The majority of the world's population now lives in cities, where reduced levels of native biodiversity, coupled with fewer opportunities for people to experience nature, are expected to result in an urban public increasingly disconnected from the natural environment. Residential gardens have great potential to both support native species and allow people daily contact with nature. Embracing the epistemological assumption that urban residents' interactions with nature in their gardens and parks may be complex, unpredictable, contradictory, and context-dependent, we used an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach to explore the human relationship with urban nature in a New Zealand city. We conducted 21 semi-structured "go-along" interviews to facilitate a deeper understanding of participants' personal experiences of nature in parks and gardens. Interviews revealed a tension between stated values and concrete actions affecting urban biodiversity in private gardens. This value-action gap stemmed from the multiple purposes and values that people hold for their gardens, which do not necessarily align with conservation of native nature. By recognizing that urban residents hold multiple values and want their gardens to fulfill multiple purposes, local authorities aiming to promote nature conservation in cities can design wildlife gardening programs that meet these multiple needs and reconcile conflicting priorities. This review summarises the ecology and biology of the North Island New Zealand endemic evergreen epiphytic shrub Pittosporum kirkii Hook.f. ex Kirk (Pittosporaceae). While mainly found as an epiphyte associated with other nest epiphytes such as Astelia spp., it also exhibits rupestral and terrestrial lifestyles. Pittosporum kirkii is distinguished from other members of New Zealand Pittosporum by distinctive thick, fleshy, coriaceous leaves, which may assist survival in water-stressed habitats. Water availability is speculated to be the most limiting factor across all of the habitats that P. kirkii occupies and when under water stress, the species utilises a desiccation postponement strategy. Pittosporum kirkii has a restricted distribution with strong habitat preferences restricting it to upper lowland and lower montane mainly old-growth forest ecosystems of the upper North Island. The highest probabilities of P. kirkii occurrence lie within mean annual temperature between 7.8°C and 15.6°C, mean annual rainfall between 1172 and 4432 mm, mean minimum solar radiation in the coldest month between 4.8 and 6.6 MJ/m2/day, and vapour pressure deficits between 0.15 and 0.39 kPa. Pittosporum kirkii is currently listed as at risk–declining and qualified as data-poor and partial decline because of a lack of autecological information. Palatability to introduced brushtail possums and forest clearance have been suggested as the main agents of decline. Due to significant morphological differences between mainland New Zealand and Great Barrier Island/Aotea populations, further study is warranted to determine distinctness. Including P. kirkii in restoration plans and conservation monitoring is recommended in areas where it naturally occurs as this species is recognised as an indicator of overall forest health. Further detailed research on P. kirkii would be invaluable to fill the current gap in knowledge on its ongoing threats, sexual expression, pollination and seed dispersal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review summarises the biology and ecology of the distinctive North Island New Zealand endemic treeIxerba brexioides(A.Cunn.). The genusIxerbais monotypic and belongs to the family Strasburgeriaceae found only in New Zealand and New Caledonia.Ixerba brexioides(tāwari) is a New Zealand tree restricted to rain forests north of 39°S latitude in areas of mature soil in mild, moist climates. With conspicuous white flowers displayed en masse between November and January each year and dark green, long and toothed leaves arranged in whorls, it has earned recognition as one of New Zealand’s most attractive trees. Inflorescences are predominantly insect pollinated, with occasional bird visitation. Capsular fruit are produced in early autumn and dehisce to reveal dark black-purple seeds with an orange fleshy aril that are bird dispersed. Seeds germinate quickly, without a dormancy period, most commonly on soil, logs and mounds, but grow slowly (1.6–2.4 mm year diameter growth rate) in shade conditions until canopy gaps open. Chemicals associated with its leaves include ursolic acid and proanthocyanidins, but their significance is unknown. Agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis defined four main forest types dominated byI. brexioidescentred on Northland, Waikato, Coromandel and Urewera, the floristically richest occurring in Northland. The genus first appeared in the fossil record in New Zealand in the late Eocene. Flowers ofI. brexioides(whākou) were historically used by Māori in garlands and necklaces, while peak flowering was a signal to harvest certain crops.Ixerba brexioideshoney is popular and honey crops are sought after in areas where the trees are abundant and accessible to beekeepers. Though not currently threatened, the distinctive and geographically limitedI. brexioidesis one of the many New Zealand trees requiring additional research. National Science Challenges (NSCs) were a decade-long science policy experiment for Aotearoa New Zealand. The leadership skills required to uphold the mission-led intent, build trust with stakeholders, support transdisciplinary research and invest in Māori knowledge have not previously been explored. We identify 15 elements of leadership common to NSCs, with a focus on New Zealand’s Biological Heritage Ngā Koiora Tuku Iho (BioHeritage). We draw parallels with global efforts to modernise contemporary science policy instruments to derive value from public investment in research, science and innovation and to value Indigenous knowledge as a critical contributor to addressing complex environmental crises. We conclude with 10 recommendations for the future of the Research, Science & Innovation (RS&I) sector in Aotearoa. Implementing the recommendations would ensure that leadership capability and capacity built by NSCs endures for the benefit of future generations of researchers, Indigenous knowledge holders, society and the environment. Urbanization causes a variety of negative ecological impacts, impairing forests, streams, and other ecosystems. While urban forests are the subject of increasing research attention, planted urban forests are less well-understood than remnant forests; however, these systems may be distinct in terms of ecosystem structure and function. The current study investigates a chronosequence of reforested urban sites in Lexington, KY, USA, with a focus on overstory and understory woody plant community characteristics. Monitoring plots were established in each of the 20 sites; tree height, dbh, and species were surveyed for the overstory, and species and height were surveyed for the understory. Canopy height increased non-linearly with time since planting, rapidly increasing in years 6–10, but remaining relatively steady after year 15. While the overstory was dominated by planted native species, the understory was predominately non-native species, some of which are considered invasive. Overall, the nonlinear logistic relationship of canopy height to time since planting may be driven by species-specific effects—with trees such as ash (Fraxinus spp. L.) and black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) important during the early years after planting, but declining over time due to pests and other pressures. Alternatively, this complex relationship of canopy height with time may be driven by uncontrolled factors such as site quality, landscape position, planted species, etc. The significance of invasive species in the understory suggests that the long-term health of these sites will be compromised without intentional ongoing maintenance to ensure continued forest development toward desired native community characteristics. (1) Research Highlights: Afforestation is one of the most effective urban greening practices for mitigating a variety of environmental issues. Globally, municipal governments have launched large-scale afforestation programs in metropolitan areas during the last decades. However, the spatiotemporal dynamics of urban greenspace patterns are seldom studied during such afforestation programs. (2) Background and Objectives: In this study, the Beijing Plain Afforestation Project (BPAP), which planted 70,711 ha of trees in only four years, was examined by integrating spatial and landscape analysis. To evaluate the real-world outcomes of this massive program, we investigated the spatial-temporal dynamics of landscape patterns during the implementation process to identify potential impacts and challenges for future management of new afforestation. (3) Materials and Methods: We analyzed the transition of various patch types and sizes, applied landscape indicators to measure the temporal changes in urban greenspace patterns, and used the landscape expansion index to quantify the rate and extent of greenspace spatial expansion. (4) Results: Our results illustrated that the implementation of afforestation in the Beijing plain area had generally achieved its initial goal of increasing the proportion of land devoted to forest (increased 8.43%) and parks (increased 0.23%). Afforestation also accelerated the conversion of small-size greenspaces to large-size patches. However, the significant discrepancies found between planned and actual afforestation sites, as well as the large conversion of cropland to forest, may present major challenges for project optimization and future management. (5) Conclusions: This study demonstrated that spatial analysis is a useful and potentially replicable method that can rapidly provide new data to support further afforestation ecosystem assessments and provide spatial insights into the optimization of large inner-city afforestation projects. Background and Objectives: As urbanisation is a significant global trend, there is a profound need for biodiversity protection in urban ecosystems. Moreover, the potential of urban green space to support urban biodiversity should be appreciated. Butterflies are environmental indicators that are sensitive to urbanisation. Therefore, it is important to identify butterfly distribution patterns and the factors influencing butterfly diversity and species composition in urban parks within cities. Research Highlights: To our knowledge, ours is the first study evaluating the effects of both land cover and local habitat features on butterfly species composition in urban parks of Beijing, China. Materials and Methods: In this study, we surveyed butterfly richness and abundance in 28 urban parks in Beijing, China. The parks differed in age and location in the urban area. Meanwhile, we investigated the green space in the surroundings of the parks at multi-spatial scales at the landscape level. We also investigated local park characteristics including the age of the park (Age), perimeter/area ratio of the park (SQPRA), area of the park (ha) (Area), green space cover within the park (Greenp), nectar plant species richness (Necpl), abundance of flowering nectar plants (Necabu) and overall plant species richness (Pl). Generalised linear models (GLMs) and redundancy discriminant analysis (RDA) were applied to relate butterfly diversity and butterfly species composition to environmental variables, respectively. Results: We recorded 3617 individuals belonging to 26 species from July to September in 2019. Parks on the city fringe had significantly higher butterfly diversity. Butterfly species richness was mostly related to total plant richness. The abundance of flowering nectar plants was closely linked to butterfly abundance. Land cover had little impact on butterfly diversity and community structure in urban parks. Conclusions: Once a park has sufficient plants and nectar resources, it becomes a useful haven for urban butterflies, regardless of the surrounding land cover.
