Abstract

The emissions of Taylor cones from a wide range of ionic liquids (ILs) have been tested in vacuo in an attempt to identify what physical properties favor the purely ionic regime (PIR). This regime is well known in the case of Taylor cones of liquid metals. For nonmetallic liquids, it has been previously observed in conventional (capillary tube) electrospray sources at room temperature only for the room temperature molten salt (ionic liquid) EMI-BF4 (EMI=1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium). A large number of other ILs and their mixtures have been studied here, most of which (but not all) are unable to reach the PIR at room temperature. Based on these results and additional theoretical considerations, strong support is assembled for the notion that the PIR is favored by ILs not only of high electrical conductivity but also of high surface tension. This hypothesis is confirmed by tests with three recently synthesized ILs, EMI-GaCl4, EMI-C(CN)3, and EMI-N(CN)2, all of which combine exceptional surface tension and electrical conductivity, and all of which reach the PIR at room temperature far more readily than EMI-BF4.

Abstract

The conversion efficiency of ultra-thin solar cells based on layered materials has been limited by their open-circuit voltage, which is typically pinned to a value under 0.6 V. Here we report an open-circuit voltage of 1.02 V in a 120 nm-thick vertically stacked homojunction fabricated with substitutionally doped MoS2. This high open-circuit voltage is consistent with the band alignment in the MoS2 homojunction, which is more favourable than in widely-used TMDC heterostructures. It is also attributed to the high performance of the substitutionally doped MoS2, in particular the p-type material doped with Nb, which is demonstrated by the observation of electroluminescence from tunnelling graphene/BN/MoS2 structures in spite of the indirect nature of bulk MoS2. We find that illuminating the TMDC/metal contacts decreases the measured open-circuit voltage in MoS2 van der Waals homojunctions because they are photoactive, which points to the need of developing low-resistance, ohmic contacts to doped MoS2 in order to achieve high efficiency in practical devices. The high open-circuit voltage demonstrated here confirms the potential of layered transition-metal dichalcogenides for the development of highly efficient, ultra-thin solar cells.

The aim of this study was to assess self-reported menstrual alterations during the COVID-19 syndemic among women and people who menstruate aged 18– 55 in Spain.Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional online survey-based study was conducted (March–July 2021). Descriptive statistics were calculated and multivariate logistic regression models were constructed. This study was conducted as part of the “Equity and Menstrual Health in Spain” research project.Results: Among participants (N=17,455), 39.4% reported menstrual alterations since the start of the syndemic. Participants self-reporting long COVID-19 presented higher odds of menstrual alterations (aOR: 1.34, 95% CI, 1.15-1.57). In participants with no history of COVID-19, the risk for self-reported menstrual alterations was significantly higher based on employment situation, among participants experiencing financial issues (eg, financial issues always/many times < 12 months: aOR: 1.68, 95% CI, 1.48– 1.90), poorer self-perceived health (eg, poor: aOR: 2.00, 95% CI, 1.31– 3.07), and those diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (aOR: 1.13, 95% CI, 1.02– 1.26). Among participants with a self-reported COVID-19 diagnosis, factors that significantly increased the odds for menstrual alterations were experiencing financial strains (eg, financial issues always/many times < 12 months: aOR: 1.53, 95% CI, 1.09– 2.14), poorer self-perceived health (eg, poor: aOR: 3.09, 95% CI, 1.01– 9.52). Overall, factors that decreased the odds of reporting menstrual alterations included age > 25, being a carer, not having a gynecological condition and using hormonal contraception.Discussion and conclusions: Findings suggest an impact of the COVID-19 syndemic on menstrual patterns. Social inequities in reporting menstrual alterations were identified. While the risk of reporting menstrual alterations was higher among participants with long COVID-19, evidence is not conclusive. Abstract

Mycorrhizal symbioses are known to strongly influence plant performance, structure plant communities and shape ecosystem dynamics. Plant mycorrhizal traits, such as those characterizing mycorrhizal type (arbuscular (AM), ecto-, ericoid, or orchid mycorrhiza) and status (obligately (OM), facultatively (FM), or non-mycorrhizal) offer valuable insight into plant belowground functionality. Here, we compile available plant mycorrhizal trait information and global occurrence data (~100 million records) for 11,770 vascular plant species. Using a plant phylogenetic mega-tree and high-resolution climatic and edaphic data layers, we assess phylogenetic and environmental correlates of plant mycorrhizal traits. We find that plant mycorrhizal type is more phylogenetically conserved than plant mycorrhizal status, while environmental variables (both climatic and edaphic; notably soil texture) explain more variation in mycorrhizal status, especially FM. The previously underestimated role of environmental conditions has far-reaching implications for our understanding of ecosystem functioning under changing climatic and soil conditions.

Thus, this study aimed to assess the importance of blood-pressure-related risk indicators, cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), weight status, diabetes mellitus (DM), and lifestyle factors as predictors of stroke in different stages of life among non-hypertensive subjects.Materials and methods: This study was a long-term follow-up study including 33,254 men and 10,598 women from the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study (ACLS) who were 18–100 years old and did not have a HTN diagnosis at baseline. Variables: i) cognitive function measured by the Battery of General and Differential Aptitudes (BADyG); ii) birth weight, reported by parents; and iii) CRF (20-m shuttle run test). ANCOVA models were estimated to assess differences in cognitive function categories across birth weight and CRF categories. Mediation analysis was conducted with Hayes’ PROCESS macro.Results: CRF is a full mediator of the association between birth weight with the verbal and numerical factors, and general intelligence; and is a partial mediator when logical reasoning and the spatial factor were the dependent variables. The available data suggest that, in schoolchildren, the influence of birth weight on cognitive function is mediated by CRF.Conclusions: These findings highlight that children with lower birth weight values and lower fitness levels should be target subgroups to improve children’s cognition, in which long-life physical activity interventions at early ages are a priority.Keywords: birth weight, fitness, academic performance, cognition, children
