Le projet de construction de la ligne TGV Nord a permis la réalisation de la fouille de sauvetage de Riencourt-lès-Bapaume. Pour la première fois, il a été possible d'étudier un gisement de plein air du Paléolithique moyen sur une superficie de 10 000 m2. Les contributions préliminaires rassemblées dans ce volume sont des études réalisées sur des échantillonnages de l'abondant matériel lithique (environ 86 000 pièces). Les niveaux archéologiques dispersés dans toute la séquence lœssique de la première partie du Dernier Glaciaire ont livré du matériel lithique attribuable à plusieurs industries qui illustrent la complexité du Paléolithique moyen. L'assemblage du niveau CA montre la présence de deux chaînes opératoires, l'une de production d'éclats Levallois et l'autre de fabrication de lames. L'analyse fonctionnelle a mis en évidence une coïncidence entre les modes de production des supports (éclats, lames) et les groupes fonctionnels. Construction of the northern TGV line resulted in the rescue excavation of Riencourt-lès-Bapaume. For the first time, it was possible in excavate a Middle Palaeolithic open air site on an area of 10,000 m2. The preliminary contributions brought together in this volume represent analysis completed on short notice using samples drawn from abundant lithic material (approximately 86,000 pieces). The archaeological levels dispersed in the lœssic sequence of the first part of the last glacial, have yielded lithic artifacts which can be assigned to many industries which illustrate the complexity of the Middle Paleolithic. The lithic assemblage of level CA demonstrates the presence of the production of Levallois flakes and another for the production of blades. The functional analysis have shown that both flake and blade reduction technologies are associated with the specific tool functions.

Les sables verts remaniés, situés à la base des séquences stratigraphiques observées sur le gisement, ont livré des artefacts qui peuvent être attribués à une industrie à bifaces et à débitage non Levallois.L’assemblage du niveau CA comprend plus de 5 000 pièces travaillées provenant d’un secteur de 159 quarts de mètres carrés. Un des caractères les plus remarquables est la coexistence de chaînes opératoires de production d’éclats de conception Levallois et de chaînes de production laminaire relevant de schémas opératoires visiblement différents.Les outils façonnés sont peu nombreux. Le groupe moustérien domine les outils à bords convergents formant 31,11 % des racloirs et pointes de type déterminé. Le groupe paléolithique supérieur compte plus d’un outil sur cinq. Il est principalement composé de burins de très bonne facture, dièdres ou sur troncature, souvent multiples. La série CA appartient au complexe des industries à lames de la phase récente du Paléolithique moyen connues dans le nord‑ouest de l’Europe.Cette étude concerne 178 pièces, soit 3,5 % du matériel recueilli. Le très bon état de conservation des traces d’utilisation rend possible la reconnaissance de différentes étapes du travail du bois et de la peau. Les résultats ont montré une coïncidence entre les modes de production des supports employés (éclats, lames) et les groupes fonctionnels.Le niveau C a été reconnu sur une superficie de plus de 600 m2 et a livré plus de 50 000 artefacts. Les caractéristiques générales de la série non patinée ont été établies à partir de l’étude d’un échantillon de 31 000 pièces provenant d’un secteur de 775 quarts de mètres carrés.Toutes les catégories de vestiges se rapportant aux différentes phases des chaînes opératoires de production d’éclats Levallois sont représentées dans le niveau C. L’existence d’une chaîne opératoire de production de lames de conception différente est attestée en C, comme en CA, par la présence de nombreux nucléus à section prismatique associés à près de 400 lames à crête.Le niveau C comprend aussi de véritables nucléus Levallois à lames.Les outils retouchés sont assez peu représentés. Typologiquement, l’industrie du niveau C se rapproche d’un Moustérien de type Ferrassie. Il est cependant possible que cet assemblage résulte d’un mélange : Moustérien de type Ferrassie, industrie laminaire comparable à celle de CA, Moustérien de tradition acheuléenne de type A et industrie à affinités micoquiennes (quelques bifaces caractéristiques de ces dernières industries ont été trouvés en dehors de la zone étudiée).L’étude technologique de 543 nucléus, répartis en 3 catégories (non Levallois : 41 %, Levallois : 36,3 %, débitage laminaire : 23,7 %), montre l’extrême variabilité des nucléus, Levallois et non Levallois, ainsi que l’existence de méthodes variées pour la production des lames.Cet article tente de dégager quelques stratégies de production des racloirs du niveau C du gisement paléolithique moyen de Riencourt‑lès-Bapaume (Pas‑de‑Calais) à partir d’un échantillon et à l’aide de critères métriques. Associés à des milliers d’éclats, Levallois et laminaires, les outils examinés sont plutôt réalisés sur support non levallois, non laminaire et possédant du cortex. Les critères choisis n’ont pas permis de mettre en évidence une relation nette entre la production de supports et la réalisation d’outils, peut‑être à cause d’un certain opportunisme dans le choix des supports. D’autre part, aucun réaffutage ni passage entre les différentes catégories de racloirs n’a été constaté.Il a été possible d’effectuer un premier tri sur une partie du matériel. Outre les nucléus aux modes de débitage visiblement non prédéterminés, dont la plupart sont informes, et les pièces fragmentées, on peut remarquer l’association d’une quarantaine de nucléus Levallois avec 9 nucléus à lames de section généralement prismatique.De nombreux éclats Levallois n’ont pas été tansformés en outils. Parmi ces derniers, ceux du groupe moustérien sont les mieux représentés (II réduit = 52,31). L’ensemble des outils de type paléolithique supérieur (III réd. = 8,86) comprend notamment des burins dièdres sur cassure, des troncatures et des grattoirs. Les denticulés (IV réd. = 12,18), comme les encoches (12,05), ont été obtenus par des retouches très marginales, peu profondes, sur des supports variés.Il faut relever le nombre assez important de pièces appartenant à la catégorie des « divers » présentant des retouches inverses distales ou proximales, ainsi que la présence de pièces foliacées bifaciales dont certaines s’apparentent à des prondniks. Le matériel de la série B1 peut se définir comme étant un Charentien à débitage Levallois à affinités micoquiennes. The redeposited green sands at the base of the Riencourt‑ls‑Bapaume stratigraphic sequence yielded artifacts which can be associated with a biface industry of non‑Levallois debitage.The level CA assemblage consisted of more than 5 000 worked objects from an area of 159 quarter meter square units. One of the most remarkable features is the coexistence of two visibly different reduction sequences : one for the production of Levallois flakes and another for the production of blades. There are few retouched tools in proportion to the total lithic assemblage. The Mousterian tool group dominates typologically. Tools with convergent edges form 31.11 percent of the scrapers and typed points. The Upper Paleolithic tool group is more than 20 % of the retouched tool assemblage, and it is principally composed of well‑made, dihedral burins and burins on truncations, often multiple. The level CA series is part of the late Middle Paleolithic blade industry complex known from northwest Europe.This study is based on 178 pieces or 3,5 % of the collected material. The very good preservation of usewear traces made possible the recognition of different stages of wood and skin working. The results have shown that both flake and blade reduction technologies are associated with the deliberate production specific tool functions.Level C was excavated over an area of more than 600 square meters and yielded more than 50 000 artifacts. The genera characteristics of the non‑patinated series were established by an analysis of a 31 000 piece sample of the objects coming from an area of 775 quarter meter square units.Each phase of the reduction sequence for the production of Levallois flakes is represented in Level C. The existence of a blade reduction sequence is attested to in Level C, as in Level CA, by the presence of a number of cores with prismatic sections and nearly 400 crested blades. The Level C series also includes true Levallois « blade » cores.The retouched tools are relatively poorly represented. Typologically, the industry of Level C tends towards a Mousterian of type Ferrassie. It is possible that the lithic assemblage recovered from Level C resulted from a mixing of various assemblages : a Ferrassie Mousterian, a blade industry like that of Level CA, a Mousterian of Acheulian Tradition Type A, and an industry with Micoquian influences. A few bifaces characteristic of these latter two facies were recovered outside the area considered in this study.A technological study of 543 cores divided into 3 categories (non‑Levallois : 41 %, Levallois : 36,3 %, blade : 23,7 %) underlines, on the one hand, the variability of Levallois and non‑Levallois cores and, on the other hand, seems to confirm the existence and the mastery of diverse techniques for the production of blade debitage.This article attempts to reveal some strategies in scraper production using metric criteria on a sample drawn from the Level C materials. Associated with thousands of flakes, Levallois flakes and blades, most of the tools examined are made on non‑Levallois and non‑blade flakes with some cortex. The criteria chosen for this study did not show a clear relationship between the production of flakes and the production of tools, perhaps because there was a certain opportunism in the selection of tool blanks. On the other hand, there was no evidence for resharpening or for transitions between the different scraper types.This study is based on a preliminary sorting of a portion of the material. Besides the cores of clearly non‑predetermined debitage, the majority of which are shapeless, and the fragmentary pieces, there is a noticeable presence of about 40 Levallois cores and 9 blade cores with generally prismatic sections. Among the retouched tools, the Mousterian types are the best represented (II essential = 52,31). The Upper Paleolithic tool types (III essential = 8,86) consist most notably of dihedral burins on snaps, truncations, and end scrapers. Denticulates (IV essential = 12,18), like notches (12,05), were obtained by very marginal, shallow retouch on highly variable blanks.There were a relatively large number of diverse pieces and some typologically varied pieces with inverse distal or proximal retouch. Bifacial foliate pieces, some of which appear to be prondniks, were also present. In sum, the B1 series can be defined as a Charentian Mousterian with levallois debitage and affinities with the Micoquian.

International audience; During the Epigravettian (22,000 – 9,000 cal. BCE), ornaments were mainly made of marine shells. The assemblage discovered at the site of the Martin rock shelter (Gréolières, Alpes-Maritimes), is completely in keeping with this tradition. We study here the 136 marine shells recovered during the rescue excavation, by integrating the choice of shell species, the manufacturing processes and the reconstitution of ornamental compositions. The biography of these ornamental elements has been reconstituted using a techno-functional experimental referential which enables, by comparing experimental and archaeological traces, the identification of practices already known for the Epigravettian, as well as original manufacturing processes and fastening systems.; Durant l’Épigravettien (22 000 – 9 000 cal. BCE), la parure est principalement réalisée en coquilles marines. Les objets de parure découverts sur le site de l’abri Martin (Gréolières, Alpes-Maritimes) s’inscrivent totalement dans cette tradition. Occupation of west-central France between 19 and 17.5 ky cal. BP: which cultural adaptations to the Heinrich 1 cold event? Technological and functional approach of the lithic industry of la Marche (Vienne) and la Garenne (Indre).

Understanding hunting technology is pivotal in the study of adaptive and innovative forces that influenced the evolution of prehistoric societies. The manufacture, design and use of hunting weapons involve technical processes such as those of tool miniaturization, blank standardization and projection modes, but also influence broader demographic structures such as human subsistence strategies, territorial organization and socio-economic structures. Here we present a unique discovery from a newly discovered site at Les Prés de Laure (Var, France). Excavations revealed a multi-stratified open-air site with archaeological units that were rapidly buried by the alluvium of the Jabron River. In a Gravettian layer dated between 25 and 23.5 ka cal BP, within an area apparently dedicated to horse carcasses processing and consumption, 11 backed points were discovered in direct association with altered bone remains. Wear and residue analysis of the lithic backed points in combination with complementary experimental data converge to indicate that the find represents a bone point armed with lithic barbs and used as hunting weapon. This discovery provides new evidence for the manufacture and use of hunting weaponry in a Gravettian context and stimulates discussion on Paleolithic weapon function and design, offering a unique window into the characterization of prehistoric hunting strategies.

L'ethnoarchéologie : un outil d'analyse efficace

Durant l’Épigravettien (24 000 – 11 000 cal. B.P.), la parure est majoritairement constituée de coquilles marines. Cependant, ces assemblages n’ont souvent bénéficié que de déterminations malacologiques, qui révèlent une certaine homogénéité dans le choix espèces utilisées et les études technologiques et fonctionnelles n’ont été menées que sur peu de sites. Malgré la rareté des données concernant la chaîne opératoire technique et les modes d’utilisation, les quelques travaux techno-fonctionnels ont permis de mettre en lumière à la fois l’existence de pratiques communes et de choix techniques ou ornementaux différents. La prise en compte systématique de tous les aspects de la biographie des objets semble donc nécessaire pour appréhender pleinement la complexité et la diversité des traditions ornementales épigravettiennes. L’étude présentée ici se propose de contribuer à la reconstitution des traditions ornementales à travers le cas de l’abri Martin (Gréolières, Alpes Maritimes). Situé à 900 mètres d’altitude, ce site a révélé des niveaux archéologiques attribués à l’Épigravettien terminal. Parmi les vestiges découverts dans ces niveaux, 136 éléments de parure en coquille marine ont été collectés, formant un corpus composé à la fois des espèces très courantes dans les assemblages contemporains (Tritia sp., Columbella rustica, Antalis sp.), mais aussi d’éléments exceptionnels (Mitrella gervillii et Euspira sp.). Les différentes étapes de la chaîne opératoire ont été étudiées dans une approche systémique, intégrant l’acquisition des matières premières, les modes de fabrication, la reconstitution des modes d’utilisation et l’étude du contexte d’abandon. L’intégration de l’approche techno-fonctionnelle à l’étude des objets de parure, bien qu’encore ponctuelle, permet d’apporter de nouvelles données, permettant de contribuer à une meilleure compréhension des comportements des groupes épigravettiens. Cette approche permet en effet d’éclairer non seulement leur mode d’exploitation des territoires à travers les sources d’acquisition, mais aussi les choix techniques et les pratiques ornementales. Le recours systématique à ce type d’étude permettrait de constituer une image plus complète des traditions ornementales épigravettiennes et mieux comprendre dans quelle mesure elles nous renseignent sur l’organisation des groupes.

International audience; Since the beginning of the 20th century, certain works (e.g. Debruge and Mercier, 1912, Debruge, 1910) have mentioned the presence of terrestrial snail shells pierced in archaeological sites of eastern Algeria. These sites are locally called “rammadiyat” (or “escargotières”). After about a century, new studies are interested in this phenomenon (Hutterer et al., 2011, 2014, Saafi et al., Submitted). Although the appearance of perforated gastropod has been identified since the Aurignacian (in the Iberian Peninsula). and the Iberomaurusian (in North Africa), they are more abundant in recent periods (Mesolithic / Capsian). In the North African sites the percentage of pierced shells does not exceed 20% of the malacological assemblage at each site. Generally, the perforations are similar in shape, size and position. However, thanks to an ethnographic study, an experimentation program and a traceological analysis some differences can be highlighted and we have been able to identify the techniques used to make the perforations and their function. Some of the perforations were made pierced by human canine teeth or by a cutting tool (blades or slats for example). In most of the cases when the perforations are located in the upper part of the spire they are used to facilitate the extraction of the animal from its shell when the latter resists in the upper part of the shell. The perforations at the last body whorl (behind the peristome) are fewer. They are related to the production of ornaments (necklaces) and, up to now, they are only present on the Maghreb. This is an example of the new role of continental malacofauna in the daily life of human groups. Moreover, due to the limited presence at a few sites, these perforated terrestrial snail shells are considered to be markers of the mobility of human groups in the western Mediterranean.

International audience; Insights in Epigravettian ornamental traditions: use-wear analysis on the shell ornaments from Martin rockshelter (Alpes-Maritimes, France)

International audience; Ornaments are a non-verbal mode of communication, employed by societies to transmit various information between individuals such as membership to a group, social status or biological maturity. Ornaments contribute both to the construction of the group and individual identity. Ornamental traditions, when we are able to decipher them, can give us an image of the territorial and social organisation of human groups. Since ornaments can be part of the maintenance of exchange networks, it can inform us about transfers of know-how and/or aesthetic conceptions. During the Epigravettian (20 000 – 9 000 cal. B.P.), ornaments are predominantly made out of marine shells. However, most Epigravettian sites only benefit from malacological determination. On very few site technical and sometimes functional aspects were taken in account: grotta Continenza, riparo Biarzo and Vela Spila. Martin rockshelter, attributed to terminal Epigravettian, revealed 136 seashells, among which Antalis sp., Tritia pellucida and Columbella rustica. Most of them present use-wear traces, which give us an idea on how the objects were worn, on the ornamental compositions. Use-wear traces nevertheless erase gradually technological traces. They however bring complementary information on the societies, in the extent that technical gestures stem from cultural choices. We therefore made experimentations in order to understand how use-wear modifies technical traces, and consequently, in what extent can we identify technological choices on a used archaeological object. Various manufacture techniques were tested on three marine shell species: perforation by grinding, pressure and drilling, on Tritia pellucida and Columbella rustica, and truncation by sawing and flexion for Antalis sp.. The shells were then used by means of a sieve shaker, and use-wear development was regularly documented during the experimentation. This work should allow us to better understand the different steps of ornament biography.

The functional analysis of knapped stone tools produced by the last hunter-gatherers (during the 7th and the beginning of 6th millennium B.C.) and the first farmers (beginning of 6th millennium B.C.) in the south-east of France shows a diversity of plant working (taxa and gesture). Both groups used tools with notched edges shaped by pressure or percussion for plant scraping. The use-wear performed on these tools shows the contact on a medium rigid, fresh, lightly siliceous plant but not abrasive. The contact angle of the motion is quite low. The morphological standardization of the concave used zone, as well as the type of worked material and motion can be interpreted as a specialisation of these tools for a particular task. This kind of tools could be involved in many different chaînes opératoires linked to plant working. Among them, we choose to focus on basketry. Investigations of today’s practices were conducted among two basket makers of the south of France (PACA region). We observed the ways of collecting, processing and weaving four different species of plants to manufacture baskets and fish traps (Juncus Maritimus Lam., Arundo Donax L., Myrtus Communis L., Salix Viminalis L.) and one species to only weave baskets (Castanea Sativa Mill.). This study allowed us to better understand the different treatments each species needs and the types of tools and gestures used for. Some of these activities were reproduced experimentally using flint tools similar to the archaeological ones to complete the study. By blending ethnographic and experimental activities, we had the opportunity to better understand the archeological data and produce new hypothesis on its meaning.

Cultural adaptation and mobility patterns in siberian tundra and taiga environments

International audience; Birch bark tar, the oldest adhesive known in Europe, was widely used during Prehistory. This material, produced by a controlled heat treatment of birch bark, is identified in various spheres of activities and provides valuable information on know-how, technical and territorial systems of past societies. This biomaterial can also supply evidence for socio-economic networks and mobility. However, very few is known on the systems of production during Prehistory, even for Neolithic period. The lack of findings in the archaeological record requires the development of an approach that combines experimental archaeology and biomolecular chemistry. We present here (i) the results of experimental production of birch bark tar and (ii) their molecular signatures according to different processes based on the use of ceramic vessels. The key role of bark quality is highlighted for the first time. This study also details direct archaeological inference of the experimental results obtained: a total of 23 samples from the site of Nice-Giribaldi (France, second part of the Vth century BCE) was investigated. Different categories of birch bark tars were identified during Neolithic in the south of France, giving evidence for complex manufacture systems and procurement networks

International audience; Throughout the Upper Palaeolithic, shell beads experienced few modifications as the only manufacturing stage is reduced to the perforation of the shell. In epigravettian contexts, whereas raw material identification is systematic, the characterisation of perforation techniques is still rarely considered. The few studies which take in account this aspect show that technical choices vary much more than raw material choices ; therefore bringing to light new information regarding cultural differentiation in epigravettian groups. It seems therefore necessary today to characterise precisely the traces specific to each perforation technique to define the technical choices adopted by different prehistoric groups. Nevertheless, some factors might modify the traces and efficiency of the techniques. The shell thickness can vary according to the species and to environmental conditions, which can change significantly from one area to another within the same body of water. Thus we made an experimentation using three species, commonly discovered in epigravettian contexts: Tritia pellucida, Tritia neritea and Columbella rustica. Eight perforations (direct and indirect percussion, pressure, sawing, manual rotation, scratching, grinding, and inside-out bipolar percussion techniques were tested to identify their traces and variability depending on the species tested and the origin of the shell. The drills used during the experimentation were replica of drills discovered in the epigravettian site of Riparo Tagliente. This site was chosen because one of the levels (level 13a alfa) revealed lithic drills and perfored shells. This association could be interpreted as traces of shell bead manufacturing activity. These experimentations and the traceological analysis of the archaeological shells and drills, should enable us to understand the link between the techniques involved, the species exploited and the visible traces on shells.

National audience; En France, les premières chaînes opératoires lamellaires visant à la production de supports de microlithes (bruts ou retouchés) apparaissent en contexte aurignacien (Bon 2009) et perdurent jusqu’à la fin du Premier Mésolithique où leurs produits sont presque exclusivement supports d’armatures de projectile. Au cours du Paléolithique supérieur, une grande variabilité en terme de production marque l’évolution de ces lamelles destinées à diverses utilisations en armatures de projectile ou encore en armatures de couteau. La question de l’appartenance de ces objets à la sphère domestique (couteaux pour des tâches réalisées au sein de l’habitat) ou à la sphère cynégétique (projectiles ou couteaux pour des tâches réalisées en dehors de l’habitat dans le cadre de la chasse) en regard des productions laminaires et des productions d’éclats est déterminante dans la compréhension du statut fonctionnel des sites et, de fait, des comportements de mobilité de ces groupes (Bon 2005, Bon 2009, Langlais 2010, Bachellerie et al. 2011, Anderson et al. 2015, Renard et Ducasse 2015). Si, dans certains contextes, les usages sont bien déₙis par la tracéologie (notamment O’Farrell 2005, Pasquini 2013 et cf. II. ci-dessous), il est parfois délicat de distinguer clairement la fonction et le fonctionnement de ces objets qui armaient projectiles ou couteaux. C’est pourquoi, suite à la présentation de l’analyse fonctionnelle d’assemblages lamellaires paléolithiques, nous proposons d’aborder trois questions méthodologiques qu’il paraît fondamental de développer dans le cadre de la reconstitution fonctionnelle de ces objets.

International audience; This research concerns the characterisation of economy of a Mesolithic settlement in the South of France. The Mourre de Sève site is a rock shelter located not far the confluence of Rhône-Ouvèze and it represents the exploitation of a riverine environment by hunter-gatherers. The latest excavations, in 1994 and 1997, dated the site using AMS to the Sauveterrian and the Castelnovian periods. The Castelnovian lithic industry from the top levels of the site constitutes one of the few blade and trapeze complexes of the region between the Alps and the Pyrenees. In this article we discuss the results of use-wear analysis carried on the lithic artefacts from the recent excavations. The results of this analysis are linked to multidisciplinary studies of the archaeological material to characterize the economy of the site. The findings suggest continuity in economy type from the Sauveterrian to the Castelnovian occupations
