The measurements included depressive symptoms, appearance comparison, body appreciation, weight, and height. Multigroup path analysis was used to examine the moderated mediation model.Results: Compared with boys, adolescent girls presented greater levels of appearance, which increased with age. Body appreciation mediated the association between appearance comparison and depressive symptoms in girls, whereas appearance comparison directly correlated with depressive symptoms in boys. Body appreciation decreased with increasing BMI in boys but remained relatively stable in girls. Similar patterns were observed among junior and senior high school students.Conclusion: This study underscores the significant relationship between appearance comparison and adolescent depressive symptoms, suggesting varied mechanisms based on gender and BMI levels.Keywords: appearance comparison, body appreciation, adolescent depressive symptoms, gender difference, age group difference, body-mass index

Underweight or overweight in children and adolescents is a serious public health problem. Self-perception is an important factor in promoting health, especially during adolescence. The purpose of this study is to assess the characteristics of self-perception of children with low body weight, normal body weight, overweight and obesity. This study was conducted in Kharkiv secondary schools in November 2021. The total number of participants was 14,853, of which 8,290 were girls and 6,563 were boys, aged 10-17 years. Using an online questionnaire, adolescents indicated their body weight and height, and also assessed their own health preserving activities. Diagnosis of being underweight, overweight and obesity was carried out in accordance with World Health Organization (WHO) standards. Body self-esteem was assessed using the following questions: “What do you think about your body?”; “How satisfied are you with your health?”; “How satisfied are you with yourself?”; “How can you assess your own health?”. According to the results of the examination based on BMI, it was found that 63.1±2.4% of adolescents have normal body weight. Overweight was detected in 12.3±1.1%, obesity – in 2.4±0.5%. 17.4±1.3% of participants were underweight, and 4.8±0.7% had body mass deficit. By their own assessment, 75.0% of children considered themselves to have “normal” body weight, another 15.0% considered their weight “more than normal,” and about 10.0% of adolescents considered themselves “lean.” Among boys, 61.0% had normal body weight. About 16.5% of boys were considered overweight, and 3.8% of boys were obese. Insufficient body weight was found in 14.08% of respondents, and 4.6% had big body mass deficit. Among girls, the percentage of participants with normal body weight was 64.8%. 8.95% of participants were considered overweight, 1.35% were obese. Almost 20.0% were underweight; a large deficiency was detected in 5.0% of girls. In order to carry out health promotion activities among schoolchildren, the sexual characteristics of self-perception of one's own body and health problems among adolescents should be taken into account. Body mass index (BMI) is a modifiable risk factor for medical and infectious complications following total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). Previous studies investigating BMI were limited to the conventional classification system, which may be outdated for modern day patients. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify BMI thresholds that are associated with varying risk of 90-day medical complications and 2-year prosthetic joint infection (PJI) following TSA. A national database was utilized to identify 10,901 patients who underwent primary elective TSA from 2013 to 2022. Patients were only included if they had a BMI value recorded within 1 month prior to TSA. Separate stratum-specific likelihood ratio analyses, an adaptive technique to identify data-driven thresholds, were performed to determine data-driven BMI strata associated with varying risk of 90-day medical complications and 2-year PJI. The incidence rates of these complications were recorded for each stratum. To control for confounders, each BMI strata was propensity-score matched based on age, sex, hypertension, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diabetes mellitus to the lowest identified BMI strata for both outcomes of interest. The risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were recorded for each matched analysis. The average age and BMI of patients was 70.5 years (standard deviation ±9.8) and 30.7 (standard deviation ±6.2), respectively. Stratum-specific likelihood ratio analysis identified two BMI strata associated with differences in the rate of 2-year PJI: 19-39 and 40+. The same strata were identified for 90-day major complications. When compared to the matched BMI 19-39 cohort, the risk of 2-year PJI was higher in the BMI 40+ cohort (RR: 2.7; 95% CI 1.39-5.29; P =.020). After matching, there was no significant difference in the risk of 90-day major complications between identified strata (RR: 1.19, 95% CI: 0.86-1.64; P =.288). A data-driven BMI threshold of 40 was associated with a significantly increased risk of 2-year PJI following TSA. This is the first TSA study to observe BMI on a continuum and observe at what point BMI is associated with increased risk of 2-year PJI following TSA. Background: Obesity is a risk factor for many diseases, diagnosed by calculating body mass index (BMI). Methods: To find an association between BMI and mortality in adults, we searched PubMed for articles published in the 21st century. Our review included 82 original studies, comprising 2.7 million patients and 23.4 million patient years. Results: The meta-analysis showed a U-shaped relationship between BMI and all-cause mortality risk, with the lowest mortality in the BMI range of 25–30 kg/m2. Subgroup analysis showed a J-shaped relationship, with greater risk in the highest BMI range (>35 kg/m2). Among the elderly, BMI values <20 kg/m2 were associated with the highest risk. Among diabetic patients, a U-shaped relationship was noticed, again with the highest risk in the lowest (<20 kg/m2) and highest BMI range (>35 kg/m2). Among patients with cardiovascular disease, the risk increased with BMI values <25 kg/m2 but did not noticeably change for BMI exceeding that value. Among cancer patients, the relationship was less pronounced than in other subgroups, with a slightly higher risk (>35 kg/m2). Conclusions: Our results show that the lowest mortality is observed among patients with BMI 25–30 kg/m2. Introduction: Obesity is a major public health problem and a well-known cause of multiple comorbidities. With the increasing application of minimally invasive surgery for benign and malignant liver lesions, the results of laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) in obese patients are of great interest. Aim: To evaluate the short-term operative outcomes after LLR in obese patients and compare them to patients with normal weight and overweight. Material and methods: All 235 consecutive patients undergoing LLR from 2008 to 2023 were retrospectively analysed. Patients were categorized into 3 groups based on their body mass index (BMI): normal weight (18.5-24.9 kg/m²), overweight (25-29.9 kg/m²), and obese (= 30 kg/m²). The groups were then compared regarding preoperative data and intra- and postoperative outcomes. Results: Despite higher ASA score and associated comorbidities in the obese group, there were no significant differences in intraoperative complication (blood loss, damage to surrounding structures, conversion rate) between BMI groups (20.8% vs. 16.8% vs. 22.7%, p = 0.619). There were no significant differences in overall morbidity (34.7% vs. 27.7% vs. 29.5%, p = 0.582), as well as major morbidity (15.9% vs. 11.8% vs. 11.4%, p = 0.784) or mortality rates (1.4% vs. 1.7% vs. 0.0%, p = 1.000). Univariate logistic regression did not show BMI or obesity as a predictive variable for intraoperative complication. Conclusions: Obesity is not a significant, strong risk factor for worse short-term outcomes, and LLR may be considered also in patients with overweight and obesity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Since obesity and poor fitness appear to be unfavorable for both cardiovascular health and coping with viral infections such as COVID‐19, they are of specific interest in light of the increased risk of cardiovascular and respiratory events now seen after infection with SARS‐CoV‐2. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate how body mass index (BMI) and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in late adolescence are associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), respiratory disease, and mortality after COVID‐19. Methods: In this study, 1.5 million 18‐year‐old Swedish men with BMI and CRF measured during enlistment for military service 1968–2005 were included. Hospitalized and non‐hospitalized COVID‐19 cases were identified through the Patient Register or positive polymerase chain reaction tests, and age‐matched with non‐infected controls. CVD, respiratory disease, and mortality after COVID‐19 were divided into <60days, 60‐180days, >180days post‐infection. Cox regression models were used. Results: Hospitalized COVID‐19 cases (n = 9839), compared to controls, had >10‐fold, 50 to 70‐fold, and >70‐fold hazards of CVD, respiratory disease, and mortality over the initial 60 days post‐infection with little variation across BMI or CRF categories. The elevated risks persisted at declining levels >180 days. For non‐hospitalized COVID‐19 cases (n = 181,822), there was a 4‐ to 7‐fold increased acute mortality risk, and high CRF was associated with lower risk of post‐infectious respiratory disease. Conclusions: The high hazards of adverse outcomes during the first two months after COVID‐19 hospitalization, and across BMI and CRF categories, declined rapidly but were still elevated after six months. Adolescent CRF was associated with respiratory disease after COVID‐19 without hospitalization, which gives further support to the health benefits of physical activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Coding of obesity using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) in healthcare administrative databases is under‐reported and thus unreliable for measuring prevalence or incidence. This study aimed to develop and test a rule‐based algorithm for automating the detection and severity of obesity using height and weight collected in several sections of the Electronic Medical Records (EMRs). Methods: In this cross‐sectional study, 1904 inpatient charts randomly selected in three hospitals in Calgary, Canada between January and June 2015 were reviewed and linked with AllScripts Sunrise Clinical Manager EMRs. A rule‐based algorithm was created which looks for patients' height and weight values recorded in EMRs. Clinical notes were split into sentences and searched for height and weight, and BMI was computed. Results: The study cohort consisted of 1904 patients with 50.8% females and 43.3% > 64 years of age. The final model to identify obesity within EMRs resulted in a sensitivity of 92.9%, specificity of 98.4%, positive predictive value of 96.7%, negative predictive value of 96.6%, and F1 score of 94.8%. Conclusions: This study developed a highly valid rule‐based EMR algorithm that detects height and weight. This could allow large‐scale analyses using obesity that were previously not possible. Background: Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is the most common autoimmune disease. RA can cause permanent deformity and loss of productivity. The primary objective of the study was to evaluate the relationship of BMI with Disease Activity Score in RA patients. The secondary objective was to evaluate the presence of comorbidities such as diabetes, thyroid, hypertension, periodontitis, and pregnancy outcomes (in the case of females) in the RA patients population presented at the tertiary healthcare centre. Method: The presented study was a cross-sectional study. 100 Patients presented to the joint clinic were recruited. RA diagnosis of patients was based on the ACR/ELULAR criteria. Their demographic and clinical data was collected through one-on-one interviews. Results: The recruited population shows that BMI has a moderate positive correlation (r=0.347, p=0.001) with disease activity scores. 51% of RA patients have one or more comorbidities. 45.2 % of female RA patients suffered one or two miscarriages during their pregnancy. It is significantly higher as compared normal female population. Conclusions: Active control of BMI may be required to prevent RA symptom aggravation. RA patients are prone to develop comorbidities and females with RA may need close monitoring during their pregnancy period.

People with severe mental illness have a higher risk of cardiometabolic disease than the general population. Traditionally attributed to sociodemographic, behavioural factors and medication effects, recent genetic studies have provided evidence of shared biological mechanisms underlying mental illness and cardiometabolic disease. We aimed to determine whether signals in the DCC locus, implicated in psychiatric and cardiometabolic traits, were shared or distinct. In UK Biobank, we systematically assessed genetic variation in the DCC locus for association with metabolic, cardiovascular and psychiatric-related traits in unrelated "white British" participants (N = 402,837). Logistic or linear regression were applied assuming an additive genetic model and adjusting for age, sex, genotyping chip and population structure. Bonferroni correction for the number of independent variants was applied. Conditional analyses (including lead variants as covariates) and trans-ancestry analyses were used to investigate linkage disequilibrium between signals. Significant associations were observed between DCC variants and smoking, anhedonia, body mass index (BMI), neuroticism and mood instability. Conditional analyses and linkage disequilibrium structure suggested signals for smoking and BMI were distinct from each other and the mood traits, whilst individual mood traits were inter-related in a complex manner. Restricting analyses in non-"white British" individuals to the phenotypes significant in the "white British" sample is not ideal, but the smaller samples sizes restricted the phenotypes possible to analyse. Genetic variation in the DCC locus had distinct effects on BMI, smoking and mood traits, and therefore is unlikely to contribute to shared mechanisms underpinning mental and cardiometabolic traits. • DCC variants were associated with BMI, smoking, anhedonia, neuroticism and mood instability in a White British subset • Multiple signals for BMI and mood traits had multiple conditionally-independent signals • BMI, smoking and mood traits constituted distinct signals. • Some BMI and mood trait signals appeared to be relevant across ancestry groups. Depression is one of the most common mental disorders which dramatically threatens public health and wellness. Copper has been known to be involved in many biological processes that could help explaining the occurrence of depression. However, studies focusing on its effect have yielded mixed results. The present study aims to evaluate the association between serum copper levels and depression symptoms. It also investigates the effect of modification of BMI (body mass index) on depression symptoms. A total of 5419 US adults aged 20 years or older from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2016 participated in the cross-sectional study. Logistic regression models were applied using depression levels as the outcome and serum cooper/selenium/zinc categories as the main predictor, with the adjustments of gender, age, marital status, race, education, family income level, alcohol drinking, cigarette smoking, diabetes, pressure, stroke, and BMI. The interaction terms for copper levels and other covariates were further incorporated into the model to assess their roles in predicting depression symptoms. The prevalence of depression symptoms was significantly higher in samples with a high copper level. Among the levels of serum copper, selenium, and zinc, only the association between depression symptoms and serum copper levels was observed to be significant in the unadjusted model (P = 0.002). Individuals with a high copper level (114–134 μg/dL) and a very high copper level (≥ 134 μg/dL) had 1.85 (95% CI 1.24, 2.77)- and 1.72 (95% CI 1.21, 2.44)-fold higher odds ratio of depression symptoms, respectively, compared to those with a normal serum copper level. Although the association was not significant in the adjusted models, in which confounders were added, the interaction of copper level, including high and very high copper levels, and obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) exhibited significantly higher odds ratio (4.12 (95% CI 1.38, 12.27) and 4.53 (95% CI 1.87, 10.96)) of having depression symptoms. The concentration of serum copper was positively associated with the prevalence of depression symptoms. Abstract Background Hepatitis B is a global public health concern, and modifiable risk factors can accelerate progression of this disease. The burden of hepatitis B attributable to modifiable risk factors has not been well evaluated. We aimed to estimate the disease burden of hepatitis B attributable to tobacco, alcohol use, and a high body mass index (BMI) to guide lifestyle interventions in the management of patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Results In 2019, 33.73% of hepatitis B age-standardized deaths and 34.52% of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) were attributable to tobacco, alcohol use, and a high BMI. The proportion showed an increasing trend that 28.23% of deaths and 27.56% of DALYs were attributable to the three modifiable risk factors in 1990. The hepatitis B burden attributable to modifiable risk factors was disparate across regions and countries. Countries with a low socioeconomic status have a high burden of hepatitis B owing to modifiable risk factors. Countries with a high-level sociodemographic index also had an increasing burden of hepatitis B attributable to a high BMI. Conclusions Lifestyle interventions are warranted in hepatitis prevention strategies and plans of action. Countries with low and middle socioeconomic development should be prioritized, and countries with high socioeconomic development should be aware of the novel challenge of a high BMI-related disease burden.

The purpose of this study was to investigate biosocial living conditions of North Korean infants aged 0-2 years of age at measurement by drawing on refugee surveys conducted from 1995 to 2008 in South Korea--a critical time during which the country went through a great famine. To this end, body-mass indices of 48 infants were regressed on place of birth (China vs. North Korea), sex (male vs. female), and birth period (pre-reform period 1999 to 2002 vs. postreform period 2003 to 2006). Most interestingly, cohorts born before market reforms had a significantly higher BMI than those born afterwards. While marketization provided a way out of the crisis for many families, the reforms also created losers, including apparently recent mothers. Background: The permanent cessation of ovarian function and the transition of a woman from a reproductive to a nonreproductive life is defined as Menopause. This period is characterized by remarkable changes in menstruation and hormonal patterns as well as psychological and physiological symptoms. Objectives: The objectives of this study was to assess the Body-Mass Index, Waist-Hip Ratio, Submaximal Aerobic Capacity, Ankle-Brachial Index and Quality of Life using the SF-12 questionnaire among post-menopausal apartment dwelling women. Design: Descriptive Study Methods: 110 subjects meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the study. The subjects were assessed based on the screening tools Body-Mass Index (BMI) and Waist- Hip Ratio. The outcome tools used to assess the risk of cardiovascular disease among post-menopausal apartment dwelling women were Ankle- Brachial Index (ABI), Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) and health related quality of life SF-12 Questionnaire. Results: Out of 110 subjects, 59 subjects had a BMI of 25-29.9 kg/m² and 36 subjects had a BMI of ≥30 kg/m². 56 (51%) subjects had substantially higher waist- hip ratio (≥0.85 cm). 61(55.5%) subjects had mild to moderate peripheral arterial disease on left side and 67 (60.9%) subjects had mild-moderate peripheral arterial disease on right side. The range of 6MWD is between 490-900 m. The correlation between MCS 12 and PCS 12 has an intermediate poor correlation. Conclusion: The study shows that Post- Menopausal Apartment Dwelling Women are at risk of Cardiovascular Disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The burden of hepatitis B attributable to modifiable risk factors has not been well evaluated. We aimed to estimate the disease burden of hepatitis B attributable to tobacco, alcohol use, and a high body mass index (BMI) to guide lifestyle interventions in the management of patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Results: In 2019, 33.73% of hepatitis B age-standardized deaths and 34.52% of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) were attributable to tobacco, alcohol use, and a high BMI. The proportion showed an increasing trend that 28.23% of deaths and 27.56% of DALYs were attributable to the three modifiable risk factors in 1990. The hepatitis B burden attributable to modifiable risk factors was disparate across regions and countries. Countries with a low socioeconomic status have a high burden of hepatitis B owing to modifiable risk factors. Countries with a high-level sociodemographic index also had an increasing burden of hepatitis B attributable to a high BMI. Conclusions: Lifestyle interventions are warranted in hepatitis prevention strategies and plans of action. Countries with low and middle socioeconomic development should be prioritized, and countries with high socioeconomic development should be aware of the novel challenge of a high BMI-related disease burden. Although obesity is a well-established risk factor of cardiovascular event, the linkage between obesity and sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is not fully understood. Based on a nationwide health insurance database, this study investigated the impact of body weight status, measured by body-mass index (BMI) and waist circumference, on the SCA risk. A total of 4,234,341 participants who underwent medical check-ups in 2009 were included, and the influence of risk factors (age, sex, social habits, and metabolic disorders) was analyzed. For 33,345,378 person-years follow-up, SCA occurred in 16,352 cases. The BMI resulted in a J-shaped association with SCA risk, in which the obese group (BMI ≥ 30) had a 20.8% increased risk of SCA compared with the normal body weight group (18.5 ≤ BMI < 23.0) (p < 0.001). Waist circumference showed a linear association with the risk of SCA, with a 2.69-fold increased risk of SCA in the highest waist circumference group compared with the lowest waist circumference group (p < 0.001). However, after adjustment of risk factors, neither BMI nor waist circumference was associated with the SCA risk. In conclusion, obesity is not independently associated with SCA risk based on the consideration of various confounders. Rather than confining the findings to obesity itself, comprehensive consideration of metabolic disorders as well as demographics and social habits might provide better understanding and prevention of SCA. Aim: To investigate the relationship between the eccentricity of the body as a function of mass, height, circumference and body mass index of the body in the section of equal torques of the upper and lower part of body. Results: 62 people between the age of 18 and 28 were examined. Very good correlations between the eccentricity of the equal torques of the upper and lower parts of the body and body mass, height, BMI and circumference of the body in the section were derived. We were hypothesized that the cross section of equal torques is an area in which all body movements are focused. We are considering this area as "kinetic center" of the body. As proof of the reality of this center it was point out the infrared photos of the human body. The position of the ‘kinetic center’ on infrared body image appears point on spinal cord with highest temperature. Conclusions: The obtained results can find applications in solving various scientific problems.

Abstract Background Nutrition has been a low-priority area in Pakistan, with low visibility from the political leadership. Despite various efforts, Pakistan has been reported to have one of the highest prevalences of child and women malnutrition compared to other developing counties. Therefore, this study intends to examine the prevalence and determinants of nutritional status of women and children in Pakistan. Methods The present study uses the Demographic Health Survey (DHS) data from Pakistan 2012–13 (PDHS-3). The nutritional status of women was examined through Body-Mass Index (Underweight, normal, overweight, & obese), and that of children was examined through stunting (severe and moderate), wasting (severe, moderate, overweight), and underweight (severe, moderate, overweight). Descriptive statistics and bivariate analysis have been used along with multinomial logistic regression. Results A higher proportion of children in rural areas were severely stunted (19.6% vs. 12.5%), severe wasted (2.4% vs. 2.2%), and severe underweight (9.4% vs. 6%) than their urban counterparts. A higher proportion of rural women (9.5% vs. 5.5%) were underweight than urban women, whereas a higher proportion of urban women were obese (24.3% vs. 19.0%) than rural women. The odds of severe stunting (OR = 0.24; C.I. = 0.15–0.37), severe underweight (OR = 0.11; C.I. = 0.05–0.22) were lower among children from the richest wealth quintile than their poorest counterparts. The Relative Risk Ratio (RRR) of being overweight (RRR = 3.7; C.I. = 2.47–5.54) and Obese (RRR = 4.35; C.I. = 2.67–7.07) than normal BMI were higher among women from richest wealth quintile than women belonged to poorest wealth quintile. Conclusion This study has highlighted determinants associated with maternal and child nutritional status, whereby the child’s nutritional status was measured by stunting, wasting, and underweight, and BMI measured the mother’s nutritional status. The main risk factors for a child’s poor nutritional status include low household wealth, urban residence, and mother’s educational status. Similarly, the main risk factors for women’s poor nutritional status include increasing the women’s age, educational status, rural residence, and household wealth. Poor households should be provided special attention to improve the nutritional status among women and children in poor households.

Abstract Background Data on whether physical activity (PA) levels are related to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) when considering body mass index (BMI) are scarce. We assessed whether PA affects the development or resolution of NAFLD in conjunction with BMI changes. Methods Overall, 130,144 participants who underwent health screening during 2011–2016 were enrolled. According to the PA level in the Korean version of the validated International PA Questionnaire Short Form, participants were classified into the inactive, active, and health-enhancing PA (HEPA) groups. Results In participants with increased BMI, the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval after multivariable Cox hazard model for incident NAFLD was 0.97 (0.94–1.01) in the active group and 0.94 (0.89–0.99) in the HEPA group, whereas that for NAFLD resolution was 1.03 (0.92–1.16) and 1.04 (0.88–1.23) (reference: inactive group). With increased BMI, high PA affected only new incident NAFLD. PA enhancement or maintenance of sufficient PA prevented new incident NAFLD. In participants with decreased BMI, the HRs were 0.98 (0.90–1.07) and 0.88 (0.78–0.99) for incident NAFLD and 1.07 (0.98–1.17) and 1.33 (1.18–1.49) for NAFLD resolution in the active and HEPA groups, respectively. With decreased BMI, high PA reduced incident NAFLD and increased NAFLD resolution. Maintenance of sufficient PA led to a considerable resolution of NAFLD. Conclusion In this large longitudinal study, PA prevented incident NAFLD regardless of BMI changes. For NAFLD resolution, sufficient PA was essential along with BMI decrease. Maintaining sufficient PA or increasing the PA level is crucial for NAFLD prevention or resolution.

Abstract Background Previous studies of lifestyle characteristics and risk of miscarriage have mostly been retrospective and failed to account for induced abortions. We examine whether pre-pregnancy body-mass index, alcohol intake and smoking influence the risk of miscarriage after accounting for induced abortions. Methods We conducted a prospective cohort study of 9213 women with 26,594 pregnancies participating in the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health. We examined whether body-mass index, smoking and alcohol intake prior to pregnancy was associated with miscarriage. We estimated adjusted relative risks (RR) using generalized estimating equations with an exchangeable correlation matrix. We explored the impact of accounting for induced abortion by first excluding all induced abortions, and secondly including 50% of induced abortions in the comparison group. Results Of the 26,592 pregnancies which occurred during the follow-up period, 19% ended in a miscarriage. Abstract Background The study aims to investigate the changes in the socio-economic and demographic status of young mothers of age 15–24 years and to examine the association between mothers’ nutrition, i.e., Body Mass Index (BMI) and anaemia with child low birth weight for almost two decades during 1998–2016 in India. Methods National Family Health Survey (NFHS) round II and IV were used. The sample of this study included 3405 currently married young mothers from NFHS II and 44,742 from NFHS IV who gave birth at least one child in the last three years preceding the surveys. Logistic regression and Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition analysis have been used in this study to examine the corresponding association between the concerned variables. Results The analysis showed that the prevalence of low birth weight (LBW) babies has decreased from 26.1 to 22.8 for the 15 to 19 age group and from 20.4 to 18.7 for the 20 to 24 age group over time. Young mothers with low BMI or severe anaemia have shown higher odds of having LBW babies. For instance, the odds of having a LBW child was 1.44 (p-value = 0.000; 95% CI: 1.05, 1.65) for mothers with low BMI and 1.55 (p-value = 0.000; 95% CI: 1.27, 1.90) with severe anaemia. Over the decade, the association of LBW babies with mothers’ nutrition has decreased. The odds of LBW with mothers with low BMI decreased from 1.63 (p-value = 0.004; 95% CI: 1.21, 2.21) to 1.41 (p-value = 0.000; 95% CI: 1.27, 1.55). Similarly, mothers with severe anaemia, the odds of LBW child decreased from 2.6 (p-value = 0.000; 95% CI: 1.75, 3.8) in 1998 to 1.3 (p-value = 0.024; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.65) in 2016. Conclusions The maternal and child health improvement in India has been moderate over the decade. Still, a significant proportion of the women are suffering from poor health and young mothers are at more risk to deliver LBW babies. It is highly recommended to integrate maternal and child health programmes with the ongoing health policies to improve the situation while taking additional care of the young pregnant mother and their nutritional health.

Brain cannabinoid 1 receptors (CB1Rs) contribute importantly to the regulation of autonomic tone, appetite, mood and cognition. Inconsistent results have been reported from positron emission tomography (PET) studies using different radioligands to examine relationships between age, gender and body mass index (BMI) and CB1R availability in healthy individuals. In this study, we examined these variables in 58 healthy individuals (age range: 18–55 years; 44 male; BMI=27.01±5.56), the largest cohort of subjects studied to date using the CB1R PET ligand [11C]OMAR. There was a significant decline in CB1R availability (VT) with age in the pallidum, cerebellum and posterior cingulate. Adjusting for BMI, age-related decline in VT remained significant in the posterior cingulate among males, and in the cerebellum among women. CB1R availability was higher in women compared to men in the thalamus, pallidum and posterior cingulate. Adjusting for age, CB1R availability negatively correlated with BMI in women but not men. These findings differ from those reported using [11C]OMAR and other radioligands such as [18F]FMPEP-d2 and [18F]MK-9470. Although reasons for these seemingly divergent findings are unclear, the choice of PET radioligand and range of BMI in the current dataset may contribute to the observed differences. This study highlights the need for cross-validation studies using both [11C]OMAR and [18F]FMPEP-d2 within the same cohort of subjects.

Background and Objectives: The coexistence of major depressive disorder (MDD) and metabolic illness could culminate in an aberrant metabolic profile. Individuals with MDD and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are more likely to have impaired metabolic indicators. Effective antidepressant therapy can alleviate depressive symptoms and metabolic abnormalities. We focused on the effects of vilazodone, escitalopram, and vortioxetine on metabolic indices. Our research aimed to examine changes after 16 weeks of intervention in the glycemic indices, serum creatinine, lipid profile, hepatic parameters, and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) 17-item version., Methods: A three-arm, randomized, open-label trial with 96 MDD patients was executed. Participants were divided into three distinct groups in a 1:1:1 ratio for 16 weeks and issued tablets of vilazodone (20-40 mg/day), escitalopram (10-20 mg/day), or vortioxetine (5-20 mg/day). Vilazodone and vortioxetine were the two test medications, while escitalopram served as the control. We stratified the participants as non-diabetics and diabetics. Follow-up appointments were slated four weeks after the initial visit. HDRS scores and other metabolic indicators were assessed at each visit in the per-protocol (PP) population. After 12 weeks, glycated hemoglobin (HbA 1c ) levels were measured. Lower HDRS scores indicated that depression-related symptoms had improved. We investigated the relationship between the 16-week differences in the fasting blood sugar (FBS) and HDRS scores. The Kruskal-Wallis test, Bonferroni correction, and Pearson correlation were all used in our analysis. We registered our trial prospectively in the Clinical Trial Registry of India (CTRI) (2022/07/043808)., Results: Of the 134 people we screened, 119 (81.34%) were deemed eligible. The PP population included 96 (88.07%) of those who completed the 16-week study. The population's average age was 46.3 ± 6.2 years. Across all study groups, the median baseline HDRS score was 30.0 (p = 0.964). At 16 weeks, the equivalent scores dropped to 15.0, 14.0, and 13.0 (p = 0.002). The median FBS levels at baseline and 16 weeks were 100.5, 104.0, and 98.0 (p = 0.491) and 91.5, 98.5, and 91.5 (p = 0.561), respectively. The post hoc analysis manifested no statistically significant changes between any parameters. Except for the reductions in glycemic indices in diabetic patients, no other data differed significantly. There was a positive relationship between FBS and HDRS scores., Conclusion: Irrespective of the diabetic situation, all three drugs substantially lowered HDRS scores. People with diabetes experienced noticeable declines in glycemic indices. Despite this, the patients' other metabolic indicators showed no significant alterations. Abstract Background High rates of adverse pregnancy outcomes globally raise the need to understand risk factors and develop preventative interventions. The Pregnancy Outcomes in the Era of Universal Antiretroviral Treatment in Sub-Saharan Africa (POISE Study) was a prospective, observational cohort study conducted from 2016 to 2017 in Blantyre, Malawi. We examine the associations between indicators of nutritional status, specifically mid-thigh circumference (MTC) and body-mass index (BMI), and adverse pregnancy outcomes, low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth (PTB), and small-for-gestational age (SGA), in a cohort of HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected women. Methods Sociodemographic, clinical, laboratory, and maternal height, weight and MTC data were collected immediately before or after delivery at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QEHC) and 4 affiliated health centers in Blantyre, Malawi. Objective. Demonstrating cardiovascular injury amoung a group of female patients suffering from anorexia, compared to a similarly-aged group of women with body mass within the normal range. Materials and methods. Clinical, biological and paraclinical parameters were determined in the two patient groups: Group A, consisting of 39 patients suffering from anorexia, and Group B, consisting of 40 patients of similar ages, but having a normal body-mass index (BMI). Results. Compared to the normal-BMI cohort, the female patients diagnosed with anorexia are more bradycardic, have lower blood pressure, biologically were found to suffer from various degrees of anemia (hypochromic, microcytic, caused by iron deficiency), leucocytosis, thrombocytosis, hypoglicemia, slight nitrogen compounds retention, hyponatremia, hypokalemia, hypochloremia, hypomagnesemia, hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, low levels of triglycerides and of all cholesterol fractions, hypoproteinemia with hypoalbuminemia, mild hepatic cytolysis, increased levels of creatine kinase and cortisol. In terms of echocardiographic findings, the patients with anorexia have decreased dimensions of all cardiac chambers and of the inferior vena cava, lower cardiac output and index, diminished A-wave velocity, with an increase in E/A ratio, lower E', A' and S' velocities for the lateral ventricular wall, along with lower E' and A' velocities for the interventricular septum, and a decrease in both tricuspid annular and mitral annular systolic excursions. Discussions. There is an obvious link between the magnitude of clinical, biological and paraclinical abnormalities and low BMI. Further studies are needed in order to establish the degree of reversibility of said abnormalities following the total or partial correction of the patients' nutritional deficit. Conclusions. The patients suffering from anorexia present with multiple abnormal findings, both biological = and clinical in nature, alongside a subclinical negative impact on the cardiovascular system. Early detection of these negative changes could impose the adoption of a realimentation plan, possibly accompanied by the use of specific pharmacological agents, that would bring about improvements in these patients' overall status.

Abstract Background Cardiovascular disease accounts for about one-third of all premature deaths (ie, age =120 mmHg), diabetes, and BMI (>=22.5 kg/m2): 20 mmHg higher usual SBP about doubled cardiovascular mortality (RR 2.02, 95%CI 1.88–2.18]), as did diabetes (2.15, 1.95–2.37), and 10 kg/m2 higher usual BMI (1.92, 1.64–2.25). RR were similar in men and in women. The association with BMI and cardiovascular mortality was almost completely attenuated following adjustment for the mediating effect of SBP. Elevated SBP (>=120 mmHg), diabetes and raised BMI (>=22.5 kg/m2) accounted for 27%, 14%, and 16% of cardiovascular deaths, respectively. Conclusions This large prospective study provides direct evidence for the effects of these major risk factors on cardiovascular mortality in Cuba. Despite comparatively low levels of these risk factors by international standards, the strength of their association with cardiovascular death means they nevertheless exert a substantial impact on premature mortality in Cuba.

BackgroundAsthma is a common respiratory disease in children. We aimed to update information about the incidence and mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of childhood asthma and provide evidence-based recommendations for childhood asthma prevention.MethodsData were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, which was conducted from 1990 to 2019 in 204 countries. First, we estimated incidence, mortality and DALY rates of childhood asthma using a Bayesian meta-regression model. Second, we analyzed the relationship between the sociodemographic index (SDI) and DALYs in different age groups. Third, we studied changes in trends of the age-standardized DALY rate between 1990 and 2019 based on age group, SDI, and risk factors.ResultsGlobally, the number of deaths due to childhood asthma and the incidence and DALY rates were 12.9 thousand (95% UI 10.6 to 15.7), 22 million (95% UI 15 to 31), and 5.1 million (95% UI 3.4 to 7.5) in 2019, decreasing by 65.1% (95% UI 47.6 to 72.4), 5.3% (95% UI 2.6 to 8.8) and 30% (95% UI 18 to 41) from those in 1990, respectively. With the exception of high-SDI regions, the age-standardized DALY rate in all age groups in all SDI regions declined. In 2019, the age-standardized DALY rate in 1- to 4-year-old individuals was highest in low-SDI regions and that of 5- to 19-year-old individuals was highest in high-SDI regions. In contrast to low-SDI regions, individuals in high-SDI regions had a higher risk of DALYs due to asthma, except in those aged 1 to 4 years. A high body mass index (BMI) was a stronger risk factor than occupational asthmagens for childhood asthma.ConclusionOur findings provide insight into asthma prevention and treatment through the identification of key factors related to childhood asthma. Based on the data available, different risk factors according to age group and region/country suggest different prevention strategies, which is key for preventing childhood asthma.

Objectives: American Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends different ranges of gestational weight gain (GWG) based on pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI). In Taiwan, IOM guidelines are implemented concurrently with the local recommendation for GWG (10–14 kg). This study compared between the two sets of guidelines in relation to adverse perinatal outcomes. Methods: We analyzed 31,653 primiparas with singletons from 2011 to 2016 annual National Breastfeeding Surveys. Logistic regressions for preterm birth, small for gestational age (SGA), large for gestational age (LGA), cesarean section and excessive postpartum weight retention (EPWR) were fitted separately for GWG categorized according to IOM and Taiwan ranges. Areas under the receiver–operator curves (AUC) and the predicted probabilities for each outcome were compared in each BMI group. Results: AUC for both guidelines ranged within 0.51–0.73. Compared to Taiwan recommendation, IOM ranges showed lower probabilities of SGA for underweight (0.11–0.15 versus 0.14–0.18), of LGA for obese (0.12–0.15 versus 0.15–0.18), of EPWR for overweight (0.19–0.30 versus 0.27–0.39), and obese (0.15–0.22 versus 0.25–0.36); and higher probabilities of EPWR for underweight (0.17–0.33 versus 0.14–0.22). Conclusions for practice: Discriminative performance of IOM and Taiwan recommendations was poor for the five adverse birth outcomes, and no preference for either set of recommendations could be inferred from our results. In the absence of specific GWG guidelines, health care workers may provide inconsistent information to their patients. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association between hyperglycemia and body mass index (BMI), along with other associated comorbidities in hospitalized COVID-19 patients among the Indonesian population. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study conducted at Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Bandung between March 1, 2020, and August 30, 2020. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test for categorical data and unpaired t-test and Mann-Whitney alternative test for numerical data using SPSS version 24.0 (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 24.0. IBM, Armonk, NY, USA) and GraphPad Prism version 7.0 for Windows. RESULTS: A total of 142 hospitalized COVID-19 patients were documented between March and August 2020 at the Hasan Sadikin Hospital. Among the 142 patients, 116 (81.7%) survived, while 26 (18.3%) died. Sex, age, BMI, number of comorbidities, heart rate, respiratory rate, peripheral oxygen saturation, platelet count, random blood glucose (RBG), and length of stay (LOS) were significantly associated with mortality. Multivariate analyses demonstrated that admission RBG levels > 140 mg/dl were independently associated with an increased risk of mortality in COVID-19 patients (OR 4.3, 95% CI 1.1-17.5, p = 0.043), while BMI > 25 kg/m2 was significantly associated with reduced mortality (OR, 0.22; 95% CI 0.05-0.88, p = 0.033). CONCLUSIONS: Admission hyperglycemia, indicated by an increase in RBG levels >140 mg/dL, is independently associated with an increased risk of mortality in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, while obesity (BMI >25 kg/m2) might have protective properties against the risk of death. Background: High rates of adverse pregnancy outcomes globally raise the need to understand risk factors and develop preventative interventions. The Pregnancy Outcomes in the Era of Universal Antiretroviral Treatment in Sub-Saharan Africa (POISE Study) was a prospective, observational cohort study conducted from 2016 to 2017 in Blantyre, Malawi. We examine the associations between indicators of nutritional status, specifically mid-thigh circumference (MTC) and body-mass index (BMI), and adverse pregnancy outcomes, low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth (PTB), and small-for-gestational age (SGA), in a cohort of HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected women.Methods: Sociodemographic, clinical, laboratory, and maternal height, weight and MTC data were collected immediately before or after delivery at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QEHC) and 4 affiliated health centers in Blantyre, Malawi. LBW was defined as birth weight < 2.5 kg; PTB as gestational age < 37 weeks using Ballard score; and SGA as birth weight < 10th percentile for gestational age. Descriptive, stratified, and multivariable logistic regression were conducted using R.Results: Data from 1298 women were analyzed: 614 HIV-infected and 684 HIV-uninfected. MTC was inversely associated with LBW (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.95, p = 0.03) and PTB (aOR 0.92, p < 0.001), after controlling for HIV status, age, socioeconomic status and hemoglobin. The association between MTC and SGA was (aOR 0.99, p = 0.53). Similarly, higher BMI was significantly associated with lower odds of PTB (aOR 0.90, p < 0.001), LBW (aOR 0.93, p = 0.05), and SGA (aOR 0.95, p = 0.04).Conclusions: We observed an inverse relationship between MTC and adverse pregnancy outcomes in Malawi irrespective of HIV infection. MTC performs comparably to BMI; the ease of measuring MTC could make it a practical tool in resource-constrained settings for identification of women at risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Malaysia carries the burden of 13.8% anemia prevalence which urges for extensive research directed to its prediction and amelioration. This is the first study that aims to (a) propose simple non-invasive predictive anthropometric markers and their specific cut-off values for early prediction of anemia among the young adults in Malaysia, (b) provide anemia prevalence based on both gender and ethnicity among young adults of Malaysia. Method: The present cross-sectional study included 245 participants (113 men and 132 women) aged between 18 and 30 years. Anthropometric parameters were measured following the standard protocols. Blood samples were collected and hemoglobin levels were determined using the HemoCue haemoglobinometer (Hb 201+ System, Angelhom, Sweden) to detect the presence of anemia. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve was employed to assess and compare the efficacy of anthropometric indices in the prediction of anemia. Data were analyzed using SPSS (v. 22.0, IBM, Chicago, IL, USA) and MedCalc (v. 19.05, Ostend, Belgium). Result: The ROC analysis indicates that body mass index (BMI) is the best anthropometric marker with the highest area under the curve (AUC) and specificity (SP) for predicting the presence of anemia in young adults in Malaysia. Thus, the study proposes the optimal cut-off value of BMI for young men of Malaysia as 20.65 kg/m2 (AUC: 0.889) and young women of Malaysia as 19.7 kg/m2 (AUC: 0.904). The study also reports that Malaysian Indians have the highest prevalence of anemia (26.22%) followed by Malays (21.54%), "Others" (indigenous ethnic group) (20%), and Chinese (14.5%), with an overall higher prevalence of anemia in young adult women (21.96%) than in men (18.6%) of Malaysia. ObjectiveTo describe weight misperception and to examine the influence of sociodemographic factors on underestimation of weight status in Caucasian, Latino, Filipino, and Korean Americans.DesignData from 886 non-pregnant adults who participated in a cross-sectional survey administered in English, Spanish, and Korean were analyzed. The actual weight status derived from the participants' body mass index (BMI) categories and their perceived weight status were compared. A multiple logistic regression model was used to explore if underestimation of weight status was associated with ethnicity, sex, and education level.ResultsCaucasians, Latinos, Filipinos, and Koreans represented 19.4%, 26.8%, 27.4%, and 26.4%, respectively, of the total sample of 886. Overall, two in three participants correctly perceived their weight status, but 42% of Latinos underestimated their weight status and 22% of Koreans overestimated their weight status. Latino ethnicity, male, and low education (high school) were related to greater underestimation of weight status (P < .05). In contrast, Korean ethnicity was related to less underestimation of weight status (P < .05).ConclusionsMisperception of weight status should be counted in any efforts to develop a weight management intervention for Latino and Korean Americans.

Background: Cardiovascular disease accounts for about one-third of all premature deaths (ie, age < 70) in Cuba. Yet, the relevance of major risk factors, including systolic blood pressure (SBP), diabetes, and body-mass index (BMI), to cardiovascular mortality in this population remains unclear.Methods: In 1996-2002, 146,556 adults were recruited from the general population in five areas of Cuba. Participants were interviewed, measured (height, weight and blood pressure) and followed up by electronic linkage to national death registries until Jan 1, 2017; in 2006-08, 24,345 participants were resurveyed. After excluding all with missing data, cardiovascular disease at recruitment, and those who died in the first 5 years, Cox regression (adjusted for age, sex, education, smoking, alcohol and, where appropriate, BMI) was used to relate cardiovascular mortality rate ratios (RRs) at ages 35-79 years to SBP, diabetes and BMI; RR were corrected for regression dilution to give associations with long-term average (ie, 'usual') levels of SBP and BMI.Results: After exclusions, there were 125,939 participants (mean age 53 [SD12]; 55% women). Mean SBP was 124 mmHg (SD15), 5% had diabetes, and mean BMI was 24.2 kg/m2 (SD3.6); mean SBP and diabetes prevalence at recruitment were both strongly related to BMI. During follow-up, there were 4112 cardiovascular deaths (2032 ischaemic heart disease, 832 stroke, and 1248 other). Cardiovascular mortality was positively associated with SBP (>=120 mmHg), diabetes, and BMI (>=22.5 kg/m2): 20 mmHg higher usual SBP about doubled cardiovascular mortality (RR 2.02, 95%CI 1.88-2.18]), as did diabetes (2.15, 1.95-2.37), and 10 kg/m2 higher usual BMI (1.92, 1.64-2.25). RR were similar in men and in women. The association with BMI and cardiovascular mortality was almost completely attenuated following adjustment for the mediating effect of SBP. Elevated SBP (>=120 mmHg), diabetes and raised BMI (>=22.5 kg/m2) accounted for 27%, 14%, and 16% of cardiovascular deaths, respectively.Conclusions: This large prospective study provides direct evidence for the effects of these major risk factors on cardiovascular mortality in Cuba. Despite comparatively low levels of these risk factors by international standards, the strength of their association with cardiovascular death means they nevertheless exert a substantial impact on premature mortality in Cuba. Abstract Background Physical inactivity and obesity pose a major public health challenge. The aim of this study was to describe the level of physical exercise and body-mass index in college and university students, as well as to examine potential changes from 2010 to 2018. Methods Data stem from the SHoT study, a national student health survey for higher education in Norway, conducted at 4-year intervals. The SHOT studies conducted so far in 2010, 2014 and 2018, included 6053, 13,525 and 50,054 fulltime students (aged 18–35), respectively. Exercise frequency (average number of times exercising each week) was assessed in all three waves, and was used for the trend analysis. The last wave in 2018 also assessed the average intensity and duration of the exercise. Results Overall, students exercised less in 2018 compared to 2014, but comparable to level in 2010. The prevalence of overweight increased substantially from 2010 to 2018, but especially in the last 4 years and among older female students. Less than one of four male, and one of five female students, met the recommended criteria for both exercise frequency, intensity and duration. As expected, the associations between exercise and overweight/obesity were in a dose-response manner, and strong across all three waves. Conclusions Our findings show that the large majority of young adults fail to meet international recommendations on exercise, and that the proportion of overweight is increasing in both genders and across all age groups. We conclude that there is an urgent need for a broad approach to achieve a paradigm shift in supporting our college and university students to become more active.

Abstract Background The primary aim of this study was to examine the associations of normal weight obesity (NWO) with physical fitness in Chinese university students. As a secondary aim, we assessed whether possible differences in physical fitness between students classified as NWO and normal weight non-obese (NWNO) were mediated by skeletal muscles mass. Methods A total of 383 students (205 males and 178 females, aged 18–24 years) from two universities volunteered to participate in this study. Body height and weight were measured by standard procedures and body composition was assessed by bio-impedance analysis (InBody 720). NWO was defined by a BMI of 18.5–23.9 kg/m2 and a body fat percentage of > 20% or > 30% in male and female students, respectively. Physical fitness was measured using a 10-min intermittent endurance running test (Andersen test), countermovement jumps (CMJ) and a 5 × 5 m shuttle run test (5mSR). The level of leisure time physical activity (PA) was assessed by a questionnaire. Results 13.7% of male and 27.5% of female students were classified as NWO. We collected 299 frontal face images of 2017 cabinet ministers from 15 post‐Soviet states (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan). For each image, the minister's body‐mass index is estimated using a computer vision algorithm. The median estimated body‐mass index of cabinet ministers is highly correlated with conventional measures of corruption (Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index, World Bank worldwide governance indicator Control of Corruption, Index of Public Integrity). This result suggests that physical characteristics of politicians such as their body‐mass index can be used as proxy variables for political corruption when the latter are not available, for instance at a very local level.
