Poor adherence to treatment contributes to increased severity of symptoms, morbidity, and mortality. The objective of this study was to establish the adherence of patients diagnosed with COPD by their devices for inhalation in a group of patients, Colombia.Patients and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of patients treated in the Colombian health system. Adherence to inhalation devices was evaluated with the TAI-10 instrument (Inhaler Adherence Test). A score of 50 points was considered good adherence.Results: A total of 500 patients from 84 cities were identified, with a median age of 79.0 years, and 59.2% were women. A total of 45% had GOLD B COPD, and 56.6% had good adherence. Average adherence was 47.4± 5.3 points, and no significant differences were found according to inhalation devices (p=0.949). Training performed by specialist physicians (OR: 1.75; 95% CI: 1.17– 2.62), use of an inhaler for less than 1 year (OR: 1.59; 95% CI: 1.04– 2.43), use of short-acting β 2-adrenergic agonists (OR: 1.58; 95% CI: 1.05– 2.38) and increased satisfaction with the inhalation device (OR: 1.09; 95% CI: 1.04– 1.14) were associated with good adherence, while those from the central region (OR: 0.55; 95% CI: 0.36– 0.83), who had a COPD evolution time of less than 5 years (OR: 0.57; 95% CI: 0.37– 0.98) and had diabetes mellitus (OR: 0.60; 95% CI: 0.37– 0.98) had lower adherence.Conclusion: Adherence to treatment with inhaled bronchodilators and glucocorticoids were not very high, with no significant differences by type of inhalation device. Forest disturbance and regrowth are key processes in forest dynamics, but detailed information on these processes is difficult to obtain in remote forests such as the Amazon. We used chronosequences of Landsat satellite imagery (Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper and Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus) to determine the sensitivity of surface reflectance from all spectral bands to windthrow, clear-cut, and clear-cut and burned (cut + burn) and their successional pathways of forest regrowth in the Central Amazon. We also assessed whether the forest demography model Functionally Assembled Terrestrial Ecosystem Simulator (FATES) implemented in the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) Land Model (ELM), ELM-FATES, accurately represents the changes for windthrow and clear-cut. The results show that all spectral bands from the Landsat satellites were sensitive to the disturbances but after 3 to 6 years only the near-infrared (NIR) band had significant changes associated with the successional pathways of forest regrowth for all the disturbances considered. In general, the NIR values decreased immediately after disturbance, increased to maximum values with the establishment of pioneers and early successional tree species, and then decreased slowly and almost linearly to pre-disturbance conditions with the dynamics of forest succession. Statistical methods predict that NIR values will return to pre-disturbance values in about 39, 36, and 56 years for windthrow, clear-cut, and cut + burn disturbances, respectively. The NIR band captured the observed, and different, successional pathways of forest regrowth after windthrow, clear-cut, and cut + burn. Consistent with inferences from the NIR observations, ELM-FATES predicted higher peaks of biomass and stem density after clear-cuts than after windthrows. ELM-FATES also predicted recovery of forest structure and canopy coverage back to pre-disturbance conditions in 38 years after windthrows and 41 years after clear-cut. The similarity of ELM-FATES predictions of regrowth patterns after windthrow and clear-cut to those of the NIR results suggests the NIR band can be used to benchmark forest regrowth in ecosystem models. Our results show the potential of Landsat imagery data for mapping forest regrowth from different types of disturbances, benchmarking, and the improvement of forest regrowth models.

There is large uncertainty whether Amazon forests will remain a carbon sink as atmospheric CO2 increases. Hence, we simulated an old-growth tropical forest using six versions of four terrestrial models differing in scale of vegetation structure and representation of biogeochemical (BGC) cycling, all driven with CO2 forcing from the preindustrial period to 2100. The models were benchmarked against tree inventory and eddy covariance data from a Brazilian site for present-day predictions. All models predicted positive vegetation growth that outpaced mortality, leading to continual increases in present-day biomass accumulation. Notably, the two vegetation demographic models (VDMs) (ED2 and ELM-FATES) always predicted positive stem diameter growth in all size classes. The field data, however, indicated that a quarter of canopy trees didn't grow over the 15-year period, and while high interannual variation existed, biomass change was near neutral. With a doubling of CO2, three of the four models predicted an appreciable biomass sink (0.77 to 1.24 Mg ha−1 year−1). ELMv1-ECA, the only model used here that includes phosphorus constraints, predicted the lowest biomass sink relative to initial biomass stocks (+21%), lower than the other BGC model, CLM5 (+48%). Models projections differed primarily through variations in nutrient constraints, then carbon allocation, initial biomass, and density-dependent mortality. The VDM's performance was similar or better than the BGC models run in carbon-only mode, suggesting that nutrient competition in VDMs will improve predictions. We demonstrate that VDMs are comparable to nondemographic (i.e., “big-leaf”) models but also include finer scale demography and competition that can be evaluated against field observations.

Soil moisture plays a key role in hydrological, biogeochemical, and energy budgets of terrestrial ecosystems. Accurate soil moisture measurements in remote ecosystems such as the Amazon are difficult and limited because of logistical constraints. Time domain reflectometry (TDR) sensors are widely used to monitor soil moisture and require calibration to convert the TDR's dielectric permittivity measurement (Ka) to volumetric water content (θv). In this study, our objectives were to develop a field-based calibration of TDR sensors in an old-growth upland forest in the central Amazon, to evaluate the performance of the calibration, and then to apply the calibration to determine the dynamics of soil moisture content within a 14.2-m-deep vertical soil profile. Depth-specific TDR calibration using local soils in a controlled laboratory setting yielded a novel Ka–θv third-degree polynomial calibration. The sensors were later installed to their specific calibration depth in a 14.2-m pit. The widely used Ka–θv relationship (Topp model) underestimated the site-specific θv by 22–42%, indicating significant error in the model when applied to these well-structured, clay-rich tropical forest soils. The calibrated wet- and dry-season θv data showed a variety of depth and temporal variations highlighting the importance of soil textural differentiation, root uptake depths, as well as event to seasonal precipitation effects. Data such as these are greatly needed for improving our understanding of ecohydrological processes within tropical forests and for improving models of these systems in the face of changing environmental conditions.

Aim: We examined the effects of space, climate, phylogeny and species traits on module composition in a cross-biomes plant–hummingbird network. Location: Brazil, except Amazonian region. Methods: We compiled 31 local binary plant–hummingbird networks, combining them into one cross-biomes metanetwork. We conducted a modularity analysis and tested the relationship between species’ module membership with traits, geographical location, climatic conditions and range sizes, employing random forest models. We fitted reduced models containing groups of related variables (climatic, spatial, phylogenetic, traits) and combinations of groups to partition the variance explained by these sets into unique and shared components. Results: The Brazilian cross-biomes network was composed of 479 plant and 42 hummingbird species, and showed significant modularity. The resulting six modules conformed well to vegetation domains. Only plant traits, not hummingbird traits, differed between modules, notably plants’ growth form, corolla length, flower shape and colour. Some modules included plant species with very restricted distributions, whereas others encompassed more widespread ones. Widespread hummingbirds were the most connected, both within and between modules, whereas widespread plants were the most connected between modules. Among traits, only nectar concentration had a weak effect on among-module connectivity. Main conclusions: Climate and spatial filters were the main determinants of module composition for hummingbirds and plants, potentially related to resource seasonality, especially for hummingbirds. Historical dispersal-linked contingency, or environmental variations not accounted for by the explanatory factors here evaluated, could also contribute to the spatial component. Phylogeny and morphological traits had no unique effects on the assignment of species to modules. Widespread species showed higher within- and/or among-module connectivity, indicating their key role connecting biomes, and, in the case of hummingbirds, communities within biomes. Our results indicate that biogeography and climate not only determine the variation of modularity in local plant–animal networks, as previously shown, but also affect the cross-biomes network structure.

Biochemical and anthropometric parameters were evaluated to identify the presence of HF and MS. The presence of MS was evaluated according to NCEP ATP III. Biochemical parameters (glycemia, triglycerides, HDL-c) were assessed according to the manufacturer’s protocols. Anthropometric measurements and blood pressure measurements were made by a trained professional. The chi-square (X2) test, odds ratio, normality distribution (verified by the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test), and Levene’s test were used to analyze the variables. To evaluate the effect of MS, HF, and the interaction between MS and HF, two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed based on the homogeneity of the variances, followed by Bonferroni’s post hoc comparisons. Spearman correlation analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between quantitative variables. A multiple linear regression model was used to analyze the effect of covariables. A logistic regression model was built to analyze the variables that contribute significantly to predict the outcome (HF) using the backward method.Results: Our results showed that 57% of men and 49.5% of women presented with MS; 44% of men and 11% of women presented with HF. The presence of MS and hypertriglyceridemia increase the probability of having HF by up to 2.1 and 1.88 times, respectively, while for male sex it is increased by 6.2 times. Patients with HF have higher values of C-reactive protein, ferritin, and transferrin saturation, regardless of the presence of MS. The linear regression analysis model indicated that the variables considered in this study explain less than 30% of the variation in ferritin and that the presence of MS in men is responsible for 22% of the variation in the probability of the occurrence of HF.Conclusion: Our results show that hyperferritinemia is closely associated with the components of MS (positive correlation with glycemia, triglycerides levels, blood pressure, and waist circumference, and negative correlation with HDL-c values) in the studied population.Keywords: cardiovascular disease, hyperferritinemia, iron overload syndrome, metabolic syndrome

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of liposome-encapsulated eugenol-based thiazolic derivatives against efflux pump-carrying bacteria. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was determined to evaluate the antibacterial activity and antibiotic potentiation against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, as well as to analyze the inhibition of efflux pumps in S. aureus strains 1199B and K2068 in the ethidium bromide assay. The direct antibacterial activity analysis showed no clinically relevant results since the compounds presented MICs ≥1024 µg/mL. Regarding the analysis of antibiotic potentiation against multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains of S. aureus, compound LF16 reduced norfloxacin MIC from 128 µg/mL to 64 µg/mL. All associated with gentamicin caused a significant antibiotic MIC reduction. None of the compounds could potentate the activity of norfloxacin against P. aeruginosa. However, all of them potentiated the activity of gentamicin against the same strain. Only the LF 26 caused a significant MIC reduction in the ethidium bromide assay, suggesting efflux inhibition in the S. aureus 1199B strain. Similar results were observed with the K2068 strain. Observing antibiotic MIC reduction S. aureus strains carrying the NorA and MepA proteins brought additional evidence of efflux pump inhibition. Our results indicate that while eugenol-based thiazoles didn't exhibit direct activity, they can potentiate the antibiotics activity against MDR strains of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus. Wild felids are vital to maintaining the ecological balance in natural environments as they regulate prey populations at different levels of the food chain. Changes in the dynamics of predator populations can impact the entire biodiversity of an ecosystem. There are few reports of Adenovirus infections in these animals, and little is known about their epidemiology. Therefore, a deeper understanding of these viruses within a One Health framework is essential, given their importance to animal, human, and environmental health. This study aimed to detect Adenovirus DNA in fecal samples of wild felids from a remnant of the Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil, renowned for its high biodiversity. A total of 43 fecal samples, 11 from jaguar ( Panthera onca ) and 32 from ocelot ( Leopardus pardalis ), were collected. The samples were subjected to viral nucleic acid extraction and genetic material amplification through PCR, followed by nucleotide sequencing. All phylogenetic analyses were based on the amino acid sequences of the DNA polymerase and IV2a genes. Adenovirus DNA was detected in the feces of both species, with two samples of each feline testing positive. This study reports, for the first time, the occurrence of Adenovirus associated with feces of Panthera onca and Leopardus pardalis . All detected sequences were grouped within the Mastadenovirus genus. Based solely on phylogenetic distance criteria, the identified sequences could be classified as Mastadenovirus bosprimum and Mastadenovirus from the vampire bat Desmodus rotundus . We hypothesize that Adenoviruses were associated with the prey consumed, which may allow the felines to act as eventual viral dispersing agents in the environment, in addition to the risk of being infected. This study provides new information on the association of Adenoviruses with wild felids and their prey, and offers important insights into the ecological dynamics of these viruses in natural environments. It suggests that wild felines may play a crucial role in viral surveillance programs.

Purpose: The aim of the investigation was to determine the rate of prophylactic antibiotic use in hand surgeries and the factors related to their use in a group of Colombian patients., Methods: This was a descriptive study of patients undergoing hand surgery between January 2021 and December 2022. Sociodemographic, clinical, and pharmacological variables were analyzed. The use of prophylactic antibiotics in clean wounds was considered inappropriate except in those who needed placement of an internal fixation implant. Variables related to inappropriate use of prophylactic antibiotics were analyzed., Results: A total of 523 patients were reviewed, with an average age of 44.3 years; 51.2% were men. Most of the patients had a diagnosis of hand fracture (28.7%), trigger finger (24.5%), or ganglion (18.5%). The surgical wound was considered clean in 79.0% of cases. A total of 91.0% received prophylactic antibiotics, mostly cefazolin (63.3%). Some 55.7% were considered inappropriate by our criteria. Women (odds ratio [OR], 3.19; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.85-5.47), middle-low to high socioeconomic status (OR, 1.88; 95% CI, 1.05-3.38), treatment in clinic #1 (OR, 9.67; 95% CI, 4.81-19.43), history of diabetes mellitus (OR, 2.90; 95% CI, 1.07-7.86), and diagnosis of trigger finger (OR, 19.92; 95% CI, 9.95-39.88), ganglion (OR, 24.53; 95% CI, 11.72-51.34), or tenosynovitis (OR, 19.61; 95% CI, 6.78-56.73) were associated with receiving inappropriate prophylactic antibiotics. At hospital discharge, 60.6% received prophylactic antibiotics., Conclusions: In a low-middle income country, the use of inappropriate antibiotics in hand surgical procedures is as common as in higher-income countries. Traits related to calving have a significant impact on animal welfare and farm profitability in dairy production systems. Identifying genomic regions associated with calving traits could contribute to refining dairy cattle breeding programs and management practices in the dairy industry. Therefore, the primary objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters and perform genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and functional enrichment analyses for stillbirth, gestation length, calf size, and calving ease traits in North American Jersey cattle. A total of 40,503 animals with phenotypic records and 5,398 animals genotyped for 45,101 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were included in the analyses. Genetic parameters were estimated based on animal models and Bayesian methods. The effects of SNPs were estimated using the Single-step Genomic Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (ssGBLUP) method. The heritability (standard error) estimates ranged from 0.01 (0.01) for stillbirths (SB) in heifers to 0.11 (0.01) for gestation length (GL) in cows. The genetic correlations ranged from -0.58 (0.11) between calving ease (CE) and SB in heifers to 0.44 (0.14) between calving ease and calf size (CZ) in cows. CE showed the highest genetic correlation between heifers and cows, 0.8 (0.22) respectively. The candidate genes identified, including MTHFR, SERPINA5, IGFBP3, and ZRANB1, are involved in key biological processes and metabolic pathways related to the studied traits. Reducing environmental variation and identifying novel indicators of reproduction traits in the Jersey breed are needed given the low heritability estimates for most traits evaluated in this study. In conclusion, this study provides a characterization of the genetic background of calving-related traits in Jersey cattle. We evaluated antibodies against Leptospira spp. in both free-living and captive Caiman latirostris from Atlantic Forest, and free-living Caiman yacare from Pantanal, Brazil, by using a microscopic agglutination test. Background: Longitudinal records of automatically-recorded vaginal temperature (T V ) could be a key source of data for deriving novel indicators of climatic resilience (CR) for breeding more resilient pigs, especially during lactation when sows are at an increased risk of suffering from heat stress (HS). Therefore, we derived 15 CR indicators based on the variability in T V in lactating sows and estimated their genetic parameters. We also investigated their genetic relationship with sows' key reproductive traits., Results: The heritability estimates of the CR traits ranged from 0.000 ± 0.000 for slope for decreased rate of T V (Slope De ) to 0.291 ± 0.047 for sum of T V values below the HS threshold (HSU B ). Moderate to high genetic correlations (from 0.508 ± 0.056 to 0.998 ± 0.137) and Spearman rank correlations (from 0.431 to 1.000) between genomic estimated breeding values (GEBV) were observed for five CR indicators, i.e. HS duration (HSD), the normalized median multiplied by normalized variance (Nor_medvar), the highest T V value of each measurement day for each individual (Max Tv ), and the sum of the T V values above (HSU A ) and below (HSU B ) the HS threshold. These five CR indicators were lowly to moderately genetically correlated with shoulder skin surface temperature (from 0.139 ± 0.008 to 0.478 ± 0.048) and respiration rate (from 0.079 ± 0.011 to 0.502 ± 0.098). The genetic correlations between these five selected CR indicators and sow reproductive performance traits ranged from - 0.733 to - 0.175 for total number of piglets born alive, from - 0.733 to - 0.175 for total number of piglets born, and from - 0.434 to - 0.169 for number of pigs weaned. The individuals with the highest GEBV (most climate-sensitive) had higher mean skin surface temperature, respiration rate (RR), panting score (PS), and hair density, but had lower mean body condition scores compared to those with the lowest GEBV (most climate-resilient)., Conclusions: Most of the CR indicators evaluated are heritable with substantial additive genetic variance. Five of them, i.e. HSD, Max Tv , HSU A , HSU B , and Nor_medvar share similar underlying genetic mechanisms. In addition, individuals with higher CR indicators are more likely to exhibit better HS-related physiological responses, higher body condition scores, and improved reproductive performance under hot conditions. Background: Heat stress (HS) poses significant threats to the sustainability of livestock production. Genetically improving heat tolerance could enhance animal welfare and minimize production losses during HS events. Measuring phenotypic indicators of HS response and understanding their genetic background are crucial steps to optimize breeding schemes for improved climatic resilience. The identification of genomic regions and candidate genes influencing the traits of interest, including variants with pleiotropic effects, enables the refinement of genotyping panels used to perform genomic prediction of breeding values and contributes to unraveling the biological mechanisms influencing heat stress response. Therefore, the main objectives of this study were to identify genomic regions, candidate genes, and potential pleiotropic variants significantly associated with indicators of HS response in lactating sows using imputed whole-genome sequence (WGS) data. Phenotypic records for 18 traits and genomic information from 1,645 lactating sows were available for the study. The genotypes from the PorcineSNP50K panel containing 50,703 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were imputed to WGS and after quality control, 1,622 animals and 7,065,922 SNPs were included in the analyses., Results: A total of 1,388 unique SNPs located on sixteen chromosomes were found to be associated with 11 traits. Twenty gene ontology terms and 11 biological pathways were shown to be associated with variability in ear skin temperature, shoulder skin temperature, rump skin temperature, tail skin temperature, respiration rate, panting score, vaginal temperature automatically measured every 10 min, vaginal temperature measured at 0800 h, hair density score, body condition score, and ear area. Seven, five, six, two, seven, 15, and 14 genes with potential pleiotropic effects were identified for indicators of skin temperature, vaginal temperature, animal temperature, respiration rate, thermoregulatory traits, anatomical traits, and all traits, respectively., Conclusions: Physiological and anatomical indicators of HS response in lactating sows are heritable but highly polygenic. The candidate genes found are associated with important gene ontology terms and biological pathways related to heat shock protein activities, immune response, and cellular oxidative stress. Many of the candidate genes with pleiotropic effects are involved in catalytic activities to reduce cell damage from oxidative stress and cellular mechanisms related to immune response., (© 2024. Precision livestock farming technologies, such as automatic milk feeding machines, have increased the availability of on-farm data collected from dairy operations. We analyzed feeding records from automatic milk feeding machines to evaluate the genetic background of milk feeding traits and bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in North American Holstein calves. Data from 10,076 preweaning female Holstein calves were collected daily over a period of 6 yr (3 yr included per-visit data), and daily milk consumption (DMC), per-visit milk consumption (PVMC), daily sum of drinking duration (DSDD), drinking duration per-visit, daily number of rewarded visits (DNRV), and total number of visits per day were recorded over a 60-d preweaning period. Additional traits were derived from these variables, including total consumption and duration variance (TCV and TDV), feeding interval, drinking speed (DS), and preweaning stayability. A single BRD-related trait was evaluated, which was the number of times a calf was treated for BRD (NTT). The NTT was determined by counting the number of BRD incidences before 60 d of age. All traits were analyzed using single-step genomic BLUP mixed-model equations and fitting either repeatability or random regression models in the BLUPF90+ suite of programs. A total of 10,076 calves with phenotypic records and genotypic information for 57,019 SNP after the quality control were included in the analyses. Feeding traits had low heritability estimates based on repeatability models (0.006 ± 0.0009 to 0.08 ± 0.004). However, total variance traits using an animal model had greater heritabilities of 0.21 ± 0.023 and 0.23 ± 0.024, for TCV and TDV, respectively. The heritability estimates increased with the repeatability model when using only the first 32 d preweaning (e.g., PVMC = 0.040 ± 0.003, DMC = 0.090 ± 0.009, DSDD = 0.100 ± 0.005, DS = 0.150 ± 0.007, DNRV = 0.020 ± 0.002). When fitting random regression models (RRM) using the full dataset (60-d period), greater heritability estimates were obtained (e.g., PVMC = 0.070 [range: 0.020, 0.110], DMC = 0.460 [range: 0.050, 0.680], DSDD = 0.180 [range: 0.010, 0.340], DS = 0.19 [range: 0.070, 0.430], DNRV = 0.120 [range: 0.030, 0.450]) for the majority of the traits, suggesting that RRM capture more genetic variability than the repeatability model with better fit being found for RRM. Moderate negative genetic correlations of -0.59 between DMC and NTT were observed, suggesting that automatic milk feeding machines records have the potential to be used for genetically improving disease resilience in Holstein calves. The reintroduction of captive animals to the wild helps restore endangered species, but it risks pathogen transmission, harming wild populations. Such transmission can impact the genetic diversity and long-term viability of these populations. This study assessed parasite diversity and load in captive Pecari tajacu , a species native to the Americas and culturally significant to Brazilian indigenous culture, prior to reintroduction. Samples from 24 peccaries were analyzed for ectoparasites, hemopathogens, and stool parasites with direct and molecular analysis. Findings showed that various parasites were present. Two peccaries (8.3%) were infested by the adult tick Amblyomma sculptum . Six (25.0%) tested positive for Trypanosoma evansi , four (16.7%) for hemobacteria of the family Anaplasmataceae, twelve (50.0%) for hemotropic Mycoplasma , and seven (29.2%) for Leishmania braziliensis . Stool samples indicated multiple parasites, with sixteen (66.7%) peccaries infected by Strongylida order parasites, Spiruridae in three (12.5%), and Ascaris suum in one (4.2%) animal. Cysts of Balantidium sp. were found in twenty (83.3%), Entamoeba polecki in five (20.8%), and Iodamoeba bütschlii in two (8.3%) peccaries. To our current knowledge, this is the first global report of Leishmania braziliensis , Iodamoeba bütschlii , and Entamoeba polecki in P. tajacu , irrespective of the environment, including both captivity and wild conditions. Some of these parasites are common in domestic animals, and others are zoonotic, indicating potential interspecies pathogen transmission.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a commonly used thermoplastic in industry due to its excellent malleability and thermal stability, making it extensively employed in packaging manufacturing. Inadequate disposal of PET packaging in the environment and natural physical-chemical processes leads to the formation of smaller particles known as PET micro and nanoplastics (MNPs). The reduced dimensions enhance particle bioavailability and, subsequently, their reactivity. This study involved chemical degradation of PET using trifluoroacetic acid to assess the impact of exposure to varying concentrations of PET MNPs (0.5, 1, 5, 10, and 20 mg/L) on morphological, functional, behavioral, and biochemical parameters during the early developmental stages of zebrafish (Danio rerio). Characterization of the degraded PET revealed the generated microplastics (MPs) ranged in size from 1305 to 2032 μm, and that the generated nanoplastics (NPs) ranged from 68.06 to 955 nm. These particles were then used for animal exposure. After a six-day exposure period, our findings indicate that PET MNPs can diminish spontaneous tail coiling (STC), elevate the heart rate, accumulate on the chorion surface, and reduce interocular distance. Background: Automatic and continuous recording of vaginal temperature (T V ) using wearable sensors causes minimal disruptions to animal behavior and can generate data that enable the evaluation of temporal body temperature variation under heat stress (HS) conditions. However, the genetic basis of T V in lactating sows from a longitudinal perspective is still unknown. The objectives of this study were to define statistical models and estimate genetic parameters for T V in lactating sows using random regression models, and identify genomic regions and candidate genes associated with HS indicators derived from automatically-recorded T V ., Results: Heritability estimates for T V ranged from 0.14 to 0.20 over time (throughout the day and measurement period) and from 0.09 to 0.18 along environmental gradients (EG, - 3.5 to 2.2, which correspond to dew point values from 14.87 to 28.19 ˚C). Repeatability estimates of T V over time and along EG ranged from 0.57 to 0.66 and from 0.54 to 0.77, respectively. T V measured from 12h00 to 16h00 had moderately high estimates of heritability (0.20) and repeatability (0.64), indicating that this period might be the most suitable for recording T V for genetic selection purposes. Significant genotype-by-environment interactions (GxE) were observed and the moderately high estimates of genetic correlations between pairs of extreme EG indicate potential re-ranking of selection candidates across EG. Two important genomic regions on chromosomes 10 (59.370-59.998 Mb) and16 (21.548-21.966 Mb) were identified. These regions harbor the genes CDC123, CAMK1d, SEC61A2, and NUDT5 that are associated with immunity, protein transport, and energy metabolism. Across the four time-periods, respectively 12, 13, 16, and 10 associated genomic regions across 14 chromosomes were identified for T V . For the three EG classes, respectively 18, 15, and 14 associated genomic windows were identified for T V , respectively. Each time-period and EG class had uniquely enriched genes with identified specific biological functions, including regulation of the nervous system, metabolism and hormone production., Conclusions: T V is a heritable trait with substantial additive genetic variation and represents a promising indicator trait to select pigs for improved heat tolerance. Mango and its by-products have traditional medicinal uses. They contain diverse bioactive compounds offering numerous health benefits, including cardioprotective and metabolic properties. This study aimed to explore the impact of mango fruit and its by-products on human health, emphasizing its metabolic syndrome components. PUBMED, EMBASE, COCHRANE, and GOOGLE SCHOLAR were searched following PRISMA guidelines, and the COCHRANE handbook was utilized to assess bias risks. In vivo and in vitro studies have shown several benefits of mango and its by-products. For this systematic review, 13 studies met the inclusion criteria. The collective findings indicated that the utilization of mango in various forms-ranging from fresh mango slices and mango puree to mango by-products, mango leaf extract, fruit powder, and mangiferin-yielded many favorable effects. These encompassed enhancements in glycemic control and improvements in plasma lipid profiles. Additionally, mango reduces food intake, elevates mood scores, augments physical performance during exercise, improves endothelial function, and decreases the incidence of respiratory tract infections. Utilizing mango by-products supports the demand for healthier products. This approach also aids in environmental conservation. Furthermore, the development of mango-derived nanomedicines aligns with sustainable goals and offers innovative solutions for healthcare challenges whilst being environmentally conscious.

Understanding the effects of intensification of Amazon basin hydrological cycling-manifest as increasingly frequent floods and droughts-on water and energy cycles of tropical forests is essential to meeting the challenge of predicting ecosystem responses to climate change, including forest "tipping points". Here, we investigated the impacts of hydrological extremes on forest function using 12+ years of observations (between 2001-2020) of water and energy fluxes from eddy covariance, along with associated ecological dynamics from biometry, at the Tapajós National Forest. Measurements encompass the strong 2015-2016 El Niño drought and La Niña 2008-2009 wet events. We found that the forest responded strongly to El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO): Drought reduced water availability for evapotranspiration (ET) leading to large increases in sensible heat fluxes (H). Partitioning ET by an approach that assumes transpiration (T) is proportional to photosynthesis, we found that water stress-induced reductions in canopy conductance (G s ) drove T declines partly compensated by higher evaporation (E). By contrast, the abnormally wet La Niña period gave higher T and lower E, with little change in seasonal ET. Both El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events resulted in changes in forest structure, manifested as lower wet-season leaf area index. However, only during El Niño 2015-2016, we observed a breakdown in the strong meteorological control of transpiration fluxes (via energy availability and atmospheric demand) because of slowing vegetation functions (via shutdown of G s and significant leaf shedding). Drought-reduced T and G s , higher H and E, amplified by feedbacks with higher temperatures and vapor pressure deficits, signaled that forest function had crossed a threshold, from which it recovered slowly, with delay, post-drought. Identifying such tipping point onsets (beyond which future irreversible processes may occur) at local scale is crucial for predicting basin-scale threshold-crossing changes in forest energy and water cycling, leading to slow-down in forest function, potentially resulting in Amazon forests shifting into alternate degraded states., (© 2023 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

This study presents the first successful capture using GPS tagging of a jaguar ( Panthera onca ) using a minimally invasive capture system (MICS). We used snare-foot traps and a MICS during two capture campaigns in a fragment of Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil. The specimen disarmed snares on different occasions, and capture was only possible with the MICS. The captured jaguar, an estimated 16-year-old adult male, was monitored using a GPS Vertex Plus Iridium collar with an optimal performance of 86% in expected locations. The jaguar's home range (659 km 2 by MPC and 174 km 2 by 95%K) was within the observed range for the species and the animal was primarily maintained in protected areas. The habitat types most frequently used were native grassland (27.2% of 4798 fixes), marsh (24.8%), and dense lowland forest (24.7%). The use of a MICS for trapping jaguars is a promising technique that shows advantages in terms of efficiency, selectivity, portability, reduced potential risk of injury to animals or trappers, and animal stress compared to other capture methods used for the species.

The objective of this was to evaluate the ability of bioflocs to assimilate and transfer antioxidant compounds present in açaí Euterpe oleracea to juvenile Penaeus vannamei shrimp grown in a biofloc system. Juvenile shrimp were distributed into four treatment groups (control, 5, 20, and 80 mg açaí L -1 ), containing 31 shrimps/tank (90 L), and cultivated for 30 days. Every 24 h throughout the experimental period, the respective açaí concentrations were added directly to the cultivation water. The bioflocs and hepatopancreas lost their antioxidant capacity with increasing concentrations of açaí; however, lipid damage was mitigated after treatment with 20 mg of açaí L -1 ( p < 0.05). The application of 20 mg açaí L -1 increased the mean height and area of the middle intestinal microvilli ( p < 0.05). Mortality and protein and lipid damage in shrimp muscle increased with daily administration of 80 mg açaí L -1 ( p < 0.05). It is concluded that the bioflocs were able to assimilate the antioxidants present in açaí and transfer them to the shrimp, and the administration of 20 mg açaí L -1 presented the best performance, demonstrating the possibility of its application in the cultivation of P. vannamei in a biofloc system.

The use of mixed nonlinear models reduces the residual variance by including random effects, thereby improving the estimates in growth curves. Therefore, we tested distinct mixed nonlinear models (Richards, Brody, Gompertz, Logistic, and Von Bertalanffy) to model the growth curves of Zebu cattle herds raised on pasture in Brazil. In addition, we evaluated the diversity among breeds using hierarchical cluster multivariate analysis (full linkage) based on asymptotic weight (A), maturity rate (K), absolute growth rate (AGR), and absolute maturity rate (AMR) adjusted to 205, 365, 550, and 730 days of age. Body weight data from 311,834 males and females of Guzerat, Nellore, Tabapuã, and Polled Nellore breeds provided by the Brazilian Association of Zebu Breeders were used. The Brody model considering breed-sex fixed and animal random effects was the most suitable to describe the growth in the four breeds. The Guzerat and Tabapuã males showed increased precocity (higher K values) when compared to polled Nellore and Nellore males, which were characterized by higher A and AMR values. Females were more precocious than males (high K and low A values), particularly within Tabapuã and Guzerat breeds, respectively. Regardless of sex, the highest AGR values were observed from weaning up to 2 years of age in Tabapuã and Guzerat breeds. The cluster analyses revealed two groups: (1) Polled Nellore and Nellore males with high A, AGR&#95;205, AGR&#95;365, AGR&#95;550, and AGR&#95;730 values, represented by large adult animals, and (2) males and females of Guzerat and Tabapuã, characterized as animals of increased precocity. A subgroup encompassing males of Guzerat and Tabapuã was also observed, with intermediate values ​​for all parameters. Leishmaniasis, presenting the highest number of cases worldwide is one of the most serious Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). Clinical manifestations are intrinsically related to the host's immune response making immunomodulatory substances the target of numerous studies on antileishmanial activity. The currently available drugs used for treatment present various problems including high toxicity, low efficacy, and associated drug resistance. The search for therapeutic alternatives is urgent, and in this context, thiophene derivatives appear to be a promising therapeutic alternative (many have shown promising anti-leishmanial activity). The objective of this study was to investigate the antileishmanial activity of the 2-amino-thiophenic derivative SB-200. The thiophenic derivative was effective in inhibiting the growth of Leishmania braziliensis, Leishmania major, and Leishmania infantum promastigotes, obtaining respective IC 50 values of 4.25 μM, 4.65 μM, and 3.96 μM. For L. infantum, it was demonstrated that the antipromastigote effect of SB-200 is associated with cell membrane integrity losses, and with morphological changes observed during scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Cytotoxicity was performed for J774.A1 macrophages and VERO cells, to obtain a CC 50 of 42.52 μM and a SI of 10.74 for macrophages and a CC 50 of 39.2 μM and an SI of 9.89 for VERO cells. The anti-amastigote activity of SB-200 revealed an IC 50 of 2.85 μM and an SI of 14.97 against macrophages and SI of 13.8 for VERO cells. The anti-amastigote activity of SB-200 is associated with in vitro immunomodulation. For acute toxicity, SB-200 against Zophobas morio larvae permitted 100% survival. Diabetes Mellitus is a highly prevalent condition in which Diabetes Mellitus type 2 is the most common. Diabetic Kidney Disease is one of the most relevant complications and affects approximately one-third of patients with Diabetes Mellitus. It is characterized by increased urinary protein excretion and a decrease in glomerular filtration rate, assessed by serum creatinine levels. Recent studies have shown that vitamin D levels are low in these patients. This study aimed to conduct a systematic review of the effects of vitamin D supplementation on proteinuria and creatinine, which are important markers for assessing the severity of kidney disease in patients with Diabetic Kidney Disease. PUBMED, EMBASE, and COCHRANE databases were consulted, Preferred Reporting Items for a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines were followed, and the COCHRANE toll for bias assessment was applied. Six papers were quantitative studies and fulfilled the inclusion criteria for this review. The results showed that vitamin D supplementation of 50,000 I.U./week for 8 weeks effectively reduced proteinuria and creatinine in patients with Diabetic Kidney Disease, particularly in patients with Diabetes Mellitus type 2. Vitamin D supplementation is beneficial for patients with Diabetic Kidney Disease by having essential effects on disease-related inflammatory markers, such as the reduction of proteinuria and creatinine. Delivering electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) during the reconsolidation of traumatic memories may enhance the treatment efficacy in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). To test this, 14 patients with severe and refractory PTSD were randomly allocated to receive ECT sessions either after retrieving the traumatic (n=8) or a neutral (n=6) memory. We found that delivering ECT after retrieving the traumatic memory enhanced the improvement of PTSD symptoms and the reduction of subjective reactivity to the traumatic memory. Pneumonia is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children, with pneumococcus as the main etiologic agent. In Brazil, the 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-10) was introduced into the childhood immunization schedule in 2010. The aim of this study was to assess the impact caused by implementing PCV-10 on the hospitalizations of children with pneumonia, between 2005 and 2015, in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. An ecological time series study and a forecasting analysis were conducted. A comparison was made between the hospitalizations of children aged between seven months and four years due to pneumonia in the Brazilian Unified Health System, in the 5 years before (2005-2009) and after (2011-2015) implementation of PCV-10. Descriptive analysis included absolute and relative values, means and rates of hospitalization. The chi-square test was used to compare the annual incidence of hospitalizations and the t-Student test to compare the five-year mean values. For the temporal modeling of hospitalizations, an autoregressive integrated moving average was used, adjusted with seasonal-SARIMA (Box-Jenkins methodology), with a prediction of the monthly number of hospitalizations for 2011-2015. The predicted and observed values for 2011-2015 were then compared. The number of hospitalizations after implementing PCV-10 was reduced by 24.5 %. The monthly average of hospitalizations dropped from 681 (2005-2009) to 514 (2011-2015). The hospitalization rate dropped from 56.1 per thousand live births in the five-year period prior to PCV-10 to 43.4 in the following five-year period (a 22.7% reduction). Comparing the values predicted by the SARIMA model for a scenario without PCV-10 in the second five-year period, with those reported after implementing PCV-10, the estimated number of prevented hospitalizations was 8,682 in the five years following the introduction of the vaccine. Lipoic acid (LA) is a mitochondrial coenzyme that, depending on the concentration and exposure time, can behave as an antioxidant or pro-oxidant agent and has a proven ability to modulate metabolism by promoting lipid and glucose oxidation for energy production. To assess the effects of LA on energy metabolism and redox balance over time, Artemia sp. nauplii was used as an animal model. The administered concentrations of the antioxidant were 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0, and 10.0 µM. Therefore, possible differences in protein, triglyceride, glucose, and lactate concentrations in the artemia samples and total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN) in the culture water were evaluated. We also measured the effects of LA on in vivo activity of the electron transport system (ETS), antioxidant capacity, and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) at 6, 12, 18, and 24 h post-hatching. There was a decrease in glucose concentration in the LA-treated animals, and a decrease in ammonia production was observed in the 0.5 µM LA treatment. ETS activity was positively regulated by the addition of LA, with the most significant effects at concentrations of 5.0 and 10.0 µM at 12 and 24 h. For ETS activity, treatments with LA presented the highest values at 24 h, a period when ROS production decreased significantly, for the treatment with 10.0 µM. LA showed positive regulation of energy metabolism together with a decrease in ROS and TAN excretion.

Using urban residues to produce organomineral fertilizers (OMF) is an environmentally friendly strategy that can enhance soil fertility by adding organic matter and mineral nutrients. Herein we investigated the availability of N, P, and K, under organomineral fertilization in sandy soils. An incubation study was conducted using OMF formulated with biosolids as organic matrix and N source, rock phosphate, and potassium sulfate as P and K sources, respectively. Two forms of isolated N, P, and K sources (granulated and non-granulated), five N:P:K granulation proportions (1-2-0, 1-4-0, 1-0-2, 1-2-2, 1-2-4), and a control (unfertilized) were mixed with soil and assessed over a 112 days incubation period. Soil samples were collected at 0, 7, 14, 28, 56, and 112 days to quantify available soil concentrations of ammonium (N-NH 4 + ), nitrate + nitrite (N-NO 2 -  + N-NO 3 - ), P, and K. The results showed that OMF formulated with NPK had better nitrogen efficiency indexes (NEI) than other formulations and did not induce N immobilization throughout the experiment. Regarding P and K efficiency, OMFs containing phosphorus and potassium increased the indexes compared to the single fertilizer sources. When comparing non-granulated potassium sulfate with granulated, the latter showed a steadier release due to the granulation process. In comparison with rock phosphate at the end of the experiment, the OMFs 1-2-0 and 1-4-2 had higher P available by 116 and 41%, respectively. Background: Different drugs have been approved to reduce the intraocular pressure. However, most of them contain preservatives to maintain sterility and these can be toxic to the ocular surface. The aim was to determine the patterns of use of antiglaucoma agents and ophthalmic preservatives in a group of patients from Colombia., Methods: A cross-sectional study that identified ophthalmic antiglaucoma agents from a population database of 9.2 million. Sociodemographic and pharmacological variables were considered. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were performed., Results: A total of 38,262 patients were identified, with a mean age of 69.2 ± 13.3 years, and 58.6% were women. A total of 98.8% were prescribed antiglaucoma drugs in multidose containers. The most widely used were prostaglandin analogs (59.9%), especially latanoprost (51.6%) and β-blockers (59.2%). A total of 54.7% of patients received combined management, especially with fixed-dose combination (FDC) drugs (41.3%). A total of 94.1% used antiglaucoma drugs with preservatives (benzalkonium chloride, 68.4%)., Conclusions: The pharmacological treatment of glaucoma was very heterogeneous, but the most commonly used therapeutic groups were in accordance with the recommendations of clinical practice guidelines but with differences by sex and age. Most of the patients were exposed to preservatives, especially benzalkonium chloride, but the wide use of FDC drugs can minimize toxicity on the ocular surface.

Rambouillet sheep are commonly raised in extensive grazing systems in the US, mainly for wool and meat production. Genomic evaluations in US sheep breeds, including Rambouillet, are still incipient. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the feasibility of performing genomic prediction of breeding values for various traits in Rambouillet sheep based on single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) or haplotypes (fitted as pseudo-SNP) under a single-step GBLUP approach. A total of 28,834 records for birth weight (BWT), 23,306 for postweaning weight (PWT), 5,832 for yearling weight (YWT), 9,880 for yearling fibre diameter (YFD), 11,872 for yearling greasy fleece weight (YGFW), and 15,984 for number of lambs born (NLB) were used in this study. Seven hundred forty-one individuals were genotyped using a moderate (50 K; n = 677) or high (600 K; n = 64) density SNP panel, in which 32 K SNP in common between the two SNP panels (after genotypic quality control) were used for further analyses. Single-step genomic predictions using SNP (H-BLUP) or haplotypes (HAP-BLUP) from blocks with different linkage disequilibrium (LD) thresholds (0.15, 0.35, 0.50, 0.65, and 0.80) were evaluated. We also considered different blending parameters when constructing the genomic relationship matrix used to predict the genomic-enhanced estimated breeding values (GEBV), with alpha equal to 0.95 or 0.50. The GEBV were compared to the estimated breeding values (EBV) obtained from traditional pedigree-based evaluations (A-BLUP). The mean theoretical accuracy ranged from 0.499 (A-BLUP for PWT) to 0.795 (HAP-BLUP using haplotypes from blocks with LD threshold of 0.35 and alpha equal to 0.95 for YFD). The prediction accuracies ranged from 0.143 (A-BLUP for PWT) to 0.330 (A-BLUP for YGFW) while the prediction bias ranged from -0.104 (H-BLUP for PWT) to 0.087 (HAP-BLUP using haplotypes from blocks with LD threshold of 0.15 and alpha equal to 0.95 for YGFW). The GEBV dispersion ranged from 0.428 (A-BLUP for PWT) to 1.035 (A-BLUP for YGFW). Similar results were observed for H-BLUP or HAP-BLUP, independently of the LD threshold to create the haplotypes, alpha value, or trait analysed. Using genomic information (fitting individual SNP or haplotypes) provided similar or higher prediction and theoretical accuracies and reduced the dispersion of the GEBV for body weight, wool, and reproductive traits in Rambouillet sheep. However, there were no clear improvements in the prediction bias when compared to pedigree-based predictions. Antibiotics are frequently prescribed to patients with COVID-19. The aim was to determine the pattern of use of systemic antibiotics in a group of patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in Colombia between 2020-2022. This was a descriptive cross-sectional study designed to identify antibiotics prescription patterns for patients diagnosed with COVID-19 treated in eight clinics in Colombia. The AWaRe tool of the World Health Organization (WHO) was used to classify the antibiotics. A total of 10,916 patients were included. The median age was 57 years, and 56.4% were male. A total of 57.5% received antibiotics, especially ampicillin/sulbactam (58.8%) and clarithromycin (47.9%). Most of the antibiotics were classified as Watch (65.1%), followed by Access (32.6%) and Reserve (2.4%). Men (OR: 1.29; 95%CI: 1.17-1.43), older adults (OR: 1.67; 95%CI: 1.48-1.88), patients with dyspnea (OR: 1.26; 95%CI: 1.13-1.41), rheumatoid arthritis (OR: 1.94; 95%CI: 1.17-3.20), and high blood pressure at admission (OR: 1.45; 95%CI: 1.29-1.63), patients treated in-hospital (OR: 5.15; 95%CI: 4.59-5.77), patients admitted to the ICU (OR: 10.48; 95%CI: 8.82-12.45), patients treated with systemic glucocorticoids (OR: 3.60; 95%CI: 3.21-4.03) and vasopressors (OR: 2.10; 95%CI: 1.60-2.75), and patients who received invasive mechanical ventilation (OR: 2.37; 95%CI: 1.82-3.09) were more likely to receive a systemic antibiotic. Most of the patients diagnosed with COVID-19 received antibiotics, despite evidence showing that bacterial coinfection is rare. Antibiotics from the Watch group predominated, a practice that goes against WHO recommendations.

Allium sativum (garlic) certainly is one of the oldest horticultural crops in the world and presents bioactive compounds that are related to the garlic's effects on human health. Several authors have shown beneficial effects on diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), which are among the most relevant causes of mortality in the world. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effects of garlic in the risk factors of CVD and evaluate its economic importance. MEDLINE-PubMed, COCHRANE, EMBASE, and Google Scholar databases were searched. The included studies showed that the use of garlic can reduce blood pressure, waist circumference, body mass index, LDL-c, non-HDL-c, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and inflammatory markers. It also can increase the levels of HDL-c and can improve cardiovascular parameters such as coronary artery calcium, microcirculation, epicardial and periaortic adipose tissue, post occlusive reactive hyperemia, low attenuation plaque, carotid intima-media thickness; and carotid intima-media thickness. Due to these reasons, garlic can be considered in the prevention and treatment of CVD risk factors.

Here we provide the 'Global Spectrum of Plant Form and Function Dataset', containing species mean values for six vascular plant traits. Together, these traits -plant height, stem specific density, leaf area, leaf mass per area, leaf nitrogen content per dry mass, and diaspore (seed or spore) mass - define the primary axes of variation in plant form and function. The dataset is based on ca. 1 million trait records received via the TRY database (representing ca. 2,500 original publications) and additional unpublished data. It provides 92,159 species mean values for the six traits, covering 46,047 species. The data are complemented by higher-level taxonomic classification and six categorical traits (woodiness, growth form, succulence, adaptation to terrestrial or aquatic habitats, nutrition type and leaf type). Data quality management is based on a probabilistic approach combined with comprehensive validation against expert knowledge and external information. Space and time promote variation in network structure by affecting the likelihood of potential interactions. However, little is known about the relative roles of ecological and biogeographical processes in determining how species interactions vary across space and time. Here we study the spatiotemporal variation in predator-prey interaction networks formed by anurans and arthropods and test for the effects of prey availability in determining interaction patterns, information that is often absent and limits the understanding of the determinants of network structure. We found that network dissimilarity between ecoregions and seasons was high and primarily driven by interaction rewiring.We also found that species turnover was positively related to geographical distance. Using a null model approach to disentangle the effect of prey availability on the spatial and temporal variation, we show that differences in prey availability were important in determining the variation in network structure between seasons and among areas. Our study reveals that fluctuations in prey abundance, alongside the limited dispersal abilities of anurans and their prey, may be responsible for the spatial patterns that emerged in our predator-prey metaweb. These findings contribute to our understanding of the assembly rules that maintain biotic processes in metacommunities and highlight the importance of prey availability to the structure of these systems., (© 2022 The Ecological Society of America.)

Objective: Autoimmune idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) are a group of pathologies that are generally characterized by muscle weakness. Their treatment involves glucocorticoids and immunosuppressants. The aim was to identify differences and similarities in the pharmacological management of a group of patients with autoimmune IIMs according to the type of disease, sex, age group, and city of residence in Colombia from 2020 to 2021., Methods: This cross-sectional study identified medication prescription patterns for outpatient use in patients with autoimmune IIMs between 2020 and 2021 based on a population database of 8.5 million Colombians affiliated with the Colombian health system. Sociodemographic and pharmacological variables were considered., Results: A total of 671 patients with autoimmune IIMs were identified, with a median age of 57 years, and 70.9% were women. Overlap myositis was the most frequent disease (31.4%). A total of 91.5% of the patients received pharmacological treatment, mainly systemic glucocorticoids (78.5%), conventional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) (74.1%), immunosuppressants (9.1%), and biological DMARDs (3.7%). Pharmacological management predominated among patients with overlap myositis, those who lived in cities, and those affiliated with the contributory regime of the Colombian health system. Conventional DMARDs were prescribed mainly to women and to those older than 65 years., Conclusions: Patients with autoimmune IIMs are not treated homogeneously.
