Purpose: Vitreoretinal lymphoma (VRL) is a rare lymphoma affecting the vitreous and the retina. Clinical diagnosis is challenging and often delayed and may lead to aggravated prognosis. This study aims to review multimodal imaging findings in VRL. Methods: We performed a comprehensive narrative review of the multimodal imaging findings that might be useful in the detection of VRL lesions. Results: The most frequent ocular manifestations of VRL are vitritis, and retinal and sub-retinal Pigmented Epithelium (RPE) infiltrations. Color Fundus Photography (CFP) detects vitreous haze, optic nerve, retinal and sub-RPE infiltration. Ultra-wide field imaging allows visualization of different patterns of vitreous haze and monitoring of VRL evolution through the detection of chorio-retinal atrophy (CRA). Fundus Autofluorescence shows granular hypo- and hyper-autofluorescent pattern. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) reveals vitreous cells, vertical hyper-reflective lesions and sub-RPE infiltrates. Fluorescein Angiography (FA) shows hypo or hyperfluorescent round lesions at the late stages of the examination, while Indocyanine Green Angiography (ICGA) detects round areas of focal hypo-fluorescence in the early phases that gradually enlarge in the late phases. B-scan ultrasonography detects vitreous opacities and homogeneous hyperreflective corpuscular material in the vitreous, and is a strongly recommended tool in suspecting VRL and is particularly useful when vitreous haze is impeding retinal examination. Conclusion: Diagnostic vitrectomy with cytopathological analysis remains the gold standard for VRL diagnosis, however multimodal imaging allows the identification of suggestive retinal and vitreal lesions for early suspicion, diagnosis, and treatment and monitoring disease progression and response to treatment. Pathological myopia (PM) is a severe ocular disease leading to blindness. As a traditional noninvasive diagnostic method, fundus color photography (FCP) is widely used in detecting PM due to its high fidelity and precision. However, manual examination of fundus photographs for PM is time-consuming and prone to high error rates. Existing automated detection technologies have yet to study the detailed classification in diagnosing different stages of PM lesions. In this paper, we proposed an intelligent system which utilized Resnet101 technology to multi-categorically diagnose PM by classifying FCPs with different stages of lesions. The system subdivided different stages of PM into eight subcategories, aiming to enhance the precision and efficiency of the diagnostic process. It achieved an average accuracy rate of 98.86% in detection of PM, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 98.96%. For the eight subcategories of PM, the detection accuracy reached 99.63%, with an AUC of 99.98%. Compared with other widely used multi-class models such as VGG16, Vision Transformer (VIT), EfficientNet, this system demonstrates higher accuracy and AUC. The science of diabetes care has progressed to provide a better understanding of the oxidative and inflammatory lesions and pathophysiology of the neurovascular unit within the retina (and brain) that occur early in diabetes, even prediabetes. Screening for retinal structural abnormalities, has traditionally been performed by fundus examination or color fundus photography; however, these imaging techniques detect the disease only when there are sufficient lesions, predominantly hemorrhagic, that are recognized to occur late in the disease process after significant neuronal apoptosis and atrophy, as well as microvascular occlusion with alterations in vision. Thus, interventions have been primarily oriented toward the later-detected stages, and clinical trials, while demonstrating a slowing of the disease progression, demonstrate minimal visual improvement and modest reduction in the continued loss over prolonged periods. Similarly, vision measurement utilizing charts detects only problems of visual function late, as the process begins most often parafoveally with increasing number and progressive expansion, including into the fovea. While visual acuity has long been used to define endpoints of visual function for such trials, current methods reviewed herein are found to be imprecise. We review improved methods of testing visual function and newer imaging techniques with the recommendation that these must be utilized to discover and evaluate the injury earlier in the disease process, even in the prediabetic state. This would allow earlier therapy with ocular as well as systemic pharmacologic treatments that lower the and neuro-inflammatory processes within eye and brain. This also may include newer, micropulsed laser therapy that, if applied during the earlier cascade, should result in improved and often normalized retinal function without the adverse treatment effects of standard photocoagulation therapy. Purpose: To evaluate the baseline characteristics of fundus autofluorescence (FAF) in patients with submacular hemorrhage (SMH). Methods: This retrospective study included patients diagnosed with treatment-naive, foveal-involving subretinal hemorrhage (size > 2-disc diameters) of any etiology, presenting between June 2017 and June 2023. Only cases with good-quality color fundus photographs, optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans, and blue-light FAF images at baseline were included. SMH imaging characteristics were documented and correlated with treatment outcomes. A successful treatment outcome was defined as the reduction, displacement or clearance of the SMH from beneath the fovea. Results: Nineteen cases of SMH (13 males, 6 females), ranging from 14 to 85 years, were analyzed. Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) was the most common etiology (n = 11, 58%). Baseline visual acuity ranged from 6/9 to counting fingers at ½ meter, with a median presentation time of 7 days from symptom onset (range: 1–57 days). Treatment success was observed in 13 eyes (68%). Hypoautofluoroscence on FAF was significantly associated with SMH resolution (p = 0.021). However, no association was found between treatment success and clinical hemorrhage characteristics (p = 0.222), OCT findings (p = 0.222), or specific treatments (p > 0.05). Hypoautofluoroscence on FAF was the sole predictor of treatment success, as demonstrated by Spearman's correlation (r = 0.637; p = 0.003) and linear regression analysis (p = 0.003). Conclusion: FAF, in conjunction with color fundus photography and OCT, may provide valuable insights for clinicians in formulating treatment strategies for patients with SMH. The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of quantitatively evaluating a sapphire's color by analyzing gemstone images. The color characteristics of gemstones through photography and color extraction were accurately captured, and the key color parameters for different color regions of gemstones were extracted. Then, the color of sapphires was simulated by statistical method and function simulation method. The results indicate that the brightness value of the bright area was the highest and the chroma value of the "fire" area was the highest. The chroma (C) of the sapphires was linearly positively correlated with the absolute value of its b value, and the brightness (L) showed a quadratic correlation with its chromaticity parameters (b or C). The function simulation method with an average of b as the main independent variable had a larger standard deviation, which proves that this method has a stronger ability to distinguish the differences in a sapphire's color. This method can be extended to the color evaluation of other colored gemstones, and it can be used to form a gemstone color evaluation system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: To investigate the relationship between changes in the optic disc size and color, cup-to-disc (C/D) ratio, and axial elongation in schoolchildren. Methods: A prospective cohort study was performed in 75 right eyes of elementary school students for six years (from 8.5 to 14.5 years old). In the first and last year, all participants underwent optical axial length measurement and color fundus photography. The optic disc color was calculated by dividing the intensity of red by the sum of the intensity of red, green, and blue. The optic disc area was calculated by modifying the number of pixels according to Bennett's formula. The C/D ratio was calculated by dividing the vertical cup diameter by vertical optic disc diameter. Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to compare these optic disc parameters and axial length in the first and last year. Results: Mean axial length in the last year (24.82 mm) was significantly longer than that in the first year (23.34 mm). Likewise, the mean optic disc size was significantly smaller in the last year (41,946 pixels) than that in the first year (46,144 pixels). The mean optic disc color in the last year (0.49) was significantly more reddish than that in the first year (0.46), while the mean C/D ratio in last year (0.50) was significantly smaller than that in first year (0.52). Introduction: This study presents a rare case of multiple evanescent white dot syndrome (MEWDS) with atypical electrooculogram (EOG) findings, as well as abnormal en-face images of minimum intensity projection (Min-IP) and the en-face inner segment/outer segment-ellipsoid complex. Methods: A 25-year-old female patient presented with painless visual impairment and photopsia in her right eye for a duration of two days. Multimodal imaging was employed including color fundus photography (CFP), fundus autofluorescence (FAF), spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), and en-face images of Min-IP and the en-face inner segment/outer segment-ellipsoid complex were performed. Results: In the right eye, multifocal small white spots were observed surrounding the posterior pole and optic disc of retina with the granular appearance of the fovea. FAF displayed of hyperfluorescence. SD-OCT appearance of MEWDS demonstrated primarily disrupted ellipsoid zone (EZ), photoreceptor outer segments, and interdigitation zone (IZ) complex within the fovea. The en-face images of the inner segment/outer segment-ellipsoid complex and Min-IP exhibited hyperreflective spots in the right eye. In the left eye, interestingly, hyperreflective spots were also observed on the en-face image of the inner segment/outer segment-ellipsoid complex. EOG revealed an Arden ratio of 2.5 for the right eye, while the left eye exhibited an Arden ratio of 1.7. Conclusion: The en-face image of the inner segment/outer segment-ellipsoid complex in MEWDS exhibits aberrant features and it is noteworthy that a similar alteration may occur in the fellow eye. Further investigation is required to explore the relationship between MEWDS and EOG. We investigated the association of retinopathy with the risk of dementia in a general older Japanese population. A total of 1709 population-based residents aged 60 years or older without dementia were followed prospectively for 10 years (2007–2017). They underwent color fundus photography in 2007. Retinopathy was graded according to the Modified Airlie House Classification. Main outcome was the Incidence of dementia. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the risk of dementia by the presence of retinopathy. During the follow-up period, 374 participants developed all-cause dementia. The cumulative incidence of dementia was significantly higher in those with retinopathy than those without (p < 0.05). Individuals with retinopathy had significantly higher risk of developing dementia than those without after adjustment for potential confounding factors (HR 1.64, 95% CI 1.19–2.25). Regarding the components of retinopathy, the presence of microaneurysms was significantly associated with a higher multivariable-adjusted HR for incident dementia (HR 1.94, 95% CI 1.37–2.74). Our findings suggest that, in addition to systemic risk factors, retinal microvascular signs from fundus photography provide valuable information for estimating the risk of developing dementia. Highly myopic optic nerve head (ONH) abnormalities encompass a series of complications resulting from the stretching of papillary and peripapillary structures during significant axial elongation. The morphological changes in the ONH typically initiate with disk tilting or rotation, progressing to PHOMS and PPA. Tissue defects in each layer manifest as focal lamina cribrosa defects (FLDs), peripapillary intrachoroidal cavitations (PICCs), and acquired pits of the optic nerve (APON). Anterior vitreous/vascular traction and posterior scleral protrusion may lead to prelaminar schisis as well as paravascular cysts and holes, which can potentially develop into retinoschisis. Traditional color fundus photography (CFP) is often insufficient for visualizing most of these lesions, yet their description and quantification benefit significantly from the advancements in optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA), complemented by fundus autofluorescence (FAF), indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), and three-dimensional imaging. The effective diagnosis and classification of ONH abnormalities heavily rely on a comprehensive understanding of their multimodal imaging features, as outlined in this review. These findings provide valuable insights into optic neuropathy in high myopia, establishing a solid foundation for future endeavors in disease monitoring and treatment guidance. To develop guidelines for ocular surveillance and early intervention for individuals with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease. Systematic review of the literature. Expert panel of retina specialists and ocular oncologists. A consortium of experts on clinical management of all-organ aspects of VHL disease was convened. Working groups with expertise in organ-specific features of VHL disease were tasked with development of evidence-based guidelines for each organ system. The ophthalmology subcommittee formulated questions for consideration and performed a systematic literature review. Evidence was graded for topic quality and relevance and the strength of each recommendation, and guideline recommendations were developed. The quality of evidence was limited, and no controlled clinical trial data were available. Consensus guidelines included: (1) individuals with known or suspected VHL disease should undergo periodic ocular screening (evidence type, III; evidence strength, C; degree of consensus, 2A); (2) patients at risk of VHL disease, including first-degree relatives of patients with known VHL disease, or any patient with single or multifocal retinal hemangioblastomas (RHs), should undergo genetic testing for pathologic VHL disease gene variants as part of an appropriate medical evaluation (III/C/2A); (3) ocular screening should begin within 12 months after birth and continue throughout life (III/C/2A); (4) ocular screening should occur approximately every 6 to 12 months until 30 years of age and then at least yearly thereafter (III/C-D/2A); (5) ocular screening should be performed before a planned pregnancy and every 6 to 12 months during pregnancy (IV/D/2A); (6) ultra-widefield color fundus photography may be helpful in certain circumstances to monitor RHs, and ultra-widefield fluorescein angiography may be helpful in certain circumstances to detect small RHs (IV/D/2A); (7) patients should be managed, whenever possible, by those with subspecialty training, with experience with VHL disease or RHs, or with both and ideally within the context of a multidisciplinary center capable of providing multiorgan surveillance and access to genetic testing (IV/D/2A); (8) extramacular or extrapapillary RHs should be treated promptly (III/C/2A). Based on available evidence from observational studies, broad agreement was reached for a strategy of lifelong surveillance and early treatment for ocular VHL disease. Multicolor (MC) imaging is an innovative pseudocolor fundus imaging modality based on confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy. It effectively scans the retina at different depths to create a composite image. The green reflectance image depicts the middle retinal while blue reflectance image provides images of the retinal surface. The infrared reflectance image depicts retinal structures at the level of outer retina and choroid. We systematically analyze published case reports, case series, and original articles on MC imaging where it has helped in discovering additional clinical features of retinal diseases not readily apparent on conventional color fundus photography and played a role in monitoring the response to treatment. Purpose: To characterize features of central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) using multicolor (MC) imaging and to assess the differences in CRAO grading between color fundus photography (CFP) and MC image qualitatively and quantitatively. Methods: We conducted a prospective, cross-sectional study in the Department of Ophthalmology of Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University. In total, 86 acute CRAO patients were included. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), CFP, and MC examinations were taken at baseline. Based on the findings of these three examinations, CRAO was divided into three grades (incomplete, subtotal, and total). Based on OCT grading criteria, we qualitatively compared the ability of grading CRAO by CFP and MC. CRAO patient's visual acuity (VA) was obtained from the initial visit. The retinal thickness was measured by SD-OCT. Superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP) were obtained from optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) examinations. Quantitative data were compared across the three acute CRAO subgroups and against three examination findings. Results: MC image had significantly higher power of acute CRAO detection than CFP (P = 0.03). In the same group of CRAO patients, there was no significant difference in VA when comparing OCT with the MC grading system or with the CFP grading system (all P > 0.05). Significant differences in VA were found between the three CRAO subgroups only under MC grading (P = 0.016). In incomplete CRAO patients, significant differences were found in central fovea thickness (CFT) when comparing OCT with the CFP grading system (P = 0.019). In the same group of CRAO patients, there was no significant difference in retinal thickness when comparing OCT with the MC grading system (All P > 0.05). Significance differences in CFT (P < 0.001), innermost retinal layer (IMRL; P < 0.01), middle retinal layer (MRL; P < 0.001), and outer retinal layer (ORL; P = 0.021) were found between the three CRAO subgroups by MC grading. Vessel density of SCP showed a statistically increased as the severity of three CRAO subgroups (P = 0.03), whereas DCP did not have significant differences (P = 0.745). Comparisons were made between the OCT grading method and the MC and CFP grading methods; there is no significant difference in vessel density of SCP and DCP (All P > 0.05). Conclusion: The images obtained by MC are superior to those obtained by CFP in CRAO grading, retinal thickness, and vessel density measurement. The imagistic evaluation of non-neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is crucial for diagnosis, monitoring progression, and guiding management of the disease. Dry AMD, characterized primarily by the presence of drusen and retinal pigment epithelium atrophy, requires detailed visualization of the retinal structure to assess its severity and progression. Several imaging modalities are pivotal in the evaluation of non-neovascular AMD, including optical coherence tomography, fundus autofluorescence, or color fundus photography. In the context of emerging therapies for geographic atrophy, like pegcetacoplan, it is critical to establish the baseline status of the disease, monitor the development and expansion of geographic atrophy, and to evaluate the retina's response to potential treatments in clinical trials. The present review, while initially providing a comprehensive description of the pathophysiology involved in AMD, aims to offer an overview of the imaging modalities employed in the evaluation of non-neovascular AMD. Special emphasis is placed on the assessment of progression biomarkers as discerned through optical coherence tomography. As the landscape of AMD treatment continues to evolve, advanced imaging techniques will remain at the forefront, enabling clinicians to offer the most effective and tailored treatments to their patients. This study aims to evaluate the ABCA4 variants in patients diagnosed with Stargardt disease. This is a retrospective study designed to investigate variants in the ABCA4 in Stargardt disease and the clinical findings of the cases. Sex, age, age of onset of symptoms, best-corrected visual acuity, color fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, and visual field test of the patients were recorded. Genetic analyses were screened, and patients with at least two variants in the ABCA4 were included in this study. Twenty-seven patients diagnosed with Stargardt disease with the ABCA4 variants were included in this study. Twelve of them (44.4%) were female and fifteen (55.5%) were male. The mean age of the cases was 27.44 years (ranging from 8 to 56 years). Thirty different variants were detected in 54 ABCA4 alleles of 27 patients. The two most common pathogenic variants were c.5882 G>A p.(Gly1961Glu) and c.52C>T p.(Arg18Trp) in this cohort. Two novel variants were identified (c.3855_3856dup, c.1554 + 3_1554 + 4del) and the patient with the c.1554 + 3_1554 + 4del variant additionally had a different ABCA4 variant in trans. The other novel variant was homozygous. In this study, two novel variants were described in a Turkish cohort with Stargardt disease. The variant c.52C>T p.(Arg18Trp) was the most common disease-causing variant besides the c.5882 G>A p.(Gly1961Glu) which was identified frequently in the previous studies. A larger sample size is necessary for describing different pathogenic variants and understanding the phenotype-genotype correlations. Identifying variants and their pathogenicity in inherited diseases is important for widening the disease-causing mutations and future treatment options. Two novel variants (c.3855_3856dup, c.5910_5912dup) were described in a cohort with Stargardt disease. The most common variants could be different in ethnic groups. The variant c.52C>T p.(Arg18Trp) was the most common variant besides the c.5882G>A p.(Gly1961Glu) which was frequently identified in the previous studies. This study aimed to review the current literature exploring the utility of noninvasive ocular imaging for the diagnosis of peripheral artery disease (PAD). Our search was conducted in early April 2022 and included the databases Medline, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane, and others. Five articles were included in the final review. Of the five studies that used ocular imaging in PAD, two studies used retinal color fundus photography, one used optical coherence tomography (OCT), and two used optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) to assess the ocular changes in PAD. PAD was associated with both structural and functional changes in the retina. Structural alterations around the optic disc and temporal retinal vascular arcades were seen in color fundus photography of patients with PAD compared to healthy individuals. The presence of retinal hemorrhages, exudates, and microaneurysms in color fundus photography was associated with an increased future risk of PAD, especially the severe form of the disease. The retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) was significantly thinner in the nasal quadrant in patients with PAD compared to age-matched healthy individuals in OCT. Similarly, the choroidal thickness in the subfoveal region was significantly thinner in patients with PAD compared to controls. Patients with PAD also had a significant reduction in the retinal and choroidal circulation in OCTA compared to healthy controls. As PAD causes thinning and ischemic changes in retinal vessels, examination of the retinal vessels using retinal imaging techniques can provide useful information about early microvascular damage in PAD. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) ranks third among the most common causes of blindness. As the most conventional and direct method for identifying AMD, color fundus photography has become prominent owing to its consistency, ease of use, and good quality in extensive clinical practice. In this study, a convolutional neural network (CSPDarknet53) was combined with a transformer to construct a new hybrid model, HCSP-Net. This hybrid model was employed to tri-classify color fundus photography into the normal macula (NM), dry macular degeneration (DMD), and wet macular degeneration (WMD) based on clinical classification manifestations, thus identifying and resolving AMD as early as possible with color fundus photography. To further enhance the performance of this model, grouped convolution was introduced in this study without significantly increasing the number of parameters. HCSP-Net was validated using an independent test set. The average precision of HCSPNet in the diagnosis of AMD was 99.2%, the recall rate was 98.2%, the F1-Score was 98.7%, the PPV (positive predictive value) was 99.2%, and theNPV (negative predictive value)was 99.6%.Moreover, a knowledge distillation approach was also adopted to develop a lightweight student network (SCSP-Net). The experimental results revealed a noteworthy enhancement in the accuracy of SCSP-Net, rising from 94% to 97%, while remarkably reducing the parameter count to a quarter of HCSP-Net. This attribute positions SCSP-Net as a highly suitable candidate for the deployment of resource-constrained devices, which may provide ophthalmologists with an efficient tool for diagnosing AMD. Purpose: To evaluate the clinical characteristics of congenital rubella retinopathy (CRR) with modern fundus imaging. Methods: Single-center case series. Eleven patients (2005–2020) at the Emory Eye Center with known or presumed CRR. Trained image readers reviewed fundus imaging (color fundus photography, widefield pseudocolor imaging, near-infrared reflectance imaging, autofluorescence imaging, and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography) for pre-specified features suggestive of CRR. Results: Eleven patients with confirmed (63.6%) or presumed (36.3%) CRR were identified. All were female with median (range) age of 53 (35–67) years. Six (54.5%) were born during the 1964–1965 United States rubella epidemic. All had congenital hearing loss. Two (18.2%) had a congenital heart defect. Eleven (50.0%) eyes had salt-and-pepper retinal pigmentary changes. Twenty-two eyes (100.0%) had irregularly distributed regions of speckled hypoautofluorescence. One eye (4.5%) had a presumed macular neovascularization. Conclusion: Modern fundus imaging demonstrates characteristic features of CRR, even when pigmentary changes are not readily apparent on examination. Widefield autofluorescence findings of irregularly distributed speckled hypoautofluorescence are particularly revealing. This series of newly diagnosed adults with CRR may represent the milder end of the phenotypic spectrum of this condition, highlighting imaging findings that may aid in diagnostically challenging cases of CRR. Purpose: To assess retinal function in areas of presumed fibrosis due to neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), using multimodal imaging and structure-function correlation. Design: Cross-sectional observational study. Methods: 30 eyes of 30 consecutive patients with nAMD with a minimum history of one year of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy were included. Each patient underwent microperimetry (MP), color fundus photography (CFP), standard spectral-domain-based OCT (SD-OCT), and polarization sensitive-OCT (PS-OCT) imaging. PS-OCT technology can depict retinal fibrosis based on its birefringence. CFP, SD-OCT, and PS-OCT were evaluated independently for the presence of fibrosis at the corresponding MP stimuli locations. MP results and morphologic findings in CFP, SD-OCT, and PS-OCT were co-registered and analyzed using mixed linear models. Results: In total, 1350 MP locations were evaluated to assess the functional impact of fibrosis according to a standardized protocol. The estimated means of retinal areas with signs of fibrosis were 12.60 db (95% confidence interval: 10.44–14.76) in CFP, 11.60 db (95% COI: 8.84–14.36) in OCT, and 11.02 db (95% COI 8.10–13.94) in PS-OCT. Areas evaluated as subretinal fibrosis in three (7.2 db) or two (10.1 db) modalities were significantly correlated with a lower retinal sensitivity than a subretinal fibrosis observed in only one (15.3 db) or none (23.3 db) modality (p < 0.001). Conclusions: CFP, SD-OCT and PS-OCT are all suited to detect areas of reduced retinal sensitivity related to fibrosis, however, a multimodal imaging approach provides higher accuracy in the identification of areas with low sensitivity in MP (i.e., impaired retinal function), and thereby improves the detection rate of subretinal fibrosis in nAMD. Background: The epiretinal membrane (ERM) is a common retinal disorder characterized by abnormal fibrocellular tissue at the vitreomacular interface. Most patients with ERM are asymptomatic at early stages. Therefore, screening for ERM will become increasingly important. Despite the high prevalence of ERM, few deep learning studies have investigated ERM detection in the color fundus photography (CFP) domain. In this study, we built a generative model to enhance ERM detection performance in the CFP. Methods: This deep learning study retrospectively collected 302 ERM and 1,250 healthy CFP data points from a healthcare center. The generative model using StyleGAN2 was trained using single-center data. EfficientNetB0 with StyleGAN2-based augmentation was validated using independent internal single-center data and external datasets. We randomly assigned healthcare center data to the development (80%) and internal validation (20%) datasets. Data from two publicly accessible sources were used as external validation datasets. Results: StyleGAN2 facilitated realistic CFP synthesis with the characteristic cellophane reflex features of the ERM. The proposed method with StyleGAN2-based augmentation outperformed the typical transfer learning without a generative adversarial network. The proposed model achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUC) curve of 0.926 for internal validation. AUCs of 0.951 and 0.914 were obtained for the two external validation datasets. Compared with the deep learning model without augmentation, StyleGAN2-based augmentation improved the detection performance and contributed to the focus on the location of the ERM. Conclusions: We proposed an ERM detection model by synthesizing realistic CFP images with the pathological features of ERM through generative deep learning. Purpose: To describe the association of serous maculopathy with absence of retinal pigment epithelium (SMARPE) and large drusen in patients with non-neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Methods: A retrospective study of ophthalmic examination and multimodal imaging data of individuals with SMARPE and large drusen observed over a period of 12-month was accomplished. SMARPE was defined as subretinal accumulation of fluid within the macular area due to retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) aperture. Large drusen were identified by the presence of sub-RPE deposits using multimodal imaging analysis (color fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence, and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography). Results: Twelve eyes of 7 white patients with a mean age of 77 years were observed to have SMARPE associated with large drusen. The median visual acuity was 20/100. Bilateral SMARPE lesions were observed in 71% of study patients. All SMARPE lesions were hypoautofluorescent, located in the subretinal space between the RPE and the ellipsoid zone, and presented as complete or incomplete RPE apertures associated with subretinal fluid. The SMARPE in this study had coincident multimodal imaging features as the SMARPE described in other reports in the literature. Conclusions: Bilateral SMARPE can occur in association with typical AMD large drusen. Background: Torpedo maculopathy (TM) is a rare, congenital condition characterized by an oval-shaped, chorioretinal lesion in the temporal macula of unknown etiology. To our knowledge, the longest reported follow-up of TM is 5 years. Herein we report 10 years of follow-up on two patients with TM to further characterize the long-term natural history of the condition. Case reports: Two patients with torpedo maculopathy were examined at baseline and then again at 5 years and 10 years from baseline. Eyes were evaluated using color fundus photography, automated perimetry, fundus autofluorescence and spectral domain optical coherence tomography. Visual function of both patients remained stable throughout the observation period. In case 1, there was no evidence of change in lesion morphology over the 10 year observation period. Case 2 showed progression of cystic degeneration of the neurosensory retina within the torpedo lesion. Case 1 reported a history of supernumerary teeth and underwent gene sequence with deletion/duplication analyses of the APC gene but no clinically significant variants were detected. Conclusions: Our findings support the position that TM is a nonprogressive condition with long-term stability of visual function. Objective: To evaluate the performance of two lightweight neural network models in the diagnosis of common fundus diseases and make comparison to another two classical models. Methods: A total of 16,000 color fundus photography were collected, including 2000 each of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy (DR), high myopia, central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), age-related macular degeneration (AMD), optic neuropathy, and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), in addition to 2000 normal fundus. Fundus photography was obtained from patients or physical examiners who visited the Ophthalmology Department of Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University. Each fundus photography has been diagnosed and labeled by two professional ophthalmologists. Two classical classification models (ResNet152 and DenseNet121), and two lightweight classification models (MobileNetV3 and ShufflenetV2), were trained. Area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were used to evaluate the performance of the four models. Results: Compared with the classical classification model, the total size and number of parameters of the two lightweight classification models were significantly reduced, and the classification speed was sharply improved. Compared with the DenseNet121 model, the ShufflenetV2 model took 50.7% less time to make a diagnosis on a fundus photography. The classical models performed better than lightweight classification models, and Densenet121 showed highest AUC in five out of the seven common fundus diseases. However, the performance of lightweight classification models is satisfying. The AUCs using MobileNetV3 model to diagnose AMD, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, CRVO, high myopia, optic atrophy, and CSC were 0.805, 0.892, 0.866, 0.812, 0.887, 0.868, and 0.803, respectively. For ShufflenetV2model, the AUCs for the above seven diseases were 0.856, 0.893, 0.855, 0.884, 0.891, 0.867, and 0.844, respectively. Conclusion: The training of light-weight neural network models based on color fundus photography for the diagnosis of common fundus diseases is not only fast but also has a significant reduction in storage size and parameter number compared with the classical classification model, and can achieve satisfactory accuracy. Early detection and timely cure of ocular disease play a vital role to avoid irreversible vision issues in daily life. The technique fundus assessment utilizes color fundus photography, which is a very effective tool though it is expensive. Since rare symptoms of the disease are detected at the initial stage of the disease, still automated and optimized models are in urgent need for the detection of the ocular disease. Additionally, existing systems focus on image-level detection for the treatment of eyes without association employing the left and right eye information. Although they concentrate only on one or two features of the ocular disease at a time. Taking into consideration severity detection and multilabel categorization plays a vital role in ocular disease detection. So, we develop a framework to detect the disease in the early phase. And then apply the classification model for the multilabel classification of the disease. our proposed experimental result proves that the proposed Custom net model provides 99.15% of accuracy compared to the existing baseline model such as Vgg16, 19, Resnet-50 and Inception V3. Purpose: In a previous cross-sectional study, we reported that the sexes can be distinguished using known factors obtained from color fundus photography (CFP). However, it is not clear how sex differences in fundus parameters appear across the human lifespan. Therefore, we conducted a cohort study to investigate sex determination based on fundus parameters in elementary school students. Methods: This prospective observational longitudinal study investigated 109 right eyes of elementary school students over 4 years (age, 8.5 to 11.5 years). From each CFP, the tessellation fundus index was calculated as red/red + green + blue (R/[R+G+B]) using the mean value of red-green-blue intensity in eight locations around the optic disc and macular region. Optic disc area, ovality ratio, papillomacular angle, and retinal vessel angles and distances were quantified according to the data in our previous report. Using 54 fundus parameters, sex was predicted by L2 regularized binomial logistic regression for each grade. Results: The right eyes of 53 boys and 56 girls were analyzed. The discrimination accuracy rate significantly increased with age: 56.3% at 8.5 years, 46.1% at 9.5 years, 65.5% at 10.5 years and 73.1% at 11.5 years. Introduction: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that occurs in patients over 50 years old. Early diagnosis enables timely treatment to stabilize disease progression. However, the fact that the disease is asymptomatic in its early stages can delay treatment until it progresses. As such, screening in specific contexts can be an early detection tool to reduce the clinical and social impact of the disease. Objective: Assess the effectiveness of screening methods for early detection of AMD in adults aged 50 years or older. Methods: A systematic review of comparative observational studies on AMD screening methods in those aged 50 years or older, compared with no screening or any other strategy. A literature search was conducted in the MEDLINE (via PubMed), Embase, Cochrane Library and Lilacs database. Results: A total of 5,290 studies were identified, three of which met the inclusion criteria and were selected for the systematic review. A total of 8,733 individuals (16,780 eyes) were included in the analysis. The screening methods assessed were based on optical coherence tomography (OCT) compared with color fundus photography, and OCT and telemedicine testing compared to a standard eye exam. Conclusion: The systematized data are limited and only suggest satisfactory performance in early screening of the population at risk of developing AMD. OCT and the telemedicine technique showed promising results in AMD screening. However, methodological problems were identified in the studies selected and the level of evidence was considered low. Purpose: To investigate patterns of ancillary imaging testing among vitreoretinal specialists for patients with vitreoretinal disease in the United States (US).Methods: Optical coherence tomography (OCT), color fundus photography (CFP), and fluorescein angiography (FA), ordered by vitreoretinal specialists and documented within the American Academy of Ophthalmology IRIS® Registry (Intelligent Research in Sight) between 01 January 2018 and 31 December 2020, were retrospectively assessed. Trends in imaging modality choice were analyzed by payer type, geographic region, and practice type. Sub-analyses were conducted according to categorization of vitreoretinal specialists into those treating a high versus low volume of patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).Results: OCT was the most common imaging modality used, followed by CFP and FA. Following normalization, the highest volume of OCT procedures performed were identified among Medicare Advantage and Medicare Fee-for-Service beneficiaries, within the South of the US, and at medium and large practices. Minimal differences were observed for CFP and FA volume across payer types and regions. Across practice types, the largest volume of CFP and FA procedures were identified in small and private equity owned practices, respectively. Vitreoretinal specialists with a high nAMD volume more frequently performed OCT than those with a low nAMD volume.Conclusion: Vitreoretinal specialists demonstrated a strong preference for OCT, with real-world associations according to payer type, geographic location, and practice type. Color signals play an important role in intraspecific communication and are well studied in catarrhine primates, which exhibit uniform trichromatic vision that is well suited to detecting such signals. Platyrrhine primates exhibit polymorphic color vision with different individuals possessing different color vision types in most species. Intriguingly, some platyrrhine species exhibit bare faces, which are convergent with those of catarrhines. However, putative functions of bare‐faced color signals in platyrrhines remain largely unexplored. We measured facial skin color of five captive golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia) using color‐calibrated digital photography and modeled these colors to the visual systems of the species. Our results show that facial coloration is different between infant and older adults and varies across reproductive condition, but not between breeding and nonbreeding adults. While preliminary, our study suggests that facial coloration may be involved in sociosexual signaling in golden lion tamarins, and provides intriguing evidence that we hope might stimulate more studies of bare‐faced signaling in platyrrhines. Ocular diseases are a prevalent disease among the aging population across the world. The retinal damage and vision loss can be substantially decreased through early-stage diagnosis with computer-aided ocular disease diagnosis. With the use of color fundus photography for obtaining digital retinal fundus images, there is a growth in the online accessibility of digital fundus images. For diagnosing ocular diseases, an attempt was made to model graphs from images for feature learning. Three feature detection algorithms, namely scale-invariant feature transform, binary robust invariant scalable keypoints and oriented fast and rotated BRIEF (ORB) techniques are computed individually. As graphs are represented in the non-Euclidean domain, the graph neural network is used to learn the node embedding to model the network for ocular disease diagnosis. Three distance measures: the Euclidean, Manhattan and Chebyshev distances, are computed for analyzing the discriminative power of the model. The proposed RDD-Net model is trained and evaluated on the ODIR-2019 dataset with eleven different performance indicators. The results show that mapping images to non-Euclidean geometric space have obtained a successful diagnosis of ocular diseases from digital fundus images. The ORB descriptor outperforms the other two feature descriptors as well as the existing algorithms for ocular disease diagnosis. Results of the Chebyshev distance measure show superior performance when compared to the other two distance measures based on computation time and performance evaluation metrics. Purpose: To assess the capillary non-perfusion in different concentric sectors on widefield optical coherence tomography angiography (WF-OCTA) and to correlate the ratio of non-perfusion (RNP) to the severity of sickle cell retinopathy (SCR). Methods: This retrospective, cross-sectional study included eyes of patients with various sickle cell disease (SCD) genotypes having undergone WF-OCTA and ultra-widefield color fundus photography (UWF-CFP). Eyes were grouped as no SCR, non-proliferative SCR or proliferative SCR. RNP was assessed on WF-OCTA montage in different field-of-view (FOV) sectors centered on the fovea: 0–10-degrees circle excluding the foveal avascular zone, the 10–30-degrees circle excluding the optic nerve, the 30–60-degrees circle, and the full 60-degrees circle. Results: Forty-two eyes of twenty-eight patients were included. Within each SCR group, mean RNP of the FOV 30–60 sector was higher than all other sectors (p < 0.05). Mean RNP of all sectors were significatively different between no SCR group and proliferative SCR group (p < 0.05). To distinguish no SCR versus non-proliferative SCR FOV 30–60 had a good sensitivity and specificity of 41.67% and 93.33%, respectively (cutoff RNP > 22.72%, AUC = 0.75, 95% CI 0.56–0.94, p = 0.028). To differentiate non-proliferative versus proliferative SCR, FOV 0–10 had good sensitivity and specificity of 33.33% and 91.67%, respectively (cutoff RNP > 18.09, AUC = 0.73, 95% CI 0.53 to 0.93, p = 0.041). To discern no SCR versus proliferative SCR, all sectors had optimal sensitivity and specificity (p < 0.05). Conclusion: WF OCTA-based RNP provides non-invasive diagnostic information regarding the presence and severity of SCR, and correlates with disease stage in certain FOV sectors. Purpose: To compare drusen size metrics (apical height and basal width) on optical coherence tomography (OCT) B-scans with their size assessed on color photos in eyes with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and normal aging. Methods: A total of 508 drusen were evaluated in this analysis. Flash color fundus photos (CFP), infrared reflectance (IR) images, and OCT B-scans obtained at the same visit were evaluated. Individual drusen were identified on CFPs and the diameters of the drusen were measured in planimetric grading software. CFPs were manually registered to the IR image with their corresponding OCT volume. After confirming correspondence between the CFP and OCT, the apical height and basal width of the same drusen were measured on OCT B-scans. Results: Drusen were divided into small, medium, large, and very large categories based on their diameter on the CFP images (< 63, 63 to 124, 125 to 249, and ≥ 250 μm, respectively). The OCT apical height of small drusen on CFP ranged from 20 to 31 μm, while medium drusen ranged from 31 to 46 μm, large drusen ranged from 45 μm to 111 µm, and very large drusen ranged from 55 μm to 208 μm. The OCT basal width measured < 99 μm in small drusen, from 99 to 143 μm in medium drusen, from 141 to 407 µm in large drusen, and > 209 µm in very large drusen. Conclusion: Drusen of different size categories on color photographs may also be separated according to their apical height and basal width on OCT. Cerebral embolization is a known complication of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) but the effect of the procedure on the ocular perfusion is currently unclear. Thus, we investigated post-procedural morphologic and perfusion changes of the retina and choroid, using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and color fundus photography (CFP) in a prospective cohort study. Ophthalmic examinations were conducted pre- and post-TAVI. OCTA images were analyzed quantitatively based on vessel density and skeleton density of the superficial and deep retinal plexus as well as the signal intensity and flow deficits in the choriocapillaris. CFP images were assessed for presence of acute retinal ischemia, optic nerve swelling, vessel emboli, hemorrhages and cotton wool spots. Data was analyzed using linear mixed models. Twenty patients (9 women; 11 men) at a mean age of 81 ± 6 years were included. Pre- and post-interventional ocular imaging data were available for 32 eyes. The analysis revealed a significant impairment of the choriocapillaris perfusion after TAVI with an increased proportion of flow deficits (p = 0.044). When controlling for blood pressure, the average size of choriocapillaris flow voids was significantly increased (systolic and diastolic, p = 0.039 and 0.029). Qualitatively, focal areas of retinal ischemia were detected on OCTA in 33% of participants. Silent emboli or cotton wool spots were identified on CFP in 21%. Our findings indicate a reduced choroidal perfusion as well as areas of retinal ischemia and embolization in a considerable proportion of patients following TAVI. Purpose: To evaluate the agreement between conventional fundus photography (CFP) and multicolor fundus imaging (MFI) for the detection of lesions of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and retinal vein occlusion (RVO).Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of eyes with DR or RVO who underwent CFP and MFI. All images were independently analyzed by two observers (O1 and O2), and the evaluated lesions were classified as "present" or "absent". Then, a paired comparison between both exams of the same eye was performed, to assess which made it easier to detect the lesions.Results: Considering DR, the agreement was substantial for cotton wool spots and photocoagulation scars for both observers (O1: κ=0.75 and κ=0.67; O2: κ=0.71 and κ=0.64, respectively) and for hard exudates for O1 (κ=0.80). These lesions were detected more frequently on MFI. Regarding RVO, the agreement was considered substantial for venous sheathing by O1 (κ=0.64) and moderate for optociliary shunts by O2 (κ=0.60). Optociliary shunts were detected more frequently in CPF by both observers and venous sheathing on MFI by O1. For microaneurysms, retinal hemorrhages, retinal neovascularization, and proliferative membranes, in DR, and retinal hemorrhages, venous engorgement, and retinal neovascularization in RVO, the agreement was almost perfect (κ 0.82). In the paired analysis, both observers considered that, in DR, microaneurysms and retinal hemorrhages were easier to detect on CFP and that retinal neovascularization, cotton wool spots, and photocoagulation scars were easier to identify on MFI. Regarding RVO, optocilliary shunts were easier to identify on CFP and venous engorgement on MFI.Conclusion: The agreement of MFI and CFP was substantial to almost perfect for most lesions.
