Search

Dual Active Galactic Nuclei (dual AGNs), a phase in some galaxy mergers during which both central supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are active, are expected to be a key observable stage leading up to SMBH mergers. Constraining the population of dual AGNs in both the nearby and high-z universe has proven to be elusive until very recently. We present a multi-wavelength follow-up campaign to confirm the nature of a sample of 20 candidate dual AGNs at cosmic noon (z~2) from the VODKA sample. Through a combination of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Very Large Array (VLA) imaging, we refute the possibility of gravitational lensing in all but one target. We find evidence of dual AGNs in four systems, while seven exhibit single AGN in galaxy pairs, either through strong radio emission or ancillary emission line data. The remaining systems are either confirmed as quasar-star superpositions (six) or non-lensed pairs (two) that require further investigations to establish AGN activity. Among the systems with radio detections, we find a variety of radio spectral slopes and UV/optical colors suggesting that our sample contains a range of AGN properties, from obscured radio-quiet objects to those with powerful synchrotron-emitting jets. This study presents one of the largest dedicated multi-wavelength follow-up campaigns to date searching for dual AGNs at high redshift. We present Gemini/GMOS and HST/STIS optical spectra for 27 dual quasar candidates selected based on their variability-induced astrometric noise or double detections in Gaia (the VODKA project). From this follow-up, we spectroscopically identify 10 star superpositions and 8 dual/lensed quasars. Among the remaining targets, 2 are likely dual/lensed quasars based on additional radio imaging, while the rest are quasars with unknown companions. Notably, WISE J1649+0812 is a newly confirmed dual quasar with a projected separation of 5 kpc at $z=1.39$ and a significant velocity offset of 183$\pm$76 km/s, highlighting the utility of narrow emission lines in identifying genuine dual quasars. Without prior photometric or spectroscopic selection, we find the star contamination rate to be 37-63%, while the dual/lensed quasar fraction is $\gtrsim$ 30% in the follow-up VODKA sample. However, when combined with existing unresolved spectra and spatially-resolved two-band color cuts, the dual/lensed quasar fraction can be increased to $\gtrsim$ 67%. We present JWST MIRI/NIRSpec observations of the extremely red quasar SDSS J165202.64+172852.3 at z~3, one of the most luminous quasars known to date, driving powerful outflows and hosting a clumpy starburst, amidst several interacting companions. We estimate the black hole (BH) mass of the system based on the broad H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ lines, as well as the Pa$\beta$ emission in the IR and MgII in the UV. We recover a very broad range of mass estimates, with constraints ranging between log $M_{\rm BH}$=9 and 10.1, which is exacerbated if imposing a uniform BLR geometry at all wavelengths. Several factors may contribute to the large spread: measurement uncertainties (insufficient sensitivity to detect the broadest component of the faint Pa$\beta$ line, spectral blending, ambiguities in the broad/narrow component distinction), lack of virial equilibrium (in a system characterised by powerful outflows and rapid accretion), and uncertainties on the luminosity-inferred size of the broad line region, a.o. given central dust obscuration. We constrain the stellar mass via SED fitting, suggesting the host to be extremely massive at $10^{12.8\pm 0.5} M_\odot$ - ~2 dex above the characteristic mass of the Schechter fit to the z=3 stellar mass function. Notably, J1652's central BH might be interpreted as being either undermassive, overmassive, or in line with the BH mass-stellar mass relation, depending on the choice of assumptions. The recovered Eddington ratio varies accordingly, but exceeds 10% in any case. We put our results into context by providing an extensive overview and discussion of recent literature results and their associated assumptions. The search for dual supermassive black holes (SMBHs) is of immense interest in modern astrophysics. Galaxy mergers may be an important route to fuel and to produce SMBH pairs. Actively accreting SMBH pairs can be observed as a dual quasar, which are vital probes of SMBH growth. Gaia observations have enabled a novel technique to systematically search for such dual quasars at previously unreachable sub-kpc scales, based on the small jitters of the light centroid as the two quasars vary stochastically. Here we present the first detailed study of a 0.46'', 3.8 kpc separation, VODKA-selected dual quasar, J0749+2255, at $z=2.17$ using JWST/NIRSpec integral field unit spectroscopy. This is one of the most distant, small separation dual quasars identified today. Dual quasars at cosmic noon are not well characterized. We detect the faint ionized gas of the host galaxy, best traced by the narrow \ha\ emission. Line ratio diagnostics show a mix of ionization from the two quasars and intense star formation. The spatially-resolved spectra of the two quasars suggest that they have very similar black hole properties (two $M_{BH}\sim 10^9\ \textrm{M}_{\odot}$ with large Eddington ratio reaching $L/L_{Edd}\sim0.2$) hinting at the possible synchronized growth and accretion from the same gas supply. Surprisingly, the ionized gas kinematics suggest an extended, rotating disk rather than a disturbed system that would be expected in a major gas-rich galaxy merger. While it is unclear if J0749+2255 is representative of the dual quasar evolution, the observations with JWST revealed a major puzzle. Dual quasars, two active supermassive black holes at galactic scales, represent crucial objects for studying the impact of galaxy mergers and quasar activity on the star formation rate (SFR) within their host galaxies, particularly at cosmic noon when SFR peaks. We present JWST/MIRI mid-infrared integral field spectroscopy of J074922.96+225511.7, a dual quasar with a projected separation of 3.8 kilo-parsec at a redshift $z$ of 2.17. We detect spatially extended [Fe II] 5.34$\rm \mu$m and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) 3.3$\mu$m emissions from the star formation activity in its host galaxy. We derive the SFR of 10$^{3.0\pm0.2}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ using PAH 3.3$\mu$m, which is five times higher than that derived from the cutoff luminosity of the infrared luminosity function for galaxies at $z\sim2$. While the SFR of J0749+2255 agrees with that of star-forming galaxies of comparable stellar mass at the same redshifts, its molecular gas content falls short of expectations based on the molecular Kennicutt-Schmidt law. This discrepancy may result from molecular gas depletion due to the longer elevated stage of star formation, even after the molecular gas reservoir is depleted. We do not observe any quasar-driven outflow that impacts PAH and [Fe II] in the host galaxy based on the spatially resolved maps. From the expected flux in PAH-based star formation, the [Fe II] line likely originates from the star-forming regions in the host galaxy. High-quality Extragalactic Legacy-field Monitoring (HELM) is a long-term observing program that photometrically monitors several well-studied extragalactic legacy fields with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) imager on the CTIO 4m Blanco telescope. Since Feb 2019, HELM has been monitoring regions within COSMOS, XMM-LSS, CDF-S, S-CVZ, ELAIS-S1, and SDSS Stripe 82 with few-day cadences in the $(u)gri(z)$ bands, over a collective sky area of $\sim 38$ deg${\rm ^2}$. The main science goal of HELM is to provide high-quality optical light curves for a large sample of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and to build decades-long time baselines when combining past and future optical light curves in these legacy fields. These optical images and light curves will facilitate the measurements of AGN reverberation mapping lags, as well as studies of AGN variability and its dependences on accretion properties. In addition, the time-resolved and coadded DECam photometry will enable a broad range of science applications from galaxy evolution to time-domain science. We describe the design and implementation of the program and present the first data release that includes source catalogs and the first $\sim 3.5$ years of light curves during 2019A--2022A., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, submitted to ApJS. We study dual AGN host galaxy morphologies at $z=2$ using the ASTRID simulation, selecting black hole (BH) pairs with small separation ($\Delta r<30\rm{kpc}$), high mass ($M_{\text{BH,12}}>10^7M_\odot$), and luminosity ($L_{\text{bol,12}}>10^{43}\rm{erg/s}$). We kinematically decompose (using MORDOR) $\sim1000$ dual AGN hosts into standard components - a `disk' (thin and thick disk, pseudo-bulge) and 'bulge' (bulge and halo) and define disk-dominated galaxies by the disk-to-total $D/T\geq0.5$. In ASTRID, $60.9\pm2.1\%$ of dual AGN hosts (independent of separation) are disk-dominated, with the $D/T$ distribution peaking at $\sim0.7$. Notably, hosts of BH pairs have similar morphologies (most either both disk or bulge-dominated). In dual-AGN hosts, the $D/T$ increases from $\sim17\% $ at $M_{\rm *}\sim 10^{9} M_{\odot}$ to $ 64\% $ for $M_{\rm *} \sim 10^{11.5} M_{\odot}$, and the pseudo-bulge is the dominant component of the disk fraction at the high mass end. Moreover, dual AGN hosts exhibit a higher fraction of disk/large pseudo-bulge than single-AGN hosts. The Disk-to-Total ratio is approximately constant with BH mass or AGN luminosity. We also create mock images of dual AGN host galaxies, employing morphological fitting software Statmorph to calculate morphological parameters and compare them with our kinematic decomposition results. Around $83.3\pm2.4\%$ of galaxies display disk-like profiles, of which $\sim60.7\pm2.2\%$ are kinematically confirmed as disks. Se\'rsic indices and half-mass radii of dual AGN host galaxies align with observational measurements from HST at $z\sim2$. Around $34\%$ are identified as mergers from the $\text{Gini}-M_{20}$ relation. We find two dual AGN hosted by galaxies that exhibit disk-like se\'rsic index $n_{12}<1$ and $(D/T)_{12}>0.5$, which are in remarkable agreement with properties of recently discovered dual quasars in disk galaxies at $z\sim 2$., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, submitted to the Open Journal of Astrophysics

Lightcurves of many classical novae deviate from the canonical "fast rise - smooth decline" pattern and display complex variability behavior. We present the first TESS-space-photometry-based investigation of this phenomenon. We use TESS Sector 41 full-frame images to extract a lightcurve of the slow Galactic nova V606 Vul that erupted nine days prior to the start of the TESS observations. The lightcurve covers the first of two major peaks of V606 Vul that was reached 19 days after the start of the eruption. The nova reached its brightest visual magnitude V=9.9 in its second peak 64 days after the eruption onset, following the completion of Sector 41 observations. To increase the confidence level of the extracted lightcurve, we performed the analysis using four different codes implementing the aperture photometry (Lightkurve, VaST) and image subtraction (TESSreduce, tequila_shots) and find good agreement between them. We performed ground-based photometric and spectroscopic monitoring to complement the TESS data. The TESS lightcurve reveals two features: periodic variations (0.12771d, 0.01mag average peak-to-peak amplitude) that disappeared when the source was within 1mag of peak optical brightness and a series of isolated mini-flares (with peak-to-peak amplitudes of up to 0.5mag) appearing at seemingly random times. We interpret the periodic variations as the result of azimuthal asymmetry of the photosphere engulfing the nova-hosting binary that was distorted by and rotating with the binary. Dual and off-nucleus active supermassive black holes are expected to be common in the hierarchical structure formation paradigm, but their identification at parsec scales remains a challenge due to strict angular resolution requirements. We conduct a systematic study using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) to examine 23 radio-bright candidate dual and off-nucleus quasars. The targets are selected by a novel astrometric technique ("varstrometry") from Gaia, aiming to identify dual or off-nucleus quasars at (sub)kilo-parsec scales. Among these quasars, 8 exhibit either multiple radio components or significant (>3$\sigma$) positional offsets between the VLBA and Gaia positions. The radio emission from the three candidates which exhibit multiple radio components is likely to originate from small-scale jets based on their morphology. Among the remaining five candidates with significant VLBA-Gaia offsets, three are identified as potential dual quasars at parsec scales, one is likely attributed to small-scale jets, and the origin of the last candidate remains unclear. We explore alternative explanations for the observed VLBA-Gaia offsets. We find no evidence for optical jets at kilo-parsec scales, nor any contamination to Gaia astrometric noise from the host galaxy; misaligned coordinate systems are unlikely to account for our offsets. Our study highlights the promise of the varstrometry technique in discovering candidate dual or off-nucleus quasars and emphasizes the need for further confirmation and investigation to validate and understand these intriguing candidates., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, accepted to ApJ

The hierarchical structure formation paradigm predicts the formation of pairs of supermassive black holes in merging galaxies. When both (or one) members of the SMBH pair are unobscured AGNs, the system can be identified as a dual (or offset) AGN. Quantifying the abundance of these AGN pairs as functions of separation, redshift and host properties is crucial to understanding SMBH formation and AGN fueling in the broad context of galaxy formation. The High Latitude Wide Area Survey with Roman, with its unprecedented combination of sensitivity, spatial resolution, area and NIR wavelength coverage, will revolutionize the study of galactic-scale environments of SMBH pairs. We report Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) deep IR (F160W) imaging of SDSS J1608+2716. This system, located at a redshift of z=2.575, was recently reported as a triple quasar candidate with subarcsecond separations ($\sim0.25''$) based on selection from Gaia astrometry and follow-up Keck adaptive optics-assisted integral field unit spectroscopy. Our new HST deep IR imaging reveals the presence of a fourth point-like component located $\sim0.9''$ away from the triple system. Additionally, we detect an edge-on disk galaxy located in between the four point sources. The entire system exhibits a characteristic cusp structure in the context of strong gravitational lensing, and the observed image configuration can be successfully reproduced using a lens model based on a singular isothermal ellipsoid mass profile. These findings indicate that this system is a quadruply lensed quasar. Our results highlight the challenges associated with identifying dual/multiple quasars on $\sim$kpc scales at high redshifts, and emphasize the crucial role of deep, high-resolution IR imaging in robustly confirming such systems., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted by ApJL

Dual quasars at small physical separations are an important precursor phase of galaxy mergers, ultimately leading to the coalescence of the two supermassive black holes. Starting from a sample of dual/lensed quasar candidates discovered using astrometric jitter in Gaia data, we present a pilot case study of one of the most promising yet puzzling candidate dual quasars at cosmic noon (z$\sim$1.8). Using multi-wavelength imaging and spectroscopy from X-ray to radio, we test whether the J0823+2418 system is two individual quasars in a bound pair at separation$\sim$0.64'', or instead a single quasar being gravitationally lensed by a foreground galaxy. We find consistent flux ratios ($\sim$1.25-1.45) between the two sources in optical, NIR, UV, and radio, and thus similar spectral energy distributions, suggesting a strong lensing scenario. However, differences in the radio spectral index, as well as changing X-ray fluxes, hint at either a dual quasar with otherwise nearly identical properties, or perhaps lensing-based time lag of $\sim$3 days paired with intrinsic variability. We find with lens mass modeling that the relative NIR positions and magnitudes of the two quasars and a marginally detected central galaxy are consistent with strong lensing. Archival SDSS spectra likewise suggest a foreground absorber via Mg II absorption lines. We conclude that J0823+2418 is likely a lensed quasar, and therefore that the VODKA sample contains a population of these lensed systems (perhaps as high as 50%) as well as dual quasars., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures, submitted to ApJ

Galaxy mergers produce pairs of supermassive black holes (SMBHs), which may be witnessed as dual quasars if both SMBHs are rapidly accreting. The kiloparsec (kpc)-scale separation represents a physical regime sufficiently close for merger-induced effects to be important yet wide enough to be directly resolvable with the facilities currently available. Whereas many kpc-scale dual active galactic nuclei--the low-luminosity counterparts of quasars--have been observed in low-redshift mergers, no unambiguous dual quasar is known at cosmic noon ($z\approx2$), the peak of global star formation and quasar activity. Here we report multiwavelength observations of SDSS J0749+2255 as a kpc-scale, dual-quasar system hosted by a galaxy merger at cosmic noon ($z=2.17$). We discover extended host galaxies associated with the much brighter compact quasar nuclei (separated by 0.46" or 3.8 kpc) and low-surface-brightness tidal features as evidence for galactic interactions. Unlike its low-redshift and low-luminosity counterparts, SDSS J0749+2255 is hosted by massive compact disk-dominated galaxies. The apparent lack of stellar bulges and the fact that SDSS J0749+2255 already follows the local SMBH mass--host stellar mass relation, suggest that at least some SMBHs may have formed before their host stellar bulges. The statistics of galactic-scale quasar pairs can elucidate our understanding of the dynamical evolution of supermassive black hole (SMBH) pairs, the duty cycles of quasar activity in mergers, or even the nature of dark matter, but have been challenging to measure at cosmic noon, the prime epoch of massive galaxy and SMBH formation. Here we measure a double quasar fraction of $\sim 6.2\pm0.5\times 10^{-4}$ integrated over $\sim 0.3-3$ arcsec separations (projected physical separations of $\sim 3-30\,{\rm kpc}$ at $z\sim 2$) in luminous ($L_{\rm bol}>10^{45.8}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$) unobscured quasars at $1.5

We study the optical $gri$ photometric variability of a sample of 190 quasars within the SDSS Stripe 82 region that have long-term photometric coverage during $\sim 1998-2020$ with SDSS, PanSTARRS-1, the Dark Energy Survey, and dedicated follow-up monitoring with Blanco 4m/DECam. With on average $\sim 200$ nightly epochs per quasar per filter band, we improve the parameter constraints from a Damped Random Walk (DRW) model fit to the light curves over previous studies with 10-15 yr baselines and $\lesssim 100$ epochs. We find that the average damping timescale $\tau_{\rm DRW}$ continues to rise with increased baseline, reaching a median value of $\sim 750$ days ($g$ band) in the rest-frame of these quasars using the 20-yr light curves. Some quasars may have gradual, long-term trends in their light curves, suggesting that either the DRW fit requires very long baselines to converge, or that the underlying variability is more complex than a single DRW process for these quasars. Using a subset of quasars with better-constrained $\tau_{\rm DRW}$ (less than 20\% of the baseline), we confirm a weak wavelength dependence of $\tau_{\rm DRW}\propto \lambda^{0.51\pm0.20}$. We further quantify optical variability of these quasars over days to decades timescales using structure function (SF) and power spectrum density (PSD) analyses. The SF and PSD measurements qualitatively confirm the measured (hundreds of days) damping timescales from the DRW fits. However, the ensemble PSD is steeper than that of a DRW on timescales less than $\sim$ a month for these luminous quasars, and this second break point correlates with the longer DRW damping timescale., Comment: 20 pages, 24 figures

We present a sample of 706, $z < 1.5$ active galactic nuclei (AGNs) selected from optical photometric variability in three of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) deep fields (E2, C3, and X3) over an area of 4.64 deg$^2$. We construct light curves using difference imaging aperture photometry for resolved sources and non-difference imaging PSF photometry for unresolved sources, respectively, and characterize the variability significance. Our DES light curves have a mean cadence of 7 days, a 6 year baseline, and a single-epoch imaging depth of up to $g \sim 24.5$. Using spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, we find 26 out of total 706 variable galaxies are consistent with dwarf galaxies with a reliable stellar mass estimate ($M_{\ast}<10^{9.5}\ M_\odot$; median photometric redshift of 0.9). We were able to constrain rapid characteristic variability timescales ($\sim$ weeks) using the DES light curves in 15 dwarf AGN candidates (a subset of our variable AGN candidates) at a median photometric redshift of 0.4. This rapid variability is consistent with their low black hole masses. We confirm the low-mass AGN nature of one source with a high S/N optical spectrum. We publish our catalog, optical light curves, and supplementary data, such as X-ray properties and optical spectra, when available. We measure a variable AGN fraction versus stellar mass and compare to results from a forward model. We present results on a multi-wavelength analysis of SDSS J025214.67-002813.7, a system which has been previously classified as a binary AGN candidate based on periodic signals detected in the optical light curves. We use available radio-X-ray observations of the system to investigate the true accretion nature. Analyzing new observations from XMM-Newton and NuSTAR, we characterize the X-ray emission and search for evidence of circumbinary accretion. Although the 0.5-10 keV spectrum shows evidence of an additional soft emission component, possibly due to extended emission from hot nuclear gas, we find the spectral shape consistent with a single AGN. Compiling a full multi-wavelength SED, we also search for signs of circumbinary accretion, such as a "notch" in the continuum due to the presence of minidisks. We find that the radio-optical emission agrees with the SED of a standard, radio-quiet, AGN, however there is a large deficit in emission blueward of ~1400 A. Although this deficit in emission can plausibly be attributed to a binary AGN system, we find that the SED of SDSS J0252-0028 is better explained by emission from a reddened, single AGN. However, future studies on the expected hard X-ray emission associated with binary AGN (especially in the unequal-mass regime), will allow for more rigorous analyses of the binary AGN hypothesis., Comment: Submitted to ApJ. 11 pages, 3 figures

Dual quasars are precursors of binary supermassive black holes, which are important objects for gravitational wave study, galaxy evolution, and cosmology. I report four double quasars, one of which is newly discovered, with separations of 1$-$2 arcsec selected from the DECam Legacy Survey. The Gemini optical spectra confirm that both sources are quasars at the same redshifts. J0118$-$0104 and J0932+0722 are classified as dual quasars, whereas J0037+2058 could be either a dual quasar or a lensed quasar. I estimate the physical properties such as black hole masses and Eddington ratios for the four double quasars. The newly discovered system supplements the incomplete sample of dual quasars at $\sim$10 kpc at $z>0.5$. The results demonstrate that new high-quality imaging surveys with existing spectroscopic data could reveal additional small-scale double quasars. Combined with the dual quasars from the literature, I find a power-law index of 1.45$\pm$0.48 for the distribution of dual quasars as a function of separation between 5$-$20 kpc, steeper than that expected from dynamical friction, though it is likely due to the incomplete sample at $<$15 kpc. Dual supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at $\sim$kpc scales are the progenitor population of SMBH mergers and play an important role in understanding the pairing and dynamical evolution of massive black holes in galaxy mergers. Because of the stringent resolution requirement and the apparent rareness of these small-separation pairs, there are scarce observational constraints on this population, with few confirmed dual SMBHs at $<10$kpc separations at $z>1$. Here we present results from a pilot search for kpc-scale dual quasars selected with Gaia Data release 2 (DR2) astrometry and followed up with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 dual-band (F475W and F814W) snapshot imaging. Our targets are quasars primarily selected with the varstrometry technique, i.e., light centroid jitter caused by asynchronous variability from both members in an unresolved quasar pair, supplemented by sub-arcsec pairs already resolved by Gaia DR2. We find an overall high fraction of HST-resolved pairs among the varstrometry-selected quasars (unresolved in Gaia DR2), $\sim 30-50\%$, increasing toward high redshift ($\sim 60-80\%$ at $z>1.5$). We discuss the nature of the 43 resolved sub-arcsec pairs based on HST and supplementary data. A substantial fraction ($\sim 40\%$) of these pairs are likely physical quasar pairs or gravitationally lensed quasars. We also discover a triple quasar candidate and a quadruply lensed quasar, which is among the smallest-separation quadruple lenses. Periodic quasars have been suggested as candidates for hosting binary supermassive black holes (SMBHs), although alternative scenarios remain possible to explain the optical light curve periodicity. To test the alternative hypothesis of precessing radio jet, we present deep 6 GHz radio imaging conducted with NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in its C configuration for the three candidate periodic quasars, DES J024703.24$-$010032.0, DES J024944.66$-$000036.8, and DES J025214.67$-$002813.7. Our targets were selected based on their optical variability using 20-yr long multi-color light curves from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The new VLA observations show that all three periodic quasars are radio-quiet with the radio loudness parameters measured to be $R\equiv f_{6\,{\rm cm}}/f_{{\rm 2500}}$ of $\lesssim$1.0$-$1.5 and the $k$-corrected luminosities $\nu L_\nu$[6 GHz] of $\lesssim$5$-$21 $\times$ 10$^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. They are in stark contrast to previously known periodic quasars proposed as binary SMBH candidates such as the blazar OJ 287 and PG1302$-$102. Our results rule out optical emission contributed from precessing radio jets as the origin of the optical periodicity in the three DES$-$SDSS-selected candidate periodic quasars. Galaxy mergers occur frequently in the early universe and bring multiple supermassive black holes (SMBHs) into the nucleus, where they may eventually coalesce. Identifying post-merger-scale (i.e., <~a few kpc) dual SMBHs is a critical pathway to understanding their dynamical evolution and successive mergers. While serendipitously discovering kpc-scale dual SMBHs at z<1 is possible, such systems are elusive at z>2, but critical to constraining the progenitors of SMBH mergers. The redshift z~2 also marks the epoch of peak activity of luminous quasars, hence probing this spatial regime at high redshift is of particular significance in understanding the evolution of quasars. However, given stringent resolution requirements, there is currently no confirmed <10 kpc physical SMBH pair at z>2. Here we report two sub-arcsec double quasars at z>2 discovered from a targeted search with a novel astrometric technique, demonstrating a high success rate (~50%) in this systematic approach. These high-redshift double quasars could be the long-sought kpc-scale dual SMBHs, or sub-arcsec gravitationally-lensed quasar images. One of these double quasars (at z=2.95) was spatially resolved with optical spectroscopy, and slightly favors the scenario of a physical quasar pair with a projected separation of 3.5 kpc (0.46"). Follow-up observations of double quasars discovered by this targeted approach will be able to provide the first observational constraints on kpc-scale dual SMBHs at z>2., Comment: Published in Nature Astronomy (April 2021)

We report on continued, $\sim$15 year-long, broad Balmer emission lines in three metal-poor dwarf emission-line galaxies selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopy. The persistent luminosity of the broad Balmer emission indicates the galaxies are active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with virial black hole masses of $\sim 10^{6.7}{-10^{7.0}\ M_{\odot}}$. The lack of observed hard X-ray emission and the possibility that the Balmer emission could be due to a long-lived stellar transient motivated additional follow-up spectroscopy. We also identify a previously-unreported blueshifted narrow absorption line in the broad H$\alpha$ feature in one of the AGNs, indicating an AGN-driven outflow with hydrogen column densities of order $10^{17}$ cm$^{-2}$. We also extract light curves from the Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey and the Zwicky Transient Facility. We detect probable AGN-like variability in three galaxies, further supporting the AGN scenario. This also suggests the AGNs are not strongly obscured. This sample of galaxies are among the most metal-poor which host an AGN ($Z=0.05 - 0.16\ Z_\odot$). We speculate they may be analogues to seed black holes which formed in unevolved galaxies at high redshift. Binary supermassive black holes (BSBHs) are expected to be a generic byproduct from hierarchical galaxy formation. The final coalescence of BSBHs is thought to be the loudest gravitational wave (GW) siren, yet no confirmed BSBH is known in the GW-dominated regime. While periodic quasars have been proposed as BSBH candidates, the physical origin of the periodicity has been largely uncertain. Here we report discovery of a periodicity (P=1607$\pm$7 days) at 99.95% significance (with a global p-value of ~$10^{-3}$ accounting for the look elsewhere effect) in the optical light curves of a redshift 1.53 quasar, SDSS J025214.67-002813.7. Combining archival Sloan Digital Sky Survey data with new, sensitive imaging from the Dark Energy Survey, the total ~20-yr time baseline spans ~4.6 cycles of the observed 4.4-yr (restframe 1.7-yr) periodicity. The light curves are best fit by a bursty model predicted by hydrodynamic simulations of circumbinary accretion disks. The periodicity is likely caused by accretion rate modulation by a milli-parsec BSBH emitting GWs, dynamically coupled to the circumbinary accretion disk. A bursty hydrodynamic variability model is statistically preferred over a smooth, sinusoidal model expected from relativistic Doppler boost, a kinematic effect proposed for PG1302-102. Furthermore, the frequency dependence of the variability amplitudes disfavors Doppler boost, lending independent support to the circumbinary accretion variability hypothesis. Given our detection rate of one BSBH candidate from circumbinary accretion variability out of 625 quasars, it suggests that future large, sensitive synoptic surveys such as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time may be able to detect hundreds to thousands of candidate BSBHs from circumbinary accretion with direct implications for Laser Interferometer Space Antenna., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS, 17 pages, 9 figures

Periodically variable quasars have been suggested as close binary supermassive black holes. We present a systematic search for periodic light curves in 625 spectroscopically confirmed quasars with a median redshift of 1.8 in a 4.6 deg$^2$ overlapping region of the Dark Energy Survey Supernova (DES-SN) fields and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82 (SDSS-S82). Our sample has a unique 20-year long multi-color ($griz$) light curve enabled by combining DES-SN Y6 observations with archival SDSS-S82 data. The deep imaging allows us to search for periodic light curves in less luminous quasars (down to $r{\sim}$23.5 mag) powered by less massive black holes (with masses $\gtrsim10^{8.5}M_{\odot}$) at high redshift for the first time. We find five candidates with significant (at $>$99.74% single-frequency significance in at least two bands with a global p-value of $\sim$7$\times10^{-4}$--3$\times10^{-3}$ accounting for the look-elsewhere effect) periodicity with observed periods of $\sim$3--5 years (i.e., 1--2 years in rest frame) having $\sim$4--6 cycles spanned by the observations. If all five candidates are periodically variable quasars, this translates into a detection rate of ${\sim}0.8^{+0.5}_{-0.3}$% or ${\sim}1.1^{+0.7}_{-0.5}$ quasar per deg$^2$. Our detection rate is 4--80 times larger than those found by previous searches using shallower surveys over larger areas. This discrepancy is likely caused by differences in the quasar populations probed and the survey data qualities. We discuss implications on the future direct detection of low-frequency gravitational waves. We present optical light curves from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) for the archetypical dwarf active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the nearby galaxy NGC 4395 hosting a $\sim 10^5\,M_\odot$ supermassive black hole (SMBH). Significant variability is detected on timescales from weeks to hours before reaching the background noise level. The $\sim$month-long, 30 minute-cadence, high-precision TESS light curve can be well fit by a simple damped random walk (DRW) model, with the damping timescale $\tau_{\rm DRW}$ constrained to be $2.3_{-0.7}^{+1.8}$~days ($1\sigma$). NGC 4395 lies almost exactly on the extrapolation of the $\tau_{\rm DRW}-M_{\rm BH}$ relation measured for AGNs with BH masses that are more than three orders of magnitude larger. The optical variability periodogram can be well fit by a broken power law with the high-frequency slope ($-1.88\pm0.15$) and the characteristic timescale ($\tau_{\rm br}\equiv 1/(2\pi f_{\rm br})=1.4_{-0.5}^{+1.9}\,$days) consistent with the DRW model within 1$\sigma$. This work demonstrates the power of TESS light curves in identifying low-mass accreting SMBHs with optical variability, and a potential global $\tau_{\rm DRW}-M_{\rm BH}$ relation that can be used to estimate SMBH masses with optical variability measurements., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. We report the identification of a low-mass AGN, DES J0218$-$0430, in a redshift $z = 0.823$ galaxy in the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Supernova field. We select DES J0218$-$0430 as an AGN candidate by characterizing its long-term optical variability alone based on DES optical broad-band light curves spanning over 6 years. An archival optical spectrum from the fourth phase of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey shows both broad Mg II and broad H$\beta$ lines, confirming its nature as a broad-line AGN. Archival XMM-Newton X-ray observations suggest an intrinsic hard X-ray luminosity of $L_{{\rm 2-12\,keV}}\sim7.6\pm0.4\times10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which exceeds those of the most X-ray luminous starburst galaxies, in support of an AGN driving the optical variability. Based on the broad H$\beta$ from SDSS spectrum, we estimate a virial BH mass of $M_{\bullet}\approx10^{6.43}$-$10^{6.72}M_{\odot}$ (with the error denoting 1$\sigma$ statistical uncertainties only), consistent with the estimation from OzDES, making it the lowest mass AGN with redshift $>$ 0.4 detected in optical. We estimate the host galaxy stellar mass to be $M_{\ast}\sim10^{10.5\pm0.3}M_{\odot}$ based on modeling the multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution. DES J0218$-$0430 extends the $M_{\bullet}$-$M_{\ast}$ relation observed in luminous AGNs at $z\sim1$ to masses lower than being probed by previous work. Our work demonstrates the feasibility of using optical variability to identify low-mass AGNs at higher redshift in deeper synoptic surveys with direct implications for the upcoming Legacy Survey of Space and Time at Vera C. We apply a new deep learning technique to detect, classify, and deblend sources in multi-band astronomical images. We train and evaluate the performance of an artificial neural network built on the Mask R-CNN image processing framework, a general code for efficient object detection, classification, and instance segmentation. After evaluating the performance of our network against simulated ground truth images for star and galaxy classes, we find a precision of 92% at 80% recall for stars and a precision of 98% at 80% recall for galaxies in a typical field with $\sim30$ galaxies/arcmin$^2$. We investigate the deblending capability of our code, and find that clean deblends are handled robustly during object masking, even for significantly blended sources. This technique, or extensions using similar network architectures, may be applied to current and future deep imaging surveys such as LSST and WFIRST. We present new Gemini/GMOS optical spectroscopy of 16 extreme variability quasars (EVQs) that dimmed by more than 1.5 mag in the $g$ band between the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Dark Energy Survey (DES) epochs (separated by a few years in the quasar rest frame). The quasar sample covers a redshift range of $0.5 < z < 2.1$. Nearly half of these EVQs brightened significantly (by more than 0.5 mag in the $g$ band) in a few years after reaching their previous faintest state, and some EVQs showed rapid (non-blazar) variations of greater than 1-2 mag on timescales of only months. Leveraging on the large dynamic range in continuum variability between the earlier SDSS and the new GMOS spectra, we explore the associated variations in the broad Mg II,$\lambda2798$ line, whose variability properties have not been well studied before. The broad Mg II flux varies in the same direction as the continuum flux, albeit with a smaller amplitude, which indicates at least some portion of Mg II is reverberating to continuum changes. However, the width (FWHM) of Mg II does not vary accordingly as continuum changes for most objects in the sample, in contrast to the case of the broad Balmer lines. Using the width of broad Mg II to estimate the black hole mass therefore introduces a luminosity-dependent bias., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

The physical and chemical properties of the $\rho$ Ophiuchi A core were studied using 1.3 mm continuum and molecular lines such as C$^{18}$O, C$^{17}$O, CH$_3$OH and H$_2$CO observed with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). The continuum and C$^{18}$O data were combined with the single-dish data obtained with the IRAM 30m telescope and the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), respectively. The combined 1.3 mm continuum map reveals three major sources, SM1, SM1N and VLA1623 embedded in the extended emission running along the north-south direction, and two additional compact condensations in the continuum ridge connecting SM1 and VLA1623.The spatial distribution of the C$^{18}$O emission is significantly different from that of the continuum emission; the C$^{18}$O emission is enhanced at the eastern and western edges of the continuum ridge, with its peak brightness temperature of 40--50 K. This supports the picture that the $\rho$-Oph A core is heated externally from the nearby stars Oph S1 and HD147889. In contrast, the C$^{18}$O intensity is lower than 15--20 K at the center of the ridge where the continuum emission is bright. The C$^{18}$O abundance decreases inside the ridge, and shows anti-correlation with the N$_2$H$^+$ abundance. However, both C$^{18}$O and N$_2$H$^+$ show strong depletion at the Class 0 protostar VLA1623, implying that the dense gas surrounding VLA1623 is colder than the freeze-out temperature of N$_2$. The blue- and red-shifted components of CH$_3$OH and H$_2$CO lines are seen at SM1, suggesting outflow activity of embedded source in SM1, although the spatial distributions do not show clear bipolarity., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ
