The underutilized cement-rich fine fraction of concrete-based demolition waste is a potential sorbent for aqueous metal ion contaminants. In this study, crushed concrete fines (CCF) were found to exclude 33.9 mg g−1 of Cr3+, 35.8 mg g−1 of Ni2+, and 7.16 mg g−1 of Sr2+ from ~1000 ppm single metal nitrate solutions (CCF:solution 25 mg cm−3) under static batch conditions at 20 °C after 3 weeks. The removal of Sr2+ followed a pseudo-second-order reaction (k2 = 3.1 × 10−4 g mg−1 min−1, R2 = 0.999), whereas a pseudo-first-order model described the removal of Cr3+ (k1 = 2.3 × 10−4 min−1, R2 = 0.998) and Ni2+ (k1 = 5.7 × 10−4 min−1, R2 = 0.991). In all cases, the principal mechanism of interaction was the alkali-mediated precipitation of solubility-limiting phases on the surface of the CCF. Four consecutive deionized water leaching procedures (CCF:water 0.1 g cm−3) liberated 0.53%, 0.88%, and 8.39% of the bound Cr3+, Ni2+, and Sr2+ species, respectively. These findings indicate that CCF are an effective sorbent for the immobilization and retention of aqueous Cr3+ and Ni2+ ions, although they are comparatively ineffectual in the removal and sustained exclusion of Sr2+ ions. As is commonly noted with Portland cement-based sorbents, slow removal kinetics, long equilibrium times, the associated release of Ca2+ ions, high pH, and the formation of loose floc may preclude these materials from conventional wastewater treatments. This notwithstanding, they are potentially suitable for incorporation into permeable reactive barriers for the containment of metal species in contaminated groundwaters, sediments, and soils. Construction and demolition activities generate approximately two thirds of the world’s waste, with concrete-based demolition material accounting for the largest proportion. Primary aggregates are recovered and reused, although the cement-rich fine fraction is underutilised. In this study, single metal batch sorption experiments confirmed that crushed concrete fines (CCF) are an effective sorbent for the maximum exclusion of 45.2 mg g−1 Cd2+, 38.4 mg g−1 Co2+ and 56.0 mg g−1 MoO4 2− ions from aqueous media. The principal mechanisms of sorption were determined, by scanning electron microscopy of the metal-laden CCF, to be co-precipitation with Ca2+ ions released from the cement to form solubility limiting phases. The removal of Co2+ and MoO4 2− ions followed a zero-order reaction and that of Cd2+ was best described by a pseudo-second-order model. The Langmuir model provided the most appropriate description of the steady state immobilisation of Cd2+ and Co2+, whereas the removal of MoO4 2− conformed to the Freundlich isotherm. Long equilibration times (>120 h), loose floc formation and high pH are likely to limit the use of CCF in many conventional wastewater treatment applications; although, these properties could be usefully exploited in reactive barriers for the management of contaminated soils, sediments and groundwater. Landfilling and stockpiling unrecycled colored container glass represents a considerable failure in sustainability with respect to the conservation of energy and mineral resources. In this study, the single-step hydrothermal synthesis of low-silica zeolites from a mixture of waste green container glass and aluminum foil (Al:Si = 1) in 4 M NaOH(aq) at 125 °C was followed at 1, 3, 7 and 14 days. The principal phases, sodalite and cancrinite, appeared within 1 day accompanied by minor quantities of hydrogarnet and tobermorite arising from a stoichiometric excess of calcium ions in the parent glass. Products of 63, 67, 71 and 72% crystallinity were obtained at 1, 3, 7 and 14 days, respectively, with partial successive conversion of sodalite to cancrinite over time. Ion-exchange and catalytic applications of sodalite and cancrinite arise from the high anionic charge of the 1:1 ratio of alternating SiO44- and AlO45- units within their aluminosilicate frameworks. In this respect, the uptake capacity of the 14-day zeolitic product for Cu2+ and Cd2+ ions (1.58 meq g-1 and 1.66 meq g-1, respectively) was within the expected range for zeolites and compared favorably with those reported for other inorganic sorbents derived from industrial and municipal wastes. ObjectiveTo determine whether the antimicrobial nature of a fatty acid chelate temporary dental cement can be enhanced by the addition of 5% cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC). Materials and methodsThe temporary cement, Cavex Temporary was employed, and additions of CPC were made to either the base or the catalyst paste prior to mixing the cement. Release of CPC from set cement specimens was followed using reverse-phase HPLC for a period of up to 2 weeks following specimen preparation. Potential interactions between Cavex and CPC were examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and antimicrobial effects were determined using zone of inhibition measurements after 24 h with disc-shaped specimens in culturedStreptococcus mutans. ResultsFTIR showed no interaction between CPC and the components of the cement. CPC release was found to follow a diffusion mechanism for the first 6 h or so, and to equilibrate after approximately 2 weeks, with no significant differences between release profiles when the additive was incorporated into the base or the catalyst paste. Diffusion was rapid, and had a diffusion coefficient of approximately 1 × 10−9 m2 s−1in both cases. Total release was in the range 10–12% of the CPC loading. Zones of inhibition around discs containing CPC were significantly larger than those around the control discs of CPC-free cement. ConclusionsThe antimicrobial character of this temporary cement can be enhanced by the addition of CPC. Current environmental directives to conserve resources and to divert waste streams have generated significant interest in mineral recycling. In this respect, this preliminary study has demonstrated that lithium metasilicate can be prepared by hydrothermal reaction between waste container glass and lithium hydroxide solutions at 100 °C. Minor proportions of calcium hydroxide, calcite, lithium carbonate and tobermorite were also produced during the reaction. Percentage crystallinity and proportion of lithium metasilicate in the reaction product were found to increase as functions of lithium hydroxide concentration (between 1 and 4 M). This research has also shown that the lithium metasilicate phase can take up 6.4 mmol/g of Zn2+ ions after 24 h during batch sorption. Further work to optimise the yield and to appraise the antimicrobial properties of Zn2+-bearing lithium metasilicate is now warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

'Tooth-coloured' ProRoot MTA is an endodontic cement comprising an 80:20 wt% mixture of white Portland cement (WPC) and bismuth oxide. The setting reactions within this cement system are not currently well understood. Accordingly, this research monitors the early hydration chemistry of ProRoot MTA by X-ray diffraction, solid state nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies, and isothermal calorimetry. The initial rate of hydration is rapid with 40% having reacted within the first 24 h; it then slows considerably such that within 3 days the hydration reactions are 58% complete and only increase by a further 1% within one week. The relatively fast reaction of alite to form C-S-H gel and portlandite, and the development of the calcium aluminosulphate phases, are as would be anticipated for the hydration of pure WPC. This study examines the impact of 20 wt% zirconium oxide nanoparticles on the early hydration kinetics of white Portland cement by isothermal conduction calorimetry and transmission electron microscopy. The findings confirm that the nano-ZrC2 particles do not directly participate in the chemical reactions during cement hydration; although, they do divert the normal hydration processes and accelerate the initial setting reactions. The rate of heat evolution and the extent of the exotherm associated with these reactions are reduced in the presence of nano-ZrO2. The incorporation of nano-ZrO2 into the cement also decreases the solubility of the silicate phases but does not compromise its capacity to release hydroxide ions. There was no observed difference in the antimicrobial activity of the nano-ZrO2-blended and unblended cement pastes against S. aureus and E. coli; however, a modest reduction in this property was noted against P. aeruginosa for the blended cement. In this study, the layer-lattice calcium silicate hydrate mineral, tobermorite, was synthesized from waste green or amber container glass and separately ion-exchanged with Ag+ or Zn2+ ions under batch conditions. Hydrothermal treatment of stoichiometrically adjusted mixtures of waste glass and calcium oxide in 4 M NaOH(aq) at 125 °C yielded tobermorite products of ~75% crystallinity with mean silicate chain lengths of 17 units after one week. Maximum uptake of Zn2+ ions, ~0.55 mmol g−1, occurred after 72 h, and maximum uptake of Ag+ ions, ~0.59 mmol g−1, was established within 6 h. No significant differences in structure or ion-exchange behavior were observed between the tobermorites derived from either green or amber glass. Composite membranes of the biopolymer, chitosan, incorporating the original or ion-exchanged tobermorite phases were prepared by solvent casting, and their antimicrobial activities against S. aureus and E. coli were evaluated using the Kirby–Bauer assay. S. aureus and E. coli formed biofilms on pure chitosan and chitosan surfaces blended with the original tobermorites, whereas the composites containing Zn2+-substituted tobermorites defended against bacterial colonization. Distinct, clear zones were observed around the composites containing Ag+-substituted tobermorites which arose from the migration of the labile Ag+ ions from the lattices. This research has indicated that waste glass-derived tobermorites are functional carriers for antimicrobial ions with potential applications as fillers in polymeric composites to defend against the proliferation and transmission of pathogenic bacteria. This study investigated the impact of different calcium reagents on the morphology, composition, bioactivity and biocompatibility of two-component (CaO-SiO2) glasses produced by the Stöber process with respect to their potential application in guided tissue regeneration (GTR) membranes for periodontal repair. The properties of the binary glasses were compared with those of pure silica Stöber particles. The direct addition of calcium chloride (CC), calcium nitrate (CN), calcium methoxide (CM) or calcium ethoxide (CE) at 5 mol % with respect to tetraethyl orthosilicate in the reagent mixture gave rise to textured, micron-sized aggregates rather than monodispersed ~500 nm spheres obtained from the pure silica Stöber synthesis. The broadening of the Si-O-Si band at ~1100 cm−1 in the infrared spectra of the calcium-doped glasses indicated that the silicate network was depolymerised by the incorporation of Ca2+ ions and energy dispersive X-ray analysis revealed that, in all cases, the Ca:Si ratios were significantly lower than the nominal value of 0.05. The distribution of Ca2+ ions was also found to be highly inhomogeneous in the methoxide-derived glass. All samples released soluble silica species on exposure to simulated body fluid, although only calcium-doped glasses exhibited in vitro bioactivity via the formation of hydroxyapatite. The biocompatibilities of model chitosan-glass GTR membranes were assessed using human MG63 osteosarcoma cells and were found to be of the order: CN < pure silica ≈ CC << CM ≈ CE. Calcium nitrate is the most commonly reported precursor for the sol-gel synthesis of bioactive glasses; however, the incomplete removal of nitrate ions during washing compromised the cytocompatibility of the resulting glass. The superior bioactivity and biocompatibility of the alkoxide-derived glasses is attributed to their ease of dissolution and lack of residual toxic anions. Overall, calcium ethoxide was found to be the preferred precursor with respect to extent of calcium-incorporation, homogeneity, bioactivity and biocompatibility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bismuth oxide (monoclinic α-Bi 2 O 3 ) and zirconium oxide (monoclinic ZrO 2 ) are the most popular radiopacifiers in commercial Portland cement-based endodontic restoratives, yet their effects on the setting and hydration reactions are not fully understood. This study compares the impact of 20 wt.% of Bi 2 O 3 or ZrO 2 on the early hydration reactions and C-S-H gel structure of white Portland cement (WPC). Cement paste samples were hydrated at 37.5 °C prior to analysis by 29 Si and 27 Al magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy at 3 h and 24 h, and transmission electron microscopy at 3 h. Initial and final setting times were determined using a Vicat apparatus and reaction kinetics were monitored by isothermal conduction calorimetry. Bi 2 O 3 was found to prolong initial and final setting times and retard the degree of hydration by 32% at 24 h. Heat evolution during the acceleration and deceleration phases of the hydration process was reduced and the exotherm arising from renewed ettringite formation was delayed and diminished in the presence of Bi 2 O 3 . Conversely, ZrO 2 had no significant impact on either setting time; although, it accelerated hydration by 23% within 24 h. Increases in the mean silicate chain length and the extent of aluminum substitution in the C-S-H gel were observed in the presence of both radiopacifying agents after 24 h relative to those of the unblended WPC. The Bi 2 O 3 and ZrO 2 particles remained intact within the cement matrix and neither bismuth nor zirconium was chemically incorporated in the hydration products.

Biodentine is one of the most successful and widely studied among the second generation of calcium silicate-based endodontic cements. Despite its popularity, the setting reactions of this cement system are not currently well understood. In particular, very little is known about the formation and structure of the major calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel phase, as it is difficult to obtain information on this poorly crystalline material by the traditional techniques of powder X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In this study, the hydration reactions of Biodentine are monitored by XRD, FTIR, isothermal conduction calorimetry and, for the first time, 29 Si magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 29 Si MAS NMR) is used to investigate the structures of the anhydrous calcium silicate phases and the early C-S-H gel product. XRD analysis indicated that the anhydrous powder comprises 73.8 wt% triclinic tricalcium silicate, 4.45 wt% monoclinic β-dicalcium silicate, 16.6 wt% calcite and 5.15 wt% zirconium oxide. Calorimetry confirmed that the induction period for hydration is short, and that the setting reactions are rapid with a maximum heat evolution of 28.4 mW g -1 at 42 min. A progressive shift in the FTIR peak maximum from 905 to 995 cm -1 for the O-Si-O stretching vibrations accompanies the formation of the C-S-H gel during 1 week. The extent of hydration was determined by 29 Si MAS NMR to be 87.0%, 88.8% and 93.7% at 6 h, 1 day and 1 week, respectively, which is significantly higher than that of MTA. The mean silicate chain length (MCL) of the C-S-H gel was also estimated by this technique to be 3.7 at 6 h and 1 day, and to have increased to 4.1 after 1 week. The rapid hydration kinetics of Biodentine, arising from the predominance of the tricalcium silicate phase, small particle size, and 'filler effect' of calcite and zirconium oxide, is a favorable characteristic of an endodontic cement, and the high values of MCL are thought to promote the durability of the cement matrix.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of 10 wt% benzalkonium chloride (TB-BAC) or 10 wt% cetylpyridinium chloride (TB-CPC) on the antimicrobial properties of the orthodontic adhesive primer, Transbond XTT (TB). Antimicrobial activity was assessed using a zone of inhibition diffusion test and the release of the antimicrobial compounds was monitored by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Shear bond strength (SBS) was tested using bovine enamel. Control, TB, specimens failed to demonstrate intrinsic antibacterial activity at 1, 7 and 14 days; whereas, TB-BAC and TB-CPC showed antibacterial effects at all times. HPLC analysis indicated no significant differences in the release behaviour of TB-BAC and TB-CPC (t-test, p > 0.05), except for the 7-day release which was higher for TB-BAC (p < 0.05). By 14 days the extents of release were 27 ± 2% and 25 ± 5% of the total initial loading for TB-BAC and TB-CPC, respectively. The incorporation of 10 wt% BAC or CPC in Transbond XTT adhesive primer also resulted in superior shear bond strength at 7 and 14 days (Fisher s LSD, p < 0.05) with no significant change in the mode ofbracket failure under shear stress (Pearson's chi-squared, p > 0.05)., (Sociedad Argentina de Investigación Odontológica.)
