1. Use of high-pressure processing and low-temperature storage to extend the performance shelf life of 2 types of string cheese

Abstract: ABSTRACT: The manufacturing method of string cheese is similar to mozzarella, but the hot curd is extruded through narrow tubes or pipes, which align the protein fibers that provide the characteristic ability for consumers to pull strings from this cheese. Firmness is another important performance attribute for consumers who just bite into the string cheese without peeling off strings. There have only been a few studies on string cheese, but it is known that stringiness and firmness decrease during prolonged storage, which is a particular challenge for exporting string cheese. We explored 2 treatments to try to retain the stringiness and firmness of string cheese for longer storage periods. The techniques used were high-pressure processing (HPP; 600 MPa for 3 min) and reduced storage temperature (0°C). In other cheese varieties, these techniques have helped extend the performance shelf life. We tested these techniques using the 2 main types of commercial string cheese: direct acid string cheese (DASC) and cultured string cheese (CSC), which were obtained from 2 different manufacturing facilities. The DASC had higher fat (∼2.2%) and higher pH values (∼0.2 units) compared with the CSC. The CSC had higher protein content (∼3.4%), higher insoluble calcium content (∼8 mg insoluble Ca/g protein) and higher texture profile analysis (TPA) hardness values (∼4 N) compared with the DASC. Due to the compositional differences, the 2 varieties were statistically analyzed separately for all other attributes. In both cheese types, HPP caused an immediate reduction in stringiness, some solubilization of insoluble calcium, and a slight increase in the cheese pH values. High-pressure processing also caused a slight increase in TPA hardness of the CSC samples until 14 d (possibly due to a slight increase in cheese pH). The use of the 0°C storage temperature reduced proteolysis and helped retain firmness during storage. Low-temperature storage could help extend the performance shelf life of string cheese by a couple of months, but HPP was not suitable, as the process caused an immediate reduction in stringiness due to the disruption of the matrix induced by the HPP treatment.

2. Рентгенэндоваскулярное лечение клапанного стеноза аорты в сочетании с ишемической болезнью сердца: систематический обзор

Abstract: Цель. Оценить и сравнить эффективность и безопасность одномоментных и этапных чрескожных коронарных вмешательств и транскатетерных имплантаций аортального клапана. Методы. Поиск источников проводили в базах данных PubMed, Google Scholar и Cochrane Library по ключевым словам. Отобрали наиболее цитируемые исследования, содержащие данные о подходах к эндоваскулярному лечению пациентов с ишемический болезнью сердца и аортальным стенозом при помощи одномоментных и этапных чрескожного коронарного вмешательства и транскатетерной имплантации аортального клапана. Анализировали показатели выживаемости, осложнений и других конечных точек исследований, а также влияние очередности вмешательств на исходы лечения. Результаты. При поиске по ключевым словам в базах данных выявили 1 527 оригинальных источников, из которых в обзор включили 60: проспективные и ретроспективные исследования, а также последние рекомендации профессиональных сообществ по сердечно-сосудистым заболеваниям, данные статистики оперативных вмешательств и заболеваемости, фундаментальные работы. Приблизительно в 70 % случаев используют этапный подход, при котором сначала выполняют чрескожное коронарное вмешательство, а затем транскатетерную имплантацию аортального клапана. В большинстве работ при сравнении различных подходов не выявлено достоверной разницы по конечным точкам, в госпитальном периоде их частота, как правило, в пределах 3 %, а в отдаленном — до 30 %. Тем не менее при детальном анализе частоты определенных контрольных точек в ряде работ выявлены противоречия. Заключение. Несмотря на активное изучение результатов одномоментных и этапных чрескожных коронарных вмешательств и транскатетерных имплантаций аортального клапана, ответ на вопрос о том, какой подход лучше, не определен. Последовательность вмешательств не отражена в современных рекомендациях, большинство крупных работ носит ретроспективный характер, а их выводы неоднозначны. Необходимы дополнительные проспективные исследования, чтобы определить категории пациентов, которым та или иная очередность операций принесет наибольшую пользу. Поступила в редакцию 9 апреля 2024 г. 3. Recognizing Individuals Prone to Spreading Extremist Ideology in Prison

Abstract: The problem of the research is to identify persons potentially capable of spreading violent ideology at the stage of arrival in a penal institution, during the mandatory psychodiagnostic examination of inmates. The aim of the study was to build a probabilistic model for identifying disseminators of extremist-terrorist ideology. The subject of the study was behavioural characteristics and profiles of protective mechanisms of those convicted of extremist-terrorist crimes. The research methods were expert assessment of behavioural characteristics of convicts and the LSI (Life Style Index) test, which allows to determine behavioural and emotional features of an individual based on the defence mechanisms. Comparison of the behavioural characteristics of persons capable, according to the assessment of the staff, of spreading the ideology of violence, largely corresponded to the behavioural characteristics of the functioning of such defence mechanisms as projection, compensation and reactive formation. At the same time, the behavioural characteristics of individuals with a low probability of propagating extremist-terrorist ideology corresponded to the functioning of defence mechanisms: suppression, regression and intellectualisation. Further research is expected to identify the personal characteristics of inmates vulnerable to radicalisation in prison.

4. Fintech, the threat of technology in the conventional financial system

Abstract: This study centred on the effect of technology on conventional payment methods and their consequences for society. Considering the presence of digital currencies, also known as cryptocurrencies, used in transactions through financial technology (fintech), this study could serve as a basis for developing laws and regulations governing fintech. The purpose of this study was to offer a clear and specific understanding of the legitimacy and societal advantages of fintech in Indonesia. This study employed regulatory research methodology, incorporating socio-legal techniques, legislative analysis, and examination of legal concepts. The findings of this study have effectively achieved three fundamental criteria in the use of fintech: assurance, benefit, and fairness. The regulations on fintech are outlined in Bank Indonesia Regulation No. 19/12/PBI/2017, Financial Services Authority Regulation No. 77/POJK.01/2016, and Law No. 8 of 1999, which also address matters related to consumer protection. From a sociocultural standpoint, fintech embodies a technologically- driven revolution that fosters societal development. Fintech endeavours to offer benefits to the public through facilitating electronic financial transactions. It was emphasised that fintech plays a crucial role in reshaping society by revolutionising how people interact with finances. A key aspect of this transformation is the shift away from conventional payment methods towards digital alternatives. It is essential for both consumers and fintech companies to understand and follow legal requirements when implementing fintech solutions, as adherence to regulations is critical. Failure to uphold ethical standards within the fintech industry can hinder its widespread adoption and lead to negative consequences. Understanding the potential threats posed by fintech to the conventional financial system will allow financial institutions and regulators to develop effective risk management strategies

5. How increased heifer growth rate and reduced dairy cow replacement rate can improve farm economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions - a win to win situation?

Abstract: Rearing of replacement heifers makes up a significant part of the total costs in dairy farming. Nevertheless, the average age at first calving for dairy heifers still stays well above 2 years in many countries. This study examined the economic and environmental impacts of increased heifer growth rates and reduced replacement rates on Norwegian dairy farms. The current average growth rate in Norway (baseline scenario) was compared to an accelerated growth rate scenario. Within each of the two growth rate scenarios, we compared three different cow replacement rates. A farm account survey dataset containing physical and economic data on 311 Norwegian farms was clustered into three farm groups: small, medium, and large. To model economic consequences, we used the whole-farm linear programming model ScotFarm. A life cycle analysis model was used to model the environmental impacts of the baseline scenario and an accelerated growth rate scenario on the three farm groups. Accelerated heifer growth rate had a positive effect (14–28%) on farm annual gross margin depending on farm size. While accelerated growth rate resulted in only minor reductions in total emissions at farm level compared to the baseline scenario, reduced replacement rate lowered total farm level emissions by up to 8%, and emissions per unit of output by up to 6%. We conclude that an accelerated heifer growth rate scenario could potentially increase farm gross margin by some 14–28% compared with a baseline growth rate scenario. Reducing the replacement rate would be more efficient to reduce farm−level greenhouse gas emissions.

Abstract: The first measurements of femtoscopic correlations with the particle pair combinations π±KS0 in pp collisions at s=13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are reported by the ALICE experiment. Using the femtoscopic approach, it is shown that it is possible to study the elusive K0⁎(700) particle that has been considered a tetraquark candidate for over forty years. Source and final-state interaction parameters are extracted by fitting a model assuming a Gaussian source to the experimentally measured two-particle correlation functions. The final-state interaction in the π±KS0 system is modeled through a resonant scattering amplitude, defined in terms of a mass and a coupling parameter, The extracted mass and Breit–Wigner width, derived from the coupling parameter, of the final-state interaction are found to be consistent with previous measurements of the K0⁎(700). The small value and increase of the correlation strength with increasing source size support the hypothesis that the K0⁎(700) is a four-quark state, i.e. a tetraquark state of the form (q1,q2‾,q3,q3‾) in which q1, q2 and q3 indicate the flavor of the valence quarks of the π and KS0. This latter trend is also confirmed via a simple geometric model that assumes a tetraquark structure of the K0⁎(700) resonance.

Abstract: Diet significantly affects reproductive outcomes across species, yet the precise effects of macronutrient compositions beyond caloric intake on reproductive aging are understudied. Existing literature presents conflicting views on the fertility impacts of nutrient-rich versus nutrient-poor developmental diets, underscoring a notable research gap. This study addresses these gaps by examining effects of isocaloric diets with varied protein-to-carbohydrate ratios during both developmental and adult stages on reproductive aging of a large, outbred Drosophila melanogaster population (n = ∼2100). Our results clearly demonstrate an age-dependent dietary impact on reproductive output, initially dominated by the developmental diet, then by a combination of developmental and adult diets in early to mid-life, and ultimately by the adult diet in later life. Importantly, we found that the effects of developmental and adult diets on reproductive output are independent, with no significant interaction. Further investigations into the mechanisms revealed that the effect of developmental diet on fecundity is regulated via ovarioles formation and vitellogenesis; while, the effect of adult diet on fecundity is mostly regulated only via vitellogenesis. These insights resolve disputes in the literature about dietary impacts on fertility and offer valuable perspectives for optimizing fertility strategies in improving public health and conservation efforts in this changing world.

Abstract: The use of metallic oxide coated carbon nanoparticles (MOCCNs) in both water treatment technologies and forensic science is a cutting-edge field of study. The potential of using metallic-coated carbon nanoparticles in adsorption processes, followed by their reuse in latent fingerprint detection, offers a promising advancement for both environmental remediation and forensic science. Adsorption of heavy metals is an important process in environmental science and engineering that involves the binding of metal ions to the surfaces of solid objects. This study seeks to provide an overview of recent advances in this field, focusing on applications, major discoveries, methodology, and prospective future approaches of metallic oxide coated carbon nanoparticles. A significant portion of this review is dedicated to the innovative reuse of these nanoparticles in latent fingerprint detection, emphasizing the economic and ecological advantages of repurposing spent adsorbents. The discussion encompasses the characterization of metallic oxide-coated nanoparticles, methods for recovering and regenerating them, and their forensic performance post-regeneration.

Abstract: The continuous rapid upsurge in inflationary pressure in Nigeria amidst the gradual liberalisation of the country’s trade and financial market calls for questioning of the role of trade and financial openness in the inflationary trend in Nigeria, which makes the research on this issue relevant. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of trade and financial openness on inflation in Nigeria. In the estimation of the model built to capture the objective of the study, the fully modified ordinary least squares was employed based on the data collected from the World Development Indicators covering the period of 1981 to 2023. The results showed that trade openness and exchange rate exerted a significant negative effect on inflation in Nigeria while exchange rate showed a significant positive effect. The study concluded that financial openness had a positive significant effect on inflation while trade openness and exchange rate exerted a significant negative effect. The need for government to review their foreign trade policies in such a way that the importation of both finished and intermediate goods and services from the rest of the world can be significantly reduced by boosting local production was recommended. The study offers two-folds contributions. It provides new information on the factors that determine inflation and it specifically shows the nexus among trade and financial openness. The findings therefore revealed that higher trade and financial openness raises inflation implying openness-induced inflation. The findings from the study will be of practical value to policy makers such as those in the fiscal authorities and the Central Bank of Nigeria in devising policies to tame the current inflationary pressure in Nigeria

Abstract: Background and purpose: Intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) enables generation of conformal dose plans with organ at risk (OAR) sparing potential. However, pelvic IMPT robustness is challenged by inter-fraction motion caused by constant anatomical variations. In this study, the dosimetric impact of inter-fraction motion on target coverage and dose to OAR was quantified in the prospective phase II study ReRad-II on dose-escalated proton reirradiation for locally recurrent rectal cancer (LRRC). Materials and methods: The inter-fraction motion robustness was assessed for the initial twelve patients enrolled in the ReRad-II study. Patients with resectable LRRC were assessed for neoadjuvant IMPT (55 Gy(RBE)/44Fx) and unresectable recurrences for definitive IMPT (57.5–65 Gy(RBE)/ 46-52Fx). Target coverage and dose to OAR were assessed for robustly optimised three-field IMPT, on 12 plan computerized tomography (CT) scans (pCT) − and 47 repetitive control CT scans (cCTs) during the treatment. The target coverage and doses to OAR were re-calculated on each cCT and the mean dose ratio (pCT/cCT-ratio) and target coverage (V95%) was evaluated. Results: The target coverage was robust with a mean dose pCT/cCT-ratio of 1.00 (+/-1%). The V95% target coverage for every cCT were above the accepted worst-case scenario in the robust evaluation. Considerable variation in bladder-, bowel bag-, and bowel loop volume was observed. The OAR with the largest variation in ratio was the bladder (pCT/cCT-ratio: 1.3 (range: 0.5–4.7). Conclusions: IMPT for dose-escalated reirradiation of LRRC provided anatomically robust target coverage despite OAR changes. Inter-fraction motion resulted in OAR doses varying within clinically acceptable range.

Abstract: Objective. Elaboration of a model to assess the risk of radicalisation in adolescence. Background. The problem of radicalisation in adolescence is one of the most important problems in modern society, the search for mechanisms of radicalisation, as well as the development of preventive measures are in the focus of attention of researchers. Methodology. In the logic of the social identity approach and based on the uncertainty-identity theory of M. Hogg, a model for assessing the risk of radicalisation in adolescence is formulated and outlined. Conclusions. The formulated model for assessing the risk of radicalisation in adolescence postulates: individuals with multiple social identities and individuals without multiple social identities differ in groups that attract them (groups that provide them with meaningful positive social identity): those without multiple social identities have a preference for a group that would give them an clear and certain prototype.

Abstract: Summary: Introduction: Few studies have examined the effectiveness of nutrition interventions in municipal COPD rehabilitation programs. The objectives of this study were to examine the feasibility of implementation in practice (primary) and the feasibility of study methods and potential effectiveness (secondary) of a multidisciplinary dietary intervention offered to patients who start municipal rehabilitations program. Methods: This study was a single arm intervention study with a pre-post design. Participant were recruited from five different municipal rehabilitation centers and received three individualized dietary counselling's. The primary outcome was retention, compliance to the intervention and complement of data collection. Secondary outcomes included changes in dietary intake, body composition and physical function. Analysis of the primary and secondary outcomes was primarily based on descriptive statistics. Results: In total, 111 (77%) of 145 eligible patients from five different municipalities consented to participate. Of them 99 (89%) completed. Before the intervention 67 (63%) of the participants had 75% or more of their requirement of energy covered, and 48 (45%) had 75% or more of their protein requirements covered. At the end of the intervention, 76 (77%) of the participants had 75% or more coverage of energy requirements and 80 (83%) had 75% or more coverage of their protein requirements. In general, the level of completeness was high. Conclusion: We found recruitment to be feasible, a high rate of retention, a high compliance to the intervention and high completeness of the data collection.

13. Uncertainty in the numerical prediction of the tangential velocity in axial turbines at part load operations: A parametric study

Abstract: Numerical simulations of axial hydraulic turbines away from the best efficiency point are challenging. Previous studies especially show difficulties predicting the tangential velocity at Part Load (PL) operating conditions, where the swirl is high, in comparison to experiments. This is a reoccurring problem, and it is essential to understand, as the high tangential velocity is a fundamental characteristic of the flow in hydraulic turbines and is directly related to the swirling flow stability and the turbine’s power output. The objective of this study is to numerically investigate and understand the origin of the tangential velocity deviation from experimental results by performing simulations with the finite volume method of an axial turbine operated at PL. A parametric study is performed to address the abovementioned. Specifically, the effects of the blade clearance, blade angle, flow rate, and different turbulence models are studied on this issue. Results are analyzed by comparing the predicted axial and tangential velocity profiles and torque to experimentally obtained values. Primarily the runner inter-blades flow is studied as there is a knowledge gap. In addition, the physical phenomena responsible for head losses are studied in detail. Results show that the model can predict the flow relatively well at optimal flow conditions with low swirl but has problems at part load; the tangential velocity between the runner blades is underestimated by ∼20%. The undervalued head losses are the root cause. They result in an overestimated torque and an underestimated tangential velocity as the runner extracts too much energy from the fluid. A small modeling error of 0.5° in the blade angle and a change of 3% in the flow rate significantly affect the tangential velocity and torque prediction. The studied parameters must be considered carefully when building a numerical model.

Abstract: Charged-particle jet yields have been measured in semicentral Pb–Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision sNN=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. These yields are reported as a function of the jet transverse momentum, and further classified by their angle with respect to the event plane and the event shape, characterized by ellipticity, in an effort to study the path-length dependence of jet quenching. Jets were reconstructed at midrapidity from charged-particle tracks using the anti-kT algorithm with resolution parameters R = 0.2 and 0.4, with event-plane angle and event-shape values determined using information from forward scintillating detectors. The results presented in this letter show that, in semicentral Pb–Pb collisions, there is no significant difference between jet yields in predominantly isotropic and elliptical events. However, out-of-plane jets are observed to be more suppressed than in-plane jets. Further, this relative suppression is greater for low transverse momentum (< 50 GeV/c) R = 0.2 jets produced in elliptical events, with out-of-plane to in-plane jet-yield ratios varying up to 5.2σ between different event-shape classes. These results agree with previous studies indicating that jets experience azimuthally anisotropic suppression when traversing the QGP medium, and can provide additional constraints on the path-length dependence of jet energy loss.

15. Ferrimagnetic transition, relaxor ferroelectric and optical properties in tungsten bronze Ba6MnNb9O30 ceramics

Abstract: The structural, magnetic, ferroelectric, dielectric and optical properties of Ba6MnNb9O30 (BMNO) and Ba6Mn0.5Co0.5Nb9O30 (BMCNO) ceramics were investigated. The samples can be indexed by a tetragonal lattice and the space group of P4bm with the presence of a tiny amount of impurity phase Ba1.04NbO3. The sample BMNO undergoes a short-range ferrimagnetic-like transition at 43 K originating from the spin canting of the antiferromagnetic coupling between the adjacent Mn2+ and Mn3+ based sublattices via the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, whereas the sample BMCNO exhibits a local short-range antiferromagnetic state with the presence of weak ferromagnetic ordering. Both samples show the relaxor ferroelectric nature. The sample BMCNO possesses a superior energy storage property with a total energy density of 1.58 J/cm3 and a conversion efficiency of 74.5 %, which can be mainly ascribed to the improved densification and the reduced oxygen vacancies. Two different dielectric relaxations are discussed in term of the Vogel-Fulcher law. In addition, all samples have two different absorption edges and the optical band gaps are determined to be about 2.2 eV and 2.8 eV.

16. Nanoarchitectonics of WLC-H3PO4–MnFe2O3 nanocomposite for latent fingerprint detection

Abstract: Carbon-based material powders have been applied in fingerprints development. However, sustaining fluorescence in solid substances remains difficult due to the severe emission suppression of carbon-based compounds in solid-state materials. This study is the first to report on the use of activated wool char coated on manganese-doped iron oxide nanoparticle (WLC-H3PO4–MnFe2O3) as a novel nanocomposite (nCOM) for latent fingerprint (LAFPs) detection via the powder dusting approach. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDS), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) were used to analyze this nanocomposite. The nanocomposite produced good LAFP pictures on non-porous substrates such as aluminium foil and aluminium sheets. Moreover, this nanocomposite could be utilized as a labeling agent and could aid in the detection of LFP under visible light by providing distinct readability ridges and high-contrast fingerprint pictures.

Abstract: There's limited evidence of the potential benefits of cardiopulmonary and metabolic rehabilitation (CPMR) in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) or mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF) and coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of CPMR on the myocardial ischemia response (MIR), exercise-induced arrhythmias (EIA), New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class, heart rate recovery (HRR), Borg CR10 perceived symptoms, and the SF-36 physical and mental health summary scores. A prospective cohort study was conducted with 106 patients undergoing 12 weeks of CPMR who completed two exercise tests pre- and post-CPMR: 1) maximum incremental test (CPX) and 2) submaximal constant load test (SUB). After CPMR, the effects on MIR, EIA, NYHA functional class, and HRR during both tests were analyzed. Abstract: The pseudorapidity dependence of elliptic (v2), triangular (v3), and quadrangular (v4) flow coefficients of charged particles measured in Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sNN=5.02TeV and in Xe–Xe collisions at sNN=5.44TeV with ALICE at the LHC are presented. The measurements are performed in the pseudorapidity range −3.5

Abstract: Summary: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is associated with both extracellular amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques and intracellular tau-containing neurofibrillary tangles (NFT). We characterized the behavioral, metabolic and lipidomic phenotype of the 5xFADxTg30 mouse model which contains overexpression of both Aβ and tau. Our results independently reproduce several phenotypic traits described previously for this model, while providing additional characterization. This model develops many aspects associated with AD including frailty, decreased survival, initiation of aspects of cognitive decline and alterations to specific lipid classes and molecular lipid species in the plasma and brain. Notably, some sex-specific differences exist in this model and motor impairment with aging in this model does compromise the utility of the model for some movement-based behavioral assessments of cognitive function. These findings provide a reference for individuals interested in using this model to understand the pathology associated with elevated Aβ and tau or for testing potential therapeutics for the treatment of AD.

22. Assessing the Risk of Radicalisation in Adolescents and Young Adults: Some Empirical Evidence

Abstract: Based on M. Hogg’s uncertainty-identity theory, a radicalisation risk assessment model was formulated. The aim of the presented study was to test the model for assessing the risk of radicalisation in adolescents and young people. A total of 580 adolescents and young people aged from 14 to 27 years (M=17.32, SD=1.66) took part in the study; 392 respondents were female, 7 respondents did not indicate their gender. The main method of the study was a survey in the form of a questionnaire. The risk assessment model got partial empirical support. For further validation of the model it was proposed to implement the following steps: 1) to identify the particularities of social identities in a subsample of schoolchildren; 2) to analyse the characteristics of the groups with which schoolchildren and students identify themselves; 3) based on the results of the most recent studies, it is proposed to use the method of social identity mapping, which demonstrates its advantages over traditional ways of measuring social identity.

Abstract: Many contemporary authors addressed digital and online education, competencies, and lifelong learning. However, less is said about the importance of interpersonal relationships, even though they are essential for preserving the sustainability of education. The research aims to examine the field of human relations. To achieve this goal, the theory of organisational and social psychology was used. Relations can only be implemented through interpersonal dialogue. From an environmental perspective, both subjective and objective factors were determined to define the strength of the relationship. It was concluded that the teacher’s personality is the key to success at all levels of education. It is justified that the result of curricula’s central regulation is that the education of tomorrow’s professionals is directed by today’s professionals, who often have an interest in providing what is needed now rather than what may be needed in the future. It is proved that it is not enough for students to be aware of the academic mission, nor for the university to be a kind of training site for the labour market. From a socio-psychological perspective, it was disclosed that teaching quality mattered most, but subject to the theory of organisational psychology. The introduced materials can be utilized by universities to work on the nature of graduates’ preparation through the advancement of their character. Considering various approaches to the organization of education participants’ activities and characteristics of their self-development, the model for the formation of the value system of future teachers will make it possible to provide conditions for the individualization of training paths.

24. Se Inter-Diffusion Limits Absorber Layer Grain Growth in CdSe-CdTe Photovoltaics

Abstract: Diffusion of Se from the CdSe window layer into the CdTe absorber improves the short circuit current density by narrowing the band gap and increasing the carrier lifetime. Thicker CdSe layers, however, show a dramatic loss in photocurrent collection due to Se over-alloying. Electron microscopy investigations show that this decrease in performance is due to the formation of small grains (∼783 nm average diameter), which exhibit grain boundary porosity in the Se inter-diffusion region. The larger grain boundary area and void free surfaces give rise to higher levels of nonradiative recombination, and therefore, a lower photocurrent. It is proposed that the small grain size is due to a drag force exerted by segregated Se solute atoms on a moving grain boundary, while faster Se diffusion along the grain boundaries results in vacancy build up and porosity due to the Kirkendall effect. The results indicate that the device processing conditions must be carefully controlled such that the negative effects of Se alloying (i.e., smaller grains, Kirkendall voids) do not undermine its benefits.

Abstract: ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration on activation and apoptosis of primordial follicles. There was no difference in the total number of follicles as well as in the different types of follicles. Furthermore, the LPS challenge didn’t modulate the expression of genes related with ovarian reserve (HAM), oocyte survival (Survivin), activation rate (Pten, KIT, KITL1, KITL2, AKT1, SIRT1), and follicular abnormalities. Therefore, the LPS exposure with 24h interval had no effect on activation rate and primordial follicles abnormalities, and also had no effect on expression of anti-apoptotic genes and genes related with ovarian reserve, oocyte survival, activation rate, and primordial follicles abnormalities.

26. Utilizing scientometric analysis to evaluate indicators of quality research at the institutional level: A case study of UEA, a young Central African university

Abstract: The recognition and reputation of scientists and academic institutions are well-established in the field of scientometrics. However, these aspects face criticism in regions with limited information access and considered underdeveloped. In this study, we aimed to discuss the research performance of young universities (YU) in these challenging contexts. Despite financial, socio-economic, and political struggle, research in these YU has not stagnated and has even produced renowned scientists with global reputation. Our focus is on a case study of a Congolese YU, the Université Evangélique en Afrique (UEA), operating in a conflict-affected zone. The results showed that factors such as capacity building, infrastructure development, funding opportunities, collaborative partnerships, monitoring and evaluation are the main factors boosting the institution viability. Other important factors included scientific publication dynamics, community engagement, and policies for long-term sustainability, and should be reinforced in young central Africa universities to secure prominent positions in the global arena. The case study of UEA demonstrated that there is still room for revitalizing education and research in YU in the Global South. By accumulating citations and calculating the H-index using tools such as “Publish or Perish” and Scopus, this study suggests that platforms such as Google Scholar or ResearchGate alone are inadequate for evaluating research in academic institutions and researchers. Efforts are needed in these YU to promote quality research and minimize waste of data by publishing in predatory journals. This study also suggests that though scientometric indicators are effective in securing a prominent position in the global arena for YU, they are not solely adequate. Grey reports should also be integrated to assess YU's community engagement and real impact of conducted research at the local and national levels. Despite challenges, these academic institutions provide valuable services to the community, and its researchers actively collaborate on research projects at regional, continental, and global scales. This study contribute to the limited existing literature on quality of education and research in developing central Africa regions by providing a comprehensive understanding through a detailed case study.

28. CQTDs/SiO2NPs nanocomposite for Pb2+ and Cd2+ remediation and reuse applications in LFP detection and photocatalysis

Abstract: Due to their propensity to bioaccumulate, lead and cadmium, two hazardous heavy metals, can seriously disrupt the ecosystem. These metals have the potential to cause major environmental and human health problems. Herein, carbon quantum dots were used to coat silica nanoparticles to create a brand-new nanocomposite called CQTDs/SiO2NPs. Cd2+ and Pb2+ ions were effectively removed from water and preconcentrated using the produced nanocomposite. The novel nanocomposite was characterized using SEM, TEM, FT-IR, XRD, and XRF. The bending vibration of Si–O–Si/Si–O–C and Si–OH are responsible for the FT-IR bands that were detected in the nanocomposite at 1041 and 954 cm−1, respectively. XRD demonstrated that the silica nanoparticles were amorphous. Additionally, SEM and TEM analysis revealed the nanocomposite's shape, which was determined to be spherical with minimal agglomeration.While XPS demonstrated the binding energy of the functional group present in the composite and further confirmed the metal loaded onto the adsorbent. On CQTDs/SiO2NPs nanocomposite, the optimum pH and dosage were 8 and 0.2 g respectively. The highest Cd2+ and Pb2+ ion adsorption capabilities are 14.87 and 38.49 mg g −1, respectively. The use of the nanocomposite resulted in an exothermic, physical and non-spontaneous adsorption that closely resembled the Langmuir equilibrium isotherm and the second-order kinetics. The metal loaded adsorbent used as a fingerprint labelling agent displayed clear fingerprint ridges and degraded the sulfamethoxazole (SMX) for up to 90 %. The prepared composite has proven to be coherent in heavy metal removal and can thus be reused in Latent fingerprint and photocatalysis applications. The reuse of the nanocomposite in the above-mentioned applications is an alternative solution to avoid secondary pollution.

Abstract: Objective: Assess the perceived protection afforded by a range of COVID-19 vaccines in immune-mediated inflammatory diseases patients previously vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2. Study design: Survey. Methods: On-line cross-sectional survey aimed at evaluating the perceived protection (and its determinants) afforded by a range of COVID-19 vaccines among immune-mediated inflammatory diseases previously vaccinated for COVID-19. Results: Out of 493 eligible respondents who lived in Brazil, 397 (80.5%) were confident that their primary vaccination series would protect them against severe COVID-19. In multivariate analysis, only overlapping immune-mediated inflammatory diseases remained (negatively) associated with the perception of protection. Conclusions: No influence was found between COVID-19 vaccine types and the perception of protection after initial vaccinations.

31. Long-term outcomes of combined optimized YAG-laser trabeculostomy and selective laser trabeculoplasty for primary open-angle glaucoma

Patients and Methods: this study enrolled three groups of patients. Group 1 (study group, prospective) included 87 patients (87 eyes) with early and moderate POAG before and after optimized YAG-laser trabeculostomy. Group 2 (control, prospective) included 78 patients (78 eyes) with early and moderate POAG before and after selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT). Group 3 (control) included 60 healthy individuals (60 eyes). A technique to determine the topography of the collector channels and Schlemm's canal was developed to perform YAG-laser trabeculostomy. The location of the collector channels was determined with regard to Schlemm's canal using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT). Patients were followed up after 1 day, 1, 6, 12, and 24 months. Results: after combined optimized YAG-laser trabeculostomy and SLT, a significant IOP-lowering effect (reduction in IOP level by 30.1%) was reported as early as day 1 after surgery. Meanwhile, after SLT, the maximum IOP-lowering effect (by 21.5%) was observed only 1 month after surgery. Over a year, a gradual decrease in the IOP-lowering effect (17.2%) was reported after SLT. After optimized YAG-laser trabeculostomy, the IOP-lowering effect was stable (by 30.1%) being 26.2% after 2 years. When comparing the percentage of IOP-lowering regimen, group 1 (after optimized YAG-laser trabeculostomy) patients used less combined medications (by 27.7%) than group 2 (after SLT) patients. Moreover, IOP-lowering therapy was canceled in 18.4% and 10.3% of patients, respectively. Conclusion: YAG-laser and OCT optimize trabeculostomy by providing an alternative non-invasive laser treatment for patients with early and advanced POAG. Optimized YAG-laser trabeculostomy along with SLT (in contrast to SLT alone) reduces IOP faster, provides a more significant and stable IOP-lowering effect, and allows the surgery to be performed in the projection of the collector channels more accurately using acceptable laser energy values. 32. Advancements in end-to-end isolated Kannada ASR system by combining robust noise elimination technique and TDNN

Abstract: The demonstration of the latest enhancements in the end-to-end (E2E) isolated Kannada automatic speech recognition (ASR) system, achieved by combining a robust background noise elimination technique and a time delay neural network (TDNN), is presented in this work. An E2E Kannada ASR system consists of an interactive voice response system (IVRS), ASR models, and databases containing weather and agricultural commodity prices information. In the earlier spoken query system (SQS), the presence of babble, street noise, and other background noises led to a decrease in both offline and online speech recognition accuracies. To properly train the models, we increase the size of the database by collecting the Kannada speech data from an additional 500 farmers under real-time conditions. Moreover, the proposed noise elimination technique is employed to enhance the degraded speech data. Additionally, the efficacy of the TDNN is explored to improve the recognition accuracy of ASR models and the SQS system.The outcomes of the proposed speech enhancement algorithm demonstrate the absence of audible musical noise and other types of background noises in enhanced NOIZEUS and isolated Kannada speech databases. Leveraging Kannada language resources and the amalgamation of the proposed noise reduction technique and TDNN, a significant 1.1% enhancement in speech recognition accuracy is achieved in comparison with the previously developed deep neural network-hidden Markov model (DNN-HMM) based SQS. The enhanced isolated E2E ASR SQS system undergoes testing by 500 farmers, enabling them to access real-time agricultural commodity prices and weather forecasting information in their native Kannada language/dialects. This practical validation highlights the applicability and effectiveness of our advancements in real-world scenarios. Abstract: We recently developed a novel keratin-derived protein (KDP) rich in cysteine, glycine, and arginine, with the potential to alter tissue redox status and insulin sensitivity. The KDP was tested in 35 human adults with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in a 14-wk randomised controlled pilot trial comprising three 2×20 g supplemental protein/day arms: KDP-whey (KDPWHE), whey (WHEY), non-protein isocaloric control (CON), with standardised exercise. With KDPWHE supplementation there was good and very-good evidence for moderate-sized increases in insulin-stimulated glucose clearance rate (GCR; 26%; 90% confidence limits, CL 2%, 49%) and skeletal-muscle microvascular blood flow (46%; 16%, 83%), respectively, and good evidence for increased insulin-stimulated sarcoplasmic GLUT4 translocation (18%; 0%, 39%) vs CON. In contrast, WHEY did not effect GCR (-2%; -25%, 21%) and attenuated HbA1c lowering (14%; 5%, 24%) vs CON. KDPWHE effects on basal glutathione in erythrocytes and skeletal muscle were unclear, but in muscle there was very-good evidence for large increases in oxidised peroxiredoxin isoform 2 (oxiPRX2) (19%; 2.2%, 35%) and good evidence for lower GPx1 concentrations (-40%; -4.3%, -63%) vs CON; insulin stimulation, however, attenuated the basal oxiPRX2 response (4%; -16%, 24%), and increased GPx1 (39%; -5%, 101%) and SOD1 (26%; -3%, 60%) protein expression. Effects of KDPWHE on oxiPRX3 and NRF2 content, phosphorylation of capillary eNOS and insulin-signalling proteins upstream of GLUT4 translocation AktSer437 and AS160Thr642 were inconclusive, but there was good evidence for increased IRSSer312 (41%; 3%, 95%), insulin-stimulated NFκB-DNA binding (46%; 3.4%, 105%), and basal PAK-1Thr423/2Thr402 phosphorylation (143%; 66%, 257%) vs WHEY. Our findings provide good evidence to suggest that dietary supplementation with a novel edible keratin protein in humans with T2DM may increase glucose clearance and modify skeletal-muscle tissue redox and insulin sensitivity within systems involving peroxiredoxins, antioxidant expression, and glucose uptake.

Abstract: In this paper, we present recent improvements incorporated into an earlier speech encoding system that combined spectral subtraction with voice activity detection (SS-VAD) and linear predictive coding (LPC). The presence of background noise in the speech data reduces the speech audibility, quality, and intelligibility. In the previously proposed system, musical and other types of noises had an adverse effect on encoding performance under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. To address this issue, we propose a technique by amalgamating the minimum mean square error-spectrum power estimator based on the zero-crossing (MMSE-SPZC) and LPC for the development of a noise robust encoding system. The performance evaluation is done for noisy and enhanced encoded speech data using perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ), composite measures (CM), and the normalized covariance metric (NCM). The newly proposed encoding system has provided better PESQ, CM, and NCM values for various types of noises at different SNR levels compared to the earlier reported SS-VAD and LPC-based system. In addition to performance evaluation, we also present the complexity of the computation and memory requirements for both the proposed and existing algorithms. The source code of the algorithms used in this work are made publicly available.1

Abstract: The aim of research is to reduce the utilization of water by irrigating the agricultural fields that have low moisture level through the implementation of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). The ARM-based irrigation solution consists of a Solar Tracking System, Wireless Information Unit (WIU), WSN and Remote Access. The Solar Tracking System utilizes maximum solar energy by using Light Dependent Resistor(LDR) to track the sun. The electric energy produced is stored in the battery which powers the ARM processor. Wireless Information Unit will collect the sensor information from Wireless Sensor Network through the use of Wi-Fi. The system monitors soil-moisture and controls the flow of water using a solenoid valve depending upon the set threshold. In the tank, Ultra Sonic sensor identifies the water level controlled by the WIU. An Android application helps the farmer to monitor the water flow and soil moisture remotely. The proposed water management methodologies for agriculture optimizes the water usage and such practices maintain the crop health, keep yield intact, and avoids human intervention. In this proposed system, soil moisture is maintained appropriately to ensure that a good harvest is obtained which in turn preserves different types of nutrients.

36. Identifying fish assemblages in tropical lagoon ecosystem: First record from Luang Island, South-west Maluku Indonesia

Abstract: The aim of this study was to record demersal species from lagoon in Luang Island, a small and remote island in Maluku, Indonesia. Quantitative and qualitative methods were employed with the assistance of the local fishers using 4 different methods of fishing: gillnets, spear guns, traps, and handlines. Fisher knowledge informed fish abundance and frequency of occurrence. A total of 348 individual fish distributed across 53 species were recorded from the catch of 4 gear types. Bray-Curtis similarity scores of fish assemblages at different habitats was ranged from 7.19% to 10.35%. The nMDS bi-plot visualized a distinct dimension with which to allocate 3 habitats separately from the sand-seagrass habitat. Significant similarity of species at 4 different habitats (ANOSIM R2 = 0.124, P = 0.002) suggested that the habitat parameter was not able to predict different communities of fish. This paper is the first contribution on the composition of lagoon ichthyofaunal in Southwest Maluku Regency. Wise attitude towards marine resource exploitation such as traditional conservation, less fishing pressure and marine culture will maintain the healthy ichthyofaunal assemblages in a tropical lagoon ecosystem.

37. Grain-Boundary Structural Relaxation in Sb_{2}Se_{3} Thin-Film Photovoltaics

Abstract: Grain boundaries play an important role in the efficiency of thin-film photovoltaics, where the absorber layer is invariably polycrystalline. Density-functional-theory simulations have previously identified a “self-healing” mechanism in Sb_{2}Se_{3} that passivates the grain boundaries. During “self-healing,” extensive structural relaxation at the grain boundary removes the band-gap electronic defect states that give rise to high carrier recombination rates. In this work, lattice imaging in a transmission electron microscope is used to uncover evidence for the theoretically proposed structural relaxation in Sb_{2}Se_{3}. The strain measured along the [010] crystal direction is found to be dependent on the nature of the grain-boundary plane. For a (010) grain boundary, the strain and structural relaxation is minimal, since no covalent bonds are broken by termination of the grain. On the other hand, strains of up to approximately 4% extending approximately 2 nm into the grain interior are observed for a (041) grain boundary, where grain termination results in significant structural relaxation due to the ideal atomic coordination being disrupted. These results are consistent with theory and suggest that Sb_{2}Se_{3} may have a high level of grain-boundary-defect tolerance.

Abstract: The interaction between Λ baryons and kaons/antikaons is a crucial ingredient for the strangeness S=0 and S=−2 sector of the meson–baryon interaction at low energies. In particular, the ΛK‾ might help in understanding the origin of states such as the Ξ(1620), whose nature and properties are still under debate. Experimental data on Λ–K and Λ–K‾ systems are scarce, leading to large uncertainties and tension between the available theoretical predictions constrained by such data. In this Letter we present the measurements of Λ–K⊕+Λ‾–K− and Λ–K⊕−Λ‾–K+ correlations obtained in the high-multiplicity triggered data sample in pp collisions at s=13 TeV recorded by ALICE at the LHC. The correlation function for both pairs is modeled using the Lednický–Lyuboshits analytical formula and the corresponding scattering parameters are extracted. The Λ–K⊕−Λ‾–K+ correlations show the presence of several structures at relative momenta k⁎ above 200 MeV/c, compatible with the Ω baryon, the Ξ(1690), and Ξ(1820) resonances decaying into Λ–K− pairs. The low k⁎ region in the Λ–K⊕−Λ‾–K+ also exhibits the presence of the Ξ(1620) state, expected to strongly couple to the measured pair. The presented data allow to access the ΛK+ and ΛK− strong interaction with an unprecedented precision and deliver the first experimental observation of the Ξ(1620) decaying into ΛK−.

Abstract: In innovative materials engineering, one of the most important areas of research is the process of incorporating the appropriate combinations of reinforcements into matrix material. These innovative materials have enhanced strength as well as improved wear properties. In light of this, the purpose of the current work was to construct hybrid composites utilizing Al2618 by integrating varied quantities of Boron Carbide (B4C), silicon nitride (Si3N4), and graphite particles by a liquid casting. The manufactured composites were subjected to scanning electron microscopy coupled with XRD analysis, micro hardness test, and wear evaluations. An examination of the microstructure of the material has shown that the reinforcement is evenly dispersed throughout the base alloy. The impact of different reinforcing mixtures on mechanical characteristics and wear behavior was also investigated.

40. Role of Causal Attribution and State Self-Esteem in Emergence of Brand Commitment

Abstract: Based on the analysis of Kisler's commitment model and Weiner's attribution theory, a hypothetical chain of events resulting in brand commitment was offered: focus of attention → causal dimension → self-esteem → commitment. Its existence was tested in two studies that manipulated the focus of attention of participants in order to strengthen the weight of one of the two causal dimensions, attribution of choice results to internal/external causes (Experiment 1) and attribution of choice results to stable/unstable causes (Experiment 2). 60 students (29 men) and 72 students (29 men), respectively participated in studies. Results were analyzed using ANOVA and path analysis and supported the existence of the assumed chain of events resulting in commitment in both studies. At the same time, as expected, such a chain of events was more pronounced in the situation of success in Experiment 1 and in the situation of failure in Experiment 2. The advantages of using the attribution theory to explain the commitment and prospects for further research in this area are discussed.

41. A retrospective study of acute kidney injury in dogs with renal resistive index as a prognostic indicator

Abstract: Doppler ultrasonography is relatively a new method for evaluation of the renal diseases in dogs. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of renal resistive index (RRI) in diagnosis and prognosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) in dogs and to ascertain its correlationwith other renal parameters. Twenty-seven dogs with AKI along with ten clinically healthy dogs were evaluated. The aetiology of AKI was multifactorial which included viper snake envenomation, pyometra, Babesiagibsoni infection, canine parvo viral infection, Ehrlichiacanis infection, leptospiral infection, bone meal poisoning and tetracycline-induced nephrotoxicity. Dogs with AKI were characterized into five gradesas per the guidelines provided by International Renal Interest Society.Parameters such asblood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, urine output, urine protein-creatinine (UPC) ratio and blood pressure were estimated. Both BUN and creatinine was significantly higher in affected dogs. Majority of the dogs with AKI were oliguric and had the presence of proteinuria, occult blood and leucocytes on urine dipstick examination. Urine Protein-Creatinine ratio was increased whereas no significant variation was noticed in blood pressure of dogs with AKI.B-mode ultrasonography of kidneys revealedrenomegaly, hyperechoic cortex, decreased cortico-medullary differentiation and loss of architecture in majority of the dogs with AKI. Renal resistive index was significantly increased inAKI and a positive correlation was established between RRI and serumcreatinine but not with UPC ratio, blood pressure and size of kidneys. Re-evaluation of RRIseven days post treatment showed considerablereduction. It wasconcludedthat an increase in RRIwas associated with severity of renal parenchymal injuryin AKI and reduction of RRI post-treatment indicated favorable prognosis.

Abstract: An evaluation of the radiation shielding performance of high-Z-particle-loaded polylactic acid (PLA) composite materials was pursued. Specimens were produced via fused deposition modeling (FDM) using copper-PLA, steel-PLA, and BaSO4-PLA composite filaments containing 82.7, 75.2, and 44.6 wt% particulate phase contents, respectively, and were tested under broad-band flash x-ray conditions at the Sandia National Laboratories HERMES III facility. The experimental results for the mass attenuation coefficients of the composites were found to be in good agreement with GEANT4 simulations carried out using the same exposure conditions and an atomistic mixture as a model for the composite materials. Further simulation studies, focusing on the Cu-PLA composite system, were used to explore a shield design parameter space (in this case, defined by Cu-particle loading and shield areal density) to assess performance under both high-energy photon and electron fluxes over an incident energy range of 0.5–15 MeV. Based on these results, a method is proposed that can assist in the visualization and isolation of shield parameter coordinate sets that optimize performance under targeted radiation characteristics (type, energy). For electron flux shielding, an empirical relationship was found between areal density (AD), electron energy (E), composition and performance. Abstract: The article examines a clinical case of Wernicke's encephalopathy in a 34-year-old man who abused alcohol. The initial impression of the patient's condition was suspected of poisoning by surrogate alcohol, botulinum toxin, multiple sclerosis, Lyme disease, acute multiple encephalomyelitis, etc., because the anamnestic data on alcohol abuse could not be detected immediately. Specific triad of clinical manifestations - cognitive decline, ocular symptoms (nystagmus, diplopia, ptosis), ataxia, which appeared after alcohol abuse, specific changes on MRI (revealed damage to the thalamus with dilated ventricles and loss of density in mammillary bodies. As a rule, symmetrical in the midbrain, hypothalamus and cerebellum. Blood test for vitamin B1 confirmed the diagnosis.Treatment with vitamin B1 caused regression of symptoms, improved the patient's condition.Additional methods (history, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, blood for thyroid hormones and infectious pathogens) contributed to the differential diagnosis and exclusion of other diagnoses. Further in the article the analysis of clinical thinking in the process of diagnosis and differential diagnosis, establishment of this diagnosis in the historical aspect, unity and differences with Korsakov syndrome, epidemiological, pathogenetic, clinical, prognostic and treatment-and-prophylactic aspects of Wernicke's encephalopathy are presented.

Abstract: AimTo study the effects of advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF+) and enamel matrix derivative (EMD) compared to open flap debridement (OFD) alone in molar furcation sites grade II on clinical and wound healing parameters.Materials and methodsA randomized controlled trial was designed. Eligible patients were randomly allocated to one of three treatment groups: A-PRF+, EMD or OFD. The patients and clinical examiners were blinded for the treatment received. A minimally invasive microsurgical approach was performed for the three modalities. Clinical measurements were scored at baseline and 6 months post-operatively. The clinical healing of each furcation was scored via the Early Wound Healing Index on day 3, 1 week, 2 weeks and 6 weeks.Results17 patients (A-PRF+ n = 6, EMD n = 5, OFD n = 6) completed the 6 months of follow-up. The further completion of the trial had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In three patients in the A-PRF+ group, the grade II of the treated furcation regressed to grade I; the corresponding number in the EMD and OFD groups was zero and one respectively. Further, 3, 1 and 4 patients in the PRF, EMD and OFD groups respectively, showed a gain of bone level ≥1 mm. The defects in the A-PRF+ group showed delayed early healing compared to the EMD and OFD groups.ConclusionThe case series (RCT design) suggests a slight advantage for A-PRF+ over EMD and OFD, regarding the regressing of a furcation II to grade I; however this treatment showed delayed early wound healing compared to EMD or OFD.Clinical Trial Registrationhttps://www.isrctn.com/, identifier ISRCTN13520922.

46. Antimicrobial resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from patients with pneumonia during the COVID-19 pandemic and pre-pandemic periods in Northeast Brazil

Abstract: Healthcare-related infections caused by resistant microorganisms are a severe public health problem and are becoming increasingly prevalent in the hospital environment, especially Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This work aimed to evaluate the resistance profile of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to antimicrobials before the COVID-19 pandemic and during the pandemic period. Bacteria strains were obtained from tracheal aspiration, sputum, and bronchoalveolar lavage for diagnosis and phenotypic characterization. Matrix assisted laser-desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALD-TOF MS) was used to identify strains. Automated Phoenix and VITEK® 2 Compact system and the disc diffusion method were performed to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility profile. A total of 41,000 medical reports from adult patients with pneumonia were analyzed. Of these, 951 patients were positive for P. aeruginosa, of which 373 were related to the pre-pandemic period and 578 to the pandemic period. Older men (≥60 years) were more prevalent in both periods. P. aeruginosa strains were resistant to imipenem in both periods: 38.8 and 42.5%, respectively, followed by meropenem (34.2 and 39.2%), ciprofloxacin (33.6 and 36.7%), and levofloxacin (34.9 and 43.5%). Intensive care units had the highest percentage of affected patients (62 and 65%) compared with other sectors, with a prevalence of 71% in the public network before COVID-19 and 59% during the pandemic. Our data showed a prevalence of P. aeruginosa in elderly patients in both the pre-pandemic and pandemic periods. In addition, an increase in P. aeruginosa resistance to beta-lactams, quinolones, carbapenems, and cephalosporins was observed during the COVID-19 pandemic compared with the period before the pandemic, especially in ICUs.

Abstract: Background: A common complication after a DIEP flap reconstruction is the occurrence of fat necrosis due to inadequate flap perfusion zones. Intraoperative identification of ischemic zones in the DIEP flap could be optimized using indocyanine green near-infrared fluorescence angiography (ICG-NIR-FA). This randomized controlled trial aims to determine whether intraoperative ICG-NIR-FA for the assessment of DIEP flap perfusion decreases the occurrence of fat necrosis. Design/methods: This article describes the protocol of a Dutch multicenter randomized controlled clinical trial: the FAFI-trial. Females who are electively scheduled for autologous breast reconstruction using DIEP or muscle-sparing transverse rectus abdominis muscle (msTRAM) flaps are included. A total of 280 patients will be included in a 1:1 ratio between both study arms. In the intervention arm, the intraoperative assessment of flap perfusion will be based on both regular clinical parameters and ICG-NIR-FA. The control arm consists of flap perfusion evaluation only through the regular clinical parameters, while ICG-NIR-FA images are obtained during surgery for which the surgeon is blinded. The main study endpoint is the difference in percentage of clinically relevant fat necrosis between both study arms, evaluated two weeks and three months after reconstruction. Conclusion: The FAFI-trial, a Dutch multicenter randomized controlled clinical trial, aims to investigate the clinical added value of intraoperative use of standardized ICG-NIR-FA for assessment of DIEP/msTRAM flap perfusion in the reduction of fat necrosis. Abstract: Ferumoxytol (FMX) is an FDA-approved magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticle used to treat iron deficiency anemia that can also be used as an MR imaging agent in patients that can't receive gadolinium. Pharmacological ascorbate (P-AscH-; IV delivery; plasma levels ≈ 20 mM) has shown promise as an adjuvant to standard of care chemo-radiotherapy in glioblastoma (GBM). Since ascorbate toxicity mediated by H2O2 is enhanced by Fe redox cycling, the current study determined if ascorbate catalyzed the release of ferrous iron (Fe2+) from FMX for enhancing GBM responses to chemo-radiotherapy. Ascorbate interacted with Fe3O4 in FMX to produce redox-active Fe2+ while simultaneously generating increased H2O2 fluxes, that selectively enhanced GBM cell killing (relative to normal human astrocytes) as opposed to a more catalytically active Fe complex (EDTA-Fe3+) in an H2O2 – dependent manner. In vivo, FMX was able to improve GBM xenograft tumor control when combined with pharmacological ascorbate and chemoradiation in U251 tumors that were unresponsive to pharmacological ascorbate therapy. These data support the hypothesis that FMX combined with P-AscH- represents a novel combined modality therapeutic approach to enhance cancer cell selective chemoradiosentization in the management of glioblastoma.

Abstract: Leishmaniasis is a neglected disease that affects millions of people worldwide, and special attention should be given to treatment because the available drugs have limitations, which can lead to low therapeutic adherence and parasitic resistance. This study evaluated the activity of the bioactive naphthoquinones, lapachol and β-lapachone, against Leishmania amazonensis. The cell alterations were evaluated in vitro on promastigote and amastigote forms. The lethal dose (LD50) at 24, 48, and 72 h on the promastigote's forms using lapachol was 75.60, 72.82, and 58.85 μg/mL and for β-lapachone was 0.65, 1.24, and 0.71 μg/mL, respectively. The naphthoquinones significantly inhibited the survival rate of L. amazonensis amastigotes at 83.11, 57.59, and 34.95% for lapachol (82.28, 41.14, and 20.57 µg/mL), and 78.49, 83.25, and 80.22% for β-lapachone (3.26, 1.63, and 0.815 µg/mL). The compounds on the promastigote's forms led to the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, induced changes in the integrity of the membrane, caused damage to cells suggestive of the apoptotic process, and showed inhibition of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6 production. The results showed that these naphthoquinones are promising candidates for research on new drugs with anti-Leishmania activity derived from natural products.

Abstract: Systemic autoimmune myopathies (SAMs) are rare diseases that lead to muscle inflammation and may be associated with a variety of systemic manifestations. Although there is great heterogeneity in the spectrum of extra-muscular involvement in SAMs, interstitial lung disease (ILD) is the most frequent lung manifestation. SAM-related ILD (SAM-ILD) presents significant variations according to geographic location and temporal trends and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Several myositis autoantibodies have been discovered over the last decades, including antibodies targeting aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase enzymes, which are associated with a variable risk of developing ILD and a myriad of other clinical features. In this review, the most relevant topics regarding clinical manifestations, risk factors, diagnostic tests, autoantibodies, treatment, and prognosis of SAM-ILD are highlighted. We searched PubMed for relevant articles published in English, Portuguese, or Spanish from January 2002 to September 2022. The most common SAM-ILD patterns are nonspecific interstitial pneumonia and organizing pneumonia. The combination of clinical, functional, laboratory, and tomographic features is usually sufficient for diagnostic confirmation, without the need for additional invasive methods. Glucocorticoids remain the first-line treatment for SAM-ILD, although other traditional immunosuppressants, such as azathioprine, mycophenolate, and cyclophosphamide have demonstrated some efficacy and, therefore, have an important role as steroid-sparing agents.
