchlings.

Abstract

We investigated the effects of γ-radiation on the survival of resting eggs of the cladoceran Moina macrocopa, on the parameters of the life cycle of neonates hatched from the irradiated eggs and on the performance of the population initiated from irradiated eggs. The study showed that γ-radiation in a range of doses from the background level to 100 Gy had no effect on survival of irradiated eggs. The absorbed dose of 200 Gy was lethal to resting eggs of M. macrocopa. The number of clutches and net reproductive rate (R 0 ) of hatchlings from eggs exposed to radiation were the strongly affected parameters in experiments with individual females. The number of clutches per female was drastically reduced for females hatched from egg exposed to 80-100 Gy. The most sensitive parameter was the R 0 . The estimated ED 50 for the R 0 (effective dose that induces 50% R 0 reduction) was 50 Gy. Population performance was also affected by the irradiation of the resting stage of animals that initiated population. Populations that was initiated from hatchlings from resting eggs exposed to 100 Gy was of smaller size and with fewer juvenile and parthenogenetic females in comparison with control populations. Thus, we determined the dose-response relationship for the effect of gamma radiation on survival of resting eggs and individual and population responses of hatchlings from irradiated resting eggs. We conclude that for highly polluted areas contamination of bottom sediments with radioactive materials could affect zooplankton communities through adverse chronic effects on resting eggs, which will be transmitted to hatchlings at individual or population levels., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract

The study addresses biological effects of low-dose gamma-radiation. Radioactive 137 Cs-containing particles were used as model sources of gamma-radiation. Luminous marine bacterium Photobacterium phosphoreum was used as a bioassay with the bioluminescent intensity as the physiological parameter tested. To investigate the sensitivity of the bacteria to the low-dose gamma-radiation exposure (≤250 mGy), the irradiation conditions were varied as follows: bioluminescence intensity was measured at 5, 10, and 20°С for 175, 100, and 47 h, respectively, at different dose rates (up to 4100 μGy/h). There was no noticeable effect of gamma-radiation at 5 and 10°С, while the 20°С exposure revealed authentic bioluminescence inhibition. The 20°С results of gamma-radiation exposure were compared to those for low-dose alpha- and beta-radiation exposures studied previously under comparable experimental conditions. In contrast to ionizing radiation of alpha and beta types, gamma-emission did not initiate bacterial bioluminescence activation (adaptive response). As with alpha- and beta-radiation, gamma-emission did not demonstrate monotonic dose-effect dependencies; the bioluminescence inhibition efficiency was found to be related to the exposure time, while no dose rate dependence was found. The sequence analysis of 16S ribosomal RNA gene did not reveal a mutagenic effect of low-dose gamma radiation. Abstract

This study addresses use of two bacterial test systems (the Ames test and the SOS chromotest) to estimate the effects of low doses of γ-radiation. The most substantial increases in induction of SOS response and mutation frequencies were observed in the first 24h of exposure to γ-radiation as compared to the cells in the exposure-free control. Gamma-radiation also impaired growth and survival of S. typhimurium cells in the first 24h. The effects were attenuated at lower exposure doses and at longer exposure times. In the experiments conducted in this study, at 96h of exposure, the values of some of the γ-radiation effects were lower than the MID (minimum inducing dose) detection limits and, thus, were neglected. Abstract

Submersed freshwater macrophytes are considered as relevant indicators for use in bulk bottom sediment contact tests. The purpose of this study was to estimate the validity of endpoints of aquatic plant Elodea canadensis for laboratory genotoxicity testing of natural bottom sediments. The inherent level of chromosome abnormalities (on artificial sediments) in roots of E. canadensis under laboratory conditions was lower than the percentage of abnormal cells in bulk sediments from the Yenisei River. The percentage of abnormal cells in roots of E. canadensis was more sensitive to the presence of genotoxic agents in laboratory contact tests than in the natural population of the plant. The spectra of chromosomal abnormalities that occur in roots of E. canadensis under natural conditions in the Yenisei River and in laboratory contact tests on the bulk bottom sediments from the Yenisei River were similar. Hence, chromosome abnormalities in roots of E. canadensis can be used as a relevant and sensitive genotoxicity endpoint in bottom sediment-contact tests., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Inc.
