En este artículo se presentan los principales resultados obtenidos de nuestras investigaciones y prospecciones arqueológicas en los yacimientos medievales de Ghassasa (Cazaza), Tazouda (Tazuda) y Bādīs, en el Rif oriental (norte de Marruecos). La arqueología prehispánica de gran parte de la provincia de Misiones ha presentado un carácter discontinuo y con un desarrollo muy dispar a lo largo del territorio. En este espacio existen aún grandes áreas inexploradas, donde la escasez de información arqueológica ha sido suplida mediante la extrapolación de datos de otras áreas, o bien, trasladando acríticamente datos etnohistóricos al pasado. Con el objetivo de comenzar a revertir esta tendencia, se presentan en este trabajo los primeros resultados de las prospecciones arqueológicas desarrolladas en un área de conservación de importancia regional que no posee antecedentes de estudios sistemáticos previos, el Parque Provincial Moconá. Las prospecciones se realizaron siguiendo los principales ambientes geomorfológicos con el objetivo de obtener información sistemática sobre la distribución y variabilidad del registro arqueológico. Se detectaron tres nuevos sitios arqueológicos que representan diferentes momentos de la ocupación humana en el área y en los que fue posible recuperar una importante cantidad de restos líticos y de alfarería junto a restos de carbones. El estudio de estos materiales provee nueva información para la discusión de problemas clásicos de la arqueología misionera, como la antigüedad y las trayectorias tecnológicas de los artefactos bifaciales comúnmente conocidos como “hachas y clavas curvas” o el desarrollo de suelos antrópicos por parte de grupos guaraníes., In Misiones Province, Pre-Hispanic archaeological investigations have been discontinuous and show significative territorial biases. The lack of data in large unexplored sectors, has been supplemented with information extrapolated from other areas or by drawing inferences from ethnohistorical data. With the goal of reverting this trend, here we present the preliminary results of the first surveys developed in Moconá Provincial Park. Fieldwork was designed following the main geomorphological environments with the aim of gaining new and systematic information regarding variability and distribution of archaeological sites. We detected three new sites that represent different times of human occupation in the area, and recovered from them numerous lithic and pottery technological elements as well as charcoal remains. The analysis of these materials provides new data to discuss classical problems of Misiones archaeology such as the age of bifacial lithic tools usually known as “curved axes and cleaves” or the development of anthropic soils by guaraní populations., A arqueologia pré-hispânica de grande parte da província de Misiones apresentou um caráter descontínuo e com um desenvolvimento muito desigual ao longo do território. Neste espaço ainda existem grandes áreas inexploradas, onde a escassez de informações arqueológicas tem sido suprida pela extrapolação de dados de outras áreas, ou por transferência acrítica de dados etno-históricos para o passado. Com o objetivo de começar a reverter esta tendência, este artigo apresenta os primeiros resultados das prospecções arqueológicas realizadas em uma área de conservação de importância regional que não possui um histórico de estudos sistemáticos prévios, o Parque Provincial de Moconá. As prospecções foram realizadas seguindo os principais ambientes geomorfológicos a fim de obter informações sistemáticas sobre a distribuição e variabilidade do registro arqueológico. Foram detectados três novos sítios arqueológicos que representam diferentes momentos da ocupação humana na área, e nos quais foi possível recuperar uma importante quantidade de vestígios líticos e cerâmicos juntamente com vestígios de carvão. L’area del Golfo di Castellammare (Sicilia occidentale) è nota per le numerose fornaci di età romana. In questo articolo, si cercherà di ricostruire l’attività di un’officina destinata principalmente alla produzione di laterizi con bollo ΟΝΑΣΟΥ, databile fra III e I secolo a.C. Ricerche precedenti hanno permesso di riconoscere nel produttore di questi laterizi lo stesso Onasus Segestanus citato nelle Verrine di Cicerone e di localizzarne una possibile officina presso la Baia di San Cataldo. La scoperta di nuovi laterizi bollati e di scarti ceramici assume notevole importanza per una ricerca sugli ateliers ceramici del Golfo di Castellammare e della Piana di Partinico. Ne deriva un quadro aggiornato e ricco di prospettive di ricerca, relative all’espansione commerciale di Onasus nel corso del tempo e all’attività produttiva di altre fornaci, i cui manufatti potevano essere esportati o utilizzati localmente. The area of the Gulf of Castellamare (western Sicily) is well known for the several roman kilns. The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the productive activity of a workshop mainly manufacturing tiles with ΟΝΑΣΟΥ stamps, probably dating between the 3rd and the 1st century B.C. The previous researches permitted to recognize Onasus Segestanus, mentioned in Cicero’s Verrines, as the producer of these tiles and to localize a possible workshop in the Bay of St Cataldo. The discovery of new stamped tiles and ceramics wastes assume considerable importance for an investigation focused on the ceramic workshops in the Gulf of Castellamare and the Bay of St Cataldo. The result is an up-to-date picture rich in research perspectives, concerning the Onasus’s trade expansion during the time and the productive activity of other kilns, whose artefacts could be exported or locally employed.

A lo largo del s. XVIII y primera mitad del XIX el sílex se convirtió en materia prima estratégica para la fabricación de piedras de chispa utilizadas en distintas armas de fuego. El ejército español obtuvo buena parte de sus suministros del Reino de Granada y, a partir de 1760, de las canteras situadas cerca de Zaragoza, en el entorno del río Huerva, comarca que se convirtió en uno de los principales centros de producción como resultado del sistema de contratas establecido por la Corona para el suministro de más de un millón de piedras anuales. En el artículo presentamos las impresionantes huellas arqueológicas de aquellas explotaciones mineras –trincheras, galerías, pozos, escombreras...–, los lugares de transformación y la tecnología de talla empleada, junto con algunos datos documentales de la producción de estos ‘pedernaleros’, un oficio especializado y gremial, que se extinguió hacia mediados del XIX cuando las armas con llave de chispa quedaron obsoletas. Pero sobre todo queremos dar cuenta de un patrimonio extraordinariamente conservado y prácticamente desconocido que demanda su reconocimiento y puesta en valor., Throughout the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century, flint became a strategic raw material due to its use in the manufacture of gunflints for different firearms. The Spanish army obtained a large part of its supplies from the Kingdom of Granada –roughly the present day Province of Granada– and, since 1760, from the quarries located near Zaragoza around the Huerva River. This region became one of the main production centers as a result of the contracting system established by the Crown for the supply of more than one million stones per year. In the article we present the impressive archaeological footprints of those exploitations –trenches, galleries, pits, dumps…–, the processing places and the knapping technology used and some documentary data on the production and the specialized craftsmen known as pedernaleros. Pedernaleros craft and union trade died out in the mid-19th century when weapons with flintlock mechanism became obsolete. But, above all, we want to give an account for an extraordinarily preserved and practically unknown heritage that demands its recognition and enhancement.

The history of Samaria under Neo-Assyrian rule is usually a part of the general description of the land of Israel and the Levant. From these descriptions it seems that the expansion of the Neo-Assyrian Empire in the region of Samaria is well documented in the various historical and archaeological sources of this period. Numerous studies were carried out about the historical and archaeological aspects of this period in the land of Israel. Nevertheless, much of this research dealt with Judah, and only few researches were conducted on the Samaria region. These studies described the Samaria region as a whole unit, and did not distinguish between sub-units within Samaria. In this paper I will examine the history of the Samaria region after the Neo-Assyrian conquest, the organization of the Assyrian administration, and the extent of its influence in various areas within this region, considering updated data from archaeological surveys and excavations.

Статья посвящена изучению материалов архива выдающегося археолога М.Е. Фосс, которые имеют как научный, так и личный характер. Эти материалы дают нам представление о личности М.Е. Фосс. Главные ее качества – трудолюбие и организованность, помноженные на умение терпеть и преодолевать трудности, не предаваясь унынию. Они отчетливо прослеживаются по полевым записям, например, касающимся поездке на Летний берег Белого моря с коллегами холодным летом 1926 г., с морозами, северными ветрами, мошкой, дикими зверями и без оружия. Некоторые записи и рисунки, сохранившиеся в архиве, указывают на прекрасное чувство юмора М.Е. Фосс. В переписке с коллегами, местными краеведами и музейщиками она не делала различий, демонстрируя готовность оказать помощь и поддержку, дать добрый совет, будь то зеленый студент или маститый ученый. Она всегда старалась быть в стороне от советской идеологии, как в научной работе, так и в жизни, и всем сердцем любила природу, что очень сильно проявляется в ее лирических заметках, сделанных в ходе многочисленных экспедиций., The archive materials of the notable archaeologist, which have both scientific and private character, give us a possibility to reveal the traits of M.E. Foss’s personality. Her main features were diligence and self-control, multiplied by the ability to overcome difficulties with optimism. We can follow these dignities by her field notes, for example during the extremely difficult search trip to the White Sea shore in 1926 with her colleagues, during the cold northern summer, surrounded by wild animals, without guns. Some notes and drawings witness her perfect sense of humor. Exchanging letters with colleagues, local historians and museum employees, she frequently demonstrated the ability to give kind advice and friendly support, paying no attention to person’s position whether it was a student or an honored academician. She usually tried to stay away from the Soviet ideology restrictions both in her behavior and studies, and loved nature with all her heart, which is evident from her lyric fieldwork footnotes.

This article contains a report on the international conference organized by the University of Leiden in May 2015. According to its organizers, this conference has become the first Western European symposium dedicated to the study of the long history of the Golden Horde. The conference became a fruitful meeting place of the leading Russian and Tatar historians and archaeologists with their Western colleagues from the Netherlands, United Kingdom, United States of America, Hungary, Poland, and Finland. International participants of the Leiden conference discussed the most topical issues of historiography associated with eventful history of the Golden Horde. In particular, the conference participants paid special attention to the study of the administration of the ulus of Jochi that naturally combined governmental models of the Mongol Empire of the Chingizids with local administrative elements. A separate section of the conference was devoted to the analysis of the religious policy of the Golden Horde khans, where special attention was paid to the historiographical debate on the Islamization of the ulus of Jochi. The conference participants also paid considerable attention to the consideration of the material culture of the Golden Horde known both from written sources and, above all, from the materials of archaeological findings. Also, a number of reports of the confe­rence was devoted to foreign and domestic policies of the Golden Horde rulers, at the same time reflecting the central geopolitical role of the ulus of Jochi on the Eurasian continent and the high level of civilization of the Golden Horde. The main achievement of the Leiden conference was a statement on the need of deeper study of the Golden Horde history in order to overcome a number of stereotypes regarding misconceptions of the ulus of Jochi represented as backward and parasitic State formation. The conference participants agreed in general opinion about the necessity of similar academic symposiums to intensify international contacts between researchers of the Golden Horde history.

This paper presents some results of research activities conducted during the 2005-2008 fieldwork campaigns in the ancient territory of Hierapolis in Phrygia (Denizli Province, south-western Turkey). The research aimed at reconstructing the ancient topography and settlement patterns of the territory (previously not studied) from the Prehistoric times to the Ottoman age. During the archaeological surveys in the study area (the north-eastern sector of the Lykos valley and the Uzunp?nar plateau), some ancient villages of different dimensions in use between the Hellenistic age and the Roman Imperial period (some also in the Byzantine period) were identified and studied. In some cases, even their necropoleis were identified and documented, recording the types of tombs (tumuli, chambers, sarcophagi, chamosoria, pit graves) and their location in relation to the settlement area and the topography of the site. The collected funerary evidence is important new documentation to add to our knowledge of the necropoleis in ancient rural villages of southern Phrygia. It is also very interesting to note the presence, in some necropoleis, of isolated Hellenistic tumuli that could have belonged to the dominant classes of the rural communities, which had adopted the funerary typologies of the urban aristocracy.

The paper concerns some results of the research activities conducted during 2005-2007 in the ancient territory of Hierapolis in Phrygia, completing the reconstruction of the ancient topography and settlement from the Prehistoric to the Ottoman age. During archaeological surveys in the area surrounding the city, in the Lykos valley, and also more distant, on the broad plateau north of Hierapolis (between 5 and 17 km from the city), some isolated as well as grouped together tumuli of the Hellenistic and Early Imperial periods were found and studied. These tumuli belonged to rural villages of the indigenous populations that lived in the area south of the Meander river and constitute an important and new documentation of the characteristics of this burial type in southern Phrygia. In general, they have the same size and building characteristics as those in the necropoleis surrounding the city, but the ones on the plateau have less refined chambers and no remains of the crepidoma are preserved. Presumably, they belonged to the dominant classes of the rural communities which had adopted the funerary typologies of the urban aristocracy; perhaps these tumuli can also be considered as landmarks of the occupation of the chora by the Greek colonists that founded Hierapolis.
