Background and objectives: For centuries, plant seed extracts have been widely used and valued for their benefits. They have been used in food, perfumes, aromatherapy, and traditional medicine. These natural products are renowned for their therapeutic properties and are commonly used in medicinal treatments. Their significant pharmacological profiles provide an excellent hallmark for the prevention or treatment of various diseases. In this study, we comprehensively evaluated the biological and pharmacological properties of nutmeg seeds and explored their efficacy in treating various illnesses. Method: Published articles in databases including Google Scholar, PubMed, Elsevier, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Wiley, were analyzed using keywords related to nutmeg seed. The searched keywords were chemical compounds, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antidiabetic, anticancer properties, and their protective mechanisms in cardiovascular and Alzheimer’s diseases. Results & discussion: Nutmeg seeds have been reported to have potent antimicrobial properties against a wide range of various bacteria and fungi, thus showing potential for combating microbial infections and promoting overall health. Furthermore, nutmeg extract effectively reduces oxidative stress and inflammation by improving the body’s natural antioxidant defense mechanism. Nutmeg affected lipid peroxidation, reduced lipid oxidation, reduced low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and increased phospholipid and cholesterol excretion. In addition, nutmeg extract improves the modulation of cardiac metabolism, accelerates cardiac conductivity and ventricular contractility, and prevents cell apoptosis. This study elucidated the psychotropic, narcotic, antidepressant, and anxiogenic effects of nutmeg seeds and their potential as a pharmaceutical medicine. Notably, despite its sedative and toxic properties, nutmeg ingestion alone did not cause death or life-threatening effects within the dosage range of 20–80 g powder. However, chemical analysis of nutmeg extracts identified over 50 compounds, including flavonoids, alkaloids, and polyphenolic compounds, which exhibit antioxidant properties and can be used as phytomedicines. Moreover, the exceptional pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of nutmeg have been found different for different administration routes, yet, more clinical trials are still needed. Conclusion: Understanding the chemical composition and pharmacological properties of nutmeg holds promise for novel drug discovery and therapeutic advancements. Nutmeg seed offers therapeutic and novel drug prospects that can revolutionize medicine. By delving into their pharmacological properties, we can uncover the vast potential possibilities of this natural wonder.

Abstract Background Urinary leakage after removal of the nephrostomy tube post-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) is a common complication which could be secondary to ureteral stone fragments, blood clots, ureteral edema at the ureteropelvic or ureterovesical junction, or rupture calyx. Unfortunately, it could impact the patient’s hospital stay causing it to be lengthy, delaying time to return to work, and the negative psychological effect. The current study aimed at assessing the role and effectiveness of alpha blockers (tamsulosin) in minimizing the duration of urinary leakage post-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL). Methods In this prospective randomized clinical study, 62 cases of PNL were included. Physical examination, laboratory investigations and radiological work up (KUB and plain computed tomography) were done. Cases were randomized into two equal groups: Group A (31 cases) received tamsulosin perioperatively; Group B (31 cases) did not receive tamsulosin. The two groups were followed postoperatively as regards duration of urinary leakage, urinary catheterization and hospital stay. Results Duration of urinary leakage was statistically significantly shorter in group A (10.61 ± 6.66 h) compared to group B (21.48 ± 12.41 h) (p-value ˂ 0.001). Similarly, duration of hospital stay was shorter in group A (2.52 ± 0.72 days) compared to group B (3.10 ± 0.98) (p-value 0.020). Conclusions In patients undergoing PNL for renal stones and receiving tamsulosin, the duration of urinary leakage, and eventually hospital stay was shorter compared to those not receiving tamsulosin.

Abstract Background Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is highly prevalent in Egypt. It was found to be 7.0% in a study done in 2015. There are some studies on the prevalence of HCV in rheumatoid arthritis, but to our knowledge, no previous study was done to detect it in other rheumatologic diseases. This study aims at detecting the prevalence of subclinical HCV infection in Egyptian patients with different rheumatic diseases. In the current study, eight hundred and three patients with different rheumatic diseases collected from five—geographically different—Egyptian rheumatology departments were studied. Patients with known current or previous HCV infection were excluded from the study. Screening for the positive anti-HCV antibodies was done for all patients. Screening for the presence of HCV ribonucleic acid (RNA) was done in patients with positive serology by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Results In the studied population, 675 (84.1%) patients were women. The mean age [± SD] was 44.2 [± 12.9] years. Hepatitis C antibody positivity was found in 73 (9.1%) of the patients, while 67 (8.3%) were having positive HCV-RNA quantitative PCR tests. The highest prevalence of seropositive HCV was found in drug-induced vasculitis (DIV) and cryo-vasculitis (100%), while in RA, HCV antibodies and PCR were found to be positive in 9.1% and 8.3% of patients, respectively. Conclusions Detection of the presence of HCV infection in 9.1 % of the studied middle-aged Egyptian patients with rheumatologic conditions points to the importance of screening for HCV in such population for early detection and intervention especially for those patients that are planned to start biologic therapy.

Crystal violet (CV) dye, because of its non-biodegradability and harmful effects, poses a significant challenge for wastewater treatment. This study addresses the efficiency of easily accessible coal fly ash (CFA)-based adsorbents such as raw coal fly ash (RCFA) and surface enhanced coal fly ash (SECFA), in removing CV dye from waste effluents. Various analytical techniques such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, zeta sizer and zeta potential were employed for the characterization of the adsorbents and dye-loaded samples. BET revealed that RCFA possesses a surface area of 19.370 m 2 g -1 and SECFA of 27.391 m 2 g -1 , exhibiting pore volumes of 0.1365 cm 3 g -1 and 0.1919 cm 3 g -1 respectively. Zeta-sizer and potential analysis showed the static charges of RCFA as -27.3 mV and SECFA as -28.2 mV, with average particle sizes of 346.6 and 315.3 nm, respectively. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were also employed for adsorption studies. Employing central composite design (CCD) of response surface methodology (RSM), the maximum CV removal was 81.52% for RCFA and 97.52% for SECFA, providing one minute contact time, 0.0125 g adsorbent dose and 10 ppm dye concentration.
