Abstract

This paper presents a scientometric analysis of research output of biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology from the Gujarat University, Ahmedabad. The research article was published during 1980-2018. However, the data was collected and indexed in Scopus were considered for the analysis included a total of 400 publications. Various scientometric indicators have been calculated to acquire an appropriate perception of the growth and current status of research output of Gujarat University, Ahmedabad. The paper also analysed the publication trend of Gujarat University. The other aspects that were identified in the paper were the most prolific authors, collaborative authorship patterns and trends, most preferred publications, etc.

12. Design, fabrication and performance evaluation of a simple mango harvester

Abstract

Harvesting is one of the most important agricultural and horticultural operations. In Bangladesh, mango harvesting is done traditionally by shaking, plucking with bamboo, picking by hand, by climbing on the tree and from the ground using bamboo stick. The traditional manual harvesting is very labor intensive and thus expensive. There are some risk factors such as the mango could be physically damaged when fall to the ground, sometimes it may fall on the people under the tree and cause accidents. Sometimes people fall from the tree on the ground and cause accidents and even die. This work concerns the development a simple manually operated mango harvester. Two different prototypes of the harvester was designed and manufactured. One is telescopic using different diameter stainless steel pipe and another fixed height using aluminum pipe. The harvester consists of cutting tool, spring, clutch wire, clutch, wheel, pipe and collecting net. The main mechanism used in this concept was simple braking mechanism for cutting operation by using share force of cutting part. The capacity of first prototype (telescopic) and second prototype (second height) was 37.77 kg hr-1 and 40.95 kg hr-1 respectively. The percentage of damaged mango was lower than the manual method. The machine fabrication cost is affordable to the farmers and the harvesting cost of first prototype (telescopic) and second prototype (second height) was same US$ 0.01 kg-1. The simple mango harvester would be an easy solution for mango harvesting.

16. Performance of sustainable green concrete incorporated with fly ash, rice husk ash, and stone dust

Abstract

The performance of a sustainable green concrete with fly ash (FA), rice husk ash (RHA), and stone dust (SD) as a partial replacement of cement and sand was experimentally explored. FA and RHA have a high silica content, are highly pozzolanic in nature and have a high surface area without any treatment. These by-products show filler effects, which enhance concrete’s density. Results showed that the FA and RHA materials have good hydration behaviour and effectively develop strength at an early age of concrete. SD acts as a stress transferring medium within concrete, thereby allowing the concrete to be stronger in compression, and bending. Consequently, water absorption capacity of the sustainable concrete was lower than that of the ordinary one. However, a little reduction in strength was observed after the replacement of the binder and aggregate using the FA, RHA and SD, but the reduction was insignificant. The reinforced structure with sustainable concrete containing the FA, RHA, and SD generally fails in concrete crushing tests initiated by flexural cracking followed by shear cracks. The sustainable concrete could be categorized as a perfect material with no significant conciliation in strength properties and can be applied to design under-reinforced elements for a low-to-moderate service load.
