Abstract

A Soft X-ray Laser project (the SXL) aiming to produce FEL radiation in the range of 1 to 5 nm is currently in a conceptual design phase and a report on the design is expected to be delivered by March 2021. The FEL will be driven by the existing 3 GeV linac at MAX IV laboratory, which also serves as injector for the two storage rings. The science case has been pushed by a large group of mainly Swedish users and consists of experiments ranging from AMO physics to condensed matter, chemistry and imaging in life science. In this contribution, we will present the current conceptual design of the accelerator and the FEL operation modes together with a general overview of the beamline and experimental station. In particular design options for the FEL will be discussed in conjunction with the features of the electron beam from the MAX IV linac and the connection with the proposed experiments., QC 20201112

Abstract

A Soft X-ray Laser (SXL) beamline utilising FEL technology is being designed for the Short Pulse Facility (SPF) at the MAX IV Laboratory. A conceptual design study has been started following on the scientific case already prepared in collaboration between several Swedish Universities and driven by a strong (Swedish) user demand. The baseline goal of the SXL beamline is to generate intense and short pulses in the range 1-5 nm (0.2-1 keV). The system is building on the MAX IV linac system, already today providing 100 fs 3 GeV and pulses compressed to 100 fs for other applications within the SPF. 6. Analisi del processo di deformazione a caldo e dell’evoluzione microstrutturale di un acciaio al 3% Cr mediante prove di torsione

Abstract

Lo studio dell’evoluzione della microstruttura durante il processo di deformazione plastica di acciai rivestefondamentale importanza. In questo lavoro è stato analizzato il comportamento a deformazione a caldo di unacciaio 3% Cr tramite prove di torsione eseguite nell’intervallo di temperatura 1000?1200°C e con e.compresatra 0.01 e 1.00s-1. L’analisi condotta ha consentito di determinare le costanti della legge di potenza che regolail processo di deformazione a caldo (A0 , Q ed n ) tramite le quali è possibile ottimizzare i processi industriali.L’evoluzione microstrutturale durante la deformazione a caldo è stata valutata in termini di grado di percentualedi fase ricristallizzata ed è analizzata attraverso microscopia elettronica a trasmissione (TEM) e microscopiaad orientazione di immagine-diffrazione da retrodiffusione elettronica (OIM?EBSD). In particolare attraversoquesta ultima tecnica viene stimata la frazione volumetrica di ricristallizzato in termini di parametro GOS (GrainOrientation Spread), che meglio sembra interpretare l’evoluzione microstrutturale dopo deformazione a caldo inmicrostrutture martensitiche.

7. The FEL in the SXL project at MAX IV.

Abstract

In this paper the design of the free-electron laser (FEL) in the SXL (Soft X-ray Laser) project at the MAX IV Laboratory is presented. The target performance parameters originate in a science case put forward by Swedish users and the SXL FEL is foreseen to be driven by the existing MAX IV 3 GeV linac. The SXL project is planned to be realized in different stages and in this paper the focus is on Phase 1, where the basic operation mode for the FEL will be SASE (self-amplified spontaneous emission), with an emphasis on short pulses. Simulation results for two linac bunches (high and low charge) with different pulse duration are illustrated, as well as the performance for two-color/two-pulses mode and power enhancement through tapering. Besides standard SASE and optical klystron configurations, the FEL setup is also tailored to allow for advanced seeding schemes operations. Finally possible upgrades that will be implemented in a second phase of the project are discussed., (open access.)

Abstract

The FemtoMAX beamline facilitates studies of the structural dynamics of materials. Such studies are of fundamental importance for key scientific problems related to programming materials using light, enabling new storage media and new manufacturing techniques, obtaining sustainable energy by mimicking photosynthesis, and gleaning insights into chemical and biological functional dynamics. The FemtoMAX beamline utilizes the MAX IV linear accelerator as an electron source. The photon bursts have a pulse length of 100 fs, which is on the timescale of molecular vibrations, and have wavelengths matching interatomic distances (Å). The uniqueness of the beamline has called for special beamline components. This paper presents the beamline design including ultrasensitive X-ray beam-position monitors based on thin Ce:YAG screens, efficient harmonic separators and novel timing tools.
