We determine the spectroscopic properties of ~1000 ostensibly star-forming galaxies at redshifts (z=4-10) using prism spectroscopy from JWST/NIRSpec. With rest-wavelength coverage between Lya and [S II] in the optical, we stack spectra as a function of nebular conditions, and compare UV spectral properties with stellar age. This reveals UV lines of N III], N IV], C III], C IV, He II, and O III] in the average high-z galaxy. All UV lines are more intense in younger starbursts. We measure electron temperatures from the collisionally excited [O III] line ratios, finding Te=18000-22000 K for the O++ regions. We also detect a significant nebular Balmer Jump from which we estimate only Te=8000-13000 K. Accounting for typical temperature offsets between zones bearing doubly and singly ionized oxygen, these two temperatures remain discrepant by around 40%. We use the [O III] temperatures to estimate abundances of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. We find that log(C/O) is consistently ~-1, with no evolution of C/O with metallicity or stellar age. The average spectra are mildly enhanced in Nitrogen, with higher N/O than low-z starbursts, but are less enhanced than samples of high-z galaxies with visible UV N III] and N IV]. Whatever processes produce the N-enhancement in the individual galaxies must also be ongoing, at lower levels, in the median galaxy in the early Universe. The strongest starbursts are a source of significant ionizing emission: ionizing photon production efficiencies reach 10^25.7 Hz/erg, and show multiple signatures of high Lyman continuum escape, including Mg II escape fractions nearing 100%, significant deficits in [S II] emission, high degrees of ionization, and blue UV colors., Comment: Submitted to the ApJ. 23 pages, 10 figures, 8 tables, 8 authors, 7 sections, ~3MB, one world. In altermagnets, time-reversal symmetry breaking spin-polarizes electronic states, while total magnetization remains zero. In addition, at altermagnetic surfaces Rashba-spin orbit coupling is activated due to broken inversion symmetry, introducing a competing spin-momentum locking interaction. Here we show that their interplay leads to the formation of complex, chiral spin textures that offer novel, non-linear spin-to-charge conversion properties. Whereas altermagnetic order suppresses the canonical linear in-plane Rashba-Edelstein response, we establish the presence of an anomalous transversal Edelstein effect for planar applied electric and magnetic field, or alternatively, an in-plane magnetization. Moreover the non-linear Edelstein response resulting purely from electric fields also triggers the anomalous out-of-plane magnetization. We determine the anomalous response with a model based on the ab-initio electronic structure of RuO$_2$ bilayers, ultimately opening experimental avenues to explore spin-charge conversion phenomena at altermagnetic interfaces., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures

Non-Abelian Thouless pumping intertwines adiabatic quantum control and topological quantum transport and it holds potential for quantum metrology and computing. In this work, we introduce a ladder model featuring two doubly-degenerate bands and we show that adiabatic manipulation of the lattice parameters results in non-Abelian Thouless pumping, inducing both the displacement of an initially localized state and a geometric unitary transformation within the degenerate subspace. Additionally, we show that the structure and symmetry of the ladder model can be understood through its connection to a Yang monopole model. The proposed Hamiltonian can be realized using cold atoms in optical lattices, enabling the experimental demonstration of non-Abelian Thouless pumping in a genuinely quantum many-body system.

We theoretically discuss the emergence of fractional Shapiro steps in a Josephson junction created by confining a two-dimensional electron gas at an oxide interface. This phenomenon is induced by an alternating current of proper amplitude and frequency and can be tuned by a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the Rashba spin-orbit axis. The presence of fractional Shapiro steps can be associated with the creation of Majorana bound states at the boundaries of the superconducting leads. Our findings represent a route for the identification of topological superconductivity in non-centrosymmetric materials and confined systems in the presence of spin--orbit interaction, offering also new insights into recently explored frameworks., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

In two-dimensional electron systems (2DES) the breaking of the inversion, time-reversal and bulk crystal-field symmetries is interlaced with the effects of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) triggering exotic quantum phenomena. Here, we used epitaxial engineering to design and realize a 2DES characterized simultaneously by ferromagnetic order, large Rashba SOC and hexagonal band warping at the (111) interfaces between LaAlO$_{3}$, EuTiO$_{3}$ and SrTiO$_{3}$ insulators. The 2DES displays anomalous quantum corrections to the magneto-conductance driven by the time-reversal-symmetry breaking occurring below the magnetic transition temperature. The results are explained by the emergence of a non-trivial Berry phase and competing weak anti-localization / weak localization back-scattering of Dirac-like fermions, mimicking the phenomenology of gapped topological insulators. These findings open perspectives for the engineering of novel spin-polarized functional 2DES holding promises in spin-orbitronics and topological electronics.

The escape fraction of LyC ionizing radiation $f_{LyC}^{esc}$ is crucial for understanding reionization, yet impossible to measure at z $\gtrsim$ 5.3. Recently, studies have focused on calibrating indirect indicators of $f_{LyC}^{esc}$ at z $\sim$ 0.3, finding that Ly$\alpha$ is closely linked to it. What is still unclear is whether the LyC - Ly$\alpha$ relation evolves with redshift, and if Ly$\alpha$ is truly applicable as an $f_{LyC}^{esc}$ indicator during the reionization epoch. In this study, we investigate seven $-21 \lesssim M_{UV} \lesssim -19$ gravitationally lensed galaxies from the BELLS GALLERY survey at z $\sim$ 2.3. Our targets have rest-frame Ly$\alpha$ equivalent widths ranging from 10 \r{A} to 100 \r{A} and low dust content ($-2.5 \lesssim \beta \lesssim -1.9$), both indicative of high LyC escape. Surprisingly, direct estimates of $f_{LyC}^{esc}$ using Hubble Space Telescope imaging with F275W and F225W reveal that our targets are not LyC emitters, with absolute $f_{LyC}^{esc}$ $\lesssim$ 6.5% at 3$\sigma$ significance (with two sources having absolute $f_{LyC}^{esc}$(3$\sigma$) $\lesssim$ 10% and $\lesssim$ 16%). The low $f_{LyC}^{esc}$, coupled with the high Ly$\alpha$ escape fraction and equivalent width could potentially be attributed to the redshift evolution of the neutral hydrogen column density and dust content. The superconducting diode effect, reminiscent of the unidirectional charge transport in semiconductor diodes, is characterized by a nonreciprocal, dissipationless flow of Cooper pairs. This remarkable phenomenon arises from the interplay between symmetry constraints and the inherent quantum behavior of superconductors. Here, we explore the geometric control of the diode effect in a kinked nanostrip Josephson junction based on a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEGs) with Rashba spin-orbit interaction. We provide a comprehensive analysis of the diode effect as a function of the kink angle and the out-of-plane magnetic field. Our analysis reveals a rich phase diagram, showcasing a geometry and field-controlled diode effect. The phase diagram also reveals the presence of an anomalous Josephson effect related to the emergence of trivial zero-energy Andreev bound states, which can evolve into Majorana bound states. Our findings indicate that the exceptional synergy between geometric control of the diode effect and topological phases can be effectively leveraged to design and optimize superconducting devices with tailored transport properties., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Data show that the presence of women in quantum science is affected by a number of detriments and their percentage decreases even further for higher positions. Beyond data, from our shared personal experiences as female tenured quantum physics professors, we believe that the current model of scientific leadership, funding, and authority fails to represent many of us. It is time for a real change that calls for a different kind of force and for the participation of everyone. Women for quantum calls for a joint effort and aims with this initiative to contribute to such a transformation.

We use bosonization, retaining band curvature terms, to analyze the Hall response of interacting bosonic and fermionic two-leg ladders threaded by a flux. We derive an explicit expression of the Hall imbalance in a perturbative expansion in the band curvature, retaining fully the interactions. We show that the flux dependence of the Hall imbalance allows to distinguish the two phases (Meissner and Vortex) that are present for a bosonic ladder. For small magnetic field we relate the Hall resistance, both for bosonic and fermionic ladders, to the density dependence of the charge sitffness of the system in absence of flux. The spin dynamics in two electron double quantum dots embedded in two dimensional electron gas at the interface between SrTiO$_3$ and LaAlO$_3$ is studied by an exact numerical solution of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation, in the context of the electric dipole spin resonance experiment. Based on the three band model of $3d$-electrons localized at Ti ions on the square lattice we analyze in details the singlet-triplet transition induced by the AC electric field, in the magnetic field range close to the avoided crossing which appears as a result of the spin-orbit coupling. Our calculations show that for symmetric double quantum dots the single photon spin-flip transitions is prohibited due to the parity symmetry and the transition can occur only by the higher order two-photon processes. For a weakly asymmetric system, when the first order singlet-triplet transitions are released due to the parity symmetry breaking, the spin-flip transition has a character of the Rabi oscillations for a low electric field amplitude. As the amplitude is increased the frequency of the transition is blueshifted (redshifted) for the magnetic field below (above) the single-triplet avoided crossing. Interestingly, for a sufficiently high magnetic field and high AC field amplitude the electric field drives the system across the avoided crossing inducing the spin-flip by the Landau-Zener-Stueckelberg-Majorana transitions with 100\% spin flip probability for a slow sweep. Finally, the optimization of the geometrical parameters of the system with respect to the time of spin-flip of its fidelity is also presented.

We investigate the breathing mode and the stability of a quantum droplet in a tightly trapped one-dimensional dipolar gas of bosonic atoms. When the droplet with a flat-top density profile is formed, the breathing mode frequency scales as the inverse of the number of atoms in the cloud. This is straightforwardly derived within a phenomenological hydrodynamical approach and confirmed using both a variational method based on a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii action functional and the sum-rule approach. We extend our analysis also to the presence of axial confinement showing the effect of the trap on the density profile and therefore on the breathing mode frequency scaling. Our analysis confirms the stability of the quantum droplet against the particles emission when the flat-top density profile is observed. We investigate the energy spectrum of a single and two electron quantum dot (QD) embedded in two dimensional electron gas at the interface between SrTiO$_3$ and LaAlO$_3$, in the presence of the external magnetic field. For this purpose the three band model of $3d$-electrons defined on the square lattice of Ti ions was utilized. We demonstrate that, for the weak parabolic confinement potential, the low energy spectrum is sufficiently well described by the effective Hamiltonian reduced to the one $d_{xy}$ orbital with the spin-orbit interaction originating from the coupling to the $d_{xz}$, $d_{yz}$ bands. This is not the case for stronger confinement where contribution of the states related to the $d_{xz/yz}$ orbital is relevant. Based on the time depended calculations we discuss in details the manipulation of the electron spin in QD by external AC voltages, in the context of the electric dipole spin resonance. The allowed and forbidden transitions are discussed in details with respect to the parity selection rule. Our calculations show that for a single electron QD the spin-flip in the ground-state has a character of a Rabi resonance while for two electrons the singlet-triplet transition is forbidden by the parity symmetry. For the two electrons QD, we demonstrate that the spin-flip transition can still be accomplished via a second-order, two-photon process that has a two-state Rabi character for low AC field amplitude. The two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at oxide interfaces exhibits various exotic properties stemming from interfacial inversion symmetry breaking. In this work, we report the emergence of large nonlinear Hall effects (NHE) in the LaAlO3/KTaO3(111) interface 2DEG under zero magnetic field. Skew scattering was identified as the dominant origin based on the cubic scaling of nonlinear Hall conductivity with longitudinal conductivity and the threefold symmetry. Moreover, a gate-tunable NHE with pronounced peak and dip was observed and reproduced by our theoretical calculation. These results indicate the presence of Berry curvature hotspots and thus a large Berry curvature triple at the oxide interface. Our theoretical calculations confirm the existence of large Berry curvatures from the avoided crossing of multiple 5d-orbit bands, orders of magnitude larger than that in transition-metal dichalcogenides. NHE offers a new pathway to probe the Berry curvature at oxide interfaces, and facilitates new applications in oxide nonlinear electronics.

X-ray dark-field imaging creates a representation of the sample where contrast is generated by subresolution features within the volume under inspection. These are detected by a local measurement of the radiation field's angular distribution, and how it is affected by the interaction with matter. X-ray dark-field imaging typically requires taking multiple exposures for separating the contributions to the detected X-ray intensity arising from scattering, refraction and attenuation; a procedure often called phase retrieval. We propose an approach to retrieve an X-ray dark-field image from a single X-ray shot. We demonstrate the method using a laboratory-based, rotating anode X-ray tube system without the need for coherent radiation or a high-resolution detector. This reduces the complexity of data acquisition, enabling faster scanning and increasing dose efficiency. Moreover, our approach reduces the problem dimensionality by one, with substantial implications for data-intensive applications like tomography. The model assumes a homogeneous material, and we show this is a valid hypothesis for soft biological tissues by reconstructing dark-field tomography images from data sets containing a single shot per view. We theoretically study the quasiparticle current behaviour of a thermally-biased bipolar thermoelectrical superconducting quantum interference proximity transistor, formed by a normal metal wire embedded in a superconducting ring and tunnel-coupled to a superconducting probe. In this configuration, the superconducting gap of the wire can be modified through an applied magnetic flux. We analyse the thermoelectric response as a function of magnetic flux, at fixed temperatures, in the case of a device made of the same superconductor. We demonstrate magnetically controllable, bipolar thermoelectric behaviour and discuss optimal working conditions by looking at the thermoelectric power and other figures of merit of the device., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the switching current distributions of ferromagnetic anomalous Josephson junctions subjected to a linearly increasing bias current. Our study uncovers a significant correlation between the position of the switching current distributions and crucial system parameters, such as the strength of the spin-orbit coupling and the Gilbert damping parameter. This indicates that these parameters can be directly determined through experimental measurements. By conducting a comprehensive analysis of the interplay among noise, magnetization, phase dynamics, and the statistical properties of the switching current distribution, we deepen our understanding of these intriguing cryogenic spintronics devices. We provide one of the most comprehensive metallicity studies at z $\sim$ 4 by analyzing the UV/optical HST photometry, and rest-frame VLT-FORS2 ultraviolet and VLT-XSHOOTER optical spectra of J0332-3557, a gravitationally lensed galaxy magnified by a factor of 20. With a 5$\sigma$ detection of the auroral O III]1666 line, we are able to derive a direct gas metallicity estimate for our target. We find Z_gas = 12 + log(O/H) = 8.26 $\pm$ 0.06, which is compatible with an increasing of both the gas fraction and the outflow metal loading factor from z $\sim$ 0 to z $\sim$ 4. J0332-3557 is the most metal-rich individual galaxy at z $\sim$ 4 for which the C/O ratio has been measured. We derive a low log(C/O) = - 1.02 $\pm$ 0.2, which suggests that J0332-3557 is in the early stages of ISM carbon enrichment driven mostly by massive stars. The low C/O abundance also indicates that J0332-3557 is characterized by a low star formation efficiency, higher yields of oxygen, and longer burst duration. We find that EW(C III])1906,9 is as low as $\sim$ 3 \AA. The main drivers of the low EW(C III])1906,9 are the higher gas metallicity and the low C/O abundance. J0332-3557 is characterized by one diffuse and two more compact regions $\sim$ 1 kpc in size. We find that the carbon emission mostly originates in the compact knots. Our study on J0332-3557 serves as an anchor for studies investigating the evolution of metallicity and C/O abundance across different redshifts., Comment: 27 pages, 17 figures. Thermoelectrical properties are frequently used to characterize the materials and endow the free energy from wasted heat for useful purposes. Here, we show that linear thermoelectric effects in tunnel junctions with Fe-based superconductors, not only address the dominance between particle and hole states, but even provide information about the superconducting order parameter symmetry. In particular, we observe that nodal order parameters present a maximal thermoelectric effect at lower temperatures than for nodeless cases. Furthermore, we show also that superconducting tunnel junctions between Fe-based and BCS superconductors could provide a thermoelectric efficiency ZT exceeding 6 with a linear Seebeck coefficient around $S\approx 800\;\mu\text{V/K}$ at a few Kelvin. A tight binding supercell approach is used for the calculation of the electronic structure of the (111) LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface. The confinement potential at the interface is evaluated solving a discrete Poisson equation by means of an iterative method. In addition to the effect of the confinement, local Hubbard electron-electron terms are included at mean-field level within a fully self-consistent procedure. The calculation carefully describes how the two-dimensional electron gas arises from the quantum confinement of electrons near the interface due to band bending potential. The resulting electronic sub-bands and Fermi surfaces show full agreement with the electronic structure determined by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. In particular, it is analyzed how the effect of local Hubbard interactions changes the density distribution over the layers from the interface to the bulk. Interestingly, the two-dimensional electron gas at interface is not depleted by local Hubbard interactions which indeed induce an enhancement of the electron density between the first layers and the bulk., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

We study a gas of bosonic dipolar atoms in the presence of a transverse harmonic trapping potential by using an improved variational Bethe ansatz, which includes the transverse width of the atomic cloud as a variational parameter. Our calculations show that the system behavior evolves from quasi-one dimensional to a strictly one-dimensional one by changing the atom-atom interaction, or the axial density, or the frequency of the transverse confinement. We investigate the robustness of topological superconductors under the perturbing influence of a finite charge current. To this aim, we introduce a modified Kitaev Hamiltonian parametrically dependent on the quasiparticle momentum induced by the current. Using different quantifiers of the topological phase, such as the Majorana polarization and the edge state quantum conditional mutual information, we prove the existence of a finite critical value of the quasiparticle momentum below which edge modes and topological superconductivity survive. We also discuss how a finite current breaks time reversal symmetry and changes the topological class in the Altland-Zirnbauer classification scheme compared to the case of isolated systems. We investigate the topological properties of a Josephson junction obtained by constraining a two-dimensional electron gas at oxide interface to form a quasi-1D conductor. We reveal an anomalous critical current behaviour with a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the Rashba spin-orbit one. We relate the observed critical current enhancement at small magnetic fields with a non-trivial topology, accompanied by Majorana bound states (MBSs) pinned at the edges of the superconducting leads. Signatures of MBSs also include a sawtooth profile in the current-phase relation. Our findings allow to recognize fingerprints of topological superconductivity in non-centrosymmetric materials and confined systems with Rashba spin-orbit interaction, and to explain recent experimental observations for which a microscopic description is still lacking., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, paper

Thouless pumping provides one of the simplest manifestations of topology in quantum systems, and has attracted a lot of recent interest, both theoretically and experimentally. Since the seminal works by Thouless and Niu in 1983 and 1984, it is argued that the quantization of the pumped charge is robust against weak disorder, but a clear characterization of the localization properties of the relevant states, and the breakdown of quantized transport in the presence of interaction or out of the adiabatic approximation, has been long debated. Thouless pumping is also the first example of a topological phase emerging in a periodically-driven system. Driven systems can exhibit exotic topological phases without any static analogue and have been the subject of many recent proposals both in fermionic and bosonic systems in diverse platforms ranging from cold atoms to photonics and condensed matter systems. In this respect, this review has a twofold purpose: On the one hand, it serves as a basis to understand the robustness of the topology of slowly-driven systems per se; On the other hand, it highlights the rich properties of topological pumps and their diverse range of applications, for instance, in systems with synthetic dimensions or for understanding higher-order topological phases. Squashed entanglement and its universal upper bound, the quantum conditional mutual information, are faithful measures of bipartite quantum correlations defined in terms of multipartitions. As such, they are sensitive to the fine-grain structure of quantum systems. Building on this observation, we introduce the concept of quantum conditional mutual information between the edges of quantum many-body systems. We show that this quantity characterizes unambiguously one-dimensional topological insulators and superconductors, being equal to Bell-state entanglement in the former and to half Bell-state entanglement in the latter, mirroring the different statistics of the edge modes in the two systems. The edge-to-edge quantum conditional mutual information is robust in the presence of disorder or local perturbations, converges exponentially with the system size to a quantized topological invariant, even in the presence of interactions, and vanishes in the trivial phase. We thus conjecture that it coincides with the edge-to-edge squashed entanglement in the entire ground-state phase diagram of symmetry-protected topological systems, and we provide some analytical evidence supporting the claim. By comparing them with the entanglement negativity, we collect further indications that the quantum conditional mutual information and the squashed entanglement provide a very accurate characterization of nonlocal correlation patterns in one-dimensional quantum matter., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, revised and expanded version

Converting charge current into spin current is one of the main mechanisms exploited in spintronics. One prominent example is the Edelstein effect, namely the generation of a magnetization in response to an external electric field, which can be realized in systems with lack of inversion symmetry. If a system has electrons with an orbital angular momentum character, an orbital magnetization can be generated by the applied electric field giving rise to the so-called orbital Edelstein effect. Oxide heterostructures are the ideal platform for these effects due to the strong spin-orbit coupling and the lack of inversion symmetries. Beyond a gate-tunable spin Edelstein effect, we predict an orbital Edelstein effect an order of magnitude larger then the spin one at the (111) LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface. We model the material as a bilayer of $t_{2g}$ orbitals using a tight-binding approach, while transport properties are obtained in the Boltzmann approach. We give an effective model at low filling which explains the non-trivial behaviour of the Edelstein response, showing that the hybridization between the electronic bands crucially impacts the Edelstein susceptibility., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We study a quantum many-body variant of the parametric oscillator, by investigating the driven sine-Gordon model with a modulated tunnel coupling via a semi-classical Truncated Wigner Approximation (TWA). We first analyze the parametric resonant regime for driving protocols that retain our model gapped, and compare the TWA to a Time-Dependent Gaussian Variational Ansatz (TGVA). We then turn to a drive which closes the gap, resulting in an enhanced energy absorption. While the TGVA approach breaks down in this regime, we can apply TWA to explore the dynamics of the mode-resolved energy density, and the higher-order correlations between modes in the prethermal heating regime. For weak driving amplitude, we find an exponentially fast energy absorption in the main resonant mode, while the heating of all remaining modes is almost perfectly suppressed on short time scales. At later times, the highly excited main resonance provides effective resonant driving terms for its higher harmonics through the non-linearities in the Hamiltonian, and gives rise to an exponentially fast heating in these particular modes. We capture the strong correlations induced by these resonant processes by evaluating higher order connected correlation functions.
