Understanding the emotional profile of students during their training, as well as associated psychosocial factors such as optimism versus pessimism and self-esteem, is critical to improving student performance, especially in the post-pandemic period. In this study, 798 university students participated, belonging to the Degrees of Early Childhood and Primary Education, with a mean age of 24.52 years (±5.48). The following instruments were used: Wong Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS-S), Life Orientation Test Revised (LOT-R) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). The objective was to determine the predictive value of self-esteem on emotional intelligence and optimism vs. pessimism. A positive relationship between several dimensions of the instruments used ( p < 0.01) were found. Moreover, the regression model predicted an association between emotional intelligence (use of emotions), pessimism and self-esteem. The practical consequences suggest the importance of the acquisition of emotional competences by university students is essential to obtain higher performances.

Background: This study compares the effect of foam rolling (FR) vs. manual therapy (MT) on pain, pressure pain threshold (PPT), headache disability (HDI) and impact of headache (HIT-6) in patients with tension-type headache (TTH)., Methods: A total of 38 participants with TTH were randomly assigned to an FR group (FRG, n = 13), an MT group (MTG, n = 13) or a control group (CG, n = 12). FRG received FR treatment; MTG received MT techniques; CG received a placebo treatment. The treatment lasted one month. Outcome measures were assessed at baseline, post-intervention and follow-up., Results: Both FRG and MTG showed significant improvements in all variables after the treatment, but the intervention effect was maintained only for functional disability ( p = 0.002 and p = 0.005, respectively), overall disability ( p = 0.007; p = 0.030) and HIT-6 ( p = 0.002; p = 0.001) at follow-up. After treatment, FRG and MTG presented a significantly higher PPT in right ( p = 0.044; p = 0.009) and left suboccipital ( p = 0.004; p = 0.021). MTG showed a significantly lower HIT-6 than CG ( p = 0.008). No differences between FRG and MTG were found in any variable., Conclusions: Both FR and MT are effective treatments for the improvement of clinical symptoms in TTH. Further studies are needed to confirm our findings in a larger population.

Living organisms are usually exposed to various DNA damaging agents so the mechanisms to detect and repair diverse DNA lesions have developed in all organisms with the result of maintaining genome integrity. Defects in DNA repair machinery contribute to cancer, certain diseases, and aging. Therefore, conserving the genomic sequence in organisms is key for the perpetuation of life. The machinery of DNA damage repair (DDR) in prokaryotes and eukaryotes is similar. Plants also share mechanisms for DNA repair with animals, although they differ in other important details. Plants have, surprisingly, been less investigated than other living organisms in this context, despite the fact that numerous lethal mutations in animals are viable in plants. In this manuscript, a worldwide bibliometric analysis of DDR systems and DDR research in plants was made. A comparison between both subjects was accomplished. The bibliometric analyses prove that the first study about DDR systems in plants (1987) was published thirteen years later than that for other living organisms (1975). Despite the increase in the number of papers about DDR mechanisms in plants in recent decades, nowadays the number of articles published each year about DDR systems in plants only represents 10% of the total number of articles about DDR. The DDR research field was done by 74 countries while the number of countries involved in the DDR & Plant field is 44. This indicates the great influence that DDR research in the plant field currently has, worldwide. As expected, the percentage of studies published about DDR systems in plants has increased in the subject area of agricultural and biological sciences and has diminished in medicine with respect to DDR studies in other living organisms. In short, bibliometric results highlight the current interest in DDR research in plants among DDR studies and can open new perspectives in the research field of DNA damage repair., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest. Studies of pollen wall development produce a great deal of morphological data that supplies useful information regarding taxonomy and systematics. We present the exine development of Euptelea and Pteridophyllum, two taxa whose pollen wall development has never previously been studied using transmission electron microscopy. Both genera are representatives of the two earliest-diverging families of the order Ranunculales and their pollen data are important for the diagnosis of the ancestral pollen features in eudicots. Our observations show these genera are defined by having microechinate microreticulate exine ornamentation, perforate tectum, columellate morphology of the infratectum and the existence of a foot layer and endexine. The presence of lamellations is detected during the early stages of development in the nexine of both genera, especially in the apertures. Euptelea presents remains of the primexine layer during the whole maturation process, a very thin foot layer, and a laminate exinous oncus in the apertural region formed by ectexine and endexine elements. Pteridophyllum has a thicker tectum than Euptelea, a continuous foot layer and a thicker endexine. In the apertures, the exinous oncus is formed by islets and granules of endexine, in contrast to the Euptelea apertures. The secretory tapetum produces orbicules in both genera, but they have different morphology and electron-density. Comparisons with pollen data from related orders and families confirm the ancestral states for the pollen of eudicots proposed in previous studies: reticulate and echinate surfaces, columellate infractectum and a thin foot layer relative to the thickness of the ectexine. According to our observations, we propose considering the possibility of a polymorphic state for the aperture number in the ancestor of Ranunculales, and suggest the development of orbicules as the ancestral state in this order.

Fumitories (subfamily Fumarioideae, Papaveraceae) represent, by their wide mainly northern temperate distribution (also present in South Africa) a suitable plant group to use as a model system for studying biogeographical links between floristic regions of the Northern Hemisphere and also the Southern Hemisphere Cape region. However, the phylogeny of the entire Fumarioideae subfamily is not totally known. In this work, we infer a molecular phylogeny of Fumarioideae, which we use to interpret the biogeographical patterns in the subfamily and to establish biogeographical links between floristic regions, such as those suggested by its different inter- and intra-continental disjunctions. The tribe Hypecoeae is the sister group of tribe Fumarieae, this latter holding a basal grade of monotypic or few-species genera with bisymmetric flowers, and a core group, Core Fumarieae, of more specious rich genera with zygomorphic flowers. The biogeographical analysis shows a subfamily that originated in East Asia at the end of the Early Cretaceous. From here, ancestral range expansions followed three different directions, one at the beginning of the Late Cretaceous by the ancestor of tribe Hypecoeae towards central Asia, and two during the Cretaceous-Palaeogene transition towards western North America and Indochina by the ancestor of the tribe Fumarieae. The ancestor of Core Fumarieae expanded its range from East Asia into the Himalayas before to the middle Eocene. The uplifts of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau together with the zonal climate pattern of the Palaeogene are suggested to be responsible both for the accelerated diversification rate resulting in the origin of the basal lineages of Core Fumarieae as well as for the westward migration of the ancestor of Fumarieae s.str. into the Irano-Turanian region. From here, this latter group reached South Africa during late Eocene and Mediterranean basin during Oligocene. There were two colonization waves of the Mediterranean following two different routes: a northern route during the early Oligocene by the subtribe Sarcocapninae, probably facilitated by the land bridge resulting of the Mediterranean microplate accretion; and a southern route into North Africa, through the Gomphotherium land bridge, taken by the subtribe Fumariinae between late Oligocene and middle Miocene., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Inc. Background: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is an alternative therapy for high-risk patients with symptomatic aortic stenosis. TAVI without balloon aortic predilation (BPD) has been found to be as feasible and safe as the standard approach with predilation. The aim of this study was to show the usefulness of transesophageal echocardiographic (TEE) criteria during patient selection for TAVI without BPD and compare the results with those from a control group., Methods: Two hundred forty-nine consecutive patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis underwent echocardiographic evaluation before TAVI. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional TEE imaging was used to evaluate the aortic annulus and root, leaflet mobility and degree of calcification, orifice characteristics, valve area, and aortic regurgitation. After TEE data were reviewed, patients were considered to be favorable candidates, or not, for TAVI without BPD on the basis of specific echocardiographic criteria., Results: The mean age was 82 ± 5 years. Seventy-nine patients underwent TAVI without BPD, and 170 patients underwent TAVI with BPD. The mean aortic valve area was 0.61 ± 0.16 cm(2), and the mean aortic annular diameter was 2.2 ± 0.25 cm. In the group without BPD, Edwards SAPIEN XT valves were implanted in 64.6% (n = 51) and Medtronic CoreValve prostheses in 35.4% (n = 28). In this group, residual paravalvular aortic regurgitation immediately after valve deployment was seen in 53.2% of patients, without differences from those who underwent TAVI with BPD. Permanent pacemaker implantation was less frequent in the group of patients without BPD (6.3% vs 14.1%, P = .030). Procedure-related mortality was significantly lower in patients without BPD (2.5% vs 11.8%, P = .018)., Conclusions: Thorough TEE assessment of aortic valve features permits the selection of patients with ideal conditions for TAVI without BPD, regardless of the type of prosthesis. Using the echocardiographic criteria described here, it is possible to achieve a good rate of procedural success with a low complication rate in patients undergoing TAVI without BPD., (Copyright © 2015 American Society of Echocardiography. Background/objectives: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and is associated with a significantly high risk of stroke and systemic embolism. The aim of our study was to assess the association between left atrium (LA) mechanics measured by 3D wall-motion tracking (3DWMT) technology and the most common thromboembolic risk scores (CHADS2, CHA2DS2-VASc)., Methods: A total of 101 consecutive patients with permanent AF referred were included. Conventional bidimensional (2D) LA parameters, and LA mechanics by means of 3DWMT were studied. Association between LA 2D and 3DWMT parameters and both risk scores was evaluated as well as its correlation with every component of the score individually., Results: Mean age was 78 ± 10 years. Mean CHADS2 was 2.7 ± 1.3 and mean CHA2DS2-VASc was 4.4 ± 1.7. Values of 2D and 3DWTM LA parameters were: 2D area 26.4 ± 9.7 cm(2) , 2D volume index 49.4 ± 10.1 mL/m(2) , 3DWMT left atrial emptying fraction (LAEF) 15.9 ± 8.4%, longitudinal strain 9.1 ± 4.5% and area strain 14.9 ± 8.8%. Linear regression analysis showed statistically significant correlation between LA longitudinal strain and LAEF with CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores. For each 10% variation in longitudinal strain, CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores change in 0.7 and 0.8 points, respectively., Conclusions: Left atrial longitudinal strain and emptying fraction assessed by 3D WMT technology have correlation with both CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores. Each 10% of variation in longitudinal strain represents a 0.7 and 0.8 points change in those risk scores. Objective: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive, fatal disease with average survival of less than 3 years if left untreated. It is most common in patients infected with HIV. Although the pathogenesis in this population is not fully understood, it is thought that HIV infection, through the immune response and release of different inflammatory mediators such as endothelin-1, may contribute directly to endothelial damage. Our objective was to quantify endothelin-1 levels in HIV-infected patients and determine whether or not there is an association between this marker and PAH., Design: A case-control study in patients attending an infectious diseases clinic., Methods: The sample was composed of 79 patients divided into three groups: 23 HIV patients with PAH (HIV+/PAH+), 45 HIV patients without PAH (HIV+/PAH-) and a control group of 11 healthy individuals. The ratio between the HIV+/PAH- and HIV+/PAH+ groups was 2 : 1. Patients were matched by age, sex, risk group and viral load; the control group by age and sex. All patients had blood taken for endothelin-1 plasma quantification., Results: We found lower endothelin-1 levels in the controls than in the HIV+/PAH- group [0.71 pg/ml (interquartile range, IQR 0.54-0.94) vs. 1.13 pg/ml (IQR 0.87-1.38); P = 0.005] and the HIV+/PAH+ cohort [1.16 pg/ml (IQR 0.86-2.37); P = 0.003]. Patients with severe PAH had higher endothelin-1 levels [2.94 pg/ml (IQR 1.81-6.33)] than patients with mild and moderate PAH., Conclusion: Plasma endothelin-1 levels are higher in HIV patients with PAH than in the HIV-noninfected population and levels increase with the severity of the PAH.

Background: Balloon valvuloplasty (BAV) has been considered a mandatory step before TAVI. However, it might be related to cerebrovascular microembolizations, atrioventricular conduction disturbances, and hemodynamic instability. The aim of this study is to describe transesophageal echocardiography characteristics of patients that could benefit from direct transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) of Edwards SAPIEN XT, without previous BAV., Methods and Results: A total of 16 patients with direct implantation of an Edwards SAPIEN XT valve are included. Preprocedural echocardiographic findings were exhaustively analyzed and described. From 32 patients elected for transfemoral TAVI with an Edwards SAPIEN XT, 16 of them (50%) were selected for direct implantation using the Edwards SAPIEN XT valve of size 23 mm (n = 5), 26 mm (n = 8), or 29 mm (n = 3). Patients selection for direct TAVI presented three echocardiographic conditions: central effective orifice, moderate to severe calcification of the aortic valve apparatus preserving leaflets movement, and symmetric distribution of calcium with absent to moderate central aortic regurgitation. Mean age was 81.4 ± 7.4, 75% female, with a mean logistic Euroscore 18.2 ± 11.2. Preprocedural mean valve gradient was 43.6 ± 16.3. Mean effective orifice area was 0.7 ± 0.2. There was no valve embolization and the success rate was 100%. Postdilation was performed in one patient (6.25%). New permanent pacing was needed in two patients (12.5%)., Conclusions: TAVI without previous BAV is feasible and safe. 2D/3D TEE is an essential tool to select the patients that could benefit from this technique., (© 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Background: Three-dimensional (3D) color Doppler transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) enables accurate planimetry of the effective regurgitant orifice (ERO) of a mitral paravalvular leak (PVL). The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of this method to quantify paravalvular regurgitation and to assess percutaneous PVL closure success, compared with 3D planimetry of PVLs without using color-flow images (3D anatomic regurgitant orifice [ARO])., Methods: Forty-six patients (59 mitral PVLs) who underwent 3D TEE to evaluate the indication of PVL closure procedure were retrospectively included. Receiver operating characteristic curves were compared to identify degree III and IV paravalvular regurgitation of 3D color ERO and 3D ARO measures. Forty patients underwent percutaneous PVL closure procedures; analysis was conducted to determine whether the undersizing of the closure devices according to 3D color ERO and 3D ARO measures was associated with PVL closure failure., Results: Three-dimensional ERO measures showed better areas under the curve than 3D ARO measures and correlated better with the degree of paravalvular regurgitation. Three-dimensional color ERO major diameter ≥ 0.65 cm showed a positive predictive value of 87.1% and a negative predictive value of 94% to diagnose degree III and IV paravalvular regurgitation. For the 40 patients who underwent PVL closure procedures, the immediate technical success rate was 76.9%, and 1-year estimated survival was 69.5%. Closure device undersizing according to 3D color ERO length, but not other PVL measurements, was significantly associated with PVL closure failure (P = .007)., Conclusion: Three-dimensional ERO was superior to 3D ARO at identifying the presence of degree III and IV paravalvular regurgitation. The undersizing of closure devices according to 3D color ERO length was associated with failed closure procedures.
