We present a study of molecular structures (clumps and clouds) in the dwarf galaxy NGC 404 using high-resolution (≈ 0.86 × 0.51 pc2 ) Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array 12CO(2-1) observations. We find two distinct regions in NGC 404: a gravitationally-stable central region (Toomre parameter 𝑄 = 3 − 30) and a gravitationally-unstable molecular ring (𝑄 ≲ 1). The molecular structures in the central region have a steeper size – linewidth relation and larger virial parameters than those in the molecular ring, suggesting gas is more turbulent in the former. In the molecular ring, clumps exhibit a shallower mass – size relation and larger virial parameters than clouds, implying density structures and dynamics are regulated by different physical mechanisms at different spatial scales. We construct an analytical model of clump-clump collisions to explain the results in the molecular ring. We propose that clumpclump collisions are driven by gravitational instabilities coupled with galactic shear, that lead to a population of clumps whose accumulation lengths (i.e. average separations) are approximately equal to their tidal radii. Our model-predicted clump masses and sizes (and mass – size relation) and turbulence energy injection rates (and size – linewidth relation) match the observations in the molecular ring very well, suggesting clump-clump collisions is the main mechanism regulating clump properties and gas turbulence in that region. As expected, our collision model does not apply to the central region, where turbulence is likely driven by clump migration.

This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 survey that publicly releases infrared spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the subsurvey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey subsurvey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated value-added catalogs. This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. SDSS continues into its fifth phase with observations already underway for the Milky Way Mapper, Local Volume Mapper, and Black Hole Mapper surveys.

MPI_AGE is a European Union co-funded research project aimed to use the Multidimensional Prognostic Index (MPI), a validated Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA)-based prognostic tool, to develop predictive rules that guide clinical and management decisions in older people in different European countries. A series of international studies performed in different settings have shown that the MPI is useful to predict mortality and risk of hospitalization in community-dwelling older subjects at population level. Furthermore, studies performed in older people who underwent a CGA before admission to a nursing home or receiving homecare services showed that the MPI successfully identified groups of persons who could benefit, in terms of reduced mortality, of specific therapies such as statins in diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease, anticoagulants in atrial fibrillation and antidementia drugs in cognitive decline. A prospective trial carried out in nine hospitals in Europe and Australia demonstrated that the MPI was able to predict not only in-hospital and long-term mortality, but also institutionalization, re-hospitalization and receiving homecare services during the one-year follow-up after hospital discharge. The project also explored the association between MPI and mortality in hospitalized older patients in need of complex procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation or enteral tube feeding. Evidence from these studies has prompted the MPI_AGE Investigators to formulate recommendations for healthcare providers, policy makers and the general population which may help to improve the cost-effectiveness of appropriate health care interventions for older patients.

International audience; Chapter 4 presents an overview of the various regulatory and legal frameworks around self-employed workers, the main institutional arrangements and a state of the art examination of social dialogue in each country case study. Nine European countries are covered (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the UK), embodying different welfare state regimes and diverse models of labour market and profession regulation. The country studies present the same structure, which includes an analysis of the institutional framework, the public policies supporting self-employment and the emergent and innovative strategies of collective representation. The picture that emerges from the country studies is small reforms at the margin and great fragmentation of the measures implemented, accompanied by institutional experimentalism and some innovative strategies of collective representation, carried out by new actors in the industrial relations arena.

We construct Tully-Fisher relations (TFRs), from large samples of galaxies with spatially-resolved H$\alpha$ emission maps from the K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) Redshift One Spectroscopic Survey (KROSS) at $z\approx1$. We compare these to data from the Sydney-Australian-Astronomical-Observatory Multi-object Integral-Field Spectrograph (SAMI) Galaxy Survey at $z\approx0$. We stringently match the data quality of the latter to the former, and apply identical analysis methods and sub-sample selection criteria to both to conduct a direct comparison of the absolute $K$-band magnitude and stellar mass TFRs at $z\approx1$ and $z\approx0$. We find that matching the quality of the SAMI data to that of KROSS results in TFRs that differ significantly in slope, zero-point and (sometimes) scatter in comparison to the corresponding original SAMI relations. These differences are in every case as large or larger than the differences between the KROSS $z\approx1$ and matched SAMI $z\approx0$ relations. Accounting for these differences, we compare the TFRs at $z\approx1$ and $z\approx0$. For disk-like, star-forming galaxies we find no significant difference in the TFR zero-points between the two epochs. This suggests the growth of stellar mass and dark matter in these types of galaxies is intimately linked over this $\approx8$ Gyr period., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

International audience; BACKGROUND: Pesticides exposures could be implicated in the excess of Central Nervous System (CNS) tumors observed in farmers, but evidence concerning individual pesticides remains limited. Carbamate derivative pesticides, including herbicides and fungicides (i.e. (thio/dithio)-carbamates), have shown evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental studies in animals. In the French AGRICAN cohort, we assessed the associations between potential exposures to carbamate herbicides and fungicides and the incidence of CNS tumors, overall and by histological subtype.METHODS: AGRICAN enrolled 181,842 participants involved in agriculture. Incident CNS tumors were identified by linkage with cancer registries from enrollment (2005-2007) until 2013. Individual exposures were assessed by combining information on lifetime periods of pesticide use on crops and the French crop-exposure matrix PESTIMAT, for each of the 14 carbamate and thiocarbamate herbicides and the 16 carbamate and dithiocarbamate fungicides registered in France since 1950. Associations were estimated using proportional hazard models with age as the underlying timescale, adjusting for gender, educational level and smoking. RESULTS: During an average follow-up of 6.9years, 381 incident cases of CNS tumors occurred, including 164 gliomas and 134 meningiomas. Analyses showed increased risks of CNS tumors with overall exposure to carbamate fungicides (Hazard Ratio, HR=1.88; 95% CI: 1.27-2.79) and, to a lesser extent, to carbamate herbicides (HR=1.44; 95% CI: 0.94-2.22). Positive associations were observed with specific carbamates, including some fungicides (mancozeb, maneb, metiram) and herbicides (chlorpropham, propham, diallate) already suspected of being carcinogens in humans.CONCLUSIONS: Although some associations need to be corroborate in further studies and should be interpreted cautiously, these findings provide additional carcinogenicity evidence for several carbamate fungicides and herbicides.

Galaxy formation theories struggle to explain the role of Black Hole accretion in shaping galaxies over cosmic time. Radio feedback, associated to radio jets, is accepted as a fundamental component of the lifecycle of the most massive radio loud early-type galaxies (Radio Loud ETGs, i.e. Radio Galaxies, RGs), at least in the late stages of cosmic evolution (z < 1). The many details of such process, however, still remain poorly understood. It is generally accepted that High Excitation Radio Galaxies (HERGs) are triggered by cold gas transported to the center through merging or collisions with gas-rich galaxies, while accretion in Low Excitation Radio Galaxies (LERGs) may occur directly from the hot phase of the IGM. The most compelling evidence that cold gas can play a role in fuelling LERGs as well, is that in such systems dust and molecular gas are detected in larger quantities than in radio-quiet ETGs. The origin of this gas (external or secular) remains still unclear. Systematic high-resolution CO imaging of radio galaxies (in which radio jets are currently active) together with kinematic information on the stellar and ionized gas components, is fundamental to isolate the role played by radio-mode feedback in the overall formation and evolution of ETGs, allowing also to do a crucial comparison with existing studies of radio-quiet ETGs (e.g. ATLAS3D sample). For this purpose, we have selected a complete volume-limited sample of eleven nearby (z < 0.03) RGs associated with elliptical galaxies, selected from the Ekers et al. (1989) parent sample of 90 radio galaxies in the Southern sky. All the selected galaxies have low-power (P1.4GHz ≤ 1025 W Hz−1), low accretion rate, and FRI type or (arcsec-scale) compact radio morphology. For all the sources, we have already acquired a set of multi-wavelength data, spanning from the radio to the mm regime. Here we present the results obtained so far by analyzing ALMA Cycle 3 CO(2-1) observations of 9 targets, with resolutions of few hundreds of parsecs at the source redshifts. The CO(2-1) line emission was detected in 6 out of 9 targets (detection significance from 8 to 45 sigma; 66% detection rate). CO(2-1) maps show rotating disc structures in all the sources, with some peculiar cases in which the gas disk shows a disturbed morphology that seems to suggest an interaction with the radio jets. The detected CO discs are mostly located in the inner kpc-sub-kpc scales of the host galaxy. Available optical images were used to investigate the relative distribution of gas and dust: they result mostly co-spatial, with dust extending on larger scales in some cases. The study of the CO kinematics is still ongoing, but preliminary results show hints of the presence of of non-circular motions (i.e. inflow/outflow) in at least one of the detected CO discs.&nbsp

International audience; La France, dont la moitié du territoire est dédiée à l'agriculture, se situe au premier rang européen des utilisateurs de produits de protection des plantes (PPP). La question des PPP sur la santé est un sujet de préoccupation croissante pour les professionnels agricoles, qui sont plus d'1 millions à être au contact direct ou indirect de pesticides, mais également du point de vue environnemental. En effet, s'ils ont permis un grand progrès en augmentant les rendements de la production alimentaire, leurs conséquences sur l'environnement ou la santé humaine sont désormais avérées. Le projet pluridisciplinaire CANEPA constitue une opportunité unique de rassembler les thématiques Environnement et Santé autour de la question des impacts liés à l'exposition aux pesticides. Il se propose de comprendre les déterminants de la contamination des travailleurs agricoles et des écosystèmes et d'envisager comment une réduction des usages des produits phytosanitaires est susceptible de s'accompagner à la fois d'une diminution de l'impact sur les écosystèmes et d'une réduction des expositions des travailleurs. Pour cela, l'étude CANEPA a été menée sur deux années consécutives (2016-2017) dans le but de renseigner les expositions des personnes travaillant dans les vergers de pommiers. Au total, plus de 150 observations ont été effectuées sur le terrain (31 observations de traitement, 66 observations de réentrées et 51 récoltes) dans 30 exploitations agricoles sur trois zones de production (Normandie, Rhône-Alpes et Sud-Ouest). L'exposition professionnelle a été étudiée par la pose de patches (au nombre de 11) au contact de la peau et par l'utilisation de gants en coton pour les mains, afin de recueillir les expositions cutanées des travailleurs en condition normale de travail. Pour les traitements, des pompes ont été placées pour collecter les expositions respiratoires. Au total, plus de 3000 patches ont été collectés au cours de ces deux années d'étude. Des vidéos ont été prises pour chaque observation afin de renseigner au mieux les sources d'expositions. En parallèle, un volet agronomique a été mis en place à l'aide d'enquêtes auprès des pomiculteurs, d'organismes professionnels et de centres techniques expérimentaux, afin de connaître les systèmes de production, les pratiques culturales et les règles de décision en matière de protection phytosanitaire du verger. Les sources potentielles d'exposition ont été recherchées par le prélèvement de nombreux échantillons. Les résidus de pesticides à la surface des pommes et des feuilles ont été déterminés. Des prélèvements à l'aide de lingettes ont également été effectués pour échantillonner le matériel manipulé par les travailleurs. Enfin, des préleveurs atmosphériques bas-débits ont été utilisés pour contrôler la qualité de l'air à l'intérieur de la salle de préparation de pesticides et à l'intérieur de la cabine du tracteur. La contamination environnementale a également été étudiée par la mise en place d'échantillonneurs passifs atmosphériques et aquatiques (périodicité mensuelle) et par des prélèvements ponctuels d'eaux et de sols. Enfin, des échantillons d'urine et des mèches de cheveux ont été collectés en tant que témoin d'exposition. L'analyse des échantillons par des nouvelles méthodologies analytiques très sensibles, développées au laboratoire, permettra de mettre en évidence les quantités de PPPs sur les différents échantillons collectés (principalement Captane et Dithianon qui sont les deux fongicides les plus utilisés contre la tavelure en vergers de pommiers). Le but in fine est de mieux comprendre les déterminants de la contamination des travailleurs et des écosystèmes et de proposer des mesures concrètes aux agriculteurs pour une réduction de leur exposition aux PPPs. Les indicateurs d'exposition élaborés au cours de ce projet seront utiles pour les futures études épidémiologiques.

We use the Spectrographic Areal Unit for Research on Optical Nebulae and Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph integral-field spectrographs to observe the active galactic nucleus (AGN) powered outflow in NGC1266. This unusual galaxy is relatively nearby (D = 30Mpc), allowing us to investigate the process of AGN feedback in action. We present maps of the kinematics and line strengths of the ionized gas emission lines Hα, Hβ, [Oiii], [Oi], [Nii] and [Sii], and report on the detection of sodium D absorption. We use these tracers to explore the structure of the source, derive the ionized and atomic gas kinematics, and investigate the gas excitation and physical conditions. NGC1266 contains two ionized gas components along most lines of sight, tracing the ongoing outflow and a component closer to the galaxy systemic, the origin of which is unclear. This gas appears to be disturbed by a nascent AGN jet. We confirm that the outflow in NGC1266 is truly multiphase, containing radio plasma, atomic, molecular and ionized gas and X-ray emitting plasma. The outflow has velocities of up to ±900 km s -1 away from the systemic velocity and is very likely to remove significant amount of cold gas from the galaxy. The low-ionization nuclear emission region-like line emission in NGC1266 is extended, and it likely arises from fast shocks caused by the interaction of the radio jet with the interstellar medium. These shocks have velocities of up to 800 km s -1, which match well with the observed velocity of the outflow. Sodium D equivalent width profiles are used to set constraints on the size and orientation of the outflow. The ionized gas morphology correlates with the nascent radio jets observed in 1.4 and 5 GHz continuum emission, supporting the suggestion that an AGN jet is providing the energy required to drive the outflow. © 2012 The Authors Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society © 2012 RAS.

Surveying 18 12CO-bright galaxies from the ATLAS 3D early-type galaxy sample with the Institut de Radio Astronomie Millimétrique (IRAM) 30-m telescope, we detect 13CO(1-0) and 13CO(2-1) in all 18 galaxies, HCN(1-0) in 12/18 and HCO +(1-0) in 10/18. We find that the line ratios 12CO(1-0)/ 13CO(1-0) and 12CO(1-0)/HCN(1-0) are clearly correlated with several galaxy properties: total stellar mass, luminosity-weighted mean stellar age, molecular-to-atomic gas ratio, dust temperature and dust morphology. We suggest that these correlations are primarily governed by the optical depth in the 12CO lines; interacting, accreting and/or starbursting early-type galaxies have more optically thin molecular gas while those with settled dust and gas discs host optically thick molecular gas. The ranges of the integrated line intensity ratios generally overlap with those of spirals, although we note some outliers in the 12CO(1-0)/ 13CO(1-0), 12CO(2-1)/ 13CO(2-1) and HCN/HCO +(1-0) ratios. In particular, three galaxies are found to have very low 12CO(1-0)/ 13CO(1-0) and 12CO(2-1)/ 13CO(2-1) ratios. Such low ratios may signal particularly stable molecular gas which creates stars less efficiently than 'normal' (i.e. below Schmidt-Kennicutt prediction), consistent with the low dust temperatures seen in these galaxies. © 2012 The Authors Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society © 2012 RAS.

A summary of the SAURON project and its current status is presented. SAURON is a panoramic integral-field spectrograph designed to study the stellar kinematics, gaseous kinematics, and stellar populations of spheroids. Here, the sample of galaxies and its properties are described. The instrument is detailed and its capabilities illustrated through observational examples. These includes results on the structure of central stellar disks, the kinematics and ionization state of gaseous disks, and the stellar populations of galaxies with decoupled cores., 10 pages, 6 figures. The ATLAS3D project is a multiwavelength survey combined with a theoretical modelling effort. The observations span from the radio to the millimetre and optical, and provide multicolour imaging, two-dimensional kinematics of the atomic (Hi), molecular (CO) and ionized gas (Hβ, [Oiii] and [Ni]), together with the kinematics and population of the stars (Hβ, Fe5015 and Mg b), for a carefully selected, volume-limited (1.16 × 105Mpc3) sample of 260 early-type (elliptical E and lenticular S0) galaxies (ETGs). The models include semi-analytic, N-body binary mergers and cosmological simulations of galaxy formation. Here we present the science goals for the project and introduce the galaxy sample and the selection criteria. The sample consists of nearby (D < 42Mpc, |δ- 29°| < 35°, |b| > 15°) morphologically selected ETGs extracted from a parent sample of 871 galaxies (8 per cent E, 22 per cent S0 and 70 per cent spirals) brighter than MK < -21.5mag (stellar mass M{black star}≳ 6 ×109M⊙). We analyse possible selection biases and we conclude that the parent sample is essentially complete and statistically representative of the nearby galaxy population. We present the size-luminosity relation for the spirals and ETGs and show that the ETGs in the ATLAS3D sample define a tight red sequence in a colour-magnitude diagram, with few objects in the transition from the blue cloud. We describe the strategy of the SAURON integral field observations and the extraction of the stellar kinematics with the ppxf method. We find typical 1σ errors of ΔV≈ 6kms-1, Δσ≈ 7kms-1, Δh3≈Δh4≈ 0.03 in the mean velocity, the velocity dispersion and Gauss-Hermite (GH) moments for galaxies with effective dispersion σe≳ 120kms-1. For galaxies with lower σe (≈40 per cent of the sample) the GH moments are gradually penalized by ppxf towards zero to suppress the noise produced by the spectral undersampling and only V and σ can be measured. We look at the morphology of fast and slow rotator early-type galaxies. Edge-on fast rotators are lenticular galaxies. They appear like spiral galaxies with the gas and dust removed, and in some cases are flat ellipticals with disky isophotes. Fast rotators are often barred and span the same full range of bulge fractions as spiral galaxies. The slow rotators are rounder and are generally consistent with being genuine, namely spheroidal-like, elliptical galaxies. We propose a revision to the tuning-fork diagram by Hubble as it gives a misleading description of ETGs. We study for the first time the kinematic morphology-density T-Sigma relation using fast and slow rotators to replace lenticulars and ellipticals. We find that our relation is cleaner than using classic morphology. Slow rotators are nearly absent at the lowest density environments [f(SR), 18 pages, 9 figures, LaTeX. The mass assembly of galaxies leaves imprints in their outskirts, such as shells and tidal tails. The frequency and properties of such fine structures depend on the main acting mechanisms - secular evolution, minor or major mergers - and on the age of the last substantial accretion event. We use this to constrain the mass assembly history of two apparently relaxed nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs) selected from the ATLAS3D sample, NGC 680 and 5557. Our ultra-deep optical images obtained with MegaCam on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope reach 29 magarcsec-2 in thegband. They reveal very low surface brightness (LSB) filamentary structures around these ellipticals. Among them, a gigantic 160kpc long, narrow, tail east of NGC 5557 hosts three gas-rich star-forming objects, previously detected in Hi with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and in UV withGALEX. NGC 680 exhibits two major diffuse plumes apparently connected to extended Hi tails, as well as a series of arcs and shells. Comparing the outer stellar and gaseous morphology of the two ellipticals with that predicted from models of colliding galaxies, we argue that the LSB features are tidal debris and that each of these two ETGs was assembled during a relatively recent, major wet merger, which most likely occurred after the redshiftz≃ 0.5 epoch. Had these mergers been older, the tidal features should have already fallen back or be destroyed by more recent accretion events. However, the absence of molecular gas and of a prominent young stellar population in the core region of the galaxies indicates that the merger is at least 1-2 Gyr old: the memory of any merger-triggered nuclear starburst has indeed been lost. The star-forming objects found towards the collisional debris of NGC 5557 are then likely tidal dwarf galaxies. Such recycled galaxies here appear to be long-lived and continue to form stars while any star formation activity has stopped in their parent galaxy. The inner kinematics of NGC 680 is typical for fast rotators which make the bulk of nearby ETGs in the ATLAS3D sample. On the other hand, NGC 5557 belongs to the poorly populated class of massive, round, slow rotators that are predicted by semi-analytic models and cosmological simulations to be the end-product of a complex mass accretion history, involving ancient major mergers and more recent minor mergers. Our observations suggest that under specific circumstances a single binary merger may dominate the formation history of such objects and thus that at least some massive ETGs may form at relatively low redshift. Whether the two galaxies studied here are representative of their own sub-class of ETGs is still an open question that will be addressed by an on-going deep optical survey of ATLAS3D galaxies. © 2011 The Authors Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society © 2011 RAS.
