The frequency of forest disturbances has increased in recent years, provoking widespread defoliation, crown dieback and tree mortality. The ICP Forests monitoring network offers a unique platform for observing the impacts on forests of heatwaves, droughts and other extreme climatic events, as well as the trends of defoliation and mortality. The Italian ICP Forests Level I network consists of 261 permanent plots where tree crown defoliation and damage symptoms are assessed visually each year by well-trained crews of the Corpo Forestale dello Stato (2001-2016) and the Carabinieri Forestale from 2017 onward. This paper aims to assess the main tree species’ responses, in terms of defoliation and mortality, to severe climatic events. The results are discussed in relation to species-specific physiological behaviour and bioclimatic regions. A significant trend toward increasing defoliation and mortality has been observed since 2010 in both conifers and broadleaves. Conifers (especially Picea abies), which are largely diffuse in the Alpine regions, have suffered from bark beetle outbreaks due to severe windstorms (such as Vaia in 2018) and recurrent dry years. In the temperate regions, characterised by deciduous broadleaved trees, the most relevant defoliation events coincided with the driest and hottest years, with low relative humidity (2012, 2017 and 2021-2022), only partially recovering in the subsequent years. Among them, Fagus sylvatica and Quercus cerris, along with increased defoliation, showed symptoms caused by fungi of the genus Biscogniauxia, causal agents of “charcoal canker”, in less favourable site conditions. Quercus pubescens was the most resilient species, able to restore its crown after defoliation. The Mediterranean forests, with evergreen broadleaved species, showed no significant trends but were impacted at the most drought-prone coastal sites. The findings evidenced that the current ICP Forests network in Italy represents a fundamental infrastructure for monitoring impacts and trends connected to climate change and species-specific responses. A local intensification of the grid would help to capture under-represented species or ecological conditions.

This study investigates the use of atomic layer deposition (ALD) to mitigate multipacting phenomena inside superconducting radio frequency cavities used in particle accelerators while preserving high quality factors in the 1010 range. The unique ALD capability to control the film thickness down to the atomic level on arbitrary complex shape objects enables the fine-tuning of TiN film resistivity and total electron emission yield (TEEY) from coupons to devices. This level of control allows us to adequately choose a TiN film thickness that provides both high resistivity to prevent Ohmic losses and a low TEEY to mitigate multipacting for the application of interest. The methodology presented in this work can be scaled to other domains and devices subject to RF fields in vacuum and sensitive to multipacting or electron discharge processes with their own requirements in resistivities and TEEY values. Tree defoliation and mortality are triggered in Europe by extreme climatic events that are recurring since the beginning of XXI century. Data from the ICP Forests monitoring networks reveal a general worsening of tree conditions in the last ten years, as consequence of the drought and heat waves that affected the Southern (2017) and Central Europe (2018-2019). In Italy a significant increase of defoliation and tree mortality, assessed on the extensive (Level I) monitoring network, was observed after the 2017 dry summer, which impacted mainly the broadleaved forests (beech and oak forests) in the peninsular regions. Coniferous forests of the alpine belt were severely impacted in 2021, probably because of the co-occurrence of multiple causes, involving windstorm and bark beetle attacks. Chestnut forests suffer from pest (insect and pathogen) attacks. The intensive (Level II) monitoring network provides cases of study and allows to carry out specific cause-effect studies concerning the physiological effects on the environmental impacts, as well to observe the ecological processes following the disturbing events. Defoliation caused by drought or pest attacks induces the loss of physiological defenses (namely non-structural carbohydrates), that need several years to be restored. Then, the occurrence of more frequent and repeated heat and drought waves can produce irreversible effects. In this view, the long-term forest health monitoring is key to detect the extent and direction of changes in forest structure and composition, and represents an important tool for forest conservation and management.

The majority of patients hospitalized for heart failure (HF) are admitted to internal medicine (IM) rather than to cardiology (CA) units, but to date few studies have analyzed the characteristics of these two populations. In this snapshot survey, we compared consecutive patients admitted for HF in six IM units vs. one non-intensive CA unit. During the 6-month survey period, 467 patients were enrolled (127 in CA, 27.2% vs. 340 in IM, 72.8%). IM patients were almost 10 years older (CA 75 ± 10, IM 82 ± 8 years; p < 0.001), more frequently female (CA 39%, IM 55%; p = 0.002) and living at home alone (CA 12%, IM 21%; p = 0.017). The leading cause of hospitalization in both groups was acute worsening of HF (CA 42%, IM 53%; p = 0.031), followed by atrial fibrillation (CA 29%, IM 12%; p < 0.001) and infections (CA 24%, IM 27%; p = 0.563). Ischemic (CA 43%, IM 30%; p = 0.008) and dilated cardiomyopathy patients (CA 21%, IM 12%; p < 0.001) were primarily admitted to CA unit, whereas those with hypertensive heart disease to IM (CA 3%, IM 39%; p < 0.001). Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was available in 96% of CA patients, but only in 60% of IM patients (p = 0.001). Among patients with LVEF measured, those with LVEF < 40% were predominantly admitted to CA (CA 60%, IM 14%; p < 0.001), whereas those with LVEF ≥ 50% were admitted to IM (CA 21%, IM 33%; p = 0.019); 26% of IM patients were discharged without a known LVEF. Medical treatments also significantly differed, according to patients' clinical and instrumental characteristics in each unit. This study demonstrates important differences between HF patients hospitalized in CA vs. IM, and the need for a greater interaction between these two medical specialties for a better care of HF patients.
