Despite quantum electrodynamics (QED) being one of the most stringently tested theories underpinning modern physics, recent precision atomic spectroscopy measurements have uncovered several small discrepancies between experiment and theory. One particularly powerful experimental observable that tests QED independently of traditional energy level measurements is the `tune-out' frequency, where the dynamic polarizability vanishes and the atom does not interact with applied laser light. In this work, we measure the `tune-out' frequency for the $2^{3\!}S_1$ state of helium between transitions to the $2^{3\!}P$ and $3^{3\!}P$ manifolds and compare it to new theoretical QED calculations. The experimentally determined value of $725\,736\,700\,$$(40_{\mathrm{stat}},260_{\mathrm{syst}})$ MHz is within ${\sim} 1.7\sigma$ of theory ($725\,736\,252(9)$ MHz), and importantly resolves both the QED contributions (${\sim} 30 \sigma$) and novel retardation (${\sim} 2 \sigma$) corrections., Comment: Main text 6 pages, 4 figures, SI 21 pages 11 figures. Analysis of contact stresses in tapered roller bearings (TRBs) is an important subject in mechanical systems that involve moving and rotating parts. This is because the damage resulting from contact stresses between races and rolling elements may lead to failure and long hours of down time. To make an accurate estimation of TRB performance, it is necessary to understand the stresses experienced at the contact surfaces. In this study stresses generated by combined radial and axial loads in TRB are investigated using photoelastic experimental hybrid method. A comparison between stress behaviour of TRBs and angular contact ball bearings (ACBBs) is then made. The critical areas of stress concentrations were identified. It was found that the stresses σx and σy on races of a TRB were much lower than those on ACBB. Analysis of shear stresses showed that τxy on the TRB were more than two times those on ACBB. This difference in magnitude was explained on the basis of the orientation of rolling elements. The study also showed that under combined axial and radial loading conditions, the critical areas of stress concentrations for TRB were mainly regions where the race thickness was smallest.

Bell correlations are a foundational demonstration of how quantum entanglement contradicts the classical notion of local realism. Rigorous validation of quantum nonlocality have only been achieved between solid-state electron spins, internal states of trapped atoms, and photon polarisations, all weakly coupling to gravity. Bell tests with freely propagating massive particles, which could provide insights into the link between gravity and quantum mechanics, have proven to be much more challenging to realise. Here we use a collision between two Bose-Einstein condensates to generate spin entangled pairs of ultracold helium atoms, and measure their spin correlations along uniformly rotated bases. We show that correlations in the pairs agree with the theoretical prediction of a Bell triplet state, and observe a quantum mechanical witness of Bell correlations with \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$6\sigma$$\end{document}6σ significance. Extensions to this scheme could find promising applications in quantum metrology, as well as for investigating the interplay between quantum mechanics and gravity., Entangled particles some distance apart can be used to show the strikingly nonlocal nature of quantum mechanics. We present observations of the high momentum tail in expanding Bose-Einstein condensates of metastable Helium atoms released from a harmonic trap. The far-field density profile exhibits features that support identification of the tails of the momentum distribution as originating in the in-situ quantum depletion prior to release. Thus, we corroborate recent observations of slowly-decaying tails in the far-field beyond the thermal component. This observation is in conflict with the hydrodynamic theory, which predicts that the in-situ depletion does not survive when atoms are released from a trap. Indeed, the depleted tails even appear stronger in the far-field than expected before release, and we discuss the challenges of interpreting this in terms of the Tan contact in the trapped gas. In complement to these observations, full quantum simulations of the experiment show that, under the right conditions, the depletion can persist into the far field after expansion. Moreover, the simulations provide mechanisms for survival and for the the large-momentum tails to appear stronger after expansion due to an acceleration of the depleted atoms by the mean-field potential. These methods could possibly be applied to other atoms, providing new tools in the search for ultraweak transitions and precision metrology.

Although stress analysis of the bearing contact problem has been a subject of significant interest, it is rare to find experimental studies on the topic. The problem is attributed to the difficulty in designing an experimental system, which can apply radial and axial loads and permit direct measurement of the bearing contact stresses. A novel experimental configuration is presented which simultaneously applies radial and axial ball bearing loads on a bearing housing into which an assembled photoelastic model of the bearing is mounted. The technique is demonstrated and validated by measuring contact stresses of angular contact ball bearings using the “frozen stress” photoelastic experimental hybrid method (PEHM). Experimental results reveal that ball deformations are mainly concentrated at the contact points. Ball 0, positioned at the base of the bearing housing, experienced the highest magnitude of stresses located near the geometric center of the contact region. Stresses are observed to progressively decrease with increased distance from ball 0 along the circular bearing groove toward balls 4 L and 4R (near the three and nine o-clock positions) where the lowest stress magnitudes were observed. It was also shown that the most highly loaded balls were located in the lower semi-circular section. PEHM measurements are found to be in very good agreement with finite element analysis.

Ultracold collisions of Bose-Einstein condensates can be used to generate a large number of counterpropagating pairs of entangled atoms, which collectively form a thin spherical shell in momentum space, called a scattering halo. Here we generate a scattering halo composed almost entirely of pairs in a symmetric entangled state and observe a scattering angle-dependent mixing to the anti-symmetric state due to the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field. We report on a proof-of-principle application of the observed parity dynamics to demonstrate magnetic gradiometry, insensitive to common-mode fluctuations of the background magnetic field. The control and manipulation of quantum systems without excitation is challenging, due to the complexities in fully modeling such systems accurately and the difficulties in controlling these inherently fragile systems experimentally. For example, while protocols to decompress Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) faster than the adiabatic timescale (without excitation or loss) have been well developed theoretically, experimental implementations of these protocols have yet to reach speeds faster than the adiabatic timescale. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate an alternative approach based on a machine learning algorithm which makes progress towards this goal. The algorithm is given control of the coupled decompression and transport of a metastable helium condensate, with its performance determined after each experimental iteration by measuring the excitations of the resultant BEC. After each iteration the algorithm adjusts its internal model of the system to create an improved control output for the next iteration. Given sufficient control over the decompression, the algorithm converges to a novel solution that sets the current speed record in relation to the adiabatic timescale, beating out other experimental realizations based on theoretical approaches. This method presents a feasible approach for implementing fast state preparations or transformations in other quantum systems, without requiring a solution to a theoretical model of the system. We develop a simple yet powerful technique to study Bogoliubov-Cherenkov radiation by producing a pulsed atom laser from a strongly confined Bose-Einstein condensate. Such radiation results when the atom laser pulse falls past a Bose-Einstein condensate at high-hypersonic speeds, modifying the spatial profile to display a characteristic twin jet structure and a complicated interference pattern. The experimental observations are in excellent agreement with mean-field numerical simulations and an analytic theory. Ghost imaging with correlated photon pairs has been applied to remote sensing without the spatially detected photons interacting with the object: here we demonstrate for the first time ghost imaging using correlated atom pairs.

We have developed and characterised a stable, narrow linewidth external-cavity laser (ECL) tunable over 100 nm around 1080 nm, using a single-angled-facet gain chip. We propose the ECL as a low-cost, high-performance alternative to fibre and diode lasers in this wavelength range and demonstrate its capability through the spectroscopy of metastable helium. Within the coarse tuning range, the wavelength can be continuously tuned over 30 pm (7.8 GHz) without mode-hopping and modulated with bandwidths up to 3 kHz (piezo) and 37(3) kHz (current). The spectral linewidth of the free-running ECL was measured to be 22(2) kHz (Gaussian) and 4.2(3) kHz (Lorentzian) over 22.5 ms, while a long-term frequency stability better than 40(20) kHz over 11 hours was observed when locked to an atomic reference.

Ghost imaging is a counter-intuitive phenomenon-first realized in quantum optics-that enables the image of a two-dimensional object (mask) to be reconstructed using the spatio-temporal properties of a beam of particles with which it never interacts. Typically, two beams of correlated photons are used: one passes through the mask to a single-pixel (bucket) detector while the spatial profile of the other is measured by a high-resolution (multi-pixel) detector. The second beam never interacts with the mask. Neither detector can reconstruct the mask independently, but temporal cross-correlation between the two beams can be used to recover a 'ghost' image. Here we report the realization of ghost imaging using massive particles instead of photons. In our experiment, the two beams are formed by correlated pairs of ultracold, metastable helium atoms, which originate from s-wave scattering of two colliding Bose-Einstein condensates. We use higher-order Kapitza-Dirac scattering to generate a large number of correlated atom pairs, enabling the creation of a clear ghost image with submillimetre resolution. Future extensions of our technique could lead to the realization of ghost interference, and enable tests of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entanglement and Bell's inequalities with atoms.
