We present a new method that successfully predicts the glass transition temperature $T_{\! \textrm{g}}$ of polymers based on their monomer structure. The model combines ideas from Group Additive Properties (GAP) and Quantitative Structure Property Relationship (QSPR) methods, where GAP (or Group Contributions) assumes that sub-monomer motifs contribute additively to $T_{\! \textrm{g}}$, and QSPR links $T_{\! \textrm{g}}$ to the physico-chemical properties of the structure through a set of molecular descriptors. This method yields fast and accurate predictions of $T_{\! \textrm{g}}$ for polymers based on chemical motifs outside the data sample, which resolves the main limitation of the GAP approach. Using a genetic algorithm, we show that only two molecular descriptors are necessary to predict $T_{\! \textrm{g}}$ for PAEK polymers. Directed graphs can be studied by their associated directed flag complex. The homology of this complex has been successful in applications as a topological invariant for digraphs. Through comparison with path homology theory, we derive a homotopy-like equivalence relation on digraph maps such that equivalent maps induce identical maps on the homology of the directed flag complex. Thus, we obtain an equivalence relation on digraphs such that equivalent digraphs have directed flag complexes with isomorphic homology. With the help of these relations, we can prove a generic stability theorem for the persistent homology of the directed flag complex of filtered digraphs. In particular, we show that the persistent homology of the directed flag complex of the shortest-path filtration of a weighted directed acyclic graph is stable to edge subdivision. In contrast, we also discuss some important instabilities that are not present in persistent path homology. We also derive similar equivalence relations for ordered simplicial complexes at large. Since such complexes can alternatively be viewed as simplicial sets, we verify that these two perspectives yield identical relations.

In the third APOKASC catalog, we present data for the complete sample of 15,808 evolved stars with APOGEE spectroscopic parameters and Kepler asteroseismology. We used ten independent asteroseismic analysis techniques and anchor our system on fundamental radii derived from Gaia $L$ and spectroscopic $T_{\rm eff}$. We provide evolutionary state, asteroseismic surface gravity, mass, radius, age, and the spectroscopic and asteroseismic measurements used to derive them for 12,418 stars. This includes 10,036 exceptionally precise measurements, with median fractional uncertainties in \nmax, \dnu, mass, radius and age of 0.6\%, 0.6\%, 3.8\%, 1.8\%, and 11.1\% respectively. We provide more limited data for 1,624 additional stars which either have lower quality data or are outside of our primary calibration domain. Using lower red giant branch (RGB) stars, we find a median age for the chemical thick disk of $9.14 \pm 0.05 ({\rm ran}) \pm 0.9 ({\rm sys})$ Gyr with an age dispersion of 1.1 Gyr, consistent with our error model. We calibrate our red clump (RC) mass loss to derive an age consistent with the lower RGB and provide asymptotic GB and RGB ages for luminous stars. We also find a sharp upper age boundary in the chemical thin disk. We find that scaling relations are precise and accurate on the lower RGB and RC, but they become more model dependent for more luminous giants and break down at the tip of the RGB. Red Giant stars host solar-like oscillations which have mixed character, being sensitive to conditions both in the outer convection zone and deep within the interior. The properties of these modes are sensitive to both core rotation and magnetic fields. While asteroseismic studies of the former have been done on a large scale, studies of the latter are currently limited to tens of stars. We aim to produce the first large catalogue of both magnetic and rotational perturbations. We jointly constrain these parameters by devising an automated method for fitting the power spectra directly. We successfully apply the method to 302 low-luminosity red giants. We find a clear bimodality in core rotation rate. The primary peak is at $\delta \nu_{\mathrm{rot}}$ = 0.32 $\mu$Hz, and the secondary at $\delta \nu_{\mathrm{rot}}$ = 0.47 $\mu$Hz. Combining our results with literature values, we find that the percentage of stars rotating much more rapidly than the population average increases with evolutionary state. We measure magnetic splittings of 2$\sigma$ significance in 23 stars. While the most extreme magnetic splitting values appear in stars with masses > 1.1M$_{\odot}$, implying they formerly hosted a convective core, a small but statistically significant magnetic splitting is measured at lower masses. Asymmetry between the frequencies of a rotationally split multiplet has previously been used to diagnose the presence of a magnetic perturbation. We find that of the stars with a significant detection of magnetic perturbation, 43\% do not show strong asymmetry. PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

The chromatic alpha filtration is a generalization of the alpha filtration that can encode spatial relationships among classes of labelled point cloud data, and has applications in topological data analysis of multi-species data. In this paper we introduce the chromatic Delaunay--\v{C}ech and chromatic Delaunay--Rips filtrations, which are computationally favourable alternatives to the chromatic alpha filtration. We use generalized discrete Morse theory to show that the \v{C}ech, chromatic Delaunay--\v{C}ech, and chromatic alpha filtrations are related by simplicial collapses. Our result generalizes a result of Bauer and Edelsbrunner from the non-chromatic to the chromatic setting. We also show that the chromatic Delaunay--Rips filtration is locally stable to perturbations of the underlying point cloud. Our results provide theoretical justification for the use of chromatic Delaunay--\v{C}ech and chromatic Delaunay--Rips filtrations in applications, and we demonstrate their computational advantage with numerical experiments., Comment: 48 pages, 11 figures

The KEYSTONE project aims to enhance our understanding of solar-like oscillators by delivering a catalogue of global asteroseismic parameters (${\Delta\nu}$ and ${\nu_{\rm max}}$) for 173 stars, comprising mainly dwarfs and subgiants, observed by the K2 mission in its short-cadence mode during campaigns 6-19. We derive atmospheric parameters and luminosities using spectroscopic data from TRES, astrometric data from $\textit{Gaia}$, and the infrared flux method (IRFM) for a comprehensive stellar characterisation. Asteroseismic parameters are robustly extracted using three independent methods, complemented by an iterative refinement of the spectroscopic analyses using seismic ${\log g}$ values to enhance parameter accuracy. Our analysis identifies new detections of solar-like oscillations in 159 stars, providing an important complement to already published results from previous campaigns. The catalogue provides homogeneously derived atmospheric parameters and luminosities for the majority of the sample. Comparison between spectroscopic ${T_{\rm eff}}$ and those obtained from the IRFM demonstrates excellent agreement. Fuelled by space photometry, asteroseismology is vastly benefitting the study of cool main-sequence stars, which exhibit convection-driven solar-like oscillations. Even so, the tiny oscillation amplitudes in K dwarfs continue to pose a challenge to space-based asteroseismology. A viable alternative is offered by the lower stellar noise over the oscillation timescales in Doppler observations. In this letter we present the definite detection of solar-like oscillations in the bright K5 dwarf $\epsilon$ Indi based on time-intensive observations collected with the ESPRESSO spectrograph at the VLT, thus making it the coolest seismic dwarf ever observed. We measured the frequencies of a total of 19 modes of degree $\ell=0$--2 along with $\nu_{\rm max}=5305\pm176\:{\rm \mu Hz}$ and $\Delta\nu=201.25\pm0.16\:{\rm \mu Hz}$. The peak amplitude of radial modes is $2.6\pm0.5\:{\rm cm\,s^{-1}}$, or a mere ${\sim} 14\%$ of the solar value. Measured mode amplitudes are ${\sim} 2$ times lower than predicted from a nominal $L/M$ scaling relation and favour a scaling closer to $(L/M)^{1.5}$ below ${\sim} 5500\:{\rm K}$, carrying important implications for our understanding of the coupling efficiency between pulsations and near-surface convection in K dwarfs. This detection conclusively shows that precise asteroseismology of cool dwarfs is possible down to at least the mid-K regime using next-generation spectrographs on large-aperture telescopes, effectively opening up a new domain in observational asteroseismology., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters

The COVID-19 virus brought on a public health emergency that massively disrupted school systems and learning nationwide. During the 2020-2021 school year, many local education agencies (LEAs) in Pennsylvania and other states adopted remote learning to help slow the virus's spread. However, remote learning came with challenges for students, families, and LEAs. These challenges included very practical ones like not having a reliable internet connection or the correct link to log into classes, as well as fatigue from so many remote meetings and feelings of social isolation. This brief examines remote learning in Pennsylvania and its role in shaping education outcomes and COVID-19 case rates in local communities during the 2020-2021 school year. Key findings for the 2020-2021 school year: (1) Vulnerable groups of students were more likely than students overall to attend LEAs where the predominant instructional modes included remote learning; (2) The same groups of students were also more likely to be in LEAs where larger shares of the student population had trouble accessing reliable internet; (3) More remote learning was associated with lower assessment performance in grades 5-8, especially in schools with higher levels of economic disadvantage. It was also associated with lower suspension rates in grades 6-12 and did not appear to harm or help graduation rates; and (4) Remote learning in high school was associated with lower subsequent COVID-19 rates within an LEA's boundary, suggesting it had an important public health benefit. Photometric time series gathered by space telescopes such as CoRoT and Kepler allow to detect solar-like oscillations in red-giant stars and to measure their global seismic constraints, which can be used to infer global stellar properties (e.g. masses, radii, evolutionary states). Combining such precise constraints with photospheric abundances provides a means of testing mixing processes that occur inside red-giant stars. In this work, we conduct a detailed spectroscopic and seismic analysis of nine nearby (d < 200 pc) red-giant stars observed by Kepler. Both seismic constraints and grid-based modelling approaches are used to determine precise fundamental parameters for those evolved stars. We compare distances and radii derived from Gaia Data Release 3 parallaxes with those inferred by a combination of seismic, spectroscopic and photometric constraints. We find no deviations within errorsbars, however the small sample size and the associated uncertainties are a limiting factor for such comparison. We use the period spacing of mixed modes to distinguish between ascending red-giants and red-clump stars. Based on the evolutionary status, we apply corrections to the values of $\Delta\nu$ for some stars, resulting in a slight improvement to the agreement between seismic and photometric distances. Finally, we couple constraints on detailed chemical abundances with the inferred masses, radii and evolutionary states. Our results corroborate previous studies that show that observed abundances of lithium and carbon isotopic ratio are in contrast with predictions from standard models, giving robust evidence for the occurrence of additional mixing during the red-giant phase., Comment: 18 pages, 19 figures

The COVID-19 pandemic raised concerns about the possibility of increased staff attrition from the public school sector, as it did for other occupations during the Great Resignation that followed the pandemic's onset. Recruiting and retaining education staff were pressing challenges even before the pandemic began. Since March 2020, education staff have needed to adapt to new job expectations and risk exposure to an unknown virus. These factors might have contributed to staff leaving public education jobs due to mental and physical health concerns and other issues. This research brief describes staff attrition during the pandemic from Pennsylvania local education agencies (LEAs). The brief describes annual rates of staff leaving the statewide public school sector from several jobs--including teachers, health and counseling staff, school administrators, and LEA administrators--and how changes in attrition during the pandemic varied with staff, school, and LEA characteristics. Key findings for teachers, health and counseling staff, and administrators include: (1) five percent of staff working in Pennsylvania local education agencies (LEAs) in fall 2020 left the statewide public school sector by fall 2021, an increase from 4 percent attrition in preceding years; (2) pre-pandemic attrition rates for staff of color were generally higher than for non-Hispanic White staff, and these differences grew during the pandemic except for school administrators, where they narrowed; and (3) gaps in attrition rates were also exacerbated during the pandemic for teachers and health and counseling staff early in their careers and in charter schools and for LEA administrators in large LEAs. We present solar low-degree rotational splitting values based on a new analysis of Sun-as-a-star observations from the Birmingham Solar Oscillations Network, covering a 16,425-day period from 1976 December 31--2021 December 20 with a duty cycle of 57 per cent. The splitting values are estimated from the power spectrum using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling method, and we also present for comparison the results from an analysis of 100 realizations of synthetic data with the same resolution and gap structure. Comparison of the scatter in the results from the synthetic realizations with their estimated uncertainties suggests that for this data set the formal uncertainty estimates are about 30 per cent too small. An upward bias in the splittings at frequencies above 2200 microHz, where the components are not fully resolved, is seen in both the observed and synthetic data. The disruptions to schooling created by the COVID-19 pandemic prompted nationwide concern about negative impacts on academic proficiency, particularly for vulnerable student populations. Pennsylvania's 2021 statewide assessments offered the first opportunity since the pandemic began to assess how students across the Commonwealth were faring, whether achievement gaps had widened, and how remote learning affected student performance. As in other states, the raw assessment data did not tell the full story of the pandemic's impacts on academic proficiency. Fewer Pennsylvania students participated in the 2021 assessments than in prior years, and test takers were not a representative sample of all students. In addition, test administration dates varied widely across the state in 2021, with some local education agencies (LEAs) postponing the usual spring assessments to the fall. Using a predictive model that accounts for the unique assessment issues in 2021 and the instructional modes that Pennsylvania LEAs offered, this research brief provides a fuller picture of the pandemic's impacts on academic proficiency in grades 5 through 8. Key findings for Pennsylvania students in grades 5 through 8 include: (1) students in vulnerable groups and in fully remote learning had lower assessment participation rates than other students in 2021; (2) the pandemic led to a substantial reduction in academic proficiency statewide in 2021, reducing academic achievement even more than the results for tested students indicated (3) the pandemic had consistently large negative academic effects across student groups, including for vulnerable groups that had low rates of proficiency before the pandemic; and (4) LEAs that were fully remote after winter break saw lower proficiency rates in 2021, compared with LEAs that offered fully in-person learning to similar students. Quantum computers are rapidly becoming more capable, with dramatic increases in both qubit count and quality. Among different hardware approaches, trapped-ion quantum processors are a leading technology for quantum computing, with established high-fidelity operations and architectures with promising scaling. Here, we demonstrate and thoroughly benchmark the IonQ Forte system: configured as a single-chain 30-qubit trapped-ion quantum computer with all-to-all operations. We assess the performance of our quantum computer operation at the component level via direct randomized benchmarking (DRB) across all 30 choose 2 = 435 gate pairs. We then show the results of application-oriented benchmarks and show that the system passes the suite of algorithmic qubit (AQ) benchmarks up to #AQ 29. Finally, we use our component-level benchmarking to build a system-level model to predict the application benchmarking data through direct simulation. While we find that the system-level model correlates with the experiment in predicting application circuit performance, we note quantitative discrepancies indicating significant out-of-model errors, leading to higher predicted performance than what is observed. This highlights that as quantum computers move toward larger and higher-quality devices, characterization becomes more challenging, suggesting future work required to push performance further., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures

To detect Earth-mass planets using the Doppler method, a major obstacle is to differentiate the planetary signal from intrinsic stellar variability (e.g., pulsations, granulation, spots and plages). Convective blueshift, which results from small-scale convection at the surface of Sun-like stars, is relevant for Earth-twin detections as it exhibits Doppler noise on the order of 1 m/s. Here, we present a simple model for convective blueshift based on fundamental equations of stellar structure. Our model successfully matches observations of convective blueshift for FGK stars. Based on our model, we also compute the intrinsic noise floor for stellar granulation in the radial velocity observations. We find that for a given mass range, stars with higher metallicities display lower radial-velocity dispersion due to granulation, in agreement with MHD simulations. We also provide a set of formulae to predict the amplitude of radial-velocity dispersion due to granulation as a function of stellar parameters. Asteroseismology has transformed stellar astrophysics. Red giant asteroseismology is a prime example, with oscillation periods and amplitudes that are readily detectable with time-domain space-based telescopes. These oscillations can be used to infer masses, ages and radii for large numbers of stars, providing unique constraints on stellar populations in our galaxy. The cadence, duration, and spatial resolution of the Roman galactic bulge time-domain survey (GBTDS) are well-suited for asteroseismology and will probe an important population not studied by prior missions. We identify photometric precision as a key requirement for realizing the potential of asteroseismology with Roman. A precision of 1 mmag per 15-min cadence or better for saturated stars will enable detections of the populous red clump star population in the Galactic bulge. If the survey efficiency is better than expected, we argue for repeat observations of the same fields to improve photometric precision, or covering additional fields to expand the stellar population reach if the photometric precision for saturated stars is better than 1 mmag. Asteroseismology is relatively insensitive to the timing of the observations during the mission, and the prime red clump targets can be observed in a single 70 day campaign in any given field. Complementary stellar characterization, particularly astrometry tied to the Gaia system, will also dramatically expand the diagnostic power of asteroseismology. When main-sequence stars expand into red giants, they are expected to engulf close-in planets. Until now, the absence of planets with short orbital periods around post-expansion, core-helium-burning red giants has been interpreted as evidence that short-period planets around Sun-like stars do not survive the giant expansion phase of their host stars. Here we present the discovery that the giant planet 8 Ursae Minoris b orbits a core-helium-burning red giant. At a distance of only 0.5 au from its host star, the planet would have been engulfed by its host star, which is predicted by standard single-star evolution to have previously expanded to a radius of 0.7 au. Given the brief lifetime of helium-burning giants, the nearly circular orbit of the planet is challenging to reconcile with scenarios in which the planet survives by having a distant orbit initially. Instead, the planet may have avoided engulfment through a stellar merger that either altered the evolution of the host star or produced 8 Ursae Minoris b as a second-generation planet. This system shows that core-helium-burning red giants can harbour close planets and provides evidence for the role of non-canonical stellar evolution in the extended survival of late-stage exoplanetary systems., Comment: Published in Nature on 28 June 2023. The asteroseismic analysis of stellar power density spectra is often computationally expensive. The models used in the analysis may use several dozen parameters to accurately describe features in the spectra caused by oscillation modes and surface granulation. Many parameters are often highly correlated, making the parameter space difficult to quickly and accurately sample. They are, however, all dependent on a smaller set of parameters, namely the fundamental stellar properties. We aim to leverage this to simplify the process of sampling the model parameter space for the asteroseismic analysis of solar-like oscillators, with an emphasis on mode identification. Using a large set of previous observations, we applied principal component analysis to the sample covariance matrix to select a new basis on which to sample the model parameters. Selecting the subset of basis vectors that explains the majority of the sample variance, we redefine the model parameter prior probability density distributions in terms of a smaller set of latent parameters. We are able to reduce the dimensionality of the sampled parameter space by a factor of two to three. The number of latent parameters needed to accurately model the stellar oscillation spectra cannot be determined exactly but is likely only between four and six. Using two latent parameters, the method is able to describe the bulk features of the oscillation spectrum, while including more latent parameters allows for a frequency precision better than $\approx10\%$ of the small frequency separation for a given target. We find that sampling a lower-rank latent parameter space still allows for accurate mode identification and parameter estimation on solar-like oscillators over a wide range of evolutionary stages. Asteroseismology is playing an increasingly important role in the characterization of red-giant host stars and their planetary systems. Here, we conduct detailed asteroseismic modeling of the evolved red-giant branch (RGB) hosts KOI-3886 and $\iota$ Draconis, making use of end-of-mission Kepler (KOI-3886) and multi-sector TESS ($\iota$ Draconis) time-series photometry. We also model the benchmark star KIC 8410637, a member of an eclipsing binary, thus providing a direct test to the seismic determination. We test the impact of adopting different sets of observed modes as seismic constraints. Inclusion of $\ell=1$ and 2 modes improves the precision on the stellar parameters, albeit marginally, compared to adopting radial modes alone, with $1.9$-$3.0\%$ (radius), $5$-$9\%$ (mass), and $19$-$25\%$ (age) reached when using all p-dominated modes as constraints. Given the very small spacing of adjacent dipole mixed modes in evolved RGB stars, the sparse set of observed g-dominated modes is not able to provide extra constraints, further leading to highly multimodal posteriors. Access to multi-year time-series photometry does not improve matters, with detailed modeling of evolved RGB stars based on (lower-resolution) TESS data sets attaining a precision commensurate with that based on end-of-mission Kepler data. Furthermore, we test the impact of varying the atmospheric boundary condition in our stellar models. We find mass and radius estimates to be insensitive to the description of the near-surface layers, at the expense of substantially changing both the near-surface structure of the best-fitting models and the values of associated parameters like the initial helium abundance, $Y_{\rm i}$. Attempts to measure $Y_{\rm i}$ from seismic modeling of red giants may thus be systematically dependent on the choice of atmospheric physics., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal (AJ)

The Birmingham Solar Oscillations Network (BiSON) observes acoustic oscillations of the Sun. The dominant noise source is caused by fluctuations of Earth's atmosphere, and BiSON seeks to mitigate this effect by combining multiple rapid observations in alternating polarisation states. Current instrumentation uses bespoke Pockels-effect cells to select the polarisation state. Here, we investigate an alternative off-the-shelf solution, a liquid crystal retarder, and discuss the potential impact of differences in performance. We show through electrical simulation of the photodiode-based detectors, and assessment of both types of polarisation device, that although the switching rate is slower the off-the-shelf LCD retarder is a viable replacement for a bespoke Pockels-effect cell. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission searches for new exoplanets. The observing strategy of TESS results in high-precision photometry of millions of stars across the sky, allowing for detailed asteroseismic studies of individual systems. In this work, we present a detailed asteroseismic analysis of the giant star HD 76920 hosting a highly eccentric giant planet ($e = 0.878$) with an orbital period of 415 days, using 5 sectors of TESS light curve that cover around 140 days of data. Solar-like oscillations in HD 76920 are detected around $52 \, \mu$Hz by TESS for the first time. By utilizing asteroseismic modeling that takes classical observational parameters and stellar oscillation frequencies as constraints, we determine improved measurements of the stellar mass ($1.22 \pm 0.11\, M_\odot$), radius ($8.68 \pm 0.34\,R_\odot$), and age ($5.2 \pm 1.4\,$Gyr). With the updated parameters of the host star, we update the semi-major axis and mass of the planet as $a=1.165 \pm 0.035$ au and $M_{\rm p}\sin{i} = 3.57 \pm 0.22\,M_{\rm Jup}$. With an orbital pericenter of $0.142 \pm 0.005$ au, we confirm that the planet is currently far away enough from the star to experience negligible tidal decay until being engulfed in the stellar envelope. The angle between the rotation and orbital axes of stars in binary systems -- the obliquity -- is an important indicator of how these systems form and evolve but few such measurements exist. We combine the sample of astrometric orbital inclinations from Gaia DR3 with a sample of solar-like oscillators in which rotational inclinations have been measured using asteroseismology. We supplement our sample with one binary whose visual orbit has been determined using speckle interferometry and present the projected spin-orbit alignments in five systems. We find that each system, and the overall sample, is consistent with alignment but there are important caveats. First, the asteroseismic rotational inclinations are fundamentally ambiguous and, second, we can only measure the projected (rather than true) obliquity. If rotational and orbital inclinations are independent and isotropically-distributed, however, the likelihood of drawing our data by chance is less than a few per cent. Though small, our data set argues against uniformly random obliquities in binary systems. We speculate that dozens more measurements could be made using data from NASA's TESS mission, mostly in red giants. The COVID-19 pandemic put unprecedented pressure on Pennsylvania schools to find new ways of educating students amid a worldwide health crisis. Terms like remote learning and hybrid learning became part of everyday language as local education agencies (LEAs) across the Commonwealth implemented different approaches to safely deliver instruction and support students' needs. This research brief describes how Pennsylvania LEAs (school districts and charter schools for purposes of this research) responded to public health and other challenges during the 2020--2021 school year.

We describe a new spectrophotometer for the Birmingham Solar Oscillations Network (BiSON), based on a next generation observation platform, BiSON:NG, a significantly miniaturised system making use of inexpensive consumer-grade hardware and off-the-shelf components, where possible. We show through system modelling and simulation, along with a summer observing campaign, that the prototype instrument produces data on the Sun's low-degree acoustic (p-mode) oscillations that are of equal quality and can be seamlessly integrated into the existing network. Refreshing the existing ageing hardware, and the extended observational network potential of BiSON:NG, will secure our ongoing programme of high-quality synoptic observations of the Sun's low-degree oscillations (e.g., for seismic monitoring of the solar cycle at a "whole Sun" level)., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, 1 table. Weighted digraphs are used to model a variety of natural systems and can exhibit interesting structure across a range of scales. In order to understand and compare these systems, we require stable, interpretable, multiscale descriptors. To this end, we propose grounded persistent path homology (GrPPH) - a new, functorial, topological descriptor that describes the structure of an edge-weighted digraph via a persistence barcode. We show there is a choice of circuit basis for the graph which yields geometrically interpretable representatives for the features in the barcode. Moreover, we show the barcode is stable, in bottleneck distance, to both numerical and structural perturbations. GrPPH arises from a flexible framework, parametrised by a choice of digraph chain complex and a choice of filtration; for completeness, we also investigate replacing the path homology complex, used in GrPPH, by the directed flag complex.

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission has provided photometric light curves for stars across nearly the entire sky. This allows for the application of asteroseismology to a pool of potential solar-like oscillators that is unprecedented in size. We aim to produce a catalogue of solar-like oscillators observed by TESS in the 120-second and 20-second cadence modes. The catalogue is intended to highlight stars oscillating at frequencies above the TESS 30-minute cadence Nyquist frequency with the purpose of encompassing the main sequence and subgiant evolutionary phases. We aim to provide estimates for the global asteroseismic parameters $\nu_{\mathrm{max}}$ and $\Delta\nu$. We apply a new probabilistic detection algorithm to the 120-second and 20-second light curves of over 250,000 stars. This algorithm flags targets that show characteristic signatures of solar-like oscillations. We manually vet the resulting list of targets to confirm the presence of solar-like oscillations. Using the probability densities computed by the algorithm, we measure the global asteroseismic parameters $\nu_{\mathrm{max}}$ and $\Delta\nu$. We produce a catalogue of 4,177 solar-like oscillators, reporting $\Delta\nu$ and $\nu_{\mathrm{max}}$ for $98\%$ of the total star count. The asteroseismic data reveals vast coverage of the HR diagram, populating the red giant branch, the subgiant regime and extending toward the main sequence. A crossmatch with external catalogs shows that 25 of the detected solar-like oscillators are a component of a spectroscopic binary, and 28 are confirmed planet host stars. Binary stars in which oscillations can be studied in either or both components can provide powerful constraints on our understanding of stellar physics. The bright binary 12 Bo\"otis (12 Boo) is a particularly promising system because the primary is roughly 60 per cent brighter than the secondary despite being only a few per cent more massive. Both stars have substantial surface convection zones and are therefore, presumably, solar-like oscillators. We report here the first detection of solar-like oscillations and ellipsoidal variations in the TESS light curve of 12 Boo. Though the solar-like oscillations are not clear enough to unambiguously measure individual mode frequencies, we combine global asteroseismic parameters and a precise fit to the spectral energy distribution (SED) to provide new constraints on the properties of the system that are several times more precise than values in the literature. The SED fit alone provides new effective temperatures, luminosities and radii of $6115\pm45\,\mathrm{K}$, $7.531\pm0.110\,\mathrm{L}_\odot$ and $2.450\pm0.045\,\mathrm{R}_\odot$ for 12 Boo A and $6200\pm60\,\mathrm{K}$, $4.692\pm0.095\,\mathrm{L}_\odot$ and $1.901\pm0.045\,\mathrm{R}_\odot$ for 12 Boo B. When combined with our asteroseismic constraints on 12 Boo A, we obtain an age of $2.67^{+0.12}_{-0.16}\,\mathrm{Gyr}$, which is consistent with that of 12 Boo B., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 6 pages, 4 figures

We propose to develop a wide-field and ultra-high-precision photometric survey mission, temporarily named "Earth 2.0 (ET)". This mission is designed to measure, for the first time, the occurrence rate and the orbital distributions of Earth-sized planets. ET consists of seven 30cm telescopes, to be launched to the Earth-Sun's L2 point. Six of these are transit telescopes with a field of view of 500 square degrees. Staring in the direction that encompasses the original Kepler field for four continuous years, this monitoring will return tens of thousands of transiting planets, including the elusive Earth twins orbiting solar-type stars. The seventh telescope is a 30cm microlensing telescope that will monitor an area of 4 square degrees toward the galactic bulge. This, combined with simultaneous ground-based KMTNet observations, will measure masses for hundreds of long-period and free-floating planets. Together, the transit and the microlensing telescopes will revolutionize our understandings of terrestrial planets across a large swath of orbital distances and free space.
