5. Nitrile Electrolyte Strategy for 4.9 V‐Class Lithium‐Metal Batteries Operating in Flame.

Abstract

Challenges facing high‐voltage/high‐capacity cathodes, in addition to the longstanding problems pertinent to lithium (Li)‐metal anodes, should be addressed to develop high‐energy‐density Li‐metal batteries. This issue mostly stems from interfacial instability between electrodes and electrolytes. Conventional carbonate‐ or ether‐based liquid electrolytes suffer from not only volatility and flammability but also limited electrochemical stability window. Here, we report a nitrile electrolyte strategy based on concentrated nitrile electrolytes (CNEs) with co‐additives. The CNE consists of high‐concentration lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) in a solvent mixture of succinonitrile (SN)/acetonitrile (AN). The SN/AN solvent mixture is designed to ensure high oxidation stability along with thermal stability, which are prerequisites for high‐voltage Li‐metal cells. The CNE exhibits interfacial stability with Li metals due to the coordinated solvation structure. Lithium nitrate (LiNO3) and indium fluoride (InF3) are incorporated in the CNE as synergistic co‐additives to further stabilize solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li metals. The resulting electrolyte (CNE + LiNO3/InF3) enables stable cycling performance in Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1 and 4.9 V‐class Li||LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cells. Notably, the Li||LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cell maintains its electrochemical activity at high temperature (100 °C) and even in flame without fire or explosion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

25. Climate Change Adaptation via U.S. Land Use Transitions: A Spatial Econometric Analysis

Abstract

Climate change, coupled with biofuels development and other factors may well be changing US land usage patterns. We use a spatial econometric approach to estimate the drivers of US land use transitions in recent years. We consider transitions between six major land uses: agricultural land, forest, grassland, water, urban, and other uses. To examine drivers, we use a two-step linearized, spatial, multinomial logit model and estimate land use transition probabilities. Our results indicate that climate change is a driver of land use change and that movements to and from agricultural land and grassland exhibit opposite responses with climate change portending a movement out of cropland into grassland. These results indicate that adaptation to climate change through land usage change is ongoing but with spatial dependence.

Abstract

A feasibility study on nuclear core design of soluble boron free (SBF) core for small size (150MWth) small modular reactor (SMR) was investigated. The purpose of this study was to design a once through cycle SMR core, where it can be used to supply electricity to a remote isolated area. PWR fuel assembly design with 17×17 arrangement, with 264 fuel rods per assembly was adopted as the basis design. The computer code CASMO-3/MASTER was used for the search of SBF core and fuel assembly analysis for SMR design. A low critical boron concentration (CBC) below 200 ppm core with 4.7 years once through cycle length was achieved using 57 fuel assemblies having 170 cm of active height. Core reactivity controlled using mainly 512 number of 4 wt% and 960 12 wt% Gd rods.

42. Bendable and thin sulfide solid electrolyte film: a new electrolyte opportunity for free-standing and stackable high-energy all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract

Bulk-type all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASLBs) are considered a promising candidate to outperform the conventional lithium-ion batteries. Unfortunately, the current technology level of ASLBs is in a stage of infancy in terms of cell-based (not electrode-material-based) energy densities and scalable fabrication. Here, we report on the first ever bendable and thin sulfide solid electrolyte films reinforced with a mechanically compliant poly(paraphenylene terephthalamide) nonwoven (NW) scaffold, which enables the fabrication of free-standing and stackable ASLBs with high energy density and high rate capabilities. The ASLB, using a thin (∼70 μm) NW-reinforced SE film, exhibits a 3-fold increase of the cell-energy-density compared to that of a conventional cell without the NW scaffold.

43. Heterolayered, one-dimensional nanobuilding block mat batteries.

Abstract

The rapidly approaching smart/wearable energy era necessitates advanced rechargeable power sources with reliable electrochemical properties and versatile form factors. Here, as a unique and promising energy storage system to address this issue, we demonstrate a new class of heterolayered, one-dimensional (1D) nanobuilding block mat (h-nanomat) battery based on unitized separator/electrode assembly (SEA) architecture. The unitized SEAs consist of wood cellulose nanofibril (CNF) separator membranes and metallic current collector-/polymeric binder-free electrodes comprising solely single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT)-netted electrode active materials (LiFePO4 (cathode) and Li4Ti5O12 (anode) powders are chosen as model systems to explore the proof of concept for h-nanomat batteries). The nanoporous CNF separator plays a critical role in securing the tightly interlocked electrode-separator interface. The SWNTs in the SEAs exhibit multifunctional roles as electron conductive additives, binders, current collectors and also non-Faradaic active materials. This structural/physicochemical uniqueness of the SEAs allows significant improvements in the mass loading of electrode active materials, electron transport pathways, electrolyte accessibility and misalignment-proof of separator/electrode interface. As a result, the h-nanomat batteries, which are easily fabricated by stacking anode SEA and cathode SEA, provide unprecedented advances in the electrochemical performance, shape flexibility and safety tolerance far beyond those achievable with conventional battery technologies. We anticipate that the h-nanomat batteries will open 1D nanobuilding block-driven new architectural design/opportunity for development of next-generation energy storage systems.
