Abstract

Nonlinear photoluminescence (N-PL) is a broadband photon emission arising from non-equilibrium electron distribution generated at the surface of metallic nanostructures by an ultrafast pulsed laser illumination. N-PL is sensitive to surface morphology, local electromagnetic field strength, and electronic band structure making it relevant to probe optically excited nanoscale plasmonic systems. It also has been key to access the complex multiscale time dynamics ruling electron thermalization. Here, we show that the surface plasmons mediated N-PL emitted by a gold nanowire can be modified by an electrical architecture featuring a nanogap. Upon voltage activation, we observe that N-PL becomes dependent to the electrical transport dynamics and can thus be locally modulated. This finding brings an electrical leverage to externally control the photoluminescence generated from metal nanostructures, and constitutes an asset for the development of emerging nanoscale interface devices managing photons and electrons.

Abstract

In a bridge configuration, a single graphene nanoribbon (GNR) is positioned with a picometer precision over a trench in between two monoatomic steps on an Au(111) surface. This GNR molecular wire adopts a deformed conformation towards the down terrace in between the two contact step edges. Using differential conductance dI/dV mapping from a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope, it is demonstrated how the electronic delocalization along GNR is cut at each contact by its down curvature. It points out the need to bring conductive nanocontacts backside of the support for preserving the front side GNR planar conformation.

Abstract

On-chip optoelectronic and all-optical information processing paradigms require compact implementation of signal transfer for which nanoscale surface plasmons circuitry offers relevant solutions. This work demonstrates the directional signal transmittance mediated by 2D plasmonic eigenmodes supported by crystalline cavities. Channel devices comprising two mesoscopic triangular input and output ports and sustaining delocalized, higher-order plasmon resonances in the visible to infra-red range are shown to enable the controllable transmittance between two confined entry and exit ports coupled over a distance exceeding 2 $\mu$m. The transmittance is attenuated by > 20dB upon rotating the incident linear polarization, thus offering a convenient switching mechanism. The optimal transmittance for a given operating wavelength depends on the geometrical design of the device that sets the spatial and spectral characteristic of the supporting delocalized mode. Our approach is highly versatile and opens the way to more complex information processing using pure plasmonic or hybrid nanophotonic architectures.

Abstract

In contrast to the high performances of long-range, high-speed optical information transfer, optical information processing remains outperformed by electronic microprocessing. The two mains reasons are the lack of gain medium that hampers the development of an optical analogue of the transistor and the lack of compactness of the approaches proposed so far. Here, we demonstrate a new concept of the design of all-optical elementary computing units based on the shaping of plasmonic modal landscape in micrometric on-chip 2D cavities to realize reconfigurable Arithmetic and Logic Units (ALU). Our interconnect-free devices perform multi-bit logic gate functions in a single cavity without ALU cascading, therefore obviating loss in vias and so the need for gain to restore the binary signal. Moreover, an astute cavity design allows to reconfigure a single cavity into multiple logic functions, including a first full adder. The main challenge on the way to increasing the functional Boolean complexity is the design of the cavity shape and of the excitation/detection parameters for which an approach based on artificial intelligence will be implemented.

Abstract

ITO is a transparent conductive material commonly used in everyday life and for its potential in material research. In nonlinear optics for instance, ITO has shown great capabilities for harmonic generation in its epsilon-near-zero configuration. In this article, we demonstrate a completely new nonlinear behaviour from ITO thin layers. After a Ga-Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling of the thin film, we observe nonlinear photoluminescence produced for tightly focused femtosecond pulses. The signal shares strong similarities with that commonly detected from noble metals. We show that the arising of this nonlinear photoluminescence originates from the radiative decay of metal-like hot electron distribution in the material and is associated to a modification of the optical properties by the Ga ions.

Abstract

The recent advancement in bandgap engineering through controlled doping has widen the prospectof vacancy ordered double halide perovskites (VO DHPs) by conferring them with designableoptoelectronic properties. Here, we report synthesis of Gd doped Cs2SnCl6 via a simplesolvothermal method. Gd3+ ions doping lowers the band gap from 3.8 eV to 2.8 eV and facilitatesstable room temperature dual PL emission centered at 440 nm and 610 nm. The macroscopicemission process is well supported by the confocal PL emission studies on isolated crystallites.Both the pristine (Cs2SnCl6) and Gd:Cs2SnCl6 exhibit crystalline cubic structure with Fm3m spacegroup. Rietveld refinement correlates well with the cubic phase and the analysis of (220) XRDpeak validates the existence of a secondary crystalline phase. SEM studies confirm the anisotropicgrowth, forming large micron sized octahedral structures of pristine (> 20 μm) and Gd:Cs2SnCl6(< 5 μm). This study enhances the experimental understanding of hitherto unknown dual PLemission properties of Gd:Cs2SnCl6 having implication in quantum photonics leaving a scope fordetail theoretical study on the origin of the electronic transitions.

Abstract

By performing controlled step-by-step annealing experiments of bilayers of GNR monomer reactants with multiple UHV-STM analysis of intermediate stages, we show that the coupling reaction takes place mainly in the uppermost layer of the monomer bilayer despite being separated from the Au(111) surface by the lowermost compact monomer carpet. This demonstrates that the initial monomer bilayer configuration plays acrucial role in lengthening the final GNR length once the intermediate dehalogenated polymer is cyclodehydrogenated. In this respect our experimental results directly provide the counter rationalization to the generalization of the metallic substrate catalytic role in the surface assisted coupling chemical reactions.

Abstract

Processing information with conventional integrated circuits remains beset by the interconnect bottleneck: circuits made of smaller active devices need longer and narrower interconnects, which have become the prime source of power dissipation and clock rate saturation. Optical interchip communication provides a fast and energy-saving option that still misses a generic on-chip optical information processing by interconnect-free and reconfigurable Boolean arithmetic logic units (ALU). Considering metal plasmons as a platform with dual optical and electronic compatibilities, we forge interconnect-free, ultracompact plasmonic Boolean logic gates and reconfigure them, at will, into computing ALU without any redesign nor cascaded circuitry. We tailor the plasmon mode landscape of a single 2.6 μm2planar gold cavity and demonstrate the operation and facile reconfiguration of all 2-input logic gates. The potential for higher complexity of the same logic unit is shown by a multi-input excitation and a phase control to realize an arithmetic 2-bit adder.

Abstract

cited By 0; International audience; Surface plasmon modes propagating in metal nanowires are conveniently excited by focusing a laser beam on one extremity of the nanowire. We find that the precise positioning of the nanowire inside the focal region drastically influences the excitation efficiency of the different SPP modes sustained by the plasmonic waveguide. We demonstrate a spatially selective excitation of bound and leaky surface plasmon modes with excitation maps that strongly depend on the orientation of the incident linear polarization. We discuss this modal selection by considering the inhomogeneous distribution of the field components inside the focus. Our finding provides a way to discriminate the effective indices of the modes offering thus an increased coupling agility for future nanowire-based plasmonic architectures.
