Introduction. The clinical course of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is highly heterogenous, ranging from asymptomatic to fatal forms. The identification of clinical and laboratory predictors of poor prognosis may assist clinicians in monitoring strategies and therapeutic decisions. Materials and Methods. In this study, we retrospectively assessed the prognostic value of a simple tool, the complete blood count, on a cohort of 664 patients ( F 260; 39%, median age 70 (56-81) years) hospitalized for COVID-19 in Northern Italy. We collected demographic data along with complete blood cell count; moreover, the outcome of the hospital in-stay was recorded. Results. At data cut-off, 221/664 patients (33.3%) had died and 453/664 (66.7%) had been discharged. Red cell distribution width (RDW) ( χ 2 10.4; p < 0.001 ), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte (NL) ratio ( χ 2 7.6; p = 0.006 ), and platelet count ( χ 2 5.39; p = 0.02 ), along with age ( χ 2 87.6; p < 0.001 ) and gender ( χ 2 17.3; p < 0.001 ), accurately predicted in-hospital mortality. Hemoglobin levels were not associated with mortality. We also identified the best cut-off for mortality prediction: a NL ratio > 4.68 was characterized by an odds ratio for in-hospital mortality OR = 3.40 (2.40-4.82), while the OR for a RDW > 13.7 % was 4.09 (2.87-5.83); a platelet count > 166,000 /μL was, conversely, protective (OR: 0.45 (0.32-0.63)). Conclusion. Our findings arise the opportunity of stratifying COVID-19 severity according to simple lab parameters, which may drive clinical decisions about monitoring and treatment.

The growing demand of nanomaterials is pushing towards the development of alternative strategies for the safe and sustainable production of nanoparticles. At the same time, to ensure high performances, a fine control over the product specifications is required. We focused on a bottom-up method combined with a mechanical disaggregation technique using a wet bead-stirring process, since it provides numerous advantages over other approaches, including the minimization of the nanoparticles air dispersion and a greater control over the final product. However, given the broad variability of the parameters involved in both the setup and operation of the process, it is essential to combine the experiments with a theoretical-simulative study to optimize the design. The present activity consists in the preliminary simulation of the interactions among the grinding beads, modelled through the discrete element method (DEM), and the magnetic stirrer. This approach, providing information regarding the frequency and energy of collisions, which can be related to the properties of the produced nanoparticles, allows a fine tuning of the process parameters.

The presence of a hydrogen bond (H-Bond) network has been proved to impact significantly the efficiency of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices by promoting molecular orientation and structural anisotropy in thin films. The design of specific compounds to control H-Bond network formation in an amorphous material, and hence to improve OLED performances, is needed. A successful example is given by the bi-pyridyl-based family n-type of organic semiconductors named BPyMPM. The experimental evidences demonstrate a surprisingly higher electron mobility in thin film composed of 4,6-bis(3,5-di(pyridine-4-yl)phenyl)-2-methylpyrimidine (B4PyMPM (B4)), which is almost two order of magnitude higher than mobility measured for very similar member of the family, 4,6-bis(3,5-di(pyridine-2-yl)phenyl)-2-methylpyrimidine (B2PyMPM (B2)). Herein, a comprehensive computational study is presented, wherein classical and ab initio methods are combined, to investigate the 2D H-Bond network in B4 and B2 thin films. The results indicate that B4 forms a larger number of intermolecular C-H···N H-Bonds that promote a higher orientational and positional order in B4 films, and superior electron transport properties.

The sedimentation of a spherical particle in an elastoviscoplastic fluid in proximity of a flat wall is investigated by direct numerical simulations. The governing equations under inertialess conditions are solved by the finite element method with an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation to manage the particle motion. The fluid is modeled with the Giesekus constitutive equation modified as proposed by Saramito (2007). The sedimentation, migration, and angular velocities are computed as a function of the particle-wall distance for various Weissenberg and Bingham numbers. The presence of a yield stress reduces the settling velocity and reverses the migration direction as compared to the purely viscoelastic case. The effect of the confining wall on the yielded and unyielded regions around the particle is investigated. The reversed particle migration phenomenon observed in the elastoviscoplastic fluid is attributed to the different shear rate distribution around the particle due to the presence of the yielded region. The negative wake behind the particle is discussed and related to the axial component of the viscoelastic stress.

A statistical mechanics theory of rubber-like elasticity in hydrogels characterized by explicitly non-Gaussian distribution functions (Laplace’s, Cauchy’s, and continuous Poisson’s in the exponential limit) of the end to end distribution is presented. Despite its formal complexity, the outcome of this approach leads to the formulation of reasonably simple models easily comparable with experimental data on polymer networks. In order to identify the most likely end-to-end length distribution in an arbitrary network, a theoretical-experimental approach based on Low Field NMR (LF-NMR) is proposed. Three different hydrogels are considered: agar 1 %, alginate 1 %, and scleroglucan 2 %.

Strings of equally spaced particles, also called particle trains, have been employed in several applications, including flow cytometry and particle or cell encapsulation. Recently, the formation of particle trains in viscoelastic liquids has been demonstrated. However, only a few studies have focused on the topic, with several questions remaining unanswered. We here perform numerical simulations and experiments to elucidate the effect of the confinement ratio on the self-ordering dynamics of particles suspended in a viscoelastic liquid and flowing on the centerline of a microfluidic channel. For a fixed channel size, the particles self-order on shorter distances as the particle size increases due to the enhanced hydrodynamic interactions. At relatively low linear concentrations, the relative particle velocities scale with the fourth power of the confinement ratio when plotted as a function of the distance between the particle surfaces normalized by the channel diameter. As the linear concentration increases, the average interparticle spacing reduces and the scaling is lost, with an increasing probability to form strings of particles in contact. To reduce the number of aggregates, a microfluidic device made of an array of trapezoidal elements is fabricated and tested. The particle aggregates reduce down to 5% of the overall particle number, significantly enhancing the ordering efficiency. A good agreement between numerical simulations and experiments is found.

We report the design of a microcapillary rheometer (μCR) that allows to perform experiments rapidly and in a broad range of shear rates (i.e., from 0.1 to 1000 s−1), using small amounts of material (i.e., just few milligrams). Additionally, multiple measurement parallelization makes it suitable for High-Throughput Rheological Experimentation of polymer melts (HT-Rheo-E). The novel rheometer consists of a set of three cylindrical microcapillaries in which the fluid flows driven by a controlled pressure. A camera, placed at the capillary exit, records the fluid motion to measure its flow rate, from which the fluid viscosity can be determined. The optimization of the setup allowed for reliable and fast viscosity measurements using ca. 10 mg of material. The current work reports the design of the rheometer and validation measurements on several model fluids. The microfabricated μCR is of potential interest for applications in quality control and research where rapid and repeated measurements using limited milligrams of polymer are required, as well as for High-Throughput-Experimentation of complex fluids (e.g., biological systems).

The formation of equally-spaced structures (trains) of rigid, spherical particles suspended in a viscoelastic fluid flowing in a cylindrical microchannel is investigated by numerical simulations. Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) have been employed to accurately compute the translational velocities of a system made by three particles aligned along a cylindrical channel for different interparticle distances. A shear-thinning, elastic fluid, modeled by the Giesekus costitutive equation, is considered. The DNS results are collected in a database used for simulating the dynamics of a multi-particle system. The evolution of the particle microstructure through the channel is presented in terms of interparticle distance distributions. The effects of the Deborah number (defined as the ratio between the fluid and flow characteristic times), the volume fraction, and the initial particle distribution on the train dynamics are investigated.

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are still the leading cause of death and disability worldwide despite the availability of well-established and effective preventive strategies. Aim: We aim to assess patients awareness of the main modifiable cardiovascular risk factors in a population with recent acute coronary syndrome (ACS) admitted in cardiac rehabilitation unit. Methods: 50 patients with recent ACS have been recruited. We used a 9-items questionnaire about awareness of CV risk factors and eating habits. Results: Many patients underestimate the role of physical activity (PA), cigarette smoking and diabetes as main CV risk factors. Although the importance of good eating habits as cardiovascular protector is well known, only few participants declare a healthy balanced diet. Conclusions: This study revealed low awareness of common CV risk factors among patients with recent ACS. Individual training plans and the use of technological development to improve awareness and adherence are needed especially in high risk population.

Powder bed additive manufacturing allows for the production of fully customizable parts and is of great interest for industrial applications. However, the repeatability of the parts and the uniformity of the mechanical properties are still an issue. More specifically, the physical mechanism of the spreading process of the powders, which significantly affects the characteristics of the final part, is not completely understood. In powder bed fusion technologies, the spreading is performed by a device, typically a roller or a blade, that collects the powders from the feedstock and successively deposits them in a layer of several dozens of microns that is then processed with a laser beam. In this work, an experimental approach is developed and employed to study the powder spreading process and analyze in detail the motion of the powders from the accumulation zone to the deposition stage. The presented experiments are carried out on a home-made device that reproduces the spreading process and enables the measurement of the characteristics of the powder bed. Furthermore, the correlation with the process parameters, e.g., the speed of the spreading device, is also investigated. These results can be used to obtain useful insights on the optimal window for the process parameters.

The goal of the SensApp FET-Open project is to develop an innovative super-sensor that will be able to detect Alzheimer’s disease (AD) biomarkers (β-amyloid, Tau and pTAU) in peripheral blood. Considering that nowadays an accurate diagnosis of AD requires the highly invasive withdrawal and analysis of cerebrospinal fluid, SensApp will represent a breakthrough in the field of AD diagnosis thanks to the ability to detect the early stage of the disease by a simple blood collection. We call Droplet-Split-and-Stack (DSS) the new technology that will emerge from SensApp. The achievement of SensApp goal is enabled by the interdisciplinary cooperation between different research institutions and one company involved in the key fields of the project, Vrije Universiteit Brussels, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, University of Linz, Ginolis Ltd, IRCCS Centre “Bonino Pulejo”, under the coordination of CNR-Institute of Applied Sciences and Intelligent Systems. This communication will illustrate the progress of the activities.

Viscoelastic polymer solutions have been widely employed as suspending liquids for a myriad of microfluidic applications including particle and cell focusing, sorting, and encapsulation. It has been recently shown that viscoelastic solutions can drive the formation of equally spaced particles called "particle trains" as a result of the viscoelasticity-mediated hydrodynamic interactions between adjacent particles. Despite their potential impact on applications such as droplet encapsulation and flow cytometry, only limited experimental studies on viscoelastic ordering are currently available. In this work, we demonstrate that a viscoelastic shear-thinning aqueous xanthan gum solution drives the self-assembly of particle trains on the centerline of a serpentine microfluidic device with a nearly circular cross section. After focusing, the flowing particles change their mutual distance and organize in aligned structures characterized by a preferential spacing, quantified in terms of distributions of the interparticle distance. We observe the occurrence of multi-particle strings, mainly doublets and triplets, that interrupt the continuity of the particle train. To account for the fluctuations in the number of flowing particles in the experimental window, we introduce the concept of local particle concentration, observing that an increase of the local particle concentration leads to an increase of doublets and triplets. We also demonstrate that using only a single tube to connect the sample to the microfluidic device results in a drastic reduction of doublets/triplets, thus leading to a more uniform particle train. Our findings establish the foundation for optimized applications such as deterministic droplet encapsulation in viscoelastic liquids and optimized flow cytometry.

The use of nanomaterials, thanks to their peculiar properties and versatility, is becoming central in an increasing number of scientific and engineering applications. At the same time, the growing concern towards environmental issues drives the seeking of alternative strategies for a safer and more sustainable production of nanoparticles. Here we focus on a low-energy, magnetically-driven wet milling technique for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles starting from a bulky solid. The proposed approach is simple, economical, sustainable, and provides numerous advantages, including the minimization of the nanoparticles air dispersion and a greater control over the final product. This process is investigated by experiments and discrete element method simulations to reproduce the movement of the grinding beads and study the collision dynamics. The effect of several parameters is analyzed, including the stirring bar velocity, its inclination, and the grinding bead size, to quantify the actual frequency, energy, and angle of collisions. Experiments reveal a non-monotonous effect of the stirring velocity on the abrasion efficiency, whereas numerical simulations highlight the prevalent tangential nature of collisions, which is only weakly affected by the stirring velocity. On the other hand, the stirring velocity affects the collision frequency and relative kinetic energy, suggesting the existence of an optimal parameters combination. Although a small variation of the stirring bar length does not significantly affect the collision dynamics, the use of grinding beads of different dimensions offers several tuning opportunities.

International audience; In an effort to gain a comprehensive picture of the interfacial states in bulk heterojunction solar cells, we provide a combined experimental−theoretical analysis of the energetics and dynamics of low-lying electronic charge-transfer (CT) states in donor:acceptor blends with a large frontier orbital energy offset. By varying the blend composition and temperature, we unravel the static and dynamic contributions to the disordered density of states (DOS) of the CT-state manifold and assess their recombination to the ground state. Namely, we find that static disorder (conformational and electrostatic) shapes the CT DOS and that fast nonradiative recombination crops the low-energy tail of the distribution probed by external quantum efficiency (EQE) measurements (thereby largely contributing to voltage losses). Our results then question the standard practice of extracting microscopic parameters such as exciton energy and energetic disorder from EQE.

Clinical features and natural history of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) differ widely among different countries and during different phases of the pandemia. Here, we aimed to evaluate the case fatality rate (CFR) and to identify predictors of mortality in a cohort of COVID-19 patients admitted to three hospitals of Northern Italy between March 1 and April 28, 2020. All these patients had a confirmed diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection by molecular methods. During the study period 504/1697 patients died; thus, overall CFR was 29.7%. We looked for predictors of mortality in a subgroup of 486 patients (239 males, 59%; median age 71 years) for whom sufficient clinical data were available at data cut-off. Among the demographic and clinical variables considered, age, a diagnosis of cancer, obesity and current smoking independently predicted mortality. When laboratory data were added to the model in a further subgroup of patients, age, the diagnosis of cancer, and the baseline PaO2/FiO2 ratio were identified as independent predictors of mortality. In conclusion, the CFR of hospitalized patients in Northern Italy during the ascending phase of the COVID-19 pandemic approached 30%. The identification of mortality predictors might contribute to better stratification of individual patient risk.

Singlet exciton fission is a spin-allowed process in organic semiconductors by which one absorbed photon generates two triplet excitons. Theory predicts that singlet fission is mediated by intermolecular charge-transfer states in solid-state materials with appropriate singlet-triplet energy spacing, but direct evidence for the involvement of such states in the process has not been provided yet. Here, we report on the observation of subpicosecond singlet fission in mixed films of pentacene and perfluoropentacene. By combining transient spectroscopy measurements to nonadiabatic quantum-dynamics simulations, we show that direct excitation in the charge-transfer absorption band of the mixed films leads to the formation of triplet excitons, unambiguously proving that they act as intermediate states in the fission process.

Clogging is the mechanism that interrupts the flow in confined geometries due to the complete blockage of the channel cross section. It represents a critical issue in the processing of particle suspensions for both industrial and biological applications, and it is particularly relevant in microfluidics and membrane technology due to the high particle confinement and the difficult device cleaning. Although numerous experimental and numerical studies have been carried out to understand the mechanism governing this complex multiscale phenomenon, the picture is not yet clear and many questions still remain, especially at the particle level. In this regard, the numerical simulations may represent a useful investigation tool since they provide a direct insight to quantities not easily accessible from experiments. In this work, a detailed computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method simulation study on the clogging mechanism in a microchannel with planar contraction is carried out. Both constant flow rate and constant pressure drop conditions are investigated, highlighting the effect of flow conditions, particle volume fraction, cohesion forces, and contraction angle. The onset of clogging conditions is discussed.

Laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing is among the most used industrial processes, allowing for the production of customizable and geometrically complex parts at relatively low cost. Although different aspects of the powder spreading process have been investigated, questions remain on the process repeatability on the actual beam–powder bed interaction. Given the influence of the formed bed on the quality of the final part, understanding the spreading mechanism is crucial for process optimization. In this work, a Discrete Element Method (DEM) model of the spreading process is adopted to investigate the spreading process and underline the physical phenomena occurring. With parameters validated through ad hoc experiments, two spreading velocities, accounting for two different flow regimes, are simulated. The powder distribution in both the accumulation and deposition zone is investigated. Attention is placed on how density, effective layer thickness, and particle size distribution vary throughout the powder bed. The physical mechanism leading to the observed characteristics is discussed, effectively defining the window for the process parameters.

The transcription factor Forkhead box E1 (FOXE1) is a key player in thyroid development and function and has been identified by genome-wide association studies as a susceptibility gene for papillary thyroid cancer. Several cancer-associated polymorphisms fall into gene regulatory regions and are likely to affect FOXE1 expression levels. However, the possibility that changes in FOXE1 expression modulate thyroid cancer development has not been investigated. Here, we describe the effects of FOXE1 gene dosage reduction on cancer phenotype in vivo. Mice heterozygous for FOXE1 null allele (FOXE1+/&minus, ) were crossed with a BRAFV600E-inducible cancer model to develop thyroid cancer in either a FOXE1+/+ or FOXE1+/&minus, genetic background. In FOXE1+/+ mice, cancer histological features are quite similar to that of human high-grade papillary thyroid carcinomas, while cancers developed with reduced FOXE1 gene dosage maintain morphological features resembling less malignant thyroid cancers, showing reduced proliferation index and increased apoptosis as well. Such cancers, however, appear severely undifferentiated, indicating that FOXE1 levels affect thyroid differentiation during neoplastic transformation. These results show that FOXE1 dosage exerts pleiotropic effects on thyroid cancer phenotype by affecting histology and regulating key markers of tumor differentiation and progression, thus suggesting the possibility that FOXE1 could behave as lineage-specific oncogene in follicular cell-derived thyroid cancer.

Solid&ndash, liquid separation is a key unit operation in the wastewater treatment, generally consisting of coagulation and flocculation steps to promote aggregation and increase the particle size, followed by sedimentation, where the particles settle due to the effect of gravity. The sedimentation efficiency is related to the hydrodynamic behavior of the suspended particles that, in turn, depends on the aggregate morphology. In addition, the non-Newtonian rheology of sludges strongly affects the drag coefficient of the suspended particles, leading to deviations from the known settling behavior in Newtonian fluids. In this work, we use direct numerical simulations to study the hydrodynamic drag of fractal-shaped particles suspended in a shear-thinning fluid modeled by the power-law constitutive equation. The fluid dynamics governing equations are solved for an applied force with different orientations uniformly distributed over the unit sphere. The resulting particle velocities are interpolated to compute the aggregate dynamics and the drag correction coefficient. A remarkable effect of the detailed microstructure of the aggregate on the sedimentation process is observed. The orientational dynamics shows a rich behavior characterized by steady-state, bistable, and periodic regimes. In qualitative agreement with spherical particles, shear-thinning increases the drag correction coefficient. Elongated aggregates sediment more slowly than sphere-like particles, with a lower terminal velocity as the aspect ratio increases.

Additive manufacturing is nowadays applied in many different fields, ranging from amateur prototyping to industrial production. In particular, small-sized stereolithographic apparatuses are widely spread due to their low cost, high accuracy and easiness of use. Despite the large diffusion of this technology, its sustainability aspects are not enough investigated, and a general lack of tools for the life-cycle assessment can be observed. The present paper proposes a framework for the development of a life-cycle impact metrics of stereolithography production in a certain area. All the contributions to the overall environmental impact of the manufacturing process are attributed to two main parameters, i.e. the amount of polymerised resin and the time of the process, thus allowing to easily integrate the results within the life-cycle assessment of a generic part. The parametrisation of the LCA also allows getting an estimation of the life-cycle impact from a digital representation of the part.

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) offers promise for all-organic light-emitting diodes with quantum efficiencies competing with those of transition-metal-based phosphorescent devices. While computational efforts have so far largely focused on gas-phase calculations of singlet and triplet excitation energies, the design of TADF materials requires multiple methodological developments targeting among others a quantitative description of electronic excitation energetics, fully accounting for environmental electrostatics and molecular conformational effects, the accurate assessment of the quantum mechanical interactions that trigger the elementary electronic processes involved in TADF, and a robust picture for the dynamics of these fundamental processes. In this Perspective, we describe some recent progress along those lines and highlight the main challenges ahead for modeling, which we hope will be useful to the whole TADF community. Despite significant efforts, a complete mechanistic understanding of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials has not yet been fully uncovered. Part of the complexity arises from the apparent dichotomy between the need for close energy resonance and for a significant spin-orbit coupling between alike charge-transfer singlet and triplet excitations. Here we show, in the case of reference carbazole derivatives, that this dichotomy can be resolved in a fully atomistic model accounting for thermal fluctuations of the molecular conformations and microscopic electronic polarization effects in amorphous films. These effects yield electronic excitations with a dynamically mixed charge-transfer and localized character, resulting in thermally averaged singlet-triplet energy differences and interconversion rates in excellent agreement with careful spectroscopic studies. The dynamics of a stick-slip “Janus” spherical particle suspended in a Newtonian fluid flowing in a cylindrical microchannel is studied by direct numerical simulations. Partial slip is imposed on half of the particle surface, whereas the no-slip boundary condition is present on the other half. The finite element method is used to solve the balance equations under creeping flow conditions. The translational and rotational velocities of the particle are evaluated at several orientations and distances from the tube centerline. The trajectories are then reconstructed by solving the kinematic equations where the velocities are taken by interpolating the simulation data. The particle dynamics is investigated by varying the initial position and orientation, the slip parameter, and the confinement ratio. The results, presented in terms of particle trajectories and phase portraits, highlight the existence of two relevant regimes: a periodic oscillation or a migration toward the tube axis for particle positions sufficiently far from or near the centerline, respectively. International audience; We address the question of charge delocalization in amorphous and crystalline fullerene solids by performing state of the art calculations encompassing force-field molecular dynamics, microelectrostatic and quantum-chemical methods. The solution of a tight-binding model built from spatially (down to atomistic scale) and time (down to fs) resolved calculations yields the density of electronic states for the charge carriers and their energy-dependent intermolecular delocalization. Both pristine C-60 and the soluble PC61BM/PC71BM acceptors may sustain high-energy states that spread over a few tens of molecules irrespective of morphology, yet electrostatic disorder (mostly dipolar and static in nature) makes the thermally available electron states collapse to hardly more than one molecule in PC61BM/PC71BM, while it has a much more limited impact in the case of the bare C-60. Implications of these results for charge transport and exciton dissociation at donor-fullerene interfaces are discussed.
